WSOF 5: FULL FIGHT NIGHT RECAP AND PHOTOS‏

WSOF 5: Andrei Arlovski def. Mike Kyle via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)

"It was a great fight. He's a top fighter, and I really appreciate him for this fight.

"I guess I could have followed the game plan more, but I did what I did. It was a good comeback from my fight March 23."

Heavyweight Andrei "The Pit Bull" Arlovski (20-10) wanted to prove to his doubters that he can still take a punch. He took several of them from a bruising Mike "MAK" Kyle (20-10-1) but picked himself up off the canvas to score an impressive decision win on the main event of Saturday's World Series of Fighting 5 fight card.

The headlining contest took place at New Jersey's Revel Atlantic City and aired live on NBCSN. A replay of the show airs on the network Monday, Sept. 16, at 8 p.m. ET.

Arlovski, who stepped in on one month's notice for an injured Anthony Johnson, was fighting for the first time since having his jaw shattered in a March outing. He wasn't gun shy in his return, and Arlovski went toe-to-toe with Kyle throughout the 15-minute thriller.

Kyle, who also competes in the 205-pound division, looked incredible from start to finish, and he scored knockdowns in both the first and third rounds. But Arlovski rebounded well each time, and his volume of work in both the first and second frames - landing his own stiff punches and kicking the legs, as well - proved enough to erase his faults, and he was awarded an entertaining decision win, 29-28 on all three cards.

"It was a great fight," Arlovski said after the win. "He's a top fighter, and I really appreciate him for this fight.

"I guess I could have followed the gameplan more, but I did what I did. It was a good comeback from my fight March 23."

In the night's co-main event, David Branch (13-3) assured he'll fight for the World Series of Fighting middleweight title with a one-sided decision win over Brazilian veteran Danillo Villefort (14-5) in the middleweight tourney semifinal bout.

While Villefort looked to strike, Branch repeatedly took the fight to the floor and controlled the position with a dominant top game that stifled his foe. While Villefort was strong in defense from his back, he was never able to offer any counter offense, and Branch was awarded all three rounds, claiming the clear decision win.

Branch will now meet an opponent yet to be determined for the inaugural World Series of Fighting 185-pound belt.

"It feels good," Branch said after the win, his third for the promotion. "This is my destiny. I was the first fight for the WSOF, and I want to be the first middleweight champion."

Heavyweight Derrick Mehmen earned the biggest win of his career, scoring a second-round knockout over submission ace Rolles Gracie.

Gracie surprised in the opening round, largely forgoing the ground game in favor of boxing with his opponent. The unexpected gameplan worked well early but backfired in the second frame, when Mehmen started to get comfortable in his striking game.

With Gracie retreating in a standup exchange, Mehmen blasted him with a clean right hand to the chin. Gracie was out on his feet, and his body slowly twirled before crashing to the canvas in a highlight likely to be seen for years to come. Mehmen was awarded the knockout win at the 2:40 mark of the second round.

In a bizarre moment rarely seen in combat sports, New Jersey State Athletic Control Board officials called off a middleweight tournament bout between Elvis "The King" Mutapcic (13-2) and Jesse "JT Money" Taylor (26-9) just moments before the two were scheduled to hit the cage.

According the commission, Mutapcic took a prescription pill that had not been cleared for use.

"There were some prescriptions that weren't given to our doctors during the physicals and that weren't approved by us, the commission," a commission official said. "So since we don't know what they are and what they do, we canceled the fight.

"We can't take that chance to have that fight go off, so those things need to be looked at, and they need to be talked about. We just feel that we're not going to have a fight in New Jersey when we don't know what someone is taking."

Mutapcic insisted he didn't take any pills and that the inspector may have mistaken him for his manager, who is currently using medication for a heart condition.

"I really don't know what happened, what [the inspector] saw," Mutapcic said. "She might have been taking some medication, herself. I put in a good 10-week training camp. I worked my ass off. I know Taylor's ready. I'm not sure if she mistaked me for my manager, who has a heart prescription. He was the one that had it. We're all dressed the same - same T-shirt, same hat. I mean, there's four of us, and she's pointing me out, that I took it. I say I'll take a blood test. I'll give a hair sample if they need it. I've got nothing in my system. I'm completely clean."

Nevertheless, the decision had already been made.

World Series of Fighting President Ray Sefo said both Mutapcic and Taylor would still receive their show money, and the company would look to reschedule the fight as soon as possible, with the winner meeting Branch for the promotion's first 185-pound belt.

"It is sad to see this happen," Sefo said. "I've been in martial arts for 25 years and have never seen anything like this. Elvis has been training for this fight for 10 weeks, but the commission has made its decision and we have to live with it."

Competing for the first time under the World Series of Fighting banner, featherweight Georgi Karakhanyan (22-3-1) announced himself as an instant contender in the promotion with an impressive first-round finish of Waylon Lowe (14-5).

The fight, which kicked off the evening's NBCSN-broadcast main card, saw Karakhanyan set the tone from the opening bell with powerful kicks to the legs and body. As Lowe looked for an opportunity to move inside agains the strikes, he made a costly mistake, leaving his neck exposed on a takedown attempt. Karakhanyan latched on to a guillotine choke and fell to his back, quickly squeezing and earning the tap at the 3:37 mark of the first frame.

"I would've like to have showcased my standup more, but if it goes to the ground, I'm always looking for a finish," Karakhanyan said after the win. "If you step in this cage, I'm going to finish you. I'm a finisher."

In the night's featured preliminary bout, Rick "The Gladiator" Glenn (14-2-1) patiently worked through a first-round armbar that seemed sure to end his night to bounce back for a decision win over a previously undefeated Artur "The Arabian Nightmare" Rofi (6-1).

Rofi, who offered up a constant barrage of trash talk before and during the contest, looked as if he'd end the fight with the quick submission attempt, but Glenn patiently waited through the hold and kept his limb safe until the bell. Over the final 10 minutes, Rofi looked as if the intense attempt had sapped his energy, and Glenn peppered him with left hands on the feet.

Rofi moved forward until the final bell, but it was Glenn who was the busier, more accurate fighter, and he was awarded a unanimous decision, 29-28, 29-28 and 29-28. Afterward, Glenn admitted he enjoyed silencing his outspoken foe.

"It's the best," Glenn said. "When someone talks smack to you like that, and they're disrespectful, I just try to stay humble. I'm glad I won."

New Jersey's own Jimmie "El Terror" Rivera survived an incredible opening-round barrage from opponent Sidemar "Sideco" Honorio to battle back for an incredible unanimous-decision win.

A pinpoint counter hook sent Rivera crashing to the floor in the first, and Honorio rushed to mount and looked to finish the fight with punches. But a courageous Rivera somehow survived the assault and escaped the position.

Once back on his feet, Rivera turned up the volume and pressed the action as a stunned Honorio fought on in disbelief. The two entertained until the final bell, but Rivera's workload swayed the judges, and he was awarded a unanimous-decision win with scores of 30-27, 29-28 and 29-28.

"It's about pushing the pace," Rivera said after the fight. "That's what I do every fight, and that's what I'm going to keep doing, non-stop.

"I don't give up until I'm out or the referee is jumping in. I keep going to the fight. That's what's always going on in my head.

With a 12-fight win streak, Rivera may very well soon see himself vying for a World Series of Fighting title.

In welterweight action, Rich Patishnock (6-1) became joined a small fraternity of fighters who have defeated multiple members of MMA's First Family by scoring an impressive decision win over Gregor Gracie (7-4).

It was Gracie who took the fight to the floor early, but Patishnock crawled back to his feet and punished his opponent on the feet. Gracie stood firm in the pocket and traded blows, but it was the constant pressure of Patishnock that saw him through to a unanimous-decision win, with scores of 30-27, 29-28and 29-28.

Afterward, Patishnock admitted he wasn't sure if he had executed well enough in his sprawl-and-brawl approach but was happy to get the results

"That was my strategy," Patishnock said. "I really didn't think I did that well with my strategy, but that was my strategy, and I'm glad everybody thought I did it."

Ozzy Dugulubgov (5-1) improved to 2-0 under the World Series of Fighting banner with an impressive submission win over Andrew "Ozzy" Osbourne (7-6).

The action started on the feet, with both fighters trading thunderous kicks at various levels. But in the second, Dugulubgov caught one of those kicks and dropped his foe with a straight left counter. From there, Dugulubgov pounced on his opponent and dropped back to attack the leg, securing an Achilles lock that earned a tap 72 seconds into the second round.

"Victory comes only from God," Dugulubgov said after the win. "If you truly believe, your thoughts become your actions. I wanted to show my standup, try a little bit of new things here and there, but I knew if the fight went to the ground, I have much more opportunity there. When it went down, I saw [the submission] was there, and with confidence, I just went for it. Thank God it worked."

In the night's first contest, debuting middleweight Neiman Gracie (1-0) proved victorious in his first appearance as a professional, scoring a first-round submission win over Darren Costa (0-2).

It was Costa who scored with his hands early, but submission ace Gracie clinched up, brought the fight to the floor and rolled quickly into an armbar, forcing the tap at the 3:57 mark of the first round.

"I'm very happy to be here," the 24-year-old Gracie said after the win. "This is a dream. Since I was a kid, I always wanted to fight, and finally I'm here."

FLOYD "MONEY" MAYWEATHER IS "THE ONE" AFTER DAZZLING PERFORMANCE AGAINST CANELO ALVAREZ SATURDAY ON SHOWTIME PPV® Danny "Swift" Garcia Outblasts Lucas "The Machine" Matthysse In Co-Main Event In Front Of Nearly 17,000 Fans At The MGM Grand Garden Arena In Las Vegas

Floyd Mayweather truly is "THE ONE."
The undisputed, pound-for-pound champion put on a clinic against Mexican sensation Canelo Alvarez, handing the 23-year-old superstar his first loss in the toughest test of his career Saturday on SHOWTIME PPV at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.
Canelo (42-1-1, 30 KO's) fought with everything he had, but couldn't solve the puzzle of Floyd Mayweather.  Mayweather showcased his signature speed and elusiveness in front of a largely pro-Canelo crowd of 16,746 fans en route to a majority decision (114-114, 116-112, 117-111).
For the night's work, Mayweather collected a guaranteed $41.5 million and Canelo's WBC, WBA and Ring Magazine Super Welterweight Championships.
"It's all about skills," Mayweather said.  "I came out tonight and showed my skills.  But a true champion like Canelo can take a loss and bounce back.
"My dad had a brilliant game plan.  I executed that game plan.  I could have pressed it and got the late stoppage, but tonight experience played a major key.  Tonight was just my night."
After the fight, a seemingly frustrated Canelo admitted that Mayweather's skills and style of fighting were too much to overcome.
"He's very elusive, he's a great fighter and that's why I couldn't catch him," Canelo said.  "I didn't know how to get him.  It's as simple as that.  He's very elusive.  He's a great fighter.
"The frustration was getting in there. But simply he's a great fighter.  I didn't want to lose.  I didn't want to leave here with a loss.  But it happens and it hurts."
After calling Mayweather's dominating performance SHOWTIME PPV play-by-play announcer Al Bernsteinhad an insightful observation about young superstar, "Canelo may be the fighter of tomorrow, but he's not quite yet the fighter of today."
In the highly anticipated co-main event of the evening, Danny Garcia retained the unified super lightweight world title with an impressive performance against the favored Lucas Matthysse.Utilizing solid combinations and body shots, Garcia executed a solid game plan en route to a unanimous decision (115-111, 114-112, twice).
Matthysse (34-3, 32 KO's) entered the fight having knocked out five of his last six opponents and a reputation as one of the most feared punchers on the planet.  But the Argentinean knockout artist's power wasn't as apparent against the aggressive Garcia (27-0, 16 KO's), who silenced his doubters and defended his WBC, WBA and Ring Magazine Super Lightweight World Titles.
Seemingly down on points, Matthysse came out with a vengeance in the eleventh to kick off the championship rounds, knocking Garcia's mouthpiece out with a powerful straight right.  But, after a brief pause to recover the mouthpiece, Garcia bounced back and floored Matthysse for the first time in his career.
"I'm the champion of the world," said the proud Philadelphia native.  "The champion of the world isn't scared of anyone.  If you can make it out Philly you can make it out of anywhere.
"The only way to slow him down was to go down to the body and throw combinations upstairs.  I just let my hands go."
Garcia landed a straight jab to Garcia's right eye in the seventh round that completely closed the eye within 45 seconds.  Garcia continued, but did so with a comprised depth perception.
"I only had one eye for half of the fight but, it's no excuse," Matthysse said.  "He fought a great fight.  He's a great champion and we knew he wasn't intimidated by my punching."
In the first of three world championship bouts on the telecast, Carlos Molina dethroned defending champion Ishe Smith, capturing the IBF Junior Middleweight World Championship with a split decision victory (112-116, 116-112, 111-117).
In the opening bout of the PPV telecast, Pablo Caesar Cano (27-3-1, 20 KO's) scored a split-decision victory (97-93, 98-92 Cano, 96-94 Theophane) over Ashley Theophane (33-6-1, 10 KO's).
The Mayweather-Canelo and Garcia-Matthysse bouts will air in the delayed broadcast on Saturday, Sept. 21 at 9 p.m. ET / PT (delayed on the West Coast).
Brian Kenny served as host of the SHOWTIME PPV telecast with Mauro Ranallo calling the action, Al Bernstein and Paulie Malignaggi serving as expert analysts with Jim Gray and Heidi Androl reporting.  The telecast was produced by David Dinkins, Jr., with Bob Dunphy directing.

FLOYD "MONEY" MAYWEATHER & CANELO ALVAREZ
FINAL PRESS CONFERENCE QUOTES
THREE DAYS BEFORE "THE ONE: MAYWEATHER vs. CANELO"
 "He's 42-0, but he hasn't faced 42 Floyd Mayweathers" - Floyd Mayweather

"I don't care about his record....I'm coming to win" - Canelo Alvarez
Saturday, Sept. 14, LIVE on SHOWTIME PPV®
From the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas

Eight-time, five-division World Champion Floyd "Money" Mayweather and Super Welterweight World Champion and Mexican Superstar Canelo Alvarez were all business during Wednesday's final press conference at KA Theatre at MGM Grand in Las Vegas, just three days before Saturday's historic "THE ONE: MAYWEATHER vs. CANELO."

Canelo's WBC, WBA and Ring Magazine Super Welterweight World Championships and Mayweather's WBA Super Welterweight Super World Championship will be at stake on SHOWTIME PPV in the most significant boxing showdown in recent memory.

Here's what the fighters, promoters and trainers had to say during the event:

FLOYD MAYWEATHER:

"Its fight time, what else can I say?   If the game plan is to keep pressure, I can handle it.  If the game plan is to out box me, nobody can out box me. You have to be able to out match me mentally, and I'm the strongest mental fighter in the sport of boxing.

"I've been here before so I know what it takes. He's 42-0, but he hasn't faced 42 Floyd Mayweathers because he'd be 0-42.  I'm at the pinnacle.  I'm the face of boxing and I'm dedicated to my craft.
"I'm Floyd Mayweather; I can turn any fighter into a star. I don't worry about running out of opponents. I've got guys under my banner I can turn into stars and fight."

"September 14 is just another stepping stone, another opponent to me.  But he knows he's facing Floyd Mayweather; I'm facing just another opponent.

"Career-wise, I'm OK, no matter what the outcome is.  I never worry about the outcome.  When I go into any fight, I'm not focused on the money or anything.  I'm focused on going out there, performing well, and giving the fans what they want to see - excitement.  That's what it's all about; it's about the fans winning. He's still got a lot of weight to get off.  My weight is made, I woke up this morning 150 (pounds).

"I guess other fighters look at it as you win some, you lose some.  Me, I look at it as I want to win them all.  I'm a winner.  I don't lose.

On how he knows Canelo still has to cut weight:
"I know it, because it's my job to know it.  My job as a fighter to know everything about any opponent I'm facing."

On his most important advantage:
"Being able to just make changes and adjust instantly.  It's no different from you seeing Shane (Mosley) hit me with a good shot.  I say it's not a problem, because Shane isn't going to cut me on my face, I'm not going for that.  But Shane is a future Hall of Famer; I can't take anything away from Shane. And someday Canelo will go down in the Hall of Fame, as one of the opponents I beat."

CANELO ALVAREZ:
"I don't care about his record.  I'm not coming to make a good fight, I'm coming to win.
"When you fight Floyd you have to be ready for every aspect of a fight.  You have to be able to adjust mentally as well as physically.  I have to be very, very smart and ready to change my plan at any time.

"You'll see how I do it. You'll see how I beat him.  I'm calm and I'm just ready to fight.

"We've prepared like never before.  Floyd is a fighter who throws like five punchers a round and he lands them - that's why he wins rounds.  But we're prepared for that; we're prepared for everything.

"I'm ready for the best Floyd possible.  He can change his game plan and I will be ready.

"I've studied him.  I know his style and I know what he's going to do.  "I'm confident I will win because I know everything about him.  I've prepared for everything.

"It's important from the opening bell to fight smart and not fall into his game plan.  I need to stick to my plan, not fall into his.

"He's a very good counterpuncher but I'm ready for that.  I have to be smart with his counterpunching but I'm confident we can handle it.

"It's important to throw combinations.  You have to know how to apply them and you have to hit the head and the body.  That will be key.

It truly is a pleasure to be part of this. I appreciate all of the support for this fight.  I want to thank my team for working hard with me. On Saturday night, I will be victorious."

On having all of Mexico rooting for him:
"There's no pressure whatsoever.  It's motivating to have all of Mexico rooting for me."

On why Floyd hasn't talked much trash leading into this fight:
"I think it's because his other opponents want to talk trash.  I respect everyone except when we get in the ring."
RICHARD SCHAEFER, CEO of Golden Boy Promotions

"The WBC has produced a very special belt for this occasion. It's a first time that they have melted a big gold bar into the belt. This is a belt made of pure gold.

"Our sponsors put over $40 million of activation behind this promotion.  Corona is our lead sponsor and they spent 50 percent of their conventional ad buy on our promotion.

"Boxing is the highest rated television programming in Mexico.  Mexico's government and the tourism board have put their promotional efforts in the sport of boxing.  They have become a great partner and ambassador of this promotion and Golden Boy Promotions.

"In addition, we have sponsorships and partnerships with Fathom, Nature Nutrition, Fred Loya Insurance, O'Reilly Auto Parts, AT&T and Valvoline.

"Fathom is going to be showing this promotion live on 550 screens.  This is our sixth fight with Fathom.  We've already sold out many theaters already. There are more than 26,000 seats for closed circuit at the MGM Mirage Resort properties as well as many bars and restaurants across the country.

"In Australia, the pay per view has already broken all-time records with three days before fight night.

"This fight has been off the charts. This fight is something special. Celebrities are calling us to purchase tickets.

"We hope to set the all-time pay-per-view record come Saturday night."

LEONARD ELLERBE, CEO of Mayweather Promotions
"Floyd is the face of boxing, the highest paid athlete in sports. He's accomplished everything, broke all the records.  Come Saturday night, you guys will see the same old Floyd Mayweather, the one that always wins.
"This has been a wonderful promotion so far and the fans will be the real winners."

STEPHEN ESPINOZA, EVP SHOWTIME Sports
"Thank you to the MGM for its hospitality and Richard Schaefer and Golden Boy Promotions.
"This is the biggest and best event-THE ONE.  We have the biggest live gate.  We have a great line-up of sponsors.  We are live streaming all of our events leading up to the fight.  CBS has had 150 radio stations across the United States promoting the fight.
"None of this happens without Floyd Mayweather and Canelo Alvarez.  This event doesn't happen without their commitment.
"For those of you who are college football fans, I urge you all to tune in to the start of this Saturday's college football game on CBS at 12:30 PT/3:30 ET.  Be sure not to be late because there will be a surprise for boxing fans at the top of that broadcast."

JOSE "CHEPO" REYNOSO, Trainer of Canelo Alvarez
"This is a historic fight, but the time for talking is over. On Saturday night Saul "Canelo" Alvarez will make history and he will be victorious.

EDDIE REYNOSO, Co-trainer of Canelo Alvarez
"It's a great pleasure to be a part of this historic event. Obviously, as a Mexican, we always come out to demonstrate that we win can and on Saturday it will be no different. We will prove that we can."

FLOYD MAYWEATHER MEDIA DAY QUOTES & PHOTOS‏

FLOYD MAYWEATHER MEDIA DAY IN LAS VEGAS
'MONEY': 'I WAS BORN FOR THIS'

EIGHT-TIME, FIVE-DIVISION WORLD CHAMPION PUTS ON
A SHOW AS HE CONTINUES TO WRAP UP
FINAL PREPARATIONS FOR HIS
MEGA-SHOWDOWN AGAINST CANELO ALVAREZ
SATURDAY, SEPT. 14 AT MGM GRAND ON SHOWTIME PPV®
FLOYD MAYWEATHER
"This was just a light workout today; it was cool. I appreciate all the media coming out and the fans for supporting me throughout my career. It's been truly a blessing.
"I think I'll be a lot sharper for this fight. My training camp has been great. Actually, this is one of my best training camps I've had, probably since 2005. On my first day back, I got right back into sparring. I think I sparred seven rounds. So as of now, my training camp's been smooth. My dad is happy, Leonard (Ellerbe) is happy, Al (Haymon) is happy and I'm happy. I've been boxing a lot of rounds so I'm sharp. I'm in great condition and happy to get right back in there. I feel tremendous.
"My weight is made. I came into training camp weighing 150 or 149 and I came into the gym today probably weighing 150 or 149.
"Canelo is a solid competitor but it is what it is: I've faced the best in this sport, I know what it takes to be involved in a fight of this magnitude and I'm dedicated to my craft. I was born for this.
"This is a great matchup. He's a puncher. I'm a sharp boxer. You know, a lot of times I hit these guys and I make them go into survival mode. Even in the Robert Guerrero fight I was looking for the knockout, but I hurt my hand. So I wasn't impressed with myself -- because I didn't get the knockout. This time around, I'll be looking for the knockout.
"He's banking on his youth, I'm banking I on my experience. I have a lot of experience in championship fights. Look at his resume, look at my resume and see what you come up with.
"I can't talk about the past, but I can talk about the present time and I can talk about the future. The present time is, I'm undefeated, and the future is, I'm going to continue to work hard and give the fans what they want to see.
"On Sept. 14, I just want everybody around the world to tune in and enjoy a great night of boxing.''
(More on facing Canelo)
"He's no pushover; I can't overlook him. I just have to go out and execute the game plan and do what I do best. Nothing worries me. I can make adjustments.
"He is one of the best in boxing at this particular time. He's young and strong. He's got guts so we'll see how the fight plays out.
"It's not about the weight, it's about the skills. The skills pay the bills.  I can't wait to get in there and compete and test my skills against this young guy. I feel good, I'm still hungry.'
(On Canelo's opposition)
"Did Canelo KO Austin Trout? This is a whole different ballgame. He may be predicting a knockout but all you have to do is look at the opponents he's faced.  I really don't know too many, but a lot of the guys went the distance with him. And we're not just talking about A-fighters but D- and C-fighters. Guys that he should have knocked out in the fourth round, they were able to go into the eighth and ninth rounds even though they were caught with numerous shots.'
"I don't think Ricky Hatton's brother is on the level of a Floyd Mayweather.''
(On notion that Canelo will stop him)
"Oscar said he was gonna knock me out also. Did you see what happened in that fight? People are entitled to do their opinion. People are going to say what they're going to say. My job is to be the best I can be and continue to do my job. There's a reason I do record-breaking numbers.
"My last fight against Guerrero, he thought it was just gonna be easy. A lot of times people, fighters, look from the outside and think to themselves, 'this can't be that difficult,' but once they get inside that squared circle with me it's totally different.''
(Gameplan)

"I'm going to show him a lot of angles.  I have a lot of experience, and experience is going to be a factor. It's going to be real, real different for him at this level.''
(On Canelo's Popularity)
"Among Hispanic/Mexican/Latin fighters, I don't really know who has the biggest following but if I had to say so, I would say probably (Juan Manuel) Marquez because he has accomplished more and done a lot for the sport of boxing. So I don't support the thought (or subscribe to the feeling) that Canelo has a bigger following than (Marquez).''
(On why Canelo took this fight)
"I can't really say. Of course, sometimes some people want their No 1 spot, not just No. 1 in (their)  weight class but they want to be known as the best in their sport. They want all the attention, the  paydays, the money. (For me) this took years and years of hard work and dedication, belief and a strong team.''
(His hands)
"I went to three different doctors after the Guerrero fight. Everything is OK.''
(Staying ahead of the game)
"Every guy I face is always heavier. I think I'm just a very, very sharp fighter. I stay mentally sharp; by that I mean I stay five or six steps ahead of my opponents. This is chess, not checkers. These are moves you have to think about. At this level, you've got to get 10 steps ahead of your opponent."
(On what it takes to remain at the top)
"You've got to be mentally tough, push yourself to the limit, be physically sharp, have a great chin and a tremendous heart.''
(The ONE 10-city media tour)
"The tour was wild, crazy. It started in New York and ended in Los Angeles. I think it was great for me, Canelo Alvarez, the chance to embrace the fans and also to get the chance to go to Mexico. I have a lot of fans in Mexico.''
(Fighters that impress him)
"I like Leo Santa Cruz. He's unbelievable. I think he should be on the pound-for-pound list.''
(On Garcia-Matthysse)
"Both fighters at 140 pounds are really tough punchers and great fighters. I can't see it going the distance.''
(Still The ONE)
"I'm the face of boxing and I'm happy that I was able to transcend and change the sport in a totally different way. At one particular time in the late 70's, 80's and all the way to the 90's, it was all about the heavyweights. Then I came in and brought attention to the smaller guys.  I think I've done a lot for the sport of boxing, and boxing has done a lot for me.''
LEONARD ELLERBE, CEO of Mayweather Promotions
"This is the fight that the fans wanted. They demanded it, and this is the fight that Floyd wanted. In my opinion, this fight will be the biggest in the history of the sport.
"Canelo fought on a few of our undercards. We know what he brings to the table. He is a tremendous fighter, he is the biggest star in Mexico and he has a tremendous following. Floyd has a lot of Mexican fans, too. He loves Mexico. Mexicans are intelligent fans. They know the sport of boxing. Floyd has defeated a number of Mexican fighters and he has a tremendous amount of respect for their history and their fighters.
"I think now is the right time for this fight to happen. Canelo is coming off a big victory with Austin Trout and Floyd with Guerrero. This is The ONE.
"An active Floyd Mayweather ... WOW."
ISHE SMITH, IBF Junior Middleweight Champion
"It's been an amazing last six months. I was honored with an "Ishe Smith Day.'' It's been a rollercoaster ride for me since the days of The Contender and it was tough, and it hurt, but to be a world champion now and have Floyd behind me is just really exciting. I am blessed.
"One thing Floyd told me: 'I can get you to the door but then it is up to you. On Sept. 14 (when he defends against Carlos Molina), this is another opportunity where he shows me the door.
"And like I did in Detroit (when he won the title over Cornelius Bundrage), I plan on knocking that door down again."
ASHLEY THEOPHANE, Former Brisith Junior Welterweight Champion who faces Pablo Cesar Cano in opening bout of pay-per-view telecast
"You know this has been my dream since I was five years old. I watched Mike Tyson and Sugar Ray Leonard and was inspired by them. It's been an amazing journey. America has opened up and welcomed me as well as the Money Team.
"This is the biggest fight of my life, and I know I need to come out victorious. It is a magnificent card; you've got three world champions on there."

WRITERS AND FIGHTERS PREDICT WINNER OF UNIFIED SUPER LIGHTWEIGHT WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP DANNY GARCIA VS. LUCAS MATTHYSSE‏

HOW THEY PICK 'EM: WRITERS AND FIGHTERS PREDICT WINNER OF UNIFIED SUPER LIGHTWEIGHT WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP DANNY GARCIA VS. LUCAS MATTHYSSE

 This Saturday, Sept. 14, Live at 9 P.M. ET/6 P.M. PT on SHOWTIME PPV®

In what is being called its own main event, the Unified Super Lightweight World Championship mega-fight between Danny "Swift" Garcia andLucas "The Machine" Matthysse has boxing fans and media scratching their heads.  The task of choosing between Matthysse's power and Garcia's boxing IQ has proven to be a difficult one, even for the most knowledgeable boxing enthusiasts.  While Matthysse has a slight edge amongst the sweet science experts listed below, this potential 'Fight of the Year' candidate could certainly go either way.
One thing is for sure, when these two warriors step into the ring at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas this Saturdaynight live on SHOWTIME PPV (9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT), they are going to get the crowd out of their seats and ready for the Mayweather vs. Canelo main event super fight.
How the media and the boxers see Garcia vs. Matthysse:
Tim Dahlberg, Associated Press, (Garcia): "Danny Garcia doesn't get enough credit for his ring skills, but maybe now he will.  I think he boxes circles around Matthysse and gives him a beating in the late rounds.  This will be a coming out party on a big stage for Garcia.''
Steve Carp, Las Vegas Review-Journal, (Garcia): "In a tough call, I'm picking Garcia by split decision.  This could be the 'Fight of the Year'; two great warriors who don't know the meaning of the word quit.  But in the end, Garcia will do just enough to hold off Matthysse and get the decision.''
Lance Pugmire, Los Angeles Times, (Matthysse): "Matthysse has done more in his recent fights to impress than Garcia, who has caught Amir Khan with a punch, and then beaten faded veterans Erik Morales and Zab Judah.  Garcia is not a good enough boxer to escape the power punching of Matthysse, and I'd expect a stoppage by the Argentine in the middle rounds.''
Kevin Iole, Yahoo, (Garcia): "The hype behind Matthysse is massive, and understandable given his punching power.  Garcia is a good boxer who hits hard, too.  He's a better boxer and I think that makes the difference in an excellent fight.  Garcia wins a 12-round decision.''
Bob Velin, USA TODAY, (Garcia):  "Matthysse is not unbeatable, as many think.  Garcia is the better boxer, and is very good at adjusting in the ring.  If Matthysse is able to connect with one of his power shots, he could put Garcia away.  I see Garcia fighting on the outside, avoiding the big hit and just barely outworking Matthysse to win a split decision.''
Gordon Marino, Wall Street Journal, (Matthysse): "Matthysse in a 6th round knockout.  Danny is going to trade with him, but Lucas just hits too hard.''
Matt Breen, The Philadelphia Inquirer, (Garcia): "It's Garcia's chance to take his career to another level and he won't let it slip.  His speed will keep Matthysse off balance and eventually open him up for that big left hook.  If the Judah fight taught him anything, it was that he has to defend. Garcia by KO in 10.''
Lyle Fitzsimmons, CBSSports.com, (Garcia): "When Matthysse hammered Peterson as Danny sat ringside, I was sure that moment that the same fate awaited Garcia. But the more time that's passed, the more I'm thinking Garcia has the skill set -- or at the very least the toughness -- to withstand an early storm and perhaps ask a few questions of Lucas that no one has. Garcia wins a unanimous 12-round decision.''

George Willis, New York Post, (Garcia): "This is a big moment for Garcia to validate his title and make his mark as one of best pound-for-pound [fighters]. Yes, he has to avoid the big punch.  But I think he has the skills to do so and the power to finish late in the fight. I like Garcia by eleventh-round TKO.''
Ron Lewis, The Times Of London, (Matthysse): "Garcia's chance lies in being able to survive the early onslaught by Matthysse.  He showed when he fought Amir Khan that he can take a bit of stick and come back. However, Matthysse's power seems to be at a different level and I can see him winning by stoppage before halfway.''
Mark Whicker, Orange County Register, (Garcia): "Garcia takes a decision because he's skilled enough to avoid taking the big shot.''
Robert Morales, Los Angeles News Group, (Matthysse): "Matthysse by TKO, somewhere after the sixth round of what I believe will be a brutal fight.  Garcia is very tough, but I don't think he's been hit the way Matthysse is going to hit him.''
Doug Fischer, The RING Magazine, (Matthysse): "Danny Garcia is a worthy 140-pound champ, but I think he's met his match in Lucas Matthysse.  Matthysse is not only the harder hitter, but also the more composed and technically sound of the two boxer-punchers.  I think they'll go at it on even terms and give the fans a show in the early rounds of the fight, but by the fifth or sixth rounds, Garcia's face will be hammered and bloody by a series of right hands. I think his father will keep him on his stool before the fight goes too deep.  Matthysse wins by mid-to-late TKO.''
Mike Rosenthal, Ring Online, (Matthysse): "I hate to pick against Garcia, who punches hard and finds ways to win fights. I've been burned by him before.  However, Matthysse punches at least as hard as Garcia and is probably a better boxer. Also, the fact Garcia struggled late in his fight with Zab Judah shows some vulnerability.  I see Matthysse getting the better of spirited exchanges until the Argentine finally scores a late knockout.  Matthysse wins by KO 10.''
Keith Idec, The Record, New Jersey/BoxingScene.com, (Matthysse): "It'll be interesting to see how Matthysse takes Garcia's trademark left hook in what could be a more competitive fight than some anticipate.  Ultimately, though, Garcia's courage and tendency to get caught clean in exchanges will cost him against such a huge puncher.  Matthysse by TKO 9."
Matthew Aguilar, El Paso Times, (Garcia): "As usual, Matthysse will storm out of his corner and try and land his bombs early.  The sheer intensity of his attack will be enough to keep Garcia on the defensive through the early rounds.  But he'll stay away from the corners and the ropes, calmly using his jab and boxing skills.  By round six, Matthysse will be tired, having expected to end it by then. Garcia will then go on the attack and hurt Matthysse down the stretch. Garcia will hang on for a split decision victory.''
Damian Calhoun, Orange County Register, (Matthysse): "I expect both fighters' chins to get tested in this fight.  The biggest question is can Garcia do enough to slow Matthysse down?  I don't think so.  Matthysse's power and his relentless attack will wear down Garcia in the later rounds for the stoppage victory.''
Leighton Ginn, Palm Springs, Calif., Desert Sun (Matthysse): "Lucas Matthysse is a beast and he sought out the best in training when he sparred with Timothy Bradley.  Garcia is a great fighter with a lot of smarts, but Matthysse is a better defender and smarter fighter than people give him credit for.  And with that power?  Lights out.  Matthysse by eighth round KO.''
Lem Satterfield, Ring Online, (Garcia): "Danny Garcia has enough of a chin and enough youth and power to make Lucas Matthysse respect him.  He also has enough boxing foundation to fight from a distance when required in order to eke out a split-decision.''
Kieran Mulvaney, ESPN.com, (Matthysse): "This is no disrespect to Garcia, but styles make fights, and Garcia comes to fight.  That will be his undoing, as he will be there to be hit, and will ultimately prove unable to hold off the relentless Argentine. But he'll land some telling blows of his own in the fight of the night   Matthysse by fifth round KO.''
Norm Frauenheim, The Ring/15rounds.com, (Matthysse): "Lucas Matthysse by KO.  Only the knockout is a lock.  Danny Garcia's power, smarts and tenacity surprised Amir Khan, but he can be hit and it'll only take one from Matthysse.''
Grant Gordon, Glendale News-Press/Los Angeles Times Community News, (Garcia): "Garcia and Matthysse won't be the biggest fight of the night, but they'll put on the best.  Matthysse will have his spots, landing the biggest shots, but Garcia will ultimately take the bout via tight decision, showcasing a sturdy chin and a more active and accurate attack."
Jake Donovan, Boxing Scene, (Garcia): "I think people are severely understimating Garcia's chances, and overestimating Matthysse as some sort of gloved terrorist. Garcia doesn't do anything great but does everything well. I see him surviving Matthysse's most vicious moments to take a clear decision win.''
Anson Wainwright, Ring Online/MaxBoxing, (Matthysse): "This fight could headline in its right. Matthysse comes back after an absolute monster performance over Lamont Peterson -- nobody does that to Peterson.  While Garcia looked good early before struggling late against Zab Judah.  Garcia has had his struggles in the first Morales fight, early in the Khan fight and then late against Judah, but he finds a way to win.  That said, if he's in harm's way against "The Machine," he's in big trouble.  Matthysse is a one of boxing's biggest punchers. I think Garcia is good enough to stay away from Matthysse for the early going and wouldn't be surprised to see Garcia walk Matthysse onto a left hook to end matters.  However I think Matthysse's form of late is scintillating and he'll be the one who ends up victorious, catching up to the Philadelphia native in the mid-rounds.''
Alan Massengale, RingTV.COM columnist, (Matthysse): "[This fight is] one of the most explosive and intriguing matchups in quite a while.  Both fighters are at the peak of their careers.  Don't be surprised if both hit the canvas at some point. Flip a coin.  I did -- Matthyssee in late round KO."
Ralph Gonzalez, The Sweet Science, (Matthysse): "Danny Garcia gets hit too much and Lucas Matthysse is a great puncher with impeccable timing.  Although we can't discount Garcia's punching power and heart, I think the Argentina native wins by TKO in a great fight.''
Eduard Cauich, HOY Los Angeles, (Matthysse): "This is a very unpredictable fight.  Danny Garcia will show his skills, but he is going to get caught by Matthysse. Garcia will go down and the Argentine will finish the fight between rounds 6-8.''
Michael Marley, Examiner.com, (Garcia): "What makes Argentinians such strong men?  Do they swallow rocks and boulders when they are tiny tots or what?  Garcia and Matthysse will exchange knockdowns, but when the war has ended, more gifted Danny Boy is the unanimous decision victor.''
Miguel Maravilla, Fightnews.com, (Matthysse): "This fight is as good as it gets, a main event type of fight.  Garcia is undefeated with an exciting fan friendly style, the "Machine" Matthysse finds a way to exploit the slickest styles and puts tough fighters to shame. I see Garcia boxing early on and making it difficult for Matthysse; however later in the fight he gets careless and opens up for Matthysse bombs. Matthysse triumphs by late KO or decision.''
Mike Coppinger, USA Today, (Matthysse):"I what should be a 'Fight of the Year' candidate, I see Matthysse coming out on top in a firefight.  Both guys are heavy-handed, but Matthysse is the bigger puncher and should get the better of Garcia in exchanges.''
Geno McGahee, RingsideReport.com, (Matthysse): "Garcia will be courageous but defensive flaws will hurt him immensely against Matthysse.  It should be fun for a couple of rounds, but Garcia doesn't have the style to overcome Matthysse.  Garcia has been hurt by Judah and Morales.  If and when Matthysse lands, it will most likely be over. Matthysse wins by KO in the third round.''
John DiSanto, PhillyBoxingHistory.com, (Garcia): "Poised to steal the big show, Garcia and Matthysse should go to war shortly after the first bell rings. Matthysse seems to be the general pick, but I believe that Garcia will defend his crown with an upset stoppage, proving he's tougher and better than anyone expected.''
Ramon Aranda, 3MoreRounds.com, (Matthysse): "This is one of the few must-see fights of 2013, and will be a treat for fans.  Garcia has more technique, but is willing to get hit and has engaged in toe-to-toe action with recent opponents. That, however, will play into Matthysse's style.  Matthysse is one of the hardest hitters in the game and will struggle in the early going as he attempts to get Garcia to trade with him.  Once he closes in, a series of well-timed hooks may finally get to Garcia in a late KO for Matthysse.''
Giancarlo Oquendo, Puerto Rico Sports News, (Garcia): "I think Matthysse's power is out of this world, but many people are underestimating Garcia's power.  Garcia also has boxing and strength, which will be a factor. If Garcia manages to play good defense, he can win after the first half of the fight.''
Barbara Pinnella, Leaveitintheringradio.com, (Matthysse): "This should be a good fight regardless. I will go with Lucas here.  Both men are great fighters, but Lucas believes he is unbeatable right now, which might be the edge he needs to win.''
Jerry Hoffman, ESPN Radio Central Coast, (Matthysse): "Lucas Matthysse punches too hard for Danny Garcia.  He's been underappreciated throughout his career and will now get the stage to shine. I see a Matthysse KO victory, probably late in the fight.''
Benny Henderson Jr., Boxingtalk.com, (Garcia): "This has entertaining throw down written all over it.  Two guys who can slug it out, and undoubtedly will.  Matthysse will have to use his power and body work to slow down Garcia. If not, I believe the left hand will be the key punch for Danny.  Look for a late stoppage. Garcia by ninth round TKO.''
Phil D. Jay, worldboxingnews.net, (Matthysse): In my view, it's Matthysse's time and he is on the up, ready to take his place as champion.  Garcia survived some heavy weather when he fought Zab Judah last time, and could be ripe for a first defeat against the hard-hitting Argentinian.  An entertaining back and forth contest should make it to the later rounds where Matthysse's brute strength could make all the difference and halt Garcia to take the titles."
William Trillo, Pound4Pound.com, (Matthysse): "The chances of Garcia throwing a monkey wrench into "The Machine" are slim and none. Once Garcia gets a taste of Matthysse's power he will be looking for a quick way out.  Lucas will be glad to help him out by sending him to the canvas early and often.  Matthysse by KO in five or less.
Boxers
Chris Arreola, Heavyweight Contender (Garcia): "Garcia has too good of boxing skills.  His amateur career was crazy good. Matthysse has the power to catch him, but Danny's not going to stand in front of him and just be there to be hit.''
Gary Russell, Jr., Undefeated World-Ranked Featherweight (Matthysse): "I feel like Matthysse is the stronger and more talented fighter. I think Danny is under-gunned in this fight. ''
Rau'shee Warren, Three-time U.S. Olympian and Bantamweight Prospect, (Garcia):"I'm going with Danny because we are friends from the amateurs. We traveled together and Danny's a great fighter. It's going to be a hell of a fight; that's the fight right there. Matthysse is a very strong fighter; we've seen that in all of his recent fights. People always talk about his power, but Danny has power too. Whoever is able to take the better punch will win the fight.''
Marcus Browne, 2012 U.S. Olympian and Light Heavyweight Prospect, (Garcia): "I want Garcia to win because he's the type of person you root for. Although a lot of people are leaning towards Matthysse because of his punching power, I'm going with Danny.''
