Early Fight Of The Year Contender - Montes Beats Ibarra In Total War

Early Fight Of The Year Contender - Montes Beats Ibarra In Total War

Less than two months into 2012, we probably already have the fight of the
year locked down after fellow Mexicans Juan Jose Montes and Oscar Ibara
traded non-stop bombs Saturday night in Guadalajara in their fight for the
vacant World Boxing Federation World Super Flyweight title.

Ibara got off to the better start and landed some huge right hands in the
first round, but “Goofy” Montes took back control in the second by driving
his opponent to the ropes and firing relentlessly with both hands. Ibara
didn’t just receive, but landed some shots of his own and the capacity
crowd was on its feet watching what was turning out to be an outright war.

This trend continued throughout, Montes on the offensive but Ibara always
active and dangerous with his right hand. In the fourth he cut Montes over
the right eye, and in the tenth over the left, and with a bloody nose to
boot it was evident that Ibara had his share of success. But Montes
continued to charge relentlessly, and showed extraordinary courage and
determination from start to finish.

After twelve pulsating rounds of boxing, the crowd had hardly used their
chairs and gave the two warriors a two-minute standing ovation while
waiting for the decision. Judges Jose Garduno, Sergio Sotelo and Alan
Santana scored the bout 118-109, 116-111 and 114-113, all for Montes, but
both fighters deserves big credit for putting on one of the best WBF world
title fights in recent memory.

New World Boxing Federation World Super Flyweight Champion Juan Jose
Montes improved his professional record to 22-2 (14), while Oscar Ibara
fell to 27-6 (18). The fight was promoted by Hector Garcia and HG Boxing,
and televised live in Mexico by Televisa. Supervisor was WBF President
Howard Goldberg.

On the previous night, Friday February 24 in Saint Quentin, France, local
hero Thierry Karl captured the vacant WBF International Cruiserweight
title with a unanimous decision over Georgian Sandro Sirposhvili at the
Palais des Sports. Karl fought a clever fight, and seemed to be one step
ahead of his opponent from the first bell, although Siproshvili never
stopped trying.

At the conclusion, scores were 97-93 (Jean Marcel Nartz, Germany), 99-93
(Alfred Asaro, France) and 100-90 (Robert Verwijs, Netherlands). Referee
was Alexsander Kalinkin from Russia. The fight was promoted by Boxing Club
des Saint Quentin. Thierry Karl, who won his first title at
Cruiserweight, is now 30-5 (19) in the professionals. Siproshvili drops to
25-11 (12).

Ten-Count for Henry Cooper

The boxing public generally are a blood-thirsty lot. They like to see a good hard fight, and if there’s plenty of blood and gore flying around they love it.” – Henry Cooper

One of England’s most beloved sporting figures, Sir Henry Cooper, passed away Sunday at the age of 76.

The former English, Commonwealth, and European champion retired in 1971 at the age of 36 with a 40-14-1 record. He is best-known for his knockdown of an inexperienced young American heavyweight named Cassius Clay/Muhammad Ali in 1963. (On British TV after the fight, Clay/Ali said that Cooper “hit me so hard that my ancestors in Africa felt it.”)

Born in London in 1934, Cooper fought as an 18-year-old in the 1952 Helsinki Olympics, and turned pro two years later.

Sir Henry got it on with such notables as Floyd Patterson, Zora Foley, Karl Mildenberger, and Joe Bugner, in addition to twice fighting Ali, and is the only British boxer to have won three Lonsdale belts.

He was knighted in 2000 and is considered, along with Lennox Lewis, Tommy Farr, and Frank Bruno, one of the greatest heavyweights in British boxing history.

WBA heavyweight champion David Haye paid tribute to Cooper by writing, “One of Britain’s greatest sportsmen Sir Henry Cooper passed away today. A true warrior and great human being. Rest in Peace.”

“He was a lovely fella,” former featherweight champion Barry McGuigan told the BBC, “and I was a personal friend of him and his wife. It really is tragic news for the world of boxing. What a great man he was.”

Former middleweight and super-middleweight champion Chris Eubank said, “There are many world champions who did not have the respect which he garnered. A world championship belt is one thing – it’s a symbol. A lot of people mistake having a belt for being a champion, when in fact it is winning the heart of the people.

“Henry Cooper behaved as a champion which is why he was a champion of the people.”

LONNIE SMITH IS READY TO FIGHT VINCENTE ESCOBEDO IN WOODLAND, CA THIS SATURDAY

Super-featherweight prospect “El Negro Mexicano” Lonnie Smith (14-2-2, 10 KOs) will face off against former world title challenger Vicente Escobedo (24-3, 14 KOs) on March 3rd in Woodland, CA for the WBO NABO Jr. Lightweight Title. The Smith vs. Escobedo bout is scheduled for ten rounds and will headline Telefutura’s Solo Boxeo Series (check local listings).

This is by far the most important fight in Lonnie Smith’s career. Even after a string of bout fall-outs, nothing deterred him from continuing to work hard in the gym. The 24 year old is excited and prepared for this opportunity.

“I’m a gym rat that doesn’t stop working.” Says Smith. “I have been focused and working very hard. This fight means everything.”

Smith is known for his action-packed fighting style. Although he promises to always deliver excitement in the ring, he is looking forward to showing boxing fans the improvements he has made in the gym.

“I hope that the people who have seen me fight before see the growth and maturity in my fighting style. I believe I have come a long way from just being a puncher. I am dedicated to improving my craft each fight.”

Smith lives in Las Vegas and trains with Skipper Kelp. Kelp is a former world-ranked welterweight, but has developed a reputation as a great boxing trainer.

Vicente Escobedo is a big step up in competition for Lonnie Smith. Along with facing Michael Kadsidis for the interim WBO world title in 2009, he went the distance against current interim WBO and interim WBA world titlist Robert Gurrero in 2010. In Escobedo’s last fight, he beat former world champion, Rocky Juarez.

To make Smith’s task even tougher, the upcoming fight is taking place at the Woodland Community Senior Center in Escobedo’s hometown. Smith remains confident, nonetheless.

“I am only going to Woodland, CA for a win!”

On Saturday, a young, hungry prospect is pitted against an experienced, skillful world title challenger. Lonnie Smith vs. Vicente Escobedo is a can't-miss for boxing fans!
