SecondsOut Radio: Ricky Hatton, David Haye, Future of British Boxing

SecondsOut Radio: Ricky Hatton, David Haye, Future of British Boxing

On this week's edition of SecondsOut Radio, host Eddie Goldman focuses
on the top fighters in boxing in the UK today. We compare where the
careers of Joe Calzaghe, Junior Witter, Amir Khan, Ricky Hatton, David
Haye, and Carl Froch were one year ago with where they are today. And
we comment on the thrilling come-from-behind 12th-round TKO victory
Carl Froch scored over Jermain Taylor this past Saturday night, April
25.

Ricky Hatton, of course, will be facing Manny Pacquiao, regarded by
most as the current pound-for-pound king, this coming Saturday night,
May 2, in Las Vegas. This fight will take place at 140 pounds, where
Hatton is presently regarded as the best fighter in the world. We
spoke with a confident Ricky Hatton on a media conference call this
past week to get his take on this fight.

David Haye, the former cruiserweight champion who relinquished his
belts in that division to move up to heavyweight, will get his wish
for a crack at a heavyweight title when he faces the top fighter in
that weight class, Wladimir Klitschko, June 20 in Germany. David Haye
was in New York this past week for a news conference, and we caught up
with him there for some very poignant comments.

SecondsOut Radio: Can Chris Arreola Become Heavyweight Champion of the World?

SecondsOut Radio: Can Chris Arreola Become Heavyweight Champion of the
World?

On this week's edition of SecondsOut Radio, host Eddie Goldman
discusses the fourth-round knockout victory by heavyweight Chris
Arreola (27-0, 24 KOs) over the veteran former title challenger,
Jameel McCline (39-10-3, 23 KOs), Saturday, April 11, in Las Vegas,
Nevada.

We examine Arreola's career, the potential for him to get a title shot
against WBC champion Vitali Klitschko, how he might fare, how he has
strong support from the boxing establishment, but also how he may be
blowing the opportunity of a lifetime by not training properly and
continuing to come into the ring carrying too much weight.

In addition, we critique some of the historical analysis in the HBO
documentary on the Ali-Frazier 3 "Thrilla in Manila" fight.

SecondsOut Radio: Vic Darchinyan, Jorge Arce, Bruce Silverglade

SecondsOut Radio: Vic Darchinyan, Jorge Arce, Bruce Silverglade On this week's edition of SecondsOut Radio, host Eddie Goldman previews two very different boxing shows coming up this week. On Saturday, February 7, the long-awaited showdown between two champion sluggers, the IBF, WBC, and WBA 115-pound champion, Vic Darchinyan (31-1-1, 25 KOs), and the WBA interim super flyweight champion and former WBC 108 and 112-pound and WBO 108-pound champion,Jorge Arce (51-4-1, 39 KOs), takes place at the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif. This fight will be shown in the U.S. on Showtime. We had a chance to speak with both Vic Darchinyan and Jorge Arce on a media conference call about this highly-anticipated fight, which most people expect to be one of the most action-packed of the year. Also this coming week, on Tuesday, February 3, the first in a series of local shows featuring up-and-coming fighters and run by the world-famous Gleason's Gym (http://www.gleasonsgym.net/) will take place at the Masonic Temple in Brooklyn, New York. Most of the fights will be four-rounders, plus a main event featuring two top-level super flyweights, Rafael Concepcion (12-3-1, 8 KOs) against veteran Kermin Guardia (37-8, 21 KOs). This card marks the return to promoting aftera two-decade long absence by Bruce Silverglade, who owns Gleason'sGym. At a news conference this past week at Portobello's Pizzeria and Sicilian Kitchen in New York, we spoke with Bruce Silverglade about his goals as a promoter and with these shows. SecondsOut Radio: Pacquiao-De La Hoya and the Decline of AmericanBoxing, Holiday Hits Review w/ Keisha Morrisey on Tor Hamer and Marcellus Brown

On this week's edition of SecondsOut Radio, host Eddie Goldman begins by discussing how the one-sided beat down administered by Manny Pacquiao on Oscar De La Hoya this past Saturday, December 6, was symptomatic of the continuing decline of American boxing. With this decisive win by the much smaller Pacquiao over De La Hoya, American boxing now has no real superstars. We next discuss a local New York card which resulted in several surprises. Of the 13 fights on Ring Promotions' "Holiday Hits" show held Thursday, December 4, at the Roseland Ballroom in New York, there were four upsets, including in both of the featured bouts. Right after the fights concluded, we spoke with our colleague Keisha Morrisey to discuss this show. We also spoke with three of the victorious fighters: light heavyweight Will Rosinsky (3-0, 3 KOs), heavyweight Tor Hamer (2-0, 2 KOs), and veteran heavyweight Marcellus Brown (26-17-1, 22 KOs), who won his main event bout with Nagy Aguilera (10-1, 6 KOs) by disqualification. SecondsOut Radio: Thomas Hauser Previews De La Hoya-Pacquiao

On this week's edition of SecondsOut Radio, host Eddie Goldman speaks with the award-winning boxing writer and author, Thomas Hauser of SecondsOut.com (http://www.secondsout.com/). We focus on previewing the Oscar De La Hoya-Manny Pacquiao fight, which takes place Saturday, December 6, in Las Vegas, and will be shown in the U.S. on HBO Pay-Per-View. Pacquiao, who has fought at featherweight and super featherweight in recent years, and just moved up to lightweight in June, will be fighting the much larger De La Hoya at welterweight. In a lengthy interview, we discuss how the problems surrounding this fight are symptomatic of the many problems in boxing, and in particular of the way in which HBO has been running their boxing programming. SecondsOut Radio: Joseph Agbeko, Jorge Teron, More on the Decline of American Boxing‏

SecondsOut Radio: Joseph Agbeko, Jorge Teron, More on the Decline of American Boxing On this week's edition of SecondsOut Radio, host Eddie Goldman begins by discussing the unfortunately recurrent theme of the decline of American boxing. This decline was most recently written about by veteran UK sports writer Kevin Mitchell in a piece on the sports blogs of the Guardian of the UK entitled "US boxing is in danger of being consumed by its own bastard children" (http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/blog/2008/nov/23/boxing). We comment on that article, and also discusswhy having top 140-pound fighter Ricky Hatton, victorious this past Saturday night over Paulie Malignaggi, fight the Oscar De La Hoya-Manny Pacquiao winner is also not good for boxing.

Eddie Goldman and Joseph "King Kong' Agbeko

One champion fighter who has been absent from action for over a yearis IBF bantamweight champ Joseph "King Kong" Agbeko (25-1, 22 KOs). Originally from Ghana and now fighting out of the Bronx, New York, Agbeko is now finally supposed to be defending his belt December 11 in Newark, New Jersey, against challenger William Gonzalez (21-2, 19KOs). Before this December 11 fight was announced, we caught up with Joseph "King Kong" Agbeko at a New York news conference to discuss the reasons for his absence from the ring, and his plans to defend his title.

Jorge "The Truth" Teron

Another fighter having difficulty securing a date is lightweight prospect Jorge "The Truth" Teron (22-0-1, 15 KOs). The 23-year-old Teron, also from the Bronx, New York, had been scheduled to face journeyman Aldo Valtierra (24-10, 13 KOs) on November 21, but thatentire card was cancelled. However, Teron will now be facing Valtierraon a card on Thursday, December 4, at Roseland Ballroom in Manhattan,New York, promoted by Bob Duffy's Ring Promotions. Again, before the November 21 show was cancelled, we had a chance at aNew York news conference to speak with Jorge Teron about his plans andhis career. Last but not least, the subject of the serious problems facing boxingwas also discussed this past week on the "Joey Reynolds Show", anational radio broadcast in New York on WOR 710 AM and on 100 otherstations via the WOR Network, and also available online (http://wor710.com/pages/46370.php?contentType=4&contentId=157588). The guestsin this segment were myself, Eddie Goldman, and comedian Jackie "TheJoke Man" Martling, who is also a boxing fan. In a discussion led by Joey Reynolds, also a big supporter of boxing,we focused upon the continuing problems with the treatment of themedia at the Nov. 8 fight between Joe Calzaghe and Roy Jones Jr. at Madison Square Garden, as well as other problems plaguing the sport. SecondsOut Radio: Calzaghe-Jones and the Decline of American Boxing, with Keisha Morrisey

On this week's edition of SecondsOut Radio, host Eddie Goldman discusses how the November 8 card at Madison Square Garden in New York, headlined by the one-sided drubbing by Joe Calzaghe of Roy Jones Jr., was yet another sign of the long decline of American boxing. We also discuss this theme with Keisha Morrisey (http://keishamorrisey.com), who was there covering the fight.

We discuss the fight itself, the future of Roy Jones Jr. after this loss, why fighters need to learn the boxing business, the poor marketing done to get the fans to know who these fighters are, the failure to reach the urban market, and more.
