"Finally" Press Conference Quotes
"Finally" Press Conference Quotes
Holly Holm: “They mentioned my draw and loss, but I’m glad I tasted defeat because I know that I won’t taste it again. I’m nervous as all heck, but that’s normal, and it means I’m focused. I can’t wait for Friday to be over with.”
Mary Jo Sanders: “The women on this card defy gender. There is no skill difference between us and the men. I’ve been training…can’t even describe it. I’ve been doing crazy things —jumping over fences and running hills, using a breathing apparatus to restrict breathing . . . sparring 30, 40 rounds with southpaw Damian Fuller. I’ve been training for this fight like I’ve never trained for anything else.”
Chevelle Hallback: “This is history in the making. I’m overwhelmed to be part of this.”
Jeannie Garside: “I’m quite honored to fight Chevelle. ‘Finally’ has a lot of meaning for me. The day has come for me, finally.”
Wendy Rodriguez: “We’ll steal the show. Thank you, Hollie, for giving me a second chance to fight you.”
Hollie Dunaway: “Wendy and I will steal the show. We know each other pretty well from when we fought over a year ago.”
(Note: Dunaway’s camp will throw and extra $1,000 into the pot if there is a winner by knockout—either fighter)
Eileen Olszewski: “It took three years for me to get my pro debut. During that time, I watched these fighters and wished I could be like them. It just seems so unreal to be here now. I’ve trained really hard, but I’m ready to get the belt.”
Carino Moreno: “This is going to be history in the making, this card. This is business and tomorrow, I’m going to take care of business.”

ALEX VALDEZ VS. ANYETEI LARYEA HEADLINES NEXT FRIDAY NIGHT IN CHICAGO
CHICAGO, IL,- World ranked bantamweight contender Alex Valdez returns to Chicago next Friday night, June 20th to face Ghana-based veteran spoiler Anyetei Laryea in the ten round main event at FEARLESS, an outstanding evening of World Class Professional Boxing presented by Dominic Pesoli’s 8 Count Productions, HOME OF THE BEST IN CHICAGO BOXING.
Tickets for FEARLESS are on sale now through Ticketmaster (www.ticketmaster) and the 8 Count Production offices at 312-226-5800. The Aragon Ballroom is located at 1106 W. Lawrence Ave. Doors for this event will open at 5:30pm with the first bell at 6:30pm.
The 24 year old Valdez, 20-2-1 (15KO’s), a native of Ciudad Obregon, Sonora, Mexico is riding a sixteen bout undefeated streak which includes a seventh round stoppage of Samuel Lopez in Chicago on December 1, 2006 at Cicero Stadium.
Most recently Valdez won the NABF bantamweight title with a sixth round knockout of Heriberto Ruiz on May 5, 2007 in Tijuana, Mexico. In his last bout, he won a unanimous decision over Mexican veteran Oscar Andrade on March 1, 2008 at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California on the undercard of the third bout in the epic Israel Vazquez/Rafael Marquez trilogy.
Valdez’s four year professional career also includes a win over former world champion Mauricio Pastrana two years ago. He is currently ranked # 4 by the WBC, #7 by the WBO, # 10 by the IBF and # 15 by WBA.
Accra, Ghana native Laryea brings a record of 17-4 with eight knockouts into the battle with Valdez. The quick and colorful 31 year old had won four in a row prior to dropping a close decision to former world champion Ivan Hernandez on May 15th in Irvine, California. Prior to that Laryea had won the British Commonwealth Super Bantamweight title by stopping highly regarded prospect Isaac Ward in the fourth round on October 12, 2007.
Laryea has also gone the distance with former world champion title challengers Nicky Cook (L-UD12) and Alex Baba (W-UD12).
Said Pesoli, “Valdez really won over the Chicago fight fans with his stoppage of Lopez at the end of 2006. He’s got great skills and very well could be a future champion. Laryea is a very tough veteran from Accra, Ghana, the same town as the legendary champion Azumah Nelson, and he's faced world class competition.
In the co-main event, Salinas, California super bantamweight prospect Alejandro Perez, 12-0-1 (7KO’s) squares off against Mexico City’s Adolfo Landeros, 17-10-1 (8KO’s) in a scheduled eight rounder.

On the outstanding under card, undefeated Chicago fast rising prospect Ivan Popoca, 6-0-1 (5KO’s) will face Khristian Geraci, 3-2-1 (2KO’s) in a six round welterweight bout. Also on the undercard, Michigan native Frederico Flores Jr. 4-2 (2KO’s) faces Chicagoan Gustavo Palacios, 2-3 (1KO’s) over four rounds.
Rounding out the card is a four round junior lightweight battle between Chicago native Juan Bailon, 2-0 (1KO) and Mexico’s Gerardo Alarcon, 0-1.
Along with Dominic Pesoli's 8 Count Productions and Bob Arum’s Top Rank Incorporated, FLAWLESS is presented by TCF Bank, Tecate Beer and AeroMexico, Mexico’s premier airline travel headquarters. The SOLO BOXEO TECATE broadcast will be viewed in 42 US markets and 70 foreign countries.

"Finally" PPV;"The Women Come to New Mexico.....Looking for History" By Bernie McCoy
"The Women Come to New Mexico.....Looking for History"
By Bernie McCoy
This is the age of hyperbole, exaggeration has become the norm. One of the adjectives orally chucked about, with abandon, today, is "historic." It is often applied to an event that, at the time it occurs, seems to have secured it's place in the pantheon of never-to-be-forgotten occurrences. Remember the score of the last Super Bowl?.....neither do I and I live in the town of the winning team. That was the NY Giants in case you've forgotten. For a week, after the final gun, it was all anyone, and I mean anyone, talked about in New York. And the word "historic" led the league of descriptive adjectives. Then about a month later, nothing. The reason was fairly predictable, it was a good game, a game decided in the final seconds, but it wasn't, by any known definition, a game that altered the course of the NFL; there'll be another Super Bowl next February, count on it. And that, at least to me, is the proper qualification for something being termed historic: an event that has the power to alter the course of a given enterprise, or, in this case, a sport. That's why I have only a slight bit of reluctance applying the word historic to this Friday's all-female fight card at the Isleta Casino and Resort in Albuquerque, NM; the show, consisting of four IFBA title fights, actually might have the potential to change the direction of Women's boxing.
The all-female boxing card has that potential simply because the card has as it's main event the "big fight" in the sport of Women's boxing. Remember Christy Martin/Lucia Rijker? That was the "big fight" about a decade ago; a lot of talk, a couple of confrontations between the fighters, even a false start with an actual date and time for the bout in Los Angeles. What happened? Nothing. Laila Ali and Ann Wolfe then donned the "big fight" mantle and the hoopla began anew. Ali/Wolfe never passed the "yadda, yadda, yadda" stage, and the clamor for the bout never got to the Martin/Rijker level because, in truth, most boxing fans realized that the level of boxing skill of an Ali/Wolfe bout probably would have come up well short of Martin/Rijker. On Friday, however, Women's boxing finally gets that "big fight." It's set for Albuquerque as Holly Holm and Mary Jo Sanders go ten rounds for Holm's IFBA junior middleweight title.
Let's ignore for the moment the rhetoric about "pound/pound supremacy" in the sport and concentrate on the fact that two very good female boxers, both unbeaten, both with excellent ring skills are going to come together for ten rounds in what should be a quality boxing match. Are Holly Holm and Mary Jo Sanders the two best female fighters in the sport today? Probably not, but they certainly make the front row of any group photo. And the fact that two of the best fighters in the sport are getting in the ring is cause enough for celebration within the boxing community, simply because it is, in today's Women's boxing environment, such a rarity. In addition, on Friday in New Mexico, there are three other title fights, all similarly showcasing quality fighters, fighting each other, each bout a possible candidate for "fight of the night" honors.
Wendy Rodriguez (18-3-3) and Hollie Dunaway (21-6) will be fighting for the vacant IFBA mini flyweight title and vacant IBA Strawweight title in a rematch of an eight round UD that Dunaway won in March 2007. The following July, Rodriguez dropped a very close, (some termed it "disputed") decision to Regina Halmich in Germany (where else?). A review of the respective records of Rodriguez and Dunaway indicates that both fighters have been in with the top boxers in the flyweight division, including Halmich and Corina Moreno. Dunaway appears to have the edge in power, with almost half her wins (10/21) coming by way of a stoppage. Both fighters possess good ring movement, portending a fast paced ten rounds, a classic boxer/puncher match-up.
Carina Moreno (17-1) and Eileen Olszewski (5-0-1) will go ten rounds for the vacant IFBA junior flyweight title. Morneo, with three times as many professional bouts as Olszewski, has a professional experience edge, but both fighters have extensive amateur backgrounds and neither one lacks familiarity with the inside of a boxing ring. In fact Olszewski's last two bouts, a ten round draw with then WBC flyweight champion Stefania Bianchini (September 2007) and a dominating ten round win over Elena Reid (February 2008) are proof positive that she has more than enough ring experience to take on the best in the flyweight division. And with Moreno as an opponent, Olszewski is getting just that, one of the best in the weight class. Olszewski is a straight up, come-forward fighter, while Moreno possesses the smooth movement befitting the veteran fighter she is. This seems likely to be another high quality ten rounds of boxing.
In what could be the action fight of the night, Chevelle Hallback (26-5-2) and Jeannine Garside (7-0-1) come together for ten rounds in a quest for the vacant IFBA lightweight crown. This is quite simply a match-up of two pressure fighters, both of whom have only one gear, forward. Hallback and Garside are two of the biggest punchers in the lightweight division; Garside dismantling the tough veteran Laura Serrano in November 2006, scoring two knockdowns on the way to a one-sided win over the veteran fighter. Hallback has eleven stoppages over her eleven year career. This one could end early or turn into ten rounds of nonstop bell-to-bell action.
The showcase of the evening is the hometown favorite, Holly Holm, defending her title against the first major, unbeaten fighter, Mary Jo Sanders, Holm has ever faced. Holm's primary edge as a fighter is her remarkable conditioning; she can go ten rounds at a fast pace, a quality that Sanders has not seen in any of her 25 wins. Sanders will try to counter the Holm speed with an almost flawless boxing style that she has honed over her five years as a professional fighter. Cutting off the ring will be Sanders' primary goal, but it's been tried before, notably by the likes of Christy Martin (who has cut off her share of rings in a long career), without great success. Sanders may also try to turn the bout into a contest of boxing skill, a technique that seemed to have some success, for Belinda Laracuente, in Holm's last bout in February. Neither fighter has big punching power but both are skilled ring practitioners and the ten rounds should prove to be a worthy main event cap for the night.
This fight card in New Mexico, is, as the hype has it, "the biggest night, ever," for the sport of Women's boxing. Not only is the sport getting, at last, it's "big fight," Holm/Sanders, but that bout is supported by three terrific fights featuring six of the highly skilled boxers in the sport. The card is receiving major PPV coverage. The card is also going to be supported, from a marketing standpoint, by a televised lead-in in the form of a very good all-female boxing card on Fox Sports Network the previous night from Mohegan Sun Casino in Connecticut. With four title fights of this quality, the night in New Mexico will be memorable, but memorable is probably not enough, given the current state of the sport of Women's boxing. The sport needs "historic" and that's never easy. But with Holly Holm, Mary Jo Sanders, Chevelle Hallback, Jeannine Garside, Carina Moreno, Eileen Olszewski, Holly Dunaway and Wendy Rodriguez, the sport is taking it's best shot. Let's hope it makes history.

Guida steps up as injury sidelines Monson
Jason Guida has managed to cram an entire mixed martial arts career into less than five years.
Known as a hard-nosed competitor who never turned down a fight, Guida was a natural replacement when a broken hand forced Jeff Monson to withdraw from the main event of this Saturday's Adrenaline MMA show near Chicago.
"Say what you will about Guida, but when you need somebody to jump in on short notice and fight anybody... he's the guy," said Adrenaline CEO Monte Cox. "I mean, we all know he's crazy... but he also comes to fight and you never have to worry about him laying down for anybody. I know this will be a very good main event."
A native of the Chicago area, Guida's fighting resume includes almost 40 professional fights all over the world... Russia, Costa Rica, Mexico, Poland. The guy simply loves the competition. And, the tougher the better.
On Saturday at the Sears Centre Arena in Hoffman Estates, Ill., Guida (23-16) will face Chicago police officer Mike Russow (9-1) in the main event of the 14-fight show. The main fights will be televised live on HDNet, beginning at 9:30 p.m. (EST).
"I feel bad for Monson because he really wanted this fight," Cox said. "But his broken hand wasn't healing quick enough and you can't fight at this level with that kind of injury. I'm just fortunate that we had such a quality replacement right in Chicago."
Guida is the older brother of UFC lightweight standout Clay Guida, who will be in the corner.

IFL Cancels August 15 Event
INTERNATIONAL FIGHT LEAGUE DECIDES AGAINST AUGUST 15 EVENT IN NEW JERSEY Organization Working On Financial Situation NEW YORK, June 10, 2008: The International Fight League (OTC.BB: IFLI ) today announced that it has canceled its scheduled August 15 event at the Izod Center in East Rutherford, New Jersey, in light of the company's current financial condition. Several IFL athletes will compete on the Adrenaline MMA card in Chicago on June 14, and announcements with other promoters working with IFL athletes are expected in the near future. The IFL will also continue to downsize its staff to reduce costs. International Fight League™ (IFL) has its headquarters in New York. For more information about IFL, please see: www.ifl.tv. SERGIO MARTINEZ SENSATIONAL ONCE AGAIN AND READY TO TAKE OVER 154-lb. DIVISION
NEW YORK– There is a new player ready to take over the 154 lb. division and his name is Sergio “Maravilla” Martinez (43-1-1, 23 KO’s). The DBE Super Welterweight looked outstanding Saturday night knocking out a highly motivated, well prepared Archack TerMeliksetian (16-7, 13 KO’s), in the 7th round of a scheduled 10 round contest. Sergio displayed fast combinations, slick footwork, great defense, an abundance of power and a clear will to win.
The Argentinean’s win Saturday night came on the undercard of the Vernon Forrest-Sergio Mora WBC Super Welterweight Title fight where Mora, the challenger, upset Forrest to win the belt. Ironically, with the win, Martinez is now the WBC #1 contender and the mandatory challenger for Sergio Mora’s WBC Super Welterweight Title.
“Sergio Martinez was by far the most impressive fighter on the card Saturday night at Mohegan Sun,” said Lou DiBella, president of DiBella Entertainment. “I am so excited for what lies ahead for Sergio. He has great boxing tools and is an extremely fun fighter to watch. He is an intelligent person who will be very marketable to the networks. He now has a great opportunity as the #1 Contender for the WBC belt as it will be ‘Sergio vs. Sergio’ and I know Martinez has the ability and passion to win it.”

GIOVANNI LORENZO - RAUL MARQUEZ, IBF Middleweight Mandatory Eliminator Hard Rock Live in Hollywood FL, SHOWTIME TO BROADCAST LIVE
GIOVANNI LORENZO
MIDDLEWEIGHT MELEE: The Hard Rock Live in Hollywood, FL will serve as the site for a Showtime World Championship Boxing middleweight doubleheader. The 12 round non-title main event bout will feature a rematch between Edison Miranda (30-2, 26 KO’s) and undefeated IBF middleweight champion Arthur Abraham (26-0, 21 KO’s). In the co-feature undefeated IBF #4 ranked contender Giovanni Lorenzo (26-0, 18 KO’s) challenges IBF #13 ranked contender and former world champion Raul Marquez (40-3-1, 29 KO’s) in a 12 round IBF Mandatory Eliminator bout. IBF champion Abraham is mandated to fight the winner of Lorenzo-Marquez in his next bout. SHOWTIME’s June 21broadcast will begin at 9pm ET / PT. Tickets, priced at $202, $152, $102, and $52 are now on sale and may be purchased at the Hard Rock Live Box Office or TicketMaster.com.
GIOVANNI LORENZO: TIME TO STEP UP - Undefeated middleweight contender Giovanni Lorenzo has been waiting for this opportunity. He has hungered for the chance to showcase his talents and prove to the world that he is ready to battle for a world title. The only person standing in his way is Raul Marquez:
On Marquez’s abilities: “Marquez has many strengths, as do most former world champions. He is durable, he’s been active, and he can punch. He has been in with the best in the world. Also, he is a southpaw and I have never faced a southpaw before. He works every minute of every round and bangs to the body hard. He's tenacious, focused, but also very relaxed. He is a tough out for anyone. That is why so many fighters have avoided him. But so far no one has been able to defeat me. He has been defeated and he knows how to lose. That will be the big difference in the fight.”
On Marquez’s age and stamina: “Marquez has been the distance [10 rounds or more] numerous times and the most I have gone is 8 rounds, so I don’t expect any advantages if the fight going longer. I have been preparing for the old Marquez and I expect a hard physical fight from start to finish. I know that although he has been stopped he has never been counted out, so I want to be the first man to ever do that. If I can, it will be a huge accomplishment.”
On Pavlik-Lockett: “I think Pavlik could get beat. He is an overrated fighter
who wants to fight bums who nobody gives a damn about. But if HBO
wants to keep paying him the amount of money he is asking to fight these
bums, then they deserve the poor ratings that they have been getting.
Pavlik is never going to fight me. His management already confirmed this
. . . which is why we are moving on and planning to face Abraham in our
next fight.”
RAUL MARQUEZ: FINAL SHOT? Former world champion Raul Marquez recognizes that this IBF eliminator bout on June 21 against Lorenzo may be his final opportunity to earn a world title shot. Since losing to Jermain Taylor in June 2004, the 16-year veteran and 1992 Silver Medalist has rattled off a 5-0-1 record. With the help of his trainer/father, Arturo Marquez, Raul plans to knock off Lorenzo and then challenge IBF champion Arthur Abraham . . . or any other world middleweight champion willing to fight him.
On Lorenzo’s opposition: “Lorenzo’s young and hungry and this is a big opportunity for him. But the guy’s never been tested. The biggest name on his resume is Archak [Ter-Meliksetian]. He’s been fighting nothing but journeymen.”
On Lorenzo’s skills: “He’s powerful and strong. When you knock out 18 guys you have some power no matter who the opponent is. But I don’t think he is a full-blown middleweight and a lot of the guys he’s fought were welterweights and jr. middleweights. He hasn’t been in with a true middleweight. I’ve watched tape of him and I think he’s an average guy, an average fighter. Nothing impressive. I don’t compare him with the talent of guys like Jermain Taylor and Fernando Vargas when I fought them. They had better resumes.”
Marquez is training for the bout in Houston, and other than suffering through the heat and the humidity he is enjoying training like never before: “Since I lost to Taylor I’ve had six fights. The training is hard and you really have to want it. It’s hard at any age, but it gets even harder at 36. But I’m different now. I’m older, wiser, and more mature. I love boxing more now than ever. I appreciate it more. I train happy.”

“For the second consecutive show, The Blue Horizon put on a great night of boxing” said www.gofightlive.tv president Jerry Palmer. “Each fight presented so much action and the only thing I can say about the three main events is that they are Cant-Miss fights. All the fights were competitive and there is plenty of world class action.”

Talkin Boxing show tonight; LIVE – THIS WEDNESDAY STARTING AT 6PM EST THE TALKIN BOXING WITH BILLY C SHOW
THIS WEEK’S SHOW – Preview to “Finally” from New Mexico
Head to Head – Holly Holm and Mary Jo Sanders
Heavy Weight Contender Juan Carlos Gomez
Undefeated Heavyweight prospect Bowie Tupou
The "Blast From the Past" segment will feature JAMES JEFFRIES:
James Jackson Jeffries (Jim) was a great fighter at the turn of the century, when boxing styles and techniques were a bit cruder than today but fighters were more rugged and possessed greater spunk and stamina.
He was a big, strong heavyweight who struck sledge-hammer blows with each fist, similar to Rocky Marciano and George Foreman of more recent years. Jeffries often fought from a crouch and sprang forward with dangerous punches.
Fighting in a time when hard work and manual labor was at its peak, Jeffries was always in magnificent physical condition. He was rugged beyond belief, possessed a granite chin, and absorbed punishment without blinking. In addition, he was a patient fighter who seemed to possess unlimited endurance.
Jeffries won the Heavyweight Championship in only his thirteenth fight
He scored the quickest knockout in Heavyweight Championship history - 55 seconds
He was never defeated during his prime
He was never knocked down during his prime
He offered to fight his top challengers - Bob Fitzsimmons, Jim Corbett, and Tom Sharkey - all on the same night. They refused.

DAVID DIAZ THROWS OUT FIRST PITCH AT CHICAGO CUBS GAME THIS TUESDAY NIGHT
CHICAGO, IL- The Chicago Cubs, owners of the best record in Major League Baseball, will welcome World Boxing Council Lightweight Champion David Diaz to throw out the pitch this Tuesday night, June 10th, prior to the opening game of their three game home series against the Atlanta Braves. Diaz will take to the mound approximately 15 minutes prior to the 7:05pm local start.
Said Diaz, "This truly is an honor. Being Chicago born and raised on the North Side, the Cubs became my favorite team as a young boy. I've loved going to Cubs games since I was a kid. When they called I was thrilled to have them invite me and I'm very excited to the head to mound on Tuesday night to throw out the first pitch."
Continued Diaz, "The team has been very supportive of my career and I'm anxious to share my best wishes with them for the rest of this season."
Diaz is currently training in Chicago for his world title defense against THE MEXICUTIONER set for Saturday, June 28th at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada
Diaz regularly updates his blog with the Chicago Sun-Times with more information on the fight and his training. The blog can be viewed at www.sun-times/com/sports/boxing.
Additional information can also be viewed at his website www.diazboxing.com and at www.toprank.com
Promoted by Top Rank, in association with MP Promotions, Pacquiao vs. Diaz will take place Saturday, June 28th, at Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino, Las Vegas, Nevada. The 12-round lightweight championship bout will be produced and distributed live by HBO Pay-Per-View, beginning at 9 P.M. ET /6 P.M. PT.
Remaining tickets for Pacquiao vs.Diaz, priced at $600, $400, $300, $200 and $100, can be purchased at the Mandalay Bay box office and at all Las Vegas Ticketmaster locations (select Smith’s Food and Drug Centers, Macy’s West at the Fashion Show Mall, and Ritmo Latino). Ticket sales are limited to eight (8) per person. To charge by phone with a major credit card, call Ticketmaster at (702) 474-4000 or Mandalay Bay (702) 632-7580. Tickets are also available for purchase at www.mandalaybay.com or www.ticketmaster.com
“This will be my hardest-fought battle,” said Pacquiao. “It’s been over three years since I have changed weight divisions and I will be doing it against the lightweight division’s world champion. I saw how he took the fight to Erik Morales in his last title defense and I’m expecting to see the same firepower out of him when we meet. But this is my drive for five. Five world titles in five different weight classes and I will not be denied. I am fighting for history, for destiny and for my people of the Philippines.”
"Manny Pacquiao has beaten many great fighters, especially Mexicans like Morales, Barrera, Marquez, Larios and Solis. That's why they call him “The Mexicutioner,” said Diaz. “I will shock the world and beat Pacquiao at his own game, power for power. He’s a great champion but he’s fighting in my division – lightweight. I have worked too hard for this world title and I will not give it up to him."
“Two world champions, at the top of their game, matching each other in speed, power, stamina and courage is a recipe for a great fight,” said Hall of Fame promoter Bob Arum. “Manny has never felt the power thrown at this weight class just as Diaz has never gone toe-to-toe with such a human dynamo. But Manny possesses an inner strength from his fellow countrymen the likes I have never seen as a promoter with over 40 years of experience. Manny is more than a national treasure to the Philippines, he is the very symbol of its national pride. He doesn’t fight for himself, he fights for his people. It’s a responsibility that no other athlete could, or attempt to, accomplish.”
“Boxing fans recognize that in Pacquiao vs. Diaz you have one of the sport’s best fighters and biggest attractions moving up in weight to challenge a bigger, stronger champion,” said HBOPPV’s Mark Taffet. “It’s a very intriguing proposition and we look forward to the event."
Dubbed "Republica Enemy No. 1," Pacquiao (46-3-2, 34 KOs), from General Santos City, Philippines, has blitzed through the best fighters Mexico has had to offer since 2003 including Erik Morales (KO 3, TKO 10), Marco Antonio Barrera (TKO 11, W 12), Juan Manuel Marquez (W 12, D 12), Oscar Larios (W 12), Emanuel Lucero (TKO 3), Hector Velazquez (TKO 6) and Jorge Solis (KO 8). Pacquiao was named 2006 Fighter of the Year by the Boxing Writers Association of America and The Ring magazine for his two spectacular knockout victories of Mexican icon and three-division champion Morales, as well as his dominating 12-round unanimous decision over former world champion Larios. The hard-hitting southpaw has won 22 of his last 23 bouts including 2007 victories over Barrera and Solis. Pacquiao’s 12-round split decision victory over Marquez earlier this year not only avenged a disputed draw from their 2004 battle, it also made Pacman a four-division world champion.
Diaz (34-1-1, 17 KOs), from Chicago, will be making the second defense of his title. He successfully defended it against the three-division world champion Morales last summer winning a hard-fought unanimous decision over the future Hall of Famer. Although behind on the scorecards early, Diaz remained cool and rallied before the raucous hometown Chicago crowd of 10,000 to capture the decision. He swept the championship rounds and won the decision by scores of 114-113, 115-113 and 115-112. With the victory, Diaz cemented his place among the best lightweights in the sport and one of the most popular and respected athletes in the sports-crazy town of Chicago. A member of the 1996 U.S. Olympic team, Diaz, with 12 years of experience as a professional, is more than prepared to handle the pressures that come with battling boxing’s pound-for-pound most exciting fighter.
The Pacquiao vs. Diaz pay-per-view telecast beginning at 9 p.m. ET / 6 p.m. PT, has a suggested retail price of $49.95, will be produced and distributed by HBO Pay-Per-View and will be available to 71 million pay-per-view homes. The telecast will be available in HD-TV for those viewers who can receive HD. HBO Pay-Per-View is the leading supplier of event programming to the pay-per-view industry. Hunky Dorys Fight Night July 12
Irish title double bill added to Hunky Dorys Fight Night
Two mouth watering Irish title fights have been added to the next Hunky Dorys Fight Night, which will be headlined by Bernard Dunne at the National Stadium, Dublin on July 12th.
The “Pink Panther” Jim Rock will return to the ring as he attempts to become an unprecedented 4 weight Irish Champion by stepping up to Light Heavyweight to tackle Jonjo Finnegan.
A second Irish title fight on the card will see two reigning Irish champs clash when Light Welterweight kingpin Andrew Murray moves down a weight to challenge Peter McDonagh for his Lightweight belt.
Rock sees his clash with Finnegan as an opportunity to cement his place in Irish boxing history in what he admits will probably be his last ever appearance in the ring.
“I’ve made history by becoming the first Irish professional to win Irish titles at 3 different weights but I’d like to make that 4 because I think that would give me a bit of extra breathing space in terms of safeguarding that record.
“I know I’ve threatened retirement before but I think this fight will be it for me,” admitted the Dubliner who recently turned 36. “If I’m realistic I probably shouldn’t be fighting and my wife would certainly agree with that but there’s no other buzz quite like it. No matter what you achieve in business or in anything else you can never match the feeling of getting into that ring in front of a couple of thousand people. It’s the ultimate gladiatorial sport and that adrenalin rush is very hard to leave behind.
“What happens with me is that when I haven’t fought in a while I tend to put on a few pounds and then when I go back to the gym to get back into shape it always ends up with me climbing back into the ring just to spar a few rounds. That’s when I get the buzz back and you can’t beat the camaraderie and craic you get up in John Breen’s gym in Belfast.
“It’s buzzing there at the moment, Neil Sinclair has an EU title fight in Italy at the weekend, Martin Rogan is flying high after winning the prize fighter and will be fighting Audley Harrison next month in the U.K. and Paul McCloskey and Stephen Haughian are in great form as well so when you’re in the middle of those guys it really gets you motivated.”
Rock will need to be motivated if Finnegan is to be believed. Based in Burton-on-Trent the 28 year old’s roots are in Gort, Co. Galway and he’s desperate for Irish title success after rebounding from career threatening injuries last year.
“This fight has been talked about quite a few times in recent years and for one reason or another it’s never come off but finally it’s happening now and I can’t wait,” said Finnegan.
“I was in a bad car accident last year and the doctors told me I’d never box again but I was determined to get back in there and that experience has taught me that you have to make the most of any opportunities that come your way and grab them with both hands.
“I’ve a lot of respect for Jim, he’s been around the block and I know that I will have my work cut out but I’ll be in the shape of my life and I’ll be ready to take that Irish title.”
Rock admits to knowing little about Finnegan but realises that he is a major threat. “I know he’ll really be up for this, he’s been very active recently and he’s a warm up fight lined up as well so he’ll be ring fit where as I’ll have a bit of ring rust to shed after over a year out but I really want that fourth Irish title belt.”
The build up to the second Irish title decider on the card promises to be a distinctly frostier affair with a war of words already underway between the rival camps of Peter McDonagh and Andrew Murray.
McDonagh will be defending the Irish title he won in controversial fashion against Michael Gomez in 2006 while the undefeated Murray will be attempting to add the Lightweight belt to the Light Weterweight belt he already holds.
Both men have sparred countless rounds with each other in the past and both camps hold vastly differing views on the outcome of those sessions.
McDonagh’s manager Mark Roe said, “I wasn’t involved with Peter back then but I had heard at the time and Peter confirmed to me afterwards that he broke Murray’s jaw in two places during one of their spars. I don’t think it was anything malicious on Peter’s behalf, it was just one of those injuries that happens in sparring but it’s something to consider for those people that say Peter’s not a puncher.
“Peter’s a professional and he’s nothing against Andrew because he’s a nice kid but this is a big chance for Peter to impress and he’s working very hard in the gym for it. Sparring is sparring but all that goes out the window in a real fight but when you look at the experience Peter has against Andrew you can draw your own conclusions.”
Murray’s manager Mickey Helliet is bullish about his man’s chances. “Actions speak louder than words and we’ve wanted this fight for the last 18 months while we’ve only had silence from McDonagh during that time. In fact I think that’s a big psychological advantage to Andrew and means he’s won the first round.
“I truly believe that this is a foregone conclusion for Andrew as long as Peter actually turns up. I won’t believe it’s happening until the ring has cleared and the two guys are left standing there with the first bell about to go - even then I’ll have to pinch myself.
“Peter has pulled out of fights before, he was supposed to fight Oisin Fagan in Dublin and he pulled out of that and because of Andrew he nearly pulled out of the Gomez fight. Andrew’s trainer Paul Rees told me after one of their sparring sessions for that fight Andrew was so dominant that McDonagh was considering not going ahead with the Gomez fight. I know they had some pretty heated sparring sessions but I know Andrew always got the better of them.
Also featured on the undercard is the return of exciting Belfast puncher, Darren Corbett, Dublin’s Ian Tims, Castlebar native Keith Cresham and other bouts. Tickets for the Hunky Dorys Fight Night priced from €50 are on sale from Ticketmaster.ie and all usual outlets.
