GIOVANNI LORENZO - RAUL MARQUEZ, IBF Middleweight Mandatory Eliminator Hard Rock Live in Hollywood FL, SHOWTIME TO BROADCAST LIVE

GIOVANNI LORENZO

MIDDLEWEIGHT MELEE: The Hard Rock Live in Hollywood, FL will serve as the site for a Showtime World Championship Boxing middleweight doubleheader. The 12 round non-title main event bout will feature a rematch between Edison Miranda (30-2, 26 KO’s) and undefeated IBF middleweight champion Arthur Abraham (26-0, 21 KO’s). In the co-feature undefeated IBF #4 ranked contender Giovanni Lorenzo (26-0, 18 KO’s) challenges IBF #13 ranked contender and former world champion Raul Marquez (40-3-1, 29 KO’s) in a 12 round IBF Mandatory Eliminator bout. IBF champion Abraham is mandated to fight the winner of Lorenzo-Marquez in his next bout. SHOWTIME’s June 21broadcast will begin at 9pm ET / PT. Tickets, priced at $202, $152, $102, and $52 are now on sale and may be purchased at the Hard Rock Live Box Office or TicketMaster.com.

GIOVANNI LORENZO: TIME TO STEP UP - Undefeated middleweight contender Giovanni Lorenzo has been waiting for this opportunity. He has hungered for the chance to showcase his talents and prove to the world that he is ready to battle for a world title. The only person standing in his way is Raul Marquez:

On Marquez’s abilities: “Marquez has many strengths, as do most former world champions. He is durable, he’s been active, and he can punch. He has been in with the best in the world. Also, he is a southpaw and I have never faced a southpaw before. He works every minute of every round and bangs to the body hard. He's tenacious, focused, but also very relaxed. He is a tough out for anyone. That is why so many fighters have avoided him. But so far no one has been able to defeat me. He has been defeated and he knows how to lose. That will be the big difference in the fight.”

On Marquez’s age and stamina: “Marquez has been the distance [10 rounds or more] numerous times and the most I have gone is 8 rounds, so I don’t expect any advantages if the fight going longer. I have been preparing for the old Marquez and I expect a hard physical fight from start to finish. I know that although he has been stopped he has never been counted out, so I want to be the first man to ever do that. If I can, it will be a huge accomplishment.”

On Pavlik-Lockett: “I think Pavlik could get beat. He is an overrated fighter
who wants to fight bums who nobody gives a damn about. But if HBO
wants to keep paying him the amount of money he is asking to fight these
bums, then they deserve the poor ratings that they have been getting.
Pavlik is never going to fight me. His management already confirmed this
. . . which is why we are moving on and planning to face Abraham in our
next fight.”

RAUL MARQUEZ: FINAL SHOT? Former world champion Raul Marquez recognizes that this IBF eliminator bout on June 21 against Lorenzo may be his final opportunity to earn a world title shot. Since losing to Jermain Taylor in June 2004, the 16-year veteran and 1992 Silver Medalist has rattled off a 5-0-1 record. With the help of his trainer/father, Arturo Marquez, Raul plans to knock off Lorenzo and then challenge IBF champion Arthur Abraham . . . or any other world middleweight champion willing to fight him.

On Lorenzo’s opposition: “Lorenzo’s young and hungry and this is a big opportunity for him. But the guy’s never been tested. The biggest name on his resume is Archak [Ter-Meliksetian]. He’s been fighting nothing but journeymen.”

On Lorenzo’s skills: “He’s powerful and strong. When you knock out 18 guys you have some power no matter who the opponent is. But I don’t think he is a full-blown middleweight and a lot of the guys he’s fought were welterweights and jr. middleweights. He hasn’t been in with a true middleweight. I’ve watched tape of him and I think he’s an average guy, an average fighter. Nothing impressive. I don’t compare him with the talent of guys like Jermain Taylor and Fernando Vargas when I fought them. They had better resumes.”

Marquez is training for the bout in Houston, and other than suffering through the heat and the humidity he is enjoying training like never before: “Since I lost to Taylor I’ve had six fights. The training is hard and you really have to want it. It’s hard at any age, but it gets even harder at 36. But I’m different now. I’m older, wiser, and more mature. I love boxing more now than ever. I appreciate it more. I train happy.”

Heavy Weight Contender Juan Carlos Gomez
Undefeated Heavyweight prospect Bowie Tupou

The "Blast From the Past" segment will feature JAMES JEFFRIES:

James Jackson Jeffries (Jim) was a great fighter at the turn of the century, when boxing styles and techniques were a bit cruder than today but fighters were more rugged and possessed greater spunk and stamina.

He was a big, strong heavyweight who struck sledge-hammer blows with each fist, similar to Rocky Marciano and George Foreman of more recent years. Jeffries often fought from a crouch and sprang forward with dangerous punches.

Fighting in a time when hard work and manual labor was at its peak, Jeffries was always in magnificent physical condition. He was rugged beyond belief, possessed a granite chin, and absorbed punishment without blinking. In addition, he was a patient fighter who seemed to possess unlimited endurance.

Jeffries won the Heavyweight Championship in only his thirteenth fight
He scored the quickest knockout in Heavyweight Championship history - 55 seconds
He was never defeated during his prime
He was never knocked down during his prime
He offered to fight his top challengers - Bob Fitzsimmons, Jim Corbett, and Tom Sharkey - all on the same night. They refused.

DAVID DIAZ THROWS OUT FIRST PITCH AT CHICAGO CUBS GAME THIS TUESDAY NIGHT‏

CHICAGO, IL- The Chicago Cubs, owners of the best record in Major League Baseball, will welcome World Boxing Council Lightweight Champion David Diaz to throw out the pitch this Tuesday night, June 10th, prior to the opening game of their three game home series against the Atlanta Braves. Diaz will take to the mound approximately 15 minutes prior to the 7:05pm local start.

Said Diaz, "This truly is an honor. Being Chicago born and raised on the North Side, the Cubs became my favorite team as a young boy. I've loved going to Cubs games since I was a kid. When they called I was thrilled to have them invite me and I'm very excited to the head to mound on Tuesday night to throw out the first pitch."

Continued Diaz, "The team has been very supportive of my career and I'm anxious to share my best wishes with them for the rest of this season."

Diaz is currently training in Chicago for his world title defense against THE MEXICUTIONER set for Saturday, June 28th at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada

Diaz regularly updates his blog with the Chicago Sun-Times with more information on the fight and his training. The blog can be viewed at www.sun-times/com/sports/boxing.

Additional information can also be viewed at his website www.diazboxing.com and at www.toprank.com

Promoted by Top Rank, in association with MP Promotions, Pacquiao vs. Diaz will take place Saturday, June 28th, at Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino, Las Vegas, Nevada. The 12-round lightweight championship bout will be produced and distributed live by HBO Pay-Per-View, beginning at 9 P.M. ET /6 P.M. PT.

Remaining tickets for Pacquiao vs.Diaz, priced at $600, $400, $300, $200 and $100, can be purchased at the Mandalay Bay box office and at all Las Vegas Ticketmaster locations (select Smith’s Food and Drug Centers, Macy’s West at the Fashion Show Mall, and Ritmo Latino). Ticket sales are limited to eight (8) per person. To charge by phone with a major credit card, call Ticketmaster at (702) 474-4000 or Mandalay Bay (702) 632-7580. Tickets are also available for purchase at www.mandalaybay.com or www.ticketmaster.com

“This will be my hardest-fought battle,” said Pacquiao. “It’s been over three years since I have changed weight divisions and I will be doing it against the lightweight division’s world champion. I saw how he took the fight to Erik Morales in his last title defense and I’m expecting to see the same firepower out of him when we meet. But this is my drive for five. Five world titles in five different weight classes and I will not be denied. I am fighting for history, for destiny and for my people of the Philippines.”

"Manny Pacquiao has beaten many great fighters, especially Mexicans like Morales, Barrera, Marquez, Larios and Solis. That's why they call him “The Mexicutioner,” said Diaz. “I will shock the world and beat Pacquiao at his own game, power for power. He’s a great champion but he’s fighting in my division – lightweight. I have worked too hard for this world title and I will not give it up to him."

“Two world champions, at the top of their game, matching each other in speed, power, stamina and courage is a recipe for a great fight,” said Hall of Fame promoter Bob Arum. “Manny has never felt the power thrown at this weight class just as Diaz has never gone toe-to-toe with such a human dynamo. But Manny possesses an inner strength from his fellow countrymen the likes I have never seen as a promoter with over 40 years of experience. Manny is more than a national treasure to the Philippines, he is the very symbol of its national pride. He doesn’t fight for himself, he fights for his people. It’s a responsibility that no other athlete could, or attempt to, accomplish.”

“Boxing fans recognize that in Pacquiao vs. Diaz you have one of the sport’s best fighters and biggest attractions moving up in weight to challenge a bigger, stronger champion,” said HBOPPV’s Mark Taffet. “It’s a very intriguing proposition and we look forward to the event."

Dubbed "Republica Enemy No. 1," Pacquiao (46-3-2, 34 KOs), from General Santos City, Philippines, has blitzed through the best fighters Mexico has had to offer since 2003 including Erik Morales (KO 3, TKO 10), Marco Antonio Barrera (TKO 11, W 12), Juan Manuel Marquez (W 12, D 12), Oscar Larios (W 12), Emanuel Lucero (TKO 3), Hector Velazquez (TKO 6) and Jorge Solis (KO 8). Pacquiao was named 2006 Fighter of the Year by the Boxing Writers Association of America and The Ring magazine for his two spectacular knockout victories of Mexican icon and three-division champion Morales, as well as his dominating 12-round unanimous decision over former world champion Larios. The hard-hitting southpaw has won 22 of his last 23 bouts including 2007 victories over Barrera and Solis. Pacquiao’s 12-round split decision victory over Marquez earlier this year not only avenged a disputed draw from their 2004 battle, it also made Pacman a four-division world champion.

Diaz (34-1-1, 17 KOs), from Chicago, will be making the second defense of his title. He successfully defended it against the three-division world champion Morales last summer winning a hard-fought unanimous decision over the future Hall of Famer. Although behind on the scorecards early, Diaz remained cool and rallied before the raucous hometown Chicago crowd of 10,000 to capture the decision. He swept the championship rounds and won the decision by scores of 114-113, 115-113 and 115-112. With the victory, Diaz cemented his place among the best lightweights in the sport and one of the most popular and respected athletes in the sports-crazy town of Chicago. A member of the 1996 U.S. Olympic team, Diaz, with 12 years of experience as a professional, is more than prepared to handle the pressures that come with battling boxing’s pound-for-pound most exciting fighter.

The Pacquiao vs. Diaz pay-per-view telecast beginning at 9 p.m. ET / 6 p.m. PT, has a suggested retail price of $49.95, will be produced and distributed by HBO Pay-Per-View and will be available to 71 million pay-per-view homes. The telecast will be available in HD-TV for those viewers who can receive HD. HBO Pay-Per-View is the leading supplier of event programming to the pay-per-view industry. Hunky Dorys Fight Night July 12

Irish title double bill added to Hunky Dorys Fight Night

Two mouth watering Irish title fights have been added to the next Hunky Dorys Fight Night, which will be headlined by Bernard Dunne at the National Stadium, Dublin on July 12th.

The “Pink Panther” Jim Rock will return to the ring as he attempts to become an unprecedented 4 weight Irish Champion by stepping up to Light Heavyweight to tackle Jonjo Finnegan.

A second Irish title fight on the card will see two reigning Irish champs clash when Light Welterweight kingpin Andrew Murray moves down a weight to challenge Peter McDonagh for his Lightweight belt.

Rock sees his clash with Finnegan as an opportunity to cement his place in Irish boxing history in what he admits will probably be his last ever appearance in the ring.

“I’ve made history by becoming the first Irish professional to win Irish titles at 3 different weights but I’d like to make that 4 because I think that would give me a bit of extra breathing space in terms of safeguarding that record.

“I know I’ve threatened retirement before but I think this fight will be it for me,” admitted the Dubliner who recently turned 36. “If I’m realistic I probably shouldn’t be fighting and my wife would certainly agree with that but there’s no other buzz quite like it. No matter what you achieve in business or in anything else you can never match the feeling of getting into that ring in front of a couple of thousand people. It’s the ultimate gladiatorial sport and that adrenalin rush is very hard to leave behind.

“What happens with me is that when I haven’t fought in a while I tend to put on a few pounds and then when I go back to the gym to get back into shape it always ends up with me climbing back into the ring just to spar a few rounds. That’s when I get the buzz back and you can’t beat the camaraderie and craic you get up in John Breen’s gym in Belfast.

“It’s buzzing there at the moment, Neil Sinclair has an EU title fight in Italy at the weekend, Martin Rogan is flying high after winning the prize fighter and will be fighting Audley Harrison next month in the U.K. and Paul McCloskey and Stephen Haughian are in great form as well so when you’re in the middle of those guys it really gets you motivated.”

Rock will need to be motivated if Finnegan is to be believed. Based in Burton-on-Trent the 28 year old’s roots are in Gort, Co. Galway and he’s desperate for Irish title success after rebounding from career threatening injuries last year.

“This fight has been talked about quite a few times in recent years and for one reason or another it’s never come off but finally it’s happening now and I can’t wait,” said Finnegan.

“I was in a bad car accident last year and the doctors told me I’d never box again but I was determined to get back in there and that experience has taught me that you have to make the most of any opportunities that come your way and grab them with both hands.
“I’ve a lot of respect for Jim, he’s been around the block and I know that I will have my work cut out but I’ll be in the shape of my life and I’ll be ready to take that Irish title.”

Rock admits to knowing little about Finnegan but realises that he is a major threat. “I know he’ll really be up for this, he’s been very active recently and he’s a warm up fight lined up as well so he’ll be ring fit where as I’ll have a bit of ring rust to shed after over a year out but I really want that fourth Irish title belt.”

The build up to the second Irish title decider on the card promises to be a distinctly frostier affair with a war of words already underway between the rival camps of Peter McDonagh and Andrew Murray.

McDonagh will be defending the Irish title he won in controversial fashion against Michael Gomez in 2006 while the undefeated Murray will be attempting to add the Lightweight belt to the Light Weterweight belt he already holds.

Both men have sparred countless rounds with each other in the past and both camps hold vastly differing views on the outcome of those sessions.

McDonagh’s manager Mark Roe said, “I wasn’t involved with Peter back then but I had heard at the time and Peter confirmed to me afterwards that he broke Murray’s jaw in two places during one of their spars. I don’t think it was anything malicious on Peter’s behalf, it was just one of those injuries that happens in sparring but it’s something to consider for those people that say Peter’s not a puncher.

“Peter’s a professional and he’s nothing against Andrew because he’s a nice kid but this is a big chance for Peter to impress and he’s working very hard in the gym for it. Sparring is sparring but all that goes out the window in a real fight but when you look at the experience Peter has against Andrew you can draw your own conclusions.”

Murray’s manager Mickey Helliet is bullish about his man’s chances. “Actions speak louder than words and we’ve wanted this fight for the last 18 months while we’ve only had silence from McDonagh during that time. In fact I think that’s a big psychological advantage to Andrew and means he’s won the first round.

“I truly believe that this is a foregone conclusion for Andrew as long as Peter actually turns up. I won’t believe it’s happening until the ring has cleared and the two guys are left standing there with the first bell about to go - even then I’ll have to pinch myself.

“Peter has pulled out of fights before, he was supposed to fight Oisin Fagan in Dublin and he pulled out of that and because of Andrew he nearly pulled out of the Gomez fight. Andrew’s trainer Paul Rees told me after one of their sparring sessions for that fight Andrew was so dominant that McDonagh was considering not going ahead with the Gomez fight. I know they had some pretty heated sparring sessions but I know Andrew always got the better of them.

Also featured on the undercard is the return of exciting Belfast puncher, Darren Corbett, Dublin’s Ian Tims, Castlebar native Keith Cresham and other bouts. Tickets for the Hunky Dorys Fight Night priced from €50 are on sale from Ticketmaster.ie and all usual outlets.

Duddy returns June 28th in Boston;‏ Headlining “Hassle In The Castle"

NEW YORK– Undefeated world middleweight contender “Ireland’s” John Duddy returns to the ring June 28 with a new head trainer in his corner, Pat Burns, in the 10-round main event against Charles Howe, headlining “Hassle In The Castle” at The Castle in Boston.

Duddy (24-0, 17 KOs), a native of County Derry in N. Ireland, lives and fights out of Queens, New York. He is rated No. 2 by the WBC and No. 3 by the WBO, as well as No. 5 by the WBA and No. 10 by the IBF. Burns trained Jermain Taylor to the world middleweight title. Howe (17-4-2, 9 KOs), fighting out of Ohio, is coming off of the only loss in his last 14 fights, dating back nearly eight years, to WBC USNBC champion Joey Gilbert in their title fight last September.

“We’re returning to Boston out of appreciation to all of his fans there,” Irish Ropes Promotions president Eddie McLoughlin said. “John has a lot of friends in Boston and he sold out The Castle 2 ½ years ago when he beat Julio Jean. There are a lot of Irish and Irish-Americans living there and we’ve received countless requests to return. On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman begins by commenting on the recent exposure of what goes on behind the scenes of UFC's "The Ultimate Fighter" show by cast member and fighter Mike Dolce. Here, once again, the true, anti-social nature of that show is laid bare.

Next, we review the entertaining Gotham Girls Roller Derby bout held this past Saturday, June 7, at Hunter College in New York, where the Bronx Gridlock routed the Brooklyn Bombshells, 126-53. Right after the event, we spoke with Bronx Gridlock members Ginger Snap, who is also president of the Gotham Girls Roller Derby, and Beatrix Slaughter, the Gridlock jammer who was named this event's MVP.

This week, from Friday, June 13, through Sunday, June 15, the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Trials in men's and women's freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling take place at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas, Nevada. The victors in each weight class go on to compete at the 2008 Summer Olympic Games in Beijing, China, this August.

We had a chance this past week on a media teleconference call to speak with three of the top-rated wrestlers competing at this event: men's freestyle wrestler Mo Lawal (84 kg/185 lbs.), women's freestyle wrestler Marcie Van Dusen (55 kg/121 lbs.), and Greco-Roman wrestler T.C. Dantzler (74 kg/163 lbs.).

The show is in MP3 format, so may take some time to download.
