LIFE AFTER THE OLYMPICS: THE CLARESSA SHIELDS STORY

http://www.blackcelebkids.com/2012/08/life-after-the-olympics-the-claressa-shields-story/

Since returning home to Flint, Michigan on August 13th, Olympic gold medalist Claressa Shields’ life has been in a constant daze of cameras and flashing lights. The 17-year-old athlete made history as the first woman to win an Olympic gold medal in the sport of boxing.

“When I left [for London], there might have been 10 people who saw me off from the airport,” Claressa told theGrio. “[After the Olympics], I came back and there were 600 people at the airport. There were a bunch of people from the city, a bunch of people who weren’t from Flint were here. It was overwhelming. It kind of freaked me out.”

She went on the say, “I’ve just been doing interviews and signing autographs and pictures. It’s just really crazy but I kind of still don’t believe it. I still really haven’t sat down and said ‘yeah, I’m ranked No. 1 in the world and I’m an Olympic Gold Medalist.’ It just hasn’t hit me.”

Claressa was introduced to boxing by her dad, Bo Shields. She started in the ring when she was 11 years old. She won 2 Junior Olympics championships and at her first open tournament, the National Police Athletic League championships, she won the middleweight title and qualified for the Olympic trials.

“At the Olympics, for those eight minutes of each fight, all that attention was on me,” she said. “Either the crowd is with you or against you. When I was fighting [Laurell in the quarterfinals], all of them doubting me made me step up even more.”

Companies are already chomping at the bit, ready to get a chance to have the teen boxer endorse their products. Adidas as well as Chevrolet are two of the companies that want Claressa to sign on the dotted line to be the face for their brands.

Not only has Clareesa been approached by company sponsors, she has also been approached by other boxers. Oscar De La Hoya, Bob Arum, and Floyd Mayweather have all asked her about fighting professionally. For now, Claressa is focused on school and leaning toward training for the 2016 Olympic games before going pro. After high school, she plans on attending college where she would like to study photojournalism. She’s not sure where she wants to attend college, but Michigan State University and University of Michigan’s Flint campus are in the running.

“Either I could go after the money now because I’m in high demand, or I can stay amateur and get endorsements and then I’ll still be living OK,” Shields said. “I just want to be able to help my family, but I don’t think going pro right now will do it. When I’m 21 [in 2016], there won’t even be a question.”

No matter what path she takes, Claressa’s main focus is her mother and two younger siblings. She wants to help support her family financially like they’ve supported her emotionally. Being able to move out of Flint, Michigan is important to Claressa. She said, “My little brother is why I want to get out of Flint,” she added. “Young boys get killed here, no matter what age. Even though he’s not a bad kid, you can still run into trouble hanging around the wrong people.”

Claressa is a great example for young people that working hard can make dreams come true. Great job!

“WORLD CHAMPIONS-MADE IN AMERICA” ANDRE WARD VS. CHAD DAWSON WARD AND DAWSON MEDIA DAY QUOTES

Undefeated WBA, WBC and RING super middleweight world champion Andre “SOG” Ward (25-0, 13 KOs) and WBC and RING light heavyweight titleholder “Bad” Chad Dawson (31-1, 17 KOs) both held open media workouts this week from their respective training camps in Oakland, CA and Las Vegas, NV. Media attendees were given the opportunity to watch training and ask the fighters questions about their upcoming September 8 “WORLD CHAMPIONS-MADE IN AMERICA.”
SPECIAL NOTE: Both fighters will participate in an international media conference call next Tuesday, September 28 starting at 3:00pm ET/Noon PT.
Andre Ward Media Day Quotes:
Q & A with Andre “SOG” Ward
What’s it like to fight back in Oakland?
“It’s always great to be home. A lot of people think it’s a given when you fight at home, like it’s an easy thing, but it’s not. There’s a lot of pressure, but good pressure when you fight at home to defend the house. I consider Oracle Arena my house and the Bay Area as a whole my house. I’m doing what I always do and I’m preparing well and I want to put on a great show for the fans.
What motivates you as a champion?
“What motivates me is first and foremost, my understanding that God gave me a something. When God gives you a gift and a talent you can be whatever. I’m a natural competitor that loves to compete and I’m striving for greatness. I don’t believe I’m there yet and I got a lot of work to do. God willing I have a few more years left in the game but I want to be great. And if one day I could be considered great, and have a hall of fame career, I want to look back and say it’s a job well done.”
What are your thoughts on fighting Chad Dawson?
“It’s a tough fight for both men. Not just me dealing with Chad Dawson, but Chad Dawson dealing with me and vice versa. That’s the beauty of the fight and it sells itself because you got two young guys who are well decorated in terms of our accomplishments, and we’re literally putting it all on the line at the peak of our careers. I don’t think anyone can ask for anything more than that.”
Chad Dawson Media Day Quotes:
Chad Dawson Talks About Fighting Andre Ward
Can you tell us how you’re feeling physically, spiritually and mentally with just a few weeks away?
“I’m in great spirits. The weight is coming off, as you can see I’m real slim (smiling). Mentally, physically everything is on point. I’m excited to be in a big fight like this. I’m excited that the fight is approaching fast. Everything is just great right now”
You’ve been in big fights before, is this fight with Andre Ward at the top?
“I would say this is at the top because the magnitude of the fight. You got two young guys, both champions in our divisions. The only difference is I’m going down to his division and challenging him for his title. I look at it like a big challenge for me due to the fact that I have to lose an extra seven pounds to get down to 168. So it’s a challenge for me and it’s a challenge I’m looking forward to. The weight is good and I left the gym yesterday weighing in at 176 pounds. I feel great.”
Andre has been getting a lot of notoriety as being a pound for pound fighter, so how do you feel about fighting a guy like that?
“He’s still just another fighter. I understand the fact that he won a gold medal and he has a great amateur background, but this is the pros. He’s never been in there with a fighter like me. I don’t care what the media says or what people say, he’s never been in the ring with a fighter like me. On September 8th he’s going to see something different in there, something he’s never seen before.”
“Ward vs. Dawson – World Champions – Made In America”
Andre Ward vs. Chad Dawson World Championship showdown, set to take place September 8 at the Oracle Arena in Oakland, California. The co-feature will see WBC Champion Antonio DeMarco battle John “The Gladiator” Molina Jr. in a 12-round fight for the WBC Lightweight title. Floyd Mayweather is Back on Wrestle Mania XXIV

Hot 97 radio interviewed Floyd Mayweather today who made an announcement that he would be returning to the canvas not to box on the contrary to wrestle, yes he will be in a WWE ring as apposed to a boxing ring. According to sources from WrestlingInc.com Mayweather will be appearing to a large mass audience in the MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford in New Jersey, confirmation by WWE is yet to be announced.
We have all been waiting for some big news after the king of boxing and highest paid athlete was released from prison and this is the big one. Now he has a further aim to get back into tip top shape and return to the ladder of ultimate sports. Bob Arum promoter of Top Rank Boxing said that he wanted to make the super fight between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao in 2013, and now with 50 Cent reportedly owning (TMT) Promotions in collaboration with Floyd Mayweather Jr., a sudden explosion has just taken place and the dust is yet to settle on the boxing scene.
Over the next few weeks we will see how future boxing fights develop and precisely which fights actually take place, or in the case of TMT Promotions which fighter’s contracts are almost up. It’s looking more exciting for fans that 50Cent and Floyd Mayweather will be hosting their events at the biggest venues and opening up their own fight schedule very shortly; this will be without Floyd Mayweather facing an opponent.
The world wrestling entertainment is an American publically owned Entertainment Company with major revenue sources coming from film, music and product licensing. It reaches 13 million viewers in the U.S and broadcasts its shows in 30 languages. There have been a lot of network changes and high- definition qualities added for these events which are thoroughly enjoyed at this present time and Floyd Mayweather will be bringing in his boxing audience again.
Lots of feuds have developed over the course of many years between fighters, Floyd Mayweather himself was involved in his own confrontation with the “The Big Show” this was a P.P.V in February 2008 in Vegas, he was involved in a storyline which was a physical altercation with “The Big Show”, Mayweather jumped the security barrier in an attempt to assist a Mexican professional wrestler and attacked him, in the end Mayweather defeated Big Show using brass knuckles to maintain his unbeaten record. Mayweather claimed he was paid a recorded figure of $20 Million for this fight. The figures were huge back in 2008; it’s unimaginable what they will be this time round, depending on the opponent and drama that will unfold.

Managing Fighters

Managing Fighters

This is a terrible thing to say, but boxing management and promotion are both patently paternalistic activities. I wish there were a way that they could not be, but there isn't. Boxers have been encouraged to be children; that they are is in the best interests of those who control the business. So, as managers, we make decisions that often overlook the fact that we are acting as agents for grown men. In a deeply codified system--a deeply entrenched culture--there is almost no mechanism available that lets you have an adult business partnership with a fighter. One of the reasons a guy like Bernard Hopkins is so despised within the industry is that he makes adult decisions on his own behalf. That kind of behavior works in opposition to the conventional boxing hierarchy. It's a good reason to love Bernard Hopkins. (photo By; Keisha Morrisey)

Dmitriy Salita Wins Wants Malignaggi in a Battle of Brooklyn

Dmitriy Salita Wins Wants Malignaggi in a Battle of Brooklyn

Dmitriy Salita made a triumphant return to the ring on August 4th scoring an impressive fourth round TKO over rugged, battle tested, Juan Venezuela. Venezuela is a veteran of 130 fights and has been in the ring and gone the distance with world champions and top contenders.

After completing an intensive training camp in Detroit at the world famous Kronk Gym, Salita, 34-1- 1 (18 KOs), looked sharp in his nationally televised Fox Sports Showcase fight.

Interestingly the color commentator for the show was Paul Malignaggi, the WBA Welterweight Champion, and you can click on the link below to watch the fight and hear what Malignaggi had to say. Right now Salita’s goal is to challenge fellow Brooklynite, Malignaggi, for his title.

After his big win, Salita walked across the ring over to where Paulie was sitting ringside at the media desk, leaned through the ropes, bumped fists with him and called him out for a fight. Both men displayed class and the kind of dignity that the better fighters often have.

The goal is an all Brooklyn showdown at the opening of the new Barclays Center on October 20th.

Women’s Boxing Set To Flourish With Major London Event In 2013‏

Great Britain's Nicola Adams, Ireland’s Katie Taylor and America’s Claressa Shields may have won Gold at the London 2012 Olympics, however all the Women that took part deserve some of the glory and recognition for the part they played.

Each and every female boxer that took part in this historic event shone brightly, they proved without doubt that Women’s Boxing is just as competitive and exciting as those of their male counterparts.

Things may look rosy at this time, everyone is high on the stunning debut of Women’s Boxing at the Olympics, but just how long will this last before the excitement we all felt, as we watched Nicola, Katie and Claressa fight their way to Gold, becomes just a faded memory.

The natural progression for any of the male boxers taking part in the Olympics is a lucrative promotional deal with Frank Warren, Eddie Hearn or Frank Maloney, however with the British Boxing hierarchy’s attitude towards Women’s Boxing this may not be an avenue open to Nicola Adams, Natasha Jonas and Savannah Marshall, unless that is they fight abroad like the current crop of British female pro Boxers.

British pro Boxer, and coach at the TRAD TKO gym in Canning Town, Marianne Marston may just prove to be the White Knight that Women’s Professional Boxing has been waiting for.

Marianne - who was discovered by legendary Heavyweight Champion of the World Smokin’ Joe Frazier, and trained by Joe and his son Marvis at their landmark gym in North Philadelphia until it closed in ‘08 - is already well known for her campaigning for the Women’s Boxing cause through the media, as well as encouraging Women into the sport through her highly successful London based Women’s Boxing Classes.

But what a lot of people don’t know is that Marianne has also been highly active in her attempts to bring a World significant Women’s Boxing event to the UK.

It hasn’t been an easy journey, in mid 2011 Marianne, along with father and daughter promoting team Steve and Olivia Goodwin, proposed an all female event to the BBBofC.

The event, which was to feature three Women’s International Boxing Association (WIBA) Championship bouts, was turned down on the basis that the BBBofC do not recognise the WIBA, or come to that any of the Female Championship Boxing organisations.

Not to be deterred Marianne continued in her quest, and as she explains it finally seems set to happen early in 2013.

“Firstly I have to congratulate Nicola, Katie and Claressa for their winning the first Olympic Women’s Boxing Gold medals.

They all fought brilliantly, they did the sport proud, as did all the girls that took part, now it’s time to truly establish Women’s Boxing here in the UK.

100 years ago they said Women couldn’t be doctors, or lawyers, or vote.

30 years ago they said Women weren’t capable of running a marathon.

This year we have proved everyone wrong who said Women couldn’t box.

Nicola, Katie, Claressa and all the female Boxers at London 2012 have proved to the World that Women can fight just as well as the men, and, just as important that there is an appetite and an audience for Women’s Boxing.

So now we’re coming for all those in the World of Professional Boxing who have tried to stop Women from competing here in the UK. You know who you are, and you have no excuses left.”

With her frustrations well and truly vented Marianne then continued, “After the board (BBBofC) refused to sanction the event in 2011, I had no intention of giving up, I’m not a quitter.

First I contacted World Boxing Federation President, Howard Goldberg.

I particularly wanted to work with the WBF after noticing on BoxRec that most of the #1 ranked girls, people like Zita Zatyko, Christina Hammer, Anne Sophie Mathis, were all WBF Champions

I then had a chat with promoter Miranda Carter to see if she would be interested in promoting the event.

Miranda’s great, she’s always been a big supporter of Women’s Boxing and regularly has a female fight on her shows.

Once Howard and Miranda were on board I contacted another big supporter of Women’s Boxing, Bruce Baker, Chairman of the PBPA (Professional Boxing Promoters Association).

I particularly wanted to work with Bruce as I had found out that the Masters titles were originally created to female fighters, so that they could have a domestic title to fight for.

All went well and it was decided to aim for October this year, however after discussions with potential sponsors earlier this year, it soon became clear that we would be better off aiming at early 2013, as many of the companies we approached said that their current budget had been decimated by the Olympics.

This delay actually may have done us a big favour, the original concept was we would be promoting an all female show headlined by a World title or two, but what we have now is a totally different concept.

Howard is particularly proud that the WBF Female World Champions are highly ranked, most the World #1 of their division, and those that aren’t #1 are all ranked in the top 5.

Because of this we decided to make this a truly World significant annual event, and created the WBF Women’s World Boxing Championships.

It’s getting quite exciting, we’ve got the website up, facebook and twitter accounts and WBF European coordinator Olaf Schroeder already has the basis of a provisional card in place.

There will be a minimum of four World Championship bouts, supported by a WBF International title fight, an International Masters title fight and two special Challenge Cup bouts.

It’s going be truly international, we’ll have German pair Christina Hammer and Ramona Kuehne, as well as Hungary’s Zita Zatyko defending their World titles.

Maria Lindberg will be challenging for the vacant Light Middle World title, probably against fellow Swede Mikaela Lauren.

We’re also hoping to get Holly Holm versus Anne Sophie Mathis. It would be awesome to host the trilogy fight here in London.

Their first two fights were stormers. Anne Sophie won the first and Holly the second, both were fought in America, but I can’t see why the American’s should get all the good fights, let’s have the decider on neutral ground right here in London.

We have Juliette Winter and New York based Suszannah Warner fighting for the vacant WBF International Flyweight title.

My TRAD TKO gym mate, former World #2 Amateur, Areti Mastrodouka will fight Kristine Shergold for the International Masters Super Featherweight title. Last time this pair met they bought the house down, it was fight of the night.

We couldn’t put on a show on here without having Angel McKenzie on it, she’s great and has helped me so much since I’ve been back in the UK.

Angel will be fighting one of the special Challenge Cup bouts, and I’ll be fighting for the other.

Going back to the Olympics for a second, It would be great to have at least one of the girls that competed on the show. Obviously we’d really love it to be Nicola, Katie or Claressa, but in all honesty all the girls were brilliant, it would be great to have one or two come and compete at this event as well.

With such a lineup I’m sure we’ll easily fill the ExCel to capacity, just as the girls did during the Olympics, it will be electric, I can’t wait.”

The date for the first World Boxing Federation Women’s World Boxing Championships 2013 is expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
