MIKKEL KESSLER RETURNS JUNE 4 ON SHOWTIME BEFORE LIVE SUPER SIX SEMIFINAL BETWEEN FROCH & JOHNSON‏

FORMER CHAMPION MIKKEL KESSLER RETURNS AGAINST WORLD-RANKED MEHDI BOUADLA SATURDAY, JUNE 4, ON SHOWTIME® Fight From Denmark With Be Televised On Same-Day Delay

Before Carl Froch-Glen Johnson Super Six World Boxing Classic Semifinal Airs LIVE on SHOWTIME (Delayed on the West Coast)

Looking to regain his status as one of the premier super middleweights in the world, former World Boxing Council/World Boxing Association (WBC/WBA) 168-pound champion Mikkel “The Viking Warrior’’ Kessler will return to the ring for the first time in 14 months when he faces Mehdi Bouadla on Saturday, June 4, on SHOWTIME (9 p.m. ET/PT, same-day delay) at Parken Stadium in Copenhagen, Denmark.

The 12-rounder between Kessler (43-2, 32 KOs), of Denmark, and Bouadla (23-3, 11 KOs), of France, will be shown before the LIVE Super Six World Boxing Classic Semifinal on SHOWTIME (delayed on the West Coast) between defending WBC titlist Carl Froch (27-1, 20 KOs) and former world champion Glen Johnson (51-14-2, 35 KOs) of Miami, Fla., at Adrian Philipps Ballroom of Atlantic City’s Boardwalk Hall.

The Super Six announce team of Gus Johnson, Al Bernstein and Antonio Tarver will call the Kessler-Bouadla match from Atlantic City. Steve Farhood will serve as ringside reporter from Denmark.

For Kessler, it will be his first start since a potentially career-ending eye injury forced him to withdraw from the Super Six shortly after he won an exciting 12-round unanimous decision over the previously undefeated Froch on April 24, 2010. A victory puts Kessler, 32, back in the thick of things in the talent-rich 168-pound division. Kessler’s only defeats came against future Hall of Famer, Joe Calzaghe, in November 2007, and to Andre Ward in Group Stage 1 of the Super Six World Boxing Classic on Nov. 21, 2009.

The 29-year-old Bouadla has won 11 in a row dating to February 2008. The No. 5-ranked super middle in the World Boxing Organization (WBO) and 10th-rated contender in the International Boxing Federation (IBF), Bouadla earned a decision over Pavels Lotahs in his most recent start last Jan. 29. Bouadla was slated to challenge defending champion Sebastian Sylvester last Jan. 22 for the IBF middleweight championship, but the fight was postponed after Sylvester suffered a viral infection.

SecondsOut Radio: Ricky Hatton, David Haye, Future of British Boxing

SecondsOut Radio: Ricky Hatton, David Haye, Future of British Boxing

On this week's edition of SecondsOut Radio, host Eddie Goldman focuses
on the top fighters in boxing in the UK today. We compare where the
careers of Joe Calzaghe, Junior Witter, Amir Khan, Ricky Hatton, David
Haye, and Carl Froch were one year ago with where they are today. And
we comment on the thrilling come-from-behind 12th-round TKO victory
Carl Froch scored over Jermain Taylor this past Saturday night, April
25.

Ricky Hatton, of course, will be facing Manny Pacquiao, regarded by
most as the current pound-for-pound king, this coming Saturday night,
May 2, in Las Vegas. This fight will take place at 140 pounds, where
Hatton is presently regarded as the best fighter in the world. We
spoke with a confident Ricky Hatton on a media conference call this
past week to get his take on this fight.

David Haye, the former cruiserweight champion who relinquished his
belts in that division to move up to heavyweight, will get his wish
for a crack at a heavyweight title when he faces the top fighter in
that weight class, Wladimir Klitschko, June 20 in Germany. David Haye
was in New York this past week for a news conference, and we caught up
with him there for some very poignant comments.

Eddie Goldman and Jackie Martling on Joey Reynolds

Eddie Goldman and Jackie Martling on Joey Reynolds

http://nhbnews.podOmatic.com/entry/2008-11-22T11_55_14-08_00

Eddie Goldman of No Holds Barred and SecondsOut Radio and comedian Jackie "The Joke Man" Martling were guests on the nationally-syndicated "Joey Reynolds Show" late Tuesday night/early Wednesday morning, November 18/19. Eddie Goldman is also the boxing correspondent for the "Joey Reynolds Show".

While Jackie provided a healthy dose of his edgy humor, Eddie focused on some serious problems facing boxing which are far from a joke, but are turning that sport into one. Joey and Eddie discussed the continuing problems with the treatment of the media at the Nov. 8 fight between Joe Calzaghe and Roy Jones Jr. at Madison Square Garden, as well as other problems plaguing that sport. But we also had a little time to discuss some good sports news, the revival of roller derby.

The "Joey Reynolds Show" is a national radio broadcast in New York on WOR 710 AM and on 100 other stations via the WOR Network. The show airs live beginning at midnight EDT and runs to 5 AM EDT. For more information on the "Joey Reynolds Show," go to http://wor710.com/pages/46370.php?contentType=4&contentId=157588.

SecondsOut Radio: Calzaghe-Jones and the Decline of American Boxing, with Keisha Morrisey

On this week's edition of SecondsOut Radio, host Eddie Goldman discusses how the November 8 card at Madison Square Garden in New York, headlined by the one-sided drubbing by Joe Calzaghe of Roy Jones Jr., was yet another sign of the long decline of American boxing. We also discuss this theme with Keisha Morrisey (http://keishamorrisey.com), who was there covering the fight.

We discuss the fight itself, the future of Roy Jones Jr. after this loss, why fighters need to learn the boxing business, the poor marketing done to get the fans to know who these fighters are, the failure to reach the urban market, and more. It is free to listen to SecondsOut Radio, but you must register to gain access to it.

Top rated light welterweight contender Frankie Figueroa signs with Square Ring; Fighting Gavin Rees Nov. 8 on Jones-Calzaghe in Madison Square Garden

LAS VEGAS– NABF light welterweight champion Frankie “El Gato” Figueroa has signed a promotional contract with Roy Jones, Jr.’s Square Ring Promotions and the Bronx fighter has been added to the November 8 Jones-Calzaghe HBO PPV card at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

Figueroa (19-2, 13 KOs) has been in Las Vegas training for his Nov. 8th 10-round fight against former WBA light welterweight Gavin “The Rock” Rees (27-1, 13 KOs). “Fighting Rees is a phenomenal first step for me by my new promoter,” Figueroa said. “Square Ring is doing its job and I’m doing mine by focusing to fight my best. To be fighting on the Jones-Calzaghe card will catapult me to a different level….the big-time! I want to thank Team Rees for allow me to fight Gavin. It’s a great opportunity for me as well as Gavin. Beating a former world champion would show my great heart and chin and for him a win would be good coming off of his first loss. Millions of fans will be watching me take a step toward a world title.”

Figueroa, a Puerto-Rican-American born in Spanish Harlem, not too long ago was counseling rebellious teens in New York City. He was a 2-time New York City high school wrestler, 14-0 as a senior, who didn’t start boxing until eight years ago after taking advice from a friend.

Now 30 and in his sixth year fighting as a pro, “El Gato” is one of the top rated light welterweights in the world: WBC #4, IBF #5 and WBA #15. His last fight on May 5 was a win by 12-round decision against Luis Rodriquez (22-1), extending Frankie’s win streak to 11, dating back to March of 2005.

Welch-born Rees, who has never fought outside of the United Kingdom as a pro, captured the WBA title in 2007, winning a 12-round decision from Souleymane M’baye (35-1-1). This past March, though, Rees suffered his first loss when Andriy Kotelnik (28-2-1) stopped him in the 12th round for the WBA crown.

“A good win against Rees should position me for a title shot against Kotelnik, or a fight against any of the other top 140-pounders win the world, in 2009,” the U.S. Army veteran Figueroa commented. “I see a lot of myself in Rees, but I’m a little quicker, a lot stronger, and a better thinker. I haven’t fought too often at home in New York City lately and this fight is going to be colossal. It’s going to be crazy like the last time I fight in Madison Square Garden (November 11, 2006), when I beat Joey Rios (14-0) on the Klitschko-Brock card for the New York State title (WDEC10). Rios was ‘King Kong’ in the Bronx at that time but people in New York City knew what I could do.

“I’m training in Las Vegas because my trainer, Buddy McGirt, is there working with Paulie Malignaggi (for his Nov. 22 fight against Ricky Hatton). I go where my trainer is. I love it. I’m training at Bones Adams’ gym and there’s a lot of good sparring there.”

Figueroa is nicknamed “El Gato” – The Cat – because he was the only one quick enough to catch a cat that was a mascot at his original gym in the Bronx. This cat is now a fan-friendly, southpaw slugger who is coming out of the bag on Nov. 8 at home in the Big Apple.

“At this stage of my career,” Frankie concluded, “Rees is my biggest fight and I’m getting a great opportunity to knock down the doors for a world title fight. I’ve had good fights in the past but nothing came out of it. Things are going to be different after this fight.”

For more information about Frankie Figueroa visit his web site at www.teamgato.com, where you can enter a sweepstakes to win what he’s wearing in the ring Nov. 8 as well as a cash prize by simply filling out the mailing list form on the home page.

Salita on Calzaghe-Jones card; By Bob Caico

Salita on Calzaghe-Jones card!
By Bob Caico

Undefeated jr. welterweight Dmitriy Salita (28-0-1) signed a promotional agreement with Square Ring today with hopes of securing a world title shot in the near future. Salita who is currently rated WBA #2 will be fighting a feature bout on the Roy Jones-Joe Calzaghe HBO-PPV broadcast on the card in New York on September 20th against a yet to be determined foe. "I am very excited to be on the card fighting in the Garden with two legends," said Dmitriy. "I haven't fought in the Garden since I won the Golden Gloves in 2001." Square Ring, Inc. has already made overtures to WBA champion Andreas Kotelnik for a title shot but were unable to come to an agreement. Salita is looking for big things with this new partnership, "I have to stay busy and get ready for any title fight in my next fight or two. I signed with Square Ring, Inc. so I can get a shot on HBO and I feel I will dominate boxing this year." CEO of Square Ring, Inc. John Wirt is optimistic about this signing. "We are very excited about this signing. We believe Dmitriy has everything to be a great fighter."

Message from Team Edgar Santana...‏

Due to recent rumblings regarding MSG being a potential venue for a September 20th Roy Jones - Joe Calzaghe showdown and Dmitry Salita joining Jones’ Square Ring promotional company, Team Santana has instructed promoter Lou DiBella to reach out to Square Ring and make a Santana – Salita fight.

Santana – Salita is a fight people want to see and would no doubt be a commercial success. We sincerely hope that Jones - Calzaghe comes to NYC. Roy Jones is an active legend and it would be an honor for Edgar Santana to be on a Roy Jones undercard. We can make MSG buzz with further excitement by taking on Salita. We are eagerly waiting to see if Lou Dibella can strike the deal. Once the fight is made the NY Puerto Rican community will come out in mass to buy tickets.

Edgar Santana is ready, willing and able !!

BJ FLORES SPEAKS ON THE STATE OF THE CRUISERWEIGHTS‏

PHOENIX, AZ- After an exciting weekend in Las Vegas taking in the Bernard Hopkins/Joe Calzaghe Light Heavyweight Title bout, undefeated and world ranked cruiserweight BJ Flores spoke about this past weekend’s IBF Title Elimination bout between Tomasz Adamek and O’Neil Bell which took place in Katowice, Poland.

“The ending was very surprising to me, I was shocked that Bell seemingly quit after the seventh round in such an important fight. He’s shown such terrific fortitude in previous world title bouts against Sebastiaan Rothmann and Jean Marc Mormeck that it’s strange he would stop fighting.

On the part of Adamek this was a terrific win. It’s very impressive that he could come up almost 25 pounds from light heavy to cruiserweight and be successful on a world class scale. He looked fast at the higher weight and fought very intelligently against Bell."

About the upcoming fight between Adamek and IBF title holder Steve Cunningham, Flores stated, “It should be an outstanding fight. Both have fast hands and are very smart fighters, particularly their use of combinations. They’re both always in great shape. Hopefully even if the fight is in Poland, it will be broadcast in the US as fight fans will see a terrific bout.”

In regards to his immediate plans, Flores said, “I’m excited to get back in the ring and we should have an announcement in the very near future.”

BJ Flores, 21-0-1 with thirteen knockouts, is currently world ranked #2 by the IBF, #7 by the WBO and #9 by the WBA.

JOE CALZAGHE WINS DECISION OVER BERNARD HOPKINS

BERNARD HOPKINS VS. JOE CALZAGHE

HBO Sports presented Bernard Hopkins vs. Joe Calzaghe a light heavyweight fight live SATURDAY, APRIL 19(9:45 PM ET/6:45 PM PT) from The Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas.

Six years after unsuccessfully seeking a matchup with Hopkins, Joe Calzaghe now (45-0, 32 KOs), from Newbridge, Wales, finally gets his wish. Known as "The Pride of Wales," the 35-year-old will be fighting at light heavyweight for the first time following a record-tying 21 consecutive world title defenses at super middleweight. In his most recent bout on Nov. 4, Calzaghe unified a host of world titles by taking the belts from Mikkel Kessler in front of a raucous home crowd at Millennium Stadium in Cardiff, Wales. The Hopkins fight will be Calzaghe's first in the United States and only his third outside the United Kingdom, as well as his third HBO appearance.

Over the course of his 20-year career, Philadelphia's Bernard Hopkins now (48-5-1, 32 KOs) has established himself as one of the premier fighters of his era and one of the greatest middleweight champions of all time. After building a reputation on stellar performances against premium competition like Felix Trinidad and Oscar De La Hoya, Hopkins cemented his legacy with a stunning victory over reigning champion Antonio Tarver in June 2006 in his first fight at light heavyweight. Following a short retirement, Hopkins returned to the ring last July, scoring a convincing victory over former 154-pound champion Ronald "Winky" Wright in his second light heavyweight bout. This bout marks the 43-year-old Hopkins' 16th appearance on HBO.
