A Message from Tyler Perry
Thank you all for making WHY DID I GET MARRIED? the number one DVD this week as well as buying WHAT'S DONE IN THE DARK.
It's so good to know that I can count on you. (smile) Thank you, again! I want to say a quick congratulations to Lavan Davis, Lance Gross, HOUSE OF PAYNE and Janet Jackson. They all won Image Awards. I am so happy for them, especially Lavan. I'm telling you, nobody would give this man a shot. Now look! I'm just blown away. Another reason that I'm writing is this.
When we won the Image Award for HOUSE OF PAYNE, I said something that I didn't know I had said until I watched the show played back that night. I said that if 1000 people tell you no and you get one yes from God then that's all you need to make it. That thing woke up something in me. I realized at that moment that I had had a lot of NO's in my life. I had a lot of people say, "You can't!" and "You never will!" I had a lot of doubters and hardly anybody ever said that I could. And through the hardest times in my life I had to learn how to encourage myself.
And I want to tell you that if nobody else will encourage you then encourage yourself. If you have a dream, keep working towards it. It's great to have people give you awards and appreciate what you do, but back in the day, it wasn't that way at all. I remember when I was broke and working a dead end job clearing about 300 dollars a week. This wasn't long ago at all, as a matter of fact. What I would do though was on my lunch break I would spend the time writing down play ideas, writing down movie ideas, planning a tour for my play, looking at maps of the country, calling theaters. I knew that I had ideas that would move people--that would help them in one way or another, so I just kept going. I didn't have a dime to my name. I didn't know how I was going to get there, but I knew that I would in some way. And then God made a way. And look, when I would really get down I used to go out to the nicest neighborhoods and go to open houses and just look at them and believe. I would put on my nicest closes and go out and test drive the finest cars. Now I know that these are material things but this is about an exercise in faith. In order to get to your dreams you have to see yourself there. You have to see yourself doing better. Use your mind to see yourself doing better. The Bible says, "As a man thinketh, so is he." Stir up the gift in you. People are waiting for your dream to come to pass. Don't give up. I often think about all the times I wanted to give up. I thought about how hard it was and how much I was going through. I look at my life now and I say to myself, "Boy I'm glad you kept going!" What if I would have stopped, can you imagine? No plays, no movies, no Madea, not even this email. Again, God has given us all gifts and if you give up on your dreams then the world will never know. We're waiting for you! tremendous difference in their lives and community.
Black Wallstreet was physically destroyed by jealous whites, the
message here; however, is not about anger or revenge--It is a simple
plea to recapture that thriving community's pride and spirit.
Moreover, we hope that this example encourages you to replicate its
cultural and economic success.
The highlighted (blue) passages focus attention on the success of our

mind as you think about the opportunity that the Block IV Corporation

Black Wallstreet
The date was June 1, 1921, when "Black Wallstreet," the name
fittingly given to one of the most affluent all-Black communities in
America, (This was not the only thrinving black community.) was
bombed from the air and burned to the ground by mobs of envious
whites. In a period spanning fewer than 12 hours, a once thriving 36-
Block business district in northern Tulsa lay smoldering--A model
community destroyed, and a major African-American economic movement
resoundingly defused.
The nights carnage left some 3,000 African Americans dead, and over
600 successful businesses lost. Among these were 21 churches, 21
restaurants, 30 grocery stores and two movie theaters, plus a
hospital, a bank, a post office, libraries, schools, law offices, a
half dozen private airplanes and even a bus system. As could have
been expected the impetus behind it all was the infamous Ku Klux
Klan, working in consort with ranking city officials, and many other
sympathizers.
In their self-published book, Black Wallstreet: A Lost Dream, and its
companion video documentary, Black Wallstreet: A Black Holocaust in
America!, the authors have chronicled for the very first time in the
words of area historians and elderly survivors what really happened
there on that fateful summer day in 1921 and why it happened. Wallace
similarly explained to BE why this bloody event from the turn of the
century seems to have had a recurring effect that is being felt in
predominately Black neighborhoods even to this day.
The best description of Black Wallstreet, or Little Africa as it was
also known, would be liken it to a mini-Beverly Hills. It was the
golden door of the Black community during the early 1900s, and it
proved that African Americans had successful infrastructure. That's
what Black Wallstreet was all about.
The dollar circulated 36 to 100 times, sometimes taking a year for
currency to leave the community. Now in 1995, a dollar leaves the
Black community in 15-minutes. (Black economic success depends on us
spending our money with us.) As far as resources, there were Ph.D.'s
residing in Little Africa, Black attorneys and doctors. One doctor
was Dr. Berry who owned the bus system. His average income was $500 a
day, a hefty pocket change in 1910. (We provided for ourselves the
same services that we currenly rely on others to provide.)
During that era, physicians owned medical schools. There were also
pawn shops everywhere, brothels, jewelry stores, 21 churches, 21
restaurants and two movie theaters. It was a time when the entire
state of Oklahoma has only two airports, yet six Blacks owned their
own planes. It was a very fascinating community.
The area encompassed over 600 businesses and 36 square blocks with a
population of 15,000 African Americans. And when the lower-economic
Europeans looked over and saw what the Black community created, many
of them were jealous. When the average student went to school on
Black Wallstreet, he wore a suit and tie because of the morals and
respect they were taught at a young age.
The mainstay of the community was to educate every child. Nepotism
was the one word they believed in. And that's what we need to get
back to in 1995. The main thoroughfare was Greenwood Avenue, and it
was intersected by Archer and Pine Streets. From the first letters in
each of those three names, you get G.A.P., and that's where the
renowned R and B music group The Gap Band got its name. They're from
Tulsa.
Black Wallstreet was a prime example of the typical. Black community
in America that did businesses, but it was in an unusual location.
You see, at the time, Oklahoma was set aside to be a Black and Indian
state. There were over 28 Black townships there. One third of the
people who traveled in the terrifying "Trail of Tears" along side the
Indians between 1830 to 1842 were Black people.
The citizens of this proposed Indian and Black state chose a Black
governor, a treasurer from Kansas named McDade. But the Ku Klux Klan
said that if he assumed office that they would kill him within 48
hours. A lot of Blacks owned farmland, and many of them had gone into
the oil business. The community was so tight and wealthy because they
traded dollars hand-to-hand, and because they were dependent upon one
another as a result of the Jim Crow laws.
It was not unusual that if a resident's home accidentally burned
down, it could be rebuilt within a few weeks by neighbors. This was
the type of scenario that was going on day- to-day on Black
Wallstreet. When Blacks intermarried into the Indian culture, some of
them received their promised '40 Acres and A Mule' and with that came
whatever oil was later found on the properties.
Just to show you how wealthy a lot of Black people were, there was a
banker in the neighboring town who had a wife named California
Taylor. Her father owned the largest cotton gin west of the
Mississippi [River]. When California shopped, she would take a cruise
to Paris every three months to have her clothes made.
There was also a man named Mason in nearby Wagner County who had the
largest potato farm west of the Mississippi. When he harvested, he
would fill 100 boxcars a day. Another brother not far away had the
same thing with a spinach farm. The typical family then was five
children or more, though the typical farm family would have 10 kids
or more who made up the nucleus of the labor.
On Black Wallstreet, a lot of global business was conducted. The
community flourished from the early 1900s until June 1, 1921. That's
when the largest massacre of non-military Americans in the history of
this country took place, and it was lead by the Ku Klux Klan. Imagine
walking out of your front door and seeing 1,500 homes being burned.
It must have been amazing.
Survivors we interviewed think that the whole thing was planned
because during the time that all of this was going on, white families
with their children stood around the borders of their community and
watched the massacre, the looting and everything--much in the same
manner they would watch a lynching.
In my lectures I ask people if they understand where the word
"picnic" comes from. It was typical to have a picnic on a Friday
evening in Oklahoma. The word was short for "pick a nigger" to lynch.
They would lynch a Black male and cut off body parts as souvenirs.
This went on every weekend in this country, and it was all across the
county. That's where the term really came from.
The riots weren't caused by anything Black or white. It was caused by
jealousy. A lot of white folks had come back from World War I and
they were poor. When they looked over into the Black communities and
realized that Black men who fought in the war had come home heroes
that helped trigger the destruction.
In 1910, our forefathers and mothers owned 13 million acres of land
at the height of racism in this country, so the Black Wallstreet book
and videotape prove to the naysayers and revisionists that we had our
act together. Our mandate now is to begin to teach our children about
out own, ongoing Black holocaust. They have to know when they look at
our communities today that we don't come from this.

Wilson dealt Walker his lone defeat on Oct. 19, 2007, on ShoBox when he scored a controversial, dramatic 15-second, first-round knockout. Moments after the opening bell, Wilson backed Walker into a corner and began delivering punches with both hands. At least a couple connected solidly and seemed to stun Walker, who did not attempt to retaliate, or even raise a glove. He didn’t land a punch.
Seconds later, the referee waved off the fight.

It would appear on the surface that Houston super lightweight Daniel Garcia will be a huge underdog when takes on Puerto Rico’s Jesus Pabon (11-1, 8 KOs) at the Paragon Casino and Resort in Marksville, Louisiana, and live on ESPN2 this Friday, February 29.
But Garcia (9-4-1, 7 KOs) has a motivational speaker for a manager and doesn’t see the situation that way. “This is a step up for him just as much as for me,” he explains. “He hasn’t really been fighting top opposition until two fights ago. And then he fought somebody undefeated and lost. I‘ve been fighting guys that are there to fight, but don’t have the skill that this guy has. It’s going to be good for both of us to see where we are with our careers.”
In fact, 29-year-old Garcia sees himself as a good match for Pabon in every way. “I know he was an amateur star out of Puerto Rico, but I had 256 amateur fights. I’ve been fighting since I was seven. He’s a typical Puerto Rican fighter, quick on his feet and a good boxer/puncher. I’m a boxer/puncher as well.”
Of his early start in the sport, Garcia says while he was growing up, boxing was mandatory. “In my family you start fighting when you are seven. You box until you’re 18. Then you can quit or keep going.”

MENTAL TOUGHNESS……THE MISSING FACTOR TO GREATNESS; BY KERRY DAIGLE
Maw Maw Daigle always told me, “The people that become great in their fields are not the better educated, the better connected, or the person with the better looks, but rather it will be the person who has the ‘mental toughness’ to desire success no matter what the odds.” To think, Maw Maw Daigle always had the vision to teach me, her mentee, all the secrets to success.
I had the pleasure of working a professional fight Saturday, the 23rd, with one of the boxers I represent, Reggie “Sweet’ Johnson , the former WBA Middleweight Champion of the World and the former IBF Light-Heavyweight Champion of the World, to watch him win his third world title, the IBA World Light Heavyweight Championship. Why am I mentioning this? Simply because Reggie hadn’t fought in years, was 41 years old and competing against one of the toughest competitors in the game of professional boxing, Julio Gonzalez from Huntington Beach, California.
A younger Gonzalez who also was very busy staying sharp fighting regularly. Johnson was not looked at seriously by the media. He was almost ignored. Clearly the odds were against him. I didn’t meet anyone except my trainers, my family, Reggie, and myself who clearly believed that Reggie could win. The other surprised individual was Julio Gonzalez who looked not only perplexed and confused but mostly surprised by the excellent fighting style Reggie Johnson brought to the ring. Gonzalez felt the power from his opponent and was totally not expecting what was happening. What made the difference for Johnson to win? Simply, one simple ingredient, MENTAL TOUGHNESS. (

In my 35 years of professional boxing I’ve seen some really great fighters; however, I have never seen the ‘mental toughness’ that Reggie Johnson showed leading into this title fight. Forget he hadn’t fought but once in 5 years. Boxing experts said he was too old, not busy enough, and definitely at this age could not hold off the younger, stronger Gonzalez. What the boxing experts could not see in Johnson’s eyes was his will to win, the mental toughness it takes to become a legend in boxing. Now the rest of the boxing world needs to take notice.
One of my favorite people who I often admired and consider a mentor through his books and articles written about him was Vince Lombardi. “Mental Toughness” was often his favorite topic that developed not only champions but also leaders. Mental toughness is the ability to maintain your vision in times of distress and negativity. It is the element missing to keep teams together and athletes winning against all odds. (Think of the New York Giants recently). It is the one ingredient that allows that team or athlete to outdo the competition and perform miracles to win. It is the ability to come back from failing and consider those days of failure as lessons in life to prepare you for success. This also describes the journey of an entrepreneur or professional seeking lifelong success in their field. In the story of the athlete such as Reggie it is the ability to fight a long hard 12 rounds after tearing a muscle in his right shoulder in the 5th round but yet to compete and still win against a dangerous, tough opponent. It is the individual who loses a sale and gets told “no” many times to her sales presentation but prevails regardless. It’s all the same. It is about mental toughness. No negativity can break the mind of the individual who believes in his or her self and then prepares to win.
Lombardi would always mention to his players, “Hurt is in the mind only.” That shoulder injury Reggie Johnson had in the early rounds (the 5th) of the fight could have made him quit but instead he decided that he could compete regardless. It is the person who goes bankrupt but realizes that although his or her finances were taken away that they still owned their skills, therefore, giving them the mental toughness to compete and succeed again. There are so many stories of many successes like this from Walt Disney to Abraham Lincoln to George Foreman and now to Reggie Johnson.
You are not born with mental toughness. It is not inherited. You can’t take a pill and get tough mentally. You learn how to become mentally tough. All successful people are those who set their sights high, gain their goals, move forward, and then fall down due to occasional setbacks. The setbacks make the difference. Once you are lucky enough to have ‘setbacks’ you will learn from them and become mentally tough. It is mark of character.

Developing mental toughness the Lombardi or Johnson way is by first keeping the pressure on and never looking back or giving up. It is so easy to do well when there are no problems or stress, however, how many people ‘fold over’ when defeat is biting you in the seat of your pants? It is about being calm and figuring out how something will work vs how something will not work. Reggie Johnson knew, regardless of the shoulder injury, he needed to stare adversity, negativity, and defeat in the face. Only then could he become a winner.
My hat goes off to Reggie Johnson and others who stare at adversity in the face every day and never, ever, give up ……..no matter what.
Remember, obstacles are nothing more than ‘opportunities’ in disguise. Be thankful when you come across an obstacle in your life. It will test your ‘mental toughness’, the make-up of champions and successful leaders.

The cruiserweight battle begins LIVE at 9 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the west coast) when SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING offers a cruiserweight world title unification bout between British brawlers Enzo Maccarinelli and David “Hayemaker” Haye from the O2 Arena in London.
Maccarinelli, of Swansea, Wales, is the World Boxing Organization (WBO) champion while Haye, a native Londoner, is the World Boxing Council (WBC) and World Boxing Association (WBA) titleholder.
Maccarinelli will be making his fourth title defense. Haye will be fighting for the first time since he climbed off the canvas to capture the WBC and WBA belts with a seventh-round TKO over defending champion Jean-Mark Mormeck.

February 29's "Friday Night Fights" broadcast from the Paragon Casino Resort in Marksville, Louisiana, featuring IBF #1-rated Sechew "Iron Horse" Powell (23-1, 13 KOs) and IBF and WBO #14-rated Allan "Sweetness" Green (26-1, 18 KOs) in dual main events, will mark the culmination of a lengthy group effort to bring world-class professional boxing to Central Louisiana.

Known as the "Pearl of Louisiana", the Paragon was constructed on Tunica-Biloxi Tribe land in 1994 and has quickly expanded to a sprawling 1,000,000 + square-foot resort that rivals anything Las Vegas can offer. With cypress trees and live alligators in its newly constructed eight-story glass atrium, over 2000 slot machines, the full complement of gaming tables, three hotel towers, a top-rated golf course and seven restaurants among its many amenities, the Paragon has turned a once-rural area into one of the country's newest hot spots.
So what does a casino traditionally do once it's all dressed up? It goes out for a night of world-class boxing.
David Rivas, Director of Political Affairs for the Tunica-Biloxi Tribe as well as the first independent Native American boxing promoter in history, says that while the Paragon has hosted boxing in the past, this amazing coup to stage a major event started with a call to Louisiana-based husband-and-wife boxing promoters Mickey and Kerry Daigle of Keeppunching Entertainment.
"Kerry is a dear friend of mine. When they asked me who I thought could handle the boxing program for the Paragon, I recommended Keeppunching immediately. Mickey and Kerry are honorable people."
The Daigles began their Paragon tenure by putting on well-attended shows featuring local favorites such as Blake "Candyman" Prevost and "The Fighting Marine" Kasha Chamblin.
Then one day came word that a televised date, originally to be hosted by "The Contender" series of promotions, was suddenly available. Through some quick moves, Keeppunching was able to put together this sensational card and make the fight happen at the Paragon.
Kerry Daigle, KPE Director of Boxing to his wife Mickey's role as promoter, says it took some fast maneuvering.
"When I heard that The Contender had other plans, I spent hours on the phone coming up with an idea for a blockbuster show. When I had a plan put together, I called up my good friend Leon Margules (Head of Florida-based Warrior's Boxing) and together with Allan Green's promoter Tony Holden, we approached ESPN and finalized arrangements for this incredible double-main-event evening, one of the best nights of boxing that will be seen on ESPN this year."
Bordelon calls the big show a "coming out party," for the Paragon and for Louisiana boxing. "We're looking forward to having folks around the country find out about our outstanding facilities. In the Mari Center (Mari means "gathering" in the Tunica Biloxi Tribal language) there are only 2200 seats, so when you sit in this newly updated facility, it's like being at a very intimate gathering, but with all the modern technology and features that a much larger facility would have: great lighting and wonderful sound. The exposure through ESPN is wonderful for us. This will encourage people who have never visited Marksville to come and enjoy everything you could want from a top casino resort and the best southern hospitality on the planet to go with it."
When the bright lights go up and the cameras roll that February Friday night, one of the big winners will be the group who were able to collectively put it all together. While Las Vegas is known as the world's champion of top-level boxing, a hungry, young contender has emerged in Marksville, Louisiana.
And they're working hard on taking Vegas's title away some day.

On this edition of NO HOLDS BARRED, host Eddie Goldman starts a mostly mixed martial arts show by reporting the news announced Tuesday about the fight card for the debut show for the new YAMMA Pit Fighting mixed martial arts organization (http://yammapitfighting.com/). That event takes place Friday, April 11, at the Trump Taj Mahal in Atlantic City, New Jersey, and will be shown live on pay-per-view television.
The Boris Talis Cup Jiu Jitsu Team Competition was held February 21 at the historic Atlantic Oceana in Brighton Beach, Brooklyn, New York. In that grappling event, the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Team Garcia, coached by Justin Garcia of the Jungle Gym in the Bronx, New York (http://www.junglegymbronx.com/), defeated the Russian Sambo Team Taktarov, coached by former UFC champion Oleg Taktarov.
We spoke about the event right after it with both Justin Garcia and Oleg Taktarov. Besides discussing this event, we also spoke with Oleg about his movie career and his upcoming fight with Don Frye at the April 11 debut show of YAMMA Pit Fighting.
We spoke with IFL middleweight champion Matt Horwich, who defends his title this coming Friday, February 29, at the Orleans Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. His opponent will be former Iowa Hawkeye wrestler Ryan McGivern, who defeated Horwich when they first met in December 2006 by unanimous decision. This event will be telecast on HDNet.
Richard Schaefer, the CEO of Golden Boy Promotions, was in New York last week to announce the April 19 fight between two champions, light heavyweight king Bernard Hopkins and super middleweight champion Joe Calzaghe. We spoke with him about this fight, and also about the plans of Golden Boy Promotions to enter the worlds of soccer (football) and mixed martial arts.
