Kendall Holt – Holt has developed from unknown prospect, to contender, to championship challenger in three consecutive ShoBox fights. On July 11, relive The Contender Sergio Mora’s dramatic upset win over veteran Vernon Forrest to capture his first world title. NEW YORK- After dominating Paul Williams for 12 rounds and capturing the WBO welterweight title in convincing fashion, Carlos Quintana believes that he is still getting no respect.

Going into their Saturday, June 7 rematch for Quintana’s title on SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING (9 p.m. ET/PT delayed on the west coast), most industry experts have the champion as the underdog to Williams.



In the second fight of the World Championship Doubleheader at the Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, Conn., Vernon Forrest will defend his WBC super welterweight title against Sergio Mora, the winner of the inaugural season of The Contender.



“I feel like the respect people give me is not the respect I deserve,” Quintana said. “I feel like I have to go out and prove myself on June 7 once again.”



Going into their first bout on Feb. 9, 2008, Quintana (25-1, 19 KOs) was a significant underdog. He understands that he needs a great performance on SHOWTIME to quiet the naysayers once-and-for-all.



“Last time I was a 6-1 underdog and this time I am the underdog again,” said the 31-year-old Quintana. “It doesn’t matter. It can be 20-1 for all I care.



“I am stronger and my training has been more intense than it was for the first fight. I know he took me lightly our first time around, so I am training harder and smarter than ever before.”



The result of their first fight was a shock for Williams, who came in with the confidence of an undefeated fighter, and perhaps overlooked Quintana.

Quintana, of Puerto Rico, is 25-1 with 19 knockouts. The only blemish on his record came in a hard-fought bout against Miguel Cotto for the WBA welterweight title on Dec. 2, 2006 on SHOWTIME.

Williams (33-1, 24 KOs), of Augusta, Ga., captured the belt with a close decision over Antonio Margarito, who had made seven successful defenses, on July 14, 2007.

“In the first fight, I just couldn’t get my rhythm,” Williams said. “It prevented me from fighting how I normally fight.

“I just have to get in there and take my title back from him. I’m going in with the mindset of the underdog looking to upset the champion.”

Showtime Fighters Wear Lakers, Celtics Jerseys at N.Y. Press Conf.‏

For the record, both fighters predict that the series will “go the distance” and end in seven games. Mora likes his hometown team, the Lakers, while Forrest, believes that the Celtics will take home pro basketball’s ultimate trophy.

“Both teams have a tradition of greatness and rivalry,” Mora said. “However, the Lakers have youth, a hot bench and are destined to win.”

Joel "Love Child" Julio

Rafael's remark: Facing a skilled opponent in former "Contender" participant Smith in the "Wednesday Night Fights" main event, Julio showed that he is much more than just a big puncher. In fact, now that he is at junior middleweight his power doesn't seem as frightful as it was at welterweight. But Julio has improving boxing skills, good defense, good counterpunching ability and an underrated body attack. This was an impressive victory for the 23-year-old Colombian and former ESPN.com prospect of the year. He started fast, dominated the first half of the fight against a seemingly gun-shy Smith and pressed the action throughout. Eventually, Smith came on and won some of the late rounds, but it was not enough to get past Julio in what was an entertaining and important fight. For Julio, it was his sixth consecutive victory following a decision loss to future welterweight titleholder Carlos Quintana in June 2006. Finally, Julio seems ready to move back into an HBO-level fight against a quality opponent off this win. Given the lack of depth and starpower at 154 pounds, Julio can make some serious noise in the division. Smith, 29, is at a crossroads in his career after losing his second of three fights. Where does he go from here?

Mora (20-0-1, 5 KOs), of Los Angeles, Calif., won The Contender television series on Oct. 15, 2005 with an entertaining and hard-fought split decision over Peter Manfredo, Jr. The fight with Forrest is exactly what Mora has been aiming for and should prove to be his toughest challenge to date.

The Quintana-Williams bout is a rematch of a WBO welterweight title fight that Quintana won in a shocking upset on Feb. 9, 2008. Williams, who came into the fight confident -- perhaps looking past Quintana, an 8-1 underdog -- lost a 12-round unanimous decision by the scores of 116-112 twice and 115-113.

Quintana, of Puerto Rico, is 25-1 with 19 knockouts. The only blemish on his record came in a hard-fought bout to Miguel Cotto for the WBA welterweight title on Dec. 2, 2006 on SHOWTIME.

Williams (33-1, 24 KOs), of Augusta, Ga, captured the belt with a close decision over Antonio Margarito, who had made seven successful defenses, on July 14, 2007.
