FLOYD "MONEY" MAYWEATHER IS "THE ONE" AFTER DAZZLING PERFORMANCE AGAINST CANELO ALVAREZ SATURDAY ON SHOWTIME PPV® Danny "Swift" Garcia Outblasts Lucas "The Machine" Matthysse In Co-Main Event In Front Of Nearly 17,000 Fans At The MGM Grand Garden Arena In Las Vegas
Floyd Mayweather truly is "THE ONE."
The undisputed, pound-for-pound champion put on a clinic against Mexican sensation Canelo Alvarez, handing the 23-year-old superstar his first loss in the toughest test of his career Saturday on SHOWTIME PPV at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.
Canelo (42-1-1, 30 KO's) fought with everything he had, but couldn't solve the puzzle of Floyd Mayweather. Mayweather showcased his signature speed and elusiveness in front of a largely pro-Canelo crowd of 16,746 fans en route to a majority decision (114-114, 116-112, 117-111).
For the night's work, Mayweather collected a guaranteed $41.5 million and Canelo's WBC, WBA and Ring Magazine Super Welterweight Championships.
"It's all about skills," Mayweather said. "I came out tonight and showed my skills. But a true champion like Canelo can take a loss and bounce back.
"My dad had a brilliant game plan. I executed that game plan. I could have pressed it and got the late stoppage, but tonight experience played a major key. Tonight was just my night."
After the fight, a seemingly frustrated Canelo admitted that Mayweather's skills and style of fighting were too much to overcome.
"He's very elusive, he's a great fighter and that's why I couldn't catch him," Canelo said. "I didn't know how to get him. It's as simple as that. He's very elusive. He's a great fighter.
"The frustration was getting in there. But simply he's a great fighter. I didn't want to lose. I didn't want to leave here with a loss. But it happens and it hurts."
After calling Mayweather's dominating performance SHOWTIME PPV play-by-play announcer Al Bernsteinhad an insightful observation about young superstar, "Canelo may be the fighter of tomorrow, but he's not quite yet the fighter of today."
In the highly anticipated co-main event of the evening, Danny Garcia retained the unified super lightweight world title with an impressive performance against the favored Lucas Matthysse.Utilizing solid combinations and body shots, Garcia executed a solid game plan en route to a unanimous decision (115-111, 114-112, twice).
Matthysse (34-3, 32 KO's) entered the fight having knocked out five of his last six opponents and a reputation as one of the most feared punchers on the planet. But the Argentinean knockout artist's power wasn't as apparent against the aggressive Garcia (27-0, 16 KO's), who silenced his doubters and defended his WBC, WBA and Ring Magazine Super Lightweight World Titles.
Seemingly down on points, Matthysse came out with a vengeance in the eleventh to kick off the championship rounds, knocking Garcia's mouthpiece out with a powerful straight right. But, after a brief pause to recover the mouthpiece, Garcia bounced back and floored Matthysse for the first time in his career.
"I'm the champion of the world," said the proud Philadelphia native. "The champion of the world isn't scared of anyone. If you can make it out Philly you can make it out of anywhere.
"The only way to slow him down was to go down to the body and throw combinations upstairs. I just let my hands go."
Garcia landed a straight jab to Garcia's right eye in the seventh round that completely closed the eye within 45 seconds. Garcia continued, but did so with a comprised depth perception.
"I only had one eye for half of the fight but, it's no excuse," Matthysse said. "He fought a great fight. He's a great champion and we knew he wasn't intimidated by my punching."
In the first of three world championship bouts on the telecast, Carlos Molina dethroned defending champion Ishe Smith, capturing the IBF Junior Middleweight World Championship with a split decision victory (112-116, 116-112, 111-117).
In the opening bout of the PPV telecast, Pablo Caesar Cano (27-3-1, 20 KO's) scored a split-decision victory (97-93, 98-92 Cano, 96-94 Theophane) over Ashley Theophane (33-6-1, 10 KO's).
The Mayweather-Canelo and Garcia-Matthysse bouts will air in the delayed broadcast on Saturday, Sept. 21 at 9 p.m. ET / PT (delayed on the West Coast).
Brian Kenny served as host of the SHOWTIME PPV telecast with Mauro Ranallo calling the action, Al Bernstein and Paulie Malignaggi serving as expert analysts with Jim Gray and Heidi Androl reporting. The telecast was produced by David Dinkins, Jr., with Bob Dunphy directing.

"This was just a light workout today; it was cool. I appreciate all the media coming out and the fans for supporting me throughout my career. It's been truly a blessing.
"I think I'll be a lot sharper for this fight. My training camp has been great. Actually, this is one of my best training camps I've had, probably since 2005. On my first day back, I got right back into sparring. I think I sparred seven rounds. So as of now, my training camp's been smooth. My dad is happy, Leonard (Ellerbe) is happy, Al (Haymon) is happy and I'm happy. I've been boxing a lot of rounds so I'm sharp. I'm in great condition and happy to get right back in there. I feel tremendous.
"My weight is made. I came into training camp weighing 150 or 149 and I came into the gym today probably weighing 150 or 149.
"Canelo is a solid competitor but it is what it is: I've faced the best in this sport, I know what it takes to be involved in a fight of this magnitude and I'm dedicated to my craft. I was born for this.

SHAWN PORTER VS. JULIO DIAZ II TO HEADLINE "THE ONE: MAYWEATHER VS. CANELO" FIGHT WEEK CARD ON THURSDAY, SEPT. 12 AT MGM GRAND HOTEL & CASINO IN LAS VEGAS LIVE ON FOX SPORTS 2 & FOX DEPORTES
It's boxing's biggest week, an opportunity for the stars of entertainment and sports to descend on Las Vegas for "THE" fight of 2013, the championship showdown between unbeaten icons Floyd "Money" Mayweather
and Canelo Alvarez. However, before the world turns its eyes to the MGM Grand Garden Arena to watch these two warriors collide Saturday, Sept. 14, Mayweather Promotions and Golden Boy Promotions kick off festivities two days earlier, on Thursday, Sept. 12, with a special three-and-a-half hour, action-packed broadcast on FOX Sports 2 and FOX Deportes from MGM Grand Las Vegas' Premier Ballroom.
It's the rematch fight fans have demanded, as unbeaten Shawn "Showtime" Porter faces former World Champion Julio "The Kidd" Diaz in the 10-round welterweight bout as the main event of the tripleheader. The co-featured bout showcases Las Vegas up and comer Badou Jack as he takes on Mexico's Marco Antonio Periban and in the opener boxing's top prospects Julian "J-Rock" Williams faces Hugo "The Boss" Centeno Jr. in a 10-round junior middleweight clash.
Porter vs. Diaz II will take place on Thursday, September 12 at MGM Grand Las Vegas' Premier Ballroom located in the MGM Grand Conference Center on the third level. The event is presented by Mayweather Promotions and Golden Boy Promotions and sponsored by Corona and O'Reilly Auto Parts. Doors open at 5:00 p.m. PT on fight night and the first bell rings at 6:00 p.m. PT. The FOX Sports 2/FOX Deportes broadcast airs live at 10:00 p.m. ET/7:00 p.m. PT.
Additionally, with the purchase of a ticket, fans will be given a reserved seat for the "THE ONE: Mayweather vs. Canelo" Official Weigh-In taking place Friday, September 13 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena. Fans will also receive a 10 percent discount on tickets for closed circuit viewing of the Mayweather vs. Canelo mega-event on Saturday, September 14.
"Two days before boxing's biggest night, this is the kind of event that will get things started off in the right way," said Mayweather Promotions CEO Leonard Ellerbe. "There are three exciting and evenly matched fights on this card that will give fans another opportunity to enjoy an exciting night of boxing while they anticipate the outcome of who "The One" will be in Mayweather vs. Canelo."
"This is the perfect way to kick off the festivities for Mayweather vs. Canelo and I know all boxing fans will love this card," said Richard Schaefer, CEO of Golden Boy Promotions. "Shawn Porter vs. Julio Diaz is a rematch the fighters and the fans demanded and as good as their first fight was, I think this one will be even better. In addition, we've got Marco Antonio Periban facing Badou Jack in an important super middleweight bout with title implications and there will definitely be fireworks between two of the sport's top prospects, Hugo Centeno Jr. and Julian Williams."
"Getting a full card of quality fights on FOX Sports 2 and FOX Deportes, tapping into the energy being created by the Mayweather vs. Canelo bout later in the week, is a strong offering," said FOX Sports SVP Programming & Research Patrick Crakes. "We will continue to work with our partners at Golden Boy Promotions to put together packages for fight fans across the country."
"When I was approached with this rematch, there was no question in my mind about taking it," Porter said. "We had a great fight the first time, but this time around I want a knockout. I'm looking to make a statement on September 12 and I will."
"I think I won the first fight and I'm not the only one who feels that way," Diaz said. "But I give Porter credit for agreeing to this rematch so we can settle things. He's a good fighter, but on September 12, I'm going to prove that I'm better."
"Marco Antonio Periban is one of the top super middleweights in the world, and I respect him for his accomplishments," said Jack. "This is the big fight I've wanted though, and I won't let this opportunity pass me by because when I win, I'll be one step closer to becoming a world champion."
"I believe I should be the super middleweight champion right now, but this is boxing," Periban said. "So to get back to a title fight, I have to make sure I leave no doubts in my fights." "Badou Jack is a good fighter with a bright future, but he's in my way and I have to remove him on September 12."

"Centeno's a tough guy and I know he's going to bring it on September 12, but I have more tools than he does and more ways to win and he's going to find that out once we're in the ring."

On December 15, 2012, Akron, Ohio's Shawn "Showtime" Porter (21-0-1, 14 KO's) looked to add the name of former World Champion Julio Diaz (40-8-1, 29 KO's) to his list of accomplishments, but the veteran from Coachella had other plans and the two went to battle for 10 exciting rounds before a draw verdict was rendered. Since then, the 25-year-old Porter scored a dominant win over previously unbeaten Phil LoGreco and the 33-year-old Diaz gave Amir Khan all he could handle before losing a close decision, setting up the rematch the fighters and the fans wanted.

Mexico City's Marco Antonio Periban (20-1, 13 KO's) looks to bounce back from his controversial majority decision loss to Sakio Bika in their June battle for the vacant WBC Super Middleweight Title by taking on undefeated young warrior Jack in a 10-round clash at 168 pounds. The 28-year-old Periban is a crowd-pleasing battler who can do it all in the ring.
Opening the night of fights will be a rare meeting of undefeated top junior middleweight talents is another proud graduate of Philadelphia boxing's School of Hard Knocks, 23-year-old Julian "J-Rock" Williams (13-0-1, 7 KO's). Having already faced a stellar level of competition thus far in his career, Williams stepped up even more in June when he faced former World Champion Joachim Alcine, dropping him three times en route to a unanimous decision victory. If Mayweather vs. Canelo is "THE ONE" fight for boxing fans worldwide, then the highly anticipated Garcia vs. Matthysse is "THE ONE-A." Garcia, the undefeated WBC, WBA Super and The Ring Magazine World Champion, has emerged as the division's dominant force over the last 18 months by dismantling world champions Amir Kahn, Zab Judah and Mexican legend Erik Morales twice. Matthysse burst on to the world stage in May by seizing the scoring an electrifying knockout of highly skilled World Champion Lamont Peterson. The third-round knockout of Peterson put the world on notice that Matthysse's power was to be feared and that The Machine was rising to the division's top spot.

Garcia (26-0, 20 KO's) is a popular and crowd-pleasing fighter in the prime of his career. In his last start, the 25-year-old boxer-puncher registered one knockdown en route to successfully defending his 140-pound titles with a clear, hard-fought unanimous decision win over former Four-Time World Champion Judah on April 27 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y. The victory over Judah continued Garcia's streak of sensational performances against high-profile opposition that began a year earlier when he defeated the legendary Morales the first time via a unanimous decision to capture the WBC world title. The following July, Garcia shocked Khan and the boxing world with a stunning fourth-round technical knockout of the British superstar to add the WBA Super and Ring Magazine World Championships to his collection. The most compelling and anticipated fight in boxing is officially set as the sport's No. 1 pound-for-pound fighter, undefeated Eight-Time, Five-Division World ChampionFloyd "Money" Mayweather will face undefeated Mexican star and Super Welterweight World Champion Canelo Alvarez in "THE ONE: MAYWEATHER VS. CANELO" on Saturday, Sept. 14 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, live on SHOWTIME PPV®.
The marquee matchup was initially announced by Mayweather via his Twitter account on May 29 setting the sports world abuzz. The bout will be a Super Welterweight World Championship contested for the WBC, WBA Super, WBA and Ring Magazine Super Welterweight World Championships on Mexican Independence Day weekend, one of the two biggest weekends on the boxing calendar. The fight will be promoted by Mayweather Promotions, Golden Boy Promotions and Canelo Promotions.
The event is sponsored by Corona, O'Reilly Auto Parts and Valvoline and will be produced and distributed live by SHOWTIME PPV® beginning at 9:00 p.m. ET/6:00 p.m. PT. The event can be heard in Spanish using secondary audio programming (SAP).
Mayweather, who usually campaigns at 147 pounds, chose the younger and bigger Canelo as his opponent for the second bout of his new contract with Showtime Networks Inc. and its parent company, CBS Corporation.
"I picked Canelo because he deserves the chance and is the best opponent possible for me at this time," said Mayweather, who is coming off of a near shutout win on May 4 over Six-Time and Four-Division World Champion Robert Guerrero. "When I signed my new deal with Showtime and CBS, I said I was going to stay active and fight the best fighters and I am keeping my word. I looked at several different fighters and decided to pick Canelo because he can give me a great fight and one the fans are going to appreciate. Sure it's a risk to fight a guy that is younger and bigger than me, but I love taking risks. Be ready because I'm in fantastic shape and I'm going to train even harder for this fight than I did for my last one. He might be a big, young, strong and talented champion, but my experience and work ethic make me believe that I'm that much better and no one in boxing can beat me right now."
Canelo is coming off of a unanimous decision win over then WBA World Champion Austin Trout in front of a sold-out crowd of nearly 40,000 at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas on April 20. The young champion has been soliciting to fight Mayweather for some time and is excited to challenge boxing's best fighter in what could be a career-defining fight for the Mexican superstar.

At only 22 years of age, the pride of Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico, Canelo Alvarez (42-0-1, 30 KO's) has emerged as a Mexican icon, standing side-by-side with his country's greatest sporting legends. His fights on Mexican television network Televisa routinely garner record ratings. In Sept. 2012, Canelo set a new ratings record for boxing on SHOWTIME in his first bout on the network. A fighting phenom, Canelo has fought professionally since 2005 when he was only 15 years old. The powerful puncher tore through all comers on the local circuit in Mexico before winning the NABF welterweight title in 2009. He then began his attack on the international boxing scene.
