JuanMa Time in A.C.! Live on PPV, June 27!!!!‏TITLE BRAWLS AT BOARDWALK HALL HIGHLIGHT “LATIN FURY 9” PAY-PER-VIEW!

ATLANTIC CITY, NJ– World championship boxing monopolizes Atlantic City’s Boardwalk Hall on Saturday, June 27 with “Latin Fury 9!” The pay-per-view extravaganza will be headlined by two world championship fights -- World Boxing Organization (WBO) junior featherweight champion JUAN MANUEL “Juanma” LOPEZ defending his title against undefeated North America Boxing Association (NABA) super bantamweight champion OLIVIER LONTCHI and WBO bantamweight champion FERNANDO "Cochulito" MONTIEL defending his crown against former world champion ERIC "Little Hands of Steel" MOREL. The televised portion of the card also features former world champion PAULIE "The Magic Man" MALIGNAGGI taking on undefeated “Mile-High” MIKE ALVARADO in a 10-round junior welterweight rumble and VANES "The Nightmare" MARTIROSYAN risking his undefeated record against ANDREY TSURKAN in a 10-round junior middleweight battle. Promoted by Top Rank, in association with Caesars Atlantic City, “Latin Fury 9” will be broadcast Live on Pay-Per-View from the Adrian Phillips Ballroom, beginning at 9 p.m. EDT / 6 p.m. PDT. These eight sluggers boast a combined record of 224-10-2 (135 KOs), a winning percentage of 95% and a victory by knockout ratio of 60%!
“Call it the Perfect Storm because on June 27 Atlantic City’s Boardwalk Hall is going to be hit by a title wave,” said promoter Bob Arum. “Two world championship fights plus two more battles between top-rated contenders. Whether you see it in-person or live on pay-per-view, fans are in store for an action-packed night. Even though their fights are in Atlantic City, it’s not going to be walk on the beach for any of these fighters."

“Caesars is very excited to welcome these gladiators and their loyal fans to Atlantic City,” said Harrah's Entertainment Sports & Entertainment Consultant Ken Condon. “We are looking forward to what is sure to be another fabulous night of world championship boxing at Boardwalk Hall with these exciting match-ups."

Lopez (25-0, 23 KOs), from Caguas, Puerto Rico, returns to Atlantic City where he captured his world title, dethroning defending champion Daniel Ponce De Leon via a first-round knockout on June 7, 2008, ending De Leon’s three-year title reign, which had included seven successful defenses, five by knockout. Lopez has successfully defended his title three times since, all by knockout with only his most recent, against world champion Gerry Penalosa, going past the first round and stretching his victory by knockout streak to 13. He was named Puerto Rico’s 2008 “Fighter of the Year,” where he went 4-0 (3 KOs), including three first-round knockout world title victories. His professional resume boasts a victory by knockout percentage of 92% which explains why the average length of his fights is under four rounds.

Lontchi (18-0-2, 8 KOs), a native of Cameroon who fights out of Montréal, Québec, Canada, has promised to put up a Canadian cold front that will ice Lopez’s winning streak and title reign. A recent power surge has produced knockout victories in his last two fights, his most recent on April 4 when he successfully defended his NABA title with a seventh-round KO of Cecilio Santos. The former Canadian featherweight champion dropped down to 122-pound division in 2007 where he captured the vacant NABA and NABO titles winning a dominant 12-round unanimous decision over Cruz Carbajal. He has successfully defended the NABA title three times while advancing his world ratings where he had been ranked No. 3 by the World Boxing Association (WBA) and is currently No. 7 by the WBO.

Montiel (39-2-1, 29 KOs), from Los Mochis, Mexico, has captured four world titles in three different divisions. He returns to the ring in defense of his WBO bantamweight title, which he won in Tijuana on March 28 on “Latin Fury 8,” by knocking out Diego Silva in the third round. It was Montiel’s fifth consecutive world title knockout victory. Montiel, considered a crown jewel of Mexico boxing, captured his first world title in December 2000, knocking out defending WBO flyweight champion Isidro Garcia in the seventh round. He held the title through 2001, successfully defending it three times, before vacating it to dethrone undefeated WBO junior bantamweight champion Pedro Alcazar, whom Montiel knocked out in the sixth round of their June 2002 fight to claim his second world title in as many divisions. After losing the title to Mark Johnson via a majority decision one year later, Montiel reclaimed it in April 2005, stopping Ivan Hernandez in the seventh round. Montiel successfully defended that title seven times during his three-year reign before vacating it to claim the WBO interim bantamweight title.

Morel (41-2, 21 KOs), from San Juan, Puerto Rico, is the second half of this classic Mexico-Puerto Rico battle. With 50 knockout victories between Morel and Montiel, this has all the makings of a Pier Six Brawl!!! Morel captured the WBA flyweight title in 2000, winning a lopsided 12-round unanimous decision over undefeated defending champion Sornpichai Pisnurachank. He held the title for three years, successfully defending it five times against world-class competition with a combined record of 90-12-7 when he fought them, before losing it in a hotly contested defense to undefeated contender Lorenzo Parra in December 2003, a consequence of staying at flyweight too long. Since then, Morel has won eight of his last nine fights while collecting North American Boxing Organization (NABO) junior bantamweight and bantamweight titles. World-rated No. 1 by the WBO, Morel is ready to let his “Little Hands of Steel” fly when he faces Montiel on June 27.

Brooklyn’s own Malignaggi (26-2, 5 KOs), returns to the shores of Atlantic City for the first time since June 2008 where he successfully defended his International Boxing Federation (IBF) junior welterweight title for the first time, winning a unanimous decision over top-rated contender Herman Ngoudjo. Malignaggi, long a Big Apple favorite, captured the world title by dethroning defending IBF champion Lovemore N’dou with one of his best performances, producing a 12-round unanimous decision on scores of 120-106, 120-106 and 118-108. He successfully defended his title twice during his 17-month long reign, including a rematch with N’dou, before vacating it to face Ricky Hatton last November. The only blemishes on his resume have been world title losses to Hatton and Miguel Cotto. He returns to the ring fresh from an April 25 unanimous decision victory over Christopher Fernandez.

Alvarado (26-0, 18 KOs), from the mile-high city of Denver, CO., will be looking to make the most of his East Coast debut. Having knocked out eight of his last 10 opponents, the self-described boxer-puncher has finally broken into the Top-10, world-rated No. 8 by the IBF, No. 9 by the WBO and No. 10 by the WBA, based on his impressive victories over rugged opponents, including knockouts of former world champion Cesar Bazan and world-class contenders Michael Clark and Emmanuel Clottey. Malinaggi is by far the biggest test of Alvarado’s five-year professional career and a true barometer of where he stands in the junior welterweight division. He returns to ring after two impressive 2009 performances – a 10th-round knockout of Clottey on March 7, where he was leading on all three judges’ scorecards 90-80, and an eight-round unanimous decision over Jauquin Gallardo on May 2, again pitching a no-hitter with the judges scoring it 80-71, 80-71, and 79-72. In preparation for their fights against Gallardo and Hatton, Alvarado spent time at Freddie Roach’s Wild Card Boxing Club sparring with Manny Pacquiao.

Martirosyan (23-0, 14 KOs), a native of Armenia now living in Glendale, Calif., returns to the ring reunited with Hall of Fame trainer Freddie Roach and his assistant trainer former light heavyweight and heavyweight world champion Michael Moorer. Known as “The Nightmare,” the 2004 U.S. Olympian, whose amateur resume boasts victories over world champions Andre Berto and Timothy Bradley, is on the verge of breaking through professionally in the competitive junior middleweight division, where he is currently word-rated No. 12 by the IBF and No. 19 by the World Boxing Council (WBC).

Tsurkan (26-4, 17 KOs), a Ukrainian native now living in Bronx, NY, enters this fight having won seven of his last nine bouts, including NABF super welterweight championship knockout victories over Hector Camacho, Jr. and Sammy Sparkman. In his last bout, the rugged Tsurkan became the only fighter to extend undefeated No. 1 contender Alfredo Angulo beyond the sixth round, making it into the 10th stanza, which was broadcast by HBO.

Major to Face Clark for NABA Belt

WBA NABA Lightweight Championship on the line in Buffalo, June 19
Beatdown PosterPromoter Nick Garone and X-Cel Worldwide have put together an enticing championship bout for their "Buffalo Beatdown" show on June 19 at the Buffalo Niagara Convention Center in Buffalo, New York.

All-action lightweight Meacher Major "Pain" of the Bahamas will face Columbus, Ohio's Michael "Cold Blood" Clark (38-5-1, 18 KOs) in a 10-round battle for the vacant NABA Lightweight Championship.

Major turned himself into an instant fan favorite in Buffalo last February by becoming the first man to stop super-durable veteran Kevin Carmody in an exciting shootout. The skilful Clark has been on the cusp of a world title fight in the past and already fought to a draw for the same NABA belt in 2008.

Garone says although Clark is a dangerous opponent, he believes 27-year-old Major has the tools to become a world champion. "I don't feel like Meacher was brought along properly in the past. He's got a ton of potential. His losses are to Edner Cherry (via split decision), Lamont Peterson and Edgar Santana and they're all good fighters. And now that he's got proper training facilities and sparring, he's going to make a real dent in this division. I have enough confidence in Meacher to be putting him in with a world-class guy like Clark, so what's that tell you?"

At stake for both fighters will be the WBA's North American Championship and a bump up to the top-10 of their world rankings.

Also featured at the "Buffalo Beatdown" will be popular Niagara Falls, New York, super lightweight Nick "Hands of Gold" Casal (18-4-1, 14 KOs) in a 10-round match-up. On the undercard, Rochester super lightweight Kenny Abril, Buffalo light heavyweight Lionel Thompson and Buffalo heavyweight Excell Holmes (pro debut) will see action.

Garone brought professional boxing back to Downtown Buffalo for the first time in six years last February with a show that was surprisingly well attended and very well received by fans. The "Buffalo Beatdown" will be his third professional boxing show in Western New York in less than a year. "I know Buffalo loves boxing, so we're going to give them the world-class shows they deserve."

All undercard opponents for the "Buffalo Beatdown are, thus far, TBA.

See you at the Fights.

McCreedy’s bandwagon filling up fast;Joey “KO Kid” Spina vs. Tiwon Taylor headlines Friday night’s show at Twin River Event Center, RI

PROVIDENCE– Super middleweight “Irish” Joe McCreedy has developed into one of New England’s favorite fighters, based on support he’s received from his growing legion of passionate fans from Lowell, the same Massachusetts city that produced one of boxing’s all-time most popular ring warriors, “Irish” Micky Ward.

EBA super middleweight champion McCreedy (10-2-1, 5 KOs) is matched against veteran Willis “The Prophet” Lockett (11-7-5, 5 KOs) on Friday night’s (May 22) “Rage At The River” show, promoted by Jimmy Burchfield’s Classic Entertainment and Sports, Inc. (CES), at Twin River Event Center in Lincoln, Rhode Island.

McCreedy is as tough as any fighter, evident by his performances since his first loss. After starting out his career with victories in his first five pro bouts, Joe suffered his first lost in October of 2006 to Andre Hemphill. McCreedy’s jaw was broken early but he kept fighting until it was fractured in the second place, which resulted in the ending of the fight in the third round. Joe’s boxing career was in jeopardy but the former high school running back came back strong one a year and a half later to beat previously unbeaten Bay State rival Chris Traietti (7-0) by 6-round decision.

Two fights later, the now 24-year-old McCreedy lost a 6-round decision to Henry Mayes but Joe avenged that loss in his next fight, defeating Mayes by 6-round decision. A natural Irish-Italian, Massachusetts-Rhode Island throw-down was arranged between two CES boxers, McCreedy and Richard “Bobo the Bull” Starnino, last August in which the two fought non-stop, toe-to-toe to a 6-round draw. McCreedy then outclassed veteran Joe Johnson to set-up a rematch against Starnino this past February. In another fan-friendly brawl an even better conditioned McCreedy won an 8-round decision for the vacant Eastern Boxing Association title, much to the joy and delight of his many vociferous backers in the stands.

“Joe McCreedy is a brawler who fights like Vinny Paz and Micky Ward,” promoter Jimmy Burchfield said. “He gives fans their money’s worth every fight. He just keeps coming straight ahead and Joe’s very dangerous. I think he’s at the top of his game right now. His fan base is growing fast because he gives them what they enjoy. He’s fun to watch. There’s no such thing as a boring fight with Joe McCreedy.”

The 8-round main event puts world-rated light heavyweight Joey “KO Kid” Spina (24-1-1, 17 KOs), fighting out of Providence, against veteran Tiwon Taylor (26-14-1, 19 KOs), former Carolina Boxing Association title-holder, who has been in against world champions Adrian Diaconu, Fabrice Tiozzo and Lou Del Valle. Power-punching Spina is rated No. 12 in the WBA and WBC, No. 13 by the WBO and No. 15 by the IBF.

Middleweight James McGirt, Jr. (19-2-1, 9 KOs) makes his CES debut in a 6-round bout versus Patrtick “La Sasa” Perez (25-4, 14 KOs), while Ward works the corner for his nephew and another Lowell fighter, lightweight Sean Eklund (6-3, 1 KO), against Jose Guzman (3-4-1) in a 4-round match.

Also world featherweight title challenger Sandy “Lil’ Tyson” Tsagouris (9-1, 4 KOs) versus TBA in a 6-round bout, as well as supporting 4-round matches are Providence cruiserweight Jay Holland (1-0, 1 KO) vs. Chris “The Archbishop” Boykins (0-3), Pawtucket light welterweight Diego Periera (2-0, 2 KOs) vs. Melchor Guillen, Jr. (1-0) and Providence light welterweight Omar Pena (1-0-1, 0 KOs) vs. Omar Brito (1-1, 1 KO). All fights and fighters are subject to change.

Lashley bringing out “The Beast” in Sapp MMA PPV June 27in Biloxi, MS

BILOXI, Miss.– Styles make fights and the June 27th main event match-up between contrasting MMA fighters, kick-boxer Bob “The Beast” Sapp and wrestler Bobby Lashley, features a potential instant classic of pure entertainment on the “Ultimate Chaos” pay-per-view event live from the Mississippi Gulf Coast Coliseum in Biloxi, Mississippi.

The imposing 6-4, 350-pound Sapp (10-3-1), who played in the NFL for four years before becoming an iconic combat fighter in Japan, wants to brawl on his feet while the chiseled 6-3, 265-pound former WWE star Lashley (2-0), 3-time NCAA champion (1996-98) and 4-time All-America wrestler at Missouri Valley College, prefers to ground and pound.

“Ultimate Chaos,” presented by Prize Fight Promotions and Fight Force International, in association with the Mississippi Gulf Coast Coliseum, Treasure Bay Casino and Budweiser, is being produced and distributed by Gotham MMA and Integrated Sports at 9:00PM ET/6:00PM PT in the United States on cable and satellite via iNDemand, TVN and DirecTV for a suggested retail price of only $29.95.

Sapp starred as an offensive lineman on the University of Washington’s football team, winning the prestigious Morris Award, and he was selected in the third round of the NFL draft in 1997 by the Chicago Bears. Bob turned to pro wrestling after football and was later recruited by PRIDE in Japan, where his incredible size, strength and bull-rush style made him an instant fan favorite. He went on to star in K-1 as well as become an actor, playing roles in movies like The Longest Yard and Elektra.

“This fight is what fight fans want to see,” Sapp said. “It’s intriguing and will be very entertaining. Bobby is bringing ‘The Beast’ out in me- I want to brawl. I’m the last person to say I’m a submission artist. I want to box. I’m a brawler. I’m going to come at him with my long arms and legs, punching and kicking. He’s going to come strong at me, trying to take me off balance, but I’ll come back with a straight right knee to his jaw and follow with a left hook. He’s never been hit by anybody like me. He’s new on the MMA scene. Bobby’s more or less a grounder and pounder who wants to slam me and hold me down. He’ll throw in some elbows and maybe some new, slick MMA moves. What’s left?

“I’m a huge test for him, which says a lot about Bobby. He has no fear of getting cracked real hard. It could be a flash knockdown or an accumulation of punches, which does worse damage and is tougher to get over. Bobby’s powerful, his slams are strong and he does have some pro wrestling moves. But I’ll be faster than he imagines. If he wants to be a star in MMA, he needs a more entertaining style of fighting, one that I’ve built by career on. I’m more of an entertaining fighter than typical MMA guy.”

After graduating from Missouri Valley College, Lashley joined the U.S. Army and was a 2-time Armed Forces Champion and 2002 Military Games Championship silver medalist. Two years ago, Lashley became a WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment) superstar, joining Donald Trump at Wrestlemania 23 in a bet against WWE president

Vince McMahon, Lashley won the match and helped Trump shave McMahon’s head in the ring. Bobby made his MMA debut last December 13, stopping Joshua Franklin only 0.41 into the opening round, and March 21 he won a 3-round decision versus 37-fight veteran Jason Guida in Pensacola (FL).

“This fight is going to let fans in the U.S. know that Bob’s still around,” Sapp added. “I’ve been fighting for organizations all over the world, in a ring, not a cage. I want to go at it and make all my fights exciting. I’ll be training 20 days in a Judo center in Japan (for a DREAM show there in late May) and it’ll be the first time that I’m only training for an MMA fight – no movies, no television, just training everyday. It’s a great opportunity for me and American fans are going to see the real Beast.”

In a co-feature that could be the main event on most cards, former UFC title challenger and feared Brazilian striker, Pedro “The Rock” Rizzo (16-8-0), takes on controversial Dutch heavyweight Gilbert “The Hurricane” Yvel (35-13-3).

Dangerous lightweight Din “Dinyero” Thomas (24-8-0), star of The Ultimate Fighter 4, faces former KOTC and Gladiator Challenge champion Javier “Showtime” Vasquez; Canadian lightweight sensation Chris “The Polish Hammer” Horodecki (12-1-0) meets dangerous William “The Bull” Sriyapai (12-4-0).

Also fighting on the card are welterweights Brett Cooper (8-4-0) vs. Waachiim “Native Warrior” Spirit Wolf (5-4), Affliction vice president Tom Atencio (1-0) vs. lightweight Randy Hedderick, middleweight James Orso (3-2-0) vs. Colby McMahan (1-0-0), middleweight Danny Abbadi (3-4-0) vs. Lance Thomson (1-0-0), and welterweight Eric Bradley (2-1-0) vs. Colin McKee (3-2-0). No Holds Barred: Ricardo Liborio and Gary Abbott on Grappling, Wrestling, and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

No Holds Barred: Ricardo Liborio and Gary Abbott on Grappling, Wrestling, and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

http://nhbnews.podOmatic.com/entry/2009-05-13T23_43_40-07_00

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with two of the most important figures in the world of grappling, Ricardo Liborio and Gary Abbott.

Ricardo Liborio is a legend in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. A black belt under the late, great Carlson Gracie, in 1996 Ricardo was one of the first winners of the Mundial, the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu world championships, where he also was voted the most technical fighter. Besides being a Brazilian national champion in both jiu-jitsu and judo, he placed second in 2000 at the Abu Dhabi Combat Club (ADCC) Submission Wrestling World Championship (http://www.adcombat.net/adnet/Wrestling/) and third in 1999. He co-founded the Brazilian Top Team, and then became the founder and head instructor of the American Top Team (http://www.americantopteam.com/) in Coconut Creek, Florida, where he still is located. He was voted coach of the year by the North American Grappling Association (NAGA) (http://nagafighter.com/) in 2005, and is a member of the NAGA Grappling Hall of Fame. He is regarded as one of the top coaches of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, mixed martial arts, and grappling in the world. He will also be one of the many international guests at the May 23 Art of War Fighting Championship (http://mmachina.com) mixed martial arts card in Beijing, China.

After wrestling at Boston University, Gary Abbott has served for two decades at USA Wrestling (http://themat.com/), the national governing body for wrestling in the U.S. and a member of the U.S. Olympic Committee. He is the Director of Communications for USA Wrestling, and is one of the key people who is tirelessly working to popularize the sport of wrestling and striving to make sure it is more widely covered in the media.

Now these two noted people from these two different styles of grappling will be working together. Ricardo Liborio has been named the National Coach for USA Grappling, which is the grappling program of USA Wrestling. This is an important step forward in the cooperation between different styles of grappling, and represents an acknowledgement of the essential unity between all styles of grappling, as well as all styles of the combat sports.

It was thus a quite lively and informative discussion that we had for No Holds Barred. We spoke about the journey Ricardo had made from the worlds of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Vale Tudo in Brazil, to mixed martial arts, and now to USA Grappling. We discussed all these styles and rules. We stressed the connection of all these styles of grappling, and all the combat sports. We analyzed the prospects for grappling becoming an Olympic sport. And we discussed with Gary the 2009 U.S. World Team Trials, which take place May 30-31 in Council Bluffs, Iowa, to determine the U.S. world teams for men's and women's freestyle wrestling and for Greco-Roman wrestling.

In addition, the 2009 Grappling World Championships will take place in the U.S., at the Fort Lauderdale/Broward County Convention Center, Dec. 12-13. We discussed the importance of this international event being held in U.S.

Meet the new “KO Kid” Spina Headlining “Rage At The River” May 22 in Rhode Island

PROVIDENCE– World rated light heavyweight Joey “KO Kid” Spina has had an overall attitude adjustment but he still possess the same devastating power punching ability as always as he gets set to headline the May 22nd “Rage At The River” show at Twin River Event Center in Lincoln, Rhode Island.

Spina (24-1-1, 17 KOs), 31, is rated among the top 15 in all four major boxing organizations – No. 12 by the WBC and WBA, No. 13 by the WBO, and No. 15 by the IBF.

The rugged Italian-American from Providence, former IBF Inter-Continental and USNBC super middleweight champion, has won four straight since suffering his only pro loss in 2006 to cross-town rival, Peter Manfredo, Jr., in which, Spina suffered a broken left thumb in the early goings. Joey, admittedly, hasn’t been fully focused since then but he has a refreshing new look on life and boxing, which has resulted in a born-again dedication aimed at fully preparing him for a world title shot in the not too distant future.

Prior to his fight against Manfredo, Spina had been on a roll having defeated former world champion Carl Daniels, veteran Anwar Oshana and then, in his career-defining fight to date, stopping Jesse Brinkley with a single body punch in the 11th round of their 2006 throw-down on ESPN that Joey was trailing in.

“I’ve been discouraged since the Manfredo fight,” Spina said. “I’ve been focused, only off and on, but I’m ready now for a big fight at 175, or I can get down top 168 for the right opportunity. I’m a fighter; I knockout guys. I was disappointed in my last fight (WTKO1vs. Matt Gockel) because I wanted to knock him out cold, not hurt him, but put him to sleep. The referee stopped the fight before I could. I’m not looking past my next fight (May 22 vs. 26-14-1, 19 KOs Tiwon Taylor in a scheduled 8-rounder) but, after that one, I want a few good fights and then a title shot. I’d want to get Jaidon Codrington in the ring. I’ll expose him more than (Sakio) Bika did. And I’d like a title shot against (Carl) Froch, a good fighter and tough guy like me. A few more fights and I’ll be ready for him.”

Spina, who is promoted by Jimmy Burchfield’s Classic Entertainment and Sports, Inc., has a new manager, Eddie Imondi, who managed Ron Sandler and Dino Dennis, as well as promoted several world title fights. “I’ve known Joey since he was a kid and I believe he has the potential to be world champion,” Imondi remarked. “He can punch and has a good record with only one loss. Joey’s training real hard for this fight. I told him a fighter only has a short career and that I’d take care of the business end for him. He’s listening to me and making adjustments. We have a very good relationship. Boxing is in my blood and I love it. I’ve also known Jimmy Burchfield all of my life. I’ve followed Joey’s career and when I heard that he was looking for a new manager, I took over his contract.”

Spina appreciates Imondi’s support and welcomed him into his corner. “Eddie used to promote and he brought a few guys to world title fights,” Joey added. “His background is the big reason I signed with him. I have two great trainers, Eddie Mustpha Muhammad will be back working my corner with Jose Santos, and I know that I can punch with anybody. I’m starting to box better, too. The guy I’m fighting (Taylor) is a cute fighter with a good right. I’m going to be aggressive but slip and slide, move my head more. He’s going to looking for my big left hook, but I’m going to drop him with my right. I’m more confident now in my right than my left hook. I’m going to break him down.”

Burchfield’s belief in Joey hasn’t wavered since day one when Spina turned pro with CES in 2001, despite the fighter’s somewhat up-and-down career, in and out of the ring. “There’s a new Joey Spina,” Burchfield claimed. “He’s always had talent but now Joey has a new team to take care of his business with me. It’s like family. I want all of my fighters to be as comfortable as possible so all they have to do is just concentrate on boxing. They need to be supported by quality people – managers, nutritionists, strength and conditioning coaches, and better sparring partners. I see great things for Joey. He’s one of the hardest punchers in boxing and all he needs is to be 100-percent focused.”

Tickets for “Rage At the River” range from $25.00 to $150.00. To purchase tickets or for more information about Spina, “Rage At The River” or CES call 401.724.2253/2254 or visit www.cesboxing.com.

TERON TO MAKE STAR BOXING DEBUT ON ESPN2 FRIDAY NIGHT FIGHTS

On May 15th, Jorge "The Truth" Teron (22-1-1, 15KO's) will be out for revenge when he makes his debut under the Star Boxing banner at Harrah's Resort in Atlantic, City, NJ. Teron will be taking on Aldo "El Pato" Valtierra (25-10, 13KO) in a rematch of their highly entertaining bout back in December 2008. Teron- Valtierra II will be showcased live as the co-feature bout of the evening on ESPN2's "Friday Night Fights".

On December 4th Teron, who is now co-promoted by Star Boxing and Hirsch-Borao Promotions, dropped a highly competitive and controversial ten round majority decision to the very dangerous Valtierra. Many ringside observers felt that Teron did more than enough to win a decision, but unfortunately the judges felt different. Rather than take an easy tune-up fight to get back into the win column, Teron, being the fighter he is, has opted to go right at Valtierra again. A win against Valtierra on the nationally televised Friday Night Fights will not only give Teron the revenge he so eagerly desires, but will land him right into the mix in the exciting lightweight division.

"I can't express enough how excited I am to be getting this opportunity to get my revenge against Valtierra," stated a determined Teron. "After the first fight I was sitting in my dressing room begging for a rematch, and now it's only a few days away and I can't wait. I'm not going to make any excuses for the first fight, for whatever reason I just couldn't get off like I wanted, but that being said I still know I won the fight. Anyone you ask who was there says I won the fight. Rather then dwell on the past though I have used that fight as a learning experience and have grown from it. I am hungrier then ever right now I can promise you that you will see the real Jorge Teron on May 15th."

Regarding signing with DeGuardia, Teron couldn't be happier. "I am very happy to be with Joe (Star Boxing) now. He is one of the top promoters in the industry and I know he will be able take me to the next level. I am looking forward to staying very active and representing the Star Boxing banner in tremendous fashion. I can't wait to get into the ring on the 15th and put on an impressive showing for all my fans who have stood by me and supported me throughout my entire career."

"We are very pleased to have Jorge as a major part of the Star Boxing roster," stated Joe DeGuardia, CEO and President of Star Boxing. "Jorge has all the skills and ability to be a complete terror in the lightweight division, and his path to stardom starts on May 15th."

See you at the Fights.

No Holds Barred: Andre Berto, Juan Urango, Evangelista Cotto, Light Heavyweight Logjam in Boxing

No Holds Barred: Andre Berto, Juan Urango, Evangelista Cotto, Light Heavyweight Logjam in Boxing

http://nhbnews.podOmatic.com/entry/2009-05-10T13_26_14-07_00

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman begins by outlining the history leading up to the present logjam in boxing's storied light heavyweight division. While IBF light heavyweight champion Chad Dawson remained unbeaten this past Saturday night, May 9, by winning a unanimous decision in his rematch with Antonio Tarver, his performance failed to win many accolades or lay the groundwork for a fight with other top light heavyweights such as Bernard Hopkins or Glen Johnson. Once again, boxing's politics have driven this division into the quicksand.

On May 30, one of the rising stars of the welterweight division, 25-year-old WBC champion Andre Berto (24-0, 19 KOs), will defend his belt against the 28-year-old reigning IBF junior welterweight champion, Juan Urango (21-1-1, 16 KOs). This fight will take place in the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, Florida, and be shown live in the U.S. on HBO.

At a recent prefight news conference at the new Yankee Stadium, we had a chance to discuss this fight with Andre Berto, Juan Urango, and Urango's trainer, Evangelista Cotto. You can hear that all right here on No Holds Barred.

Mitchell Not Deterred by Loss

Former two-time world champion Byron "Gator" Mitchell says his comeback won't be derailed by one setback.

Mitchell took a short-notice chance at a quick bump in the world ratings and paid for it over the weekend by suffering his fifth career loss to undefeated Kazakhstan native Beibut Shumenov at the Stadium Khadjimukan in Chimkent, Kazakhstan, via TKO 4.

"We weren't really in the gym, but we got the call and decided to give it a shot," explained the disappointed Mitchell, who took the Shumenov matchup on 48 hours notice, flew 27 hours and landed on the day of the fight at 9 am.

To compound his disadvantages, Mitchell was then forced to drop some weight pre-fight.

"I take nothing away from this kid Shumenov, he fought well. But that wasn't the real Gator in there. I'd like to face him again under more even circumstances."

Mitchell's promoter, Nick Garone of X-Cel Worldwide, says although the entire team knew the odds they were up against, the opportunity to fight for the International Boxing Association, WBO Asia Pacific, WBC Asian Boxing Council and interim PABA light heavyweight championships in one fight was too good of an opportunity to pass up.

"We knew going in it was a steep hill to climb, but a loss like this is explainable and doesn't affect our future plans with Byron. He still has his NABA-US title and he'll be back."

See you at the Fights.

Get discovered and become the next MMA superstar

LAS VEGAS– The revolutionary www.fightengine.com state-of-the-art website is changing the way mixed-martial-arts fighters – professionals, amateurs and even neighborhood tough guys -- market themselves and develop strong fan bases.

Even fighters that don’t want to fight on a FightEngine.com scouting event (see below) can use the popular web site as a marketing tool to keep their names out in front of the public.

FightEngine.com works with MMA fighters to gain International notoriety. Registered fighters from around the world, whether a veteran or novice, may post his or her video and challenge other registered fighters, allowing each participant to accept or deny challenges, as well as express their semi-uncensored opinions about any posted challenges.

Equally valuable, however, is the opportunity for MMA fighters from around the world, even those under contract and prohibited from participating in Fight Engine’s “super card,” can still use the web site as a marketing tool to get an edge on the opposition and build fans bases. Smack talk is allowed, challenges encouraged, and the Babes of Fight Engine constantly drive traffic to the site.

Even fighters contractually prohibited from fighting in the FightEngine.com event can benefit from posting action videos instead of forcing fans to work their way through and around You Tube. Registered fighters may gauge their popularity through one web site, at one location, through www.FightEngine.com and its fan feedbacks.

Fighters and promoters from a wide variety of MMA organizations worldwide – USA (UFC, King of the Cage, Grappler’s Quest, HD Net Fights, Strikeforce), China (Art of War), Abu Dahbi (ADCC) Japan (K-1) and Russia (M-1 Global) – can pool their resources for the overall benefit of the sport.

Promoters and managers have a brand new way to scout talent and fans become real matchmakers, publicly criticizing video-posted fighters as well as arguing with other fans regarding which fighters they want matched against each other.

A non-discriminatory source providing male and female fighters, as well as ring girls, FightEngine.com offers opportunities to gain invaluable exposure on its popular website. Promoters and managers have started closely monitoring fightengine.com to scout and discover their next street fighting prospects.

Fightengine.com also offers a unique opportunity for some selected MMA fighters to earn a guaranteed five-figure purse, sign a potential six-figure promotional contract, paid travel expenses and, in the not too distant future, hopefully, other life-changing benefits through membership.

Fans can get in on the action simply by registering on the website to become quasi-matchmakers, picking fighters they’d like to watch in matches, in addition to commenting about fights other spectators propose.

A thermometer can be found on the right-hand side of the website, which will illuminate on a rising basis, according to the amount of registered fighters, and subsequently fights will be arranged when the thermometer reaches its apex.

Registered fighters on the FightEngine.com website can be scouted by some of the world’s top MMA promoters in addition to competing for an opportunity to fight on a super card guaranteeing purses of $10,000, $25,000, $50,000 and $100,000.

Future plans include a “KO the Pro” section where a top level fighter will be posted as other fighters vie for selection in a “KO the Pro” match-up. The first “KO The Pro” is living legend Bob “The Beast” Sapp, one of the key advisors for www.fightengine.com.

See you at the Fights.

Shumenov’s opponent Saturday night in Kazakhstan

Byron Mitchell replaces Berrio as
LAS VEGAS – Former two-time world champion Byron “Slama from Bama” Mitchell has replaced Alejandro “Naco” Berrio as light heavyweight sensation Beibut Shumenov’s opponent, Saturday night in the main event on an all-star card, outdoors at Khadkimukan Stadium in Shumenov’s hometown of Chimkent, Kazakhstan. Berrio had visa issues in Colombia.

Saturday’s show (May 9), presented by KZ Event Productions, owned by the Shumenov brothers, Beibut and Chingis, will be taped live for later broadcasts in North America.

2004 Kazakhstan Olympian Shumenov (7-0, 5 KOs), 2008 WBC Asian Boxing Council Organization’s Boxer of the Year, is already rated No. 8 by the WBA, No. 9 by the WBO and No. 16 by the WBC. His WBO Asia Pacific, WBC Asian Boxing Council and PABA Interim titles will all be on the line, as well as the vacant IBA world crown, against present NABA USA light heavyweight champion Mitchell (27-4-1, 20 KOs).

Reigning NABA USA title-holder Mitchell first captured the WBA super middleweight belt in 1999, stopping defending champion Frankie Liles in the 11th round. Byron, 1999 Ntional Golden Gloves middleweight champion, recaptured the WBA crown in 2001 via a 12th round knockout of Manny Siaca. Two successful title defenses followed against Siaca (DEC12) and Julio Cesar Green (TKO4). All four of Mitchell’s four career losses have been to world champions – Joe Calzaghe, Sven Ottke, Bruno Girard and Richard Hall.

“Although we’re disappointed Beibut won’t be fighting Berrio as planned,” Chingis Shumenov said, “we’re excited that Mitchell accepted our offer to fight him in the main event. We’ve been targeting Mitchell, who is a world-class fighter that’s fought some of the biggest names in boxing.”

Former IBF light middleweight Roman “Made In Hell” Karmazin will fight at home for the first time in seven years against Luis “Tyson” Augusto Dos Santos (24-15, 20 KOs) in the 10-round co-feature. Born in Russia, reigning NABF middleweight title-holder Karmazin (38-3-1, 24 KOs), rated No. 5 by the IBF and No. 10 by the WBC, was stationed in the military and later lived in Uralsk, Kazakhstan, where his son, Oleg, still resides and studies.

KO Artist Brunson Signs with Triple-Mac‏

Virginia-based Triple-Mac Promotions is proud to announce the signing of powerhouse Philadelphia middleweight Tyrone "Young Gun" Brunson to a promotional agreement.

The sharpshooting Brunson (19-0-1, 19 KOs) set a boxing record with 19 consecutive first-round knockouts to begin his career before fighting to a draw in his last outing.

"Tyrone was beginning to go stale by chasing that record and not facing the kind of opposition he should have been to develop properly," said Triple-Mac President Freddie Mac of his new client. "We believe in Tyrone and we intend to bring him to the top levels of the sport properly. He has the talent and the natural punching power to become a world champion."

24-year-old Brunson surpassed the North American record with his 15th first-round stoppage (vs. David Johnson, March 9, 2007) and tied the world record of 18 set by current WBC Lightweight Champion Edwin Valero of Venezuela - in June of last year against Jamie Waru in Auckland, New Zealand. He then broke the all-time record in 72 seconds against Francis McKechnai on March 29, 2008.

Brunson is the first big signing for Triple-Mac who have established a respected reputation doing shows in the Norfolk area. "We are ready to make a dent in boxing by treating our fighters right and giving our fans the quality of fights they don't mind paying to see. Tyrone will be our first world champion and will clear the way at the top for a long line of Triple-Mac fighters.

See you at the Fights.
