Cunningham A Free Agent, Eyes Move To Heavyweight
Former two time IBF Champion of the World, Steve ‘USS’ Cunningham, announced earlier today that he is now a promotional free agent, as well as stated that he is considering a move to the Heavyweight division.
Cunningham, whose second reign as Champion see him secure victories over Troy Ross and Enad Licina before controversially losing his crown, due to a dubious Technical Decision in favour of his opponent, Cuba’s Yoan Pablo Hernandez, in October 2011.
The IBF reacted instantly, ordering an immediate rematch, which took place on the 4th February, this time the bout went the distance, however the result went against the former Navy man.
Since the second Hernandez fight, Team Cunningham have been attempting to secure a meaningful Cruiserweight bout, preferably a title challenge, without any success.
On making the announcement Cunningham said, "I'm excited to be a free agent again and see what's out there.
I feel like heavyweight is the right move for me right now, but I would still take the right cruiserweight fight.
I would love to fight in America again, but I'll go wherever duty calls."

STEVE ‘USS’ CUNNINGHAM Two Time IBF Cruiserweight Champion Of The World Two Time ‘Fighter of The Year’ Briscoe Award Recipient
Steve ‘USS’ Cunningham Awarded ‘Fighter of The Year’ Briscoe For Second Time
Two time IBF Cruiserweight Champion of the World Steve ‘USS’ Cunningham became the first two time Briscoe Award winner, after receiving his second ‘Fighter Of The Year’ award, at the 4th Annual Briscoe Awards, which took place at the VBA Club in Port Richmond, PA, on Monday evening.
Cunningham, who was awarded the 2007 ‘Fighter of the Year’ Briscoe ahead of his December ‘08 ‘Fight of the Year’ nominated battle against Tomasz Adamek, was put forward for his second Briscoe after securing the IBF title for the second time, and won based on votes cast by boxing fans, boxing media, and the readers of the Web site PhillyBoxingHistory.com.
Speaking from his Philadelphia home earlier today Cunningham said, “Being voted Philly’s boxer of the year for 2010 means a lot to me.
I don’t get to fight at home and so my Philly fans don’t really get to see me fight, so to be recognized was special.
The event was great, a lot of people came out to show support.
I would like to thank John Di Santo, he works really hard keeping Philly’s boxing history alive and organizing the awards, I appreciate all that he does for Philly boxing.”
Also receiving Briscoe Awards on Monday were, Derek ‘Pooh’ Ennis and ‘King’ Gabriel Rosado, for their classic 12-round war, which received the ‘2010 Philly Fight of the Year’. Ennis won the fight, but both boxers rightly won the ‘Briscoe’.
Dhafir Smith won a special Briscoe Award for his ‘Upset of the Year’, for his magnificent victory over former world champion Jeff Lacy. Smith defied all odds by going onto Lacy's own back yard to battle his way to a major upset victory.
Amateur star Damon Allen, Jr. won the ‘Everett Brothers Award’ which is presented by Eddie Everett and Mike Everett in the name of their deceased brother Tyrone and their family's great boxing tradition.

The Dream Team - Naazim Richardson Training Steve ‘USS’ Cunningham For Title Challenge
The battle between two former Cruiserweight World Champions, Steve ‘USS’
Cunningham (IBF) and Wayne ‘Big Truck’ Braithwaite (WBC), is a mouth
watering prospect in itself, but when you add into the equation that the
winner will earn the right to face current Champion, Tomasz ‘Goral’
Adamek, in the mandatory defense of his IBF title later this year, you
just know that it’s going to be one seriously exciting, all-action affair
with “Fight of the Year” potential plastered all over it in capital
letters.
Now if that isn’t enough to get every boxing fan salivating at the
prospect, the heavily armed destroyer, ‘USS’ Cunningham, announces that he
has added even bigger guns to his already power packed arsenal by
enlisting, “Trainer of the Year” and fight strategy maestro, Naazim
Richardson, to prepare him for the fight.
Richardson, without doubt the hottest property in the business today after
masterminding and coaching the magnificent victories of Bernard Hopkins
over Kelly Pavlik and ‘Sugar’ Shane Mosley over Antonio Margarito - in the
latter also famously discovering the tampering of Margarito’s wraps, has
been working with ‘USS’ Cunningham since March this year, at The James
Shuler Memorial Gym in West Philadelphia, as the former Cruiserweight
King prepares for his long awaited IBF title eliminator against former WBC
Cruiserweight Champion Wayne ‘Big Truck’ Braithwaite, which will be on the
under card of the Joseph Agbeko-Vic Darchinian Bantamweight title fight,
on July 11th.
A clearly pleased ‘USS’ Cunningham expressed his delight at having Brother
Naazim in his corner for the upcoming battle with Guyanan slugger
Braithwaite, "Man, I have known Brother Naazim since the amateurs, I have
always respected him and wanted to work with him, I've known for years
what the boxing world is just now realizing, HE is the best trainer out
there.
I am really excited to be working with him, going to the gym everyday is
like going to college or something... I know his training will take me to
the next level.... If you've liked watching my fights before..stay
tuned..."
Stay tuned, now that’s an understatement! With this being the first time
the all new ‘Dream Team’, of Steve ‘USS’ Cunningham and Brother Naazim
Richardson, going into battle side by side making this is a don’t miss,
not a stay tuned!
Steve ‘USS’ Cunningham vs. Wayne ‘Big Truck’ Braithwaite takes place on
the 11th July 2009. Currently the fight is listed, on BoxRec, as being at
the Bank Atlantic Center, Sunrise, Florida but according to Don King
Productions PR supremo, Alan Hopper, this has yet to be confirmed as the
venue.
See you at the Fights.
Thanks for your time.

‘USS’ Cunningham Steams In To Support Enzo Maccarinelli
Former IBF World Cruiserweight Champion, Steve ‘USS’ Cunningham gives his view on this weekend’s big battle at the M.E.N. Arena in Manchesterbetween Wales’ Enzo ‘Big Mac’ Maccarinelli and American-based Brit Ola‘Kryptonite’ Afolabi for the interim WBO Title. World No. 2 ranked Cruiserweight ‘USS’ Cunningham, who had offered tostep in and face Maccarinelli after Johnathon Banks backed out of their planned date to face Cunningham’s former foe and current IBF champion,Tomasz ‘Goral’ Adamek, relishes the thought of No. 5 World ranked ‘BigMac’ being victorious as he said. “Man, I’m disappointed that I didn’t getto fight Enzo on the fourteenth. It would have been a great fight. Ireally want to fight in England, the fans there are awesome, just like thePolish fans, they’re so enthusiastic. That aside, this is going to be a real banger of a fight. Ola (Afolabi) isan underrated talent. I don’t think this will be as easy as Enzo thinks.Word is Ola can really battle, he’s no walk over. No disrespect to Ola,I’m hoping that Enzo wins though, so he gets a shot at Victor (Emilio Ramirez - Current WBO Champ). After my fight with Wayne (Braithwaite) I’ll get the rematch with Tomasz(Adamek) I still know I am the best Cruiserweight. My motto is “Two TimeIn '09”, I will get my title back, then I’ll go to unify the belts. I’llbe going after all the champions, I’d like nothing more than the firstbeing against Enzo in England. Shoot, that’ll be the fight of theCentury.” The contracts for the IBF World Cruiserweight Title eliminator boutbetween Steve ‘USS’ Cunningham and Wayne ‘Big Truck’ Braithwaite have beensigned and the fight will take place in St Louis, Missouri sometime in thevery near future. The winner earns the right to face current IBF ChampionTomasz ‘Goral’ Adamek later in 2009. See you at the Fights.

‘USS’ Cunningham Hopes Scuppered As Maccarinelli Chooses Ramirez For WBO Title Fight
Steve ‘USS’ Cunningham’s hopes of facing Enzo Maccarinelli in Manchester, England on the 14th March were dashed when promoter, Frank Warren, wrote in his weekly column in the British newspaper, The Sun, that Maccarinelli will now face interim-champion, Victor Ramirez, for the vacant WBO title. On being told the news ‘USS’ Cunningham, the former IBF cruiserweight champion who recently lost his title to Thomas ‘Goral’ Adamek in one ofthe greatest fights of 2008, said: “Man, I thought this would be a greattime to fight Enzo. We tried to put that fight together last summer, butit never happened. I’m ready to dust of my passport, but that’ll have to wait for now. Oh man, It’s a shame. I think it would have been a seriously great fight and I’ve wanted to fight in Britain for a long time. Shoot, I don’t luck getting it on with British fighters. Haye moved to the heavyweights last year and now this chance to face Enzo is shot. You know, one day I will get to fight in Britain or face Enzo. I’m sure it’ll happen. I wish Enzo and Victor Ramirez the best. I’m sure it’ll be a great fight.I didn’t get to see Victor beat Alexander Alexeev, but heard it was agood fight. I’m sure it’ll be a banger, they’re both heavy hitters.” Hopefully it will not be too long before Steve ‘USS’ Cunningham finds his next opponent so that boxing fans will get the chance to watch one of the world’s most exciting boxers in action again. www.usscunningham.com
