No Holds Barred: Ahati Kilindi Iyi and the African Fighting Sciences

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman spoke with Ahati Kilindi Iyi, a martial arts legend and the head instructor and technical advisor of the TaMerrian Institute (http://www.tamerrian.com).
Although as a youth he had a background in both wrestling and amateur boxing - his father was a boxer - Kilindi Iyi soon became attracted to the martial arts. This coincided with the rise of the Black Power movement, and growing up in the oft-rebellious Detroit area, he began to study the origins of the martial arts. He learned that the best evidence we have today shows that the martial arts originated in Africa, so he began to devote himself not only to preserving that history, but also spreading interest in what he calls the African fighting sciences.
"No one actually knows where martial arts started. It could have been St. Louis, Missouri, for all we know. But as far as the recorded evidence that we have today, because somebody may come along tomorrow and find out some other recorded evidence, the oldest fighting systems that we have come from the African continent," he said in this interview, which was recorded by phone Monday.
Since "the oldest records of human beings are located, in bone and in stone," in Africa, he concluded that we can then glean that "the oldest systems that we have record of now are the African fighting sciences."
He also understood that the martial arts require "well-rounded" training, in striking, grappling, and weapons. He has traveled to Africa many times, and studied everything from Senegalese wrestling and the numerous styles of wrestling in Africa, to the warrior societies such as of the Maasai in Tanzania, and just about everything in-between.
As for MMA, he coached Tai Bowden at UFC 9 in May 1996 in Detroit, well before the current rules were in place. He said that many of the elite fighters from the traditional martial arts did not participate in those early UFCs. We discussed the experience of those early UFCs, and also MMA today.
For Kilindi Iyi, however, the main thing about martial arts is not who wins or loses a fight. Key for the practitioners are "the reasons why you fight, and the reasons why you don't fight." Martial arts to him aim to teach people "how you live your life," and not simply fighting techniques.
We also discussed how the martial arts have actually been hurt by getting included in the Olympics or trying to get included; the long decline of Detroit and the roots of its present declaration of financial bankruptcy; how many martial arts today are still racially segregated; what we should and should not conclude about the life of Bruce Lee; sometimes-forgotten Jeet Kune Do fighters such as Carlton James and Larry Hartsell; why young people seeking training in martial arts should choose a school which emphasizes character and etiquette rather than choosing mainly on style; and much more.
In addition, we also discussed the Warrior Retreat, which will be held August 30-September 1 in Williamstown, New Jersey, where he will be one of the many instructors

No Holds Barred: Jeff Monson on MMA and May Day‏

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman once again speaks with American Top Team MMA fighter and two-time ADCC champion Jeff Monson.

Jeff was originally scheduled to face Magomed Malikov on April 9 in the M-1 Heavyweight Grand Prix quarterfinals, but a pectoral muscle tear forced Jeff to undergo surgery and postpone that fight. He is recovering from this injury, and this fight is now scheduled to take place June 7 on the M-1 card in the Republic of Ingushetia, Russia.

We spoke with Jeff by phone Monday night about this fight, his career, why he is a self-described anarchist, and how he views the sport and business of MMA.

Our discussion took place right before May 1, or May Day, also marked around the world as International Workers' Day.

Asked what his May Day message would be to MMA fighters, Jeff replied, "My message would be solidarity. My message is, 'Be together.' We're all in this whether, like I said, whether you're trying to be a professional fighter or whether you're well-established or at the top of your game. It's the same sport. We're all in it together."

He also quoted the old saying associated with the IWW (Industrial Workers of the World), "'An injury to one is an injury to all.' And it really is."

We discussed numerous topics, including how this fight with Malikov may be "a classic grappler vs. striker match," why he likes M-1's new six-sided ring, how he has become a celebrity in Russia, his fascination with the country and people of Russia, the reaction to his politics, and the need for a fighters' union.

He also pointed out the "shameful" conditions facing MMA fighters, including no such union, no pension, no health insurance, no job security, no retirement, and often low pay, which is even less than boxers get, while they are still fighting. While the formation of a fighters' union is far from imminent, he stated, "It's going to happen," adding that more education of the fighters is needed and that he hopes to take an active role in this struggle.

Too brutal for NY; Keep ‘ultimate fighting’ ban By MICHAEL E. BONGIORNO

In early March, the state Senate approved the legalization of professional Mixed Martial Arts bouts here, caving to lobbyists for the Ultimate Fighting Championship. Let’s hope the Assembly refuses to go along: MMA is a brutal and barbaric pseudo-sport, the modern equivalent of Roman gladiatorial combat, with an audience screaming and howling at every blow and drop of blood.
Channel-surf on any night and you’re likely to come across an MMA fight, with all its kicking, punching and choking associated. I had the misfortune several years ago of briefly viewing a station carrying a match. In the 30 seconds I watched, I saw a fighter’s forehead split open with a gaping, bloody wound that extended from his scalp to his eyebrow. That was enough to convince me that this “sport” has no place in my life, and should have no place in any civilized society.
REUTERS
This doesn’t even show the blood: Daniel Sarafian (r) of Brazil fighting C.B. Dollaway of the United States in a UFC match in Sao Paulo earlier this year.
At least two professional MMA fighters have died as a result of injuries sustained in the ring/cage.
Today’s steroid-driven athletes are bigger, stronger and more dangerous than ever before. The human body can’t absorb the blows delivered by 6-foot-5, 250-pound hockey player or a 6-foot-7, 340-pound defensive tackle without suffering severe trauma. That’s why so much has been written about concussions and head trauma among former NHL and NFL players.
But in MMA, the whole objective is to pound, kick or choke an opponent into unconsciousness.
How can we teach our children that gratuitous violence has no place in society, when every day they are bombarded with violence — with the most brutal contestants lauded as victors and heroes? Evidently, the Republican Conference in the state Senate has the answer: It supports legalization because New York can make money off this misery.
According to a self-serving study cited by the UFC, a MMA event in New York City would employ 300 people and produce $11.5 million in net economic activity. In the view of the Senate Republicans, we should sell our communal soul to the devil and debase our culture for this 30 pieces of silver.
Depictions of violence are commonplace and glorified in America. Yet “experts” and pundits profess it a mystery as to why our children and so many adults resort to violence to solve their everyday grievances, frustrations and problems.
Well, it’s not a mystery to me. From rap music to violent movies to MMA beatings, one message is clear: Brutality is acceptable, especially if it is profitable.
And it has all desensitized many citizens, especially youngsters, to the horror of actual violent crime.
After more than 30 years as a prosecutor, I strive to avoid violence at every turn. I’ve too often seen the horror and damage wrought by guns, knives, bludgeons, fists and feet. It is the “real life” extension of the brutality seen in MMA contests, where fighters risk life and limb with little financial guarantee except for a “per fight” payment.
Although I’m no longer a prosecutor, I still see the faces of victims who were killed or seriously injured by senseless violence. So please forgive me if I’m not entertained by the sight of two human beings battering each other into unconsciousness — all to support a business whose revenues are close to half a billion dollars.
The senators who voted to legalize MMA have voted to degrade our society. Maintaining core cultural values and high moral standards is less important to them than a $5,000 campaign contribution and a few tax dollars.
I pray that the Assembly does the right thing and relegates this legislation to the scrap heap where it belongs. If not, I hope Gov. Cuomo has the moral sense to veto it.
Michael E. Bongiorno was Rockland County district attorney from 1995 to 2007.

Is This the Year For Mixed Martial Arts in New York?

The annual debate over New York's ban on professional mixed martial arts started anew this week, with a state Senate committee moving a bill to overturn it one step closer to a vote Thursday.
Officials from Ultimate Fighting Championship, the combat sport's largest promoter, are again optimistic that this is their year, buoyed by a number of fresh faces in the state Assembly and the retirement of their fiercest legislative critic, Albany-area Assemblyman Bob Reilly.
Lorenzo Fertitta, CEO and chairman of UFC parent company Zuffa LLC, said he's "optimistic" the ban may be lifted after several years of lobbying New York lawmakers to no avail. The Senate has voted each of the last two years to rescind the ban and allow the state Athletic Commission to regulate the sport, but Assembly Democrats have kept it from a floor vote.
Fertitta is scheduled to travel to Albany next week to make his case in person.
"We've spent the last five years educating legislators," Fertitta said in an interview Wednesday with Gannett's Albany Bureau. "We're hopeful that we have momentum because we put in a lot of time and energy and there's a lot of new, younger members as part of this legislative group."
But opponents of mixed-martial arts appear to be bolstering their efforts, as well. A letter signed by labor-backed organizations and faith groups was sent Wednesday to Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, D-Manhattan, urging him to reject the sport they refer to as "cage fighting."
The letter -- signed by Working Families Party executive director Dan Cantor and Greater New York Labor-Religion Coalition executive director Michael Feinberg, among others -- cited the Newtown school shooting as a reason to reject mixed martial arts.
"In the wake of the tragic mass shooting in Newtown, Connecticut, it is unthinkable that lawmakers in any jurisdiction would risk exposing our children to an activity that involves extreme violence and brutality," the letter reads.
The letter was distributed to the media by a research analyst for the Culinary Workers Union Local 226, a Las Vegas labor group that has unsuccessfully pushed for unionized workers at Station Casinos, a chain of casinos majority-owned by Fertitta and his brother.
UFC officials have suggested the labor dispute has led the union and its umbrella organization -- UNITE HERE -- to lobby against mixed martial arts in New York. UNITE HERE, which also signed onto the letter to Silver, has said their concerns are rooted in how UFC treats its fighters.
"It's frustrating," Fertitta said. "They're taking a Las Vegas issue and they're bringing it into New York state politics, which doesn't make a whole lot of sense."
The Senate Committee on Cultural Affairs, Tourism, Parks and Recreation voted 11-3 early Thursday to move the bill to the Finance Committee. From there, it would head to the Rules Committee, its final stop before a full Senate vote.

No Holds Barred: The Death of Strikeforce and the Rise of Bellator

a,

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman discusses the death of Strikeforce and the rise of Bellator MMA.
We trace some of the history of Strikeforce, and how its first show in March 2006, featuring Frank Shamrock vs. Cesar Gracie, was directly related to the rebirth of this show. No Holds Barred. After slowly growing, culminating in the inception of the Heavyweight Grand Prix in 2011, Strikeforce was sold in March 2011 to Zuffa. After that, it was only a matter of time until it was closed down, which will happen following the final Strikeforce card on January 12, 2013. We thus discuss the some of the main lessons of the rise and fall of Strikeforce.
Bellator began running shows in April 2009, which were only televised live in the U.S. in Spanish on ESPN Deportes. After a year there and one on Fox Sports Net, where it was preempted numerous times amidst a different schedule in many markets, Bellator began to get more stability with a deal for weekly live shows on TV giant Viacom's MTV2 beginning in March 2011. Then, on October 26, 2011, Viacom itself announced the purchase of a majority stake in Bellator. Beginning on January 17, 2013, Bellator's live weekly shows will be shown in the U.S. on Spike TV, a cable powerhouse and former home of the UFC.
We thus also discuss the growth of Bellator, their tournament format for crowning champions and number-one contenders, their rebranding efforts as Bellator MMA, and their prospects now that they will be live on Spike TV. We also play an excerpt from a Bellator and Spike TV media conference call of December 11, 2012, with Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney and Spike TV President Kevin Kay about Bellator MMA's first season on Spike TV.

RZA and Tarantino Joint Kung Fu Movie Project Features Cung Le

The shared obsession of academy award winning director Quentin Tarantino and Wu Tang Clan member RZA has materialized into an upcoming film featuring UFC middleweight Cung Le and other insanity.

According to the recently released official trailer above, The Man with Iron Fists apparently casts academy award winner Russel Crowe as a cowboy in feudal China, professional wrestler Dave Batista as Colossus, as Lucy Liu as Han from Enter the Dragon. While there is currently little information available on Cung Le’s part in the story, IMDB lists him as playing a character called Bronze Lyon. Since long-time action movie staple Byron Mann is playing the character Silver Lion, it can be safely deduced that this movie will be an orgy of violence and 1970′s call backs that makes absolutely no sense.

At a budget estimated near 20 million dollars, The Man with Iron Fists is the third biggest film that Le has appeared in, behind Pandorum and Tekken*.
