SUGAR SHANE MOSLEY TO ATTEND FRIDAY, AUGUST 9 SHOBOX EVENT AT FANTASY SPRINGS RESORT CASINO

Sugar Shane Mosley, a future Hall of Fame boxer who has forged a legacy as one of the sport's most accomplished fighters of this era, will greet fans at Fantasy Springs Resort Casino in Indio, Calif. prior to the August 9 ShoBox: The New Generation tripleheader featuring one of the hottest heavyweights in the game, unbeaten knockout artist Deontay "The Bronze Bomber" Wilder, which will be televised live on SHOWTIME®. 

 

A local favorite who first made his name on the Southern California fight scene (including a 1996 fight at Fantasy Springs Resort Casino), Pomona's Mosley got his big break when he faced IBF Lightweight World Champion Philip Holiday on August 2, 1997.  Sugar Shane won the bout by unanimous decision showing off his dazzling speed and power that he later used to clean out the lightweight division.  With lightweight conquered, Mosley moved up two divisions to the welterweight and eventually defeated WBC Welterweight World Champion Oscar De La Hoya. In subsequent years, Mosley would win a third divisional title at 154 pounds and continue to fight the best in the game, including Floyd Mayweather, Manny Pacquiao, Antonio Margarito, Fernando Vargas and Miguel Cotto.  In his most recent bout on May 18, Mosley defeated Mexican star Pablo Cesar Cano.

 Mosley will be on hand to meet fans, sign autographs and take pictures from 6:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. inside the Fantasy Springs Special Events Center.  The meet and greet is open to the public with the purchase of a ticket to the fights.

FOX DEPORTES AIRS SHANE MOSLEY CLASSIC FIGHTS AGAINST SERGIO MORA & FERNANDO VARGAS ON MAY 18 IMMEDIATELY BEFORE HIS COMEBACK FIGHT AGAINST PABLO CESAR CANO

As the return of Sugar Shane Mosley approaches, FOX Deportes will celebrate the return of one of the future Hall of Famer on Saturday, May 18, with back-to-back Classics shows that will lead into Mosley's comeback fight against Mexico's Pablo Cesar Cano which will be broadcast live on FOX Sports Networks and FOX Deportes from The Grand Oasis in Cancun, Mexico.

At 7:00 pm ET, it's a trip back to September of 2010, when Mosley squared off against Sergio Mora in a 12-round battle of former champions fighting their way back to the top. Then at 8:00 pm ET, it's the Classics premiere of Mosley's February 2006 win over "Ferocious" Fernando Vargas.

All of this action leads up to the live FOX Sports Networks (9:30 p.m. ET) and FOX Deportes (9:00 p.m. ET) telecasts from Cancun headlined by the welterweight battle between Mosley and Cano 

Fighting at 154 pounds, Three-Division World Champion Sugar Shane Mosley battled reality series "The Contender" winner and former Super Welterweight World Champion Sergio "The Latin Snake" Mora on September 18, 2010 at STAPLES Center in 2010. After 12 rounds, a draw verdict was rendered in the bout.

Two of the most popular fighters of this era, Mosley and Vargas battled it out for Southern California bragging rights at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas on February 25, 2006. In the end, it was Mosley who emerged victorious via a tenth round technical knockout in the exciting contest, but the two would meet once again five months later with Mosley emerging victorious again.

With the fire to compete still burning brightly, former Three Division World Champion and future Hall of Famer Sugar Shane Mosley will return to the boxing ring on Saturday, May 18 to square off against highly regarded welterweight contender Pablo Cesar "El Demoledor" Cano in a temporary venue which will be set up on the beach in front of The Grand Oasis in Cancun, Mexico.  The welterweight fight will air live on FOX Deportes in the United States and on Televisa in Mexico on a delayed basis.

The owner of multiple world titles in the lightweight, welterweight and junior middleweight divisions, Sugar Shane Mosley (46-8-1, 39 KO's) has compiled a career resume any fighter would envy.  Having scored wins over Oscar De La Hoya, Fernando Vargas, Ricardo Mayorga, Antonio Margarito and Jesse James Leija,, Pomona, California's Mosley has also shared the ring with the likes of Floyd Mayweather, Manny Pacquiao, Miguel Cotto, Canelo Alvarez and Winky Wright, thrilling fans for years with his style, speed and ring savvy.  In his most recent fight in May of 2012, Mosley lost a 12 round decision to Alvarez, but after a year away from the ring, Sugar Shane is back and ready to face a stern test in Cano.

Former WBA Interim Super Lightweight World Champion Pablo Cesar "El Demoledor" Cano (25-2-1, 19 KO's) made a big impression on the boxing world when he took a last minute fight with future Hall of Famer Erik "El Terrible" Morales in 2011 in which he went 11 hard rounds before losing to the Mexican superstar.  In his 147-pound debut last October he impressed once again when he went 12 hard-fought rounds with WBA Welterweight World Champion Paulie "Magic Man" Malignaggi, scoring an 11^th round knockdown before losing a controversial split decision.  Undeterred, the 23-year-old Cano has the opportunity to not just get back on a winning track, but to defeat a legend on May 18.

The "Ring Kings: Mayweather vs. Cotto" pay-per-view card is set and some of the toughest competitors in boxing today will be featured when undefeated rising star Jessie Vargas faces-off against perennial contender Alfonso Gomez and, in the opening pay-per-view bout, exciting 154 lb. contender DeAndre "The Bull" Latimore takes on former World Champion Carlos "El Indio" Quintana. The two 10-round bouts will take place prior to the WBA Super Welterweight Championship between Floyd Mayweather and Miguel Cotto and the Canelo Alvarez vs. Sugar Shane Mosley WBC Super Welterweight title bout Saturday, May 5 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. Twenty-two-year-old Las Vegas resident Jessie Vargas (18-0, 9 KO's) is one of boxing's fastest rising stars with notable wins over Arturo Morua, Walter Estrada and former World Champion Vivian Harris. Last September on the Mayweather vs. Ortiz card, Vargas proved that he is one of boxing's top contenders with an exciting 10-round decision victory over fellow contender Josesito Lopez. Eager to keep his momentum going, Vargas scored a near-shutout win over Lanardo Tyner in February and is now hoping to add Alfonso Gomez to his collection of high-profile wins.

As a member of the cast in the hit boxing reality series "The Contender," Alfonso Gomez (23-5-2, 12 KO's) became the fighter to beat as he defeated the show's top contenders, as well as other top-tier opponents such as Ben Tackie, Jesus Soto Karass and World Champions Arturo Gatti and Jose Luis Castillo. A two-time world title challenger who faced Miguel Cotto in 2008 and Canelo Alvarez in 2011, the 31-year-old from Guadalajara begins another quest for the title on May 5.

Twenty-six-year-old St. Louis-native DeAndre Latimore (23-3, 17 KO's) now resides in Las Vegas and the change of scenery has done wonders for the aptly nicknamed "Bull." As a former super welterweight title challenger who lost a highly controversial split decision to Cory Spinks in 2009, Latimore is looking to regain momentum and battle his way back into title contention. With three consecutive wins, including a memorable 10-round victory over Milton Nunez in February, he is closing in on another shot at 154-pound gold.

Moca, Puerto Rico's Carlos Quintana (28-3, 22 KO's) is a southpaw like the St. Louis native Latimore; however, "El Indio" is more matador than bull, with his excellent boxing skills, which led him to a world welterweight title win in 2008 over a then-unbeaten Paul Williams. With wins over top contenders including Joel Julio, Francisco Campos and Nurhan Suleymanoglu, the 35-year-old Quintana has won three of his last four bouts, most recently stopping Yoryi Estrella in nine rounds in February of 2011.

Boxing Ring Kings Floyd Mayweather and Miguel Cotto Face Off on the Big Screen

This Cinco de Mayo, boxing superstar and seven-time World Champion Floyd "Money" Mayweather will take on current WBA Super Welterweight World Champion Miguel Cotto in the big screen event, Ring Kings: Mayweather vs. Cotto Fight Live on Saturday, May 5 at 9:00 p.m. ET/6:00 p.m. PT. Broadcast in high definition to nearly 440 movie theaters nationwide from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, the highly anticipated match-up will give fans a ringside seat as Mayweathersteps up in weight to challenge Cotto for the super welterweight championship. Cotto (37-2, 30 KO's) is Puerto Rico's most exciting fighter, one of its greatest of all time and defined by his warrior spirit. He has held a world title every year since 2004 and has won 16 of the 18 world championships bouts in which he has fought. Capturing the WBA Super Welterweight title in June of 2010, Cotto took on then undefeated defending champion Yuri Foreman at Yankee Stadium, handing him his first defeat. He is coming off of the second defense of his title, which he defended with a spectacular tenth-round knockout of Antonio Margarito. With this knockout, he also avenged his July 2008 loss to Margarito.

With his ferocious and fan-friendly style in the ring, at just 21 years of age Alvarez (39-0-1, 29 KO's) is Mexico's latest boxing superhero. After turning pro at just 15 years old, Alvarez tore through the local competition in Mexico and to date has only one blemish on his record - a four round draw with Jorge Juarez (which took place in 2006). Since then no one has come close to beating him. Alvarez took home his first world championship in 2011 and defended it with knockouts of Ryan Rhodes, Alfonzo Gomez and Kermit Cintron respectively later in the year. On May 5, he faces his most significant opponent to date in Sugar Shane Mosley.

Having defined the word "fighter" for nearly two decades, Mosley is one of the most revered boxers of this era. A stellar amateur that just missed out on the 1992 Olympics, Mosley has gone on to strike gold as a professional. With his stunning defeat of Oscar de la Hoya in 2000, Mosley jumped to the top of the list of the best pound for pound fighters in the world. He held that position until losing his belt to Vernon Forrest in 2002 but has since climbed back to the top by being a regular in boxing's biggest super fights from 2005-2011. With this fight against Alvarez, Mosley looks to win his seventh world title at 40 years old.

THE PRESSURE OF A PERFECT RECORD; WHEN SOMEONE'S "0" JUST MIGHT GO

Boxing is not a sport that readily lends itself to statistics, but one set of numbers is as elemental as a left-right combination: a fighter's wins, losses and draws. We often overvalue a good record and misinterpret a mediocre one; there are dozens of 10-loss veterans who are better than young fighters with only one or two defeats.

Nothing, however, catches our eye like a perfect record and when one or both undefeated fighters square off, you can count on either the ring announcer or the TV commentators declaring, "Somebody's '0' has got to go!" or "Maybe tonight his '0' might just go!"

Yet the fascination with a fighter who's never lost remains strong. For instance, the appeal of Floyd Mayweather, who's "0" is on the line against Sugar Shane Mosley on May 1 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas and live on HBO Pay-Per-View®, can be attributed to his sustained excellence and his star power, but there's something more. Over the course of his 15-year career, Mayweather's engaged in 40 fights, and each time he's proven himself the better man.

Maybe we focus on a perfect record more than the fighters do...

"I don't think about the '0'," said Mayweather, whose last loss came on July 22, 1996, at the Olympic Games in Atlanta. "I think about winning. Everything takes care of itself if you win.

"Of course it's a great thing to be undefeated, but I don't consciously think about it when I'm preparing for the next fight."

The record against which all others are judged is former heavyweight champion Rocky Marciano's mark of 49-0. In September 1985, then-WBC titlist Larry Holmes was 48-0 when he lost to Michael Spinks.

"I was always tying records, breaking records; it didn't mean [expletive] to me," Holmes said. "I didn't care. What was important was making money, keeping the title, and proving people wrong.

"The undefeated record meant I wasn't getting beaten up, and that meant a lot to me."

In November 2008, super middleweight/light heavyweight champion Joe Calzaghe fought for the last time. He retired with a record of 46-0. What made Calzaghe different from most unbeaten fighters is that his toughest tests, vs. Jeff Lacy, Bernard Hopkins and Mikkel Kessler, came toward the conclusion of his hall of fame career.

"I never really dwelled on the '0' until close to the end, when I realized I had only a couple of fights left, I was undefeated and I could retire that way," Calzaghe said. "I always hated to lose, and when I did so as an amateur, it burned me up inside and created my motivation for winning.

"Taking big fights wasn't a risk for me because I believed in myself and went for it. I can say, however, that it was a relief when it was all over and I finished undefeated and ahead of the game."

Calzaghe certainly fought the best available opposition, as did unbeatens Marciano and Ricardo Lopez (51-0-1), but in today's boxing world, there are four major titles per division and, as a result, champions can protect their records more easily than in the past. That's largely why alphabet titlists like junior welterweight Terry Marsh (26-0-1), welterweight Michael Loewe (28-0) and junior featherweight Ji Won Kim (16-0-2) were able to retire without having lost. Marsh and Loewe defended their respective titles only once each.

The question remains...is a perfect record a sign of perfection or does an imperfect record reveal anything at all? Consider the following:

*Ninety-nine percent of boxing historians rank Sugar Ray Robinson as the best fighter in history. He lost 19 times.

*Muhammad Ali was "The Greatest" despite losing five fights. In fact, he arguably gained more respect in his first loss, to Joe Frazier, than in building a record of 31-0.

*Since 1900, eight world champions have retired-and stayed retired-without having lost a fight. Even at their respective peaks, five of them never made the pound-for-pound top 10.

*Among today's elite, Bernard Hopkins lost his professional debut and Manny Pacquiao lost to an opponent who went 2-4-1 in his next seven fights.

*Robinson's only loss in his first 132 bouts

In evaluating recent champions, then, we must look at their body of work, and not just their records. The resume of five-division titlist Mayweather is impressive, making his perfect record all the more eye-popping. Maybe, just maybe, remaining undefeated and keeping his "0" means more than he'll acknowledge.

"No one wants to lose their '0'," said Floyd Mayweather Sr., a top trainer and Mayweather's father. "I'm sure he thinks about it and it motivates him. Fortunately for my son, it's so far so good and I don't see anyone taking that '0' away from him either."

Mayweather vs. Mosley Fight Night Undercard Preview To Be Shown By Cable Providers & Satellite Distributors‏

...With the Mayweather vs. Mosley: Who R U Picking? mega-fight this Saturday, fans now have something extra to look forward to on fight night, as a free undercard preview will be broadcast by several satellite and cable providers, including DirecTV, Dish Network, inDEMAND and TVN. The "free-view" will feature two of the exciting non-televised undercard fights before the pay-per-view telecast begins. The special one and a half-hour show will begin at 7:00 p.m. ET / 4:00 p.m. PT.

MAYWEATHER VS MOSLEY—A POUND FOR POUND FIGHT

So, you ask……..Who is the best? Is it the Mosley who defeated Oscar De La Hoya twice and recently dismantled Alfredo Margarito or Mayweather who hasn’t been beaten in 40 professional fights? The mythical pound-for-pound title will belong to one of them Saturday night. Manny Pacquiao will not be able to claim the title with wins over Miguel Cotto and a Ricky Hatton who was previously knocked out by Mayweather before Pac-man took the Hit-Man on. This title will belong to one of Saturday night’s contestants.

I attended the last big welterweight showdown in Las Vegas in 1981 when Sugar Ray Leonard took on Thomas Hearns. That was one of the biggest fights in my adulthood until now. The welterweight division is now the ‘money’ division with even more competition as more junior welters will be moving up to the ‘cash’ division.

Golden Boy Promotions would like none other than their partner, Sugar Shane Mosley, to win this fight although Golden Boy is also doing the negotiations for Mayweather. Mayweather still remains independent and not is promotional tied down so the consensus is that Mosley is their ‘wish’ to win.

Come to think of it, I don’t know of many recent fights where Mayweather competed that he wasn’t really the opponent of sorts. It never did matter as he continued to dominate. The question is, “Will Mayweather dominate against a strong tough welterweight like Mosley or will he be in his first ‘real war’?”

Don’t kid yourself folks. This is a mega-fight. Are we going to see a super busy Mosley throwing punches at a defensive minded Mayweather giving Mosley the edge in punch output? Or will we see a Mayweather letting his hands go instead? I believe after round 4 we will see a very busy Mayweather throwing punches in bunches. Question is, “Is it going to be enough to win?”

The Mayweather/Mosley fight will be Saturday night, May 1^st, 9pm Eastern on HBO PPV. This event may be the best selling PPV in history with an estimated sale of 70 to 80 million homes at a cost of $54.95.

"Fear is an intricate part of my makeup but not fear in the way you define it. When I fought, it wasn't fear per se, it was concern. You want fear because that's what going to make you react to anticipated punches. There is a balancing act but fear is a thing you have to deal with. "

"Mayweather will try to dominate with slick punches. He may do well. Shane is going to try to test and see if Mayweather can take a shot. We have to see if he can. Shane has the ability to punch and Floyd will have to be smart and slick.

"I think Mayweather should do well with that style. I think Shane is going to try to test that and see how well he can get that shot in.

"As far as me and Ray Leonard, our fight was so huge that no one knew what the outcome would be.

"Ray said he has never danced before. I know he danced a few times when we fought.

"I believe in giving the fans what they paid to see. It wasn't about holding back or saving something for tomorrow or the next time. This is a moment. This is what you have to give them right now. You have to give your best

"Knowing his ability, I had to learn how to do things with my hands up and my hands down. I just kept making it that much easier for me.

"That was something that was meant to be. It wasn't something that we planned. The public wanted to see the match ups. You had to take on the next upcoming opponent. We weren't able to pick and choose who we wanted to fight. We didn't duck anybody even though we wanted to. That is what made our era so important."

"I think that Floyd would have been too small for us. We were big welterweights. Floyd is a small guy. I am not saying because he is small he wouldn't be able to do it, but it would have been very difficult. I think Ray knows more about that than I do."

"The confidence thing is fine with me. It is good for him to have a great deal of confidence. There shouldn't be anything Shane can do to bring him down."
