Fight Photos: Nonito Donaire and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr’s training techniques ahead of Saturday showdowns
Co-headliners at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas on Saturday, February 4, WBC middleweight world champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr and two-weight world champion Nonito Donaire take on respective challengers Marco Antonio Rubio and Wilfredo Vazquez Jr, the latter for the vacant WBO super bantamweight crown. Chavez Jr and Donaire are pictured below, going through their training regimes, during media days ahead of the elite event.
Fighters at championship level require a coach who is not only a great trainer but also an effective cornerman and, in Robert Garcia, Donaire (27-1-0, 18ko) has both, as is evidenced by the 36-year-old’s calming influence during Donaire’s most recent fight – versus defence-minded Omar Narvaez – where Nonito was frustrated with the Argentine’s tactics. Garcia (above, watching Donaire pound the heavy bag) also brags Brandon Rios, Antonio Margarito and Kelly Pavlik in his academy stable in Oxnard, California.
It is Donaire, though, who is the first to have a high-profile fight in 2012 and, if successful, The Filipino Flash will undoubtedly be Garcia’s biggest star. Robert is one part of a world-class coaching staff who work with Donaire as the Pinoy calls upon Mike Bazzel to aid his strength and conditioning (pictured above left, working the ropes with Nonito). Bazzel is currently tasked with overseeing Donaire’s weight transition from bantamweight to super bantamweight as the fighter makes his 122lb debut this weekend.
One of the most famous conditioners in combat sports, Alex Ariza (above and right) is strength coach to Manny Pacquiao, Amir Khan and Chavez Jr (44-0-1, 31ko). Known for his attention-to-detail to supplementation, Ariza also goes against the grain when it comes to exercising, as demonstrated with his desire to see his athletes go through arduous balance drills (right), using free weights that build practical muscle rather than aesthetic muscle (below right) and striking a heavy bag with a baseball bat (below).
Other members of Chavez Jr’s camp include head coach Freddie Roach, who owns the famous Wildcard Boxing Club in Hollywood and the fighter’s father, Julio Cesar Chavez Sr (pictured above, above the picture of Ariza and Chavez Jr), an all-time great and Mexico’s best prizefighting product. Against Rubio, Chavez Jr takes on a fellow Mexican in what is billed as his toughest opponent to date. Rubio has fists that can put a man to sleep and all five of his 2011 fights – including an upset win over David Lemieux – were won via stoppage.

Rachel Donaire must reject worst coverup since Watergate
Michael Marley
Let’s say that Urbano Antillon comes up short in his third try for a world title at the Home Depot Center (Showtime) on Saturday night. Anyone out there think the Urbane One will excuse a defeat by saying he had a sore mistletoe going back to New Year’s Eve?
Btw, had it been an MMA event, David Haye could have kicked Wladimir Klitschko with his missle toe.
And, what if, Raging Bull style WBA champ Brandon Rios is dethroned somehow by the underdog? Anyone think rough and tumble “Bam Bam” will blame it on weak ankles?
No, I didn’t think so.
Like most punters, I’ve got a feeling Antillon-Rios will provide some bombs bursting in air on each fighter’s face but what if it’s just a good but not great scrap. On the other foot, coming on the (ouch) heels of Haye-WKlit, a mediocre match would be an upgrade for viewers.
But, hey, who told Haye to use the same podiatrist that Mr. Blister, Shane Mosley did?
For the rest of the year, I hope losing fighters can start citing injuries above the kneecap. Let’s give the lowest extremities a rest if you will.
How about some knee “ouchies” or some of the familiar baseball injury, some groin pulls? Or a fighter can claim bursitis in his shoulder like Sonny Liston did in the first bout against Cassius Clay?
Which reminds me, how come Ray “Windmill” White never had to have Tommy John surgery?
Good to hear about the impending remarriage between Filipino Flash Nonito Donaire and Bob Arum and the crew at Top Rank.
Hear they’re just finalizing the details and one important one is how Filipina Flasher, Nonito’s sexy wife Rachel, will have to dress during fight weeks, at press conferences and at ringside.
If you recall a peeved Mr. Arum got on his trumpet and accused Mrs. Donaire of dressing like a strumpet.
Arum was not a happy camper when he learned the Donaires had boarded the Good Ship Golden Boy.
I’m hearing from fashion mavens that, while Rachel has rejected wearing a burqua, she is considering coming to the boxing events dressed as a nun.
“I’m just worried that such attire might be habit forming,” Rachel told a pal in Manila. “Not to mention that I never cared for the penguin look.”
Nunnery wear or what the round card girls wear?
What say you, red-blooded fight fans?
Do you want to see Mrs. Donaire wearing a frilly frock or some other such coverup?
That would be the worst coverup since Watergate.
Which reminds me, what happened to calling disasters “Suchandsuchgate” and so on?
We can label Haye-Klitschko, for historic purposes, Toegate.
Female fashion at ringside works best when less is more, don’t you think?
Well, at least the Donaire and Top Rank have the experiences of their starter marriage to lean in this promotional rematch.
On the serious side, have you noticed I’ve given both Pacquiao and Mayweather the past few days off?
Don’t want to be a Johnny One Note or a Johnny One Toe, for that matter.
It says here “Bam Bam” don’t surf and “Bam Bam” keeps his crown at the Home Depot
Center.
Would it be sarcastic to opine that Robert Garcia’s mouthy charge wants to “nail” Antillon at Home Depot?
Let’s just hope the fight is a lot more “Hammer Time” than what we saw (or in my case, luckily missed due to a fried cable box, thank you Comcast) in Hamburg last weekend.
Haye-Klitschko wasn’t prime heavyweight beef. It was really liver worst.
Ok, don’t forget to tip your waitresses on the way out.
They perform with sore toes and never explain, never complain.

ShoBox: The New Generation Celebrates a Decade of Matching Prospects Tough
In the realm of boxing series, none sticks to its mission statement as closely as the popular ShoBox: The New Generation, which celebrates its 10th anniversary on Friday, July 15, at 11:05 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the West Coast) from Texas Station Gambling Hall & Casino in Las Vegas. The Top Rank-promoted doubleheader will feature a night of junior lightweight action with undefeated Diego Magdaleno (19-0, 7 KOs) squaring off against Alejandro Perez (15-2-1, 10 KOs) and Casey Ramos (13-0, 4 KOs) taking on Joselito Collado (12-0, 3 KOs) in a battle of unbeatens.
10th Anniversary Highlights, Stats and Facts …
ShoBox: The New Generation – The Mission
Televise a boxing series to serve as a proving ground for hungry, willing prospects. Thrust young up-and-comers from the anonymity of undercards to the glare of the national spotlight. Match each fighter against his toughest opponent to date and, in the process, expose untested hopefuls – but more importantly – build future champions.
For the last decade, ShoBox has garnered critical acclaim and industry respect by adhering to its central purpose: featuring prospects in pivotal fights where padding the win column stops and their true road to contender status begins. The series is so well defined that it has been added to the boxing lexicon. As characterized by Wikipedia, a “ShoBox fighter” refers to a “quality prospect primed for tougher competition.”
SHOWTIME implemented this decidedly boutique approach with the overall picture in mind.
“Creating a platform for young fighters is something that is not only important to SHOWTIME, but to the sport of boxing generally,” said Ken Hershman, Executive Vice President & General Manager, SHOWTIME Sports®. “With ShoBox, we seek out prospects that are willing to challenge themselves with high-risk bouts in exchange for national exposure. It’s a win-win for all involved, including our subscribers who get the entertainment of competitive fights and an introduction to the new generation of future champions.”
A staggering 87 fighters who fought on ShoBox moved on to challenge for a world title, with 42 of those fighters becoming world champions. The first future champ to emerge from ShoBox dates back to the series’ initial telecast on July 21, 2001. Leonard Dorin scored a ninth-round TKO over fellow unbeaten Martin O’Malley. Two fights later, Dorin was a world champion. With 157 ShoBox telecasts and 42 eventual world titlists, ShoBox enjoys a rough average of featuring a future champion every fourth show.

Juan Urango (13-0) vs. Mike Arnaoutis (10-0-1) – D 12 – Aug. 5, 2004
The Hall Recall: “This fight was an all-out war that ended in a draw and is a classic example of two undefeated, talented fighters facing each other early in their careers on ShoBox.”
Robert Guerrero (16-0-1) vs. Gamaliel Diaz (19-5-2) – Diaz SD 12 Guerrero – Dec. 2, 2005
The Hall Recall: “A perfect example of a ShoBox fight where the young fighter is tested by the more seasoned fighter who had experience going into the later rounds and could move. Robert lost the fight in a split decision, but more importantly, he learned from the defeat, went on to avenge the loss on ShoBox and later won a world title.’’
Tim Bradley (21-0) vs. Junior Witter (36-1-3) – Bradley SD 12 Witter – May 10, 2008
The Hall Recall: “Before challenging for the junior welterweight title in Witter’s U.K. backyard, Bradley had never fought outside of California and was coming off the longest layoff of his career. Bradley’s knockdown of Witter in the sixth round was the turning point in the fight and he went on to win a split decision. Bradley developed in his three previous ShoBox appearances, which helped put him in position for this fight – where he became the first ShoBox fighter to win his title on ShoBox.’’
Marcus Johnson (20-0) vs. Dyah Davis (18-2-1) – Davis UD 10 Johnson;
Danny O’Connor (14-0) vs. Gabriel Bracero (14-0) – Bracero UD 8 O’Connor;

The Hall Recall: “Three talented and touted prospects walked into the ring undefeated and walked out with a loss. And all on the same night… now that’s what I’m talking about!”

SecondsOut Radio: Nonito Donaire and Brian Viloria Reviews, Carl Froch- Jermain Taylor Preview, Tor Hamer and Shawn Raysor
Jermain Taylor Preview, Tor Hamer and Shawn Raysor on Today's
Heavyweights
On this week's edition of SecondsOut Radio, host Eddie Goldman begins
by reviewing the two major title fights held Sunday morning, April 19,
at the famed Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City in the Philippines.
On that card, Nonito Donaire (21-1, 14 KOs) successfully defended his
IBF flyweight title by dominating previously-unbeaten Raul Martinez
(24-1, 14 KOs), knocking him down four times, and scoring a fourth-
round TKO. The co-feature saw an aggressive Brian Viloria (25-2, 15
KOs) upset Ulises Solis (28-2, 20 KOs) with an 11th-round knockout to
capture the IBF light flyweight title. This was the best a rejuvenated
Viloria had looked in a long time, and this spirited fight, in which
Solis came back in the middle rounds, could earn a Fight of the Year
nomination.
One fighter who is trying hard to gain recognition is 26-year old
heavyweight Tor Hamer (5-0, 4 KOs). His next fight will be against an
opponent to be named on the Andre Berto-Juan Urango undercard May 30
at the Hard Rock Live in Hollywood, Florida. We had a chance at a news
conference this past week at the new Yankee Stadium to speak with Tor
Hamer and his trainer, Shawn Raysor, about his career, why American
heavyweights are no longer at the top of that division, why so many
American heavyweights seem out of shape, and more.
This coming Saturday, April 25, the unbeaten WBC super middleweight
champion Carl Froch (24-0, 19 KOs) of Nottingham, England, travels to
America to defend his title against the former middleweight champion,
Jermain Taylor (28-2-1, 17 KOs), of Little Rock, Arkansas. This fight
will take place at the MGM Grand Theater at Foxwoods Resort Casino in
Mashantucket, Conn. It will be televised live in the U.S. on Showtime.
We had a chance on a recent media conference call to speak with both
Carl Froch and Jermain Taylor about this fight.
It is free to listen to or download SecondsOut Radio, but you must
register to gain access to it. Just click here, http://www.secondsout.com/radio/,
