Managing Fighters
Managing Fighters
This is a terrible thing to say, but boxing management and promotion are both patently paternalistic activities. I wish there were a way that they could not be, but there isn't. Boxers have been encouraged to be children; that they are is in the best interests of those who control the business. So, as managers, we make decisions that often overlook the fact that we are acting as agents for grown men. In a deeply codified system--a deeply entrenched culture--there is almost no mechanism available that lets you have an adult business partnership with a fighter. One of the reasons a guy like Bernard Hopkins is so despised within the industry is that he makes adult decisions on his own behalf. That kind of behavior works in opposition to the conventional boxing hierarchy. It's a good reason to love Bernard Hopkins. (photo By; Keisha Morrisey)

Dmitriy Salita Wins Wants Malignaggi in a Battle of Brooklyn
Dmitriy Salita made a triumphant return to the ring on August 4th scoring an impressive fourth round TKO over rugged, battle tested, Juan Venezuela. Venezuela is a veteran of 130 fights and has been in the ring and gone the distance with world champions and top contenders.
After completing an intensive training camp in Detroit at the world famous Kronk Gym, Salita, 34-1- 1 (18 KOs), looked sharp in his nationally televised Fox Sports Showcase fight.
Interestingly the color commentator for the show was Paul Malignaggi, the WBA Welterweight Champion, and you can click on the link below to watch the fight and hear what Malignaggi had to say. Right now Salita’s goal is to challenge fellow Brooklynite, Malignaggi, for his title.
After his big win, Salita walked across the ring over to where Paulie was sitting ringside at the media desk, leaned through the ropes, bumped fists with him and called him out for a fight. Both men displayed class and the kind of dignity that the better fighters often have.
The goal is an all Brooklyn showdown at the opening of the new Barclays Center on October 20th.

Women’s Boxing Set To Flourish With Major London Event In 2013
Each and every female boxer that took part in this historic event shone brightly, they proved without doubt that Women’s Boxing is just as competitive and exciting as those of their male counterparts.
Things may look rosy at this time, everyone is high on the stunning debut of Women’s Boxing at the Olympics, but just how long will this last before the excitement we all felt, as we watched Nicola, Katie and Claressa fight their way to Gold, becomes just a faded memory.
The natural progression for any of the male boxers taking part in the Olympics is a lucrative promotional deal with Frank Warren, Eddie Hearn or Frank Maloney, however with the British Boxing hierarchy’s attitude towards Women’s Boxing this may not be an avenue open to Nicola Adams, Natasha Jonas and Savannah Marshall, unless that is they fight abroad like the current crop of British female pro Boxers.
British pro Boxer, and coach at the TRAD TKO gym in Canning Town, Marianne Marston may just prove to be the White Knight that Women’s Professional Boxing has been waiting for.
Marianne - who was discovered by legendary Heavyweight Champion of the World Smokin’ Joe Frazier, and trained by Joe and his son Marvis at their landmark gym in North Philadelphia until it closed in ‘08 - is already well known for her campaigning for the Women’s Boxing cause through the media, as well as encouraging Women into the sport through her highly successful London based Women’s Boxing Classes.
But what a lot of people don’t know is that Marianne has also been highly active in her attempts to bring a World significant Women’s Boxing event to the UK.
It hasn’t been an easy journey, in mid 2011 Marianne, along with father and daughter promoting team Steve and Olivia Goodwin, proposed an all female event to the BBBofC.
The event, which was to feature three Women’s International Boxing Association (WIBA) Championship bouts, was turned down on the basis that the BBBofC do not recognise the WIBA, or come to that any of the Female Championship Boxing organisations.
Not to be deterred Marianne continued in her quest, and as she explains it finally seems set to happen early in 2013.
“Firstly I have to congratulate Nicola, Katie and Claressa for their winning the first Olympic Women’s Boxing Gold medals.
They all fought brilliantly, they did the sport proud, as did all the girls that took part, now it’s time to truly establish Women’s Boxing here in the UK.
100 years ago they said Women couldn’t be doctors, or lawyers, or vote.
30 years ago they said Women weren’t capable of running a marathon.
This year we have proved everyone wrong who said Women couldn’t box.
Nicola, Katie, Claressa and all the female Boxers at London 2012 have proved to the World that Women can fight just as well as the men, and, just as important that there is an appetite and an audience for Women’s Boxing.
So now we’re coming for all those in the World of Professional Boxing who have tried to stop Women from competing here in the UK. You know who you are, and you have no excuses left.”
With her frustrations well and truly vented Marianne then continued, “After the board (BBBofC) refused to sanction the event in 2011, I had no intention of giving up, I’m not a quitter.
First I contacted World Boxing Federation President, Howard Goldberg.
I particularly wanted to work with the WBF after noticing on BoxRec that most of the #1 ranked girls, people like Zita Zatyko, Christina Hammer, Anne Sophie Mathis, were all WBF Champions
I then had a chat with promoter Miranda Carter to see if she would be interested in promoting the event.
Miranda’s great, she’s always been a big supporter of Women’s Boxing and regularly has a female fight on her shows.
Once Howard and Miranda were on board I contacted another big supporter of Women’s Boxing, Bruce Baker, Chairman of the PBPA (Professional Boxing Promoters Association).
I particularly wanted to work with Bruce as I had found out that the Masters titles were originally created to female fighters, so that they could have a domestic title to fight for.
All went well and it was decided to aim for October this year, however after discussions with potential sponsors earlier this year, it soon became clear that we would be better off aiming at early 2013, as many of the companies we approached said that their current budget had been decimated by the Olympics.
This delay actually may have done us a big favour, the original concept was we would be promoting an all female show headlined by a World title or two, but what we have now is a totally different concept.
Howard is particularly proud that the WBF Female World Champions are highly ranked, most the World #1 of their division, and those that aren’t #1 are all ranked in the top 5.
Because of this we decided to make this a truly World significant annual event, and created the WBF Women’s World Boxing Championships.
It’s getting quite exciting, we’ve got the website up, facebook and twitter accounts and WBF European coordinator Olaf Schroeder already has the basis of a provisional card in place.
There will be a minimum of four World Championship bouts, supported by a WBF International title fight, an International Masters title fight and two special Challenge Cup bouts.
It’s going be truly international, we’ll have German pair Christina Hammer and Ramona Kuehne, as well as Hungary’s Zita Zatyko defending their World titles.
Maria Lindberg will be challenging for the vacant Light Middle World title, probably against fellow Swede Mikaela Lauren.
We’re also hoping to get Holly Holm versus Anne Sophie Mathis. It would be awesome to host the trilogy fight here in London.
Their first two fights were stormers. Anne Sophie won the first and Holly the second, both were fought in America, but I can’t see why the American’s should get all the good fights, let’s have the decider on neutral ground right here in London.
We have Juliette Winter and New York based Suszannah Warner fighting for the vacant WBF International Flyweight title.
My TRAD TKO gym mate, former World #2 Amateur, Areti Mastrodouka will fight Kristine Shergold for the International Masters Super Featherweight title. Last time this pair met they bought the house down, it was fight of the night.
We couldn’t put on a show on here without having Angel McKenzie on it, she’s great and has helped me so much since I’ve been back in the UK.
Angel will be fighting one of the special Challenge Cup bouts, and I’ll be fighting for the other.
Going back to the Olympics for a second, It would be great to have at least one of the girls that competed on the show. Obviously we’d really love it to be Nicola, Katie or Claressa, but in all honesty all the girls were brilliant, it would be great to have one or two come and compete at this event as well.
With such a lineup I’m sure we’ll easily fill the ExCel to capacity, just as the girls did during the Olympics, it will be electric, I can’t wait.”
The date for the first World Boxing Federation Women’s World Boxing Championships 2013 is expected to be announced in the coming weeks.

“As someone who truly believes in clean sport, I have never used any type of performing enhancing drugs. Everything I’ve achieved was the result of hard work and determination," Berto said. "I am excited that this whole situation is behind me, and I look forward to returning to the ring soon with another exciting performance so stay tuned.”
Berto’s positive test in May revealed extremely small amounts of a banned substance, that were inconsistent with any performance-enhancing effect and were much more consistent with contamination of an otherwise acceptable food or supplement.

Fight: "IRONBOUND THROWDOWN"; Cunningham vs. Gavern, Jennings vs Koval, Belmontes vs. Collado added to Adamek vs Walker Sept. 8 Card
When Tomasz "Goral" Adamek returns to Newark's Prudential Center on Saturday afternoon, September 8, 2012, the popular Polish Kearney resident will headline the "Ironbound Throwdown", another big boxing card featuring a total of four world-rated contenders in three big heavyweight fights.
Scheduled to begin at 2PM, this rare afternoon event brings some of the top names of the current professional boxing scene to Newark's "Ironbound" neighborhood, which has become a hotbed for pro boxing in recent years. Topping the card is former two-time world champion, now rated #4 among heavyweights, Tomasz Adamek, 46-2, 28 KOs, who will face #12 rated Travis Walker of Tallahassee, FL, 39-7-1, 31 KO's in a 12-round heavyweight battle for Adamek's IBF North American Heavyweight Title. However the action on this card is not confined to the main event.
Highlighting the undercard is former two-time cruiserweight champion Steve "USS" Cunningham, 24-4, 12 KOs, who makes his heavyweight debut against Jason Gavern, of Harrisonburg, VA, 21-10-4, 10 KOs. Cunningham, of Philadelphia, currently rated #3 among cruiserweights, recently decided to make the move to the lucrative heavyweight division, looking for bigger challenges and the heavyweight paydays that come with them.
Cunningham is currently working to add weight to his perfectly conditioned frame without sacrificing speed or mobility, as he steps up for the first time to face the larger opposition in boxing's glamour division.
In Jason "The Sensation" Gavern, Cunningham meets a fighter who holds wins over Darnell Wilson and Manuel Quezada, as well as a draw against Johnathon Banks. The always game Gavern is expected to provide the kind of test that will answer any questions about whether Cunningham can compete at his new weight.
In a special 8-round bout, high-rolling Philadelphia heavyweight prospect Bryant Jennings, 16-0, 6 KOs, takes on hard-punching Chris Koval of Youngstown, OH, 25-9, 18 KO's. "Special K," 30, will try to stop the impressive streak that "By By" Jennings has been riding since January. In his last three outings, Jennings has climbed into the top-ten rankings with victories over Maurice Byarm, Sergei Liakhovich, and Steve Collins. His win over Collins earned Jennings the USBA Heavyweight Title.
In a highly anticipated 8-round battle of junior lightweight prospects, "The Corpus Christi Kid," undefeated Jerry Belmontes, 16-0, 5 KOs, meets Dominican-born Joselito Collado, 13-1, 3 KOs, of Jamaica, Queens, NY. A former amateur star, Belmontes will look to start making noise in the professional ranks with a victory over the highly touted Collado, who is coming off a March decision win over Juan Carlos Contreras in a bout that promises to be a war.
Three preliminary bouts round out the action-packed card: Jersey City's Jose Peralta, 9-1, 5 KOs, is scheduled to appear in a 6-round junior welterweight fight; Philadelphia's Karl Dargan puts his perfect 10-0, 5 KOs record on the line in a 6-round lightweight fight, and Brooklyn's Shem Pagan, 2-0, 1 KO, goes for win number three in a 4-round junior welterweight contest.
The fight will be available in Poland on PPV. WealthTV will begin airing undercard bouts live at 3PM ET nationally on Verizon FiOS TV channel 169 and 669 in HD, AT&T U-Verse TV channels 470 and 1470 in HD, along with over 100 cable systems across the country.
Prudential Center doors will open at 1:30PM, first fight is 2:00PM. The card is presented by Main Events in association with Peltz Boxing, and Ziggy Promotions.

Macklin set for Las Vegas debut against former World Champ Alcine
Middleweight contender Matthew "Mack the Knife" Macklin is gearing up for his Las Vegas debut on September 15th where he will take on former World Champ, Joachim Alcine on a card headlined by the eagerly awaited World Middleweight title clash between Sergio Martinezand Julio Cesar Chavez. Macklin pushed Martinez close in a brave effort to dethrone the middleweight kingpin at Madison Square Garden on St. Patrick's Day and has been rewarded for his efforts with another opportunity to showcase his talents in front of a US television audience with the fight live on HBO Pay-Per-View.
Macklin revealed that he can't wait to step between the ropes at the Thomas & Mack Center and will be keen to impress on his Vegas debut. "I've been going to Las Vegas for a long time both as a fight fan and when I was in the Ricky Hatton camp for his big fights over there," said Macklin. "I was due to fight Winky Wright there last year but he pulled out and the fight fell through so I'm looking forward to finally fighting there on such a big night for the middleweight division."
Macklin faces a stiff test in the shape of former WBA Light Middleweight Champ Joachim Alcine with the Canadian based Haitian coming of an excellent win over the hard hitting David Lemieux and the former Irish, British and European Champion admits it will be a hard nights work. "Alcine is a proven fighter, he's a former World Champion who has campaigned at the highest level and it's a massive opportunity for both of us to feature on a live HBO pay-per-view event. He's coming off a great win over Lemieux so I'm sure he will be coming into this with a lot of confidence so it's up to me to burst his bubble."
Macklin is hoping that he can take care of business inside the ring and then take his seat for the main event, a fight that he definitely has a vested interest in. "It's probably the most important middleweight fight since Bernard Hopkins fought Felix Trinidad back in 2001 so it's a fight I would definitely have been ringside for even if I wasn't fighting on the card. It's an intriguing fight, I'm leaning towards Sergio because he's an exceptional athlete but Chavez was very impressive last time out against Andy Lee. He's a huge middleweight, he's very strong, closes the distance well and varies his punches. However Sergio has quicker feet, he's very hard to pin down and his reflexes are excellent so I'd sightly favour him but it wouldn't be a huge surprise if Chavez pulled it out.
"Regardless of how the fight goes I'd love a shot at the winner but obviously I'm going to have to take care of business against Alcine first and that's my only priority right now. I think my last two fights have proven that I'm right up there at the top of one of the most exciting weight divisions in boxing right now. I have the utmost respect for Sergio, he won fair and square but there was nothing between us going into the eleventh round. I was ahead on one of the cards by three rounds and only a point down on the other two cards so it was very much all to play for. I still feel like I can improve an awful lot on that performance, I'd been out of the ring for 9 months beforehand and had just started working with Buddy McGirt again as my trainer so I think with another camp with Buddy under my belt I will be able to show that I'm still an improving fighter."
Macklin has been in training camp in Spain for the fight where he has opened up his own gym. "I've just opened up my own gym in Spain called Macklin's Gym Marbella", explained Macklin. "I've been a bit of a nomad when preparing for fights so it's good to have a base to literally call my own for training camps. I'm really enjoying working with Buddy again because he is such a knowledgeable trainer and I'm just enjoying my training in general so I can't wait now for September 15th."
Macklin's promoter Lou DiBella believes it's an opportunity for the 30-year-old to put himself back in the mix for another World title fight. "Macklin put his name into the world boxing scene with great back-to-back performances against Felix Sturm and Sergio Martinez," said DiBella. "While he came up a little short in those world title opportunities, he is hungrier than ever and looking to move himself back into the title picture. In his way stands Joachim Alcine, who is a former world champion and coming off the huge upset victory over David Lemieux. This is a do-or-die fight for both of these guys and they are going to leave it all on the line come fight night."
Macklin's manager Brian Peters echoed DiBella's thoughts. "It's a big opportunity for Matthew to shine and put himself right back in contention for another World title fight" said Peters. "In back to back fights he has proved he is right up there with the Worlds best and last time out he pushed a man recognised as the best fighter in the sport outside of Mayweather or Pacquio very close. Matthew's hunger to become World Champion is stronger than ever and I'm expecting another big performance from him next month."
Macklin admits that one downside of his Las Vegas debut is that he has had to sacrifice his normal summer routine of regular trips back to Ireland to watch his beloved Tipperary hurling team.
"Tipperary are playing Kilkenny in the All-Ireland semi final at the weekend and it's a massive, massive game but I'm going to have to watch it from Spain. I'd love to be heading back for it but I can't really break training camp so close to my fight. I'm confident that the Tipp lads can pull it off as I think they have an extra few gears from what they have had to show so far in the Championship this year. Obviously Kilkenny look to be back with a vengeance after that defeat to Galway earlier but I'm quietly confident Tipp can progress to the final. The only problem with that is I'll have to miss the final as well as it will be the week before the Las Vegas fight! I'd be gutted to miss the final as well but I'm expecting a few of the lads to celebrate winning another All-Ireland by coming out to my fight in Vegas the following weekend so hopefully we can have a double celebration!"
