Perry frustrated with Margarito’s untimely Retirement‏

When junior middleweight Abel “Truth Serum” Perry received word that he’d be facing Antonio Margarito May 26, the Colorado City native was confident that a victory over the former three-time welterweight champion would lead to the kind of opportunity he’s dreamed of since day one.
With many ups and downs during his 6 ½ year pro career, Perry, 18-5 (9 KO’s), won five straight bouts and believed that May 26 would be his sixth. This was until Margarito injured his Achilles 12 days before fight night and the bout was postponed until July.
“Everything was rescheduled for July 7 to my knowledge and I actually saw on the internet that the fight was going to take place on the 21st,” said Perry. “To be honest, I assumed he wasn’t training because he looked heavy in recent photos.”
He also viewed the delay as something that would only benefit him leading up to the fight of his life.
“I was actually grateful for the postponement because many of my fights came on short notice or without a proper training camp. For the Margarito bout, my manager Bobby Dobbs sent me to a training camp in Big Bear Lake, CA where I was working with Carson Jones and Gennady Golovkin. I was sparring world class guys and the extra time would only give me a bigger advantage. This was the perfect situation.”
To his unpleasant surprise, Margarito announced his retirement on June 8, canceling the fight altogether while leaving Perry without the career-changing opportunity.
“It left a sour taste in my mouth. I felt wronged because they changed the date multiple times and I committed so much time preparing for this fight, while I could’ve been looking for another fight. Everybody was writing me off and they expected Margarito to run right through me. If he’s retiring because he doesn’t have what it takes to fight top guys any longer and I’m supposedly a “safe opponent,” why not face me in a farewell fight?”
“This was a major letdown and Margarito handled this like anything but a professional,” stated Dobbs. “My fighter was in camp getting ready to pull off the upset, only for Margarito to cancel the bout after agreeing to reschedule it. I understand that he’s taken a ton of punishment during his career and didn’t want to fight again, but since this is the case, why even sign to face Abel?”
While Dobbs explores other suitable options, Perry will remain at Big Bear as a sparring partner for Jones and Golovkin.

Revenge: The Rematch, Cotto-Margarito II looms for Madison Square Garden Dec. 3

Resurgent Miguel Cotto looks to Madison Square Garden for Dec. 3‏
Michael Marley, Boxing Examiner
There was something missing from the Puerto Rican Day Parade weekend this year in New York.

The huge ethnic celebration did have two Boricua-flavored, club boxing shows put on by Lou DiBella at Roseland Ballroom but, unlike several years past, there was no big fight in the city featuring the island nation’s biggest ring star, Miguel Angel Cotto.

Now I’m hearing that Cotto, who has a 36-2, 29 Kos record as he nears his 31stbirthday in October, may grace the ring at historic Madison Square Garden on Saturday, Dec. 3.

“We’re looking at the Garden,” a member of the Cotto camp told me Saturday night. “They’ve been closed all summer for phase one of a three year, three phase renovation of the arena but they reopen soon with the Knicks and the Rangers returning in the fall.”

That’s the favored site for Cotto’s first bout since his resounding TKO 12 over Nicaragua’s zany Ricardo Mayorga on March 12 in Las Vegas.

Less certain is Cotto’s opposition at 154 pounds.

“We’re looking at all the champions,” the Cotto adviser said. “We’d prefer the revenge rematch with (Antonio) Margarito but it looks like he won’t fight until 2012.”

It’s obvious that Manny Pacquiao promoter Bob Arum hopes to shine up Cotto for a possible second shot at the Pinoy Idol next year.

Cotto made a tradition of fighting in New York in midsummer, beating Yuri Foreman in 2010 at Yankee Stadium and whipping Joshua Clottey at MSG the year before.

Cotto also defeated Brooklyn’s Zab Judah in June of 2007 at “the World’s Most Famous Arena” and also posted June victories over Paulie Malignaggi and Muhammad Abdulaaev in Garden bouts going back to 2006 and to 2005 respectively.

The old song asks, “What street compares with Mott Street in July?” but boxing fans in New York definitely noticed that we just had a Puerto Rican Parade Weekend sans the traditional Cotto bout.

WRIGHT VS. WILLIAMS

Battle-tested veteran Ronald "Winky" Wright (51-4-1, 25 KOs), the most-avoided fighter of the last decade, is a former junior middleweight champion who has scored back-to-back wins against Shane Mosley, as well as defeating Felix Trinidad. A native of St. Petersburg, Fla., he is one of boxing's elite defensive specialists, with a precise jab that picks apart opponents. Although he suffered a decision loss to future Hall-of-Famer Bernard Hopkins in 2007, the 37-year-old Wright will make younger fighters earn their spot among boxing's best.

Two time welterweight champ Paul Williams (36-1, 27 KOs) of Augusta, Ga. is one of the most-feared fighters in boxing. Now on the cusp of stardom, the 27-year-old's height, agility and raw power have made foes think twice about even entering the ring with him. Williams has defeated Antonio Margarito, among others, and now looks to raise his profile in this 12-round contest.

The opening bout features ambitious, hard-charging young Cristobal Arreola (26-0, 23 KOs) and dangerous vet Jameel McCline (39-9-3, 23 KOs) in a 12-round heavyweight clash. Arreola, of Riverside, Cal., can deliver thunderous blows and is riding a string of 13 consecutive fights in which he has sent his opponent crashing to the canvas. Next, he looks to prove himself the most serious threat to titleholders in the division.

Jameel McCline, from West Palm Beach, Fla., has fought the best the division has to offer, amassing 51 professional bouts against the likes of Wladimir Klitschko, Chris Byrd and Samuel Peter. An imposing 6'5" and 270 pounds, McCline's experience, ring generalship and hard hitting should provide a formidable challenge for Arreola.

No Holds Barred: Ted Rybka of GLAAD on UFC

No Holds Barred: Ted Rybka of GLAAD on UFC

http://nhbnews.podOmatic.com/entry/2009-04-03T15_45_56-07_00

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with Ted Rybka, Director of Sports Media of Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) (http://www.glaad.org/). After UFC president Dana White issued a video blog with a rant including homophobic and sexist slurs, and after GLAAD received numerous complaints about this, Ted contacted UFC and White. An apology by White has since been posted on YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IVtTSXLsSlA).

In our interview with Ted, we spoke about why such slurs can be so harmful to the very well-being of people perceived as being gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender. We discussed White's apology, and what further contact GLAAD will have with UFC. We also discussed the efforts of GLAAD to educate both the media and the people about homophobia and sports.

Also, No Holds Barred is available through iTunes at http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewPodcast?id=150801513&s=143441.

The show is in MP3 format, so may take some time to download.

The No Holds Barred theme song is called "The Heist", by musician Ian Carpenter (http://iancarpenter.com/).

Make sure to check out my regular weekly boxing show SecondsOut Radio, at http://www.secondsout.com/radio/. On this week's edition of SecondsOut Radio, we once again discuss some of the good and bad going on in boxing. We begin with the ever-burgeoning negative side. We follow up on the commentaries of the past two weeks on this show by Dr. Margaret Goodman, focusing again on why the March 14 fight between Amir Khan and Marco Antonio Barrera should have been stopped far sooner than it was because of a severe cut on Barrera's forehead due to an accidental head clash in the first round. We discuss the latest findings in the Antonio Margarito-Javier Capetillo hand wrap scandal, where authorities in California have officially revealed that the hand wraps they were attempting to use against Shane Mosley in their January 24 fight contained calcium and sulfur, two key ingredients of plaster of Paris. We explain that while lifetime bans of Margarito and Capetillo might be justified in this case, there is, unfortunately and incredibly, no central body in boxing which has the authority to issue such a ban. And we also discuss how the American boxing establishment has let the marquee division in boxing, the heavyweights, slip right through their hands and end up centered in Europe. On the positive side, we preview the important 140-pound title unification fight between WBO champion Kendall Holt (25-2, 13 KOs) and WBC champion Timothy Bradley (23-0, 11 KOs). This fight, between these two Americans, will take place Saturday, April 4, at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. It will be telecast live in the U.S. on Showtime. We spoke with both Kendall Holt and Timothy Bradley to get their views on what they expect to happen in this fight. Leave Shane Mosley Alone

The World Boxing Council has begun an investigation of Shane Mosley in the wake of the recent publication of Mosley’s sworn testimony that he used BALCO’s potent and highly controlled performance-enhancing drugs in the lead-up to a 2003 fight against Oscar De La Hoya.

“It was a real surprise to read that Mosley has confessed that he did take those medicines, those drugs that are totally prohibited by the WBC,” said Jose Sulaiman, the WBC’s president. “The WBC rules state that we must have a hearing. This is a matter of serious concern to us.”

About three months after Mosley won a WBC junior middleweight title in that 2003 fight, he sat before a grand jury describing the potent regimen of steroids and EPO he had used for his training. The Daily News published portions of his testimony earlier this month, along with doping calendars.

Mosley has maintained that he did not know the drugs he was taking were banned or illegal.

Monday, Sulaiman directed his group’s legal counsel to gather evidence on the Mosley matter and put it before the WBC’s 29-member board of governors, which can then vote on sanctions. The rules allow the organization to issue disqualifications or severe fines, even after a fight has concluded.

“Thus far the WBC has seen only press reports, and must therefore investigate any available evidence and review it, in terms of the WBC rules and regulations’ anti-doping provisions” said the WBC’s legal counsel, Robert Lenhardt.

Lenhardt’s efforts will coincide with a hearing, scheduled for Jan. 15, in an old defamation case that Mosley brought in federal court in California in the spring against BALCO founder Victor Conte. The suit was dropped by Mosley in August and immediately refiled in New York state court.

The California defamation suit claims that Conte told newspapers, including The News, that Conte watched as Mosley injected himself with EPO and that he knew what he was using. Conte’s lawyers have filed a motion seeking attorney’s fees and sanctions in that case, which they called an “abusive and meritless action.”

They invoked California’s laws designed to protect plaintiffs from meritless lawsuits meant to silence public participants. Mosley’s lawyer, Judd Burstein, filed a cross motion asking for attorney’s fees and costs in defending Conte’s motion. When contacted by The News Monday night, Burstein cut short an attempt to ask him about the WBC investigation.

Conte, who is in possession of the grand jury transcripts because he was an original defendant in the BALCO prosecution, told The News Monday night that he is “more than willing to cooperate with any investigation of Shane Mosley’s use of performance-enhancing drugs.”

I just hope they leave Shane Mosley alone till after the fight against Antonio Margarito. I don’t want Mosley to say “I lost to Margarito because I was not focus, thanks to the World Boxing Council.”

Margarito vs.Mosley Jan 24th 2008 in Los Angeles, CA

Boxing is back at The Staples Center in downtown LA on Saturday, January 24th 2009. The two combatants are the Mexican favorite Antonio Margarito (37-5, 27 KO’s) putting his WBA Welterweight title on the line against Shane Mosley (45-5, 38 KO’s). Margarito is 30 and stands 5’11” and Mosley is 37 and goes 5’9”. The fight will be on HBO World Championship Boxing and starts at 7 pm PT. The press conference today brought out the brass from HBO, Top Rank and Golden Boy Promotions to name a few. While there were no official signs or flashy posters yet, the fight looks to be billed as “The Battle for LA” per Bob Arum. The tickets are priced between $50 and $300 and the promoters put out an offer that would allow any fan that buys $1000 worth of tickets to receive a glove autographed by both fighters. It’s a steep price tag for the souvenir but not a bad idea either way.

Mosley now has Nazim Richardson as his trainer and team Margarito is intact with Sergio Diaz and Frank Espinoza.

Mosley and Nazim Richardson

Both fighters took the obligatory turn at the mike and both looked confident and relaxed. Both camps promised that this would be an action fight with both teams predicting obviously.

We all know Margarito will bring pressure and Mosley will look to use speed and angles. The same issue that will haunt De La Hoya may rear its head for Mosley in this fight. Mosley did not look pound for pound good in his last contest with Mayorga and he is now fighting a non-stop pressure fighter who can also take you out. Many will say this is a bad fight for Mosley as his opponent can make you look awful if you are not perfect like Pacquiao showed De La Hoya. On the other side, Mosley has made a career of beating “bigger” men; F. Vargas, Mayorga, A. Diaz, Stone and he went 12 rounds with Miguel Cotto. Can Mosley out box Margarito while piling up points of his own or can he KO Margarito, Mosley says “He is going to end up getting knocked out because he’ll come right at me and I’ll catch him.” I favor Margarito based more on Mosley’s last outing and his age and a loss of reflex and speed. However, Mosley has never been knocked out and has been in with big punchers. Shane can hang in for 12 rounds and he can cause Marg. some problems but he has to have a great game plan and the will to stick with it. This fight is a litmus test for Mosley’s career. If he wins he is still a major player in the division and could look to rematch Cotto. A loss, especially a bad one, would probably mean another Golden Boy associate sticks to promoting 100% of the time. Crossroads fights are sure fun aren’t they?
