SYCUAN RINGSIDE PROMOTIONS LOOKS TO FINISH STRONG IN 08; Can Christmas Come Early for the Native-American Owned Boxing Company?
SYCUAN RINGSIDE PROMOTIONS LOOKS TO FINISH STRONG IN 08; Can Christmas Come Early for the Native-American Owned Boxing Company?
SAN DIEGO, Calif.– For various reasons, the end of the year is typically a slow period for the boxing industry. Television networks and promotional companies are closing in on their budgets and boxers typically like to enjoy the holiday season away from the ring.
Sycuan Ringside Promotions is bucking that trend by placing three of its boxers into meaningful, “late season” fights. Former world champions Joan Guzman and Carlos Baldomir are in title eliminator bouts, while their newest charge, welterweight Carlos Abregu of Argentina, is fighting for the first time on SHOWTIME this Friday.
Abregu (24-0, 21 KOs), a hard-hitting undefeated prospect who is co-promoted by Gary Shaw, faces his toughest challenge of his career when he meets David Estrada of Chicago (22-5, 13 KOs) in the 10-round main event on ShoBox: The New Generation, Friday, Dec. 5, on SHOWTIME (11 p.m. E/PT, delayed on the west coast).
"Carlos Abregu will get tested against David Estrada,” said Sean Gibbons, matchmaker and vice president of Sycuan Ringside Promotions. “Estrada has fought Shane Mosley, Andre Berto and Kermit Cintron. All of these guys are either current or former world champions.
“We feel Abregu has what it takes to challenge for a world title, but he has to move past the prospect label first. A strong outing on Friday and Abregu will show everyone that he is the real deal.”
Baldomir (44-11-6, 13 KOs), a former WBC welterweight champion and close friend of Abregu (both are from Argentina), is inching closer to a title shot when he faces Jackson Bonsu (29-2, 23 KOs) on Saturday, Dec. 20, in a 12-round WBC welterweight title eliminator from Belgium.
“Baldomir is looking great right now,” Gibbons said. “He has that bounce in his step. He wants the distinction of becoming a two-time WBC welterweight champion. We know Baldy can do it. He’ll prove it on Dec. 20.”
Guzman (28-0, 17 KOs), a former two-division champion, is in a 12-round WBA lightweight title eliminator.
Guzman travels to his native Dominican Republic to take on WBA Fedelatin lightweight champion Ameth Diaz (25-7, 19 KOs) on Saturday, Dec. 20, 2008, from El Palacio de los Deportes in Guzman’s hometown of Santo Domingo.
“We’ve had big plans for Guzman since the very beginning,” Gibbons said. “With a win against Diaz, Guzman is back in the lightweight picture.”
“We’re aiming for three victories in December: one for Abregu, one for Baldomir and one for Guzman. We hope Christmas comes a little early this year.”

IRATE JOAN GUZMAN INSISTS HE WAS GOOD TO GO, READY TO FIGHT
SAN DIEGO, Calif.– World Boxing Organization (WBO) Junior Lightweight Champion Joan Guzman doesn’t believe Scotland-native Alex Arthur, the interim champion, has the heart or desire to fight him for the full version of the title.
“I don’t understand what the hold up is,” said Guzman, who is promoted by San Diego-based Sycuan Ringside Promotions. “Forget everything you’ve heard or read from Arthur and his promoter about me having visa problems. It’s all a smoke screen.
“The truth is, I received my visa on April 24 and was ready to travel to Scotland the next day. I was packed and ready to go. I was excited.
“I could have easily fought him on the original date (May 3). I don’t know why the fight needed a new date other than the fact that Arthur is flat-out scared of me. He was looking for an excuse to postpone this fight because he knew he was going to get destroyed and embarrassed in front of his hometown fans.
“This only makes me angrier. I want to get my fists on him now more than ever before. This guy is in for a real beating. He’s going to get scotch-taped like you wouldn’t believe.”
Guzman was scheduled to defend his WBO 130 pound title this Saturday, May 3, in Edinburgh, Scotland. He received his visa a little later than expected, but he feels he got it in plenty of time for the fight to happen.
“The visa issue wasn’t even a big deal,” Guzman said. “All the paperwork was in order. I’m convinced Arthur is afraid of me. If he really wanted the fight he would tell his promoter to get us a new, immediate date. It has been nearly a week and we haven’t heard a thing.”

WBO 130 POUND CHAMPION JOAN GUZMAN OBTAINS VISA
SAN DIEGO, Calif.– World Boxing Organization (WBO) Junior Lightweight Champion Joan Guzman (28-0, 17 KOs) has obtained a visa that will allow him to travel to Scotland to defend his title against interim champion and Scotland-native Alex Arthur.
“This was the last hurdle that we needed to clear before we could make our title defense,” Guzman said. “Now we’re just waiting on the new date.”
The fight was scheduled for Saturday, May 3 at Meadowbank Sports Centre in Edinburgh, Scotland, but due to Guzman’s visa issues, the fight will now have a new date.
“All we need now is for Frank Warren (promoter) of Sports Network to give us the new, rescheduled date,” said Sean Gibbons, matchmaker for Sycuan Ringside Promotions, the company that promotes Guzman. “Guzman cleared up his visa issues and is now ready to go to Scotland to successfully defend his WBO junior lightweight belt.”
Frank Warren won the rights to this championship fight in a WBO purse bid.
