Russia to Face Freestyle USA Olympic Wrestling Team in Times Square in New York City on June 7 in Pre-London Tuneup

Russia to Face Freestyle USA Olympic Wrestling Team in Times Square in New York City on June 7 in Pre-London Tuneup
"The Grapple In The Apple" Puts Reigning World Team champions against Americas London 2012 hopefuls for second straight year at “Crossroads of the World”

USA Wrestling and Beat the Streets Wrestling, Inc. has announced that a team of talented athletes from World champion Russia will face the U.S. Olympians who will represent our nation in the London Games in Duffy Square in New York’s Times Square on Thursday, June 7.

This major international freestyle wrestling match, billed as “The Grapple in the Big Apple,” will be the featured competition for the 2012 Beat the Streets Gala and Benefit, which will be held following the dual meet at Roseland Ballroom. Included in the Gala is the Beat the Streets Reception and Awards Ceremony.

This is the second straight year that Team USA has battled Russia as part of the Beat the Streets Gala in Times Square. In 2011, the United States defeated World champion Russia, 5-2, in a dual meet there. It was the first sports event ever held in historic Times Square, and thousands of fans packed the area to see history in the making.

The Russian lineup for the Beat the Streets Gala has not yet been finalized. The final roster will be provided to USA Wrestling at the conclusion of the Russian National Wrestling Championships next week.

The U.S. team for the dual meet has been determined. It will feature six of the athletes who earned spots on the men’s freestyle team for the London Games with victories at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials in Iowa City, Iowa, April 21-22.

Included on the U.S. roster are four past World medalists:

2011 World champion Jordan Burroughs at 74 kg/163 lbs.
2009 World silver medalist Jake Herbert at 84 kg/185 lbs.
2009 World bronze medalist Tervel Dlagnev at 120 kg/264.5 lbs.
2011 World bronze medalist Jake Varner at 96 kg/211.5 lbs.

Burroughs will have significant local interest, as he is a native of Sicklerville, N.J., where he was a New Jersey state champion for Winslow Township High School in 2006.

The other two athletes who will compete for Team USA in London, Sam Hazewinkel at 55 kg/121 lbs. and Jared Frayer at 66 kg/145.5 lbs., will also wrestle on the U.S. team in Times Square.

The U.S. Olympian at 60 kg/132 lbs. has not yet been determined. A Special Wrestle-off for the spot between Shawn Bunch, Reece Humphrey and Coleman Scott will be held at a date and location to be announced shortly.

Competing in the Beat the Streets dual meet at 60 kg/132 lbs. will be Logan Stieber, a 2011 NCAA champion for Ohio State who placed second behind Scott at the 2012 U.S. Olympic Team Trials in Iowa City.

“Anytime you wrestle the Russians, you have to be ready. They are very good, very deep and you can’t look past anyone. We are just coming off of the Freestyle World Cup, and we need our Olympians to compete again. But this is not just about preparation for the Olympic Games. It is an important match that has been on our schedule and we are looking to win,” said National Freestyle Coach Zeke Jones.

Coach Jones sees the Grapple in the Big Apple as another step forward for the athletes and the men’s freestyle national program.

“At the World Cup, the great thing is that we got to gel as a team. These guys like each other, will fight for each other and want to make the USA the best nation in the world. We came together as a team. We learned a lot about ourselves at the World Cup. We are now working in tactical and technical areas, and in our training camp next week will work on those areas of concentration,” said Jones.

The USA vs. Russia event is free to the public, and will be shown on the largest single-faced LED screen in Times Square. A television partner for the event will be announced shortly.

This is the third straight year in which a major Olympic-style competition has been featured as part of the Beat the Streets Gala.

In 2010, an all-star challenge featuring top U.S. wrestlers was held on the USS Intrepid, an aircraft carrier docked on the west side of Manhattan. Competition was in all three Olympic styles and featured numerous U.S. World Team members and national champions.

Once again this year, a card of exhibition matches will be held in Duffy Square, featuring Beat the Streets athletes from middle schools as well as from the Public School Athletic League.

A complete schedule of events will be announced shortly.

Byarm: “This is my shot at redemption”

Like most professional boxers, heavyweight Maurice “Freight Train” Byarm never thought about what it’d be like to lose.
The Washington, DC based Philadelphian stopped 9 of his first 13 opponents and was named one of the best prospects in the beltway region. Still, Byarm, who had less than 15 amateur fights, was learning on the job. Between his work ethic and sparring quality fighters such as Tony Thompson, Byarm made notable improvements with every fight. In his final bout of 2011, the crowd-pleasing 29-year-old stopped veteran Clinton Boldridge in 74 seconds and planned to step up the competition.
Earlier this year, Byarm got his opportunity; albeit under far different circumstances than he imagined.
On January 21 before a nationally televised audience on the NBC Sports Network, Byarm dropped a competitive decision to fellow American heavyweight Bryant Jennings in a bout that both men took on five days notice. The loss was unexpected, but he considered it a learning experience.
“The Jennings fight taught me that I had to be more patient and stick to my game plan,” said Byarm. “I wanted to impose my will on him but his defense and movement were very good and I didn’t make the adjustments my team discussed.”
Luckily, Byarm can prove that he’s amongst America’s top heavyweights when he challenges highly touted Magomed Abdusalamov at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, NV Friday, July 6 on ESPN 2’s Friday Night Fights. Like Jennings, Abdusalamov is yet to taste defeat, winning all 14 of his bouts by knockout. The 6’3 Russian’s last three opponents were a combined 34-1 and his most recent victory, a four round destruction of previously unbeaten Jason Pettaway, earned him the WBC USNBC title.
“He’s a decent fighter but I’ve seen a lot of flaws,” Byarm said of Abdusalamov. “I’m going to fight my fight and we’ve got a good game plan this time around. His record and knockouts don’t’ mean much to me because he hasn’t fought anybody of my caliber. He has punching power but I have punching power too. I know my will to win this fight is much higher than his. This will be my shot to show the world what I truly have to offer!”
The 10-round southpaw showdown between Byarm and Abdusalamov is promoted by Greg Cohen Promotions and Sampson Boxing.

Important Statement From The President Of The Malta Boxing Commission

Whilst the world wide media have been focused on the issues surrounding
the proposed Dereck Chisora versus David Haye in London on July 14th,
elsewhere in the World a not too dissimilar scenario has been unfolding on
the Islands of Malta.

Unlike in the case of Dereck Chisora or David Haye, where no criminal
charges have been instigated, former Commonwealth Champion Scott Dixon,
the subject of the drama unfolding in Malta, has been on bail since 2009
awaiting trial for the alleged importation and distribution of narcotics.

On receiving news that Mr. Dixon has been arrested for breaking his bail
conditions, Alexander Zammit, President of the Malta Boxing Commission,
today issued the following statement:

“The incorrigible former commonwealth boxing champ, Scott Dixon, is back
behind bars. Information supplied to the office of the Malta Boxing
Commission indicates that Dixon was arrested for breaking his bail
conditions.

Unconfirmed sources also informed us that Dixon's bail bond was withdrawn
before he was re-arrested.

Dixon is presently in Malta (where he has resided since 2005) awaiting
trial in connection over the alleged importation and attempted
distribution of around 500 Kilos of cannabis or resin cannabis, since
2009. He was eventually given provisional liberty against a bail bond of
over 30,000 Euros.

Hours before Dixon was arrested early on Saturday morning (19 May, 2012),
he was acting as a corner-man for the organisers of Malta's 'Prize Boxer',
an eight-men unsanctioned boxing tournament based on the 'Prize Fighter'
concept.

Sources at ringside place Dixon at the tournament into the early hours of
Saturday morning (from Friday night), well beyond the parameters
established in his bail conditions by the local courts.

This latest episode in the Dixon saga may have put paid to Dixon's
comeback plans. According to the German based 'World Boxing Union' Scott
Dixon was to take on Baker Barakat (champion) for his WBU
super-middleweight title on the 18th August in Pembroke, Malta.

Sources from within the WBU confirm that this bout is being sanctioned by
the German Boxing Board (BDB).

On the other hand - The BDB are presently condemning very strongly and
labeling as controversial a contest between David Haye and Dereck Chisora
at West Ham on July 14, sanctioned by the Luxembourg Boxing Federation
(LBF).

Just as Chisora and Haye do not hold a valid license with the BBBofC or
the BDB - neither does Scott Dixon hold a boxing license with the Malta
Boxing Commission (MBC). As a matter of fact he was refused a license by
the MBC until such time as the Maltese authorities either declared him
innocent of the charges against him or such charges are dropped.

Yet the BDB (according to the WBU) saw fit to sanction this Malta show and
one has to assume that if this show were to happen this would also be done
under a German Boxing License as Dixon's license was suspended by the
BBBofC before he took up residence in Malta.

Is this a case of two weights and two measures? - The BDB should never
have sanctioned an event involving Scott Dixon, especially since this is
being held in Malta.

In my opinion the proposed Barakat - Dixon fight is much more condemnable
than the Haye - Chisora fight.

If the Luxembourg Boxing Federation is to be condemned for supplying the
legality for the Haye - Chisora proposed fight, the Germans should also,
at the very least, be equally condemned over the Barakat - Dixon scheduled
fight.

Benjamin Franklin wrote, 'Don't throw stones at your neighbours', if your
own windows are glass.'”

Bob Duffy's Ring Promotions Brings a Night of Full Ko's to Plattduetsche Park Restaurant Franklin Square, New York

On a fight card promoted as "Bombs Away Long Island" despite losing it's main event when unbeaten light heavyweight Ronson Frank's opponent couldn't make weight and undefeated Long Island banger Cletus Seldin's opponent had his own problems but the Bob Duffy Ring Promotions card done in association with Winner Takes All Productions still filled the bill.

Being bumped up into the main event Mastic, Shirley Long Island light heavyweight Joe "The Irish Bomber" Smith Jr. continued his heavy handed ways recording his third straight stoppage disposing off Akron, Ohio's rugged James Denson in the opening stanza of their scheduled six rounder.

Smith, trained by the fighting Capobianco brother's Phil and Gerry used a patient approach setting up the shorter Denson with drilling jabs adding a looping right around Denson's high guard backing him to the corner for a volley of brutal power shots to both sides, up and down prompting referee Arthur Mercante Jr. to call it at 1:54 of round one.

Smith holding dynamite in both hands and always finding it hard to find opponents climbs to 10-1, 10Ko's with his only defeat coming after fighting almost three full rounds with a severely fractured jaw back August 2010. Denson drops to 5-9, 2Ko's.

In the co-feature Long Beach, Long Island unbeaten southpaw lightweight Michael "Lefty" Brooks held onto his zero tracking down Toledo, Ohio's roaming"Gladiator" Calvin Pritchard in the second round with drilling a well placed left to Pritchards midsection depositing him on the canvas for good at 2:59 of the second round.

Brooks who won a unanimous four round decision over Pritchard in their first meeting September 2010 advances to 7-0, 2Ko's while the winless Pritchard falls to 0-6.

Opening the action Queens, NY's featherweight Trevis Hall measured Brooklyn's debuting Nieem Harris in round one of their scheduled four rounder with long jabs until backing him to the ropes in round two for a well timed left hook to the temple right hand to the throat ending the action at 1:45 of round two. Hall improves to 201, 1Ko leaving Harris still in search of his first pro victory.

Garden City, NY welterweight Rich "Kid Brazil" Neves fought through the clutching grabbing style of Guyama, Puerto Rico's Jose Angel Ortiz finally breaking through with a drilling body shot dropping him to a knee ending the action at 0:57 of round four.

Fort Worth Texas 21 year old unbeaten light middleweight Skender Halili now fighting out of the Bronx, NY remained perfect stopping Tampa, Florida southpawBrian Meadows in two. Halili starting behind an educated jab floored Meadows with a clean lead right in round one methodically broke Meadows down with a concentrated body attack closing the show with a thudding left hook to the body at 1:31 of round two. Hali stays perfect at 5-0, 5Ko's as Meadows drops to 0-3-2.

Bellport, Long Island' cruiserweight Adam Willett returned to his winning ways quickly solving then disposing of Brooklyn, NY's unorthodox and overmatched late replacement Justin Warren with a heavy looping left at 1:40 of round one. Willett advances to 3-1-1, 1Ko as Warren dropping his hard matched pro debut heads back to the gym at 0-1.

Hicksville, Long Island amateur star welterweight Anthony Karparis converted his pro debut with a one sided pounding of Muskegon, Michigan's Cody "The Ghost" Osborne. The well tanned and conditioned Long Islander started fast using his superior speed and power softening up "The Ghost" with driving body shots then closing the show with a thunderous counter right at 2:14 of round one. Karparis off to a solid start at 1-0, 1Ko leaves Osborne winless at 0-2.

Victor Conte statement about Andre Berto's positive drug test

Victor Conte statement about Andre Berto's positive drug test

I had absolutely nothing to do Andre Berto's positive drug test for nandrolone.

Andre enrolled in the VADA drug testing program in early 2012. While using my nutritional products and protocols Andre's blood and urine were randomly tested twice before his recent bicep injury and all tests were negative. After his positive test was revealed, Andre admitted that he recently took some supplements that were not provided by me and did so without my knowledge. It is possible that one these supplements was contaminated with trace amounts of nandrolone and caused his positive test result. My understanding is that an investigation is being conducted in an attempt to determine the culprit. I was the person who encouraged Andre to enroll in the VADA program and I will continue to encourage athletes to do so. There have been hundreds of nandrolone positive drug tests in the past that I believe were a result of contaminated supplements. Nandrolone is the longest lasting anabolic steroid known to man and therefore it is unlikely that any elite athlete would ever use it in and attempt to cheat. However, the strict liability rule makes an athlete responsible for whatever is in their body regardless of how it got there. I do my best to help athletes to make good choices, but unfortunately they do not always listen to my advice.

On Saturday night June 2nd at the Aviator Sports Complex in Brooklyn, Sadam Worldkid” Ali will take on Franklin Gonzalez in a scheduled ten round Welterweight bout that will be the main event of a big night of boxing that is promoted by Ali’s Worldkid Promotions.

This will be the 2008 U.S. Olympian’s Promotional debut.

Gonzalez of the Dominican Republic has a record of 15-9 with ten knockouts.
