LONNIE SMITH IS READY TO FIGHT VINCENTE ESCOBEDO IN WOODLAND, CA THIS SATURDAY

Super-featherweight prospect “El Negro Mexicano” Lonnie Smith (14-2-2, 10 KOs) will face off against former world title challenger Vicente Escobedo (24-3, 14 KOs) on March 3rd in Woodland, CA for the WBO NABO Jr. Lightweight Title. The Smith vs. Escobedo bout is scheduled for ten rounds and will headline Telefutura’s Solo Boxeo Series (check local listings).

This is by far the most important fight in Lonnie Smith’s career. Even after a string of bout fall-outs, nothing deterred him from continuing to work hard in the gym. The 24 year old is excited and prepared for this opportunity.

“I’m a gym rat that doesn’t stop working.” Says Smith. “I have been focused and working very hard. This fight means everything.”

Smith is known for his action-packed fighting style. Although he promises to always deliver excitement in the ring, he is looking forward to showing boxing fans the improvements he has made in the gym.

“I hope that the people who have seen me fight before see the growth and maturity in my fighting style. I believe I have come a long way from just being a puncher. I am dedicated to improving my craft each fight.”

Smith lives in Las Vegas and trains with Skipper Kelp. Kelp is a former world-ranked welterweight, but has developed a reputation as a great boxing trainer.

Vicente Escobedo is a big step up in competition for Lonnie Smith. Along with facing Michael Kadsidis for the interim WBO world title in 2009, he went the distance against current interim WBO and interim WBA world titlist Robert Gurrero in 2010. In Escobedo’s last fight, he beat former world champion, Rocky Juarez.

To make Smith’s task even tougher, the upcoming fight is taking place at the Woodland Community Senior Center in Escobedo’s hometown. Smith remains confident, nonetheless.

LAMONT PETERSON VS. AMIR KHAN II IS SET FOR MAY 19!‏

For 12 rounds last December, Lamont "Havoc" Peterson and Amir "King" Khan battled it out in one of the most compelling championship bouts of 2011. When it was over, controversy raged over the officiating and the final judges' verdict, but in the end Peterson won a split decision capturing Khan's world championship belts. On Saturday, May 19, the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nev. will host the highly anticipated Unified Super Lightweight World Title rematch the boxing world has clamored for as Lamont Peterson will defend his WBA World Super Championship and IBF World Championshipagainst Khan in a fight televised live on HBO's World Championship Boxing.

Their first fight was a pitched and close battle waged in Peterson's hometown of Washington, DC that was considered by most boxing experts to be a "Fight of the Year" candidate. It was a classic battle of contrasting styles with Peterson brawling and banging while Khan used his lightning quick speed and boxing ability. The deduction of two points from Khan by the referee for a seldom-called foul (pushing) proved to be the difference in the outcome of the close fight, leading to questions being raised as to who actually deserved to win the decision. Khan immediately filed multiple protests following the fight, much to the ire of Peterson who felt Khan's actions tainted his victory and were an act of disrespect. On May 19, the fighters will have the opportunity to settle the score on neutral ground in Las Vegas.

"I feel really good about my decision," said Peterson (30-1-1, 15 KO's). "I went over every option available to me in terms of the fights that were on the table. I weighed each one of them looking at the pros and the cons and at the end of the day this is the one that made the most sense all the way across the board. I want everyone to know that, as champion, it has always been up to me what fight to take next. I was not persuaded by any of the controversy or anything else. I just can't wait to fight. I told Khan after the press conference when I won that if it was up to me I would fight him on Sunday, but I had to get with my team to look at every option that was out there. I just want to be clear that I never said I wouldn't fight him, but I wanted to take a look at everything that was out there before I made a decision. I'm happy with the terms of the fight. It's at a neutral site and, when I beat him this time, he won't have anything to complain about."

"I'm delighted that I have finally been given the chance to avenge the result of my last fight," said Khan (26-2, 18 KO's). "It's clear I wasn't happy with what went on in the previous fight, but that takes nothing away from how Lamont Peterson fought. He showed tremendous heart that night, but now I have the chance to prove once and for all that I'm the very best in the division. I'm going to take care of business inside the ring and this fight is going to be just as exciting as the last one. The only difference is going to be in the outcome."

2012 USA Boxing National Championships Preliminary Action Begins at Fort Carson‏

Action got underway at the 2012 USA Boxing National Championships on Sunday with preliminary action in six of the seven non-qualified weight divisions. Fort Carson’s Special Events Center is playing host to the event throughout the week and the tournament got off to a great start with a full day of boxing action.

The light welterweight, light heavyweight and super heavyweight classes enjoyed the stage in the day’s early session with 25 bouts of action in 11 a.m. action. Two of Fort Carson’s own enjoyed victories in their home ring on Monday afternoon. Light heavyweights Derae Crane (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and Jeffery Spencer (Colorado Springs, Colo.) both earned first round wins, defeating Joshua Balbuena (Symona, Ga.) and Brandon Larvadain respectively.

The evening session featured a full night of middleweight competition as well as contests in the lightweight and heavyweight divisions. Olympic Trials middleweight champion Jesse Hart (Philadelphia, Pa.) claimed his first win of the tournament with a 23-7 decision over John Magda (Rutherford, N.J.). 2011 USA Boxing National Championships bronze medalist D’Mitrius Ballard (Temple Hills, Md.) pulled out an 18-17 win over neighbor Marquis Moore (Fort Washington, Md.) in a hard fought contest. Hart and Ballard will face off in second round action on Tuesday. 2009 National Champion Terrell Gausha (Cleveland, Ohio) enjoyed a successful return to the USA Boxing National Championships, defeating Olympic Trials light heavyweight participant Caleb Plant (Ashland City, Tenn.), 18-16.

In heavyweight competition, 2010 USA Boxing Athlete of the Year opened his 2012 tournament with a convincing 18-4 win over Jas Phipps.

Monday’s action will feature second round competition in the two largest weight classes in the tournament – lightweight and light welterweight. The light welterweights will take the ring in the 11 a.m. session with the lightweights competing at 5 p.m. The middleweight, light heavyweight, heavyweight and super heavyweight divisions will return to the ring on Tuesday. The remaining men’s weight divisions and female brackets will be posted on Monday morning.

The Brackets are Drawn in Six Weight Divisions at the 2012 USA Boxing National Championships

The tournament brackets for the 2012 USA Boxing National Championships were drawn in six weight divisions on Saturday in preparation for Sunday’s action at the Fort Carson Special Events Center.

Due to the large number of registered athletes in the male lightweight, light welterweight, middleweight, light heavyweight, heavyweight and super heavyweight classes, an additional day of competition was added for those weight classes. The event draw for the remaining men’s weight divisions and the female weight classes will take place on Sunday.

The winners in the seven men’s unqualified weight divisions, which are the six weight classes being contested on Sunday as well as light flyweight, will advance to the final international Olympic qualifying tournament.

Heavyweight Explosion Feb. 25th in Allentown

Highly-regarded American heavyweight hopeful Travis Kauffman of Reading, PA. is recovering from his second consecutive surgery to correct a fracture in his right hand. The surgery took place this past Thursday and will sideline the 26-year-old for the next few months, leaving him unable to compete on King’s Promotions “Heavyweight Explosion” card at the Rodeway Inn in Allentown, PA on Saturday, February 25.

Kauffman (22-1, 17 KO), will have screws in his hand for the next 4-6 weeks, followed by physical therapy. He was advised by Dr. Culp of the Philadelphia Hand Institute that he won’t be able to punch for the next 3 months, but should be able to return to the ring before the end of the June after fighting just once in 2011.

“Heavyweight Explosion” will be headlined by crowd favorite William “Big Stuff” Miranda (4-4-1) of Allentown in a six-round contest against battle-tested David Williams (6-5-1, 2 KO) of Philadelphia.

In the six-round co-featured bout, junior middleweight Keenan Collins (13-7-2, 9 KO) of Reading, PA will face Julio Cesar Lanza (7-17-6, 1 KO) of Managua, Nicaragua. Collins, a native of York, PA, is looking to get back on track after a competitive decision loss to world-ranked Philadelphian Gabriel Rosado.

Also on the card, undefeated welterweight Grayson Blake (4-0, 1 KO) of State College, PA will meet Corey Preston (1-7) from North Carolina in a four-round bout. The 29-year-old Blake was a former national amateur standout and was a member of the Pennsylvania State University boxing team.

In other action, heavyweight Eric Newell (3-1,1 KO) of Bethlehem, PA will face debuting Randy Easton, plus junior lightweight Frank Santos De Alba (1-0-1, 1 KO) of Reading, PA meets Corey White (1-3, 1 KO) from Ohio in a four-round bout.

FERRANTE – SHEIKA CARD SET FOR THIS FRIDAY NIGHT AT HARRAHS IN CHESTER‏

This Friday Night, Tony “Boom Boom” Ferrante will take part in the most important bout of his career when he takes on former four time world title challenger Omar Sheika in a ten round bout for the BAM championship.

The bout plus a terrific five bout undercard is promoted by Joey Eye Boxing Promotions. This will be the sixth boxing show promoted by Joey Eye Boxing just over 12 months at Harrahs in Chester.

Ferrante of Philadelphia has a record of 12-2 with seven knockouts and is one of the most popular fighters in Philadelphia. Ferrante won his first nine professional bouts before dropping back to back bouts to Chuck Mussachio (15-1-2) and Ronson Frank (17-0).

Ferrante has responded with three consecutive victories, with two of those coming at Harrahs in Chester.

Ferrante is coming off a first round stoppage over Joe Park last August 12th at Harrahs in Chester.

Sheika of Paterson, New Jersey has been a mainstay at the top of the Super Middleweight and Light Heavyweight divisions for sixteen years. He won his first fourteen bouts and went on to beat former world champions Simon Brown and Glen Johnson.

Sheika challenged Joe Calzaghe, Eric Lucas; Jeff Lacy and Markus Beyer for world Super Middleweight supremacy but each time came up just a little bit short.

Sheika, 31-11 with twenty-one is coming off a majority decision victory over based Light heavyweight Charles Hayward on January 21st.

Two six round fights will headline the undercard.

Undefeated Naim Nelson of Philadelphia will take on the battle tested Linwood Hurd in a Jr. Welterweight bout.

Nelson, twenty-one years old has a record of 4-0 and holds victories over undefeated Korey Slone (1-0) and in his last bout he scored a four round unanimous decision over Pedro Andres on January 21st.

Hurd has a record of 3-2-4 with one knockout. The twenty-seven year old has fought and had success with solid competition. Hurd has wins over then undefeated Bryheim Douglas (2-0-2) and scored his first knockout in his last bout over Marcus Smith and has draws with then undefeated Ryan Belasco (2-0) and tough Julio DeJesus (4-2).

In a second six round Heavyweight bout, popular Radnor Police Officer Jamie Campbell takes on Lonnie Kornegay.

Campbell, thirty-eight has a record of 3-2 with two knockouts.

The Ridley Park, PA native lives just minutes from Harrahs in Chester and should have a big cheering section rooting him on.

Campbell has two big wins over Dan Mullarkey and will be looking to redeem himself after coming off a four round unanimous decision defeat to last minute replacement William Miranda last March 18th at Harrahs in Chester.

Kornegay is a thirty-three year old native of Baltimore will bring in a record of 1-5-2.

The irony of the fight is that Kornegay’s lone win is over Miranda (Miranda got even in the rematch).

The rest of the card will consists of three four round bouts.

Teneal Goyco (4-3, 2 KO’s) will take on Maurice Amaro (1-5) in a bout between two Philadelphia based Light Heavyweight bout.

Son of former world title challenger Tyrone Crawley Jr. will take on Hamid Robinson in a battle of pro debuting Welterweights from Philadelphia.

Danny Mills of Glen Mills, PA will take on Mike Haynes of Wilmington, DE in a fight between two pro debuting Welterweights.
