From left to right: Joseph King Kong Agbeko and Abner Mares pose together at their announcement press conference in Las Vegas.
International Boxing Federation (IBF) Bantamweight Champion Joseph King Kong Agbeko and undefeated rising star and World Boxing Council (WBC) Silver 118-pound Champion Abner Mares participated in a media conference call on Tuesday to discuss The Bantamweight Tournament Final: Winner Takes All taking place on Saturday, August 13, live on SHOWTIME (10 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the West Coast) from The Joint at Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, Nev.
Agbeko (28-2, 22 KOs), of Accra, Ghana, will defend his IBF title against the fast-rising, Mares (21-0-1, 13 KOs), of Hawaiian Gardens, Calif. by way of Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico, in the tournament final. Mares’ WBC Silver bantamweight belt will also be on the line.
The world championship fight is promoted by Don King Productions and Golden Boy Promotions and is sponsored by Corona.
JOSEPH KING KONG AGBEKO:
“I would like to thank SHOWTIME for the new date which is Aug. 13 due to my injury. I thank my promoters too at Don King Productions for waiting for me to heal and to get ready for this fight. I’m so looking forward to this fight and thanks to God for it is finally coming off and I’m ready for it.
“This is a very big fight. Everyone is watching and people will know after you win this fight that you are the best in the world. That’s what I strive to achieve in my career: to be the best in the world at this weight class and then move on to the next one.”
What was the difference in the first time you fought Yonnhy Perez and the second?
“Well, in the first fight I don’t think I had a lot of time to prepare for the fight. I came into the ring slow and started out that way. That first fight just did not go well for me due to a few issues. So I came back and was able to do better the next fight.”
Did you fear after suffering your sciatic injury that your career might be finished?
“When I had the injury the only thing that I was worried about was the fight that I had coming up. I knew definitely that it wouldn’t affect my career. My main concern was disappointing every one because I knew I couldn’t fight. I knew everyone was counting on me. All my fans and family in Ghana were depending on me. I didn’t want to let anyone down.”
Was there ever any indication on why you had the sciatic injury you suffered?
“Yeah, they said it could really happen to anyone because of the time that the flight was delayed at the airport and the time I spent not moving on the plane for the six hours from New York to L.A. It doesn’t happen every day but the people at the hospital knew because they are so close to the airport. It does happen to people sitting on a plan for a long time.”
Did it affect your preparation for this fight?
“Yes, I think since I had to start all over again. I took some time off but then I was able to come back and I’ve been working on my speed and everything else for this fight.
“I’ve been on conference calls for SHOWTIME before and this is definitely the most relaxed one because I wasn’t asked a lot of questions. So I was very relaxed because I didn’t have to answer a lot of questions. This fight has been very hyped and I’m hoping to come out the winner on Aug. 13.”
ABNER MARES:
“We are getting close to this fight that I’ve been waiting for for quite some time. The fight got cancelled back in April and now we’re less than 13 days away. I’m ready to do this.”
What’s more important in this fight, winning the tournament or winning the world title?
“I think they are both important. For me it would be my first title so it has big significance but the SHOWTIME Tournament is also important because you have faced two of the greatest bantamweights out there so for me winning this tournament it means you’ve only beaten the best. You can take pride in knowing you beat only the elite fighters in their prime in your weight class.”
How do you compare Agbeko and Yonnhy Perez?
“Well, Agbeko and Yonnhy have two different styles. I had a draw against Yonnhy in a fight a lot of people thought I won. He was the world champion at the time. If anything I won in that fight because I learned a whole lot. And I was able to show that in my next fight against Vic Darchinyan. They are both such different fighters. The only similar thing is that I was fighting for the IBF title against Yonnhy and now I’m doing it again. So I definitely don’t want to lose or have a draw in this fight.”
What was your reaction when the April fight was called off?
“At the moment I heard that the fight might be cancelled and that there might be another opponent I was happy, but I was not mentally happy. I was getting ready for a world title fight and whoever stepped in it would not be for a world title. Just another 12-round fight. Yeah, I was ready and yeah it might make sense and I could have gone the 10 or 12 rounds with whoever they put in there but I was kind of mentally disappointed. So I didn’t want to take that risk. I had more to lose than to win so saying that, the whole camp just decided to wait for Agbeko. He made it to the finals and it’s only right to fight him for the SHOWTIME Bantamweight title.”
Are you aware of the fact that you have the chance to become Golden Boy’s first homegrown fighter to start your career with them and win a world title? What does that mean to you?
“It means a whole lot to me. I’ve said this before: Golden Boy is not just my promoter but also my family. I get along with everyone so well. From Monica (Sears) to David (Itskowitch), the entire staff. We go out to lunch and outside the ring everyone is so nice and just like family. So winning this fight I’ll be the first Golden Boy fighter to start from scratch and become world champion so that would mean a whole lot for me. And I know it would mean a whole lot to Golden Boy Promotions. We’re a big happy family and we would all win that night.”
Have you had to change much in your preparation since the fight was called off to now?
“I’ve had to change everything, even sparring partners and the place we were training. Once the fight was cancelled I said let’s move on. I took three weeks off and didn’t think about boxing at all. Then I got right back in the gym and the first thing we did was to plan a trip to Guadalajara and we trained out there for three weeks. It was something different. I wanted a whole new environment. Just changed everything. I didn’t want the whole team over again for another three months. That helped a lot. Now we are in a different gym here in Santa Fe Springs which is really nice. The people and the atmosphere are great. I’ve actually had fans come over here to watch me train and talk to me and I’ve never had that before. We changed everything and I’m very happy it went so quick.”
If you win this fight, will you be the best in the division?
“This tournament is made up of the best bantamweights. A lot of fighters had the opportunity to get in it and some chose not to for whatever reasons. We definitely deserve to be called the best bantamweight out there. There are a lot of great and top pound-for-pound bantamweights out there. After this fight we should be called the best then after this, other fights can be made. Let’s do it. But I think myself and Agbeko have proven that we are here and we will fight anyone and we should be recognized as the best.”
Did you change your approach or game plan since the cancellation?
“No, not really. Same game plan. I had a lot of people ask me since he got injured, am I going to do it differently now? No. If I did that that would only make me think he was not fully healthy and that he wasn’t going to perform the same. I know he had the back problem and it’s all cured and I think mentally he knows it’s cured so I don’t want to think about it again.”
How do you stay motivated after such a let down as the cancellation was?
“As a fighter in my young career I’ve already been through so many ups and downs that maybe a veteran hasn’t even gone through yet with my detached retina, with this fight being cancelled and with me getting a draw in my first world title. But, you know, it only makes me stronger. It only motivates me more. Things happen for a reason. When I saw Agbeko at the podium the next day and he was limping I was actually thinking it was such a freak thing that I was glad it hadn’t happened to me. Things happen. It happened. I took off with my family for vacation for three weeks and I’ve come back stronger. I was able to go back to Guadalajara where I’m from and I had a great camp and it went by so quick. The preparation I’ve had for this fight was just fun and the same emotion and focus and will to become a world champion.”
Was your camp better than it was for the April fight?
“I’m honestly going to say, yes, it was.”
What was your initial reaction to the cancellation?
“I just felt bad. My parents always taught me not to feel sorry for the guy on the boxing side but I generally felt bad on the human side. He just looked like an old guy limping with the cane. I thought, man, this could be the end of his career. It was like me with my detached retina and when they told me my career could possibly be over. Plus, I have some family members who have had the same injury and they told me it was really painful so I just felt bad for Agbeko. That’s why we gave him a second chance and we thank God he’s better and that he can continue what he loves doing and that’s boxing.”

Don King Summer Sizzler Showcases Hard Punchers at BankAtlantic Center On Saturday, July 11
SUNRISE, Fla.—Two of the hardest-hitting boxers in the world will meet when International Boxing Federation bantamweight champion Joseph King Kong Agbeko defends his crown against two-division world champion Vic “Raging Bull” Darchinyan at BankAtlantic Center on Saturday, July 11 and on SHOWTIME at 9 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the West Coast). The championship is scheduled for 12 rounds.
The televised co-feature will showcase two world-ranked No. 4 contenders when emerging lightweight Antonio DeMarco (20-1, 14 KOs), from Tijuana, Mexico, meets Anges “Baby Face” Adjaho (25-1, 14 KOs), from Benin, Africa, now fighting out of Geneva, N.Y.
The event is promoted by Don King Productions in association with BankAtlantic Center. Agbeko vs. Darchinyan and DeMarco vs. Adjaho are co-promoted with Gary Shaw Productions.
Both main event fighters possess eye-popping knockout percentages. Agbeko (26-1, 22 KOs) from Accra, Ghana, now fighting out of Bronx, N.Y., has knocked out over 81 percent of his opponents with Darchinyan (32-1, 26 KOs), from Sydney, Australia, by way of Armenia, right behind him at 76 percent.
The Aussie bomber is a four-time world champion at flyweight and super flyweight. He will leave his IBF, WBC and WBA titles at 115 pounds behind to move up to the 118-pound limit to face the champion. If victorious, Darchinyan will become a three-division world champion.
The Ghanaian powerhouse gave a gritty performance to win his world title, scoring a seventh-round technical knockout over Luis “El Demoledor” Perez—a tough-as-nails Nicaraguan who had been champion since 2003—at ARCO Arena in Sacramento, Calif., on Sept. 29, 2007.
“I’ve seen stronger fighters than Darchinyan,”Agbeko said defiantly. “I respect him for what he has accomplished but I don’t think he has the true heart to beat me and take my punches.
“This fight will be the genesis of King Kong and the defining moment of why my parents named me this at birth. This is my destiny.”
The brash Darchinyan sees a different outcome.
“Agbeko may have seen stronger fighters than me but I guarantee you he has never fought any of them,” Darchinyan retorted. “The only thing he and King Kong have in common is they are both works of fiction. After I’m through with him he’ll have to change his name to King Con.”
Both fighters only have one loss each. Agbeko lost his second professional fight and has not lost since—24 wins in a row—while Darchinyan was shocked by flyweight Nonito “Filipino Flash” Donaire on July 7, 2007, in Bridgeport, Conn., who landed a fight-changing left hook in round five that lead to a technical knockout.
The loss came in Darchinyan’s first appearance after a traumatic 12th-round stoppage of Victor Burgos on March 3, 2007, at Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif. Darchinyan had been dominant in the contest but was taken by surprise when Burgos was rushed to a nearby hospital after the match suffering from a brain injury. Heroic efforts by doctors saved Burgos’s life, but he will never box again.
Darchinyan moved up to super flyweight, winning the IBF title by fifth-round knockout over Dimitri Kirilov on Aug. 2. He added the World Boxing Association and World Boxing Council 115-pound crowns with a thrilling knockout over favored Cristian Mijares in round nine on Nov. 1 in Carson, Calif.
In his last appearance, Darchinyan was yet again dominant in a highly anticipated match against Mexican strongman Jorge Arce at the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif., on Feb. 7. Clearly the best fighter in the world at 115 pounds, Darchinyan pounded Arce for 11 rounds until the referee halted the beating.
Although a champion himself, King Kong will be in the toughest challenge of his career against the Raging Bull, who is currently listed near the top of the top pound-for-pound best boxer lists.
The co-feature is a pivotal matchup for DeMarco, 23, and Adjaho, 32, with ramifications for the entire lightweight division. Both are near the top of the world rankings with only one career loss each and an identical number of knockouts at 14.
DeMarco, ranked No. 4 by the WBA, is the younger, more visible contender with multiple television appearances and hasn’t lost in his last 14 fights. While this will be Adjaho’s first television appearance in the United States, he grew up in boxing gyms as his father was a national boxing coach in Benin, Africa.
A child prodigy who compiled a stellar amateur record of 164-3, Adjaho, ranked No. 4 by the IBF, claims to have never been knocked down as an amateur or as a professional. Adjaho disputes his lone loss, a split decision, which came against Miguel Acosta in 2007 even though Acosta hit the deck twice during the fight.
In domestically non-televised action, fans at BankAtlantic Center will be treated to a full undercard highlighted by an important IBF elimination bout (for No. 1 and mandatory challenger) between former cruiserweight world champions Steve “USS” Cunningham (21-2, 11 KOs), from Philadelphia, and Wayne “Big Truck” Braithwaite (23-3, 19 KOs), from Guyana now fighting out of Brooklyn, N.Y.
Cunningham lost his IBF cruiserweight title at the hands of former light heavyweight world champion Tomasz Adamek in one of last year’s most memorable fights. In fact, the Boxing Writers Association of America designated the fight as one of the five nominees for “Fight of the Year” in 2008. The match took place at Prudential Center in Newark, N.J., on Dec. 11.
Cunningham suffered three early knockdowns from the heavy-handed Adamek, but many felt he should have been declared the victor after 12 rounds, but Adamek won the split decision.
Braithwaite won the WBC cruiserweight title in 2002 by defeating Vincenzo Cantatore, and he successfully defended that title three times before suffering a decision loss to Jean-Marc Mormeck in 2005.
Big Truck has also tangled with the likes of future world champions Guillermo Jones and Enzo Maccaranelli in 2005 and 2007, respectively. Always dangerous, Braithwaite would like nothing more than to earn another shot at a world title.
Also appearing will be undefeated and rising Cuban prospect Angelo “La Cobra” Santana (5-0, 4 KOs).
See you at the Fights.
Thanks for your time.

Huge SHOWTIME Boxing Weekend Begins Feb. 6 With Andre Ward-Buchanan On ShoBox
One day before Vic Darchinyan risks his IBF/WBC/WBA super flyweight belts against former world champion Jorge Arce on SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING, undefeated, world-ranked Andre Ward will defend his NABO super middleweight title against once-beaten Henry Buchanan on Friday, Feb. 6, on ShoBox The New Generation (11 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the west coast).
The ShoBox event, presented by Goossen Tutor Promotions, will originate from The Tachi Palace Hotel & Casino at Lemoore, Calif.
The only boxer from the United States to capture a gold medal at the 2004 Olympic Games, Ward, of Oakland, Calif., will bring a record of 17-0 with 12 knockouts into the 12-round main event. This will be his third appearance on ShoBox.
Ward, who captured the NABO belt with an eighth-round TKO over Jerson Ravelo on June 20, 2008, on ShoBox, is highly ranked by the four major organizations. He is No. 3 in the WBC and WBO, No. 10 in the WBA and No. 14 in the IBF.
Buchanan, of Chesterfield, S.C., is 17-1 with 12 KOs. He has won three in a row, including a ninth-round knockout over Brian Norman on June 25, 2008.
In his ShoBox debut on July 28, 2006, Buchanan, the nephew of San Diego Chargers Pro Bowl linebacker Shawne Merriman, triumphed via 10th-round disqualification over Lucas Green-Arias.
On Saturday, Feb. 7, the eagerly anticipated world title fight between Darchinyan (31-1-1, 25 KOs), of Sydney, Australia, and Arce (51-4-1, 39 KOs), of Los Mochis, Mexico, will highlight a telecast that begins at 9 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the west coast).
In the Feb. 7 co-feature on SHOWTIME, Antonio DeMarco (19-1-1, 13 KOs) of Tijuana, Mexico, will take on Almazbek “Kid Diamond” Raiymkulov (27-1-1, 15 KOs) in a 12-rounder for the NABO lightweight title from Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif.

A LIGHTWEIGHT SHOWDOWN:Antonio DeMarco-Kid Diamond Clash In Showtime Feb. 7 Co-Feature At Honda Center
NEW YORK– Before fan favorite Vic Darchinyan (31-1-1, 25 KOs) puts his International Boxing Federation (IBF), World Boxing Council (WBC) and World Boxing Association (WBA) super flyweight titles on the line against the popular, crowd pleasing Jorge Arce (51-4-1, 39 KOs) on Feb. 7, 2009, boxing fans will feast on a spectacular co-feature that will no doubt whet their appetite for the main event later that evening.
Vic Darchinyan
No. 5 ranked WBC lightweight challenger Antonio DeMarco (19-1-1, 13 KOs) will take on “Kid Diamond” Almazbek Raiymkulov (27-1-1, 15 KOs) in a 12-round lightweight bout for the North American Boxing Organization (NABO) title on Saturday, Feb. 7, live on SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING (SHOWTIME, 9 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the west coast)
Both 12-round fights are co-promoted by Gary Shaw Productions, LLC, and Bob Arum’s Top Rank, Inc., and will take place at the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif.
DeMarco, who had three ShoBox victories in 2008, is known for his aggressiveness and speed. The rangy southpaw is coming off a hard fought, split decision victory over Jose Reyes and while he is taking a big step up in opposition against Raiymkulov, the Mexico native is not worried.
"I already know every facet of Kid Diamond's style because I've been studying his fight videos," DeMarco said. "On Feb. 7, boxing fans will see that diamonds aren’t forever."
Shaw, who has two fighters on the telecast (DeMarco and Darchinyan) going up against two of Arum’s fighters (Arce and Raiymkulov), agrees.
"Tony DeMarco is the real gem of the lightweight division,” Shaw said. “He's going to prove it on SHOWTIME when he leaves Diamond in the roughest shape of his life.”
Raiymkulov, who was an Olympic representative for the former Soviet Republic of
Kyrgyzstan, is a crafty boxer with a solid left jab. His only defeat came in 2005 against current IBF, WBA and World Boxing Organization (WBO) lightweight champion Nate Campbell.
Raiymkulov feels his power punch will be the difference. "I am working hard in the gym preparing for my fight against DeMarco,” he said. “He is a good champion but I have a lot more thunder in my punching. He will find that out on Feb 7. I do not expect this fight to go 12 rounds -- not the way I hit."
SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING announcers Gus Johnson and Al Bernstein will call the action from ringside with Jim Gray and Karyn Bryant reporting from ringside. The executive producer of SHOWTIME Sports is David Dinkins Jr., with Bob Dunphy directing.
See you at the Fights.

DARCHINYAN TO DEFEND AGAINST ARCE ON SATURDAY, FEB. 7, ON SHOWTIME
NEW YORK– A must-see matchup that fans, media and the fighters themselves have been clamoring for will take place when two of boxing’s biggest little men and hardest punchers, Vic Darchinyan and Jorge Arce, clash on Saturday, Feb. 7, 2009, live on SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING (SHOWTIME, 9 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the west coast).
Darchinyan’s newly acquired 115-pound International Boxing Federation (IBF), World Boxing Council (WBC) and World Boxing Association (WBA) world titles will be on the line.
Vic Darchinyan
The once-beaten Darchinyan (31-1-1, 25 KOs), of Sydney, Australia, by way of Armenia, will be making his first defense since unifying the 115-pound division with a demonstrative ninth-round knockout over Mexico’s Cristian Mijares Nov. 1, 2008, on SHOWTIME.
Darchinyan, who entered the ring as the IBF champion, walked out with Mijares’ WBC and WBA belts after blowing away the favored champion in a career-defining performance.
The popular, crowd-pleasing Arce (51-4-1, 39 KOs), of Los Mochis, Sinaloa, Mexico, is the current WBA interim super flyweight champion and is a former WBC 115-pound and WBO 108-pound titleholder.
Arce has been victorious in five consecutive fights, including a fourth-round TKO over Isidro Garcia Nov. 1, 2008, to capture the interim WBA strap, and has won 31 out of his last 32. The only loss during his scintillating run came on a 12-round decision to Mijares on April 14, 2007.
The 12-round world title fight, co-promoted by Gary Shaw Productions, LLC, and Bob Arum’s Top Rank, Inc., will take place at a site to be announced.

HOW THEY PICK ‘EM: MOST EXPERTS THINK MIJARES IS CLEAR FAVORITE TO DEFEAT DARCHINYAN AND UNIFY TITLE
SHOWTIME Media Prediction Poll: Mijares Is The Clear Choice Over Darchinyan On SHOWTIME
LOS ANGELES, Calif– Both WBA and WBC super flyweight champion Cristian Mijares and IBF 115-pound kingpin Vic Darchinyan will look to add to their belt collection when they square off in a highly anticipated world title unification fight in the main event this Saturday, Nov. 1, live on SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING at 9 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the West Coast).
So who is going to triumph? The experts think Mijares is too skilled a boxer to let the power-punching Darchinyan beat him.
Of the 32 boxing media members who participated in a SHOWTIME Prediction Poll, 26 picked Mijares and six liked Darchinyan.
Here’s how they see the Mijares-Darchinyan world title unification fight:
Robert Morales, Los Angeles Daily News/Long Beach Press Telegram (Mijares): “Mijares is a more technically sound fighter. He is going to frustrate the wild-swinging Darchinyan. Mijares will wind up hurting him late with counter shots. Not sure he will stop Darchinyan, but he might.”
Kevin Iole, Yahoosports.com (Mijares): “Mijares is a brilliant boxer. Darchinyan throws wide punches and Mijares will have no problem seeing them and getting out of the way of them. It should be a boxing clinic by one of the game's best-kept secrets. Mijares wins by decision in 12 rounds.”
J. Michael Falgoust, USA Today (Mijares): “Mijares is a terrific boxer, but Darchinyan's boxing skills leave much to be desired. Darchinyan has a puncher's chance, of course, because Mijares sometimes nullifies his height. He is often found bending over at the waist which obviously gives up his height advantage, and other times he stands too tall and in range of an opponent. That said, Darchinyan is not without a chance, but Mijares wins a decision.”
Steve Kim, MaxBoxing.com, (Mijares): “Not only do I think that Mijares is a master boxer, he's also the natural 115-pounder. Mijares will outpoint the puncher (Darchinyan).”
Tim Smith, New York Daily News (Mijares): “Darchinyan is a good fighter but the thing I don't like about him is the thing that makes him good: his fool-hardy aggressiveness. Mijares will take advantage and win by seventh-round TKO.”
Dan Rafael, ESPN.com (Mijares): “This could be a lot like Mijares' fight against another hard-puncher, Jorge Arce. Darchinyan is an exciting, aggressive guy but Mijares is more skillful, faster and knows how to avoid punches. Simply, he is a much better overall fighter. Mijares wins a lopsided decision in what probably will still be an exciting fight to watch.”
Steve Farhood, SHOWTIME (Mijares): “Mijares wins all 12 rounds. It's about time American fans came to realize just how good this guy is.”
Chris Cozzone, Fightnews.com (Mijares): “Darchinyan has already shown flaws against a superior boxer. I believe Mijares has the chin to check anything Darchinyan throws at him. Mijares by decision.”
Michael David Smith, AOL (Mijares): “Darchinyan has good punching power for a man his size. I wouldn't be surprised if he sends Mijares to the canvas. But Mijares is the best boxer under 120 pounds in the world and he will wear Darchinyan down over 12 rounds and win a decision.”
Paul Upham, SecondsOut.com (Darchinyan): “Mijares should be the favorite going in, but Darchinyan’s aggressive nature and punching power have been irresistible on all occasions which is one of the reasons why SHOWTIME has taken such a liking to the Raging Bull from Armenia. Mijares’ skills and toughness should give Darchinyan some problems, but if Vic detonates one of his power shots, the Mexican will need to be strong to resist the KO. Darchinyan wins a close points decision.”
Ramon Aranda, 411mania.com (Mijares): “This one could go either way especially with Darchinyan's awkward style and punishing bombs. Vic could very well stun Mijares early in the fight but with Mijares' increasingly proficient boxing skills, he'll weather Darchinyan's storm and outbox him for the remainder of the bout. Mijares will win by a comfortable margin.”
Darius Ortiz, ESPN.com (Darchinyan): “If Cristian Mijares thinks he'll handle Vic Darchinyan the same way he did Jorge Arce, he has a whole other thing coming. Darchinyan throws punches from angles and positions that no Mijares sparring partner can possibly replicate. I say the Armenian pit bull sinks his teeth into Mijares by the middle rounds and takes him down in the ninth.”
Jake Donovan, Boxingscene.com (Mijares): “Not to take anything away from Darchinyan, who still remains one of the best fighters in the lower weight classes, but Mijares is in another league and enjoying a Fighter of the Year campaign. He should prove to be far too resourceful for Vic. This will be a more competitive version of Mijares-Arce, but still a clear-cut win for Mijares. Mijares by unanimous decision.”
Michael Swann, 15 Rounds.com (Mijares): “Cristian Mijares is a talented stylist who is in his prime at 27. Vic Darchinyan is all offense and can end it with one punch but, at age 32, will he be able to avoid the shots before he delivers? Mijares scores a unanimous decision.”
Phil Woolever, TheSweetScience.com (Darchinyan): “While it's no stretch of the imagination to foresee Mijares pitching a southpaw shutout, I think that being derailed and defeated strengthened Darchinyan's resolve to the point he'll be able to work his way in effectively enough to win.”
Scott Swerbinsky, TheClevelandFan.com (Mijares): “This is potentially the fight of the year.
Speed and counter punching will be the difference. Mijares by a close, hard-fought decision.”
Daxx Kahn, Saddoboxing.com ((Mijares): “In his bout with Nonito Donaire, Darchinyan was exposed on his ability to deal with a clever boxer that has solid whiskers. While Mijares is not a big puncher, he has a solid chin and counters well. Look for Mijares to fight smart and land counter punches, using Darchinyan's jerky style to his advantage. Mijares wins a unanimous decision.”
Rob Scott, Doghouseboxing.com (Darchinyan): “Mijares has the boxing ability much like (Nonito) Donaire, but he also has to have his mental stability as well. He will be hit harder than he probably ever has. Once hit, Mijares must not fold, but stay with the game plan of chipping away at Darchinyan's armor. It's Mijares' fight to win or lose because a good boxer can beat a good puncher. Mijares will step up his game, but it's Darchinyan's great punching power that will prevail. Darchinyan wins by decision – or possible late stoppage.”
Neil Fletcher, British-Weekly.com (Mijares): “Mijares is a good boxer with excellent movement. Darchinyan is a power punching southpaw who must chase his opponent down and land his left to be effective. Too close to call with any certainty, but the call is Mijares by decision.”
Lyle Fitzsimmons, Sportsnetwork.com (Mijares): “Darchinyan is clearly the puncher and is more likely to record a highlight-reel victory, but absent of that, I can see Mijares simply confusing and out-skilling him. If he avoids the fireworks early, look for him to spread the margin in the homestretch. Mijares records a decision.”
Jason Jackson, Boxingconfidential.com (Mijares): “Mijares will use his superior defensive skills to neutralize Darchinyan’s powerful left hand and take a unanimous decision.
Elisa Harrison, Braggingrightscorner.com (Mijares): It's hard to pick a winner because both men are talented and each has a specific forté. So, do you pick the boxer or the puncher? SHOWTIME is showing what the fights fans want to see and this one should not disappoint. Mijares wins a hard-fought decision.’’
Ernest Gabion, BoxingScene.com (Mijares): “Vic has something to prove, but instead of it being an asset it will be a hindrance as he will try and press a supreme boxer. Mijares will take Vic’s aggression and nullify most of it with countering. Mijares wins by unanimous decision.”
Hesiquio Balderas, El Tuxtepecano (Mijares): “Mijares is going to win because he is a smart boxer who creates angles and openings and can put his combinations together. He is a very smart, technical fighter and also his timing is perfect as he showed against hard punchers such as Alex Muñoz and Jorge Arce. Mijares registers a 12-round decision.”
Dan Hernandez, RingSideReport.com (Darchinyan): “With the heavyweights in such a dismal state, it’s good to see the lower divisions doing their best to be the standard bearers for boxing. Darchinyan’s power, determination and skill level will prevail. A knockout victory would not be a surprise.”
Phil Santos, Overhandright.com (Mijares): “Vic has the punching power but he does not possess the technical skills to outbox Mijares or penetrate his stellar defense. The match will unfold much like Mijares-Arce with Cristian controlling the action and decisively outclassing the ever-aggressive Darchinyan. Mijares unifies the belts by unanimous decision or late stoppage.”
Rusty Rubin, Ringsports.com (Darchinyan): “Darchinyan has been through the wars and will have to work hard to win this tough battle with Mijares. It’s tough action fight and probably will have some blood flowing. I’ll take Darchinyan by a late stoppage.”
Ace Freeman, FightFan.com (Mijares): “This is a classic boxer vs. puncher matchup between two exciting fighters. Mijares is somewhat of a hidden gem when it comes to pound-for-pound discussions, but he will soundly outbox Vic and catch him with some big counter punches en route to a late stoppage.”
Carlos Rivera, Cox3 News (Mijares): “Styles and personalities aside, Mijares will retain his WBC/WBA belts (and capture the IBF) in a decision.”
Diane Bennett, DiamondBoxing.com (Mijares): “It should be an exciting 12 rounds with Mijares bringing his tool box of skills, which include speed, defense and counter punching abilities to the ring to offset the Darchinyan power. Mijares will box his way to a decision victory and keep his six-year unbeaten streak in tack.”
Henry Bedoy, Boxingstars.net (Mijares): “Mijares is simply too fast and crafty for the vulnerable Vic Darchinyan. Mijares by late TKO.”
Michael Amakor, FightKings.com (Mijares): “I will pick the southpaw boxer every day over a banger like Darchinyan. Mijares is younger and appears calmer too. Mijares will win.”

What the fights said Tuesday:
VIC DARCHINYAN
“He is a very good fighter, but when he feels my punches he will feel different. He’s fought some tough guys, but no one like me.
“I know when I’m talking that I will deliver. I’m going to be too much for him. He’s overrated.
“I’ve fought southpaws before. It’s no different for me.
“I’m going to do some boxing. You’re going to see how fast and smart I am on Saturday.
“I’m going to put on a show for my Armenian fans at The Home Depot Center.
“I’m very confident and ready for this fight. I’m ready to fight anyone.
“I think I am the best fighter he has ever, and will ever, fight. His style is an amateur style. I will deliver.
“I want to become the undisputed world champion after this fight.
“On Saturday, you’re going to see a different Vic Darchinyan. I won’t try to take him out with just one punch. You’re going to see a much smarter Vic on Saturday night.
“Mijares is a very good fighter, but that’s OK when you fight someone that doesn’t have the power that I have. He’s fought guys that don’t have my power.
“The Mexican fans are going to support me because they are going to see a warrior. They like to see warriors and they will see it in me on Saturday.
“People pay the money and they want to see exciting fights. I’ll give it to them on Saturday.
“In my one loss my opponent didn’t beat me, I beat myself. You won’t see any of that against Mijares. I’m going to prove that I am focused to be the undisputed world champion.
“All I’m thinking about is this fight. I haven’t been this excited and dedicated since my first world title fight.
“The only fight I wanted was Mijares. I want to fight who everyone thinks is the best so I can prove that I’m the best.”
ANDRE DIRRELL
“I’m well prepared for this fight. I know he is a knockout artist, so I’ve been training with guys who can knock me out. I am mentally and physically prepared.
“I’m in tip-top shape. All I have to do is use what I’ve been working on in training camp and show the viewers on SHOWTIME and the fans at The Home Depot Center that I am an exciting fighter.
“There’s a saying in boxing that goes ‘You can’t knockout everyone.’ I’m not going to take him lightly, but I’m ready.
“Right after this fight I’m looking for a world title. I’m looking to go up the ladder as fast as possible.
“I just want to become the best as soon as possible. I need a big win on Saturday to do that, so you better believe I’m ready.
“Look out. I’m on the map now and I’m going to become No. 1 soon.
VICTOR OGANOV
“He is a good technical boxer and he will be smart in the ring, but I have the muscle and the power. Muscle and power will beat techniques and smarts.
“This is the first time in my career that I have had a great training camp. I’ve been training with Vic (Darchinyan) and it has been going great. I’m very fortunate to be training with Vic. He is a big man with a big heart.
“I know that Saturday night is a big opportunity for me on SHOWTIME. I have not taken this fight lightly.
“I’m going to do the best that I can. I think it’s going to be a good fight.
“We have a good game plan and we will use it.”

SecondsOut Radio: Cristian Mijares, Vic Darchinyan, George Kimball on the Four Kings
On this week's edition of SecondsOut Radio, host Eddie Goldman discusses the present and past of boxing, and its present and past champions. This coming Saturday, November 1, there will be a title unificationbout in one of boxing's most exciting and talented weight classes, the super flyweight division (115 pounds). WBA and WBC champion Cristian Mijares (35-3-2, 13 KOs), of Gomez Palacio, Mexico, will face IBF champion Vic Darchinyan (30-1-1, 24 KOs), of Sydney, Australia, at The Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif. This fight will be telecast live on Showtime in the U.S. We spoke with both Cristian Mijares and Vic Darchinyan on a media conference call this past week about what to expect in this fight. Boxing is also a sport in which you can live simultaneously in thepresent and the past, and sanely, too. A new book by veteran boxing writer George Kimball transports us back into the past by tracing theintertwined careers of Sugar Ray Leonard, Marvelous Marvin Hagler,Thomas Hearns, and Roberto Duran. The book is entitled Four Kings:Leonard, Hagler, Hearns, Duran and the Last Great Era of Boxing(http://www.mcbooks.com/bookstore/product_details.php?id=739). We spoke with George Kimball about his book and the past, present, andfuture of boxing, right before the Oct. 18 Bernard Hopkins-KellyPavlik fight in Atlantic City, and after he had participated in aforum on the book with trainer Emanuel Steward, promoter Bob Arum, andannouncer Larry Merchant. SHOWTIME, America’s No. 1 boxing network, proudly presents three world title fights in three weeks.
It begins this Friday, October 24, when undefeated International Boxing Federation (IBF) super middleweight champion Lucian Bute (22-0, 18KOs) defends his title against once-beaten, No. 1 ranked challenger Librado Andrade (27-1, 21KOs) on ShoBox: The New Generation
Taking place at The Bell Centre in Montreal, Canada, Andrade will step into hostile territory when he enters Bute’s backyard. Bute, a celebrity in Canada, has a massive following. In his last fight on PPV in the province of Quebec, Bute drew an audience of more than one million viewers, according to InterBox, the promoter for Bute. A crowd of approximately 16,000 is expected to witness the live event.
Eights days later on Saturday, Nov. 1, SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING plays host to one of the biggest little fights since Vazquez-Marquez III, when Cristian Mijares, the World Boxing Association (WBA) and World Boxing Council (WBC) super flyweight champion faces the International Boxing Federation (IBF) 115-pound champion Vic Darchinyan in a unification bout. The 12-round fight is only the third unification match in the history of the super flyweight division.
Less than three weeks later, on Friday, Nov. 21, a special edition of ShoBox will feature a world title unification fight between WBA super bantamweight champion Celestino Caballero and unbeaten 122-pound IBF champ Steve Molitor. Caballero and Molitor are two of the most feared boxers in the stacked 122-pound division. Both fighters will be making their sixth defense of their respective crowns.

CRISTIAN MIJARES AND VIC DARCHINYAN PRESS CONFERENCE QUOTES
Los Angeles- History will be made on Saturday, Nov. 1, when World Boxing Association (WBA) and World Boxing Council (WBC) super flyweight world champion Cristian Mijares climbs into the ring to face International Boxing Federation (IBF) world champion Vic “Raging Bull” Darchinyan at the The Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif. Mijares and Darchinyan are fighting in the very first 115-pound World Championship Unification.
The historic showdown is being co-promoted by DiBella Entertainment, KO Entertainment and Gary Shaw Productions and will air live on SHOWTIME beginning at 9 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the West Coast) with a 12-round super middleweight (168 pounds) special attraction – Andre Dirrell vs. Victor Oganov.
Tickets are on sale and are priced starting at $25 to $250 for ringside. Tickets may be purchased at The Home Depot Center Box Office, open 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, and at all Ticketmaster retail ticket locations, as well as www.Ticketmaster.com and Ticketmaster-Charge-by-Phone, by calling 213-480-3232.
CRISTIAN MIJARES
“Darchinyan is talking too much because he’s scared of me. Jorge Arce talked a lot of trash too and I shut him up. I’ll do the same with Darchinyan.
“Everyone knows I’m the smarter fighter. I learn new things all the time. From what I’ve seen, Darchinyan doesn’t grow from fight to fight. What you see is what you get. He’s predictable.
“Some people are saying that this fight could turn into an epic series like the Vazquez-Marquez trilogy. Those fights were extremely close. I don’t see my fight with Darchinyan being close. I expect to win by a comfortable margin.
“Darchinyan is a champion and you have to respect him for that, but he is vulnerable. Nonito Donaire proved that by knocking him out. Darchinyan says he learned from that fight, but he looks like the same fighter to me.
“Both of us are confident of victory. I think Darchinyan is overconfident. They say they’re going to knock me out. That’s not going to happen. I’m too fast, too slick and too smart for that.
“Fighting in Los Angeles is going to be great for me. I love the L.A. area and I have a big following here. Darchinyan has a nice following too with the Armenian population. I’m sure we’ll have a diverse crowd at The Home Depot Center.”
VIC DARCHINYAN
“I didn’t have to take this fight but I’m so glad I did. I will knock him out, there’s no question about it. I will come not just to win. I will knock him out.”
On fighting in front of a pro-Mexican crowd. “It doesn’t matter where I fight him. I’ll fight him anywhere. I’ll fight him in Mexico. Los Angeles has a big Armenian community and I will have tons of support. After the first round the Mexican crowd will be silent. There will be nothing for them to cheer about. I don’t mind coming in being the bad guy. I know most of the fans will be against me but at the end of the night they will be on my side.
“They said Mijares is pound-for-pound the best fighter out there, but after I get finished with him we’ll see what number he is. I’m going to give a lesson to the little boy.
On his style: “I want to show on Nov. 1 my power. I’m a smart fighter but I will knock him out with my power. I know his weaknesses and they will be exposed.
“After I knock him out I don’t want to hear any excuses that he’s still better than me. When I beat him it’s not going to be because he’s no good but because I’m so much better.”
