WBC SELECTS VAZQUEZ-MARQUEZ III AS ITS FIGHT OF THE YEAR

SAN DIEGO, Calif.– The World Boxing Council (WBC) has announced its year end awards. To no one’s surprise, it selected the third fight between Israel Vazquez and Rafael Marquez in March as its “Fight of the Year” for 2008.

Vazquez showed tremendous courage and pride by rallying from a fourth round knockdown to come back and floor Marquez in the twelfth round. The knockdown, which happened just as the fight was coming to an end, helped tilt the fight in Vazquez’ favor.

Vazquez successfully defended his WBC super bantamweight title by split decision.

“We’re extremely excited that the WBC recognized Vazquez-Marquez III as its fight of the year,” said Scott Woodworth, president of Sycuan Ringside Promotions, Vazquez’ co-promoter. “Israel defined what being a champion is all about. He looked beyond great on that March night.

“Both fighters are now recognized as being some of the toughest warriors in all of sports. We look forward to making a fourth fight soon.”

See you at the Fights.
Thanks for your time.

CABALLERO DESTROYS MOLITOR‏

HOLLYWOOD, FL,– Last Friday night before a sellout crowd, it only took WBA super bantamweight champion Celestino Caballero four rounds to destroy previously unbeaten hometown favorite Steve Molitor, and to add the Canadian’s IBF 122-pound championship belt to his collection. Now “Pelenchin” wants to see which of the remaining top guns in the division are willing to step into the ring with him.

“Israel Vazquez, Juan Manuel Lopez, and Rafael Marquez are the ones I want to fight,” said Caballero. “I don’t care what order they come in, but I won’t stop calling for them until they step up and prove themselves to be the warriors they say they are.”

Winner of 8 consecutive WBA sanctioned world title fights, Panama City’s Caballero did his country and its greatest fighter, Roberto Duran, proud at Casino Rama in Ontario as he took control from the opening bell and walked through the highly-regarded Molitor. It was Caballero’s sixth defense of the title he won from Somsak Sithchatchawal in Thailand in 2006, and while he gives Molitor credit for being the only champion willing to unify with him, he’s not satisfied with two of the four major belts.

“Molitor was the only one to believe in himself enough to step up and fight me, and I respect him a lot for that,” said Caballero. “What I don’t respect are fighters who hide behind their promoters and don’t give the fans the fights they deserve to see. I’ve defended my title many times, and I always come to fight, not to dance or hug. I’m making it known to Vazquez, Lopez, and Marquez that all it takes to make a fight with me is a call to my promoters.”

Caballero is now 31-2, with 22 KOs, and has won both the WBA and IBF titles in the opposing champion’s home countries. Vazquez currently holds the WBC version of the 122-pound title and Lopez holds the WBO version. Marquez, the former WBC champion, is the leading contender for both crowns. Caballero and his managerial and promotional team are open to all offers for fights with any of the aforementioned trio, and has current history has attested, is willing to travel to enemy territory to participate in these fights.

“I knew when I began working with Pelenchin, that he was special, and we would have a great super champion”, said super agent Sampson Lewkowicz, who was instrumental in helping Caballero’s career reach its current level.

“In an era where world-class fighters run away from unification bouts, Celestino is running to unify, and he should be commended for such a stance,” said Leon Margules, Executive Director of Seminole Warriors Boxing. “Then again, I’m not surprised that the other belt-holders don’t want to fight the biggest, strongest, and best 122-pounder in the world – Celestino Caballero. I welcome the representatives of Vazquez, Lopez, and Marquez, to help us unify the title, and give the fans the fights they want to see.”

Arce Targets Darchinyan, Fight with Vazquez Looks Remote

Jorge Arce, one of boxing’s most brash talkers, is no longer clamoring for a fight against WBC super bantamweight champion Israel Vazquez. Arce has now set his sights on WBC/WBA/IBF super flyweight champion Vic “The Raging Bull” Darchinyan.

Vic “The Raging Bull” Darchinyan

“Vazquez had his shot, but he waited too long to make a decision and quite frankly, I think he was scared of the match up,” Arce said. “I can only hope that Darchinyan won’t run for the hills like Vazquez did.”

Arce, who fights two divisions lower than Vazquez, has been chasing the fellow Mexican-native for quite some time. Most recently, Arce called out Vazquez after his fourth round TKO win over Isidro Garcia just two weeks ago (Saturday, Nov. 1).

“I really wanted the fight against Vazquez,” Arce said. “But this is a business and right now a fight with Darchinyan makes more sense. Let’s see how much guts the so-called ‘Raging Bull’ actually has.”

Arce has a record of 51-4-1, with 39 knockouts.

ALEX VALDEZ LEADS NEW CHARGE OF FUTURE CHAMPIONS AT ESPINOZA BOXING CLUB

LOS ANGELES- With super bantamweight Alex Valdez’s big win over Anytei Laryea in Chicago broadcast as the main event on SOLO BOXEO on June 20th, Los Angles based Espinoza Boxing Club continued it’s progress towards producing future world champions such as Junior Featherweight King Israel “EL MAGNIFICO” Vazquez and recently retired former bantamweight champion Martin "EL GALLITO" Castillo.

Said Frank Espinoza, President of Espinoza Boxing Club, “Since we started in 1991 our goal was to work with the finest prospects in boxing and build them into world champions. We’ve had success with Israel and Martin, and now it looks like Alex Valdez is on his way to a title shot within the next twelve months and we’re working with a real solid crop of kids that we’re excited about.

The newcomers are young prospects including Luis Ramos Jr., Manny “Suavecito” Roman, Jesus “Pollo” Hernandez, Carlos Molina and the recently signed Abraham Lopez. They’re all undefeated and I think we’ve got some future world champions.”

“We’ve also got Miguel Huerta who’s coming off the controversial decision loss to Javier Jauregui a few months back and he’s fighting on SOLO BOXEO on July 11th in Corpus Christi. And Julio "La Sombra" Zarate is fighting an IBF Super Bantamweight Title Eliminator later this summer.

Espinoza is commended for his managerial work with Israel Vazquez in the September 2008 issue of Ring Magazine in a special report on “The Five Best Managed Fighters.”

The 24 year old Alex Valdez has worked his record to 21-2-1 with fifteen knockouts following his win over Laryea. He is currently world ranked #2 by the WBC, #5 by the WBO, #10 by the IBF and #15 by the WBA. He is undefeated in his last seventeen bouts.

On June 27th, highly regarded lightweight prospect Luis Ramos Jr. improved to a perfect 5-0 with three knockouts with a devastating first round knockout of Noe Jimenez at the Doubletree Hotel in Ontario, California. Ramos will next battle on July 25th at the Sycuan Resort and Casino in El Cajon, California on an ESPN2 televised card.

Flyweight Manny “Sauvecito” Roman, despite being only 20 years old, has quickly moved into the contender category, winning his first ten round bout over Sergio Espinoza on April 7th. The win moved his record to 13-0-1 with five knockouts.

Los Mochis, Mexico native Jesus “Pollo” Hernandez moved to 6-0 (1KO) on April 7th as the lightweight knocked out the similarly named Jesus Hernandes in the fourth round. Hernandez will return to action on July 11th at the Quiet Cannon Country Club in Montebello, California.

Veteran super bantamweight Julio ‘LA SOMBRA” Zarate, 26-4-1 (16KO’s), riding a five bout winning streak, heads to South Africa where he will face Jeffrey Mathebula on August 29th in an IBF Title Eliminator. Zarate is currently world ranked #3 by the IBF and #6 by the WBA.

Super featherweight prospect Carlos Molina improved his record to 3-0 with a four round decision win over Odilon Rivera on June 19th in Irvine, California. Molina is also scheduled to return to the ring on July 30th at the Sycuan Resort and Casino in El Cajon, California on the ESPN2 televised card.

Recently signed to the Espinoza Boxing Club stable, super featherweight Abraham Lopez raised his record to 2-0 with a first round stoppage of veteran Tomas Bernal on May 2nd. Lopez will return on July 25th at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas on July 25th on an SOLO BOXEO televised card.

ISRAEL VAZQUEZ HOSTS KIDS BOXING CLINIC ON WEDNESDAY IN SANTA ANA‏

LOS ANGELES, CA- World Boxing Council Super Bantamweight Champion Israel Vazquez will host a youth boxing clinic at the TKO Boxing Club in Santa Ana on Wednesday, June 4th at 4pm. The club is located at 726 S. Center St. in Santa Ana, California.

Vazquez will speak to the kids about his career in boxing and demonstrate some training techniques that have made him one of the sport’s elite fighters.

“Luis Ramos is a training partner of mine, he and Hector Lopez who runs the gym asked me to come and spend some time with the kids in the boxing camps” said Vazquez.

Said manager Frank Espinoza, “Israel is taking a nice break from the rigors of training for a fight, he’s got some friends who run TKO and he was happy when they asked him to come to the club and speak to the kids.”

Vazquez is coming off a legendary three fight trilogy with Rafael Marquez that saw “MAGNIFICO” demonstrate the highest levels of skills and heart, culminating in their third bout on March 1, 2008, won by Vazquez when he scored a knock down in the final brutal round.

After losing the first bout on March 3, 2007, Vazquez won the second matchup in spectacular fashion on August 4th with a devastating sixth round knockout in a bout that was named 2007 “FIGHT OF THE YEAR” by Ring Magazine.

The trilogy has become amongst the most talked about series of bouts in the annals of the sport with each fighter winning one by stoppage and Vazquez winning the third bout by decision.

Continued Espinoza, “It’s only been three months since the grueling last fight with Marquez. Izzy’s enjoying the time off with his family. When the time is right, he’ll get back to training and prepare once again to give boxing fans his finest performance.”

In addition to holding the WBC title, Vazquez is also rated on the “Pound for Pound lists; # 6 with Ring Magazine and Yahoo Sports and #8 by ESPN.

In a final word to his fans, the classy Vaszquez said, “Please don’t forget about me, I’m just taking a little bit of time off to spend with my family. I’m looking for big fights and great things in the future and as always thanks very much for your continued support.”

For more information on Israel Vazquez, please his website at www.israel-vazquez.com and the Espinoza Boxing Club website at www.espinozaboxingclub.com.

No Holds Barred: Gary Shaw, EliteXC, Ryan Schultz, Ryan McGivern, Vazquez-Marquez Trilogy, De La Hoya-Forbes‏

No Holds Barred: Gary Shaw, EliteXC, Ryan Schultz, Ryan McGivern, Vazquez-Marquez Trilogy, De La Hoya-Forbes

http://nhbnews.podOmatic.com/entry/eg/2008-05-02T02_32_36-07_00

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman begins by commenting on what is really behind the Oscar De La Hoya-Steve Forbes fight this Saturday, May 3, and why fight fans should not miss the replay of the Israel Vazquez-Rafael Marquez trilogy on Showtime, also this Saturday, which were the best boxing matches of the past two years. We also discuss the comments by CBS chairman Sumner Redstone that it was not "socially responsible" for CBS to decide to air the May 31 EliteXC mixed martial arts show on that broadcast network.

On our show, we spoke with Gary Shaw, the president of EliteXC's Live Events division, and president and CEO of Gary Shaw Productions, his boxing promotional company.

In a lengthy discussion, we talked about the mixed martial arts and boxing events in which he is involved. We previewed the EliteXC show coming Saturday, May 31, to the Prudential Center in Newark, NJ, which will be telecast in the U.S. live on CBS beginning at 9 PM EDT, the first major mixed martial arts show on a major American broadcast network in prime time. We discussed the amazing trilogy between Israel Vazquez and Rafael Marquez, which he promoted, and the possibility of a fourth fight; the Kimbo Slice phenomenon and why he is in the EliteXC May 31 main event; the rest of the May 31 card including EliteXC middleweight champion Robbie Lawler vs. Scott Smith and the return of Gina Carano; the inclusion on the May 31 undercard of Carlton Haselrig, the only six-time NCAA college wrestling champion and a star lineman with the Pittsburgh Steelers and New York Jets; his May 17 boxing card featuring unbeaten rising stars James Kirkland, Yuriorkis Gamboa, and Alfredo Angulo, in Primm, Nevada, and on HBO; and the June 7 boxing card featuring Vernon Forrest vs. Sergio Mora and the rematch between Carlos Quintana and Paul Williams, from Mohegan Sun and on Showtime.

We also spoke with IFL lightweight champion Ryan Schultz and IFL middleweight champion Ryan McGivern about their upcoming title defenses Friday, May 16, at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn. In a dangerous fight, Schultz faces submission specialist Deividas Taurosevicius, while McGivern, in his first title defense, fights the tough Dan Miller.

WORLD 122-POUND CHAMPION ISRAEL VAZQUEZ VICTORY CELEBRATION LUNCHEON

Sycuan Ringside Promotions and Frank Espinoza’s High-Flying Boxing Club honored one of the greatest, most talented pound-for-pound and exciting fighters in the world, Israel Vazquez, at a victory celebration luncheon Wednesday for his legendary, instant-classic victories over arch rival Rafael Marquez.

Manager Frank Espinoza (left) and WBC 122-pound champion Israel Vazquez pose during Wednesday's victory celebration luncheon in Lynwood, Calif.

Vazquez, who is promoted by Sycuan and managed by Espinoza, successfully defended his world 122-crown by rallying dramatically to outpoint Marquez on Saturday, March 1, 2008, in the rubber match of an epic, memorable series.

Vazquez would reign supreme in the exhilarating trilogy, taking two out of three. Each slugfest would top the previous one in energy, excitement and goosebumps, making it one of the most critically acclaimed trilogies of all time.

Sycuan Ringside Promotions will present a similar tribute ceremony for Vazquez next Wednesday night, April 9, at the U.S. Grant Hotel in San Diego.

SCOTT WOODWORTH: “What separates the three incredibly tremendous battles between Israel Vazquez and Rafael Marquez and all the rest is this: All the other trilogies had one, maybe two great fights, but that was it.

Vazquez gets his hands raised by Woodworth (left) and Espinoza with a smiling Tucker at their side.

“The fights that Vazquez and Marquez gave us produced three spectacular fights, with each one being better than the last. I have been involved in boxing a very long time and this is the best trilogy that the sport has ever seen.

“Every night since the third fight ended I go to bed watching a different round. One night it might be round four; another night, he could be round 12 where Israel displayed his true warrior spirit.

“I’ve watched that last fight over 20 times. It was the greatest win that I have ever witnessed. I am so thankful to Israel and his family, who sacrifice so much of their time.

“We can’t honor Israel enough for his performance March 1, or in any of his fights with Marquez. The dedication he put into his training in the months before were on display and undeniable in the third fight. Israel Vazquez is truly a once in a generation type fighter.

“He became a superstar with those fights and we at Sycuan are thrilled to have the privilege to promote him.

“Boxing is a sport not always known for its trust, but Israel’s manager, Frank Espinoza, has been as trust-worthy and as great a friend and business partner as you can have.

“Both Frank and I knew that Marquez was going to be a tough fight. We also knew that sometimes great risk actually does equal great rewards, and in this case it absolutely has. Israel and Frank deserves all the accolades. We, at Sycuan, are just delighted to be part of it.’’

WILLIE TUCKER JR.: “Israel gave such a spectacular performance in such a spectacular fight; we have nothing but admiration and love for him and his wife. The finish of the fight was so exciting, so dramatic, it brought tears to my eyes. It was such a historic moment.

“In 1998, before we knew we wanted to be boxing promoters, we saw Israel fight. To think we are now and have been his promoter makes us so proud.

“It’s an honor to have Israel and Frank and their families as part of the Sycuan family.’’

FRANK ESPINOZA: “I want to thank Scott and Willie and all those at Sycuan for making this victory celebration possible.

“On March 1, 2008, Israel won the last fight of an historic trilogy. He put on an unforgettable performance that will surely land him in the Hall of Fame.

“His display of bravery and relentless passion to win made him countless fans around the one and made him one of boxing’s pound-for-pound greatest.

“On that incredible Saturday night, Israel carved his way into the history books and, in winning, made Team Vazquez and Sycuan Ringside Promotions a part of history.

Vazquez, who's exciting, memorable, epic trilogy with Rafael Marquez struck all the right chords, strikes one of his own as Sycuan's Willie Tucker Jr. (left), Espinoza and Sycuan's Scott Woodworth look on.

“Twenty years from now when they are replayed for future generations, fans will know that Israel Vazquez, Rafael Marquez and their promoters made three spectacular fights a reality.

“They’ll realize just how special a fighter Israel Vazquez was and why he’ll always be known as “El Magnifico.’

“We’re here to pay tribute to a warrior who refuses to take no for an answer, a fighter who truly is an inspiration to those who ever thought about giving up in a tough situation, a fighter who went from a longshot contender to a future legend of the sport.’’

ISRAEL VAZQUEZ: “I’m very touched to be here celebrating the historical trilogy. I feel honored to have been a part of it. It’s just now hitting me I was such a huge part of history. I have nothing but the utmost respect for Rafael Marquez and his team.

Vazquez poses with the mariachi band that performed before, during and after the ceremony..

“The legacy I hope to leave behind is one that will let the fight fans always remember me as a champion. I didn’t back down because I am a true warrior for all time.

“It was both the hard work that we put into our training that made the fights. I am thankful for my family, manager and Sycuan for believing in me.

“When I was knocked down in the fourth round in our last fight, I felt angered because I didn’t see that coming. I was in my own backyard and in front of my hometown fans and so I channeled that anger to take me through to the rest of the fight.’’
