SecondsOut Radio: Joseph Agbeko, Jorge Teron, More on the Decline of American Boxing On this week's edition of SecondsOut Radio, host Eddie Goldman begins by discussing the unfortunately recurrent theme of the decline of American boxing. This decline was most recently written about by veteran UK sports writer Kevin Mitchell in a piece on the sports blogs of the Guardian of the UK entitled "US boxing is in danger of being consumed by its own bastard children" (http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/blog/2008/nov/23/boxing). We comment on that article, and also discusswhy having top 140-pound fighter Ricky Hatton, victorious this past Saturday night over Paulie Malignaggi, fight the Oscar De La Hoya-Manny Pacquiao winner is also not good for boxing.

One champion fighter who has been absent from action for over a yearis IBF bantamweight champ Joseph "King Kong" Agbeko (25-1, 22 KOs). Originally from Ghana and now fighting out of the Bronx, New York, Agbeko is now finally supposed to be defending his belt December 11 in Newark, New Jersey, against challenger William Gonzalez (21-2, 19KOs). Before this December 11 fight was announced, we caught up with Joseph "King Kong" Agbeko at a New York news conference to discuss the reasons for his absence from the ring, and his plans to defend his title.

Another fighter having difficulty securing a date is lightweight prospect Jorge "The Truth" Teron (22-0-1, 15 KOs). The 23-year-old Teron, also from the Bronx, New York, had been scheduled to face journeyman Aldo Valtierra (24-10, 13 KOs) on November 21, but thatentire card was cancelled. However, Teron will now be facing Valtierraon a card on Thursday, December 4, at Roseland Ballroom in Manhattan,New York, promoted by Bob Duffy's Ring Promotions. Again, before the November 21 show was cancelled, we had a chance at aNew York news conference to speak with Jorge Teron about his plans andhis career. Duddy headlines “The Grande Event” Nov. 21 in NYC; Quillin, Wolak & Teron in action on Cedric Kushner’s show at Roseland Ballroom

NEW YORK-- Cedric Kushner’s Gotham Boxing has reached an agreement with Bob Duffy’s Ring Promotions and Irish Ropes to promote “The Grande Event” – featuring “Ireland’s” John Duddy, Peter “Kid Chocolate” Quillin, Pawel “Raging Bull” Wolak and Jorge Luis “The Truth” Teron – Friday night, November 21 at the famed Roseland Ballroom in Manhattan.


“I’m really excited about having put together this show,” promoter Cedric Kushner said, “which features four main events on the same show. I’ve had a lot of co-operation from the managers and promoters involved with the principals on this show.

“In addition to the four principal bouts, I plan to put some of the most talented young boxers on this show as well. It’s truly going to be a Grande Event.”

The four principal fighters, or the Big Apple’s “Fab Four,” have a combined pro record of 89-1-1 with 62 knockouts. All four principal fighters are scheduled to be in 10-round bouts against opponents to be determined.

Duddy (25-0, 17 KOs), fighting out Queens by way of Derry, Northern Ireland, is on the verge of a world title fight in 2009 as a middleweight of light middleweight. He is rated No. 2 by the World Boxing Association, as well as No. 5 by the World Boxing Council and No. 7 by the International Boxing Federation. The exciting Irishman will fight in the 10-round main event.

Brooklyn middleweight “Kid Chocolate” Quillin (20-0, 15 KOs), now rated No. 26 by the WBC, is coming off of a sweet 10th-round stoppage of veteran Sam Hill last month in New Hampshire.

Poland-native Wolak (22-1, 15 KOs), now living in Brooklyn, is the New York State middleweight and Polish National junior middleweight champion. He bounced right
back from his only career loss, by 10-round decision to Ishe Smith, with a third round TKO of Chad Greenhill two weeks ago.

NABO lightweight champion Teron (22-0-1, 15 KOs), representing the Bronx, also appears to be in line for a world title shot in 2009, based on his lofty ratings in the WBO (#4, WBA (#12) and WBC (#16).

Scheduled to fight in separate four-round bouts are two New Yorkers, light middleweight Lambrose Karaolides (1-0) and pro debuting light welterweight Jonathan Gonzalez.

SHOBOX RETURNS TO NEW YORK WITH TWO UNDEFEATED PROSPECTS

NEW YORK– ShoBox: The New Generation returns to New York City for the first time in four years with New Jersey’s own Pawel “Raging Bull” Wolak (21-0, 14 KOs) as he puts his undefeated record on the line against ShoBox veteran Ishe “Sugar Shay” Smith (19-3, 19 KOs) in a 10-round junior middleweight bout, Friday, Aug. 1, live on SHOWTIME at 11:00 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the West Coast).

The co-feature pits undefeated, Bronx native Jorge “The Truth” Teron (21-0-1, 14 KOs) against the hard-hitting Mexican, Michael Lozada (29-4-1, 22 KOs) in a 10-round lightweight battle.

The fights will be promoted by Gotham Boxing from the Aviator Arena in Brooklyn, New York.

Born in Poland, “Raging Bull” Wolak has an aggressive, in-your-face style. He is coming off a 10-round unanimous decision victory against then once-beaten Troy Browning on May 17, 2008.

Prior to his fight against Browning, Wolak thrilled boxing fans at Madison Square Garden when he registered a stunning and electrifying second-round knockout of Dupre “Total Package” Strickland on March 15, 2008.

Smith on the other hand is looking to keep his championship hopes alive. This fight is a must win as he’s lost two of his last three fights by unanimous decision – albeit to world-class opposition in Sechew Powell and Joel Julio – and a loss here could be detrimental to his career.

Fighting on ShoBox might be Smith’s good luck charm since he has won his previous three fights on the acclaimed SHOWTIME series.

Smith’s impressive victories on ShoBox provided nationwide notoriety. He notched a decisive unanimous decision win against Randall Bailey, handed David Estrada his first defeat, and outpointed veteran Sam Garr.

Smith gained additional mainstream success when he was tapped to be on the reality TV show The Contender in 2004. He would ultimately be matched against Sergio Mora, the tournament’s eventual winner, where he lost by split decision. Mora went on to become a world champion when he upset Vernon Forrest on June 7, 2008 to win the WBC super welterweight belt via majority decision on SHOWTIME.

The Teron-Lozada fight has the potential to be another explosive match-up. Teron is coming off six impressive knockout victories in his last ten fights while the aggressive Lozada is on an extraordinary run having won seven straight fights by way of knockout.

Teron grew up and still lives in the Bronx, only a subway ride away from the Aviator Arena. He will rely on home court advantage in his continuing quest for a lightweight title.

Nick Charles will call the action from ringside with Steve Farhood serving as expert analyst. The executive producer of ShoBox is Gordon Hall with Richard Gaughan producing and Rick Phillips directing. ShoBox recently celebrated seven outstanding years on the air.
