Bobby Gunn To Battle James Toney For IBA World Heavyweight Championship

Bobby Gunn To Battle James Toney For IBA World Heavyweight Championship
Former IBA Cruiserweight Champion Bobby “The Celtic Warrior” will be fighting current IBA World Heavyweight Champion James “Lights Out” Toney April 7 in a 12-round fight at the Landers Center in Southaven, MS.

Gunn (21-4, 18 KO) has been inactive from the squared circle since his title fight against Tomasz Adamek in September of 2009, a fight he lost due to a premature stoppage. Since, Gunn has stepped away from the gloved sport and has focused on the reemergence of bare knuckle boxing.

Last summer Gunn claimed the World Heavyweight BKB Title when he defeated Richard Stewart by way of KO in the third round of the first sanctioned BKB fight in 123 years.

In recent weeks there has been much buzz about a potential cruiserweight “super fight” between Gunn and Roy Jones Jr., though nothing materialized When presented the opportunity to fight Toney for the heavyweight title, Gunn quickly accepted the offer.

“It is an honor for me to have the chance to fight for such a prestigious title,” said Gunn. “I have worked my whole life to get a shot like this, and I know that James and I will put on a heavyweight fight that will bring the excitement back to a division that badly needs it.”

This fight is more than another title fight. It is historic in that it is the first time a World Heavyweight BKB Champion will fight a World Heavyweight Boxing Champion; if Bobby wins, he will be the first fighter to hold both belts concurrently.

Also with a win Bobby Gunn will join the likes of fellow IBA World champions, including Arturo Gatti, Oscar De La Hoya, Shane Mosely, Roy Jones Jr., amongst several others.

Toney (73-7, 44 KO) won the vacant IBA Heavyweight title in 2008, and is a multiple world champion, winning fights over Evander Holyfield, Hasim Rahman and John Ruiz, to name a few.

“James Toney is a great champion, and a very tough fighter,” said Gunn. “I have waited for this chance my whole life. This is my dream come true, to fight for the world heavyweight championship. I am ready for war; to beat me, James Toney will have to kill me."

No Holds Barred: Frank Shamrock

No Holds Barred: Frank Shamrock

http://nhbnews.podOmatic.com/entry/2008-12-15T18_41_14-08_00

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with the legendary mixed martial arts fighter Frank Shamrock.

Frank has just revamped his web site, FrankShamrock.com (http://frankshamrock.com/), and added numerous user-friendly, social networking features, where one can sign up for free as a member.

We had a wide-ranging discussion beginning with the web site, and covering his view of his fight with Cung Le this past March, what his next fight may be, the prospects of a mixed martial arts fight with his brother Ken Shamrock, what has happened to EliteXC, his role in that company, the state of mixed martial arts, the need for a fighters' union in MMA, and more.

Also, No Holds Barred is available through iTunes at http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewPodcast?id=150801513&s=143441.

The show is in MP3 format, so may take some time to download.

The No Holds Barred theme song is called "The Heist", by musician Ian Carpenter (http://iancarpenter.com/).

Make sure to check out my regular weekly boxing show SecondsOut Radio, at http://www.secondsout.com/radio/. On this week's edition of SecondsOut Radio, we had the pleasure of speaking with one of the most knowledgeable people alive in the sport of boxing, the legendary matchmaker Johnny Bos. Right after the marathon of televised fights on Saturday, December 13, we had a lengthy discussion by telephone about the fights themselves and also numerous pressing issues in boxing. We began with the Yuri Foreman-James Moore junior middleweight fight, won by Foreman by a lopsided ten-round unanimous decision (Johnny is Yuri's matchmaker). We also analyzed the Kendall Holt-Demetrius Hopkins, James Toney-Fres Oquendo, Wladimir Klitschko-Hasim Rahman, and Shawn Estrada-Shaun Spaid fights, as well as the Tomasz Adamek-Steve Cunningham and Joseph Agbeko-William Gonzalez fights from Thursday, December 11. Interspersed in our discussion were commentaries on why boxing is killing itself today, why young fighters are not being developed properly, how boxing is more "crooked" today than in the past, which major promoter has a history of putting on the best and most competitive cards, the many obstacles Johnny is trying to overcome to continue working in boxing, and more. Johnny is a one-of-a-kind personality and a genuine throwback to the glory days of boxing, so this interview should stimulate some very lively and absolutely necessary discussion about the fate of the sport and business of boxing. It is free to listen to SecondsOut Radio, but you must register to gain access to it. Just click here, http://www.secondsout.com/radio/, and listen, learn, and enjoy.

“FAST” EDDIE CHAMBERS ON THE ROAD TO THE HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP AS HE FACES CISSE SALIF THIS SATURDAY

PHILADELPHIA— This Saturday night at The Morango Hotel & Resort in Cabazon, California, IBF number-six ranked Heavyweight in the world, “Fast” Eddie Chambers will look to get closer to his ultimate goal in bringing the Heavyweight championship of the world back to Philadelphia.

Chambers, 32-1 with eighteen knockouts takes on veteran Cisse Salif on the undercard of James Toney- Fres Oquendo bout, which will be televised by Versus.

Chambers is taking nothing for granted as he has had a tough training camp in Philadelphia.

“I treat every fight like it’s a world championship fight” said Chambers, just hours away from boarding a plane to California.

“Opportunity and success comes disguised as hard work and we worked very hard for this fight. Salif has been in with some of the best fighters in the world and has a good knockout record so he has to be respected.”

“A win here gets me right back to where I was before the Povetkin fight as I believe I should be in line to take on one of champions in the division. Everyone knows why David Haye ran away from me after we accepted terms for a fight with him.”

“I feel that I am the première fighter in the Heavyweight division at this point in time. I have a great team with my promoter’s Goossen-Tutor and Score America and trainer in Rob Murray Sr. We are ready to what we have to do to become The Heavyweight champion of the world.”

See you at the Fights and Thanks for your time.

THE BOZ: AMERICA'S MOST FEARED HEAVYWEIGHT

Newly-crowned IBF North American heavyweight champ Cedric "The Boz" Boswell must be the most feared man in the heavyweight division In the past month pites James Toney, David Haye and Chis Arreola all turned down The Boz . Boswell challenged Toney who instead picked Tony Thompson whose last fight was a knockout loss to Wladimir Klitschko. Arreola will fight Travis Walker in his next bout. Walker was knocked out in only 15 seconds one year ago by 10 fight preliminary boxer T.J. Wilson. Then, David Haye ducked The Boz and promptly knocked out Monte Barrett who has seen his better days. "Are American Pretender's afraid of competitive fights with me," asks
Cedric Boswell

Cedric also offered to take on the giant Russian, WBA Champ Nikolai Valuev, but was turned down in favor of Evander Holyfield whose selection probably came through a Senior Citizen run-off with George Foreman. Unrated Holyfield hasn't won a title fight since 2001 despite chances with Chris Byrd and Sultan Ibragimov. Boswell has offered to fight the winner of that bout, winner take all , anywhere in the World , including Moscow.

Fellow Atlanta resident, Undefeated Kevin Johnson keeps calling out all the contenders and claims nobody wants to fight him. However Boswell's name is never mentioned even though he is World Rated by the IBF and is the IBF North American Heavyweight Champion. He won the Championship on Aug 29th by destroying 27-0 Russian born Roman Greenberg in only 2 one-sided rounds. Boswell has consistently offered to put his belt on the line against Johnson in a "Winner-Take All Battle of Atlanta."

Promoters should take note that Cedric is the only World-rated Heavyweight that has no ties to any Promotional outfit. "The Wizard of Boz" stands 6 foot 3 and weighs 230. He is ready, willing and able to fight any rated heavyweight anywhere in the World. His record to date is an outstanding 28-1 with 22 knockouts. He has not lost a fight in over 5 years. Apparently there's a new Sheriff in town, but the Pretenders want him locked up!

See you at the Fights and Thanks for your time.

OLEG MASKAEV…"I'LL REPLACE POVETKIN & FIGHT KLITSCHKO, WINNER TAKE ALL !!

I have lost only one fight in the last 6 years. The bizarre and strange circumstances surrounding the Peter bout, including the possibility of criminal activity, will all be coming out when we appear before the Court of Sports Arbitration.

If Klitschko selects Rahman as his opponent, then Klitschko is facing the loser, not the winner. I have stopped Rahman not once, but twice, the last time winning the WBC Heavyweight Championship from him. What has Rahman done since I stopped him? He quit against Toney and then had a life and death against my sparring partner, Zuri Lawrence.

Styles make fights, and Klitschko's style is made to order for me. I stopped Vitali as an amature and I will stop Vladimir as a pro. I know how to rough him up. I will knock him out.

Talk is cheap; I'll put my money where my mouth is. As far as the purse, let us fight, winner take all. If you are not interested in another mis-match Vlad, have Shelly Finkel call my promoter, Dennis Rappaport. I'm prepared to fight you in the U.S., in Russia, in Germany, and even in your own living room. Let's get it on !!"

Boxers, Promoters And Analysts Weigh In On Peter-Klitschko Championship Bout‏

‘THIS COULD BE THE MOST COMPELLING HEAVYWEIGHT MATCHUP IN YEARS.’ WHAT THEY’RE SAYING ABOUT SATURDAY’S SAMUEL PETER-VITALI KLITSCHKO FIGHT ON SHOWTIME

It’s just talk, but there’s been plenty of it leading up to Saturday’s WBC Heavyweight Championship between Samuel Peter (30-1, 23 KOs) and Vitali Klitschko (35-2, 34 KOs). With just five days remaining till the bout, here is a sampling of what top fighters, promoters and analysts are saying about the SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING fight, which will be shown on same-day tape delay from the O2 World Arena in Berlin, Germany, before the Antonio Tarver-Chad Dawson IBF Light Heavyweight Championship live at 9 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the west coast).

WLADIMIR KLITSCHKO – IBF/WBO Heavyweight Champion

"Vitali will make history on October 11th. On that day we will become the first two brothers ever to be heavyweight champions at the same time. We've been dreaming about it so much, for so long and on October 11th it will become a reality."

"Peter, just like other heavyweights, is able to punch hard and I think that Vitali knows this and will knock Peter out before anything else can happen."

"Vitali's last opponent, Danny Williams, was the same size and style as Peter and Vitali was exceptional against him. I expect the same from Vitali when he faces Peter."

STEVE ALBERT – SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING Announcer

"There is so much on the line for both fighters. Sam Peter has to beat Vitali Klitschko to get a rematch with Vitali's younger brother, Wladimir for a chance to prove he's the premier heavyweight in the world.

“After a four-plus-year layoff, Vitali Klitschko wants to resurrect his career and fulfill his dream of joining Wladimir as the only siblings in boxing history to hold world heavyweight titles simultaneously. Given the current state of the heavyweight division, Peter vs. Vladimir Klitschko could be the most compelling heavyweight matchup in years."

JAMES TONEY - Three-Time World Champion

“It means that we get rid of one of the Klitschko sisters who don’t deserve to be in this fight and it gets me closer to evening the score with the big ugly Samuel Peter.”

“I predict that Peter will win by KO. He is too strong and has learned too much fighting me to lose to a big sissy like Vitali Klitschko, who has been off for way too long.”

CHRIS BYRD – Two-Time World Heavyweight Champion

“It’s a huge fight for the heavyweight division and for boxing. We could potentially have brothers simultaneously holding pieces of the world heavyweight title, making them the most dominant brothers in the history of the sport. Who is going to beat them?”

“Now, normally, I would have to go with Vitali Klitschko in this fight. He’s taller, and more importantly, he is mentally tougher than Samuel Peter. He’s even more mentally tough than Wladimir. And don’t forget, he punches pretty impressively too.”

“However, I’ve got to go with the guy who has been active. The time off, the bad back… the time off is the biggest thing for Vladimir to overcome. Another concern is to go right into a title fight against one of the best out there after a long layoff.”

“Style wise, Vitali Klitschko has the edge by far with his height and reach. The Klitschkos are tough to beat. If Vitali uses his height and reach well, and if he can keep that going for as long as it lasts, Peter is going to have a tough time.”

“It should be a great fight either way.”

OLEG MASKAEV – Former WBC Heavyweight Champion

“I have been in ring with both Klitschko and Peter. I was in the ring against Klitschko as an amateur, and I fought Peter in March. … It’s a real interesting fight and certainly a significant one for the heavyweight division.”

“When it comes to Vitali, one of the biggest challenges is inactivity. I would like nothing better than to get back into the ring with Peter. Klitschko is more experienced, but Peter is active. The question is how Klitschko will come out of camp. If he can overcome the rust, then he will win.”

“Overall, as long as he can overcome the time off, I give the edge to Klitschko.”

AL BERNSTEIN - SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING Announcer

“The heavyweight division is in need of compelling match-ups and fighters that will excite the fans. Because of his punching power, Samuel Peter remains a candidate to do that. His rivalry with the Klitschkos continues. The intrigue of Vitali now fighting Peter, after his brother had a strong match with him, adds spice to this match-up. We are all wondering if Vitali can perform up to his previous level after this long layoff. It all makes for a very interesting night of heavyweight boxing."

DINO DUVA – Samuel Peter’s Promoter

"The Samuel Peter-Vitali Klitschko fight is very significant for several reasons. This is the most crucial fight to determine if a true heavyweight title unification bout can take place in the foreseeable future.”

“If Peter wins, this unification is very possible, and will set up the biggest fight in the heavyweight division in a long time with a rematch against Wladimir Klitschko. If that happens, it will allow the heavyweight division to regain much of its lost prominence. And, If Klitschko wins, it will be very unique and historic, and will be the first time ever that two brothers are heavyweight champions at the same time."

"Because of the styles, this bout will not go the distance and will be a great brawl. I can see both fighters going down. The strongest fighter and the one with the most heart will survive."

STEVE FARHOOD – ShoBox Expert Analyst

“Peter-Klitschko is among the most intriguing fights of the year for three reasons: 1) It is critical to the present and future of the heavyweight division. 2) It is a battle of big punchers with very different styles, and 3) It is virtually impossible to predict what's going to happen.

“Both fighters have the ability to score one-punch knockouts, but Klitschko’s four-year layoff is the X-factor.”

“If Klitschko was active and in his prime, I'd pick him to win. But can he survive a long and draining fight? I'll go with Peter. Besides, if Vitali wins, he'll never fight his brother, greatly reducing the chances of a unified title.”

DAVID DINKINS JR. – SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING Executive Producer

“Samuel Peter has emerged as a force in the heavyweight division. His powerful punching ability and durable chin have always made him formidable. But now with his improved conditioning and defense, he can make a legitimate claim to being the world's No. 1 heavyweight.”

“If not derailed by injuries, Vitali Klitschko might have dominated the heavyweight division in the post-Lennox Lewis era alongside his brother, Wladimir. This comeback fight is his last chance to prove what might have been and an opportunity to rewrite his legacy.”

RAYMOND SMALTZ, SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING producer

“For Vitali Klitschko, returning to the fight game for a heavyweight title shot after being away from the ring since December of 2004, would be an unprecedented accomplishment. But a victory would mark him down in the annals of athletic competition as one of the most remarkable comeback stories in our generation.”

“In the immortal words of the late comedian, Rodney Dangerfield, ‘Sam Peter gets no respect!’ But, if he is able to exact revenge against the man who's brother is the No. 1-ranked heavyweight in the world and defeated him in a unanimous decision four years ago, it will go a long way to soothing those old wounds and give Peter the kind of acceptance in the boxing community and around the world...that he so desperately seeks.”

“Beibut The Beast” Boxing’s Top Secret Project

KAZAKHSTAN– Former Kazakhstan Olympian Beibut “The Beast” Shumenov is the greatest fighter in the world that most boxing fans haven’t heard of, at least not at this stage of his young professional career.

In less than 10 months, 24-year-old Shumenov has won all six of his pro fights, five by knockout, capturing three title belts – WBC Asian Boxing Council, WBO Asia Pacific and PABA Interim light heavyweight championships.

Earlier this month in Chimkent, Kazakhaston, Shumenov (6-0, 5 KOs) easily won a 12-round decision, in his WBC and WBO Asian title defenses, against former WBC title-holder Montell “Ice” Griffin (50-8, 30 KOs), whose victims over the years include a pair of future Hall of Famers, Roy Jones, Jr. and James Toney (twice). Beibut won every round, nearly stopping Griffin in the opening round, en route to shutting out the former world champion by lop-sided scores of 120-108, 120-108, 120-107. After the fight Griffin, rated No. 22 by the WBA, was taken to the hospital for stitches for a cut over his eye as well as to get his ribs examined after Beibut’s devastating body attack.

Shumenov, already rated No. 15 by the WBO prior to his victory against Griffin, was highly touted in the 2004 Olympics, winning his opening bout against Polish representative Aleksy Kuziemsky (presently 15-0 as a pro prospect), 37-22. Amidst rumors of a hand injury, Beibut was defeated in the round of 16 by Turkey’s Ihsan Yildorim Tarham, 27-19, in the same light heavyweight division Andre Ward of the United States won a gold medal.

Last November in North Carolina, Shumenov won his pro debut with a first-round TKO of Walter Edwards, followed in order by an opening-round knockout of Cedric Howard in Florida, and fourth-round TKO of 68-fight veteran Shannon Miller in Tennessee. In April,

Beibut put Donnell Wiggins (24-10-4) to sleep in the second round of their fight in Kazakhstan for the WBC Asian and PABA Interim light heavyweight crowns. Ten days later, Beibut stopped Lavell Fingers (26-2) in the first-round of their April 22 fight, also held in Kazakhstan. Beibut successfully defended his two Asian titles and also collected the PABA Interim crown.

Trained by Kenny Adams and advised by E Point K Consulting, Shumenov is resting in Kazakhaston and will return to Las Vegas in late September, early October to prepare for his next fight. Beibut plans to make a title run in 2009.

The word is slowly getting out in boxing: “Beibut The Beast” is on the loose!
