The intraleague season opener for the Gotham Girls Roller Derby was held Saturday, April 25, at the Hunter College Sportsplex in Manhattan, New York, between the Bronx Gridlock and the Queens of Pain. Da Bronx avenged their only loss of the 2008 season, which was to Queens in the 2008 league championship bout, by outscoring Queens by a comfortable margin, 121-78. These are two of the best individual teams in the U.S., as the Gotham Girls Roller Derby won the 2008 Women's Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA) (http://www.wftda.com/) national championship, and the Queens and Bronx teams were the best in the best league.
The halftime entertainment included an electrifying performance by world champion trick roper, performer, and singer Chris McDaniel (http://chrismcdaniel.net/), which drew a loud and enthusiastic reaction from this largely New York crowd.
Right after this game, we spoke with Anaïs Ninja and Rat-A-Tat Kat about their first official league games, why they have become derby girls, what the appeal of this sport is to them, and much more. Anaïs Ninja also told us about her transition from martial arts and boxing to roller derby.
Roller derby is considered by many to be the fastest-growing sport in America, so make sure to keep up with what is going on in this fun, sexy, and exciting sport. The next Gotham Girls Roller Derby game is Saturday, May 16, between the Brooklyn Bombshells and the Manhattan Mayhem, also at Hunter College in New York.

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with Konrad Pi, the co-founder of the Art of War Fighting Championship (http://mmachina.com) and president of the Adoria Entertainment Group in Beijing, China.
The next show for the Art of War Fighting Championship, scheduled for May 23 at the National Olympic Sports Center Gymnasium in Beijing, will feature a full card of mixed martial arts fights, headlined by a main event with rising Chinese star Wu Hao Tian facing the up-and-coming Japanese fighter, Yutaka Kobayashi. Also fighting on this card will be Rolles Gracie Jr. of Brazil, as well as Malik Mawlayi of Sweden taking on Fransino Tirta of Indonesia, and many other fighters from Asia and around the world.
This event will also be an international "coming out party for the Art of War Fighting Championship," said Mr. Pi in our lengthy interview. According to the Art of War, this show is being held "under the Patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, the United Arab Emirates." There is expected to be in attendance "a delegation of over 300 students, athletes, press representatives and martial arts fans from the United Arab Emirates."
In addition, there will be a reunion of the first family of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, the Gracies, who are also of course mixed martial arts pioneers. So far listed as confirmed to attend are Rickson Gracie, Royce Gracie, Renzo Gracie, and Royler Gracie. Other notables scheduled to attend this event are Demian Maia, Fabricio Werdum, Ricardo Liborio, Vitor "Shaolin" Ribeiro, Bas Rutten, Josh Barnett, Renato "Babalu" Sobral, Tim Sylvia, Jeremy Horn, referees Yuji Shimada and Big John McCarthy, Stephen Quadros, Michael Buffer, Todd Hester, Luca Atalla, and yours truly, Eddie Goldman.
The organizers of the Art of War Fighting Championship hope to use this event to begin to establish their promotion as not only the leading mixed martial arts company in China, the most populous country in the world, but also as one of the top world-class mixed martial arts events in the world. Accomplishing that, they are well aware, will take time, but this event is a major early step along that path.
In a lengthy interview with Konrad Pi, we discussed this May 23 event, the overall plans for the Art of War Fighting Championship, the top fighters on this card, and the rules of this event, which are similar to the old Pride rules. We also discussed the role of martial arts in Chinese history and culture, the importance of both grappling and striking to the Art of War Fighting Championship, the growth of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in China, cultural differences and perceptions between many people in China and the West which cause them to look at many aspects of the combat sports in differing ways, the relationship of the Art of War Fighting Championship organization to the government of the People's Republic of China, prefight medical testing required by the Art of War Fighting Championship, and more.

Hot N.E. prospect Danny O’Connor Ready for 6, heading to 135
FRAMINGHAM, Mass.– With six pro fights under his belt since turning pro last September for Seminole Warriors Boxing, unbeaten prospect Danny O’Connor is now ready to move up to 6-round bouts and preparing to go down to the lightweight division.
2004 U.S. Olympic Team alternate O’Connor (6-0, 2 KOs) is coming off an impressive win by 4-round decision against 22-fight veteran Travis Hartman (9-12-1, 7 KOs) last Saturday night on the Froch-Taylor undercard on Showtime at MGM Grand Foxwoods in Ledyard, Connecticut.
O’Connor twice floored Hartman, who had been in against Cesar Chavez, Jr., en route to his sixth victory by judges’ scores of 40-34 three times. “I’m really starting to feel like a professional boxer,” O’Connor said. “I’m comfortable with everything – what I eat the day of the fight, how to prepare in the locker room – and I was very relaxed in the ring. I’m a perfectionist and there must be 100 things I think I could have done better, but other than a few minor things, I was happy with my performance. I still think I could have come quicker off my defense like I usually do and used a few more angles. But I do think it was my best fight as a pro.
“I’m usually amped-up in a fight but when I knocked down Hartman, instead of rushing, I looked to Dave in my corner and was patient. I loved fighting on a big card like that. I could tell it was different from the weigh in with Froch having such a big cheering section. There was a Showtime environment. I wasn’t nervous, more excited, because I wanted to put on a good show for the Showtime people and fans watching that hadn’t seem me fight before. I think I’m ready for my first 6-rounder and over the course of time I’ll get down to 135. My next fight I’ll probably weigh 138-139. I just have to concentrate on my good diet and we’ll see how long it’ll take for me to fight strong at 135. Right now, it’s just one fight at a time.”
The 23-year-old O’Connor, who defeated 2008 Olympic Gold medalist Felix Diaz a year ago in a USA-Dominican Republic dual meet, hopes to be fighting again in June.
“I thought Danny looked real sharp and very relaxed in his fight,” head trainer and co-manager (with Rob Valle) David Keefe added. “He’s fought a lot of rounds (19) in his six pro fights and we believe he’s ready to step-up to fight 6-rounders.”

TELECAST NOTE: 2008 Olympian Gary Russell, Jr., takes on Alvaro Muro in a four-round featherweight bout Friday night before the SHOWTIME telecast begins. Between the two featured fights, highlights will be shown of Russell’s fight and he will be interviewed about his transition from the amateur to professional ranks and what is next for the Washington D.C., resident. Russell is 2-0 since turning pro in January. At the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Russell never got to enter the ring as he missed the Olympic weigh-in hours after losing consciousness in his Olympic Village dorm room.

ALLAN GREEN CALLS OUT BUTE AND FROCH
With Allan “Sweetness” Green’s dazzling second-round knockout over Carlos De Leon Jr. on Saturday, he sent a message to the boxing world that he is back. Now, he has a message for the big names in the super middleweight division: Any time, any place.
First on Green’s mind is Carl Froch, the WBC champion who successfully defended his title with a dramatic 12th-round knockout over Jermain Taylor in Saturday night’s main event.
And since Froch traveled to America to fight Taylor, Green has no qualms about going to Froch’s homeland of Great Britain for a shot at the championship.
“No disrespect to Carl Froch, but I want that WBC title,” said Green (28-1, 20 KOs). “It's the title many of the greats I watched growing up held, and since both he and I took care of business last weekend, now the stage is set. He just made his big splash in America and I'm more than ready to make my mark in England.”
However, if a fight with Froch can’t be made immediately, Green has no intentions of waiting for him.
Undefeated IBF champion Lucian Bute was ringside at the MGM Theatre at Foxwoods on Saturday night, and Green is quite sure Bute took notice of his performance.
“If Froch has other less challenging plans, hopefully Lucian Bute has a closer view of my fists than his front row seat offered him last weekend,” said Green.
If neither of those title fights can be worked out, Green has yet another plan: a fight with former welterweight champion turned middleweight contender Paul Williams.
After his win over Winky Wright, Williams called out light heavyweight Joe Calzaghe, who called it a career after his win over Roy Jones Jr. last November.
Calling out the retired Calzaghe left Green unimpressed and ready to give Williams a reason to not bypass the super middleweight division so quickly.
“If a title fight has to get put on hold for whatever reason they might try to come up with, I want Paul Williams,” said Green. “The self proclaimed most feared man in boxing calls out retired light heavyweights, but if he realistically sees himself at 175 pounds soon, make a pit stop at 168 before you fights Joe Calzaghe, Bob Foster or Archie Moore.”

With Allan “Sweetness” Green’s dazzling second-round knockout over Carlos De Leon Jr. on Saturday, he sent a message to the boxing world that he is back. Now, he has a message for the big names in the super middleweight division: Any time, any place.
First on Green’s mind is Carl Froch, the WBC champion who successfully defended his title with a dramatic 12th-round knockout over Jermain Taylor in Saturday night’s main event.
And since Froch traveled to America to fight Taylor, Green has no qualms about going to Froch’s homeland of Great Britain for a shot at the championship.
“No disrespect to Carl Froch, but I want that WBC title,” said Green (28-1, 20 KOs). “It's the title many of the greats I watched growing up held, and since both he and I took care of business last weekend, now the stage is set. He just made his big splash in America and I'm more than ready to make my mark in England.”
However, if a fight with Froch can’t be made immediately, Green has no intentions of waiting for him.
Undefeated IBF champion Lucian Bute was ringside at the MGM Theatre at Foxwoods on Saturday night, and Green is quite sure Bute took notice of his performance.
“If Froch has other less challenging plans, hopefully Lucian Bute has a closer view of my fists than his front row seat offered him last weekend,” said Green.
If neither of those title fights can be worked out, Green has yet another plan: a fight with former welterweight champion turned middleweight contender Paul Williams.

“Rage At The River” reunion for McGirt & Ward;Joey “KO Kid” Spina vs. Tiwon Taylor headlines May 22nd show at Twin River Event Center, RI
PROVIDENCE– Legendary boxers James “Buddy” McGirt, Sr. and “Irish” Micky Ward began a friendship in 1986 that continues today. They will reunite May 22nd at “Rage At The River,” promoted Jimmy Burchfield’s Classic Entertainment, Inc. (CES), as head trainers of fighters on that show.
McGirt, 2-time world champion in two different weight classes and former Trainer of the Year, will be training his son, middleweight James McGirt, Jr. (19-2-1, 9 KOs), who’ll be making his CES debut in a 6-round bout versus an opponent to be named. Ward, a participant in three Fights of the Year, will handle his nephew, lightweight Sean Eklund (6-3, 1 KO), against Jose Guzman (3-4-1) in a 4-round match.
“I think it’s great and I’m excited to be working the same show as Micky,” Buddy said. “He fought on my undercard in 1986, 16 years later were in opposite corners -- I had (Arturo) Gatti – and now we’re together again. Micky Ward was one fighter I didn’t want to fight. I always felt that, if he wanted to, he’d be a trainer. They don’t make fighters like Micky Ward anymore. We’re good friends.”
Ward remembers beating Jesus Carlos Velez (KO6) on Buddy’s undercard (Feb. 21, 1986) in Atlantic City. “Two years later I stopped Joey Ferrell in the first round,” Micky laughed and jokingly added, “the same fighter Buddy beat by (10-round) decision on that same 1986 card. I broke his rib. I was amazed by Buddy. I was in my fifth fight and he was close to fighting for a world title. I remember thinking, ‘Wow, I want to be like him.’ I never wanted to fight him, though. Until the end of his career, he only lost to world champions, twice to the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world, Pernell Whitaker. Buddy’s a good guy, great fighter and trainer, and we’re friends. I’m enjoying the challenge of being a trainer but, I’m not on the same level as Buddy, who has trained a lot of world champions.”

“Irish Lightning” strikes Las Vegas Dean Byrne fights Jose Reynoso Friday night at South Point Hotel & Casino
LOS ANGELES– Unbeaten Irish light welterweight prospect Dean “Irish Lightning” Byrne explodes in Las Vegas against Mexican southpaw Jose Reynoso (10-2, 1 KO) in a scheduled 8-round bout Friday night at South Point Hotel Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.
The boxing world will be focused on Las Vegas this weekend for Saturday night’s mega-fight Saturday evening between pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao and Ricky Hatton, but that show’s appetizer is the Sin City debut of the 24-year-old Byrne, who’ll also have Manny’s trainer, Freddie Roach, in his corner.
Byrne has found a home at Roach’s famed Wild Card Boxing Gym in Los Angeles, where Dean has benefited from sparring with Pacquiao, Amir Khan and Juan Marquez. A veteran of more than 200 amateur fights, Byrne was an Irish National champion who turned pro in Australia, capturing the New South Wales State belt in only his fourth pro fight, and one fighter later added the Australian crown in a 10-round bout. On his way from Australia to relocate in Boston, Dean stopped in Los Angeles and trained at Wild Card, where Roach took an instant shine to his now protégé.
"Every fight counts, each one a stepping stone for Dean to reach his ultimate goal of winning a world title,” Byrne’s manager Steven Feder (Standing Eight Management) remarked. “To have Dean become champion of the world is what this is all about. He's sparred with so many champions in Wild Card Gym and his turn to wear the belt in the limelight of the ring is just a matter of time.
"Dean’s a true throwback boxer; a working man’s fighter. MADDALONE DOESN'T DISAPPOINT, STEVENS, MOUTON GO TO WAR
On Tuesday Night Joe DeGuardia's Star Boxing, presented its first installment of "VIP Boxing" at the elegant Russo's On The Bay in Howard Beach, NY. The card was made up of five entertaining fights, headlined by Star Boxing's heavyweight fan favorite Vinny Maddalone taking on Benji "Boom Boom" Baker.
Maddalone, who is known for his all-action come forward style, didn't disappoint his hometown fans, going straight at Baker from the opening bell, landing huge left hooks and thunderous overhand rights. A big overhand right as the bell sounded to end the first sent Baker down hard.
Rounds two and three saw more of the same from Maddalone, as he continuously stalked Baker, opening up on him with any chance he could. A heavy barrage of punches from Maddalone caused Baker to take a knee towards the end of round three.
In the fourth round a huge left hook to the body sent Baker down hard, Baker survived the round, but was clearly in bad shape. Upon the advice of the ringside physician the bout was stopped after the 4th, giving Maddalone the TKO victory. With the victory Maddalone improved his record to (32-5, 23KO) while Baker dropped to (18-6, 9KO). The victory sets up a huge international fight for Maddalone this summer. More details to come soon.
In the co-feature bout of the evening, Star Boxing's exciting super middleweight Curtis "Showtime" Stevens improved to 20-2, 14KO, winning an eight round war over dangerous Don Mouton (9-4-1, 8KO).
Mouton showed a granite chin throughout, but Stevens simply had too much fire power. Stevens worked off a good jab to set up his lethal left hook that seemed to connect every time he threw it. When Mouton would cover up on the ropes Stevens would open up, landing beautiful four and five punch combinations, but to Mouton's credit he took the shots well.
Each fighter had their moments throughout, but Stevens punches seemed to have much more of an effect.
In the 8th and final round both fighters engaged in a heavy exchange bringing the packed house to a standing ovation. All in all it was a very impressive performance for Stevens as he improved to a perfect 3- 0 under the Star Boxing banner.

His pedigree speaks for itself as Ellis is a former Bahaman Light Middleweight Champion and WBO NABO Light
Middleweight title challenger. Out of his eleven victories ten have been by way of knockout and his losses have been against classy opposition such as Miguel Angel Rodriquez, Henry Crawford and Richard Gutierrez.
Does this bother Davis? Not one iota. ‘Tyson’ clearly relishes the thought
of facing a former title challenger. “I want to go for a title myself one
