Prince And Marston Set For WBU Title Double Header In London On Nov 30th‏

Prince And Marston Set For WBU Title Double Header In London On Nov 30th
On Saturday, 30th November 2013, a WBU Europe Championship double header will top the bill, on the Dave Murphy Acourtier Events promoted WARZONE event, which takes place at York Hall, in Bethnal Green, London.
Main bout of the night will see former WBO and IBF Inter-Continental Light Heavyweight Champion Mark Prince, against a yet to be named opponent, for the vacant WBU Europe Cruiserweight crown, whilst the co-headliner sees the inaugural WBU Europe Women’s Super Bantamweight title, being competed for by London’s Marianne ‘Golden Girl’ Marston against Bulgarian #1 ranked Galina Gumliiska.
Prince, who has a formidable record of 20 wins (16 KOs) and just the single loss, against long time WBO World Champion Dariusz Michalczewski, will be making his first challenge for Championship honors, since returning to the ring earlier this year following a fourteen year sabbatical.
Whilst an opponent has yet been announced for Prince, promoter Dave Murphy has gone on record stating that he is looking for a top fifty ranked opponent for Prince, as he intends to move the North Londoner into World title contention as quickly as possible.
This seemingly brash statement should come as no surprise, as Prince has competed at the highest level previously and judging by his sensational fourth round stoppage win, over Czech Republic’s Jindrich Velecky on October 4th, anything less would not present a challenge for the former World title challenger.
Speaking earlier, at the famous TRAD TKO Gym in London - where he was to watch co-headliner Marianne Marston sparring former British and European Bantamweight Champion Ian ‘Dappa’ Napa - an elated Prince could barely contain the excitement, of being back on the Championship trail.
“I’m really excited to be fighting for the WBU Europe Cruiserweight title, really excited.
I suppose it’s a bit surprising for people, because I’ve had just the one fight, coming back after fourteen years out and I’m fighting for a title already, but I’m more than capable to do such things, because the level of fighter I am.
I’m very different from most fighters, a lot of fighters couldn’t come back and demonstrate the power and skills that I have.
I’ve taken a year to prepare to get to this point, I’m really looking forward to doing this.”
The Co-headline bout is the aforementioned Marianne Marston versus Galina Gumliiska.
Marston, the protégé of the late, great Heavyweight Champion of the World, Smokin’ Joe Frazier, has only competed twice in the pro ranks, both times stopping her opponent in the first round.
Whilst Marston may have just fought just twice, her opponent, Galina Gumliiska, has a wealth of experience and has fought twice for the World title, as well as six further European, International and Inter-Continental Championship fights.
Whilst Gumliiska wasn’t available to talk about the upcoming fight, Marston was and she took a little time off after her previously mentioned sparring session, to talk about the upcoming fight.
“I’m really honored to be fighting for the WBU Europe title.
However, to me this fight isn’t about the title, it’s about me being a boxer, winning the title will be the cherry on top.
I am so pleased to be fighting Galina, she has been in with the best in the business and is one seriously tough cookie.
No disrespect to Gabriella (Roman) or Katalena (Lazar), they both stepped in at short notice for our fights, after injuries and pullouts by my original opponents, but I want to fight tough credible opponents.
I came into the sport late, even later than planned thanks to the prejudice and politics of the BBBofC, but I’m here now and intend to make up for lost time.
I’m really looking forward to the fight, I know it will be a tough fight, but I intend to be at the very top of my game, hopefully that means at the end of the night it will be me that gets the WBU Europe belt around my waist.”
Mark Prince, against a yet to be named opponent, for the WBU Europe Cruiserweight title and Marianne Marston versus Galina Gumliiska, for the WBU Europe Super Bantamweight title, that co-headline the Dave Murphy Acourtier Events promoted ‘WARZONE’ Xtreme Combat event, that takes place at York Hall in Bethnal Green, London on Saturday, 30th November 2013

THOMPSON BOXING PROMOTIONS & BANNER PROMOTIONS RE-INK WBO #1-RATED SUPER FEATHERWEIGHT JUAN CARLOS BURGOS

Thompson Boxing Promotions and Banner Promotionsare re-signing Tijuana's crackerjack super featherweight contender Juan Carlos Burgos (30-1-1, 20 KOs) to a second promotional contract.
After coming extremely close to winning a world title why stop now?
Co-Promoters Thompson Boxing and Banner Promotions and Burgos held a press conference luncheon earlier today in East Los Angeles to celebrate the re-connection at the world famous Tamayo Restaurant.

Said Thompson, "Juan Carlos Burgos should be recognized as the best 126-130
pounder out there. He has done a great job in every facet of his young career and today we will solidify his future and we will make sure he gets what he so eagerly deserves, a belt around his waist. Although he is 25 years old, he is a veteran of the sport as he started his professional career at the age of 16 and we know one day he will be considered as one of the greats. This is a happy day for our company."

"We know Juan Carlos Burgos can be the best 130 in the world. He is ranked #1 in the world by the WBO and he should be challenging for that title in the very near future. I'm happy to have been able to work with Burgos thanks to my friendship and association with Ken Thompson and Alex Camponovo, I know we will continue doing great things together," added Art Pellulo (President of Banner Promotions).
Said Camponovo, "we have worked very hard to make sure Juan Carlos Burgos stays with our family. We know of his potential and value it as such, we will show him the way and he will get there soon. He tried to capture that elusive belt twice, once he was close but inexperienced (Hasegawa), the last time he was robbed (Martinez) and got a draw, so we are hopeful that the third time will be the charm."

"Mini" Burgos as boxing enthusiasts call him, has come razor close to winning a world title on two occasions. Last January, in New York City, the Mexican slugger was soundly beating Puerto Rico's Roman Martinez and was the recipient of the worse judging seen in several years. After 12 rounds the fight was ruled a split draw and the Tijuana fighter was denied the WBO junior lightweight world title.
Many in the boxing media including those on the HBO telecast found the scoring an abomination.

Offered Burgos, "I want to thank both my promoters, Ken Thompson of Thompson Boxing and Art Pelullo of Banner for having the confidence in me and in my career and to Alex Camponovo for guiding me along the way, I also have to thank my trainer Gerardo Espinoza and my manager Roberto Sandoval for being always there for me. All of them have given me the opportunity to get to a world title in two occasions and now is my turn to pay them back. I will be a world champion and that day we will have a big celebration because they have been with me during the happy and hard times of my career."

Added Sandoval (Burgos' manager), "The signing of a new contract is really not the main significance of this event. It's the confidence of our promoters in a young boxer who will be a world champion and now he has to show it in the ring. We are thankful because we want to continue the good work we started some five years ago and I know that Juan Carlos can reach all his goals but with the people that really care for him and have been there since the beginning."

Back in 2010, Burgos was blocked from winning the WBC featherweight world title while challenging Hozumi Hasegawa. That fight held in Nagoya, Japan ended in a unanimous decision in favor of the Japanese boxer.
Burgos, who is the nephew of former mini flyweight world champion Victor Burgos, has rattled off some impressive wins while fighting under the promotional banner of Thompson Boxing Promotions and Banner Promotions. Wins over undefeated Luis Cruz and Cesar Vazquez established Burgos as a force in the 130-pound division. Other notable wins came against Ricardo "Piolin" Castillo and former world champion Cristobal Cruz.
There's little doubt that Burgos will follow in the footsteps of other Thompson Boxing fighters who achieved world championship status such as Yonnhy Perez and Timothy Bradley. More than a few think it's just a matter of time.

GOLOVKIN-MACKLIN WBA AND IBO MIDDLEWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP SATURDAY, JUNE 29, 2013 FOXWOODS RESORT CASINOon HBO®

The two highly-regarded middleweights will meet in their must-see showdown June 29th at the MGM Grand Theater at Foxwoods ® Resort Casino in Mashantucket, Connecticut.  The world title bout will be part of a HBO Boxing After Dark® triple-headerwith the first live televised bout beginning at 9:45 PM ET/PT.

GENNADY "GGG" GOLOVKIN (WBA & IBO Middleweight World Champion)
I am very happy to be here back in NYC and back on HBO.  We know that this is a very difficult fight for us, and one of the biggest fights that can be made in boxing right now.  Matthew is going to be the toughest challenge I have ever had.  He is just as big, fast and strong as me and we are expecting a very tough fight on June 29th
MATTHEW MACKLIN (WBC #3, WBA #11 and & IBF #14)
I am not the kind of person to turn down world-title shots so when this fight was offered to me, it was a no-brainer.  My lifelong dream has been to become world champion and now I have another shot at capturing the middleweight world title.
I take nothing away from GGG.  I think that he is a great champion.   On June 29ththough, he is fighting me and I am by far the biggest puncher that he has ever fought in his life. He won't be able to just walk in on me like he has been able to against some of his past opponents.
I want to be involved in the biggest and best fights that I can be in and that's exactly what we have in our upcoming title bout.  I think that GGG is going to have a great career and I have nothing bad to say about him as a fighter or a person, but he is going to lose on June 29th.
When Bernard Hopkins fought Felix Trinidad, everyone was picking Trinidad to walk right through Hopkins and knock him out.  That didn't happen though and Hopkins knocked him out, and that is exactly what is going to happen when we meet on June 29th. I am going to knock GGG out.
TOM LOEFFLER (Managing Director of K2 Promotions)
It is always nice being up here on the podium with people you honestly call friends.  This fight is one of the best in the middleweight division and the response that we have seen thus far throughout the media is a testament to that.
This fight wasn't an easy fight to make, we have all made a ton of sacrifices to make this happen.
I feel that we have the best middleweight in the world in GGG, but the only way to show that is to get those other so-called best middleweights to actually get into the ring and fight him. I have a harder time making a fight for GGG than I do for the Klitschko's.  That is why I give a lot of credit to Lou and Brian and Matthew for taking the fight.
LOU DIBELLA (President of DiBella Entertainment)
I am thrilled to be standing here to announce this fight. Style-wise this fight is a can't-miss. There are few other fights in the middleweight division and boxing that are as anticipated as this matchup.
Kudos go to Peter Nelson and everyone at HBO for making it known that HBO really wanted this fight.  They believe in the excellence and quality of this matchup.
I want to send a special thank you to Tom and everyone at K2.  We have both made a ton of sacrifices to make this fight possible because this is a fight that everyone wants to see.
I saw GGG fight in Monaco and when you simply demolish a world-class fighter (Nobuhiro Ishida) who has never been knocked out, you have to be impressed.
You saw in the Rosado fight with GGG that he will mix it up and rumble and Matthew is unquestionably the biggest and strongest fighter that he has ever fought.  Matthew is going to go right after him and that's what makes this a great fight.
PETER NELSON (Director of Programming HBO Sports)
All of us at HBO are happy that we were able to put this fight together. We have had a great string of fights recently and we expect to continue that string with this great fight on June 29th.  We don't see any loser in this event. We are expecting a spectacular performance by both GGG and Macklin.  It is a great privilege and we are very proud to have these two great fighters call HBO their home
BRIAN PETERS (Brian Peters Promotions/Macklin Manager)
We are delighted to be here and want to thank everyone involved in making this great opportunity a reality. Want to thank our promoter Lou DiBella, who is easily the most passionate and interesting promoter in the world.
Hopefully GGG and Matthew can show the tenacity that Peter Nelson of HBO showed in making this fight (room erupts in laughter).
Most middleweights are scared to walk down the street with GGG let alone fight him.  He is a helluva fighter, there is no doubt about that, but we are very confident in Matthew's ability and expect a great showing on June 29th.
DANIELLE CARPENTER (Executive Director, Advt. & Brand Foxwoods)
It is always a thrill for Foxwoods to host a world-class boxing event and the opportunity to team up with DiBella Entertainment, K2 Promotions and HBO Boxing further helps solidify Foxwoods Resort Casino as the premier venue for professional boxing on the East Coast.
The Golovkin-Macklin World Championship Bout is promoted by K2 Promotions and DiBella Entertainment, in association with Foxwoods Resort Casino.

PROVODNIKOV STOPS REYNOSO IN TWO!!

WBO number-two ranked Ruslan Provodnikov scored a scintillating second round stoppage over Jose Reynoso in a scheduled ten round Jr. Welterweight bout at the Omega Products Outdoor Arena.

The bouts were seen LIVE all over America on ESPN 2 and promoted by Banner Promotions & Thompson Boxing

Reynoso tried to move in round one and showed off his awkward style from his southpaw stance.

In round two, Provodnikov started getting to Reynoso with short shots. He caught Reynoso with a huge right to the head that sent Reynoso down for referee Raul Caiz Jr.’s ten count and the bout was over at 1:52 of round two.

Provodnikov, 140 lbs of Berezov, Russia is now 22-1 with fifteen knockouts. Reynoso, 138 ½ lbs of Riverside, CA is now 16-4-1.

“This is a payoff for a long three month training camp. I spent the first two months with Manny Pacquiao”, said Provodnikov

“The priority was to work the body and finish on top. The outcome was because of the work with Manny as he moved a lot and it improved my footwork”

Christopher Martin scored two knockdowns on body shots and stopped Roberto Castaneda in round six of their scheduled eight round Super Bantamweight bout.

It was a close fight early with both guys getting in some quality offense. At the end of round five, Martin landed a perfect right to the body that sent Castaneda down to his knees for a knockdown. Martin tried to jump on Castaneda in round six. Late in that round, Martin landed a thudding left to the body that sent Castaneda down for a second time. Castaneda was up at the count of nine but the fight was stopped by referee Jerry Cantu at 2:31 of round six.

Martin, 122 lbs of Chula Vista, CA is now 24-2-3 with seven knockouts. Castaneda 120 ½ lbs of Mexico is now 20-2-1.

In the televised opener, Aaron Acevedo & Daniel Martinez fought to a majority draw in a four round Jr. Lightweight bout.

Scores were 39-37 for Martinez while that score was over ruled by two scores of 38-38.

Martinez, 130 lbs of San Bernardino, CA is 0-0-1. Acevedo, 129 lbs of Moreno Valley, CA is 1-0-1.

Oscar Godoy scored a four round unanimous decision over Roberto Crespo in a Welterweight bout.

Godoy, 146 ½ lbs of Watsonville, CA won by scores of 40-36, 40-36 and39-37 and is now 7-2. Crespo, 147 ½ lbs of Riverside, CA is now 4-2.

Ceilia Braekhus retains her titles in 10-round bout by UD!‏

Ceclia Braekhus, the WBO, WBA and WBC female welterweight champion came out blazing to score a unanimous decision over contender Jessica "The Hammer" Balogun (22-1) through ten hard-fought rounds of action at the Herning Kongrescenter in Herning, Denmark last night.

The judges scored the bout 99-92, 97-93, 97-93 in favor of Braekhus who exhibited much better boxing skills than her opponent. The previously undefeated Balogun, from Aachen, Germany, was a game opponent, however, who kept on coming despite Braekhus' evident dominance. This led to some rounds that have been characterized as "messy," but Braekhus' superior ring generalship kept her in control of the fight to take the win.

Braekhus, a Columbian-born fighter who resides in Bergen, Norway, is considered pound-for-pound one of the best female boxers in the world. Her record stands at a perfect 20-0 with five wins by way of knockout. In recent outings she has defeated such boxing luminaries as Jill Emery (2011) and Chevelle Hallback (2011) with similar results.

WBO light welterweight champion Timothy Bradley vs. WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao June 9th

WBO light welterweight champion Timothy Bradley (28-0, 12 KO’s) has been really pouring on the compliments of his June 9th opponent WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao (54-3-2, 38 KO’s) ever since the 28-year-old Bradley landed the fight with Pacquiao at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

I’m just worried that we won’t be seeing a sparring partners type attitude coming from Bradley when it comes to the fight where he touches gloves before and after every round and hangs on the ropes covering up for 12 rounds like fellow Top Rank fighter Joshua Clottey did when he was given a golden payday bout against Manny in 2010.

Bradley told ESPN “I’m with the best promotional company in the world and I’m sitting pretty, ready to fight the best fighter in the world.”

Gosh, Bradley sounds like he’s really slathering on the compliments something fierce in one of those glad to get the fight type attitudes. He’s calling Top Rank the best promotional company. I wonder if Bradley would be saying this if Pacquiao would suddenly retire? Who would there be for Bradley to fight? Antonio Margarito? You take away Pacquiao, and you got Margarito, Brandon Rios, Yuriorkis Gamboa, Mike Jones, Mike Alvarado, Clottey, Alfonso Gomez, Juan Manuel Marquez, Jose Benavidez and Vanes Martirosyan. With the exception of Marquez, none of those guys are huge stars and they wouldn’t be big fights like Pacquiao. Margarito has already been exposed, Gamboa or Rios will be weeded out after they fight each. One of them will be weeded out, but neither are huge stars in terms of pay per view. Gomez is a fringe welterweight contender, and Benavidez is still working his way up. Martirosyan doesn’t have a huge fan base and is a big junior middleweight. Mike Jones is too big for Bradley and doesn’t have a large fan base. Alvarado fights at light welterweight, but doesn’t have a large fan base. Marquez is about to retire at the end of the year and is only looking to get a fight against Pacquiao after he takes on some obscure Argentinian in his next fight.

I don’t agree with Bradley that Pacquiao is the best fighter in boxing, and that’s not what Bradley was saying before he signed on with Top Rank. I know he’s saying it now, but I think he’s just showing his appreciation for having gotten the payday fight against Pacquiao. I believe Bradley sees Mayweather as the best fighter in boxing, but I don’t expect him to say that now with his big money fight coming up against Pacquiao.

Manny Pacquiao’s team react to Floyd Mayweather tweets‏

It's a pound-for-pound super showdown that's failed twice at the negotiation table in the past two years, a match-up that would surpass all pay-per-view figures in boxing and one that would unify two alphabet titles… WBC welterweight world championship incumbent Floyd Mayweather Jr wants it, WBO titlist at 147lbs Manny Pacquiao wants it but the team behind the Filipino have mixed opinions about how the bout can turn from pipe-dream into reality.

Credit: Floyd Mayweather (@FloydMayweather)

"I'm ready to put my belt up. What about you Manny Pacquiao? Let's make history," Mayweather (42-0-0, 26ko) said via his official Twitter account yesterday, Wednesday, one day after calling "punk" Pacman out for a fight on May 5.

There had been increasing suggestions that Pacquiao (54-3-2, 38ko) would not shirk from the challenge and meet it head on, however, his trainer; Freddie Roach, trusted adviser; Michael Koncz and promoter; Bob Arum, of Top Rank Boxing, have all made public their thoughts and, although differing from each other, all suggest a further postponement to what is already a protracted and laboured attempt at putting together two of the finest fighters from the past decade.

"I think it has to happen in 2012, because people are starting to say, 'Who cares at this point?'" explained Roach regarding the frustration felt by fans during a segment with host Mario Diaz of WPIX. "It is starting to lose momentum instead of gaining, so they better do it this year. I definitely think it will be the second fight for both of them this year. I think they will both have one more fight, a tune-up fight."

Mayweather's allowance to push his 87-day jail sentence back until June 1 hinged on his previous commitment to box on Cinco de Mayo so, in the event that Pacquiao is not his opponent, another - likely Saul Canelo Alvarez - will be drafted in. For Pacquiao, it could well be a fourth fight with Juan Manuel Marquez the following month.

Pushing the Mayweather v Pacquiao fight into the second half of the year is a stance also advocated by Koncz, who regards the MGM Grand Garden Arena's 16,800 seats to have a capacity too meagre for a contest of this calibre. Koncz, like Bob Arum, believes a makeshift 40,000 seat arena should be constructed on the strip. Such a task would render a May 5 date too soon.

"Why would I tell Manny to fight on the 5th and throw away a percentage of 30 million? That's crazy," Koncz was quoted by AP to have said, perhaps overlooking the fact that Las Vegas already has a mega-stadium - the Motor Speedway - that could entertain 140,000 people.

Arum echoed Koncz's views on the outdoor ground: "[The fight] could happen very easily," he said during an address on GMA TV in the Philippines. "[But] the fight badly needs [the makeshift arena]."

Adrien 'The Problem' Broner (22-0-0, 18ko) makes the first defense of his WBO super featherweight world championship title at the Scottrade Center in Saint Louis on February 25 and has already talked down the talents of his opponent, Eloy Perez (23-0-2, 7ko): "He’s a feather-fisted puncher in the featherweight division… not a good combination against me who punches like a middleweight," he said this week.

Bradley outlasts Holt; Andrade finishes off Tsypko on SHOWTIME‏. BRADLEY UNIFIES 140-POUND WBC & WBO TITLES IN A CLOSE CONTEST;ANDRADE OUTGUNS TSYPKO

ALL photos credit Tom Casino/SHOWTIME

MONTREAL, Canada– Fists were flying in Montreal as Timothy Bradley and Kendall Holt exchanged fierce blows for 12 electrifying rounds to unify the 140-pound World Boxing Council (WBC) and World Boxing Organization (WBO) titles on Saturday evening’s SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING. In the end, Bradley won a close unanimous decision with two judges scoring the bout 115-111 and the third 114-112.

Timothy Bradley (24-0) remained the aggressor throughout and the counter-punching Kendall Holt (25-3) never found a rhythm to unify two titles in the light welterweight division.

In the co-feature, an International Boxing Federation (IBF) super middleweight title eliminator, Librado Andrade continually beat Vitali Tsypko to the punch. Andrade earned a clear unanimous decision with two judges scoring the bout 117-109 and the third scoring a shutout, 120-106.

The evening of fights, presented by Gary Shaw Productions, Top Rank, Inc., Thompson Boxing and Gillett Entertainment Group, Inc., emanated from The Bell Centre in Montreal, Canada. The co-feature was presented in association with Sauerland Events and Golden Boy Promotions. It aired live on SHOWTIME® at 10:45 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the west coast).

Bradley of Palm Springs, Calif., was knocked down with a vicious left hook in the first round but jumped right back up. Bradley took a knee in order to compose himself and rose again at the count of “8” to continue on.

A walloping left hook by Kendall Holt floored Timothy Bradley in the first round. But surprisingly, he sprang to his feet and shook it off to record an exciting 12-round unanimous decision on SHOWTIME.

Bradley fought back furiously as the fight progressed. He became the more physical fighter, pushing the action and causing Holt’s corner to yell for him to move forward and take control of the fight.

In the 12th round with less then 20 seconds to go, Holt sent Bradley to the canvas for a second time, but Bradley seemed unfazed and both finished the fight strong.

When ring announcer Jimmy Lennon, Jr. announced him as the new 140-pound WBC and WBO champion, Bradley became overwhelmed with emotion and fell to his knees.

The World Boxing Council (WBC) champ coming in, Timothy Bradley took home more hardware, adding Kendall Holt’s World Boxing Organization (WBO) strap to his collection.

After the fight, the undefeated Bradley (24-0, 11 KOs) said, “I kept my faith and gave tonight everything I got. This is a dream come true for me. I knew one day this would happen and I give it all to God. I came in tonight in tremendous shape. I prepared myself well.”

Referring to the two knockdowns, Bradley credited Holt saying, “Kendall is sneaky. He is a crafty fighter and I got caught. He hits hard and I know everybody will be chasing me thinking I have a glass chin but they don’t know how hard he hits.”

An upset Holt (25-3, 12 KOs) said after the fight, “I’m disappointed in myself. I let my fans down and I let my corner down. I gave away the middle rounds with a lack of work.”

When asked what was next for him Holt responded with only one thing in mind. “Rematch. It was a close fight and I want the rematch.”

While Tsypko (22-3, 12 KOs) of the Ukraine started off strong, Andrade (28-2, 21 KOs) proved to be the quicker and more composed fighter. Andrade landed a straight right hand to Tsypko’s jaw that dropped him in the second. Tsypko was able to beat the count but found himself down again in the seventh after being hit with a solid right uppercut.

On the button! Librado Andrade (28-2, 21 KOs) punished Vitali Tsypko (22-3, 12 KOs) with consistent and accurate shots through 12 rounds earning the clear unanimous decision.

A short, flush right hand by Librado Andrade sent Vitali Tsypko down in the second found. Tsypko would again taste canvas in the seventh in his loss to Andrade Saturday in an International Boxing Federation (IBF) super middleweight eliminator.

In a scintillating 12th and final round, Andrade of Fontana, Calif., and Tsypko kept a quick pace trading blows back and forth. When the final bell rang Andrade was announced the winner, moving him into the number one spot and top contender for the IBF super middleweight title which is currently held by Canadian superstar Lucian Bute.

“He was very economical with his punches,” said Andrade. “I had to be careful when I hurt him. If I got too aggressive, he could get the edge and I would be in trouble. I felt that I had him in the fifth round but he is such a good boxer that he slipped away. “

Speaking of a potential rematch with Bute, Andrade said, “If it happens, I would be more then happy. This is a beautiful city and a beautiful country. The people here support boxing, they support the fighters and Bute is lucky to be from here.”

SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING announcers Gus Johnson and Al Bernstein called the action from ringside with Karyn Bryant reporting from ringside. The executive producer of SHOWTIME Sports is David Dinkins Jr., with Ray Smaltz producing with Bob Dunphy directing.

Winky Wright vs Paul Williams

Former World Champion Winky Wright sustained a left hand injury during sparring that causes him to withdraw from his December 4th bout against Michi Munoz. Rumor has it that Winky Wright will return to the ring on HBO on March 14, 2009 against Paul Williams, who holds the WBO interim title at 154 pounds.

Was the so call injury all a publicity stunt to go after Paul Williams? I honestly think many fans including myself have forgotten about Winky Wright, he hasn’t fought since he lost to Bernard Hopkins in July 2007. Do you consider Winky Wright to be a fan favorite?

See you at the Fights.
Thanks for your time.

JOAN GUZMAN PUTS NATE CAMPBELL FIGHT BEHIND HIM RETURNS TO ACTION DEC. 20 AGAINST AMETH DIAZ

Boxing brothers (l) Joan Guzman and Jose Guzman

NEW YORK– Former World Boxing Organization (WBO) junior lightweight champion Joan Guzman (28-0, 17 KOs) will be back in the ring before the year ends.

Guzman will travel to his native Dominican Republic to take on World Boxing Association (WBA) Fedelatin lightweight champion Ameth Diaz (25-7, 19 KOs) on Saturday, Dec. 20, 2008, from El Palacio de los Deportes in Guzman’s hometown of Santo Domingo.

The 12-round fight is promoted by Jay Boxing Promotions. The bout also serves as a WBA lightweight title eliminator.

“I’m anxious to fight again,” said Guzman, who most likely will train in Oxnard, Calif. with new trainer Robert Garcia leading the charge. “I let a lot of people down with the Campbell fight that never materialized. That won’t ever happen again and I’m here to prove that. It will take some time to earn back the trust of the boxing community, but I’m prepared for that.”

Guzman was scheduled to challenge Nate Campbell for his WBA, WBO and IBF lightweight titles in September, but Guzman was declared unfit to fight by the Mississippi State Athletic Commission doctors who diagnosed him as severely dehydrated the day of the fight.

“There will be someone present at camp who's sole responsibility will be to supervise Guzman’s weight as we do not want the same mishap as last time,” said Jose Nunez, Guzman’s long time manager. “Also, the WBA will supervise Guzman’s weight since the fight will be for the Fedelatin title.”

Guzman, who has won titles in the super bantamweight and junior lightweight divisions, is gunning to become the Dominican Republic’s first three-division world champion.

“It’s been a goal of mine to win world titles in at least three divisions,” Guzman said. “I have to get past Diaz to get myself back on that track. I just have to take it one fight at a time.”

Joan Guzman Personal Statement‏

Joan Guzman personal statement regarding his canceled fight against Nate Campbell.

I was wrong and I apologize. There is no one else to blame for me not making the lightweight division weight limit of 135 pounds for my WBO, WBA and IBF title bout against Nate Campbell this past weekend.

No trainer is to blame. No nutritionist is to blame. No manager is to blame. No promoter is to blame. Put the blame on me, Joan Guzman, because I was completely at fault.

My conduct in this important matter was unprofessional.

I rolled the dice by coming in too heavy at the start of my training camp. I was able to get away with this many times before but, at age 32, my body shut down on me with 3.5 pounds to go. My metabolism rejected taking off so many pounds in a short period.

I apologize, first and foremost, to Campbell. I hope he accepts my sincere apology.

I apologize to all the boxing fans, his, mine and fans who just wanted to see two accomplished fighters compete.

I apologize to everyone in my native country, the Dominican Republic, and I am sorry

I let you all down after you have given me years of great support.

I apologize to the Showtime network and hope I can earn their forgiveness over time.

I apologize to the Beau Rivage Resort & Casino and to all the great people of the Biloxi area.

I apologize to Campbell's entire team from co-promoters Don King and Terry Trekas on down.

I certainly apologize to my team starting with Sycuan Ringside Promotions, the entire Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation and to my manager, Jose Nunez.

I apologize to other members of my own team all of whom worked so hard.

I apologize to the WBO, to the WBA, to the IBF and to the Mississippi athletic commission.

I learned a lesson, a hard lesson, and I just hope that, in time, I can regain the trust and the confidence of all concerned.

Humbly Submitted,
JOAN GUZMAN

FINAL QUOTES AND THOUGHTS AND WEIGHTS RICARDO TORRES vs. KENDALL HOLT AND LAMONT PETERSON-ROGELIO CASTANEDA; Friday, July 4th,

NOTE: WEIGHTS – Ricardo Torres and Kendall Holt each weighed in at 139 pounds during Friday’s weigh-in. Lamont Peterson and Rogelio Castaneda each tipped the scales at 141 pounds.

Both talented fighters weighed 139 pounds, one under the division limit. The fight card is promoted by Bob Arum's Top Rank, Inc.

Ten months after a wildly controversial ending to their first fight, Ricardo Torres will defend his World Boxing Organization (WBO) junior welterweight title against No. 2 contender Kendall Holt in a rematch on a special edition of ShoBox: The New Generation on Saturday, July 5, 2008, live on SHOWTIME at 11 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the west coast).

Holt hopes to show his true colors again, and leave Torres seeing stars on a special edition of ShoBox: The New Generation tomorrow/Saturday on SHOWTIME (11 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the west coast) when he challenges defending champion Torres for the WBO junior welterweight title in a highly anticipated main event of a controversial fight that took place 10 months ago.

Photos: Tom Casino/SHOWTIME

In the 10-round junior welterweight co-feature, undefeated World Boxing Association (WBA)/WBO No. 5 140-pound contender Lamont Peterson (24-0, 11 KOs) will put his undefeated record on the line against former International Boxing Association champion Rogelio Castaneda. Top Rank will promote both contests from the Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino in Las Vegas, Nev.

Torres (32-1, 28 KOs), who will defend his WBO crown for a third time, rallied to score a hotly debated 11th-round TKO over Holt (23-2, 12 KOs) on Sept. 1, 2007, in the champion’s hometown of Barranquilla, Colombia.

RICARDO TORRES

“Holt’s style bothered me the first few rounds of our first fight, and it took me a while to figure him out. He is not an easy guy to fight.

“Holt kept running away from me and he wouldn’t stand still. He wasn’t really doing anything except running.

“I made some mistakes in the first fight. Now, I know how to resolve some mistakes I made and take advantage of Holt’s mistakes. I will pressure him and make him do things that he is not ready to do.

“I don’t think Holt is going to change how he fights. He is going to run and stay away from me. We plan to cut off the ring and keep him off of the ropes.

“I had some personal problems to take care off before taking this fight against Holt. This was the best opportunity for me. They talked about me fighting Ricky Hatton at one time, but it didn’t happen.

“Holt is a great boxer. His hand speed bothered me in the first fight. I have to get close to him and not let him dictate the rhythm of this fight.”

Stars and stripes forever: Getting into the spirit of the day, Kendall Holt (left) of Paterson, N.J., dons a red, white and blue hat while posing with Ricardo Torres (wearing a hat from his native Colombia) after Friday's weigh-in at the Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino in Las Vegas, Nev.

KENDALL HOLT

“If it don’t make dollars, it don’t make sense. No one else would have made Torres this kind of money except for me. That is why he took the fight.

“Torres hits really hard, but I will stand my ground and box at my leisure.

“I got caught in an exchange against Torres and the referee prematurely stopped the first fight. The referee stopped the fight because he said I was hurt, but so what? You stop the fight when a fighter can’t defend himself. Arturo Gatti wouldn’t be who he is if they had stopped his fights.

“After looking at the tape of the first Torres fight, I should have been circling and sticking the jab. Torres caught me at a good time and in an exchange when my hands were down. The referee prematurely stopped the fight. I was still able to defend myself. I wasn’t incoherent.

“I fought after the Torres fight and was able to get past our first fight mentally, emotionally and physically.

“Torres fought pretty passively against me. This fight,

I will focus on keeping the action alive and strategically weakening him. I am going to be as active as Marvin Hagler. I am going to make Torres pay for his mistakes.
“Torres is not going to come in there and just try to take my head off. If he said that, he is lying. He is worried about getting hit. When you are a knockout puncher, why would you be asking for smaller gloves?

“This whole week I have been thinking about hitting Torres and watching him fall. When I start to calm down, this fight is in the bag for me. If I box Torres’ ears off, I box his ears off. If I knock him out, I knock him out.

LAMONT PETERSON

“If Castaneda gets too aggressive, I am going to have to let him know that he cannot charge me.

“I can’t look past Castaneda. If I don’t do my job and do what I am supposed to do against him, I won’t be able to have the bigger fights.

“I match up with any of the guys with the 140-pound belts, and I know I can beat them. I would out-skill Timothy Bradley. I can show everyone that I can box against Ricky Hatton. I would track Paulie Malignaggi down.

“This has been the longest time for me between fights. I am ready to hit and be hit. I am ready to work.

“How I win and how I look is important tomorrow night. The better I look, the more demand there will be for me.”

Rogelio Castaneda (left) and Lamont Peterson square off after the weigh in. Both weighed 141 pounds. The unbeaten, world-ranked Peterson and Castaneda will collide in the ShoBox 10-round junior welterweight co-feature at Planet Hollywood.

ROGELIO CASTANEDA

“Peterson is a good boxer, but can’t fight. I want to do whatever is necessary to take him out of this fight. I want to fight inside and come in behind my jab.

“I want to give Peterson his first defeat. I know that I have to knock him out to defeat him. I am not going to win a decision.

“I don’t really know my fighting style. They tell me I’m a boxer and an aggressively strong fighter. I want to run through Peterson.

“I have had problems with cuts. I always get cut in my fights.”

Celtic Warrior Bobby Gunn to Headline “War At The Shore” In Atlantic City July 12th

Former IBA cruiserweight champion Bobby Gunn 18-3-1 (15 KO’s) will return to the ring at Bernie Robbins Stadium in Atlantic City, New Jersey on July 12th. The card which is being promoted by FelKO promotions, has already received media attention as it will also feature a special attraction bout between 1988 American League MVP Jose Canseco and former All Pro football player Vai Sikahema. Gunn is excited about the opportunity to headline a highly publicized card, as well as return to the ring following his controversial fight with Cory Phelps in March.

“I’d like to thank my attorney George Kokkalenios for working hard on this deal and the Feldman brothers for helping to make this a reality. In my last fight with Cory Phelps, I was badly cut early in the first round and was not myself”, mentioned Gunn.

“I am excited to be fighting on the same card as Jose Canseco because he was an excellent baseball player who has drawn plenty of attention in the past. We are currently looking at opponents and I expect to challenge for a regional title. In addition, my personal trainer Kyle White will be making his pro debut on the undercard and July 12th will be a special night of boxing”, exclaimed the former WBO cruiserweight title challenger

Showtime Fighters Wear Lakers, Celtics Jerseys at N.Y. Press Conf.‏

Sergio Mora (left) of Los Angeles and Vernon Forrest (right) of Atlanta, make their pro basketball allegiances known Thursday during a press conference at Gallagher’s Steak House in New York City. Forrest (donning the No. 24 Lakers away jersey) will defend his WBC super welterweight world title against Mora (sporting the No. 5 Celtics home jersey) this Saturday live at 9 p.m. ET/PT on SHOWTIME.

For the record, both fighters predict that the series will “go the distance” and end in seven games. Mora likes his hometown team, the Lakers, while Forrest, believes that the Celtics will take home pro basketball’s ultimate trophy.

“The Celtics have more star players and a better bench,” Forrest said.

“Both teams have a tradition of greatness and rivalry,” Mora said. “However, the Lakers have youth, a hot bench and are destined to win.”

(From left) Carlos Quintana, Sergio Mora, Vernon Forrest and Paul Williams pose during a press conference Thursday at Gallagher’s Steak House in New York City. To kick off the world championship doubleheader this Saturday on SHOWTIME, Quintana will attempt to retain his WBO welterweight belt against Williams, the boxer he dethroned in February.

Joan Guzman Slams Lightweight Champion Nate Campbell‏ JOAN GUZMAN: ‘NATE CAMPBELL, YOUR HONEYMOON IS OVER, I’M COMING FOR YOU’

SAN DIEGO, Calif.– Two-division champion Joan Guzman has made it no secret that he intends to win a title in the lightweight division. He already has an opponent in mind; the lightweight kingpin and always colorful Nate Campbell.

Campbell (32-5-1, 25 KOs), who got married last Saturday in Jacksonville, Fla., is currently on his honeymoon.

“Everyone has seen the picture of Nate and his wife in their cute, white, wedding outfits,” said Guzman, who has a record of 28-0, with 17 knockouts. “I hope they’re enjoying their honeymoon because Nate’s honeymoon at the top of the lightweight division is going to end once he finds the courage to fight me.”

Guzman may or may not get his wish since Campbell’s team is in a WBO purse bid with Campbell’s mandatory challenger Joel Casamayor. The purse bid is scheduled for Tuesday, May 27.

“I don’t know why Nate is considering fighting Casamayor,” said Guzman, who is exclusively promoted by San Diego-based Sycuan Ringside Promotions. “I think he’s afraid of me. I’ll make Nate look so bad that he’ll retire after I wipe the floor with him.

“I guess I can understand why Nate doesn’t want to fight me. Twenty-eight boxers have tried to beat me and none of them came close to succeeding.

“I honestly thought Nate was a serious fighter, but I’m starting to question that. If Nate wants a real challenge, he knows where to find me.”

ABOUT SYCUAN RINGSIDE PROMOTIONS

Sycuan Ringside Promotions has many notable boxers in its stable, including undefeated former World Boxing Organization junior lightweight champion Joan Guzman, World Boxing Council super bantamweight champion Israel Vazquez, World Boxing Association super bantamweight champion Celestino Caballero, former WBC welterweight champion Carlos Baldomir, former International Boxing Federation lightweight champion Julio Diaz, lightweight sensation Jorge Paez Jr., undefeated cruiserweight prospect Shawn Hawk and once-beaten, super middleweight prospect Henry Buchanan.

JOAN GUZMAN SETS SIGHTS ON WBO 135 POUND CHAMPION NATE CAMPBELL

SAN DIEGO, Calif.– Now that Joan Guzman has vacated his WBO 130 pound title, the undefeated Dominican-born speedster is looking for a challenge at the lightweight level.

“I think Nate Campbell would be a perfect opponent for me,” said Guzman, who is a two-division champion with a record of 28-0 with 17 knockouts. “Nobody wants to fight Nate at 135 pounds and no one wants to fight me at 130 pounds. So let’s just fight each other.”

Guzman, who is promoted by Sycuan Ringside Promotions of San Diego, Calif., might not have to wait long to get his shot at Campbell.

“The WBO has assured Sycuan that Guzman will in fact become the number one contender at 135 pounds,” said Sean Gibbons, matchmaker for Sycuan Ringside Promotions.

“Nate doesn’t have a bunch of options right now. He thinks he’s going to get a shot at Joel Cassameyor, but that fight will never happen. Plain and simple, Nate’s best fight is against Guzman.”

“I’ve always been about fighting the best,” Guzman continued. “If Nate is truly a world champion he will accept the challenge that I have laid out for him.

“Twenty-eight boxers have tired to beat me and they all failed miserably. Nate will be number twenty-nine if he has the guts and courage to fight me.

“I’m ready to fight Nate anytime, any place, anywhere. A lot of boxers are afraid of me, but I sure hope Nate isn’t one of them.”

Guzman, who has won titles at the super bantamweight and super featherweight divisions, made the choice to move up in weight after he grew irritated with Alex Arthur and his promoter, Frank Warren of Sports Network.

Guzman was scheduled to defend his WBO 130 pound title on Saturday, May 3, in Edinburgh, Scotland but the fight was postponed. Although he has been ready to travel to Scotland at a moment’s notice, Warren has not scheduled a new date for the bout.

“My team and I have tried with every good intention to honor our agreement to fight Arthur in Scotland on May 3,” Guzman said. “Frank Warren and his team made every excuse possible to cancel the fight. My team and I decided that it is time for me to make my mark at the 135 pound division and I’m going to start with Nate Campbell.”
