WSB broadens its worldwide appeal with new Franchise in Africa

World Series of Boxing (WSB) is delighted to announce its presence on yet another continent with the Algeria Desert Hawks set to bring the excitement of the world's premiere team boxing to Africa.

With representation across the globe in the Americas (Argentina, Mexico and the USA), Europe (Azerbaijan, Germany, Great Britain, Italy, Poland, Russia and Ukraine) and Asia (Kazakhstan), WSB will now be exploring new horizons in Season III with the competition debuting in Africa, a land whose heart beats for the sport of boxing.

Fully supported by the Algerian Boxing Federation (FAB) and represented by some of the country's top talent, the Algeria Desert Hawks will compete in Group A alongside Russia, Azerbaijan Baku Fires, Argentina Condors, Hussars Poland and Mexico Guerreros. The draw has handed them a tricky opener, away to Russia on Sunday 18 November to face last season's finalists.

"After Argentina, Ukraine, Poland and Great Britain, I am extremely pleased to welcome another new Franchise to World Series of Boxing Season III, especially one from a continent that has not yet tasted WSB", stated Dr Ching-Kuo Wu, Chairman of the WSB Board. "We all know how passionate Africa is for sport and especially for boxing. I cannot wait to witness the very best African boxers taking to the ring to make their continent proud."

"We are excited at joining World Series of Boxing", expressed Dr Abdellah Bessalem, President of the Algerian Boxing Federation. "We have been discussing this opportunity for a few months as we wanted to propose alternative career paths to our best boxers. Having this Algerian Boxing Team (Desert Hawks) competing in WSB is only the very first step of the involvement of the African continent in AIBA's initiatives since we are convinced that WSB and the AIBA Professional Boxing (APB) are the future of the sport of boxing."

SHOWTIME-Televised Doubleheader: Undefeated Omar ‘Oh!’ Henry Vs. ‘King’ James de la Rosa Santana to Take on Fellow Unbeaten Juan ‘Johnny’ Garcia

Don King hosted a press conference today at the historic Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Fla., where he will present two of his top undefeated prospects in separate bouts during a televised doubleheader on ShoBox: The New Generation on Friday, Nov. 16 (live on SHOWTIME 11 p.m. ET/PT).  Undefeated junior middleweight contender Omar “Oh!” Henry (12-0-1, 9 KOs), from Chicago, will face “King” James de la Rosa (21-1, 12 KOs), from San Benito, Texas, Angelo “La Cobra” Santana (13-0, 10 KOs), from Miami, and Juan “Johnny” Garcia (13-0, 8 KOs), from Holland, Mich., will meet in a collision of unbeaten lightweight contenders.

King’s press conference featured Santana, 24, a two-time Cuban national champion who has fought professionally out of Miami since 2008.  He has stopped his last six opponents within four rounds.

Santana will face a serious test from Garcia, whose greatest claim to fame came when he outpointed previously undefeated Cuban Yordenis Ugas on March 23.

“I know Garcia is coming to fight but so am I,” said Santana, who’s coming off a career-best victory, a third-round technical knockout over highly regarded Justin Savi on June 23.  “It is our hope that this fight does not go to the judges’ scorecards.  I’m ready to rumble. This will be a good fight for as long as it lasts.”

Eighty-one-year-old Hall of Fame promoter Don King is looking forward to promoting his first event at South Florida’s Gulfstream Park, which in recent years has added a beautiful casino and an exciting indoor-outdoor shopping and dining area known as The Village.

“Gulfstream Park is bigger and better than ever,” said King, whose offices are located in nearby Deerfield Beach.  “The outdoor area where we will erect the ring over a fountain will make for one of the most intimate and elegant fight venues ever.  South Florida fight fans will love it and it will look great on SHOWTIME.”
