ISAAC CHILEMBA SIGNS PROMOTIONAL CONTRACT WITH MAIN EVENTS

ISAAC CHILEMBA (r) photo by Keisha Morrisey
Main Events announced today that they have signed an exclusive promotional contract with South African light heavyweight Isaac Chilemba, 20-2-2, 9 KOs. The 26 year old Chilemba was born in Malawi and has fought the majority of his bouts in South Africa.
Nicknamed "Golden Boy", Chilemba turned professional in 2005, and won several African titles during his eight years in the ring as a 168 and 175 pounder. Chilemba's collection of championships include the African Boxing Union super middleweight title, the WBO Africa light heavyweight title, African Boxing Union light heavyweight title, WBC International light heavyweight title, the IBO super middleweight title, and the WBC International light heavyweight title.
Chilemba holds victories over perennial contender Edison Miranda (W10), then-undefeated Maxim Vlassov (W10), and dangerous trial horse Rayco Saunders (W8), all in the United States. In his last two bouts, Chilemba went 24 rounds in the UK with Liverpool Bomber Tony Bellew (D12, L12), in bouts for the WBC Silver light heavyweight title.
With his excellent international experience and solid record, Chilemba is likely to quickly break into the talented top-tier of the current light heavyweight scene.
Chilemba said, "I am pleased to be with Main Events and I look forward to getting back in the ring. Everything happens for a reason."
"Isaac gave Maxim Vlasov, Thomas Oosthuizen and Doudou Ngumbu their first loss. All three are world rated fighters today. Also, arguably, he should hold one win over Tony Bellew, as they fought to a draw in Liverpool earlier this year . Isaac's most impressive fights occurred during times when he was very active. We believe that the combination of activity and the exposure he will receive fighting on the NBC Sports Network will create the right environment to bring out his full potential," said promoter Kathy Duva. "We are excited to work with Isaac, his manager, our long time friend, Damian Ramirez, and his co-manager, Jodi Soloman."
Chilemba is expected to make his first start under the Main Events banner before the end of the year.

CURTIS STEVENS READY TO DO WHAT HE DOES BEST - Curtis "Showtime" Stevens vs. Derrick Findley - Sat. April 20th - The Theater at Madison Square Garden

Rising middleweight power puncher Curtis "Showtime" Stevens, 23-3, 17 KOs, is raring to go for his next outing, an 8-rounder against Derrick Findley, 20-9, 13 KOs, scheduled for Saturday afternoon, April 20th, at The Theater at Madison Square Garden. The fight will be part of a nationally televised NBC afternoon broadcast topped by the Tyson Fury vs. Steve Cunningham heavyweight elimination bout. The broadcast, which is part of the NBC Fight Night series, will begin at 4PM ET.

Stevens has been fighting as a pro since 2004, but it is his last two bouts that have started attracting serious attention. In January, he disposed of the usually durable Elvin Ayala in less than one round to win the vacant NABF middleweight title. That highlight-reel KO was his second straight first-round stoppage, and the Brooklyn native is looking to add another knockout to his collection.
"I don't get paid for overtime," Stevens said about his upcoming fight. "I go rounds in the gym, not in the ring."
Certainly Stevens has been on a real tear after a layoff stalled his promising career. But now that he's fighting regularly and has trimmed down to the middleweight division, the New Yorker looks like he could be a real player among the top fighters in the world.
In Findley, Stevens will be up against a sturdy opponent who's never been knocked out and who is always looking for a fight.
"He looks to knock you out, and that's what I do too," Findley said. "I'm pretty sureI won't have to look for him, and he damn sure won't have to look for me."
If this is true, the fight figures to be explosive.
"He's never been knocked out, but he's never been hit by a guy like me before," Stevens said.
With everyone watching, both live at the Garden and at home on TV, another strong showing by Stevens may start to open some important doors for him.
"This is a great opportunity to go out there and showcase my skills," Stevens said. "In December (NBC's last Saturday afternoon boxing event) four million people were watching, that's incredible. I'm excited to be here in my hometown, at the Mecca (Madison Square Garden), and fighting on NBC. On April 20th, I'll just do what I do best."

APRIL 20TH FIGHT INFO

April 20th at The Theater at Madison Square Garden in New York features a 12-round heavyweight battle between Tyson Fury and Steve Cunningham in the main event. Curtis Stevens will take on Derrick Findley in the 8-round middleweight co-feature. Six additional bouts are planned for the undercard. Doors open at The Theater at Madison Square Garden doors open at 1:15PM ET. The main event and co-feature will be broadcast 4PM ET on NBC as a special 2 hour afternoon presentation of NBC  Fight Night. The card is presented by Hennessy Sports and Main Events.

The main event is an official IBF Heavyweight Voluntary Eliminator fight for the #2 position. The winner must meet #1 or the leading available contender to establish the mandatory challenger for Heavyweight King Wladimir Klitschko.

DYNAMITE DARGAN READY FOR TEST AGAINST GATEKEEPER RAMESIS GIL February 23rd - The Paramount, Huntington, NY

Undefeated Philly lightweight, Karl "Dynamite" Dargan, 11-0, 6 KOs, is set to jump-start his boxing career when he takes on gatekeeper Ramesis Gil, 8-5-5, 5 KOs, in a 6-round bout at The Paramount, in Huntington, NY, on Saturday, February 23rd.  The bout is on the undercard of a big NBC Sports Network Fight Night card that features undefeated heavyweights Czar Glazkov and Malik Scott in its nationally televised 10-round main event.

All eyes have been on Dynamite since his successful amateur days when he was one of the top American boxers on the international scene.  He filled his trophy case with numerous medals and awards throughout those years, and ever since he turned professional in 2007, hopes have remained high for him to ascend to a professional world championship.

Dynamite fought once last year, but since signing with Main Events he is determined to remain active in 2013 and gain significant ground in the world ratings.  First up is Ramesis Gil.

Dominican-born Gil went unbeaten in his first ten pro bouts before becoming the go-to-guy for testing undefeated prospects.  Gil's last eight starts have been against undefeated risers like Jerry Belmontes, Jorge Maysonet Jr. and Darley Perez.  These tough assignments put a few marks on Gil's record, but they also made him an effective gauge of lightweight talent.  He fell to some of them, but managed to defeat Luis Joel Gonzalez, 9-0-1, and Carney Bowman, 16-0, and drew with an 8-0 Jamie Kavanagh.  This makes Gil a live opponent for Dargan, and capable of pulling the upset at any time.

Dargan said, "Fighting on NBC Sports Network is a tremendous opportunity for me. I am ready for Gil. Training camp was great. Now it's time to fight. There's nothing he can throw at me that I won't be ready for."

Dynamite will have to be fully prepared for Gil and on his toes when the bell rings.  If he can pass this test against Gil, then 2013 may just be the year he fights his way into the world rankings and puts his dream of becoming a world champion back on track.

ABOUT FEBRUARY 23 FIGHTS
The February 23rd card is promoted by Main Events, Star Boxing and Goossen Tutor.  The main event featuring Vyacheslav "Czar" Glazkov vs. Malik Scott, and the co-feature, Chris Algieri vs. Jose "Mangu" Peralta, will be shown live on the NBC Sports Network Fight Night telecast which begins at 10:30 pm ET.

Jerry Belmontes vs. Ramesis Gil to be televised by Univision on May 19th

Main Events brings boxing fans a tidal wave of action over the next month with three rapid-fire promotions scheduled for national television audiences. However, merely keeping boxing lovers busy was not the goal of Main Events head Kathy Duva. Committed to making matches that really count, Duva stacked all three shows with appealing fights that really matter in boxing's big picture. Kathy Duva said, "It has been a long time since we had such a busy month. There is a lot of excitement in the air at Main Events, lately, and, as a fan, I can't wait to watch each one of these bouts." So get ready for both quality and quantity over the next month.

First up is a card at the Pharr, Texas Convention Center to be televised by Univision on May 19th. Headlining the show is Texas featherweight, Jerry Belmontes, known as "The Corpus Christi Kid", puts his undefeated, 15-0, 5 KOs, record on the line against Dominican trial horse Ramesis Gil, 7-3-5, 5 KOs. It will be Belmontes' first time in the ring since last June, and he'll be hoping a win over Gil will be his ticket to a successful and more active future. The loyal fan base Belmontes built as an all-star amateur, will no doubt be in the house to cheer him on.

Also on the card, is an important heavyweight bout between Odlanier Solis, 17-1, 12 KOs, and Konstantin Airich, 23-5-2, 17 KOs, for the IBF Intercontinental Title. Cuban-born Solis will try to bounce back from his bizarre 2011 loss to WBC champ Vitali Klitschko, and to do so, will have to will have to get past the German-based Airich, who is currently on a six-bout winning streak, the last three by knockout.

Judah climbing mountain in preparation for fight with Matthysse

Former Undisputed Welterweight and Junior Welterweight Champion Zab Judah has taken his training to a new level in preparation for his Nov. 6th match-up with Argentine Knock Out artist Lucas Matthysse at Newark's Prudential Center.

Known in boxing circles simply as "Super Judah," the 32-year old Brooklyn native has given a whole new meaning to the word "Super" in recent weeks. "I've been running Mt. Charleston every other day since I heard that Matthysse is coming to fight me on HBO in front of my hometown crowd," Judah enthused. "I am so excited about this fight. I have never been in better shape in my life. I could fight this kid right now!"

Formally named Charleston Peak and located 35 miles west of Las Vegas, Mt. Charleston reaches 11,918 feet (3,615 meters) at its highest elevation. An average of 20 to 30 degrees cooler than Las Vegas, the mountain is a popular year round destination for hiking, skiing, picnicking and horse-back riding.

Guided by his father, Yoel Judah and former Light Heavyweight Kingpin Eddie Mustafa Muhammad, Judah has taken advantage of the resort's solitude and challenging runs as he prepares to take on his young South American challenger. According to Zab's partner in Super Judah Promotions, Bill Halkias, "Zab isn't taking any shortcuts. He is taking his training very seriously and never complains. As a matter of fact, I think he really likes pushing himself to new limits. He likes going through the pain because he knows it will pay off in the ring. After 10 to 12 rounds of sparring, followed by his daily gym workout, his breathing is very calm and he is not tired."

Matthysse has followed in the footsteps of his fellow countrymen and savage punchers, Luis Firpo and Carlos Monzon, to become a major star in his native Argentina. His tremendous knock out power has earned him 27 of his 28 wins by KO. Matthysse has only once heard the bell ring to signal the start of the fifth round, as he scored all of his 27 KO's inside of four.

"I have all respect for him because he is coming here on my home turf to fight me," Judah said. "But he is stepping up to the big time now."

Tickets for the 12 round NABO Championship bout, promoted by Main Events, Super Judah and Golden Boy, are on sale now. The winner of the bout also will be designated the #2 contender in the IBF Junior Welterweight ratings.

Giovanni Lorenzo wants his turn

Number One World Middleweight contender Giovanni Lorenzo of New York and the Dominican Republic has waited very patiently for his shot at the world title. The former Dominican Olympian has compiled an impressive 27-1, 19 KO record while quietly toiling under the tutelage of trainer Pastor Ralph Farriett of Yonkers for the past seven years.

“I want to be the world champion,” the soft spoken Lorenzo says. “That is my goal and nothing will stop me.”

Lorenzo should get his chance this Fall. He is currently in line to be the mandatory challenger for Arthur Abraham, the undefeated IBF Middleweight Champion, in his next fight.

“I’m already training and I want my chance at the title,” Lorenzo said from his home in the Dominican Republic. “I am tired of waiting in line. Tell Abraham’s people to get on the phone and start the negotiation.”

Today IBF put those wheels in motion when they sent a letter to Abraham’s promoter, Sauerland Event, advising them that negotiations for a Lorenzo fight should start immediately.

Rumors are swirling that Abraham, who defended his title successfully on Saturday night against former sparring partner Nahir Oral, can no longer make the middleweight limit and will move up in weight class rather than make his mandatory defense against Lorenzo. In that case, the IBF would order Lorenzo, the Number One Contender, to fight Sebastian Sylvester, an Abraham stablemate who earned the Number Two IBF ranking when he soundly defeated Lajuan Simon of Philadelphia Saturday night in Germany.

“I’ll fight either one,” the low key Lorenzo stated. “If Abraham won’t fight me, I’ll knock out Sylvester to win the title instead. I’ll fight either one of them right in Germany if I have to. Now it’s my turn and I’m going to come home with the title. I’m just waiting for them to tell me the date.”

Lorenzo promoter Kathy Duva of Main Events said, “Giovanni has been quietly learning his craft ever since he turned pro. I believe that by staying under the radar and avoiding the hype that sometimes causes young contenders to lose their focus he has been given the opportunity to prepare well for his world title challenge.” She added, “We expect that negotiations with Sauerland Event will move forward this week and we will have something definitive to announce very soon.”

See you at the Fights.
Thanks for your time.

CUNNINGHAM vs. ADAMEK - ON SALE MONDAY IN NEWARK, N.J.‏

IBF Cruiserweight Champion Steve “USS” Cunningham, from Philadelphia, Will Take on Jersey City, N.J. Polish Superstar and Former World Champion Tomasz Adamek in Main Event Co-Promoted by Main Events and Don King Productions

NEWARK, N.J.—International Boxing Federation cruiserweight champion Steve “USS” Cunningham (21-1, 11 KOs) will meet Polish-born former world champion Tomasz Adamek (35-1, 24 KOs) at the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J. on Thursday, Dec. 11.

Tickets priced at $303, $153, $78, $53, $38 go on sale on Monday at 11 a.m. and can be purchased by calling TicketMaster at 201-507-8900.

The event, with full undercard, is being co-promoted by Main Events and Don King Productions.

A classic boxer-puncher, Cunningham will be making the second defense of his IBF 200-pound limit crown, which he won by defeating Krzystztof Wlodarczyk in Poland on May 26, 2007. Six months earlier, Cunningham suffered the sole loss of his career in a controversial split decision won by Wlodarczyk when the two squared off for the vacant IBF championship.

Cunningham also scored notable wins against former IBF cruiserweight champion Kelvin “Koncrete” Davis and Panamanian strongman Guillermo Jones, who recently took the World Boxing Association cruiserweight championship from Firat Arslan on Sept. 27.

Adamek burst upon the boxing scene in his first fight in America against Australian Paul “Hurricane” Briggs for the vacant World Boxing Council light heavyweight championship at the United Center in Chicago on May 21, 2005. Their 12-round slugfest, which Adamek won by majority decision, was one of the better fights of that year.

The inevitable rematch came the following year and rivaled the first match in its brutal intensity. Again, Adamek won by majority decision.

Adamek’s lone loss came against undefeated “Bad” Chad Dawson in Kissimmee, Fla., on Feb. 3, 2007. The slick Dawson built a scorecard lead that Adamek came close to erasing when he landed his vaunted right-hand power shot and sent Dawson to the canvas in the 10th round. Dawson literally held on to Adamek to narrowly escape the round and survived to win the match by decision.

Adamek catapulted himself into position to face Cunningham by scoring an eighth round technical knockout on April 19 over O’Neil “Supernova” Bell, who in 2006 became the first undisputed cruiserweight world champion since Evander “The Real Deal” Holyfield held that distinction in 1988.

GIOVANNI LORENZO - RAUL MARQUEZ, IBF Middleweight Mandatory Eliminator Hard Rock Live in Hollywood, FL SHOWTIME TO BROADCAST LIVE

MIDDLEWEIGHT MELEE: The Hard Rock Live in Hollywood, FL will serve as the site for a Showtime World Championship Boxing middleweight doubleheader. The 12 round non-title main event bout will feature a rematch between Edison Miranda (30-2, 26 KO’s) and undefeated IBF middleweight champion Arthur Abraham (26-0, 21 KO’s). In the co-feature undefeated IBF #4 ranked contender Giovanni Lorenzo (26-0, 18 KO’s) challenges IBF #13 ranked contender and former world champion Raul Marquez (40-3-1, 29 KO’s) in a 12 round IBF Mandatory Eliminator bout. IBF champion Abraham is mandated to fight the winner of Lorenzo-Marquez in his next bout. SHOWTIME’s June 21broadcast will begin at 9pm ET / PT. Tickets, priced at $202, $152, $102, and $52 are now on sale and may be purchased at the Hard Rock Live Box Office or TicketMaster.com

GIOVANNI LORENZO: Lorenzo began camp on January 6 in Yonkers, NY. He says his biggest obstacle in camp has been the “104-degree gym temperatures” in the gym thanks to New York’s recent heat wave. He has sparred approximately 60 rounds for the bout, but will not reveal who his sparring partners are out of superstition. In a recent interview with www.boxingconfidential.com , Lorenzo said his trainer “Pastor Ralph” doesn’t believe in a lot of sparring because fighters develop a “sparring mentality and that has a negative effect”.

Pastor Ralph Farrait is an ordained minister who runs a church in the south Bronx called Corner Stone. He has worked in the past with Saoul Mamby, Aaron Davis, Andrey Tsurkan, and Darling Jimenez. Pastor Ralph says that while watching fighters train at Gleason’s Gym he noticed that many of the fighters who sparred a lot began to mimic the styles of those they were working against in training. Not only would they pick up the bad habits of the other fighters, but they would become predictable as well. Limiting those sparring sessions lessens the likelihood of that happening. Lorenzo agrees and believes that less sparring has made him a more dangerous puncher as is evidenced by his recent knockout ratio.

Somehow I don’t think this is what is meant by the term road work:

A few weeks ago as he and his trainer were returning from his physical conditioning work in Long Island, NY, they became embroiled in a huge traffic jam on the Grand Central Parkway. Traffic stopped moving and Lorenzo, like a race horse at the starting gate, was eager to get home and finish his road work. Frustrated by the bumper-to-bumper congestion, he jumped out of the car and started towards the parkway. Pastor Ralph screamed at him to get back in the car because they were still 6 -7 miles from the Whitestone Bridge. Lorenzo insisted that he would finish his road work alongside the parkway and meet him at the foot of the bridge, before darting in between cars towards the shoulder of the road. Eventually Pastor Ralph arrived at the entrance to the bridge and found Lorenzo sitting on the side of the road, exhausted. Not satisfied with just making it to the bridge Lorenzo forced himself to run it in record time because he was intent on “beating you there Pastor Ralph.”

RAUL MARQUEZ: “After I beat Bronco McKart I took off a week and then went right back to the gym to stay in shape. I’ve been in camp for about eight weeks” . . . Marquez alternates between sprints and long distance running. Some days he’ll run ¼ or ½ mile sprints, other days he’ll run for 45 consecutive minutes. The purpose is to “change it up so we don’t get bored” . . . The former champ spars twice per week. He mainly works the pads and pounds the heavy bag. “The hardest sparring I go in one session would be eight or nine rounds. It’s a tough workout with the heat and humidity here in Houston and fresh sparring partners coming in every couple of rounds.” Marquez works with four different sparring partners. Two are super middleweights, one is a light heavyweight, and the last is a tall, lanky heavyweight. Two of the sparring partners are top-five national amateurs . . . “It’s been a good camp,” says Marquez. “I can’t complain. No injuries. My weight’s good. The McKart fight helped me. Last year I fought twice and stopped both guys early. The 10 rounds of work against McKart helped me with my confidence . . .

Former "The Contenders" series star, Jerson Ravelo and Giovanni Lorenzo

Only weeks after Pavlik selected Gary Lockett as his next opponent rather than risk his crown against Lorenzo, Sauerland Promotions (Abraham’s promoter) has begun discussions with Warriors Boxing about defending the IBF crown against Edison Miranda in June. Not so fast says Lorenzo.

“The IBF has sent a letter to Abraham’s promoter and to my promoter (Main Events) that negotiations must begin immediately for his mandatory defense against me,” said Lorenzo. “I’ve been waiting a long time for this title opportunity and I’m not going to let politics in boxing screw me out of chance. I thank the IBF very much for supporting me.”
