The Son of Former Legendary Champion to Battle Harry Joe Yorgey In Matchup of Unbeatens on ShoBox: The New Generation

NEW YORK– Ronald Hearns loves March and all the madness that goes with it.

The son of legendary eight-time world champion Thomas “Hit Man” Hearns, Ronald earned his college degree in criminal justice from American University in Washington D.C. While in college, Hearns played for the basketball team. This year American University’s basketball team won the Patriot League and advanced to the exclusive tournament field of 64 for the 2009 NCAA® Division I Men’s Basketball Championship for the first time.

But this Saturday night, Hearns will be nowhere near a court; rather, he’ll be in the ring when he faces fellow unbeaten junior middleweight Harry Joe Yorgey in a 10-round bout on a special Saturday edition of ShoBox: The New Generation live on SHOWTIME (11 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the west coast).

Detroit’s Hearns (21-0, 17 KOs) and Yorgey (21-0-1, 9 KOs), of Bridgeport, Pa., will open the ShoBox telecast from the Buffalo Run Casino in Miami, Okla.

World-class super middleweight Andre Dirrell (17-0, 12 KOs), of Flint, Mich., will meet Derrick Findley (13-2, 8 KO’s) of Gary, Ind., in the ShoBox main event. The event is promoted by Gary Shaw Productions, LLC, and DiBella Entertainment.

SHOWTIME: You played collegiate basketball at American University. Did you follow its run in the NCAA tournament?

RONALD HEARNS: “Oh, man, yeah, I love March Madness®. I don’t know many of the players, but I got an email from the coach. My bracket is going OK. I like Pittsburgh. I like Connecticut and l like Louisville.

SHOWTIME: You turned professional after obtaining your college degree. Did you always think you would be a professional fighter?

RONALD HEARNS: “Boxing was always my first love. I always wanted to box since I was about 10 or 11 years old but my dad never allowed me to fight at that time so every time I tried to sneak into the gym the guys would catch me and ban me from the gym. My dad told me once I got my college degree that I could box so I went and did that. He knew I’d be a grown man then and could make my own decision. So the day I came home from graduation I told him I wanted to go to the gym and that’s when I started training.

“It’s something that’s just in me. I love boxing so much. Every time I put a tape in and watch a fight, I just want to get up and start punching somebody. It doesn’t matter if it’s my dad I’m watching or someone else, I just love watching boxing. You could say I’m a real student of the game.”

SHOWTIME: You haven’t fought since last appearing on SHOWTIME in October when you beat Paul Clavette. Has the layoff affected you and your training?

RONALD HEARNS: “It’s been kind of hard because I was scheduled to fight in January but that fight was called off. But I always stay in the gym no matter what. I’m always in there training. I’m a real gym rat. Harry’s a great fighter. He’s a real good boxer and can be flashy at times. You know when you get two undefeated fighters in the ring at the same time that someone’s ‘O’ has got to go. We’re putting it all on the line and hope to put on a great show for the people.”

SHOWTIME: Has it been difficult being the son of Thomas Hearns?

RONALD HEARNS: “Yeah, in a way it’s been tough because the expectations have been set so high. With the things he accomplished the bar is set pretty high. I turned pro so late (age 25) and have really had to learn on the job. People don’t know that I was never really around boxing that much as a kid. I was never in the gym training and really learning how to box. Things are just starting to fall in place right now. But I think I don’t really have all the wear and tear on my body from my limited amateur experience so right now I don’t think that age (Hearns recently turned 30) really matters.”

SHOWTIME: What are some of your earliest memories of your father and boxing?

RONALD HEARNS: I think just watching early tapes of my dad’s fights. The Pipino Cuevas fight (for the WBA welterweight championship in 1980), the (Juan Domingo) Roldan fight (for the WBC middleweight championship in 1987), the first and second (Sugar Ray) Leonard fights and the (Marvin) Hagler fight. There were just so many memorable moments. Just sitting back and putting the tapes in. I just never get sick of watching them. He’ll be leading me into the ring on Saturday. He always lets me know he’s there for me and that I can give him a call anytime I need something. He’s been there and there’s nothing he hasn’t seen inside the ring.”

SHOWTIME: What kind of style will we see from you early on Saturday night?

RONALD HEARNS: “Well, Harry Joe is a front-runner. He always starts pretty quick. I’m going to go out there and try to slow him down early. I’m just going to work off my jab and once I get my jab going everything else will fall into place. I’m ready to go out there and perform and show the people how I’ve progressed and how I’m trying now to make a name for myself. I believe this fight will prove to people that I can do some special things in boxing.”

2004 U.S. Olympian Jason “Big Six” Estrada plans to upset No. 1 rated Alexander Povetkin April 4 in Dusseldorf, Germany

PROVIDENCE– 2004 U.S. Olympian Jason “Big Six” Estrada held an open media workout today at his ”Big Six Academy” in Providence before he departs Sunday for Germany to fight Alexander Povetkin, 2004 Olympic gold medalist and the IBF’s No. 1 contender, April 4 in Dusseldorf, Germany.

Estrada (15-1, 3 KOs) and Povetkin (16-0, 12 KOs) nearly fought several times as amateurs but it never materialized, due to their contrasting schedules, until now as professionals. Povetkin, who has a mandated title shot this fall against IBF heavyweight Wladimir Klitschko, signed to fight Estrada because, according to reports from his camp, he wants a test not a tune-up.

“Training has gone well and my body is good,” Estrada said today. “I’m going over there to whoop his butt. He’s going to be out of his league. He’s not used to fighting somebody like me. This isn’t going to be cute; it’s going to be a real fight. The only real fight he’s been in was against Eddie Chambers (WDEC12). I thought he (Povetkin) lost but they gave it to him. He’d throw five slaps but only two would be what I call clean. I’m a lot more aggressive and mean than Eddie Chambers.”

Providence-native Estrada was one of the most highly decorated American amateur boxers ever, compiling an amazing 261-14 record in U.S. competition. He was the first boxer to win both the U.S. Nationals and U.S. Challenge three years (2001-2003) in a row.

For more information about Estrada go to his promoter’s (Jimmy Burchfield’s Classic Entertainment and Sports, Inc.) web site at www.cesboxing.com.

No Holds Barred: King Mo Lawal

No Holds Barred: King Mo Lawal

http://nhbnews.podOmatic.com/entry/2009-03-25T07_06_58-07_00

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with one of the hottest rising stars in mixed martial arts, King Mo Lawal (http://www.myspace.com/molawal). Mo just upped his pro record to 4-0 by taking a lopsided unanimous decision over Ryo Kawamura, who is also the light heavyweight King of Pancrase, at the Sengoku card, held March 20 in Tokyo.

In a lengthy interview, we discuss the injuries to Mo's knee and hand which necessitated a change of strategy in his latest fight, how he will likely undergo surgery to repair his knee, how long he will probably be unable to fight because of this surgery, his plans to incorporate submissions into his repertoire, his training in boxing and kickboxing, why he has adopted this entertaining King Mo persona, how he feels about sportsmanship in mixed martial arts, his plans for an eventual return to wrestling where he was a three-time U.S. national freestyle champion, his views on college wrestling compared to the international styles of wrestling, how he likes fighting in Japan and for the Sengoku organization, whether he would consider fighting in the U.S., his relations with the fans in Japan, his Queens who accompany him in Japan, and more.

Also, No Holds Barred is available through iTunes at http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewPodcast?id=150801513&s=143441.

The show is in MP3 format, so may take some time to download.

The No Holds Barred theme song is called "The Heist", by musician Ian Carpenter (http://iancarpenter.com/).

Make sure to check out my regular weekly boxing show SecondsOut Radio, at http://www.secondsout.com/radio/. On this week's edition of SecondsOut Radio, we begin with a few comments on why fights like the Vitali Klitschko-Juan Carlos Gomez WBC title bout, held Saturday, March 21, and won by Klitschko by a ninth-round TKO, are not good for the beleaguered heavyweight division. We also comment on the issue of Internet "piracy" and who the real pirates are. This is where millionaires put on lousy matchups which have so little appeal that the free networks do not want to buy them, then try to sell them to the average fans as pay-per-views, and then hire fancy lawyers who threaten to sue individuals who watch them on unauthorized web sites. Next, we return to the second and final part of our lengthy interview with Dr. Margaret Goodman, a neurologist and former chairman of the Medical Advisory Board of the Nevada State Athletic Commission. After laying out in the first part some of the health and safety problems such as the use of steroids and other harmful, banned substances, we now discuss what can be done to improve the health and safety measures in boxing, and what role a national boxing commission in the U.S. should play. McCullough fight unlikely but Vazquez and Caballero in Dunne's sights‏

Promoter Brian Peters believes that Wayne McCullough is still some way from a crack at newly crowned WBA World Super Bantamweight champion, Bernard Dunne.

McCullough sent an open letter to Dunne yesterday challenging him to put his new title on the line against him in an all Irish World title fight. However with McCullough just months away from his 39th birthday and coming off 3 straight defeats Peters thinks it’s a match that’s a long way from reality.

“Wayne’s a good friend and he’s been a great servant to Irish boxing as well as a great world champion,” said Peters. “However he hasn’t won a fight since 2004 so he really would need to put together a few good wins including a win over a ranked contender before it could be considered a viable fight.”

Peters says that no firm decisions have been made yet with regard to Bernard’s next fight and all options are currently being explored. “At the moment Bernard is taking a well earned break and enjoying his success. It was an incredible fight and an incredible night and we’re certainly not short of options now.

“As I said after the fight the world is his oyster and there are all kinds of avenues open to us now. It’s a case of taking our time and working out what the best move is but we certainly won’t rush into anything.”

“Obviously now that Bernard’s become a World Champion he’s in a very strong position. The dream fight would be a big Las Vegas showdown with Israel Vazquez. He’s currently sidelined with a few long term injuries but is considered one of the best pound for pound fighters in the sport.

“It’s a clash Bernard would relish as he sparred Vazquez day in, day out as a young pro when he was out in Los Angeles and I think those sparring sessions proved to a lot of people that Bernard had what it takes to reach the very top of the sport.

“You also have guys like Celestino Caballero calling Bernard out. He says he’d be willing to come to Ireland so right now there are a lot of options to consider including the possibility of a voluntary defence for Bernard at home in Dublin.”

Peters has also warned of an even scarier prospect for the World’s super bantamweights.

“I still believe we’ve yet to see the best of Bernard Dunne, he proved last Saturday night that he belongs up there with the legends of Irish sport and I still think there is more to come from him over the next few years.”
See you at the Fights.

Chris Tuchscherer captures 1st SNMMA title at “Beatdown 4”

NEW TOWN, North Dakota– North Dakota-native Chris Tuchscherer captured the first Sovereign Nations Mixed Martial Arts (SNMMA) title by defeating veteran heavyweight Brandon “The Iron Lion” Lee Hinkle, headlining “Beatdown 4” last Saturday night before a sold-out crowd at 4 Bears Casino in New Town, North Dakota.

SNMMA links federally recognized tribes throughout the United States and Canada. SNMMA’s mission is to develop, promote and help regulate mixed-martial-arts in a fair and professional manner by federally recognized tribes that are sovereign nations.

Former NCAA, Division II wrestling champion Hinkle (14-10-1, 8 (T)KO, 4 Submissions), fighting out of Columbus, Ohio, didn’t have any answers for 2-time NCAA, Div. II All-America wrestler Tuchscherer (16-1-0, 5 (T)KOs, 7 Submissions), who hails from nearby Fargo.

Tuchscherer, who trains regularly with UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar in Minneapolis, controlled the action from start to finish, which came at 4:43 of the fourth round, when the referee stopped the fight due to a series of damaging strikes.

“Chris is a great athlete who takes the sport and his career very serious like a true professional must in order to have any kind of future in this demanding sport,” SNMMA president Pat Packineau said. “The SNMMA is honored to have the heavyweight title go to a person such as Chris Tuchscherer, who respects what the sport has to offer as he continues his journey to become one of the top fighters in the world.”

Minnesota Martial Arts Academy welterweight Nick “The Carnie” Lentz (15-3-1) won a three-round unanimous decision against ex-UFC fighter Drew Fickett (36-11-0) in the co-feature.

MATTHEWS-PASLEY ADDED TO LEGENDARY BLUE HORIZON CARD ON APRIL 3RD Cruiserweight showdown added to packed card on April 3rd

PHILADELPHIA- A very intriguing six round cruiserweight fight has been added to an already packed show that will take place at The Legendary Blue Horizon on Friday night, April 3rd.

The card is promoted by Vernoca L. Michael and Blue Horizon Boxing Promotions Inc.

Julio Cesar Matthews will risk his undefeated record when he takes on the streaking Kamrah Pasley in a bout scheduled for six rounds.

Matthews of Reading, PA has a record of 6-0 with five knockouts and has knocked out four straight opponents since returning from an eleven year hiatus from the ring.

The thirty-nine year old Matthews scored his most significant stoppages in his last two bouts when he first took out Chris Stallworth (9-1) in fifty-nine seconds on September 13th, 2009. In his last bout, Matthews scored a third round stoppage over William Bailey on December 5th in Reading.

Despite losing his first three bouts, Pasley was undeterred and it has paid off as he has won his last three bouts to get back to an even record of 3-3 with one knockout.

Those three losses came at The Legendary Blue Horizon so Pasley will be looking for redemption in The Blue Horizon ring.

Pasley has won all three of those bouts in 2009. The streak started with a third round stoppage of thirty-three fight veteran Cullen Rogers on January 16th. Then he scored a shocking unanimous decision over prospect Pedro Martinez (3-1) on January 31st. In his last bout, Pasley scored four round unanimous decision over debuting John Burgos on March 13th.

That fight was added to a much anticipated card that will feature one of the most talked about bouts in the city as undefeated Israeli sensation, Ran Nakash (17-0, 12 KO’s)takes on Philly-favorite Dave Brunelli (8-4, 3 KO’s) in a cruiserweight fight scheduled for eight rounds.

Last week, Team Brunelli guaranteed victory. Nakash will be arriving in Philadelphia this coming weekend and they will be sure to have a response to Brunelli’s proclamation.

In a much talked about co-feature, Tyric “Too Sweet” Robinson (9-3-1, 3 KO’s) battles Julias Edmonds (4-3) in a six round Jr. Welterweight “Philly Turf War” showdown.

Middleweight Gee Cullmer (15-1, 3 KO’s) takes on Anthony Little (7-11-1, 1 KO of Akron, Ohio in a bout scheduled for eight rounds.

Exciting super featherweight, Joselito Collado (6-0, 2 KO’s) returns to The Legendary Blue Horizon as he takes on Jason Rorie (2-2-2, 1 KO) of Winston-Salem, North Carolina in a bout scheduled for six rounds.

Taneal Goyco (1-0, 1 KO) tussles with Davit Davitshvili (0-1) in a battle of Philly based Cruiserweights scheduled for four rounds.

Derrick Bivins (1-0-1) of Philadelphia takes on Joseph Francisco (1-1) of Jacksboro, Tennessee in a Super Featherweight bout scheduled for four rounds.

Separate bouts involving welterweight Ronald Cruz (2-0, 1 KO) of Bethlehem, PA and New York based Jr. Welterweight Christian Martinez (1-0, 1 KO) will also be a part of this big night of boxing.

The show will be streamed LIVE!!!! All over the world on www.gofightlive.tv

Philadelphia Fan Favorite Takes On Ronald Hearns In Battle of Unbeatens on ShoBox: The New Generation, Saturday, March 28, Live on SHOWTIME, 11 p.m. E

NEW YORK– “Lightning” Harry Joe Yorgey puts his undefeated record on the line March 28, when he faces fellow unbeaten junior middleweight Ronald Hearns in a 10-round bout on a special Saturday edition of ShoBox: The New Generation live on SHOWTIME (11 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the west coast).

Yorgey is proud to have the opportunity to compete on national television.

“If I’m a boxing fan and I don’t have SHOWTIME then I’m going to run out and get it,” the outgoing, well-spoken Bridgeport, Pa., resident said. “You’ve got two guys that are undefeated trying to make it to the top. It’s going to be great.”

Detroit’s Hearns (21-0, 17 KOs), the son of legendary Thomas “Hit Man” Hearns, and Yorgey (21-0-1, 9 KOs) will open the ShoBox telecast from the Buffalo Run Casino in Miami, Okla.

Yorgey was interviewed recently by SHOWTIME.

SHOWTIME: What are you thoughts about Ronald Hearns?

YORGEY: “Well, we’ve seen a lot of film on Ronald Hearns. He’s a tall fighter and he has a long reach and he knows how to use it. He uses it to his advantage. With a guy like this you have to box and move and stay inside with him. You have to respect his record of 21-0 and 17 knockouts. Of course, I’m aware of who his father is. So many people and reporters have asked me about that. I respect that a lot, but I’m not fighting his father. If he fights anything like his father then I’m in for a big, big fight.”

SHOWTIME: He has a distinct height advantage. How will you cope with that?

YORGEY: “I’m 5-10 and a half and that’s about right for my division. I’ve fought a lot of taller guys, especially in the amateurs, and believe it or not you’ve got to establish your jab. You can’t sit on the end of his jab at his distance. You’ve got to work the angles. I’m ready for whatever he brings to the table.”

SHOWTIME: You quit your full-time job to concentrate on boxing and training for your fights? How is your training going?

YORGEY: “Yeah, it’s going really well. I worked construction for about 10 years. It was tough, the 12-14 hours a day and then two more hours in the gym and then jogging. I had to do it to pay the bills and be a good father to my four kids. These guys I’m going to start facing are not doing that. They’re committed to boxing. So my wife and I got together and she agreed to go back to work and let me train a little in the morning with conditioning and I do my boxing training at night. It’s been tough. I went through a legal battle with my former team. They cancelled some fights on me and so that set me back a little bit but we’re getting through it. I am working with my trainer Henry Rachich and it is going great.”

SHOWTIME: Who was your major influence in boxing growing up?

YORGEY: “My father and I have been watching fights since I was two years old and running around punching the walls. Marvin Hagler was my favorite fighter. I remember watching his fights. My father finally put me in the gym when I was eight or nine years old.”

SHOWTIME: You have four kids. Do they watch your fights?

YORGEY: “Yeah, they do. My oldest son is 12 and he’s had two sparring matches so far. We’ll see if he sticks with it and likes it. He’s going to be in Oklahoma with me and will carry my (IBF North American) belt into the ring.”

SHOWTIME: You’re dedicating this fight to someone close to you. Can you tell us more about that?

YORGEY: “My buddy’s’ niece just turned 23 and the doctors have only given her a couple of months to live. She has a rare, aggressive form of cancer called Desmoplastic Small Round Cell Tumor. I know she’s battling right now and she’s hurting and fighting the cancer day-by-day. Her name is Shannon Yoder and we’re going to have a raffle at the fight to help her family with the medical costs. You can check out my web site at www.harryyorgey.net for more information on it.”

Fight Engine:Revolutionizing MMA scouting, promoting & matchmaking

Las Vegas, Nevada– FightEngine.com, featuring legendary superstar and MMA fighter Bob Sapp as one of its principal board of advisors, today announced the launching of its state-of-the-art website, www.fightengine.com, revolutionizing the way mixed-martial-arts fighters market themselves, promoters and managers scout fighters, and fans become legitimate matchmakers.

“I’ve fought around the world and FightEngine.com has been designed so fighters from any country can register, gain invaluable exposure and be scouted by top MMA promoters,” Sapp explained. “We are not a promotional company; fightengine.com is a fighter/promoter’s promoter, enabling MMA organizations to scout fighters from around the world without leaving their computer in order to discover the next great MMA fighter.”

FightEngine.com is apolitical without any preference to specific promoters. In fact, FightEngine.com works with promoters and fighters to gain international notoriety for them through www.fightengine.com. Any registered fighter, for a nominal fee, may challenge other registered fighters, allowing each participant to accept or deny challenges, as well as express their semi-uncensored opinions about any posted challenges.

FightEngine.com is non-discriminatory, providing male and female fighters, in addition to ring girls, opportunities to gain exposure on the website.

Fans can get in on the action, for free, simply by registering on the website to become quasi-matchmakers, picking fighters they’d like to watch in matches, as well as commenting about fights other spectators propose.

A thermometer can be found on the right-hand side of the website, which will illuminate on a rising basis, according to the amount of registered fighters, and subsequently fights will be arranged once the thermometer reaches the apex.

Once there are enough fighters and fans registered on the website, hopefully within 90 days, FightEngine.com will serve as a tool to arrange fights on a super card, guaranteeing purses of $10,000, $25,000, $50,000 and $100,000.

FREE OFFER: The first 100 applicants who register on www.fightengine.com are eligible to receive a complimentary posting of their 5 MB videos for the first three months.

Future plans include a “KO the Pro” section where a top level fighter will be posted while other fighters will vie to be selected for a “KO the Pro” match-up. “The initial KO The Pro is me, ‘The Beast,’ and anyone who wants an opportunity to fight me must submit your videos and let the web-voting audience decide if you are tough enough to take me on.”

See you at the Fights.
Thanks for your time.

Jones stops Sheika in 5 rounds Flores decisions Herrera for NABO title Monson, Lashley, Thomas and Hallman MMA winners

PENSACOLA, Fla.-- Fighting at home for the first time in a decade, 8-time world champion Roy Jones, Jr. (53-5, 39 KOs) fought before a packed house of loyal fans and gave them exactly what they came for with a dazzling display of superior quickness and athleticism en route to a fifth-round stoppage of 4-time world title challenger Omar Sheika for the vacant NABO championship last night in Pensacola, Florida.

Jones-Sheika (27-8) headlined tonight’s hybrid pro boxing/mixed-martial-arts show, presented by Jones’ Square Ring Promotions in association with Hirsch Borao Boxing, on pay-per-view live from the Pensacola Civic Center.

The rejuvenated Jones put on another boxing clinic, firing a wide assortment of head and body punches that consistently landed from every conceivable angle from start to finish on the rugged but overmatched Sheika, who simply had no answers for the test given by the future Hall of Fame-bound Jones.

“I want to give thanks to Pensacola in the house,” Jones announced from the center of the ring after the fight. I felt really good. I’m ready. With my father, Coach Merk and my team I’m more comfortable. Do you want me back? (Roy asked the crowd that responded with a thunderous yes). I’ll be coming back.”

In the featured MMA fight of the night, Jeff Monson won a close three-round decision, 29-28 on three cards, in an evenly matched battle between two of the best grapplers in the world. The fight was even going into the final round, in which, Monson’s more effective striking – three clear punches – was the eventual difference.

“I wanted to go on the ground,” Monson commented. “I kept right with him. It was a big win. Roy’s a tough guy.”

Nelson didn’t agree with the final decision. “I got robbed,” he claimed. “It was a boring fight on the ground, but I was controlling the fight and that usually determines the winner. Only in Florida does Roy get robbed (referring to his controversial loss to Andrei Arlovski).”

Unbeaten world-rated B.J. Flores, improving his record to 23-0, captured the vacant NABO junior heavyweight title by a one-sided, unanimous 10-round decision in a workmanlike effort against Colombian knockout artist Jose Luis Herrera (16-6, 16 KOs).

“He’s a veteran with 16 knockouts,” Flores said of Herrera. “By the third or fourth round I knew I could hurt him with some big shots, but I hit him with a left (hurting his hand) in the forehead. I used it early but not later. In the 10th I started to put it together. I went the distance with Herrera and next I want Victor Ramirez (WBO Interim junior heavyweight champion).”

“He was a little faster than me and he moved better,” Herrera agreed with the decision. “I was a little frustrated by him throughout the fight.”

Going into the match with only one round of MMA experience, former WWE star Bobby Lashley was able to win all three rounds against tough veteran Jason Guida, a replacement who took the fight on 1-½ week notice. Guida nearly pulled-off a major upset early in the third round with a guillotine choke, but the powerfully built Lashley was able to pop his head out of the hold.

“I thought I had him,” Guida noted as he shook his head in frustration when the scores were announced.

“He had it on tight and deep,” Lashley remarked. “But I held on and got out. I didn’t use all of my wrestling skills. This is a sport where we’re gentleman and fighters. His talk got to me a little but my corner helped me keep my mind strong. I’m going right back to the training room.”

Feather rweight Din Thomas’ experience and striking advantages resulted in a first-round technical knockout of Gabe Lemley at 4:13 of the first round. Thomas’ series of powerful strikes led Lemley to try and shoot underneath Thomas (23-8), who countered with a picture perfect Muay Thai-knee, sending Lemley down, face first, as the referee immediately halted the action due to the force of the impact.

“Yeah,” Thomas explained, “I set him up with my punches. I had a lot of fun here; I love Pensacola. Boxing is a major part of MMA and was glad to be part of this (boxing/MA event). I took advantage of my experience. I can fight in a cage, ring or parking lot – I don’t care.”

Sixty-three fight MMA veteran Dennis “Superman” Hallman (49-12-2) didn’t miss a beat despite having his first fight in 16 months as he locked-in a rear naked choke from the back, forcing welterweight Danny Ruiz to tap-out at 1:50 of the opening round.

“I guess the layoff didn’t hurt,” Hallman said after the fight. “It took a few seconds for me to get going, but once he hit me I knew I was in a fight and got going.”

No Holds Barred: NCAA Wrestling Recap with Bob Mayeri, and Sengoku 7 Review

No Holds Barred: NCAA Wrestling Recap with Bob Mayeri, and Sengoku 7 Review

http://nhbnews.podOmatic.com/entry/2009-03-22T16_35_44-07_00

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman discusses two events which were held this past weekend which showcased some of the best aspects of the combat sports.

We begin by discussing the Sengoku 7 mixed martial arts card, which was held in Tokyo, Japan, Friday, March 20. Among the featured fights was the fourth straight win in the young professional career of three-time U.S. national freestyle wrestling champion King Mo Lawal. Despite several injuries, he dominated his fight and won a three-round unanimous decision over Ryo Kawamura, who is also the light heavyweight King of Pancrase. The first round of the Sengoku featherweight tournament was highlighted by the submission clinic put on another rising star, Hatsu Hioki, who defeated Chris Manuel by an arm bar submission in the first round of their fight. There were several other good fights on this card as well, which overall displayed a very high level of technique for mixed martial arts.

The 2009 NCAA Div. I Wrestling Championships are now in the books, and this event, held March 19-21 in St. Louis, proved to be one of the most exciting, evenly-matched, and important of its kind. While Iowa won their second straight national team title, they had no individual champions. Instead, wrestlers from ten different schools won these honors in the ten weight classes contested in college wrestling. One of the most historic upsets took place in 149-pound finals, as Darrion Caldwell of North Carolina State dominated the top-seeded and unbeaten Brent Metcalf of Iowa, 11-6. We also discuss the incredible story of Anthony Robles, the Arizona State wrestler who was born with only one leg, and placed fourth in the nation at 125 pounds in this tournament to win All-American status.

We discuss this amazing tournament, and what it all means for wrestling, with our correspondent Bob Mayeri, who was matside in St. Louis for this event.

It is free to listen to or download SecondsOut Radio, but you must register to gain access to it. Just click here, http://www.secondsout.com/radio/, and listen, learn, and enjoy.

No Holds Barred: Boxing and Wrestling This Week, Media and Technology

No Holds Barred: Boxing and Wrestling This Week, Media and Technology On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman begins bye xplaining why no tears should be shed for the decline of the mainstream media, and in particular the newspapers, largely due to new technology making their business models obsolete. We also discuss the mainstream media, especially in America, their abject failure in covering the combat sports, and the need to support independent media. We next focus on the rarity coming up this weekend, when boxing and wrestling will be featured back-to-back on both Friday and Saturday nights on the ESPN networks in the U.S. The always-exciting semi finals of the 2009 NCAA Div. I Wrestling Championships will be shown on ESPN2 Friday night, March 20, beginningat 7 PM EDT, followed by Friday Night Fights. On Saturday, March 21, the WBC heavyweight title fight between champion Vitali Klitschko and challenger Juan Carlos Gomez will be shown live from Germany on ESPN beginning at 5 PM EDT. At 6:30 PM EDT,the finals of 2009 NCAA Div. I Wrestling Championships will be shown live on ESPN. There is also an assortment of other telecasts and webcasts this weekend in the combat sports, some more worthy than others. We discuss these telecasts and webcasts, analyze the Klitschko-Gomezfight, and make some recommendations about how to allocate your viewing time this busy weekend. Also, we discuss the rapid growth of social media, including Twitter, where somehow one ranking service almost inexplicably stated, "Eddie Goldman is ranked 1st in their location on twitterholic! (by followersin 'New York NY USA')" Maybe, maybe not, but you can join the party at http://twitter.com/nhbnews. London, UK/Philadelphia PA, USA - Steve ‘USS’ Cunningham’s English ‘Golden Girl’ On May 9th Philly Title Card. In February ‘08 legendary Heavyweight boxing champion of the world Smokin’Joe Frazier simply said “She’s going to be the Champ.” and his son former Heavyweight contender Marvis said "Marianne is the hardest working(training), committed fighters I have seen in a long time. She's very hard for any fighter to deal with. She's strong, fast and accurate, has lots ofcombinations and punches hard, so hard it's like being hit by a Heavyweight." In April ‘08 Jnr. Middleweight world champion Robert ‘Bam Bam’ Hines said “Marianne’s an exciting fighter who’s got it all. One thing for sure she’s going to be the Champ...soon.” Then in November ‘08 IBF Cruiserweight Champion Steve ‘USS’ Cunningham was so impressed with her that he invited her to be part of his team. Now after various well publicised false starts Philadelphia based English Bantamweight Marianne ‘Golden Girl’ Marston, who was originally brought to America by the legendary Heavyweight Champion of the World Smokin’ Joe Frazier in a blaze of publicity, will finally have her long awaited debut, virtually one whole year later than planned, on the undercard of Brian Cohen’s WBO Light Heavyweight title fight in South Philadelphia on the 9th May 2009. In February ‘08 Marianne took the huge step of traveling thousands ofmiles from her home in London, England to Philadelphia to train full time under the personal tutelage of Smokin’ Joe Frazier and his son Marvis at their North Philadelphia landmark gym after Frazier had advised her tospend six months training with him so he could get her fully prepared forher debut.
Just 58 days after making the commitment Smokin’ Joe Frazier’s gym closed.Shortly after Marianne moved her “home” gym to Percy ‘Buster’ Custus’James Shuler Memorial Gym and continued to train for her professional debut which was to be the ill fated Casino Battle Royale event in Atlantic City. Smokin’ Joe is not the only World Champion to be impressed by Marianne’snatural talent as not long after she moved gym Cruiserweight King Steve ‘USS’ Cunningham and his wife and manager Livvy, who are also based at the West Philadelphia gym, invited her to be part of their team. After promoter Ivan Cohen confirmed on Wednesday that Marianne is to be on the card a very pleased Steve ‘USS’ Cunningham said of his protégé "Whata great opportunity for Marianne.

She has the heart, work ethic and determination of a true champion. This May she'll be on her way, watchout for ‘Golden Girl’!" Marianne, who is currently in London, will be returning to Philadelphiashortly to go into training camp with Team ‘USS’ Cunningham’s head coach Anthony Chase, spoke briefly on the news. “I’m so honoured that Ivan is tohave me on the card of this important fight. I also must thank him as hehas offered me sparring with two of his female fighters to help in my preparations. I can’t wait to get back to Philly to prepare with Chase,Steve and Shar’ron. They are great trainers, Shar’ron has been awesome, her techniques really suit my style and in the short amount of time I havehad to work with Chase he took me to another level altogether. As for Steve, what can I say he is a great fighter and his advice has been unbelievable. My fighting style has changed thanks to them, I feel that Iam a total fighter now. I’m ready to fight now and can’t wait until May.” Marianne’s fight will be part of the Ivan Cohen promoted WBO Light Heavyweight title fight featuring Philadelphia’s Brian Cohen on May 9th 2009 at the South Philadelphia High School. The co-feature will headed by Gabrielle Rosadl. Also on the card will be Marianne’s regular sparring partner Christina Leadbeater from New Jersey. The full card is expected tobe announced shortly. www.mariannemarston.com

Where will Aretha Franklin be celebrating her birthday this coming Wednesday? Where will Philip Anselmo of the platinum-selling world renowned, Pantera and Down, be partying loud and proud? Where will Jim Lampley of HBO fame be the master emcee?

Answer: The Kronk Foundation's mega fundraiser. It will be Metro Detroit's biggest bash, and it will pack quite a punch.

It will be a great, fun-filled event - loaded with celebrities, good food, even better wine and all sorts of goodies at a live and silent auction. But act quickly: The tickets are going fast.

If you want to assuage your guilt, remember this - it's for fabulous cause: The Kronk Gym and the good work it does.

The Kronk Gym is internationally known for turning out champion boxers. Its founder, Emanuel Steward, has become a legend of the ring.

But fewer people know all the good work Kronk does for the youth of Metro Detroit, helping to instill in them a sense of pride and respect for their community.

To celebrate its storied history and to raise money so it can help even more kids, The Kronk Gym Foundation is holding its first annual fundraiser on Wednesday, March 25, 2009, at the Townsend Hotel, in Birmingham, MI.

The proceeds from this event will help expand youth activities, which will be housed in the new Kronk Gym.

Since its founding in 1969, the Kronk Gym has provided a recreational outlet for many youngsters in the metropolitan Detroit area. Through the coaching and guidance they received, some of these youths went on to become world-class athletes. More of them became world-class citizens.

To perpetuate this legacy, Emanuel Steward created the Kronk Gym Foundation this year, a nonprofit organization committed to making a difference in the well-being of youth through character-building, education and recreation. The program's goal is to provide recreational facilities, in addition to mentoring and tutoring, for the overall development of youth in Metro Detroit.

Emanuel Steward says, "For many youngsters who have unfortunate home lives, the Kronk Gym and its programs are crucial.

"They are the difference between a life on the streets and a life of accomplishment."

Special awards will be given to people who have shown the caring side of the boxing and sporting worlds. Among the recipients will be Sugar Ray Leonard, Detroit's own Thomas Hearns, Don Barden, former Michigan Boxing Commissioner and boxing humanitarian Dr. Stuart Kirschenbaum, long-time Kronk supporter Sam Lafata, among others.

The live auction will feature items sure to turn the head of boxing fans: Many one of a kind items and several pairs of autographed boxing gloves signed by Oscar De La Hoya, Manny Pacquaio, Wladimir Klitschko and other world class champions. There will also be priceless experiences to bid upon.

Honorary chairs for the event are the current Heavyweight Champion of the World Wladimir Klitschko and former Heavyweight Champion Lennox Lewis.

Sponsors include former Detroit Red Wing Igor Larionov, whose private label wines will be featured at the reception, and Italmoda, the Eurostyle furniture store in Royal Oak; and Bentley of Troy, where you don't have to sacrifice quality, luxury or reliability.

The VIP Reception will begin at 6:00 p.m. The general reception and silent auction will start at 6:30 p.m.

Ticket are $500 for the VIP reception ($5,000 for VIP tables) and $200 for individual tickets. They can be purchased at www.KronkGymFoundation.com or by calling (248) 917-1793.

To make a Donation log onto www.KronkGymFoundation.com and choose from Limited Edition Kronk Merchandise. It's a good way to support the Kronk Gym Foundation, while doing a good deed for the community. For information about the Foundation, call (248) 917-1793.

CES Signs James McGirt, Jr.

PROVIDENCE– Jimmy Burchfield’s Classic Entertainment and Sports, Inc. (CES) announced today that it has signed super middleweight prospect James McGirt, Jr. to an exclusive, multi-year promotional contract.

The 26-year-old McGirt (19-2-1, 9 KOs), born in Brentwood, New York and now fighting out of Vero Beach (FL), is scheduled to make his CES debut on “River Rage” on May 22 at Twin River Event Center in Lincoln, Rhode Island. James is trained by his father, James “Buddy” McGirt, 2-time world champion and former Trainer of the Year

“CES doesn’t give-up on fighters after a loss as long as he has learned from a set-back and shown me he still has fire burning in his stomach to be a world champion,” Burchfield said. “We build champions and give personalized care to all of our fighters. I remember Scotty Pemberton getting knocked out by Hector Sanjurjo. We didn’t give up on Pemberton and he came back to be the No. 1 contender in the world and fought for the world title. It’s not always about the money; it’s about getting the job done.

“My reputation and word is my bond. James’ father Buddy was a champion – he’ll always be a champion – and he’s trained a lot of world champions. We are going to work together as a team to make James a world champion. He’s a very gifted boxer with a great pedigree. CES is a supportive team and everyone is delighted to add a talent like James to our growing stable that includes world-class fighters like Matt Godfrey, Jason Estrada and Joey Spina.”

Growing up, James used his natural athletic ability to play basketball, a sport he believes he’d be playing professionally somewhere today if he hadn’t given it up to box. McGirt’s tremendous quickness and athleticism was good enough for James, Jr. to earn a basketball scholarship to St. Petersburg Junior College, but boxing flowed through his veins and he decided to pursue boxing on a fulltime basis.

Off the hardcourt and into the four-cornered ring, James had a solid 44-4 amateur record, including gold medal performances in the Sunshine State Games and Southeast Regional, in addition to reaching the quarterfinals of the U.S. Championships twice and semifinals of the National PALs.

“My last name is a big part of me and my career,” James remarked. “I’m Buddy’s son. It’s in the genes. He was a great fighter and he’s one of the hottest trainers in boxing today. I’ve gained a lot of experience just being his son. The pressure is always going to be there because of who I am. I’ve been around this sport a long time and I know expectations are high.

“I’m very excited to get back in the ring. It’s been too long. I’ve heard a lot of good things about Mr. Burchfield and I’m grateful to him for giving me this great opportunity. I’m going back up to super middleweight. I had nothing left, no life after three rounds, at 160. I’m in the process of moving back up to 168, but we’re not jumping right up. This fight will be at around 164-165. I want to be a world champion.”

McGirt’s opponents always bring their A game, trying to defeat James and his famous father, which has often proven to be dangerous for James. “Yeah,” Buddy agreed, “but we have to let James’ action do the talking. The rest will take care of itself. Jimmy Burchfield is a great guy and I’m thankful for this opportunity he’s giving to my son.”

So, in many respects, it is last call for James McGirt. “It’s a new beginning,” his manager Dennis Witherow commented. “Jimmy is a straight forward guy who has been in this industry for a long time. He understands the job a promoter needs to do to take his fighter to the next level. We are all very happy that James has signed with CES.”

Peter Taking the Hard Way Back to the Title‏

Former WBC Heavyweight Champion Samuel Peter (32-2, 23 KOs) is a man of his word.

After losing his title to Vitali Klitschko last October in Germany, the powerful slugger vowed to redeem himself by taking on the best the division has to offer on his road back to the top.

And to prove he means what he says, Peter will jump right back into the thick of it against once-beaten and IBF #3 rated "Fast" Eddie Chambers (33-1, 18 KOs) on March 27 at the Nokia Theater in Downtown Los Angeles, California, and televised live on ESPN2 "Friday Night Fights".

"Samuel Peter has decided not to play safe for even one fight. Who else in the heavyweight division would choose an opponent like Eddie Chambers for his first fight back since losing the title?" asked Peter's promoter, Dino Duva of Duva Boxing. "Eddie Chambers has only lost once in his career in a respectable performance against Alexander Povetkin. And he has beaten Calvin Brock, Derric Rossy and Dominick Guinn among his 33 wins. "

Chambers, 3-0 against solid opposition since the Povetkin fight, has a slick style and busy jab that could present problems for Peter. "This is hardly a tune-up fight for Samuel," Duva continued. "Eddie Chambers is #3 in the IBF; Samuel is #5. The winner of this matchup will almost surely move very close to a mandatory title shot."

Having proclaimed his mission to bring excitement to heavyweight boxing since early in his career, Peter has never shied away from big matchups. In addition to facing both Klitschko brothers, "The Nigerian Nightmare" sought out James Toney and beat him (twice) and knocked out Oleg Maskaev to win the title.

"Samuel had a terrible night against Vitali and he's sworn to himself and his fans to make up for it by only taking meaningful fights against top opponents. Eddie Chambers has tremendous hand speed and technique and he makes for a very intriguing match. I commend Samuel for choosing to come back against one of the world's top contenders this way. Once again, the heavyweight division is looking to Samuel Peter to bring back the excitement and he intends on rewarding his loyal fans by regaining the title very soon."

"This is a very important fight for Samuel's career," admits Peter's manager Ivaylo Gotzev, "and a lot of experts call it a very dangerous fight for him coming back. After he proves them wrong, he will re-establish himself as one of the top heavyweights in the world. It's only a mater for time before he fights for the title again where he will prove what happened in Germany was a fluke."
