No Holds Barred: Kid Peligro Previews 2009 Mundials and ADCC Submission Wrestling World Championship

No Holds Barred: Kid Peligro Previews 2009 Mundials and ADCC Submission Wrestling World Championship

http://nhbnews.podOmatic.com/entry/2009-06-03T16_27_44-07_00

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman once again speaks with our colleague Kid Peligro, a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt, a senior editor of the ADCC News (http://www.adcombat.com/), and a correspondent on our show.

Our main topic is the 2009 World Jiu-Jitsu Championship (http://www.ibjjf.org/mundial2009registration.htm), also known as the Mundials, which take place Thursday, June 4, through Sunday, June 7, at the Pyramid at California State University Long Beach.

We also discuss the recently completed West Coast Trials for the 2009 ADCC Submission Wrestling World Championship (http://www.adcombat.net/adnet/Wrestling/), and the East Coast Trials (http://www.adccusa.com/), which take place the weekend of June 13-14 at J. Collins Arena at Brookdale Community College in Lincroft, New Jersey. These Trials are qualifiers for 2009 ADCC Submission Wrestling World Championship, which takes place the weekend of September 26-27 in Barcelona, Spain.

In a lengthy interview, we discuss who will compete at these events and who are the favorites to win. We go through the history and significance of these events. We also analyze what they need to do in order to advance to the next level of popularity among the legions of grappling, jiu-jitsu, wrestling, and combat sports aficionados around the world. And as always, we highlight the many benefits and positive values grappling and jiu-jitsu offer to both their competitors and fans.

On this week's edition of SecondsOut Radio, we preview two very different boxing shows coming up this week. On Saturday, February 7, the long-awaited showdown between two champion sluggers, the IBF, WBC, and WBA 115-pound champion, Vic Darchinyan (31-1-1, 25 KOs), and the WBA interim super flyweight champion and former WBC 108 and 112-pound and WBO 108-pound champion, Jorge Arce (51-4-1, 39 KOs), takes place at the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif. This fight will be shown in the U.S. on Showtime. We had a chance to speak with both Vic Darchinyan and Jorge Arce on a media conference call about this highly-anticipated fight, which most people expect to be one of the most action-packed of the year. Also this coming week, on Tuesday, February 3, the first in a series of local shows featuring up-and-coming fighters and run by the world-famous Gleason's Gym will take place at the Masonic Temple in Brooklyn, New York. Most of the fights will be four-rounders, plus a main event featuring two top-level super flyweights, Rafael Concepcion (12-3-1, 8 KOs) against veteran Kermin Guardia (37-8, 21 KOs). This card marks the return to promoting after a two-decade long absence by Bruce Silverglade, who owns Gleason's Gym. At a news conference this past week at Portobello's Pizzeria and Sicilian Kitchen in New York, we spoke with Bruce Silverglade about his goals as a promoter and with these shows. On this week's edition of SecondsOut Radio, we begin by commenting on this past Saturday's thrilling fight between Kendall Holt (24-2, 13 KOs) and Ricardo Torres (32-2, 28 KOs). After being dropped twice, Holt rallied to knock out Torres in just 61 seconds of the first round to capture the WBO junior welterweight title from Torres. No Holds Barred: Tom Atencio on Affliction and Donald Trump, Kid Peligro on Jiu-Jitsu World Championships, Vernon Forrest

No Holds Barred: Tom Atencio on Affliction and Donald Trump, Kid Peligro on Jiu-Jitsu World Championships, Vernon Forrest

http://nhbnews.podOmatic.com/entry/2008-06-05T18_46_51-07_00

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman begins by discussing the changed business climate for mixed martial arts following the ratings success of last Saturday’s EliteXC show on CBS.

In light of this, we covered the news conference Thursday in New York, where it was announced that the Affliction mixed martial arts promotion (http://www.afflictionclothing.com/banned/) and real estate mogul Donald Trump had entered into a partnership, with Trump buying an equity stake in Affliction. The inaugural Affliction show takes place Saturday, July 19, at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California, and will be shown in the U.S. on pay-per-view.

We got a brief comment from Trump about why he chose to invest in Affliction, and spoke with Tom Atencio, vice president of Affliction, about the company's business plans, as well as their intention of creating unified MMA championships by working with the new sanctioning body, WAMMA (http://www.gowamma.com/).

This Saturday night, June 7, WBC super welterweight champion Vernon Forrest (40-2, 29 KOs) will defend his title against Sergio Mora (20-0-1, 5 KOs) from "The Contender" series. This fight takes place at the Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, Conn., and will be shown in the U.S. on Showtime. We spoke with Vernon Forrest Thursday afternoon at a New York news conference about this fight and what to expect in it.

Also this busy weekend, the 2008 World Jiu-Jitsu Championships, better known as the Mundials, take place beginning Thursday, June 5, and running through Sunday, June 8, at the Walter Pyramid on the campus of California State University Long Beach in Long Beach, California. This event is organized by the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation (http://ibjjf.org/).

To preview the Mundials, we spoke with our colleague Kid Peligro, a senior editor of the ADCC News (http://adcombat.com/) and a correspondent on our show. In a lengthy discussion, Kid offered his picks for the favorites in the weight classes in the men's and women's black belt divisions, as well as the absolutes. We also discussed the critical role of grappling in the mixed martial arts.

Also, No Holds Barred is available through iTunes at http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewPodcast?id=150801513&s=143441.

We spoke with both Vernon Forrest and Sergio Mora on a media teleconference call this past week about what to expect in this fight.
