All Access: Victor Ortiz - Full Episode
Friday, June 22, 2012
Former World Champion Victor Ortiz (29-3-2, 22 KO's) of Ventura, Calif., former NABF Champion Josesito Lopez (29-4, 17 KO's) of Riverside, Calif., former Three-Time World Champion Humberto “Zorrita” Soto and hard-hitting, top rated contender Lucas Matthysse took part in a final media workout on Wednesday at Fortune Boxing Gym in Los Angeles, just days before they do battle on SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING on Saturday, June 23 live on SHOWTIME® (9 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the West Coast) from STAPLES Center in Los Angeles, Calif.
The vacant World Boxing Council (WBC) Silver Welterweight title is on the line in the 12-round Ortiz vs. Lopez bout while Soto (59-7-2, 34 KO’s), of Los Mochis, Sinaloa, Mexico, will battle Trelew, Argentina native Matthysse (30-2, 28 KO’s) in 12-round co-featured bout for the vacant WBC Continental Americas Super Lightweight title.
“Fans can expect a great show on Saturday night. There haven't been many changes in this camp. I have always had a goal to be one of the greatest fighters of all time and that goal is still there. I have trained hard for a good fight and I am ready.
“Josesito is a hell of a fighter. I’m not taking anything away from him, but right now he is stepping into the wrong den. I will show it Saturday night.”
JOSESITO LOPEZ:
“I just recently started watching tapes. It does make a difference. I used to just let my coach watch, but it does give a clearer idea about what you have to look forward to. Training has been going great. I moved up in weight and it’s given me that much more energy. I’ve had the energy, power, and strength throughout camp to not have to slow down.
“I am at a position where there are bigger things I want to achieve, and that’s motivation right there. On Saturday it all starts. On Saturday the smarter fighter will win.”
Regarding the Canelo Alvarez vs. Ortiz announcement:
“I find it disrespectful to announce the fight ahead of time, but if anything it gives me more motivation to achieve what I want to achieve. I think (the result) is going to surprise everyone.”
HUMBERTO SOTO:
“I am a very professional fighter. I feel very good at 140 pounds. Whoever said I lost speed and power, well that’s not true. I proved with my last three fights in this division that I can handle it.”
With regards to his game plan:
“Things change in the ring. I have my game plan, but once the bell rings I am going to see what’s in front of me, but I always prepare to win. I know Matthysse has as well, so it’s going to make for a very good fight.”
LUCAS MATTHYSSE:
“I expect to win by KO. I think I was robbed against Zab Judah and Devon Alexander in the United States, so expect a KO. I don’t want it going to the judges on Saturday, so expect a good fight.
“I respect Soto because he was a three-time world champion. He comes from lighter divisions and my strength will help me win.
“I trained in Junin, Buenos Aires, for two months. I sparred with nine sparring partners. I am in the best shape of my life.”
“Ortiz vs. Lopez,” a 12-round fight for the vacant WBC Silver Welterweight Championship taking place Saturday, June 23, at STAPLES Center in Los Angeles, Calif., is promoted by Golden Boy Promotions in association with Goossen Tutor Promotions and Thompson Boxing Promotions and sponsored by Corona, DeWalt Tools andAT&T. Ortiz, Lopez, Soto, Matthysse SHOWTIME Conference Call Highlights
“Ortiz vs. Lopez,” a 12-round fight for the vacant WBC Silver Welterweight Championship taking place Saturday, June 23, at STAPLES Center in Los Angeles, Calif., is promoted by Golden Boy Promotions in association with Goossen Tutor Promotions and Thompson Boxing Promotions and sponsored by Corona, DeWalt Tools and AT&T. The co-feature will see former Three-Division World Champion Humberto “Zorrita” Soto battle Argentinean knockout artist Lucas Matthysse in a 12-round fight for the vacant WBC Continental Americas Super Lightweight title which is presented in association with Baja Boxing Promotions and Arano Box Promotions. Opening the SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING tripleheader at 9 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the West Coast) will be top rated heavyweight contender Chris Arreola facing Mike Mollo in a 10-round fight.
VICTOR ORTIZ:
“I just want to say that I don’t disrespect anyone. I’m fighting Josesito Lopez on June 23, who I’ve been training for and ignoring everyone else possible. There’s a dangerous fighter in front of me who is on the same path as I was a year ago before I fought (Andre) Berto, but the difference here is I’m too hungry to let my chance go. As far as I’m concerned I’m ready for June 23. If he wants to go to war, we’ll go to war. If he wants to box, then we’ll box. It doesn’t really matter. I’m there to take what is rightfully mine. At the end of the day, I know Josesito is ready to go and so am I, so that makes two of us.”
Did you have to adjust much in your training when it was announced you would be fighting Lopez and not Berto?
“Lopez is a good fighter. He and Berto go hand-in-hand. They’re both great fighters. I can’t think lightly of either of them.”
Is there any pressure on you going back to STAPLES Center, the site of your loss to Marcos Maidana?
“No, not at all. Right now the main focus is on Josesito Lopez because he’s no walk in the park. As far as Maidana goes, he owes me a thank you or a rematch because I gave him his name.”
JOSESITO LOPEZ:
“I’m really excited about this fight. I’ve been training really hard.’’
Did you think you won your last fight against Jessie Vargas?
“I do think I won that fight and nine out of 10 people who saw it thought I won. Unfortunately, the judges didn’t’ see it that way, but hey, that’s the way it goes. Our job as fighters is just to bring everything we can and hope for the best and hope that they see it the correct way.
“My only motivation right now is just June 23 and Victor Ortiz. I don’t even think one hour past June 23. That’s the only thing that drives me right now. I don’t care about any other dates or times right now. There’s nothing else that matters to me.”
HUMBERTO SOTO:
“There is no doubt Lucas is a strong opponent and a strong fighter. He comes forward and always looks for a fight. The difference in this fight is the experience. I have a lot of experience, and that’s what’s going to lead me to victory.
“Matthysse is a good fighter. He’s going to stay in there and he’s a smart fighter. We’re going to go toe-to-toe.”
LUCAS MATTHYSSE:
“We are here in Argentina finishing preparations and putting the final touches on. We are just very excited, happy and ready to go.”
Do you think Soto will stand and fight in front of you instead of backing up as you perceived was the case in your only losses to southpaws Zab Judah and Devon Alexander?
“Yes, those were both very difficult fights to have to adjust to them and change the way I fight. I know I won both those fights. Deep in my heart, I know it. It did hurt me, but we’ve got to come back stronger and I know we are ready for bigger and better things. With Humberto, we all know he’s going to come to fight. He wants to come to battle and that makes me very happy because we are ready to give him a war.”

VICTOR ORTIZ vs. ANDRE BERTO II PRESS CONFERENCE HIGHLIGHTS
Former World Champions Victor Ortiz and Andre Berto held a press conference on Monday in Los Angeles to formally announce their upcoming rematch of the 2011 “Fight of the Year” on Saturday, June 23, live on SHOWTIME (10 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the West Coast), from STAPLES Center in Los Angeles, Calif.
Ortiz (29-3-2, 22 KO’s), of Ventura, Calif., and Berto (28-1, 22 KO’s), of Winter Haven, Fla., will square off more than one year after their classic slugfest was named 2011 “Fight of the Year” (USA Today, Ring Magazine) for the vacant WBC Silver Welterweight Championship. The eagerly awaited 12-round fight, which was originally scheduled for February but was postponed when Berto suffered an arm injury in late January, is a rematch of a fiercely contested, multiple-knockdown affair on April 16, 2011 that Ortiz won by a unanimous decision while capturing Berto’s WBC 147-pound title.
Ortiz went on to lose the WBC title in his next fight to pound-for-pound champ Floyd Mayweather via a controversial knockout while Berto won the IBF Welterweight title in his next fight, but then relinquished it with hopes of avenging the only loss of his career against Ortiz.
In the June 23 co-feature, Mexican legend and former Three Division World Champion Humberto Soto (54-7-1, 24 KOs), of Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico, will face Argentinean knockout artist Lucas Matthysse (30-2, 28 KOs) in a 12-round super lightweight bout.
"Ortiz vs. Berto II: The Rematch," is the highly anticipated 12-round welterweight rematch of USA Today and Ring Magazine's 2011 Fight of the Year between former World Champions "Vicious" Victor Ortiz and Andre Berto for the vacant WBC Silver Welterweight Championship which will take place Saturday, June 23 at at STAPLES Center in Los Angeles, Calif. The event is promoted by Golden Boy Promotions and DiBella Entertainment and sponsored by Corona, DeWalt Tools and AT&T. The co-feature will see former Three-Division World Champion Humberto "Zorrita" Sotobattle Argentinean knockout artist Lucas Matthysse in a 12-round super lightweight fight presented in association with Baja Boxing Promotions and Arano Box Promotions. The double-header will be telecast live on SHOWTIME Championship Boxing at 10 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the West Coast).
Here’s what the participants had to say on Monday.
VICTOR ORTIZ
“I’m counted out 100 percent of the time, but that’s my comfort zone.
“He’s a great fighter, but I’m here to win. It doesn’t matter that this is in my backyard. As long as there is a ring and gloves, I’m comfortable.
“I always fight with my back against the wall. I like being counted out. It makes me hungry.
“I told him I’m going to beat you again and he told me I got lucky. He tried to bring Floyd in, but I told him to keep this between me and him. Floyd doesn’t have anything to do with us. I beat him (Berto) last time and I’ll beat him again.
“The slugfests keep boxing alive. It keeps fans coming back and I expect another one in June.
“I didn’t want to wait, but the postponement gave me time to prepare a little bit more.”
ANDRE BERTO
“I didn’t have to take this fight. I vacated the title to make this happen again.
“This fight is for the fans. The last one was tremendous and this one is going to be even better.
“We’re doing it in Kobe’s (Bryant) house, so come out for a great fight. I know all the stars will come out for it
“I was disappointed with the injury. It was unfortunate, but I’m glad we made the fight happen. Now I’m back to avenge that loss.
“I just need to be smarter and there are a few things I’ll do differently this time.
“I came back from the Ortiz fight hungry, got a world title and gave it up to beat Ortiz. This is the most important fight of my career.
“I feel a lot better. We’re healed and ready to roll.”
HUMBERTO SOTO
“I’m happy to be fighting in Los Angeles. It feels like I’m fighting at home. I expect a very difficult fight. I want to fight like a true Mexican warrior.
“I’m hoping it can be for a world title. I’m going to be in top shape and ready for a war.”
OSCAR DE LA HOYA, President of Golden Boy Promotions:
“We expect a sellout on June 23. The first fight was a tremendous success and we expect the same for the rematch. The last one was the “Fight of the Year” and I don’t think this one will be any different. It will be an explosive fight once again. Will it be repeat or revenge?
“The co-main event will also be great. It has all the ingredients to be a classic. The co-main event could be a main event anywhere.
“We’re also excited that SHOWTIME will also showcase the fighters in FIGHT CAMP 360 with three episodes leading up to the fight.”
RON RIZZO, VP of Operations of DiBella Entertainment
“These guys belong in a venue like this and it’s going to be an amazing event.
“Andre is one of the most dedicated guys I’ve seen in any sport. He’s looking to correct a wrong from last April and I believe he’s going to do it.”

Victor Ortiz-Andre Berto II Rescheduled For June 30
“However, I would suggest that Robert not wait around for Victor but restart his career that was interrupted by a training injury that required surgery. If the opportunity arises in the future to fight Guerrero, we would be happy to commence discussions. But for now, Victor Ortiz’ focus, as it has been for the past three months, is to fight and defeat Andre Berto again in a match that boxing fans the world over want to see.”

"STAR POWER: Mayweather vs. Ortiz" Post-Fight Quotes; FLOYD MAYWEATHER, New WBC Welterweight World Champion
(All photos by; Keisha Morrisey)
"This was another unbelievable performance. A lot of people want to know what happened. There were a couple head butts. Sh*t happens in the sport of boxing.
"Protect yourself at all times.
"You wanted to see a knockout and that is what I gave you.
"When victor Ortiz was nine years old, I was dominating the sport of boxing.
"This was an unbelievable training camp. This camp was blood sweat and tears. Being up all night. Running seven or eight miles. I deserved it.
"I was always told to protect yourself at all times. My mouth was split open. I said keep it clean. Once you touch gloves, it is go time.
"We came together to fight. It is fight time. You want to do me dirty and then two minutes later you want to be my friend? This is the hurting business.
"Without the fourth round, he was going to get knocked out anyway. I was fighting stronger. I was keeping my composure and sticking to the game plan.
"We were breaking him down. I listened to what my corner said.
"Floyd Mayweather isn't ducking and dodging anybody. If he [Ortiz] wants it, he can have it [a rematch].
"If he [Ortiz] felt like it was a fluke and it didn't get done right the first time, I would do it again.
"He was slowly breaking down as each round went. He was going to go anyway.
"Once you put me in that squared circle, I am home.
"I am never going to get a fair shake, but whoever you put in front of me; they can't beat me.
"I take my hat off to Victor Ortiz. He is still a champion in my eyes. Tough guy tough opponent, but I was the better man.
"I said I was going to go straight to him and that is what I did.
"I just say what goes around, comes around. Things happen in this sport and like I said, they say protect yourself at all times.
"Pacquiao is famous because he is attached to my name. When they say Pacquiao, they say that's the guy they are trying to get to fight Floyd Mayweather. When they say Floyd Mayweather - they say the greatest ever.
"How can you [Pacquiao] offer me anything? I do the offering. He has to get his business in order. When he fights, he gives up 30 percent of his check, I get 100 percent."
VICTOR ORTIZ, Former WBC Welterweight World Champion
"I hope you enjoyed this night of boxing. I am blessed to be in this position."
"I fouled Floyd, I apologized in the ring and apologized after the fight as well.
"I would really like the rematch.
"I thought the ref called a break and I am pretty sure he did and then I was like 'whoa, whoa,' and then I woke up after.
"You learn quite a bit from each fight individually, but I am still not convinced that he [Mayweather] is the greatest. I was doing just fine and then there was a little slip up.
"He put his hand up. I thought it was sportsmanship-like.
"I was warming up. It was the fourth round and that is just the beginning of a 12 round fight.
"Stuff happens. I got caught up. We were going for it.
"I think Berto was faster, but his [Mayweather's] speed was decent.
"He landed a good one. It was a good shot.
"I started it, but I got my point taken away.
"I was letting him come in because he wasn't hurting me at all. He doesn't have a stiff right.
"I am fine. I will be champion again. Within the next six months, I will be champion again.
"Every fight has its game plan. I was listening to the corner. Whatever they said, I executed little by little.
"I was looking at Joe. I thought he said 'break,' and BOOM - I guess it was time for bed.
"Floyd is an elusive fighter. He comes in very strong the first few rounds and keeps that same momentum throughout the fights.
"In this case he connected with what I believe was a foul."
LEONARD ELLERBE, CEO of Mayweather Promotions
"We want to thank everyone for coming out tonight. It was a great exciting fight. I want to thank victor Ortiz tonight for putting a tremendous performance. Money Mayweather comes out and never lets you down."
DANNY GARCIA, Ortiz's Trainer
"The fight finished with a good moment that Mayweather had. He took advantage of a situation where Victor made a mistake. I believe Victor made a mistake as a result of Joe Cortez's instructions. Joe Cortez was on the right side of Victor and Victor looked at Joe Cortez. That is when Floyd took advantage.
"We would like a rematch and we would do everything to beat Floyd.
"Floyd was hitting him with some good right hands, but Victor was taking them.
"With those types of punches, anyone can be knocked out."
ROLANDO ARELLANO, Ortiz's Manager
"We will have to critically review the tape and only then would we make some sort of contention.
"What Victor did was wrong. We apologized for it and got a point deducted. There is nothing we can do to turn back the clock. We can only move forward."
