Dominican Fighter Ventures Into the Land of the Rising Sun to Take Title

Elio Rojas Wins WBC Featherweight Championship

TOKYO— Don King’s top featherweight, Elio “The Kid” Rojas, scored a convincing unanimous-decision win today in Tokyo to take the World Boxing Council championship held by Takahiro Aoh.

Rojas (21-1,13 KOs), from the Dominican Republic now fighting out of Brooklyn, N.Y., was No. 1 ranked by the WBC as well as mandatory challenger to the champion. He ventured into Aoh’s hometown and dominated him from the opening bell.

Rojas dazzled Aoh and his partisan crowd with an array of punches and combinations landed with speed, accuracy and power.

After the fourth round, Rojas led on each of the three judges’ scorecards by the tallies of 40-36 and 39-37, twice.

Aoh was able to land significant punches—highlighted by a right hook in the seventh round that sent Rojas into the ropes and a left hook to the head that staggered Rojas momentarily in the ninth—but it wasn’t enough to sway the scorers in Aoh’s favor.

After the scheduled 12 rounds were completed, the 26-year-old Rojas had made the most of his first world title appearance, sweeping all scorecards. Duane Ford scored the bout 118-110, Anek Hongtonkgkam saw it similarly at 117-111, and Gelasio Perez Huerta viewed the match the closest at 116-113.

Press Release: Former Team GB Head Coach Terry Edwards MBE To Take Up New Post At Rooney’s Boxing Gym In London.‏

Irish boxing coach and manager John Rooney Jnr. has recruited Terry
Edwards MBE, as Director of Coaching and Boxing Development, for his
new London based boxing and fitness gym - Rooney’s Boxing Gym - close
to the famous landmarks Tower Bridge and HMS Belfast.

Terry, who has insisted that he will still undertake full time
coaching duties, will head up a first class coaching team that
includes John Rooney Jnr., former Gleason’s Gym New York and Supreme
Team Coach Barry Robinson, who is best known as the star of the
Million Boxing Style video series, Ben Day, Karol (Carl) Ozimkowski
and Darren Hamilton.

In addition to coaching Terry will also be developing world class
training programmes for Amateur and Professional boxers as well as
specific courses for White Collar Boxers and those just wishing to use
the pugilistic arts as a way of getting healthier and fitter.

On the announcement of his new position Terry briefly said “After a
period of time to reflect on my future having received numerous offers
from different organisations and countries I have decided to take up
the offer of John Rooney as the Director of Coaching and Boxing
Development at the London based Rooney’s Boxing Gym.

I look forward with excitement and optimism to the new challenges the
position will provide in the future.

With the combined expertise of John, a well respected and
knowledgeable professional trainer and my expertise in the amateur
field, I am sure we will forge an excellent partnership going forward.

Rooney’s Gym provides excellent facilities and welcomes all in the
boxing fraternity with a friendly atmosphere. Rooney’s Gym can be
counted as the premier boxing gym not only in London but also in the
World.”

Terry Edwards is without doubt British amateur boxing's greatest and
most successful coach of all time. Terry started his stellar England
and Team GB career in 1986 as London region coach, he was promoted to
Senior National coach in 2001, Performance Director in 2005 and in
2007 became Great Britain Head Coach.

Over the years Terry has guided the cream of British professional
boxing, such household names as current Super Middleweight World
Champion Carl 'The Cobra' Froch, undisputed Cruiserweight World
Champion David 'Hayemaker' Haye and Lightweight World Champion Amir
Khan, through their amateur careers.

During his reign as England and Great Britain coach Terry has taken
his illustrious charges to three Olympic games, five World
Championships, five European Championships and three Commonwealth Games.

His first class coaching and leadership skills netted five Olympic
medals, Gold for Audley Harrison (Sydney 2000) and James DeGale
(Beijing 2008), Silver for Amir Khan (Athens 2004) and Bronze for
David Price and Tony Jeffries (Beijing 2008) as well as a World Title
for Frankie Gavin. Terry also guided Bantamweight Luke Campbell to
being Great Britain’s first European Champion last year.

In 2004 Terry was voted UK’s sports coach of the year and four years
later, after masterminding Great Britain's most successful Olympic
Games campaign since 1956, was deservedly awarded the MBE in the New
Years Honours list 2008 for his services to sport. Whilst not quite
the same cachet as being awarded an MBE he also received a special
award from the boxing sports writers in 2008.

John Rooney Jnr., who also manages British Featherweight Champion
Martin Lindsay, spoke briefly of Terry and the new gym before flying
to Bulgaria where he plans to create a state of art Boxing Camp for
Professional, Amateur and White Collar Boxers. “The plan basically is
for the gym to be the main Boxing Gym in London, if not the UK.

We’re really proud that Terry Edwards’ is coming on board as he brings
a wealth of world class coaching experience. He coached the British
team for the last three Olympics and during that time established
himself as the most successful British coach ever. Terry is the best
coach around and Rooney’s will be the best boxing gym because of it.

There’s a real buzz around the gym, everyone seems to like it. It’s
not just the members or staff, Frank Maloney came over to have a look
around, he liked the place and wants to use it, We’ll be doing a lot
of work with Frank.”

Rooney’s Boxing Gym, located on Holyrood Street, London SE1 in the
building that formerly housed Gleason’s Gym London, has been
completely renovated and features two full size boxing rings, a bank
of heavy, reflex and speed bags. It also has a fully equipped weights
room and exercise suite. Not wishing to restrict the facilities to
just boxers the gym also features an MMA, Dance, Yoga and Exercise
room and Mr Rooney is currently in the process of adding a Steam Room,
a Sports Massage Centre and a second Exercise Suite to compliment
the already excellent facilities available.

Pacquiao & Mayweather lead actives in World Greatest Ever promotion, “The World’s Greatest Ever Boxer” 3-day boxing spectacular Oct. 2-4 at the Paris

The two greatest pound-for-pound boxers today, Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather, Jr., lead a group of six active champions in “The World’s Greatest Ever Boxers” (TWGEB) promotion.

On-line voting at www.GreatestEver.com allows boxing fans from around the world to select the greatest boxer in each of the original eight weight classes, highlighted by the all-time pound-for-pound “Greatest Ever.”

Pacquiao (49-3-2, 37 KOs), riding a 10-fight win streak against a contemporary “Who’s Who” list of world-class boxers, is 3-0 versus other TWGEB nominees, Marco Antonio Barrera (twice) and Oscar de la Hoya. A candidate in TWGEB featherweight division, “Pac Man” has held world titles in five different weight classes, defeating other world champions such as Ricky Hatton, David Diaz, Juan Manuel Marquez and Erik Morales (twice).

Mayweather (39-0, 25 KOs) joins Rocky Marciano, Ricardo Lopez, and Joe Calzaghe as the only unbeaten TWGEB nominees. “Pretty Boy” Floyd, or “Money” Mayweather, retired after stopping Hatton in December of 2007, but he’s returning September 19 to fight Marquez. Mayweather, a lightweight TWGEB candidate, has captured six world titles in five different weight classes.

The four other active fighters who are TWGEB nominees are middleweight Bernard “The Executioner” Hopkins (49-5-1, 32 KOs), featherweight Marcos Antonio “Baby Faced Assassin” Barrera (65-7, 43 KOs), bantamweight Hosumi Hasegawa (26-2, 10 KOs) and flyweight Vic “The Raging Bull” Darchinyan (32-2-1, 26 KOs).

Hopkins, arguably the No. 3 rated pound-for-pound fighter today, hasn’t been active since, at the tender age of 44, shocking previously unbeaten Kelly Pavlik last October. Barrera hasn’t fought since losing to Amir Khan this past March by a bloody fifth-round technical decision. Hasegawa makes his ninth WBA bantamweight title defense tonight (July 14) against Nestor Roche in Japan, while Darchinyan moved-up in weight to bantamweight and lost last Saturday night to IBF title-holder Koseph Agbeko by 12-round decision.

The eight categories represent the eight original weight-class divisions: Strawweights are included in the Flyweight category; Super Middleweight in the Light Heavyweight division. Many fighters fought and won titles at a number of different weights. As far as possible they have been nominated in the division that they made their biggest impact. Fighters have not been nominated on the basis of whether they would beat another fighter in that division, though this is, of course, a consideration. More importantly is their overall record, who they fought at the time, as well as the impact they made on the boxing world, and indeed the world around them. All nominees are listed in the voting section at www.GreatestEver.com.

See you at the Fights.
Thanks for your time.

Chambers back on rise after big ring victory--By Don Steinberg of The Philadelphia Inquirer‏

What a difference a gigantic victory can make. Eddie Chambers, the 27-year-old Philadelphia heavyweight contender, talks these days with a new swagger, like a fighter with a bright eye on the future instead of regrets about one bad night last year.

On July 4, in Hamburg, Germany, Chambers established himself as one of the world's elite heavyweight boxers. He dominated Alexander Dimitrenko, a previously undefeated, 6-foot-7, 254-pound Ukrainian. The win earned Chambers (35-1) a shot at Wladimir Klitschko, the world heavyweight champion, and conceivably a multimillion-dollar payday. That may happen in early 2010.

Against Dimitrenko, Chambers showed superior skills from Round 1 and never let up. He battered Dimitrenko with stiff jabs, hard rights, and fast combinations, blasting the big man with body shots that had him cringing. In Round 10, he decked Dimitrenko with a left hook to the jaw that sent his mouthpiece flying.

"I was jabbing my way in," the normally humble Chambers said, uncharacteristically brash in describing his victory. "I went to the teeth of the alligator, but I had knives on me, and I was stabbing him in his mouth while I was going inside. Then I got to his heart and dug it out."

If Chambers is gloating, it's understandable. His only previous trip to Germany didn't go as well. In January 2008, he went to Berlin with a similar docket. A win over undefeated Russian Alexander Povetkin would have put Chambers in line for a shot at Klitschko.

Chambers was cruising to victory in the first half of the fight, then inexplicably fizzled and allowed Povetkin to surge back and win. Chambers thinks his head failed more than his body; nervous tension and the magnitude of the moment, in his first time traveling overseas, overwhelmed him.

"I got a little weak in there - mentally weak. And I gave that fight away," he said.

It was just one loss, but overnight Chambers went from contender to question mark. The Povetkin fight had been on HBO. His next three weren't televised.

"That one fight turned me from a good six figures [his purse for the Povetkin fight] back to four almost," he said. "I mean, I lost one fight - and I was winning the fight until I blew it. One fight can do that?"

"After a loss like that, you have a choice: Stay there or you move forward," said Rob Murray Sr., Chambers' manager. After the loss, Murray stepped in to become trainer as well. Chambers had been trained for years by his father, Eddie Chambers Sr., who put his son in the ring as a teenager to build his confidence in a tough section of Pittsburgh where Eddie Jr. was harassed by bullies. Murray - who had grown up in Philadelphia gyms, learning from legendary trainers like Yank Durham, and had worked the corner of Bernard Hopkins - became a close family friend. He brought Chambers to Philadelphia and oversaw his growth, including 17 fights at the Blue Horizon from 2002 to 2006.

Under Murray's training, Chambers won three low-profile fights in 2008, then in March beat former champion Samuel Peter to earn a ticket back to Germany - a second chance. Murray took Chambers to train in the Poconos. They worked on technique, analyzed films of greats like Joe Louis beating bigger opponents. They brought in a conditioning coach and put Chambers on a diet, honing him from a flabby 223 pounds to a muscular 208.

"If you'd have cut my head off, you wouldn't even have recognized who it was," Chambers said.

His head changed, too.

"We got away from the negative energy," Chambers said.

In Hamburg, at the hotel before this month's fight, Rob Murray Jr., who does promotions for Team Chambers, showed the heavyweight a passage in an old book, The Greatest Salesman in the World, by Og Mandino. It was about taking advantage of what's in front of you.

"It just made me just relax," Chambers said. "I knew I was in shape. I just had to go out and perform, not worry about failure. Act now."

He did.

On Friday, the elder Murray hosted a celebratory cookout for Chambers. They had a cake made that said "Team Chambers Independence Day."

"Hey, champ!" someone yelled when Chambers arrived. Champ? Not yet.

Klitschko is bigger (6-6) and more experienced (50-3, 47 knockouts) than Chambers. But in 2006, the 6-1 Chambers sparred with Klitschko and was able to muscle him around. Who knows what's possible?

"The change in Eddie mentally and physically was apparent," Dan Goossen, Chambers' promoter, said after the fight. He called the win over Dimitrenko a "performance we believed he always had in him."

Now, Goossen said, "I don't care who the champion is, how big they are. Eddie Chambers showed that he can be a giant-killer."

See you at the Fights.

American Legion Resolves Lawsuit with KingVision

CHINO, Calif.—The American Legion Post 299 in Chino, Calif., takes great pleasure in announcing that it has reached an amicable resolution of the lawsuit brought forth against its organization for the unlawful exhibition of the “Bring On The Titans” boxing telecast between Roy Jones Jr. and Felix Trinidad that took place on Jan. 19, 2008, at Madison Square Garden.

“The American Legion Post 299 wishes to thank Mr. Don King, Don King Productions, Inc., and KingVision Pay-Per-View, Ltd. for their assistance in bringing the matter to a timely conclusion” said Mr. Don Avila, Commander of the Post. “Our organization is most grateful for the consideration of Mr. King and his companies and we have taken immediate measures to ensure that all future PPV telecasts are properly licensed. Despite the fact we are a non-profit veterans organization, we recognize that we too are subject to commercial licensing requirements and we urge all veterans and fraternal organizations to ensure they respect the intellectual property rights of the promoters and distributors of PPV sporting events.”

Don King has been a tireless supporter of the men and women, past and present, who have served in the American armed services. A popular visitor at American bases and military facilities throughout the world for over three decades—and someone who provides his matches free of charge to the American Forces Network, so American troops serving around the world can view telecasts of his fights for free—the pioneering boxing promoter Don King had this to say:

“Our gratitude to the veterans who have served this country is without limit. We cannot begin to express our thanks for the sacrifices made by the men and women who have fought for the freedoms enjoyed by our beautiful nation and on behalf of citizens in need throughout the world. While it is most unfortunate that the American Legion Post 299 received the signal to our boxing telecast inappropriately, we are most appreciative to the Post and all American Legions for their support of our championship boxing telecasts and for their cooperation in seeing that such events are properly licensed for exhibition. For many years, I have authorized my company to provide Don King Productions-promoted prizefights free-of-charge to nearly one million servicemen and women over the American Forces Network, serving 140 naval vessels and 275 military installations in nearly 177 countries around the globe.”

Named as one of the “40 Most Influential Sports Figures of the Past 40 Years” by Sports Illustrated, Don King has long been recognized for his contributions benefiting working-class communities and worthy charitable causes. His generous financial support of the NAACP, the United Negro College Fund, the Martin Luther King Jr. Foundation, the Simon Wiesenthal Center, and the National Hispanic Scholarship Fund, among several other organizations, colleges and hospitals has made him one of the world's leading philanthropists.

During Thanksgiving weekend 2007, Don King surprised the U.S. forces in Iraq with an unannounced visit and a special private viewing of the “Ferocious” Fernando Vargas vs. Ricardo “El Matador” Mayorga super-fight live from STAPLES Center in Los Angeles via the American Forces Network. American service men and women, along with President George W. Bush, were included on the PPV telecast of the event beamed to all troops internationally via live satellite hook-up.

Following his historic USO-sponsored trip in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, Mr. King was joined by five-time world champion Felix “Tito” Trinidad and eight-time world champion Roy Jones Jr. on a three-city stateside base tour, which included visits to West Point Military Academy, Elgin Air Force Base, Hulbert Field Training Base, the Pensacola Naval Station Air Station, Fort Buchanan, and Camp Santiago in Puerto Rico.

An ardent supporter of the United States military, Mr. King also visited Fort Campbell in Kentucky, home of the U.S. Army’s 101st Airborne Division, where he was named an Honorary “Screaming Eagle” by then Lieutenant and now United States Army General David H. Petraeus for his contributions and support of the American Armed Forces.

BRUCE “THE ATLANTIC CITY EXPRESS” SELDON LOOKS TO ROLL INTO CHICAGO AND DERAIL FRES OQUENDO ON JULY 24TH

ATLANTIC CITY, NJ— Former WBA Heavyweight champion of the world, Bruce Seldon looks to make it three in a row as he battles former two-time world championship challenger Fres Oquendo on July 24th at The UIC Pavilion in Chicago in a fight that will be contested for the interim NABA Heavyweight championship.

The heavy handed Seldon, 42, of Atlantic City, New Jersey brings in a record of 40-7 with thirty-six knockouts which includes a recent run of 5-1 with all five wins coming inside the distance. Seldon’s last 17 victories have all come via stoppage and 26 of Seldon’s last 27 victims have not made it to the final bell.

“This is a very important bout for me. I want to thank Fres for taking the fight. In the past year I have signed to face Brian Minto, they all agreed to fight me, and then they either pulled out of the agreement or there were other circumstances that led to those bouts being postponed”, said Seldon.

“A win here puts me right in the thick of the WBA Rankings and anyone who has seen my recent fights knows that I can still punch with anyone in the division. I always come in great shape and expect to win. Fres is a true professional and he has fought at the highest level before so we both know how crucial a win here is.”

“After my win over Gabe Brown on May 15th I was back in the gym that Monday. I am ready for this fight and plan on winning and getting back into the elite of the Heavyweight division.”

Oquendo of Chicago has a record 30-5 with nineteen knockouts will be getting into the ring just four weeks after taking out Mark Brown in three rounds in the same UIC Pavilion ring.

The Oquendo/Seldon scheduled ten round bout for the NABA Heavyweight Title headlines “WINDY CITY FIGHT NIGHT 4”, an outstanding evening of world class professional boxing presented by Dominic Pesoli’s 8 Count Productiions, HOME OF THE BEST IN CHICAGO BOXING.

Doors on the evening of the event will open at 7pm with the first bell at 8pm. The UIC Pavilion is located at 525 S. Racine , just one block south of the Eisenhower Expressway. For further information, please visit their website at

Steve ‘USS’ Cunningham, Defeats Braithwaite, Now Looks To Adamek For Overdue Rematch.

Former Cruiserweight King Steve ‘USS’ Cunningham took a huge leap
towards regaining his coveted IBF championship belt when he
convincingly outboxed former WBC Champ Wayne ‘Big Truck’ Braithwaite
to take a well deserved victory.

By doing so ‘USS’ Cunningham returned to the top of the IBF rankings
earning him the right, as mandatory challenger, for the long overdue
rematch with current champion Tomasz ‘Goral’ Adamek, who took his
crown by a close split decision victory last December in what has gone
down in the annals of boxing history as the greatest Cruiserweight
fight of all time.

The, surprisingly, off-TV battle between two of the Cruiserweight
division’s finest former champions, fighting for the right to face the
current champion, lived up to all expectations and, although not
quite up to the standards of last year’s Cunningham-Adamek, could
rightly be described as the the best Cruiserweight fight of 2009 so
far.

Philadelphia’s ‘USS’ Cunningham controlled the early proceedings with
fast hands, slick combinations and superior boxing technique.
Guyanan born Braithwaite, now based in Florida, kept coming forward
but rarely had any real impact on his far quicker opponent, round
three being the only exception.

As the fight progressed into the final quarter ‘Big Truck’ shifted
gear and had done more than enough enough in the ninth to win that
round. However that was not to last and the juggernaut that is ‘USS’
Cunningham stepped up things again to finish the contest off in
convincing style and justifiably being declared the victor. The judges
scorecards read 119-109, 118-110 & 117-111.

After some well deserved rest Steve ‘USS’ Cunningham talked briefly
about the excellent result and the positive implications for his
career. "It was a great night for me, I was in there with a tough
opponent, Wayne came to the fight in good shape and prepared, but it
was my night. Brother Naazim and I had a great camp and I believe we
showcased a new and improved Steve ‘USS’ Cunningham.

Now, I am rated IBF number one and mandatory challenger to Tomasz
Adamek, he has too see me, or give up the belt, so we'll see if he's
ready for the rematch like I am, as well as our fans.

The fight should have been televised, two former champions, fighting
for position, it's really too bad that the networks consistently
overlook the Cruisers, but we are the division to watch.”

If all goes well later this year, should Adamek decide to defend his
IBF crown and not move to Heavyweight as he has implied, boxing fans
around the world could finally get to see the all American boy, Steve

‘USS’ Cunningham, in battle once again against the Polish Warrior,
complete with the raucous red and white barmy army, in the rematch of
the century... Adamek-Cunningham II
