On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with skater Em Dash of the Manhattan Mayhem of the Gotham Girls Roller Derby (http://www.gothamgirlsrollerderby.com/).
Before a sellout crowd Saturday night, May 16, at Hunter College in New York City, Em Dash set a new individual league scoring record by racking up 81 points as Manhattan won their opening bout of the 2009 season, 121-93, over the Brooklyn Bombshells.
We spoke with Em Dash shortly after her record-setting performance. We discussed what was key to her scoring record, the role of her whole team, the prospects of the Manhattan Mayhem in 2009, and more.

The intraleague season opener for the Gotham Girls Roller Derby was held Saturday, April 25, at the Hunter College Sportsplex in Manhattan, New York, between the Bronx Gridlock and the Queens of Pain. Da Bronx avenged their only loss of the 2008 season, which was to Queens in the 2008 league championship bout, by outscoring Queens by a comfortable margin, 121-78. These are two of the best individual teams in the U.S., as the Gotham Girls Roller Derby won the 2008 Women's Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA) (http://www.wftda.com/) national championship, and the Queens and Bronx teams were the best in the best league.
The halftime entertainment included an electrifying performance by world champion trick roper, performer, and singer Chris McDaniel (http://chrismcdaniel.net/), which drew a loud and enthusiastic reaction from this largely New York crowd.
Right after this game, we spoke with Anaïs Ninja and Rat-A-Tat Kat about their first official league games, why they have become derby girls, what the appeal of this sport is to them, and much more. Anaïs Ninja also told us about her transition from martial arts and boxing to roller derby.
Roller derby is considered by many to be the fastest-growing sport in America, so make sure to keep up with what is going on in this fun, sexy, and exciting sport. We follow up on the commentaries of the past two weeks on this show by Dr. Margaret Goodman, focusing again on why the March 14 fight between Amir Khan and Marco Antonio Barrera should have been stopped far sooner than it was because of a severe cut on Barrera's forehead due to an accidental head clash in the first round. We discuss the latest findings in the Antonio Margarito-Javier Capetillo hand wrap scandal, where authorities in California have officially revealed that the hand wraps they were attempting to use against Shane Mosley in their January 24 fight contained calcium and sulfur, two key ingredients of plaster of Paris. We explain that while lifetime bans of Margarito and Capetillo might be justified in this case, there is, unfortunately and incredibly, no central body in boxing which has the authority to issue such a ban. And we also discuss how the American boxing establishment has let the marquee division in boxing, the heavyweights, slip right through their hands and end up centered in Europe. On the positive side, we preview the important 140-pound title unification fight between WBO champion Kendall Holt (25-2, 13 KOs) and WBC champion Timothy Bradley (23-0, 11 KOs). This fight, between these two Americans, will take place Saturday, April 4, at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. It will be telecast live in the U.S. on Showtime. We spoke with both Kendall Holt and Timothy Bradley to get their views on what they expect to happen in this fight. Right after the marathon of televised fights on Saturday, December 13, we had a lengthy discussion by telephone about the fights themselves and also numerous pressing issues in boxing. We began with the Yuri Foreman-James Moore junior middleweight fight, won by Foreman by a lopsided ten-round unanimous decision (Johnny is Yuri's matchmaker). In an upset and a surprising rout, the former league champions, the Queens of Pain, toppled the defending champions, the Bronx Gridlock, by a score of 161-113.
