Alexander, 24, skyrocketed to become the World Boxing Council super lightweight champion at age 22. The talented southpaw became a unified world champion last year after defeating then-International Boxing Federation 140-pound champion Juan “Iron Twins” Urango.

Alexander’s career undefeated streak was snapped on Jan. 29 by World Boxing Organization junior welterweight champion Timothy “Desert Storm” Bradley at the Silverdome in Pontiac, Mich. After suffering numerous head butts throughout the contest, referee Frank Garza halted the match in round 10 after consulting with the ringside physician. The judges favored Bradley 96-95, 97-93 and 98-93.

Rather than opting to face a lesser opponent, Alexander has chosen a dangerous puncher in Matthysse, 28, from Chubut, Agrentina. Matthysse has a career knockout percentage over 92 percent with 26 of 28 victories coming by knockout.

In his most notable bout, Matthysse came within a whisker of knocking out five-time world champion Zab “Super” Judah in the 10th round on Nov. 6 at Prudential Center in Newark, N.J. Matthysse tagged Judah with a brutal right hand in the 10th round that sent Judah to the mat. Later in the round, Matthysse landed a sweeping left hook that staggered Judah again. Judah managed to escape the round and finish the fight—winning by the slimmest margin possible. One judge favored Matthysse 114-113, but the remaining two scorers favored Judah by a point, 114-113.

Matthysee and Alexander have a common opponent in former world champion DeMarcus “Chop Chop” Corley. Matthyssee knocked Corley down nine times en route to an eighth-round win by technical knockout on June 21 in Argentina. Alexander won a unanimous decision over Corley in 2008 at New York’s Madison Square Garden.

The winner of this match will become the top contender at the 140-pound weight limit.

Tavoris “Thunder” Cloud vs. Yusaf “Mack Attack” Mack
IBF Light Heavyweight Championship

Tavoris Cloud returns to the Gateway City after successfully defending his IBF light heavyweight crown in a slugfest against former world champion Glen Johnson on Aug. 7 at Scottrade Center. Cloud won a unanimous decision by the identical scores of 116-112.

Cloud possesses an 81-percent knockout ratio, even though his last three fights were won by unanimous decisions. Possessing an aggressive style and a plethora of power in both hands, Cloud is a throwback fighter that likes to overwhelm his opponents with brute force.

His tenacity and vaunted power have caused other world champions to avoid facing him. Yusaf Mack does not have that luxury as he has been named by the IBF as the mandatory challenger to Cloud.

Mack is a 31-year-old veteran from Philadelphia. He remained unbeaten in his first 24 matches, fighting between middleweight and super middleweight. Mack settled in at the 175-pound light heavyweight limit beginning in 2008, and he promptly reeled off five straight victories.

He fought well in a pivotal fight with respected former light heavyweight world champion Glen Johnson in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., on Feb. 5, 2010, before being stopped by technical knockout in the sixth round.

In his last appearance, Mack defeated Otis Griffin on March 4 in Los Angeles. This was an IBF elimination bout, which put Mack in line to next face Cloud. He is also the reigning USBA light heavyweight champion; former NABA and NABF light heavyweight champion; and former USBA super middleweight champion.

Bermane “B-Ware” Stiverne vs. Ray “The Rainman” Austin
WBC Silver Heavyweight Championship

Emerging heavyweight Bermane Stiverne and title-tested veteran Ray Austin will meet in an important WBC elimination bout with ramifications at the top of the sport.

Stiverne has a staggering 86-percent knockout ratio with an equally stunning 14 first-round knockouts. Only two of his fights have gone the distance. Most of his victims have fallen prey to his powerful right hand.

Austin has hovered at the top of the heavyweight division for the last five years, having faced Wladimir Klitschko, Andrew Golota, Sultan Ibragimov, Odlanier Solis and DaVarryl Williamson, among others.

This will clearly be the toughest opponent yet for Stiverne. A win here would set up bigger fights in the future. Austin will be trying to prove that he is still a force in the heavyweight division.

Guillermo “El Felino” Jones vs. Ryan “The Irish Outlaw” Coyne
WBA Cruiserweight Championship

WBA cruiserweight champion Guillermo Jones will receive a test from undefeated hometown fighter Ryan Coyne who holds the WBC USNBC national cruiserweight championship.

Jones began his career at 147 pounds but it took him adding and astonishing 53 pounds and fighting at the 200-pound limit before he won his first world championship, a 10th-round technical knockout over Firat Arslan in 2008. Jones is a gifted athlete and true fighter who has an uncanny ability to find a way to win in almost every circumstance.

The Panamanian lost a disputed split decision in 2005 to future world champion Steve “USS” Cunningham, but he rebounded to defeat former world champions Kelvin “Concrete” Davis and Wayne “Big Truck” Braithwaite.

In his last appearance, Jones scored an 11th-round technical knockout over respected former interim WBA cruiserweight world champion Valery Brudov when the two met on Oct. 2 in Panama City, Panama.

Coyne graduated from St. Charles High School where he was named “St. Charles County Football Player of the Year” in 2001. He played collegiate football at University of Missouri from 2001 to 2002. Injuries shortened his football career, and he returned to St. Charles to pursue a boxing career while earning a bachelor’s degree from Lindenwood University in 2005.

He has made steady progress in his boxing career, maintaining an unblemished record since turning professional in 2006. He won the WBC-USNBC national title last summer at Scottrade Center in St. Louis by knocking out Warren Browning in the ninth round.

Coyne also is known for having fought into the semi-finals during the fourth season of The Contender, televised on Versus, before suffering an accidental headbutt that forced him to leave the competition.

Coyne trains out of the Sweat Pound 4 Pound Gym in Clayton, Mo., under the tutelage of trainer Jose Ponce. The addition of strength and conditioning expert Matt Brown has helped “The Irish Outlaw” to increase his power.

Cornelius “K9” Bundrage vs. Sechew Powell
IBF Junior Middleweight Championship

IBF junior middleweight champion Cornelius “K9” Bundrage has an old score to settle with Sechew Powell. After a stunning fifth-round technical knockout over Cory Spinks in St. Louis on Aug. 7 to win his first world title, the Emanuel Steward-trained Bundrage immediately looked to avenge his first loss as a professional, which came at the hands of Powell in 2005.

Powell is a southpaw who won his first 20 fights before running into Kassim Ouma at New York’s Madison Square Garden in 2006, where he lost by decision. His only other loss came against Deandre Latimore in 2008, a defeat he avenged in his last appearance on March 3, 2010, winning a majority decision over St. Louis’s Latimore in an IBF elimination bout that earned Powell the right to face Bundrage, the newly crowned champion.

Bundrage was also a fast starter, having won his first 21 fights before running into Powell. He later did what Powell was unable to do, winning a unanimous decision over Ouma when he faced the Ugandan in 2008.

Bundrage went on to face future world champion Yuri Foreman in 2009. The bout was ruled no contest after an accidental clash of heads in the third round left Foreman unable to continue. Bundrage immediately went on to take the title from Spinks in his next match.

The 24-year-old, light middleweight, from Chicago recently signed to Don King Productions. Henry is a rising superstar, with a title shot is his very near future. I had the pleasure of hanging out with Omar, and his personality is and character is more impressive than his skills in the ring. To have such a great starting record, he doesn’t carry that arrogance that most fighters usually have at that stage. He was very humble, and very excited about progressing his career. To start his career with Don King Productions, he will have his first DKP fight June 25, at the Family Arena, live on HBO.

This should let you know how big of a prospect Henry really is. Immediately upon signing with Don King, Don made one phone call and placed Omar on the Devon Alexander/Lucas Matthysse fight in St. Charles, MO. Usually, fighters have to wait months before they get their first fight, but Don sees something special in Omar Henry, and wants the World to notice it as well. He is currently training hard at the King Training Camp in Orwell, OH. This camp has been the secret ingredient in the success of Don King’s Fighters. American Legion Resolves Lawsuit with KingVision

The mouth watering prospect of two of the Cruiserweight division’s finest
former World Champions, Steve ‘USS’ Cunningham and Wayne ‘Big Truck’
Braithwaite, facing each other is finally a reality after promoter, Don
King Productions, confirmed that the fight will take place on the under
card of the Joseph Agbeko - Vic Darchinyan IBF Bantamweight title fight at
the Bank Atlantic Center, Sunrise, Florida on July 11th.

After months of on-off speculation former IBF King ‘USS’ Cunningham, and
former WBC Champ, ‘Big Truck’ Braithwaite will battle it out, in an IBF
title eliminator, for the right to face current IBF Champion, Tomasz
‘Goral’ Adamek later this year in his mandatory defense.

Philadelphia’s ‘USS’ Cunningham, who had his prized IBF crown wrestled
from him on the 11th December ‘08 by Adamek after what can arguably be
described as the greatest Cruiserweight fight of all time, spoke briefly
after learning that the on-off contest against ‘Big Truck’ was finally to
go ahead. "I can't say anything bad about Braithwaite, he's a former
champion, he's been in there with a lot of the top guys in the division,
and truthfully, I thought we would have fought way before this, but I'm
ready for July 11th.

"I can't wait to get back in the ring, I've been dying to fight again
since December. The only thing standing between me and the Adamek rematch
right now is Wayne Braithwaite, so he's gotta go. I'm training hard, like
this is the most important fight in my career, cause really, it is. I'm
not gonna feel right until I'm World Champion again, so I've got my
marching orders and I'm gonna handle my business"

So far June has been a good month for ‘USS’ Cunningham, as shortly before
the confirmation that the title eliminator against Guyana’s ‘Big Truck’
was indeed on, the International Boxing Federation, at their 26th Annual
convention in Panama City, voted Steve ‘USS’ Cunningham-Tomasz ‘Goral’
Adamek their “Fight of the Year”, albeit jointly with the much deserving
Orlando Salido-Cristobel Cruz contest.

Steve ‘USS’ Cunningham vs. Wayne ‘Big Truck’ Braithwaite will be held at
the Bank Atlantic Center, Sunrise, Florida on the 11th July 2009.

Unfortunately for boxing fans who can’t make it to the Bank Atlantic
center on the night, this exceptional match-up, which is clearly highly
significant and potentially the most exciting Cruiserweight bout of the
year so far, will be part of the off-TV card.

Adjaho Gets Big Shot Against DeMarco in July 11 Darchinyan-Agbeko Co-Feature on SHOWTIME‏

NEW YORK– It’s hard to tell who this fight means more to. Is it bigger for Antonio DeMarco to impress his growing legion of followers as he climbs up the lightweight rankings ladder? Or will Anges “Baby Face” Adjaho make a name for himself in his SHOWTIME debut and prove he’s a legitimate top-10 contender in the 135-pound weight class?

Fans will find out on Saturday, July 11, when DeMarco (21-1-1, 15 KOs) of Tijuana, Mexico, takes on West African native Adjaho (17-2, 9 KOs) in a battle of top-10 contenders in the co-feature on SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING (9 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the west coast).

The 10-rounder will precede Vic "Raging Bull" Darchinyan’s attempt to become a world champion in a third weight class when he challenges International Boxing Federation (IBF) 118-pound champion Joseph "King Kong" Agbeko from the BankAtlantic Center in Sunrise, Fla.

The 23-year-old DeMarco is on a 10-fight winning streak and is coming off the biggest bout of his young career, a hard-fought ninth-round TKO over “Kid Diamond” Almazbek Raiymkulov (27-2-1, 15 KOs) to capture the North American Boxing Organization (NABO) lightweight title on Feb. 7, 2009, on SHOWTIME.

In the 29-year-old Adjaho, DeMarco will face the No. 4 ranked IBF and No. 6 World Boxing Council (WBC) contender who resides in Geneva, N.Y., but has been training in Miami, Fla. In his last fight on Valentine’s night, Adjaho won a unanimous decision over Fernando Angulo.

DeMarco is currently recognized as the No. 2 contender by the World Boxing Organization (WBO) and No. 4 by the WBC and World Boxing Association (WBA). The son-in-law of former world champion Raul “Jibaro” Perez, DeMarco got the victory when Kid Diamond would not come out for the 10th round because of an injury. It was DeMarco’s fourth victory on SHOWTIME; the others came on ShoBox: The New Generation in 2008.

As tough and big as the Kid Diamond fight was for DeMarco, he knows facing Adjaho is comparable. “This is my biggest fight,” he said. “After this fight we want to go after a world title. We’re already No. 3 in the rankings so we think we should be able to go after guys that are ranked higher.”

DeMarco has not seen much of his newly announced opponent but his manager Jorge Marron has requested tape and knows Adjaho will be tough.

“We like his style,” Marron said. “He’s a physical fighter who will give Tony a real test. But we think we’re going to win this fight. We’re one or two fights away from a major world championship. Tony is a dedicated professional who wanted this fight.”

Adjaho said, “I haven’t seen DeMarco fight before. But I will be ready when we fight. I just want to do the right thing and make sure than I am ready for this fight. This means everything to me. I need to win this fight so I can continue taking care of my family. I also need to win if I want to become a world champion. This year is going to be great for me and I can’t wait.”

The event is being co-promoted by Don King Productions and Gary Shaw Productions, LLC.

Agbeko (26-1,22 KOs), of New York by way of Ghana, will be making the second defense of the 118-pound crown he won with a seventh-round TKO over Luis Perez in August 2007. A winner of five in a row, Agbeko is coming off a 12-round decision over William Gonzalez on Dec, 11, 2008.

Darchinyan (32-1, 26 KOs) solidified his status as the No. 1 super flyweight in the world – and one of the top boxers pound-for-pound – with back-to-back impressive victories over Jorge Arce last Feb. 7 on SHOWTIME and Christian Mijares on Nov. 1, 2008, on SHOWTIME.

SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING announcers Gus Johnson and Al Bernstein will call the action with Jim Gray reporting from ringside. The executive producer of SHOWTIME Sports is David Dinkins Jr., with Bob Dunphy directing.

Jesus Rodriguez vs. Devon Alexander in St. Louis

ST. LOUIS—Jesus “Chuy” Rodriguez, a winner in 11 of his last 12 matches, signed a contract today to face undefeated World Boxing Council No. 1-ranked super lightweight Devon Alexander “The Great” on Friday, April 24 at Scottrade Center in St. Louis and on SHOWTIME®.

Alexander (17-0, 10 KOs) is the Gateway City’s fastest-rising star, and Rodriguez (19-3, 5 KOs), from Salinas, Calif., will look to give him a stiff test in a match scheduled for 10 rounds.

The main event will feature two more St. Louisans battling for the vacant International Boxing Federation junior middleweight championship when former four-time world champion Cory “The Next Generation” Spinks (36-5, 11 KOs) meets IBF No. 6-ranked contender Deandre “The Bull” Latimore (19-1, 16 KOs).

Both fights will be televised on ShoBox: The New Generation live on SHOWTIME beginning at 11 p.m. ET/PT (10 p.m. CT, delayed on the West Coast). A full undercard will be presented. Doors open at 6 p.m.

The event is promoted by Don King Productions with Spinks vs. Latimore presented in association with Rumble Time Promotions and DiBella Entertainment.

Alexander, a 22-year-old phenom trained and managed by Kevin Cunningham, was recently named mandatory challenger to the WBC 140-pound champion Timothy “Desert Storm” Bradley, so he has his first world championship match riding on this fight.

Bradley added the World Boxing Organization 140-pound title to his resume by defeating then-champion Kendall Holt on April 4, also on SHOWTIME, which means Alexander will next face a unified world champion if he can get past Rodriguez.

“A world championship fight is what I have been working towards my whole life,” Alexander said. “To earn that chance in front of my hometown fans in St. Louis would mean a lot to me.”

Alexander’s promoter Don King sees a bright future for this budding star.

“Devon Alexander has all the skills to become a world champion and he’s going to earn his first title shot by defeating Jesus Rodriguez in St. Louis on April 24,” King said. “Not only is Devon a great fighter but he’s an outstanding individual, a young man the people of St. Louis can be proud of.”

Rodriguez’s three losses have all come against undefeated fighters. He lost his debut against a fighter also making his first appearance in 1999 and against two fighters who remain undefeated: Vladimir Zykov, who had 15 wins when he faced Rodriguez in 2006, and Mike Alvarado, who had 19 wins when Rodriguez dropped a 10-round decision when they met on Feb. 15, 2008.

It should be noted that Rodriguez defeated Omri Lowther, a highly decorated amateur who was undefeated in nine fights as a professional when they met in 2007. Rodriguez won an eight-round unanimous decision.

The co-feature showcases the Gateway City’s fastest-rising star, undefeated World Boxing Council No. 1-ranked super lightweight Devon Alexander “The Great” (17-0, 10 KOs) meeting an opponent to be announced.

Both fights will be televised on ShoBox: The New Generation live on SHOWTIME beginning at 11 p.m. ET/PT (10 p.m. CT, delayed on the West Coast). A full undercard will be presented. Doors open at 6 p.m.

“I love St. Louis and I’m happy to have the top three prizefighters from this great American city on the same card at Scottrade Center,” King said. “Spring is almost here so it’s the perfect time to meet me in St. Louis on April 24 to see the best of the old and best of the new. It's going to be what we call a Lou thing.”


The event is promoted by Don King Productions with Spinks vs. Latimore presented in association with Rumble Time Promotions and DiBella Entertainment.


Spinks, 31, is a former undisputed welterweight champion who also held the IBF junior middleweight championship, a crown he won in St. Louis on July 8, 2006, by winning a majority decision over then-champion Roman “Made in Hell” Karmazin.

Spinks lost that title at Scottrade Center on March 27, 2008, dropping a split decision to Verno Phillips after making the decision to split with his longtime trainer and manager Kevin Cunningham. Spinks and Cunningham have since reconciled and are working together again, and Phillips has vacated the title to move up to the middleweight division. Spinks thinks he will regain the title because his vast world championship experience will be too much for his 23-year-old cross-town rival.

“Deandre faced my stablemate Devon Alexander in the amateurs when they were both coming up,” Spinks said. “My question to Deandre is who have you faced? The first time he met a guy with a winning record, Ian Gardner knocked him out in three. He stopped Sechew Powell in his last fight but he’s not ready for me yet.”

Latimore, 23, met Powell in the biggest fight of his young career during his most-recent appearance on June 11 at the Hard Rock Times Square in New York. Powell had earned the IBF’s No. 1 ranking in the junior middleweight division and was mandatory challenger to face the newly crowned champion Phillips but decided to face Latimore first.

The match was competitive until the seventh round when Latimore broke through, hurting Powell with a right hook. Latimore rocked Powell again with an uppercut before pinning him in a corner. Powell’s lack of an appropriate response led the referee to halt the contest in a major upset victory for Latimore.

Latimore co-promoter Lou DiBella, president of DiBella Entertainment, is looking forward to the event.

“It is an honor to work on this show with Don King, as well as co-promote boxing’s next great young champion, Deandre Latimore, with our partner Rumble Time Promotions,” DiBella said. “The Battle of St. Lou will guarantee high drama.”

Alexander, a 22-year-old phenom who is also trained by Cunningham, was recently named mandatory challenger to the WBC 140-pound champion, so he has his first world championship match riding on this fight.

“A world championship fight is what I have been working towards my whole life,” Alexander said. “To earn that chance in front of my hometown fans in St. Louis would mean a lot to me.”

Spinks won his first world title by defeating Michele Piccirillo in 2003 to become the IBF welterweight champion. He added the World Boxing Council and World Boxing Association 147-pound titles by defeating Ricardo “El Matador” Mayorga later that year.

After successfully defending his crowns with a unanimous decision win over Zab “Super” Judah in a seesaw affair in 2004 that saw both fighters hitting the canvas, Spinks agreed to a rematch with Judah in front of a record crowd of 22,370 in his hometown on Feb. 5, 2005. Judah scored a technical knockout in round nine to spoil Spinks’s homecoming.

After moving up to 154 pounds and becoming world champion again, Spinks took a one-time gamble at 160 pounds to challenge then-World Boxing Council and -World Boxing Organization middleweight champion Jermain “Bad Intentions” Taylor at the FedEx Forum in Memphis on May 19, 2007.

Taylor experienced tremendous difficulty exerting his will over Spinks, who proved he could compete at the higher weight by darting in and out of range while landing during exchanges. Ringside experts and judges had difficulty agreeing on a winner after the fight went the distance. In a rarity, one judge favored Spinks by the wide margin of 117-111, while another judge favored Taylor by the same score. The third judge favored Taylor 115-113 to break the deadlock.

White Wolf on the Hunt in 2009!Sergei Liakhovich injury and promoter free and looking to get back in the heavyweight championship mix

With his promotional ties to Don King Productions severed and his shoulder injury now fully healed, former WBO Champion Sergei "White Wolf" Liakhovich says he is ready to return to heavyweight glory in 2009.

"I want to make a statement in the heavyweight division this year and have some great fights. I'm a free man and I'm 100% healthy. I did my shoulder rehab with one of the best in the States and now everything is great," asserts the eager Belarusian slugger.

The return to top form comes as welcome news, as Liakhovich hadn't had much luck on his side since winning the WBO title against Lamon Brewster in impressive fashion in 2006. First he suffered a highly debatable stoppage to Shannon Briggs at 2:59 of the 12th and final round to lose his title. And then, in a WBA Title Eliminator in February of last year, he suffered a rotator cuff injury against Nikolay Valuev and was shut out over 12 uneventful rounds.

Manager Ivaylo Gotzev maintains that several lucrative opportunities were lost due to the boxing business world claiming to be reluctant to deal with Don King. "There is no Don King excuse anymore for not fighting. Whoever avoids Sergei cannot use that excuse anymore. Being a free agent is definitely going to open doors."

Gotzev points out, correctly, that Liakhovich is still a relatively young heavyweight with plenty of good performances left in him. "Sergei is 32 years old in a division without many young fighters. There is plenty of time left for Sergei to prove his greatness. He is very excited to be back to complete health. The best of Sergei will be on display in 2009."

Some of the names Liakhovich says he'd love to face are British bomber David Haye, either Klitschko brother or especially up-and-coming Chris Arreola. "I've been in touch with Dan Goossen, telling him Sergei is available," asserts Gotzev. "Nobody can stop us. Anyone who wants a piece of the White Wolf is welcome."

"I would love to fight any of these guys," adds Liakhovich. "I want the best in the world, no matter who it is. I want tough opponents to make great fights. Every promoter, manager and fighter in boxing should want to do the same. Putting on great fights is the only way for boxing to make a comeback. Tell any of them to call me and I'm there."

Unified Lightweight World Champion Nate Campbell Responds to IBF Mandatory Challenger Ali Funeka

SUNRISE, Fla.—Unified lightweight world champion Nate “Galaxxy Warrior” Campbell (32-5-1, 25 KOs) gave a stern warning to International Boxing Federation No. 1-Ranked lightweight mandatory challenger Ali “Rush Hour” Funeka (30-1, 25 KOs) at a Don King-hosted press conference at BankAtlantic Center today promoting their Valentine’s Day meeting in South Florida.

“I’m a New Age guy that likes to be on the Internet,” Campbell began. “Then I went on the Web and read what Ali Funeka said he’s going to do to me on Valentine’s Day. He said he sees nothing special in me. He said he knows me like the back of his hand. That’s rhetoric but he’s going to pay for it. I’m going to beat him like he tried to steal something from me.”

Campbell said there was no previous ill will between him and his South African opponent.

“This was a basic training camp for me until I heard his mouth. Now it’s personal. He’s got to pay the retail American price for his words, not the South African price. I’m going to hit this 6-foot-1-inch Funeka everywhere it’s legal and maybe where it ain’t if the referee turns his back. If he truly wants to win, he better be ready to fight, kill or die.”

Campbell’s comments caught the attention of the assembled media and his promoter, Don King.

“He’s not fooling around,” King said of Campbell’s comments. “Don’t forget what this man did to Juan Diaz, and he did that partly on my behalf. I hope Funeka knows what he’s getting into.”

King announced tickets to the fight, priced at $200, $75, $40 and $25 (with all seats buy one, get one free excepting a limited number of golden circle seats) will go on sale at 10 a.m. on Friday and can be purchased at all Ticketmaster outlets, charge by phone at (800) 745-3000, by visiting www.ticketmaster.com or at the BankAtlantic Center box office.

Dubbed “St. Valentine’s Day Massacre” by King, the card will also feature colorful former three-time world champion Ricardo “El Matador” Mayorga (28-7-1, 22 KOs) tangling with undefeated Alfredo “Perro” Angulo (14-0, 11 KOs) to determine the WBC’s No. 1 ranking and mandatory challenger at the 154-pound limit as well as another important match at 154 pounds with interim WBC super welterweight champion Sergio “Maravilla” Martinez (44-1-1, 24 KOs) taking on former IBF welterweight champion Kermit “The Killer” Cintron (30-2, 27 KOs).

IBF Cruiserweight Champion Steve “USS” Cunningham, from Philadelphia, Will Take on Jersey City, N.J. Polish Superstar and Former World Champion Tomasz Adamek in Main Event Co-Promoted by Main Events and Don King Productions

NEWARK, N.J.—International Boxing Federation cruiserweight champion Steve “USS” Cunningham (21-1, 11 KOs) will meet Polish-born former world champion Tomasz Adamek (35-1, 24 KOs) at the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J. on Thursday, Dec. 11.

Tickets priced at $303, $153, $78, $53, $38 go on sale on Monday at 11 a.m. and can be purchased by calling TicketMaster at 201-507-8900.

The event, with full undercard, is being co-promoted by Main Events and Don King Productions.

A classic boxer-puncher, Cunningham will be making the second defense of his IBF 200-pound limit crown, which he won by defeating Krzystztof Wlodarczyk in Poland on May 26, 2007. Six months earlier, Cunningham suffered the sole loss of his career in a controversial split decision won by Wlodarczyk when the two squared off for the vacant IBF championship.

Cunningham also scored notable wins against former IBF cruiserweight champion Kelvin “Koncrete” Davis and Panamanian strongman Guillermo Jones, who recently took the World Boxing Association cruiserweight championship from Firat Arslan on Sept. 27.

Adamek burst upon the boxing scene in his first fight in America against Australian Paul “Hurricane” Briggs for the vacant World Boxing Council light heavyweight championship at the United Center in Chicago on May 21, 2005. Their 12-round slugfest, which Adamek won by majority decision, was one of the better fights of that year.

The inevitable rematch came the following year and rivaled the first match in its brutal intensity. Again, Adamek won by majority decision.

Adamek’s lone loss came against undefeated “Bad” Chad Dawson in Kissimmee, Fla., on Feb. 3, 2007. The slick Dawson built a scorecard lead that Adamek came close to erasing when he landed his vaunted right-hand power shot and sent Dawson to the canvas in the 10th round. Dawson literally held on to Adamek to narrowly escape the round and survived to win the match by decision.

Adamek catapulted himself into position to face Cunningham by scoring an eighth round technical knockout on April 19 over O’Neil “Supernova” Bell, who in 2006 became the first undisputed cruiserweight world champion since Evander “The Real Deal” Holyfield held that distinction in 1988.

Don King Joins Nike To Promote Potential World Tennis Classic Showdown ‘The Grapple in the Apple’

NEW YORK CITY— Nike has invited the promoter of the people, Don King, to join them in creating a significant campaign to bring all the people to bear witness to the two greatest tennis players in the world—No. 1-ranked Rafael Nadal and No. 2-ranked Roger Federer—and for them to reach even greater fame and acclaim at New York’s annual U.S. Open Tennis Championships

They have dubbed the players’ potential Open showdown “The Grapple in the Apple” and believe they can help expose Nadal and Federer to all of the people, from the masses to the classes.

“This rivalry is unrivaled in mankind, history in the making,” King said. It is an irresistible force against and immovable object, and something has got to give—and give it will at the U.S. Open Tennis Championships in New York. I guarantee you it will be a September to remember.”

The 2008 U.S. Open—one of four Grand Slam events in tennis each year—begins today and runs through Sept. 7 in Flushing, N.Y., and Nike felt the indefatigable boxing promoter (who turned 77 last week) would be the perfect person to join them to help bring the players’ exquisite brand of athleticism to the largest audience possible.

King will serve as a creative partner and a voice for the promotion. Nike is working with longtime creative agency Wieden & Kennedy and Don King Productions.

“We worked with Wieden to develop the Don King idea,” Nike Vice President of U.S. Brand Management Ken Dice said. “When we brought Don in, we restructured our original idea around some of his insights.

“How often do we bring in a third creative partner to the table with a veteran marketing agency and shake things up by saying, ‘Hey, we have this idea and we think you can help us.’ And Nike has always been about collaboration with its athletes, so we brought in a promotional expert to help promote the U.S. Open and this rivalry in a way that maybe we haven’t done in a very long time.”

Newspaper advertisements, taxi toppers, mobile billboards and two “First Amendment Ad Vans”—one for Federer and one for Nadal—launched the campaign in New York City as did a Thursday press conference hosted by King, where he regaled the tennis stars and assembled media with his soaring oratory.

Nadal and Federer sat on a dais separated by King, enjoying their first experience of listening to the legendary promoter describe them to the audience. They seemed to genuinely appreciate King’s enthusiastic pronouncements about their tennis prowess—not to mention snappy one-liners and rhymes that left both the players and the assembled New York media howling in laughter.

“I know Rafa and Roger ain’t no kin, so they can bend,” King quipped. “Don’t let the smiles and embraces fool you. These two want nothing more than to walk off with the 2008 U.S. Open championship, and there will only be one man that does that. Will it be Rafa, or will it be Roger?”

Federer and Nadal have created a tremendous rivalry on the court over the last five years—while remaining good friends off the court—and their recent, epic four-hour, five-set finals meeting at Wimbledon was so tremendous that many have proclaimed it the best tennis match ever played.

The two tennis greats have made it to the final match in the two most recent Grand Slam events, and if they make it to the finals at this year’s U.S. Open, the hope is to bring on added attention to them and their hoped-for showdown at Arthur Ashe Stadium main court on Sept. 7 that millions more would be watching on television around the world.

Nike, like King, has long been known for their vision, creative thinking, innovative and imaginative marketing approach. With Nike’s collaborative efforts in the design of its products—and King’s pioneering trailblazer initiative—it made for a natural marketing combination. ANDRE BERTO TO HEADLINE HBO BOXING AFTER DARK "BLACK AND BLUES" JUNE 21 IN MEMPHIS‏

NEW YORK- DiBella Entertainment in association with Prize Fight Promotions will present a night of boxing action LIVE at FedExForum in downtown Memphis, Tennessee on Saturday June 21. “Memphis is a great place to do an event, and I do need my fix of barbecue and blues,” says DiBella Entertainment head Lou DiBella.

Headlining the card will be undefeated NABF Welterweight Champion Andre Berto (21-0, 18 KO’s) as he goes up against talented Mexican veteran Miguel “Mikki” Rodriguez (29-2, 23 KO’s), a matchup of two of the biggest punchers in the division.

In Berto’s last fight on February 9 in Temecula, CA, he steamrolled through Michel Trabant (43-3-1, 19 KO’s), forcing the referee to stop the fight in the 6th round. Rodriguez last fought on September 29, 2007 in Sacramento where he scored a ten-round unanimous decision victory over Jerome Ellis. Berto and Rodriguez are ranked numbers one and two respectively at welterweight by the World Boxing Council. This fight will be Berto’s third professional appearance in front of Memphis fight fans at FedExForum.

The co-feature that evening will showcase America’s two best young, undefeated heavyweights as DBE’s “The Gentleman” Chazz Witherspoon (23-0, 15 KO’s) steps into the ring against Chris “The Nightmare” Arreola (23-0, 21 KO’s). This matchup provides something that is desperately needed in today’s heavyweight division…a top American challenger in the heavyweight division. "This is just what the heavyweight division needs, two bright, young, undefeated hungry fighters looking to establish the future of the division in one fell swoop," said Goosen Tutor head Dan Goosen.

Undefeated NABO Flyweight Champion Rayonta Whitfield (21-0, 10 KO’s) will also be part of the loaded undercard in Memphis. The Augusta, Georgia native is ranked number one in the world by the World Boxing Organization. “We’re excited that DBE is now apart of Team Whitfield who we feel is the best flyweight in the world today. Lou and his staff will create some new and exciting opportunities for all of us,” said Prize Fight head Brian Young.
