Gunn Ready To Battle Toney For IBA Heavyweight Title

Gunn Ready To Battle Toney For IBA Heavyweight Title

Following last month’s press conference where Bobby “The Celtic Warrior” Gunn and James “Lights Out” Toney nearly came to blows, Gunn made it clear to Team Toney and to the boxing world that this was going to be a fight that James Toney will never forget.

As today marks one month from the IBA Heavyweight Title, Gunn has expressed that he can’t wait for April 7 to go to war with James Toney.

“Training camp has been going really well,” said Gunn. “I feel great. I am going to be coming into this fight in the best condition of my career, and I can’t wait for the opportunity to battle for the IBA Heavyweight Title.”

In recent weeks Gunn has had his name thrown around the media quite heavily, and not only in regards to his upcoming title fight.

Gunn addressed the growing issue of bullying a few weeks back, and has publicly announced that he will be dedicating this fight against James Toney to all the victims of bullying.

“Bullying has become a disease that is slowly killing innocent kids; although it is a disease, it can be cured,” said Gunn. “People need to be proactive and take a stand against bullying. It isn’t how high you stand on the issue, as long as you take a stand, because if you don’t take a stand for one thing, you will fall for all things.”

Gunn’s fight against Toney is more than for just the IBA Heavyweight Title. The current World Heavyweight BKB Champion, Gunn has the chance to hold both the Heavyweight BKB Title and Heavyweight Boxing Title simultaneously. Additionally, Gunn has the opportunity to do something no other boxer has ever done—stop James Toney.

“I have a great team around me, and I get a ton of support,” said Gunn. “This is what I’ve worked for all my life, and come April 7 the world is going to see a Bobby Gunn that they have never seen before. This is my time.”

Gunn to Attend “Knuckle” Movie Premier!

Former IBA world cruiserweight champion Bobby “The Celtic Warrior” Gunn will make a special guest appearance at the premier party of “Knuckle” Friday, September 30 at the Irish Film Festival in New York City.
Gunn, who battled Tomasz Adamek and Enzo Maccarinelli, is globally recognized in the fight game for competing in both professional boxing matches along with organized bare knuckle fights. Gunn, a colorful Canadian based in New Jersey, was personally invited to the event by bare knuckle fighting legend and future opponent James Quinn.
“It’s a great honor to attend the premier,” said Gunn, who recently knocked out Richard Stewart in America’s first sanctioned bare knuckle bout in more then 120 years. “A lot of Hollywood stars are confirmed guests, so to be sitting amongst them while they watch the movie will be incomparable to anything I’ve ever done.”
The film’s director is Ian Palmer and a mini-series on Irish bare knuckle fighting directed by Eastbound and Down star Danny McBride will air on HBO in the near future.
Gunn is currently working out the details for a 2012 fight against the aforementioned Quinn.

Former Cruiserweight Champion Bobby Gunn to go to Battle in Bareknuckle Brawl‏

Four time cruiserweight champion Bobby “The Celtic Warrior” Gunn has made a name for himself in the square ring due to his ability to throw hands, exceptional knockout power and heart of a lion. He has achieved what many aspiring boxers dream of, but he’s not done yet.

On August 5 Gunn will be taking on MMA fighter Chris Thompson in a bareknuckle boxing match in Scottsdale, Arizona, under London Prize Ring rules.

This will be the first organized bareknuckle boxing event since 1889 when John Sullivan defeated Jake Kilrain after a 75 round marathon fight to be declared the champion. In two weeks Gunn will look to add another championship title to his already impressive resume.

“I am very excited for this fight. Fans watch fights to see guy’s trade punches, and we are going to put on a show,” said Gunn. “Everything has to have a starting point. I believe this can be the sport of the future. It’s the original form of boxing.”

Bareknuckle fighting is nothing new to Gunn, who has over 60 bouts under his belt throughout the world. Gunn wanted to have a bareknuckle contest with former MMA fighter Kimbo Slice not too long ago, but the fight never happened. While many critics and skeptics think bareknuckle brawling is too vicious, Gunn assures people that it is quite safe.

“Not only is the bareknuckle match an organized event with ring doctors, it is a fight between two professionals”, said Gunn. “This isn’t a back alley bum fight or bar fight. Safety is a big issue, and they have it covered.”

When MMA first emerged onto the scene, many believed the sport was barbaric and dangerous, but studies have shown that it is safer than boxing because of all the safety precautions taken. This is due to the ongoing and accrued punishment a boxer may experience throughout a fight, as opposed to one or two blows a MMA fighter may suffer before the fight is called.

“I want to make this sport cleaner, and show people that it’s not as ferocious as they think,” said Gunn. “We are going to show people that it’s not barbaric, and that’s the truth.”

Dominick Scibetta, Bobby Gunn’s trainer, elaborated on the difference between bareknuckle fighting and boxing.

“Bareknuckle fighting is a different style than boxing,” said Scibetta. “You don’t have as many head shots because fighters don’t want to break their hands, and there are certain areas you want to hit a guy. Bobby has a lot of experience with this, so we have been focusing a great deal on conditioning for this fight.”

Gunn is adamant about thanking his team for their ongoing support and getting him ready for another big fight.

“I want to thank all of my team, Dominick Scibetta, Kyle White, Al Ross and Renato Colantoni for always supporting and standing behind me!”

Fans of Series have come to anticipate a night of great boxing entertainment when they come to “The Rock”. On Saturday, July 11th that tradition will continue! The main event will feature IBF Cruiserweight Champion, Tomasz Adamek of Glowice, Poland and Jersey City, 37-1, (25 KO’s) as he defends his title against Hackensack, NJ’s, Bobby “The Celtic Warrior” Gunn 18-3-1, (15 KO’s). This event is promoted by Main Events and Ziggy Promotions. Seven exciting matches are slated for the undercard.

In an 8 round Welterweight battle, Paterson’s own, undefeated, Henry Crawford, 21-0-1 (9 KO’s) will take on Kaseem Wilson of Philadelphia, PA, 12-1-1, (4 KO’s). There are a number of southpaws in the Welterweight division but this will be Crawford’s first challenge against a left-handed opponent.

Adding to the Polish frenzy that whips up the Prudential Center whenever Adamek fights in house will be three other matches that feature Polish boxers. In an 8 round fight that Main Events matchmaker, Russell Peltz deems a “very interesting and challenging match”, Super Middleweight, Piotr Wilczweski, of Roztocznik, Poland (22-0, (7 KO’s) will battle Curtis Stevens, of Brooklyn, NY, 20-2, (14 KO’s). Stevens is ranked #15 by the WBO. This may well be Wilczweski’s toughest challenge to date.

Nakash, “The Jewish Warrior”, made his living as the trainer of some of Israel’s most elite soldiers in hand to hand combat. He says he fights every single one of his contests with the heart of Israel on his back.

Rounding out the action-packed card and fresh off a recent win will be Morganville, N.J.’s promising middleweight prospect Denis “The Momma’s Boy” Douglin, (3-0, 2 KO’s). Douglin, who had a brilliant amateur career, is trained by his mother, Saphya Douglin. Delen Parsley of Brooklyn, NY will also make his pro debut in the Junior Middleweight division.

A Fan Festival will be held outside Prudential Center at Entry Plaza, Edison and Mulberry Streets from 5:00pm. Food, beverages and music.
