Junior welterweight Maurcio "El Maestro" Herrera Q & A‏

This Thursday, May 2nd, Thompson Boxing Promotions and Banner Promotions will present a special night of boxing that will emanate from Corona, California and be televised on ESPN "Friday Night Fights".  The special edition of boxing will feature Riverside's Mauricio "El Maestro" Herrera (18-3, 7KOs) versus South Korea's Ji-Hoon "The Volcano" Kim (24-8, 18KOs) in a 10-round junior welterweight bout.

Herrera, whose record recently suffered two losses in a row, looks to set the record straight as it relates to his boxing abilities.

Read below to see what Mauricio Herrera had to say about his upcoming match against Ji-Hoon Kim.

Q:            How has training been going?

A:            Training has been going well.  Before this fight was offered to me I was in decent shape.  I
had been staying in the gym and sparring with Omar Figueroa and Timothy Bradley, so I
was really well conditioned to start training for a fight.

Q:            How has camp been going for this particular fight?

A:             I am doing really good in my training camp.   I have been sparring a lot with different
fighters and mixing it up with all of them. A couple of my sparring partners have
been Hector Serrano and Freddy Hernandez.

Q:            What have you done differently in training to prepare for Kim?

A:            I have been using my basic style in training that has been working for me.  In my last two
fights I was listening to too many people in the gym.  Everyone pushed me to be more
aggressive and hit harder.  But it wasn't me.  I gave it a try and it didn't work.  The one
thing I am doing different from my last two training camps is that I am fighting the way I
know how, using my boxing ability, using my jab a lot more and making sure that I
               don't get hit as much.

Q:            You are coming off two losses.  Where do you see your career at this point? What
                does
this fight mean to you?

A:            This fight means a lot to me.  I have a lot on the line.  I have to win impressively against
Kim, who is a solid opponent, in order to remain on the networks.

Q:            If you do well against Kim who would you like to fight next in your division?

A:            I never look ahead of my opponents but if all turns out well I would love to fight against
Brandon Rios, Mike Alvarado (again) , Adrien Broner or Danny Garcia.  They may choose
me as a tune up fight but I would take that as my opportunity and be ready.

Q:           You went professional at the age of 27.  Why begin your career so late in the game?

A:           My original trainer, Rudy Garavito, was like a father figure to me and my brother, we were
very close.  He took care of us very well but was so attached to us that he didn't want
to see us get hurt so he would hold us back from us going pro.  Although I felt bad about
it, I finally had to turn away from him,  it was either that or turn old and don't go pro.

A while back ago, I ran into an acquaintance who also trained with Garavito. He was
watching a boxing match and happily commenting about how he had fought some of
those fighters that went on to be professionals.  At that moment I knew that I wouldn't be
content with just the experience of being an amateur and that no matter how much I
respected Garavito, if I remained with him I knew that would be my fate.

About the event:

Thursday's event will take place Omega Products Outdoor Events Center is located at 1681 California Avenue in Corona, California and will be televised as a special edition of ESPN's Friday Night Fights.

Al Bernstein Celebrates PPV Anniversary

When Hall Of Fame boxing broadcaster Al Bernstein serves as ringside analyst on the  May 4 SHOWTIME Pay-Per-View telecast of Floyd Mayweather vs. Robert Guerrero he will celebrate a significant milestone. It will mark 30 years since he did his first major pay per view  match in 1983—Marvin Hagler vs. Roberto Duran.

In those 30 years Al has also called  PPV matches featuring  the likes of Sugar Ray Leonard, Tommy Hearns, Manny Pacquiao, Evander Holyfield, George Foreman, Mike Tyson, Miguel Cotto and many other champions. Now reigning pound for pound champion Floyd Mayweather joins the list.  “It’s exciting to get to chronicle the final portion of Floyd’s career,” Al said. He added, “This fight with Robert Guerrero starts his final push to complete his career undefeated and add to his boxing legacy. Guerrero presents an intriguing challenge to Mayweather because of Robert’s innate toughness, bruising style and the fact that he is a lefty.”

Bernstein also said he believes this fight is the center of a boxing “storm” of great fights that  may end up making this a banner year for the sport. Al explained the year this way: “We have seen several fight of the year candidates already in 2013 and scores of other great fights. There are at least a half dozen potentially superb matches already scheduled for the coming months, and more will be added.  2013 has the earmarks of being one of boxing’s best in the last decade.”

No Holds Barred: Jeff Monson on MMA and May Day‏

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman once again speaks with American Top Team MMA fighter and two-time ADCC champion Jeff Monson.

Jeff was originally scheduled to face Magomed Malikov on April 9 in the M-1 Heavyweight Grand Prix quarterfinals, but a pectoral muscle tear forced Jeff to undergo surgery and postpone that fight. He is recovering from this injury, and this fight is now scheduled to take place June 7 on the M-1 card in the Republic of Ingushetia, Russia.

We spoke with Jeff by phone Monday night about this fight, his career, why he is a self-described anarchist, and how he views the sport and business of MMA.

Our discussion took place right before May 1, or May Day, also marked around the world as International Workers' Day.

Asked what his May Day message would be to MMA fighters, Jeff replied, "My message would be solidarity. My message is, 'Be together.' We're all in this whether, like I said, whether you're trying to be a professional fighter or whether you're well-established or at the top of your game. It's the same sport. We're all in it together."

He also quoted the old saying associated with the IWW (Industrial Workers of the World), "'An injury to one is an injury to all.' And it really is."

We discussed numerous topics, including how this fight with Malikov may be "a classic grappler vs. striker match," why he likes M-1's new six-sided ring, how he has become a celebrity in Russia, his fascination with the country and people of Russia, the reaction to his politics, and the need for a fighters' union.

He also pointed out the "shameful" conditions facing MMA fighters, including no such union, no pension, no health insurance, no job security, no retirement, and often low pay, which is even less than boxers get, while they are still fighting. While the formation of a fighters' union is far from imminent, he stated, "It's going to happen," adding that more education of the fighters is needed and that he hopes to take an active role in this struggle.

Clergy Jumping Into NY Mixed Martial Arts Fight

Clergy Jumping Into NY Mixed Martial Arts Fight
Clergy against mixed martial arts are jumping into the New York fight over legalizing the sport and lobbying in Albany against it.

A group including a priest and rabbi visiting lawmakers says Tuesday the sensationalized violence of human cage fighting has no place in civilized society.

They're urging New York's Assembly to continue the ban. The state Senate has passed legislation to legalize and regulate it like most other states.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo says he's not opposed, urging the sport's promoters to make their case for a likely economic boost.

The Assembly has blocked the legislation for seven years. Speaker Sheldon Silver said recently he expects it to be legalized, but isn't sure when.

Backers say the sport is already here in amateur gyms and underground and regulation will improve safety.

Classic Women Warriors Boxing Management:

Laila Ali joins with Classic Women Warriors Boxing and Bad Girls Boxing in support of the Women Boxers of Kampala Project.
Retired World Champion Boxer and Elite Athlete Laila Ali (24-0 21 KO) has offered a donation and support to assist the Women Boxers of Kampala Project.
“I have seen the video’s and read the reported stories on the plight of the female boxers in Kampala, Uganda. Although I am aware that people are living in poverty in many countries including the United States, I am moved by the drive and determination these women possess to rise above their circumstances. They have set goals for themselves that others would think are impossible. Even though they lack adequate equipment and are literally training in the mud, they show up day after day, staying committed to their dream of competing in the Olympics. I know the amount of hard work, determination and preparation it takes to participate in the sport of boxing. To attempt it with literally no tools or support is difficult to imagine! These women truly inspire me!
I applaud Mary McGee for her unselfish gesture in giving a portion of her fight purse in support this group of less fortunate female athletes. Mary has shown that she is not only a role-model who is willing to help others along the way, but is also a young woman of good character and humility. For this, I am proud and inspired by her as well!
I have known Lori Steinhorst for nearly 14 years. Therefore, I understand her mission and passion for the sport of boxing. Beyond that, we share a passion for our communities, the health and well being of children and the nurturing of the human spirit. Through this project, the women of Kampala will be empowered and they in turn, will touch the lives of the women in their communities.
Lori Steinhorst, President of both Classic Women Warriors and Bad Girls Boxing said “I am deeply touched by Laila’s decision to help us with this project. I know that she has a very busy schedule, a family and plenty of other commitments that require her attention. That she wanted to be a part of this project tells me that she recognizes its value and we are grateful for that. Laila Ali is the type of athlete and role model these women need in their corner. I know that the Women Boxers of Kampala will be thrilled to receive this news!”
Eddie Montalvo, Vice President at Classic Women Warriors stated “We are so honored by Laila Ali’s commitment to the Women Boxers of Kampala. I know that is something they will come to treasure for the rest of their lives.”

Heavyweight champ Frazier's gym named to National Register of Historic Places

Heavyweight champ Frazier's gym named to National Register of Historic Places

The Philadelphia gym where former heavyweight champ Joe Frazier lived and trained has been named to the National Register of Historic Places.
Preservation officials say they were notified Tuesday of the designation by the National Park Service. They say it will help protect the building and commemorate Frazier's legacy.
Frazier converted the three-story north Philadelphia building into a gym in 1968. He lived upstairs and trained downstairs.
For decades after his retirement, the space served as a neighbourhood anchor. But Frazier sold the building in 2008, and it's now partially occupied by a furniture store. The gym sign is still visible.
The National Trust for Historic Preservation last year placed the gym on its list of America's 11 Most Endangered Historic Places.
Frazier died of liver cancer in 2011.

ENGLAND'S LEE PURDY SET TO REPLACE INJURED KELL BROOK AND FACE DEVON ALEXANDER FOR IBF WELTERWEIGHT WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP ON MAY 18 LIVE ON SHOWTIME® FROM BOARDWALK HALL IN ATLANTIC CITY

England's Lee Purdy, the number four rated IBF welterweight contender, is set to face IBF Welterweight World Champion Devon Alexander in place of Kell Brook who had to withdraw from the May 18 bout against Alexander at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey after suffering a foot injury.  The bout will be telecast live on SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING® along with Lamont Peterson vs. Lucas Matthysse as the main event.

St. Louis' Devon Alexander (24-1, 13 KO's) is a master boxer who has already won world titles in two divisions despite being only 25 years old.  Alexander is the former IBF and WBC world title holder at 140 pounds, with wins over Lucas Matthysse, Juan Urango and Junior Witter to his name.  In 2012, "The Great" made his move to welterweight and by the time he was finished defeating former World Champions Marcos Maidana and Randall Bailey, he was crowned the IBF Welterweight World Champion.

Fighting out of Colchester, Essex, Lee "Lights Out" Purdy (20-3-1, 13 KO's) has amazed British fans by sailing to the top of the welterweight division despite having no amateur career.  A pro since 2006, the 25-year-old brings a knockout streak into his first world title fight, having finished off four consecutive opponents, including longtime contender Cosme Rivera in March.

Peterson vs. Matthysse is presented by Golden Boy Promotions, sponsored by Caesars Atlantic City, Corona and AT&T and will air live on SHOWTIME at 9:15 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the West Coast) immediately following ALL ACCESS: MAYWEATHER vs. GUERRERO Epilogue which will air at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT.  In the co-main event, Devon Alexander faces off against Lee Purdy for Alexander's IBF Welterweight World Championship.  SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING® is available in Spanish on secondary audio programming (SAP). Preliminary fights will air live on SHOWTIME EXTREME® at 7:00 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the West Coast).

Bernard Hopkins vs Karo Murat fight set for July 13 in Brooklyn

Light heavyweight titleholder Bernard Hopkins' first defense, which will come against mandatory challenger Karo Murat of Germany, will take place July 13 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y., Golden Boy Promotions chief executive Richard Schaefer told ESPN.com on Monday.
The fight, agreed to three weeks ago, did not have a set date other than being penciled in for sometime in July or August.
"The fight was made and we were looking for a date and we were holding July 13 at the Barclays Center for quite awhile for a fight," Schaefer said. "I talked to Murat's promoter, Chris Myer from Sauerland Event, and they are OK with the date and I talked to Bernard and he was OK with it also, so since everyone was fine with it why not get it done? So I am finalizing everything for that date in that building."
Schaefer said the fight will be televised on Showtime, with whom he said he is wrapping up a deal.

Philadelphia's Hopkins (53-6-2, 32 KOs) outpointed Tavoris Cloud on March 9 at the Barclays Center to claim his 175-pound belt and, at age 48, become the oldest fighter in boxing history to win a world title breaking his own record, which he set when he was 46 by outpointing Jean Pascal on Pascal's turf in Montreal to win a title.
"The people at the Barclays Center are excited to have Bernard Hopkins back and Bernard is excited to go back to the Barclays Center," Schaefer said. "He told me he is already training for the fight."
Murat (25-1-1, 15 KOs), 29, will be fighting in the United States for the first time.
Schaefer said that featherweight Gary Russell Jr., the 2011 ESPN.com prospect of the year who has been beset by injuries, will likely be on the televised undercard.
"We feel that Gary Russell is ready to take on anyone," Schaefer said. "We want to see who is available and who will take the fight. It's not easy to make a fight for Gary Russell because not too many people want to fight him."
The 24-year-old Russell (22-0, 13 KOs), a 2008 U.S. Olympian from Capitol Heights, Md., has faced very soft opposition throughout his pro career. In a shutout 10-round decision win against Russia's Vyacheslav Gusev in Las Vegas on March 2, Russell fractured his left hand. He missed significant time in 2012 because of an ankle injury.
