‘Licensed To Thrill’; David Haye V Dereck Chisora

The Boxing Board of Control (BBBoC) has condemned the fight between David Haye V Dereck Chisora which is due to take place 14th July 2012 at Upton Park, London.

Chisora’s licence to box was taken off indefinitely after the infamous brawl with David Haye in Munich earlier this year.

David Haye announced his retirement from boxing last year after his defeat from Wladimir Klitschko, and the match which is due to take place is governed under the rules of the Luxembourg Boxing Federation.

Chisora’s promoter Frank Warren faces controversy and the BBBoC stated "Those behind this proposal are not concerned with the interests of the sport of professional boxing.

"Any member who participates in such a promotion would bring the sport of boxing into disrepute and would wholly undermine the authority of the British Boxing Board of Control.

"For the avoidance of doubt, any member of the British Boxing Board of Control who participates in any way in such a promotion will be deemed to have terminated his/her membership of the British Boxing Board of Control and his/her licence therewith."

Both men seem up for the challenge and have had been having a match of words with David Hay saying "He is the ideal opponent for me, I am so glad he has got a good chin because if he didn't have a good chin he would be blasted out in first round. This means I will give him a nice, slow, concussive beating."

Whatever happens, it looks like David Haye v Dereck Chisora tickets will be popular with the masses as everyone teams up for the fight of the year!

Boxing promoter Frank Warren has revealed the boxing match scheduled on July 14 2012 at Upton Park has already sold over 20,000 tickets.

George Groves Vs. Kenny Anderson II

Some sixteen months after George Groves and Kenny Anderson battled it out for Groves’ then newly acquired Commonwealth Super Middleweight Crown, at the M.E.N. in Manchester, the pair are preparing to go to war again on the 16th March. This time it’s for the British title Groves ceremoniously ripped from James DeGale’s grip back in May last year.

Before I get into making any predictions about the outcome, let’s cast our mind back to the 13th November 2010 when the pair clashed for the first time.

Some six months earlier Groves conclusively beat Ghana’s Charles Adamu to be crowned Commonwealth Super Middleweight Champ and was the bookies favourite to retain his crown against Anderson.

However the Groves that turned up was not the same as the one that stopped the Ghanaian inside six rounds. Groves had a sluggish start, keeping his distance and only occasionally landed the odd combination.

By the third Groves became increasingly reckless and started showboating with his hands down, in an attempt to draw the Scot in. When Anderson did come forward the pair started trading some venomous big shots and the writing was on the wall for Groves, as it was Anderson that was getting the better of each exchange.

Things then got worse for Groves, he was forced back onto the ropes, constantly getting caught by big right and left hands. Groves was clearly struggling to cope with the constant pressure and it came as no surprise when Anderson landed a peach of a left hook to send the Londoner to the canvas for the first time in his professional career. Luckily for Groves before Anderson could finish him off the bell rang to end the round.

Coming out for the fourth round it was clear that Groves wanted a war and was seemingly determined to go for it regardless of the instructions his manager/coach Adam Booth was screaming at him from ringside. As the round progressed Booth was becoming increasingly irate. When Groves returned to the corner at the end of the round Booth implored Groves to stop slugging it out with Anderson.

In the fifth Stanza Groves continued to ignore Booth’s advice, as he continued to slug it out with Anderson each time the Scot marched forward. Groves showed heart though and eventually got a break, landing a couple of wicked body shots that stopped Anderson in his tracks.

Finally Groves started to heed Booth’s warnings and started boxing long, smoothly moving around the ring keeping Anderson at bay with good solid jabs. Around the midway mark the Scot began to tire, in an instant Groves took the fight back to Anderson and let rip with a series of heavy body shots.

In a flash the tables had turned, now it was Anderson boxing on the back foot as Groves chased him around the ring letting rip with exocets to body and head until the referee stepped in to stop the fight on the 2 minute 35 second mark.

Whilst the fight on the 16th March is going to be another all action affair, I for one do not think that Groves will make the same mistakes as he made the first time these two met.

The reason I say this is just two fights later Groves fought and beat his old adversary from the amateur days, James DeGale. Throughout the bout Groves stuck rigidly to Adam Booth’s excellent game plan, keeping it long, picking his shots and not getting into the much expected slugging match.

It’s these tactics that eventually see Groves get the better of Anderson last time, this time around expect him to use this approach right from the off, as well as notch up another stoppage finish.

The main support for Groves-Anderson sees the welcome return of former British Light Middleweight Champion Sam Webb in a British Light Middleweight title final eliminator against former Commonwealth Champion Matthew Hall, which should be an absolute cracker and could well be the fight of the night.

Webb’s fired up at getting straight back in the mix for the chance to recapture the coveted British crown, that he lost to Prince Arron in a storming battle back in May last year, so we can expect a similar gutsy performance to those he put up against Anthony Small, to win the title in March 2010, and against Martin Concepcion some seven months later in his first defense.

Hall on the other hand will be equally determined to prove to the doubters out there that he is still Championship material. Saying that I am sure that his first class performance against Kris Carslaw, back in November, will have already have swayed many of them into realising this.

It’s a hard fight to call, If Webb tries to take Hall head on it could go awfully wrong for the Chislehurst man, I can’t help but feel that if this becomes a slug fest it will be Hall that will be victorious and get to challenge Brian Rose for his crown - I know Rose’s first defense is against Max Maxwell, but honestly I can’t see Maxwell causing an upset - however if Webb boxes clever and utilises a game plan similar to the one used against Prince Arron I envisage a totally different result and it will be Webb that emerges victorious.

Sticking with the Light Middleweights Southern Area Champ Steve O’Meara takes on former Commonwealth Champion Bradley Pryce in a non-championship bout. Just as with Webb-Hall this bout has the potential to be an explosive all action affair, although have to say it could well be a short one if O’Meara continues his exceptional form of late - first round knockout of big punching Ryan Toms to lift the Southern Area strap in September last year and another first round KO of Nathan Weise in his first defense back in December.

Also on the card are no less than three classy TRAD TKO gym mates, former Olympian and current Southern Area Middleweight Champion Billy Joe Saunders, Dean ‘Irish Lightning’ Byrne and the superb rising Super Middleweight star Frankie Buglioni.

Last but not least Sam Webb’s team mate the hugely popular ‘Super’ Bradley Skeete will take part in his third bout of 2012.

Even though opponents have yet to be named for Saunders, Byrne, Buglioni and Skeete, already this card is looking to be one of the strongest and most exciting of the year so far. Mind you it could also be one of the shortest.

The reason I say that is I honestly can’t see either Groves-Anderson, Webb-Hall or O’Meara-Pryce going the distance, and let’s face it no matter who you put in with Saunders and Buglioni they are likely to get them out of there early.

Out of Saunders’ last six fights only one, against Gary Boulden, has gone the distance, all the others Billy Joe dispatched in under two rounds, whilst his TKO gym mate Buglioni has two first round finishes out of three outings, including a stunning stoppage of former Southern Area Champ Paul Morby, pretty impressive when you consider that headlining Kenny Anderson took three rounds to finish Morby off only a month earlier.

The Frank Warren Promoted event, headlined by ‘Saint’ George Groves versus Kenny Anderson, will take place at Wembley Arena, and broadcast live on BoxNation (Sky Ch. 456 and Virgin Ch. 546), on Friday, 16th March 2012.

Barrera faces Wrath of Khan; Mar. 14 PPV show also features Maccarinelli-Afolabi & Cook-Martinez title fights

HOBOKEN, N.J.– The hype surrounding 22-year-old lightweight prospect Amir Khan may not be the same since his stunning first-round knockout loss to Breidis Prescott last September, but the 2004 Olympic silver medallist has the full confidence of his head trainer, Freddie Roach, as they prepare in Los Angeles for Khan’s showdown with multiple world champion “The Baby Faced Assassin” Marco Antonio Barrera, Saturday, March 14 at The M.E.N. Arena in Manchester, United Kingdom.

Integrated Sports is distributing three 12-round championship bouts featured on the “Khan-Barrera” pay-per-view card, presented by Frank Warren, in North America for live viewing at 4 PM/ET – 1 PM/PT on cable and satellite pay-per-view via iN Demand, TVN, DirecTV and Dish Network in the United States, as well as Viewer’s Choice and Bell TV in Canada, for a suggested retail price of only $24.95. Khan (19-1, 15 KOs), training at Roach’s famed Wild Card Gym, defends his WBA International lightweight title against seven-time world champion Barrera (65-6, 42 KOs) in the 12-round main event. The two other PPV fights will be former WBO cruiserweight title-holder Enzo Maccarinelli (29-2, 22 KOs) against NABO champ Ola “Kryptonite” Afolabi (13-1-3, 5 KOs) for the WBO cruiserweight championship, while WBO super middleweight champion Nicky “Cookie” Cook (29-1, 16 KOs) defends his title belt against undefeated No. 1 contender Roman “Rocky” Martinez (21-0-1, 12 KOs).

Khan, coming off of a win by second-round TKO of Oisin Fagan for the WBA International title last December, is rated No. 9 by the WBO and No. 13 by the IBF. Roach favourably compares his prospect, Khan, with his ace, pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao.

“Athleticism, speed.....everything,” Roach explained why he believes Amir will emerge victoriously. “Barrera’s best was at 122 and 126; Amir is a big 135-pounder. It’s the perfect time – 22-year-old kid against a 35-year-old veteran. We respect Barrera and there’s a lot we have to lookout from him. Barrera can set-up guys with his experience but we’ve really prepared for that.

“Amir reminds me a lot of Manny Pacquiao. They’re both very athletic and Amir is the only guy who can run with Manny. I remember Manny getting knocked out early in his career (by Rustico Torrecampo in 1996) and everybody writing him off. Amir came in on a bigger stage from the Olympics, but I believe he’ll rebound and become world champion. I brought Amir here (Wild Card) to camp to be with Manny and sparring together built Amir’s confidence. If he can do as well as he did with Manny, he can do as well against anybody. He just made a young man’s mistake against Prescott, going for the knockout, and he got caught. Anybody can get caught and Amir is perfecting his defense. He has come along well since his first fight (vs. Fagan) with me.”

Barrera, who has held world titles in three different weight classes during his 19-year pro career, holds wins against a Who’s Who of contemporary world champions and/or challengers such as Erik Morales (twice), Paulie Ayala, Prince Naseem Hamed, Kevin Kelly, Johnny Tapia, Robbie Peden, Mzonke Fana, and Rocky Juarez (twice).


WBO No. 1 rated Maccarinelli, ranked No. 6 by The Ring, defeated Mohamed Azzaoui, Wayne Braithwite, Bobby Gunn, Marcelo Fabian Dominguez and Mark Hobson (twice) during his WBO title reign (2006-2008). The WBO No. 2 rated London-born Afolabi, now living in California, captured the NABO crown last April, stopping previously unbeaten Eric Fields in the 10th round.

Cook won the WBO super featherweight title in his last fight, taking a 12-round unanimous decision from Alex Arthur (26-1) last September in The M.E.N. Arena. ‘USS’ Cunningham Hopes Scuppered As Maccarinelli Chooses Ramirez For WBO Title Fight

Steve ‘USS’ Cunningham’s hopes of facing Enzo Maccarinelli in Manchester, England on the 14th March were dashed when promoter, Frank Warren, wrote in his weekly column in the British newspaper, The Sun, that Maccarinelli will now face interim-champion, Victor Ramirez, for the vacant WBO title. On being told the news ‘USS’ Cunningham, the former IBF cruiserweight champion who recently lost his title to Thomas ‘Goral’ Adamek in one ofthe greatest fights of 2008, said: “Man, I thought this would be a greattime to fight Enzo. We tried to put that fight together last summer, butit never happened. I’m ready to dust of my passport, but that’ll have to wait for now. Oh man, It’s a shame. I think it would have been a seriously great fight and I’ve wanted to fight in Britain for a long time. Shoot, I don’t luck getting it on with British fighters. Haye moved to the heavyweights last year and now this chance to face Enzo is shot. You know,one day I will get to fight in Britain or face Enzo. I’m sure it’ll happen. JOAN GUZMAN SETS SIGHTS ON WBO 135 POUND CHAMPION NATE CAMPBELL

SAN DIEGO, Calif.– Now that Joan Guzman has vacated his WBO 130 pound title, the undefeated Dominican-born speedster is looking for a challenge at the lightweight level.


“I think Nate Campbell would be a perfect opponent for me,” said Guzman, who is a two-division champion with a record of 28-0 with 17 knockouts. “Nobody wants to fight Nate at 135 pounds and no one wants to fight me at 130 pounds. So let’s just fight each other.”

Guzman, who is promoted by Sycuan Ringside Promotions of San Diego, Calif., might not have to wait long to get his shot at Campbell.

“The WBO has assured Sycuan that Guzman will in fact become the number one contender at 135 pounds,” said Sean Gibbons, matchmaker for Sycuan Ringside Promotions.


“Nate doesn’t have a bunch of options right now. He thinks he’s going to get a shot at Joel Cassameyor, but that fight will never happen. Plain and simple, Nate’s best fight is against Guzman.”

“I’ve always been about fighting the best,” Guzman continued. “If Nate is truly a world champion he will accept the challenge that I have laid out for him.

“Twenty-eight boxers have tired to beat me and they all failed miserably. Nate will be number twenty-nine if he has the guts and courage to fight me.

“I’m ready to fight Nate anytime, any place, anywhere. A lot of boxers are afraid of me, but I sure hope Nate isn’t one of them.”



Guzman, who has won titles at the super bantamweight and super featherweight divisions, made the choice to move up in weight after he grew irritated with Alex Arthur and his promoter, Frank Warren of Sports Network.

Guzman was scheduled to defend his WBO 130 pound title on Saturday, May 3, in Edinburgh, Scotland but the fight was postponed. Although he has been ready to travel to Scotland at a moment’s notice, Warren has not scheduled a new date for the bout.

“My team and I have tried with every good intention to honor our agreement to fight Arthur in Scotland on May 3,” Guzman said. “Frank Warren and his team made every excuse possible to cancel the fight. My team and I decided that it is time for me to make my mark at the 135 pound division and I’m going to start with Nate Campbell.”

Promoted by Top Rank, in association with Frank Warrens Sports Network and Caesars Atlantic City, the 12-round Pavlik-Lockett world middleweight championship fight will take place Saturday, June 7, at Atlantic Citys Boardwalk Hall, and will be broadcast live on HBO World Championship Boxing, beginning at 9:35 p.m. EDT / 6:35 p.m. PDT.

The broadcast will open with Daniel Ponce De Leon (34-1, 30 KOs), from Mexico, defending his WBO junior featherweight title against undefeated No. 1 contender and mandatory challenger Juan Manuel Lopez (21-0, 19 KOs), from Puerto Rico.

WBO 130 POUND CHAMPION JOAN GUZMAN READY TO DEFEND AGAINST ALEX ARTHUR; FIGHT WILL GET A NEW DATE

SAN DIEGO, Calif– Contrary to information circulated on the internet, undefeated World Boxing Organization (WBO) Junior Lightweight Champion Joan Guzman (28-0, 17 KOs) will travel to Scotland to defend his title against interim champion Alex Arthur.

Inaccurate reports across the internet have stated that Guzman has pulled out of his title fight against Arthur (26-1, 19 KOs), which is currently scheduled for Saturday, May 3 in Edinburgh, Scotland. The highly anticipated fight, however, will likely be rescheduled.

“Guzman is not giving up his belt,” said Jose Nunez, Guzman’s long time manager. “He’s worked extremely hard and gone through tremendous sacrifices to become a world champion. He’s simply not going to give up his belt. Guzman will go to Scotland and he will successfully defend his title. The date will most likely be pushed back a bit.”

Guzman, who has fought in the U.K. once before, has had some trouble securing a visa that will allow him to travel to Scotland. According to Nunez, the issue is being resolved.

“Rest assured that team Guzman will have all the appropriate paperwork for this fight,” Nunez said. “We know what has to be done and we understand the time frame that is needed to accomplish this.”

“Right now we’re taking a wait-and-see approach,” said Sean Gibbons, matchmaker for Sycuan Ringside Promotions, the company that promotes Guzman. “We are waiting for Frank Warren of Sports Network to give us the new, rescheduled date.”

Frank Warren won the rights to this championship fight in a WBO purse bid.

James McGirt, Jr.; regroups after 1st loss, moving back to middleweight

VERO BEACH, Florida– There’s nothing more devastating in boxing that than a hot prospect’s first pro loss, especially for someone such as James McGirt, Jr. (18-1, 9 KOs), whose last name alone makes opponents perform better. McGirt suffered his first set-back April 11 when another son of a former world champion, Carlos “Baby Sugar” DeLeon, Jr. (20-2-2, 12 KOs), stopped James in the seventh round of their ShoBox co-feature.

DeLeon was floored by McGirt at the end of the sixth round, but he got to his feet just before the bell sounded. “When I dropped him, instead of listening to my father (head trainer “Buddy” McGirt), I got careless,” James explained. “I had him but dropped my right hand and got caught. My legs were a little wobbly, but I was more embarrassed than anything having been knocked down for the first time in my career. I thought that I could deal with it but got hit with an uppercut. I tried to wait it out, hoping he’d gotten tired punching, but I wasn’t punching back and the ref stopped the fight.

“The hardest thing in the world is to take your first loss. I still know that I’m going to be a world champion someday. This is part of the learning experience. No excuses. I should have listened and boxed. It’s a hard pill to shallow. I want a rematch, but I know it won’t happen right away. I won’t be able to sleep at night unless I fight him one more time.”

McGirt’s father, 2-time world champion “Buddy,” suffered his first pro loss in his 30th fight, as the No. 1 contender in the world, to Frankie Warren by 10-round decision. “I warned James last year that he was dropping his right hand too much,” Buddy noted. “You can’t take anything for granted. Once he knocked the other guy down, James thought that he had him, but he got caught by that left hook. It’s a great learning experience. I was talking to Roy Jones. He said at least it happened now or he would have kept doing it and now he’ll listen. James can’t have a flamboyant, relaxed attitude like he did in basketball. On the court he could be nonchalant, flashy, but you can’t do that in the ring. They’re always trying to beat Buddy McGirt’s son and Buddy McGirt. In a way I’m glad it happened. It’s going to be a good learning experience for James. I told him he should thank DeLeon for the wake-up call because he got lazy.

“Sure, it’s a hard pill to swallow. I saw the punch hit him and I can still visualize it like a picture in my mind. That night, James became a man, and not just in the ring. Taking nothing away from DeLeon, James had the fight and should have won. Now he has to put it behind him and move forward. After a first loss, you either become a better fighter, or get out of the game. James’ eyes were opened. You can’t do what he did in basketball, not in this business, and now he understands. What he does from here on will determine what he is in boxing.”

McGirt may have been more comfortable making weight and fighting as a super middleweight, but the plan is for him to slowly move back to the middleweight division. “His opponents at super middleweight are too big,” McGirt’s manager Dennis Witherow explained. “I talked with Buddy after the fight and we agree that James needs to fight as a middleweight. They weighed-in the same weight but, in the fight, the difference in their weight made a big difference. He’ll fight at 162-163 in his next fight, hopefully in July. We’re going forward, not looking backwards. The loss is part of the learning process, a bump in the road. He got caught and that’s just part of the game.”

Buddy added, “The last two days (prior to the fight) James just shadow-boxed. He didn’t run or train, ate right before the weigh in, and came in at 166. He won’t have a problem making 163. We saw how small James (166-167 lbs. in the fight) was in comparison to DeLeon (between 180-185 lbs) and even (Jason) Naugler. James will be fighting as a middleweight.”
