Classic Women Warriors Boxing Management:

Laila Ali joins with Classic Women Warriors Boxing and Bad Girls Boxing in support of the Women Boxers of Kampala Project.
Retired World Champion Boxer and Elite Athlete Laila Ali (24-0 21 KO) has offered a donation and support to assist the Women Boxers of Kampala Project.
“I have seen the video’s and read the reported stories on the plight of the female boxers in Kampala, Uganda. Although I am aware that people are living in poverty in many countries including the United States, I am moved by the drive and determination these women possess to rise above their circumstances. They have set goals for themselves that others would think are impossible. Even though they lack adequate equipment and are literally training in the mud, they show up day after day, staying committed to their dream of competing in the Olympics. I know the amount of hard work, determination and preparation it takes to participate in the sport of boxing. To attempt it with literally no tools or support is difficult to imagine! These women truly inspire me!
I applaud Mary McGee for her unselfish gesture in giving a portion of her fight purse in support this group of less fortunate female athletes. Mary has shown that she is not only a role-model who is willing to help others along the way, but is also a young woman of good character and humility. For this, I am proud and inspired by her as well!
I have known Lori Steinhorst for nearly 14 years. Therefore, I understand her mission and passion for the sport of boxing. Beyond that, we share a passion for our communities, the health and well being of children and the nurturing of the human spirit. Through this project, the women of Kampala will be empowered and they in turn, will touch the lives of the women in their communities.
Lori Steinhorst, President of both Classic Women Warriors and Bad Girls Boxing said “I am deeply touched by Laila’s decision to help us with this project. I know that she has a very busy schedule, a family and plenty of other commitments that require her attention. That she wanted to be a part of this project tells me that she recognizes its value and we are grateful for that. Laila Ali is the type of athlete and role model these women need in their corner. I know that the Women Boxers of Kampala will be thrilled to receive this news!”
Eddie Montalvo, Vice President at Classic Women Warriors stated “We are so honored by Laila Ali’s commitment to the Women Boxers of Kampala. I know that is something they will come to treasure for the rest of their lives.”

Heavyweight champ Frazier's gym named to National Register of Historic Places

Heavyweight champ Frazier's gym named to National Register of Historic Places

The Philadelphia gym where former heavyweight champ Joe Frazier lived and trained has been named to the National Register of Historic Places.
Preservation officials say they were notified Tuesday of the designation by the National Park Service. They say it will help protect the building and commemorate Frazier's legacy.
Frazier converted the three-story north Philadelphia building into a gym in 1968. He lived upstairs and trained downstairs.
For decades after his retirement, the space served as a neighbourhood anchor. But Frazier sold the building in 2008, and it's now partially occupied by a furniture store. The gym sign is still visible.
The National Trust for Historic Preservation last year placed the gym on its list of America's 11 Most Endangered Historic Places.
Frazier died of liver cancer in 2011.

ENGLAND'S LEE PURDY SET TO REPLACE INJURED KELL BROOK AND FACE DEVON ALEXANDER FOR IBF WELTERWEIGHT WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP ON MAY 18 LIVE ON SHOWTIME® FROM BOARDWALK HALL IN ATLANTIC CITY

England's Lee Purdy, the number four rated IBF welterweight contender, is set to face IBF Welterweight World Champion Devon Alexander in place of Kell Brook who had to withdraw from the May 18 bout against Alexander at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey after suffering a foot injury.  The bout will be telecast live on SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING® along with Lamont Peterson vs. Lucas Matthysse as the main event.

"We look forward to Devon facing a formidable opponent in the U.K.'s Lee Purdy," said Oscar De La Hoya, President of Golden Boy Promotions.  "We have a great card for fans in Atlantic City and those watching at home on SHOWTIME and it will be an exciting night for everyone on May 18th."

St. Louis' Devon Alexander (24-1, 13 KO's) is a master boxer who has already won world titles in two divisions despite being only 25 years old.  Alexander is the former IBF and WBC world title holder at 140 pounds, with wins over Lucas Matthysse, Juan Urango and Junior Witter to his name.  In 2012, "The Great" made his move to welterweight and by the time he was finished defeating former World Champions Marcos Maidana and Randall Bailey, he was crowned the IBF Welterweight World Champion.

Fighting out of Colchester, Essex, Lee "Lights Out" Purdy (20-3-1, 13 KO's) has amazed British fans by sailing to the top of the welterweight division despite having no amateur career.  A pro since 2006, the 25-year-old brings a knockout streak into his first world title fight, having finished off four consecutive opponents, including longtime contender Cosme Rivera in March.

Peterson vs. Matthysse is presented by Golden Boy Promotions, sponsored by Caesars Atlantic City, Corona and AT&T and will air live on SHOWTIME at 9:15 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the West Coast) immediately following ALL ACCESS: MAYWEATHER vs. GUERRERO Epilogue which will air at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT.  In the co-main event, Devon Alexander faces off against Lee Purdy for Alexander's IBF Welterweight World Championship.  SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING® is available in Spanish on secondary audio programming (SAP). Preliminary fights will air live on SHOWTIME EXTREME® at 7:00 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the West Coast).

Bernard Hopkins vs Karo Murat fight set for July 13 in Brooklyn

(photo of Bernard Hopkins; By Keisha Morrisey)
Light heavyweight titleholder Bernard Hopkins' first defense, which will come against mandatory challenger Karo Murat of Germany, will take place July 13 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y., Golden Boy Promotions chief executive Richard Schaefer told ESPN.com on Monday.
The fight, agreed to three weeks ago, did not have a set date other than being penciled in for sometime in July or August.
"The fight was made and we were looking for a date and we were holding July 13 at the Barclays Center for quite awhile for a fight," Schaefer said. "I talked to Murat's promoter, Chris Myer from Sauerland Event, and they are OK with the date and I talked to Bernard and he was OK with it also, so since everyone was fine with it why not get it done? So I am finalizing everything for that date in that building."
Schaefer said the fight will be televised on Showtime, with whom he said he is wrapping up a deal.

Philadelphia's Hopkins (53-6-2, 32 KOs) outpointed Tavoris Cloud on March 9 at the Barclays Center to claim his 175-pound belt and, at age 48, become the oldest fighter in boxing history to win a world title breaking his own record, which he set when he was 46 by outpointing Jean Pascal on Pascal's turf in Montreal to win a title.
"The people at the Barclays Center are excited to have Bernard Hopkins back and Bernard is excited to go back to the Barclays Center," Schaefer said. "He told me he is already training for the fight."
Murat (25-1-1, 15 KOs), 29, will be fighting in the United States for the first time.
Schaefer said that featherweight Gary Russell Jr., the 2011 ESPN.com prospect of the year who has been beset by injuries, will likely be on the televised undercard.
"We feel that Gary Russell is ready to take on anyone," Schaefer said. "We want to see who is available and who will take the fight. It's not easy to make a fight for Gary Russell because not too many people want to fight him."
The 24-year-old Russell (22-0, 13 KOs), a 2008 U.S. Olympian from Capitol Heights, Md., has faced very soft opposition throughout his pro career. In a shutout 10-round decision win against Russia's Vyacheslav Gusev in Las Vegas on March 2, Russell fractured his left hand. He missed significant time in 2012 because of an ankle injury.
