DON KING STATEMENT: AIBA/IOC‏

Famed boxing promoter Don King ripped the International Amateur Boxing Association (AIBA) yesterday for a plan to launch a pro fight league whose boxers could compete in the Olympics.
AIBA Professional Boxing would offer fighters from 19-40 a chance to work their way through national, regional and world levels in 10 weight categories starting later this year.
Olympic boxing was once closed to pro fighters, but those who join the new league rather than sign with promoters, such as King or rivals Bob Arum and Oscar de la Hoya, could compete in the Olympics under the AIBA plan.
The AIBA would require current pro fighters join the AIBA pro league two years ahead of their first Olympic qualifying event and stay with the league at least two years after the Olympics while current amateurs must join within three years of their first Olympic qualifying event.
“I am extremely concerned by the commandeering of those participating in the Olympics by the AIBA,” King said in a statement.
“Their policy demanding that participants sign exclusive professional contracts with AIBA in order to participate in the Olympics is tantamount to monopoly, coercion and restraint of trade.”
King, whose once-mightty stable of top names in boxing has faded in recent years, could lose young prospects to the AIBA. He aims his criticism at the idea of pitting pro fighters against amateurs with the Olympics as a lure.
“I am frightened, shocked and appalled the AIBA and International Olympic Committee could support such a harmful policy,” King said.
“I strongly advise the AIBA and the IOC to dismiss their efforts to emasculate the boxers in their monopolistic practices and circumnavigate the boxing organizations and professional promoters, giving the AIBA and IOC veiled control over the sport of boxing.
“This policy is not only implausible, it is immoral, harmful and highly dangerous.” – AFP

Surging Lightweight Boxer Bahodir ‘Baha’ Mamadjonov Signs with Promoter Don King

(Photo of Don ing by; Keisha Morrisey)
Emerging lightweight boxer Bahodir “Baha” Mamadjonov traveled to Don King’s office in South Florida today to sign a long-term promotional agreement with the legendary promoter.

A heralded amateur with over 200 fights, Mamadjonov won several championships fighting out of his native Uzbekistan before moving to Houston two years ago to turn professional under the guidance of trainer Ken Richardson.  He has fought often and risen rapidly as evidenced by his record: 13-1 with nine knockouts.

“Signing with Don King brings me closer to my goal of winning a world championship,” Mamadjonov said.  “That is what drives me every day.  I want to win a world title for my family and the people of Uzbekistan who always believed in me.”

Key to Mamadjonov’s success has been a fearlessness and work ethic that has allowed the 25-year-old to take fights on short notice that less industrious fighters would have missed.  His trainer said some have gone as far as criticizing him for moving his fighter along too fast.

“My belief is that if a boxer is prepared and stays in training year-round, he can and should be ready to fight at all times,” Richardson said.  “Baha is passionate about the sport and wants to fight as often as he can.”

Mamadjonov’s rapid rise began when his first six fights took place in less than six months.  That was in 2011. He fought six more times in 2012.

Richardson further tempted fate by accepting four key fights for Mamadjonov in the last 16 months on notice varying from two weeks down to three days.

Archie Ray Marquez was 12-1 before facing Mamadjonov on Nov. 10, 2011, and Michael Clark was 42-6 going in against the Uzbeki on March 1, 2012.  Mamadjonov won both fights by decision, serving notice he would be a force to be reckoned with.

Undefeated Darley Perez was to have met Michael Katsidis last August, but Katsidis pulled out two weeks before the fight with a knee injury.  Mamadjonov took the fight and dominated until round five when an accidental clash of heads resulted in blurred vision in his left eye.

After suffering a flash knockdown in round eight, Mamadjonov still almost won the fight, which went to Perez by split decision after 10 rounds.

Another undefeated and touted lightweight, Angelo Santana, lost his opponent on April 12 just one week before the match. Mamadjonov willingly accepted the challenge and made the most of the opportunity.

After suffering a flash knockdown from a Santana jab in round 2, Mamadjonov took control of the fight. After six rounds, the three judges had the fight scored even at 66 apiece.

In a pivotal round eight, Mamadjonov battered Santana unmercifully along the ropes before he crumbled to the mat.  The Cuban made it to round nine, but Mamadjonov floored him twice more before the referee halted the contest.

“I hit Santana with a body shot in the seventh round and I heard him groan so I tried to stop him,” Mamadjonov said.  “In the eighth round, I said to myself, ‘Baha, you must stop him now.’

“Don’t forget, I took the fight on short notice and had to lose a lot of weight quickly.  There was no time for me to waste.”

Promoter Don King loves what he has seen from his newest fighter.

“I am extremely pleased and proud to have Baha with me,” King said.  “I expect great things from this young man because he’s dedicated and committed to becoming a world champion.  He took the fight with Santana on almost no notice and stopped a great lightweight.

“Baha reveres industrialist Alisher Usmanov from his native Uzbekistan and he wants to bring a world title back home for him and the people of Uzbekistan.”

Mamadjonov risked everything to come to the United States to pursue his dream of winning a world title.

“When you see me fight ferociously it’s because I want to achieve great things,” Mamadjonov said.  “I want a world title more than anything I have ever dreamed of in my life.”

Mamadjonov is proud to be represented by King.

“Don King is a superstar in my country,” Mamadjonov said.  “Just the fact I was meeting with him in his office today was news in Uzbekistan.  I can’t wait to tell everyone back home he is now my promoter.

Trainer-manager Richardson echoed the feelings of his fighter.

“Don always took my calls when I was looking for a promoter,” Richardson said, “and I never forget that.  When fate brought us together for the Santana fight, I was reminded that Don is a world promoter.  I’ve always said that if you are or want to be a world champion boxer, Don King is the guy you want to be with.” (photo of Don King by Keisha Morrisey )

Denis Lebedev & Guillermo Jones Meet In WBA Cruiserweight Championship On May 17

The long-awaited unification bout between World Boxing Association cruiserweight champion Denis Lebedev (25-1, 19 KOs), from Chekhov, Russia, and WBA cruiserweight champion in recess Guillermo “El  Felino” Jones (38-3-2, 30 KOs), from Colon, Panama, will take place on May 17 at Crocus City Hall in Moscow, Russia.

Jones’ promoter Don King is thrilled to have his fighter appearing in Moscow with co-promoters Andrey Ryabinsky and Vlad Hrunov.

“My Russian co-promoters named the fight, ‘The One Will Stand,’ and it will be from Russia with love,” King said.  “This is a gigantic promotion between Russia and Panama and I want to thank Andrey Ryabinsky for making this possible.

“The Panamanian people and their President Ricardo Martinelli will be watching with great interest to see Guillermo return home with a unified world title.”

Hrunov presented Lebedev’s two most recent matches in Crocus City Hall and looks forward to hosting the upcoming event there on May 17.

“Crocus City Hall is like the Madison Square Garden of Russia,” Hrunov said.  “This is a first class venue that opened just three years ago.  It’s beautiful and run professionally.  It has 7,000 seats and we expect them all to be filled as demand has been strong since tickets went on sale in late February.”

Lebedev is thrilled to be defending his title in his native country and pointed out he comes from the city named after the writer Anton Chekhov.

“I come from Chekhov and strong people come from my city,” Lebedev said.  “I’m glad Don, Andrey and Vlad have named the fight, ‘The One Will Stand,’ as I plan on being the last man standing at the end of the fight.”

Lebedev is trained by fellow Russian and former undisputed junior welterweight champion Kostya Tszyu.

Jones is anxious to get back into the ring and has predicted that he will dispatch Lebedev in five rounds or less.

“I tell the Russian fans who are ringside to be careful because there will be blood,” Jones said.  “I am the tiger but I don’t speak Russian.  No translator will be needed as my hands will speak for me.”

Arreola vs Stiverne HBO; ARREOLA VS. STIVERNE WBC WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP ELIMINATION BOUT SATURDAY * APRIL 27 * 3 PM CITIZENS BUSINESS BANK ARENA Ontario, California

The beat goes on. Riverside's Chris "The Nightmare" Arreola (35-2, 30 KOs) will fight Bermane Stiverne (22-1-1, 20 KOs) of Las Vegas on Saturday, April 27 at the Citizens Business Bank Arena in Ontario, California said Dan Goossen, president of Goossen Tutor Promotions.

Arreola and Stiverne, the WBC #1 and #2 world rated heavyweights, respectively, face each other in the "Boxing Before Dark" 12-round WBC World Championship Heavyweight Elimination main event, with the winner guaranteed to immediately fight for the World Championship.

Rescheduled after Arreola was forced to postpone a previously scheduled fight with Stiverne due to illness, the crowd-pleasing heavyweight was thrilled with the new date.

"I'm glad we were able to reschedule this terrific heavyweight matchup so the boxing fans can look forward to an exciting night of action on HBO® with the heavyweight showdown between Cristobal Arreola and Bermane Stiverne," said Kery Davis, Senior Vice President of Programming, HBO® Sports.

"The illness that forced me to pull out of the fight was unfortunate but I am very happy to once again be healthy and thankful to my promoter Goossen Tutor and HBO for rescheduling my fight," stated Arreola. "Being less than 100% against an opponent like Stiverne and in a fight of this magnitude would not have been the best decision for my career. I'm back in training camp, completely healthy and fully motivated for April 27."

Said Dan Goossen, "Heavyweights, especially hard-hitting, aggressive heavyweights, always get the fans excited, and this is a perfect fight to display that excitement."

Said Stiverne, "The thing about Arreola is he's a tough customer, but I have noticed that all of his opponents seem to fight the same way. They come into the ring with great intentions before falling into his traps. They have a game plan but they seem to forget. They follow the plan for a few rounds and then they let him take over. I will not do that. I'm bringing my ax to the fight and I'm going to chop the tree down."

"Arreola is successful at intimidation but you can't intimidate me. The fans are going to see the best Bermane Stiverne there is. I plan to impress and move to the next level."

"This fight with Arreola became personal for me after the postponement. I've been going back and forth for so long waiting for this fight to happen that I'm now taking this personally. Time spent with my friends and family has been taken away from me, so it's good he and I are finally going to get it on in Southern California on April 27."

"It'll be a great fight between Arreola and Stiverne," Stiverne's promoter, Don King, predicted. "It's the next step in bringing the world championship back to America. The fight is a must see."

In addition, being showcased that night will be Olympian twin brothers from Norwalk, CA, Javier (13-1, 5KOs), the 2008 US Olympian and Oscar Molina (2-0, 1KO), the 2012 Mexican Olympian. Also featured in a 4-round bout, the pride of the Ten Goose Gym, up-and-coming Juan Funez (1-0) of Van Nuys.
The Arreola-Stiverne showdown will be the opening bout of a special presentation of HBO® World Championship Boxing at 8:30 p.m. ET/PT.

No Holds Barred: Bernard Hopkins, Tavoris Cloud, Don King, and Reflections on Real Steel‏

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman previews the fight between the unbeaten IBF champion Tavoris Cloud (24-0, 19 KOs) and the 48-year-old legend Bernard "The Executioner" Hopkins (52-6, 32 KOs), and discusses its significance in the context of the lessons of the 2011 science fiction film "Real Steel".
The Cloud-Hopkins fight takes place Saturday, March 9, at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, and will be televised live in the U.S. on HBO.
In "Real Steel", set in the year 2020, robot boxing has replaced human boxing and, apparently, MMA. This film was just repeated on Showtime in the U.S. on Saturday, March 2 -- right before the live Showtime boxing card headlined by the wild Abril-Bogere fight.
The film "Real Steel" is loosely based on the 1956 short story "Steel" by Richard Matheson, which was made into a 1963 episode of "The Twilight Zone" TV series starring Lee Marvin. In both the short story and the TV show, boxing had been banned; the movie is more ambiguous about the future legal status of the human fighting sports. In the U.S., the debut show of the Robot Combat League on the Syfy network last Tuesday, February 26, featuring 12 eight-foot robot boxers in a tournament format, drew over 1.35 million viewers, with a total of nine weekly episodes already filmed.

Even before all this buzz about robot fighting, boxing has long been a largely tragic sport. It is a slowly dying sport that is killing its own people, but which we still sometimes love. Therein lies the degree of sadness with which we approach it, especially when a 48-year-old fighter is involved.
We spoke with Bernard Hopkins, Tavoris Cloud, Cloud's new trainer Abel Sanchez, and Cloud's promoter, the one and only Don King, about this fight on a media conference call this past Wednesday.
"It's going to be a barnburner on March the 9th," promised Don King on this conference call. "Get ready. We coming. We coming to Brooklyn. And no one could be prouder. And if you cannot hear us, we'll say it a little louder."
We shall see whose barn burns down Saturday night.

Hopkins-Cloud conference call quotes

BERNARD HOPKINS, Three-Time And Two-Division World Champion & Oldest Fighter In History To Win A World Championship

“Age is not an enemy to me. The clock is not something to try to stop. The man upstairs can’t even do that. You can get the daylight to be earlier or the darkness to be later, but the clock has to move forward.

“People will always tell me, ‘You can’t do this. You can’t do that.’ When I hear that, it gives me motivation. I know there are some things in life that are out of reach. Some people are not capable of doing certain things. I have been doing this half of my life. I know what I am capable of.

“Some people are trying to write my destiny, but when you see a guy that has a track record that has proven to be more right than wrong over 28 years, Cloud has to say that he has a challenge. In reality, he is going to have to train harder than he ever has before.

“[To Cloud] If you ain’t ready now, seven or eight weeks out, then you’re in trouble.

“I’m letting you all know that the smart money goes on me. The other money goes somewhere else. If you want to bet against me, that’s your prerogative.

“[To Cloud] You’re 20 years younger than me, but you are looking at the number, not looking at the man.

“If you’ve never thrown punch and you’re making a judgment about me, then you’re a fool. You are making a decision based on what you think, not what you know.

“I am not underestimating Cloud. He isn’t beating a Yusuf Mack here. He is trying to beat a legacy. He is trying to beat a legend.

“Don and I are alumni of the sport. He helped build my career. At the end of the day, everyone he threw in front of me helped secure my legacy in the middleweight division. I am at least 15-0 against him. He really helped me without even knowing it.

“I understand that I have a blessing to not only make history once but two, three and four times. I understand you will miss me when I’m not here.

“Who is going to run from a 48 year old man? Cloud isn’t going to run. He’s going to fight. I’m going to be the professor and teach him his ABC’s.

“I have never been the favorite in anything in my life. No matter what I’ve done. I would rather be the underdog than the favorite.

“After I beat Cloud, Don King will have to pawn his jacket [to make money], and that jacket is just as old as me.

“[To Cloud] Don King is going to make sure you do your business. His empire is on your shoulders. You’re the last horse. There’s no one left in the stable.

“[To Don King] Enjoy your day because after March 9, there will be a big celebration of your long lasting promotional legacy as I send you into retirement.”

TAVORIS CLOUD, Undefeated IBF Light Heavyweight World Champion

“I want to thank Bernard Hopkins for calling me out for this fight. It’s weird when a champion gets called out, but like he [Hopkins] says, he’s different.

“I am willing to accept the challenge. I don’t duck. I don’t run.

“On March 9, I’ll be in great shape. I’ll be here to put on the fight on my life.

“People ask me if I’m worried about Bernard’s experience, his tricks and this and that. He might have more tricks than me, but I’m going to throw punches. You have to throw punches to win fights. I’m definitely going to win the fight by throwing punches.

“Training camp is going well. I’m going to be in the best shape of my life. I’m going to bring my A plus game.

“Hopkins doesn’t faze me. He’s up there banging on the podium and yelling. It just goes in one ear and out the other.

“My opinion is that he’s talking to convince himself and motivate himself. It isn’t directed at me.

“I’m game for his experience. I’m not inexperienced myself. If he’s going to be dirty with me, I can be dirty right back.

“I think Don won the war of words against Bernard. Don got into Bernard’s head. Don got Bernard thinking about what he was saying, not the other way around.”

DON KING, Renowned Boxing Promoter & President, Don King Productions

“Hello Brooklyn! Bernard is in foreign territory. I’m at home here in Brooklyn. He doesn’t know the half of what it’s going to mean fighting here. Brooklynites know what time it is. It’s time to put you [Hopkins] out to rest and reside.

“I’m delighted to be here at the new Barclays Center. It’s spiritually redeeming. It’s alive. It’s a family affair here. I’m looking forward to a sold-out crowd at Barclays Center on March 9. We’re looking to make history here in Brooklyn. History in this new beautiful building,

“Bernard Hopkins is one of the greatest fighters of our time. He has shown the tenacity and perseverance. It’s evident that he is different.

“When the hands of time are moving, the old moves on and the young moves forward. Bernard is stubborn. He is resistant. Something has got to give and give it will on March 9.

“When you see the new face of glory, the excitement of what youth can do, you believe in God and that is deeply imbedded in the heart and mind of Tavoris Cloud.

“I’m happy to be here at Barclays Center. I am delighted to be associated with Golden Boy. I want friend and foe alike to be a part of this history making night when we let Bernard Hopkins take this weight off of his shoulders.

“There was a lot of thunder and weather that happened here in New York when Hurricane Sandy came through and devastated so many homes. With his [Tavoris] name being Cloud, we are going to work toward helping those affected by Sandy.”

NAAZIM RICHARDSON, Hopkins’ Trainer

“Anybody that knows anything about boxing on this level knows Bernard Hopkins. You may not be familiar with Tavoris Cloud, but I’m familiar with him. He’s an exciting fighter. He’s focused and very dangerous. I know what this kid is capable of doing. He’s going to be up for fighting a legend.

“I was on tour with Bernard and Don King and you are getting a small preview of what they can say. I was with Don in Puerto Rico and he was Puerto Rican then and he’s a Brooklynite now. That is the magic of Don King. He’s one of the icons of our sport and you’ve got to respect that.

“You want to see this fight because our history has shown, the more dangerous the opponent, the higher his game rises and Tavoris Cloud is a dangerous opponent.

“When you come to Brooklyn to see this fight, be prepared to see a fight of the year candidate. You want to be able to say you saw it live. You want to be able to say you saw it here at the Barclays Center.”

DAVID ITSKOWITCH, Chief Operating Officer, Golden Boy Promotions

“I would have let Bernard and Don keep talking, but we would have been here for days.

“If you weren’t able to be here on October 20, Barclays Center is an unbelievable venue. It’s state of the art. There is a great staff here with great customer service.

“Bernard Hopkins thrives off of people doubting him.

“For those of you who didn’t see Bernard’s record breaking fight with Pascal, before the seventh round, Bernard decided to drop to the canvas and do push ups. It was amazing.

“It is always an honor to introduce a future first ballot Hall of Famer and legend in the sport…Bernard Hopkins.”

JAMES PRINCE, Cloud’s Manager

“We are very excited about this opportunity. Out of all of the fights that are coming here [to Barclays Center] this year, this is the one you want to see.

“What can you say about Bernard Hopkins? He holds his own very well, and Cloud is going to hold his own on March 9. It’s going to be a war.”

SEAN SAADEH, Vice President of Programming, Barclays Center

“On behalf of Bruce Ratner and Brett Yormark, we’re thrilled to host our third night of championship boxing.

“We’re delighted to have a true champion here and the oldest fighter in history to win a title fighting at the newest venue.

“We’re pleased that Bernard wants to get in the ring once again and that it’s going to be here. Tavoris is a great champion and Brooklyn is going to love his style.

“There is so much potential for boxing here in Brooklyn and we want this arena to be a fighter’s ultimate goal.

“We look forward to welcoming boxing back to Barclays Center on March 9.”

KERY DAVIS, Senior Vice President of Programming, HBO Sports

“There is some world class trash talking between Don King and Bernard Hopkins on this stage.

“As a Bronx native, I have always had a love-hate relationship with the borough of Brooklyn, but as a New Yorker I love the excitement that Barclays Center has brought to the New York landscape. It is a pleasure to have Barclays Center as an option for boxing events.

“This will be the twentieth time that Bernard Hopkins will be on HBO as he sets out again to make history against Light Heavyweight World Champion Tavoris Cloud.

“Bernard is one of the highest rated fighters we have on our network. When he beat Jean Pascal to become the oldest fighter in history to win a world title in 2011, it was the highest rated fight of that year.

“Tavoris is a worthy, exciting, relentless, young light heavyweight champion. It’s going to be a great night.”

Undefeated Don King Prospect Angelo ‘La Cobra’ Santana Makes First Television Appearance On Friday, Nov. 16 Live on ShoBox Doubleheader From Gulfstream Park In Hallandale Beach, Fla.
SHOWTIME-Televised Doubleheader: Undefeated Omar ‘Oh!’ Henry Vs. ‘King’ James de la Rosa Santana to Take on Fellow Unbeaten Juan ‘Johnny’ Garcia

Don King hosted a press conference today at the historic Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Fla., where he will present two of his top undefeated prospects in separate bouts during a televised doubleheader on ShoBox: The New Generation on Friday, Nov. 16 (live on SHOWTIME 11 p.m. ET/PT).  Undefeated junior middleweight contender Omar “Oh!” Henry (12-0-1, 9 KOs), from Chicago, will face “King” James de la Rosa (21-1, 12 KOs), from San Benito, Texas, Angelo “La Cobra” Santana (13-0, 10 KOs), from Miami, and Juan “Johnny” Garcia (13-0, 8 KOs), from Holland, Mich., will meet in a collision of unbeaten lightweight contenders.

King’s press conference featured Santana, 24, a two-time Cuban national champion who has fought professionally out of Miami since 2008.  He has stopped his last six opponents within four rounds.

Santana will face a serious test from Garcia, whose greatest claim to fame came when he outpointed previously undefeated Cuban Yordenis Ugas on March 23.

“I know Garcia is coming to fight but so am I,” said Santana, who’s coming off a career-best victory, a third-round technical knockout over highly regarded Justin Savi on June 23.  “It is our hope that this fight does not go to the judges’ scorecards.  I’m ready to rumble. This will be a good fight for as long as it lasts.”

Eighty-one-year-old Hall of Fame promoter Don King is looking forward to promoting his first event at South Florida’s Gulfstream Park, which in recent years has added a beautiful casino and an exciting indoor-outdoor shopping and dining area known as The Village.

“Gulfstream Park is bigger and better than ever,” said King, whose offices are located in nearby Deerfield Beach.  “The outdoor area where we will erect the ring over a fountain will make for one of the most intimate and elegant fight venues ever.  South Florida fight fans will love it and it will look great on SHOWTIME.”
