After reading some derogatory stories unfairly criticizing Irish Ropes Promotions for canceling its March 16th scheduled “Erin Go Brawl II” pro boxing show at WaMu Theater in Madison Square Garden, I am compelled to set the record straight about why we pulled the plug 10 days out and to explain what really happened leading up to the final decision.
First, though, I’d like to offer my condolences to Liam Neeson, and his family, for the loss of his wife. He attended several of the shows we promoted and I met him at many Irish benefits. Liam is a great man.
I’d also like to congratulate Brian Dunne on his great world-title winning performance last weekend and also to his promoter, Brian Peters, and trainer, Harry Hawkins - you reap what you sow! I’d also like to congratulate Mathew Macklin for winning the British middleweight championship, Paul McClosky for successfully defending his British title, and Andy Lee for his good performance.
I am, however, disappointed by what Lee said in newspapers back home about our show being canceled. I had a choice of losing $50,000 by canceling when we did, or to potentially lose $250,000 to go ahead. I was not under any contractual obligation to any of the fighters and chose to take the lesser hit.
The poor economy in New York and back in Ireland played a part in poor advance ticket sales, but the real reason for it was Team Lee. Let’s review the situation leading up to the cancelation. My first call to Manny Steward was for Lee to fight Walid Smichet. He agreed and it was even listed on Boxrec.com. Damien McCann, who is in charge of making deals for Lee, said they would take the fight but not for $30,000. Negotiations went back and forth for a few weeks and we finally agreed on $50,000, $4000 in comps (tickets), plus another $10,000 if the gross gate receipts were more than $425,000.
But then Lee said he wouldn’t fight Smichet because he knew about the animosity between Irish Ropes and John Duddy and he didn’t want to embarrass Duddy by fighting Smichet. Well, as it turned out, fans weren’t interested in buying tickets to watch Lee fight somebody that hadn’t won any of his last eight fights, Antwun Echols, who hasn’t won since 2004 and was knocked out the same night Andy fought in Ireland. Lee ridiculed us for the way we promoted the show and he even trashed the traditional Irish pub we had the press conference at, Jack Dempsey’s, where Gerry Cooney had his press conferences in the old days, as well as John Duddy and James Moore, and even a press conference for a documentary about Billy Collins was held there.
We promoted “Erin Go Brawl II” the same way we promoted any of our shows at Madison Square Garden. People simply weren’t buying tickets to see Lee fight a non-competitive fight against Echols. When I decided to pull the plug on the show, 10 days before the scheduled event, we had sold only 1500 tickets, approximately $130,000 worth, compared to $400,000 at the same time for our previous show (“Erin Go Brawl”) there. Bars that normally sell 300-400 tickets had sold only 20-30 for this one and nobody was going in or calling for tickets. It was inevitable and although I was terribly disappointed, I really didn’t have much of a choice about canceling the show.
Lee goes and talks to papers back home ridiculing me, saying he had to find-out from a third party that the show had been canceled. Within 10 minutes of deciding to cancel the show, I called, in order, the commission (New York State Athletic Commission), Madison Square Garden, (Irish-based boxing promoter) Brian Peters to ask if he could put Andy on his card, and then to Emanuel Steward. I told him the bad news was our show was canceled, but the good news was Andy would be fighting on Peters’ show in Ireland a week later than our show was scheduled. Andy Lee was with Emanuel.
Looking back at what happened, there was also a lot of bitterness about boxing in the Irish community (in New York City) resulting from a very negative article written by Thomas Hauser, of Team Duddy. My hands are tied on the advice of my attorney, but when everything is settled in court, I guarantee you the truth will come out on that subject.
We took the high road and didn’t blast anybody in the media for what’s happened to Irish Ropes Promotions. Too many lies and mistruths have been told, so I felt there was a need to explain everything from our side.

We follow up on the commentaries of the past two weeks on this show by Dr. Margaret Goodman, focusing again on why the March 14 fight between Amir Khan and Marco Antonio Barrera should have been stopped far sooner than itwas because of a severe cut on Barrera's forehead due to an accidental head clash in the first round. We discuss the latest findings in the Antonio Margarito-Javier Capetillo hand wrap scandal, where authorities in California have officially revealed that the hand wraps they were attempting to use against Shane Mosley in their January 24 fight contained calcium and sulfur, two key ingredients of plaster of Paris. We explain that while lifetime bans of Margarito and Capetillo might be justified in this case, there is, unfortunately and incredibly, no central body in boxing which has the authority to issuesuch a ban. And we also discuss how the American boxing establishment has let the marquee division in boxing, the heavyweights, slip right through their hands and end up centered in Europe. On the positive side, we preview the important 140-pound title unification fight between WBO champion Kendall Holt (25-2, 13 KOs) and WBC champion Timothy Bradley (23-0, 11 KOs). British Boxer Marianne Marston Strikes Gold With New Sponsorship Deal.

American trained English Super Bantamweight Marianne ‘Golden Girl’Marston, along with various soon to be announced American championship boxers, will be spearheading London based sporting equipment and apparel manufacturer Pugilistic Urban Garments planned assault on the $50 Billion American sporting goods market in 2009 with their pugilistic arts flagship brand P.U.G. Athletic. Marianne, a protégé of former Heavyweight Champion of the World, Smokin’Joe Frazier and Cruiserweight World Champion Steve ‘USS’ Cunningham, was previously sponsored by P.U.G. Athletic prior to her moving her training base, from Gleason's Gym (London) near Tower Bridge, to Philadelphia and Smokin’ Joe Frazier’s Gym, where she was under the personal tutelage of the legendary Heavyweight champ and his son Marvis, in February 2008. Marianne’s American adventure soon became a roller coaster ride as shortly after committing herself to being with Smokin’ Joe Frazier, to prepare for her professional debut, the Philadelphia landmark gym closed down. Marianne’s dream looked at an end after just 58 days. Not one to give up so easily Marianne tried out for Percy ‘Buster’ Custusat the “home of champions”, The James Shuler Memorial Gym, in WestPhiladelphia.

Initially working with former Junior Middleweight World Champion Robert ‘Bam Bam’ Hines before switching her day to day training, due to her having difficulties understanding Robert’s strong accent which was causing frustrations between them, to the exceptional female trainer Shar’ron Baker. Around the same time P.U.G. Athletic, who were concentrating on theEuropean sporting goods market, decided not to renew their sponsorshiparrangement as Marianne would be initially competing in America and assuch could not see any benefit to their brand at that time. Just as disaster loomed again for Marianne up steps Cruiserweight KingSteve ‘USS’ Cunningham and his wife and manager Livvy who invited Marianne to be part of Team ‘USS’ Cunningham, opening up a whole new world ofopportunities for her including sessions at training camp with Team ‘USS’Cunningham’s world class coach Anthony Chase and advice from team leader Steve ‘USS’ Cunningham and “Trainer of the Year” contender Brother NazeemRichardson in addition to day to day coaching from Shar’ron. Marianne, who returned to England at the beginning of March in order toarrange the visa she requires for her professional debut at the 9th May‘09 Ivan Cohen promoted event in South Philadelphia, met with P.U.G.Athletic boss John Rooney Jnr. when she returned to Gleason’s Gym (London)for some training sessions and a new sponsorship deal was arranged inrecord time. Over the past year I have tried out loads of gloves and couldn’t find any that came close to my old ones. Whilst I’m enjoying being back in London and training at Gleason’s, I’m really looking forward to getting back to Philly so I can be fullyprepared for my fight. Don King Files Protest on Behalf of Marco Antonio Barrera; Promoter Claims Amir Khan Won a ‘Tainted Victory’ Until a Rematch Can Be Held
DEERFIELD BEACH, Fla.—Promoter Don King has filed a protest with the British Boxing Board of Control, World Boxing Organization and World Boxing Association on behalf of Marco Antonio Barrera claiming his accidental clash of heads with Amir Khan during the first round of their match should have resulted in the fight being ruled no contest.
The five-time world champion Barrera and rising 22-year-old British star Khan—who had been knocked out in 54 seconds six months earlier and badly needed a win—had barely begun to fight in front of a sold-out crowd of 20,000 at M.E.N Arena on March 14 in Manchester, England, when the two boxers’ heads inadvertently slammed together while trying to land punches.
The accidental meeting of heads occurred during the second minute of the fight, opening a huge gash on the left side of Barrera’s head. The deep scalp cut began to bleed profusely and immediately caused a virtual blood waterfall to spill into Barrera’s left eye.

“Amir Khan is in possession of a tainted victory,” King said. “The referee and doctor should have stopped the fight immediately after that incredible, accidental clash of heads. That they allowed the fight to continue with Barrera competing at a huge disadvantage goes against everything that’s designed to protect the health and safety of boxers, the good of the sport and uphold the traditions emanating from the Marquis of Queensbury rules.”
Under the rules governing the bout, had the fight been stopped prior to the end of the fourth round due to the accidental headbutt, the official ruling would have been no contest requiring an immediate rematch. Barrera’s head cut had been gushing blood that flowed into his eye and impaired his vision from the first round, but referee Dave Parris waited until midway through the pivotal fourth round before asking the ringside physician to inspect the open wound for the first time.
Even though blood was visibly flooding Barrera’s eye during the inspection, literally blinding him, the doctor inexplicably ruled the fight could continue only to recommend the fight be stopped in the following round. The key difference being that the rules then allowed for the fight to go to the judges’ scorecards for a decision, which favored Kahn unanimously. After the fight, Barrera would need 33 stitches to close the massive laceration.
Khan, his promoter Frank Warren and the fight’s referee all hail from England—and almost all of the audience were there to see the Briton face the stiffest test of his career.
The English announcers for the Sky Box Office pay-per-view telecast were vivid in their descriptions during the fight.
“It was a heck of a clash, wasn’t it?” blow-by-blow announcer Ian Darke exclaimed in the first round to expert analyst Jim Watt, a former lightweight world champion. Darke later asked Watt, “What can they do?,” referring to Barrera’s cornermen after round three.
“I don’t know that any cut man can stop that,” Watt replied. “I mean that’s like something you would expect in a road accident. That’s horrendous. It’s long and it’s deep. You saw the impact when the heads clashed. That’s as bad a clash of heads as I have seen in all my years in boxing and the damage, I don’t reckon they can do anything with that.”
Darke concurred, “It’s like trying to stem a flood, really, with handkerchiefs or something, isn’t it?”
Barrera said immediately after the contest that the fight should have been stopped in the first round.
“If I’d have had both my eyes the fight wouldn’t have ended this way,” Barrera said. “I couldn’t see the guy from the first round, the blood was in my eye and I just couldn’t see with it.”
Chief Physician for the Florida Boxing Commission and Vice President of the American Association of Professional Ringside Physicians Dr. Allan Fields, who inspected Barrera prior to the fight and was in attendance at the match in Manchester, said he believes the inspection by the ringside doctor came woefully late and the contest should have been stopped earlier.
“I question why the officials waited to make this decision until the fifth round,” Fields said in a statement. “Barrera was visibly impaired by an accident for almost four rounds, placing him at unnecessary risk and certainly contributing to his subsequent decision loss.”
King is imploring the BBBC, WBO and WBA to step up and right what he perceives as a wrong.
“Marco Antonio Barrera should not lose any of his position and stature to this travesty of justice,” King added. “He should not be punished for what was beyond his control. He fought like the great Mexican champion he is with valor, courage and honor while those charged with ensuring a level field of competition failed the sport and the fighter greatly. They endangered his health and safety and every other boxer who follows him into the ring hereafter if this error in judgment is not corrected.

“Knowing the rules of the sport originated in England and are designed to create a level playing field to protect boxers from fighting at a disadvantage after an accident, the doctor’s decision to wait until the fourth round for a doctor’s inspection and the subsequent stoppage the following round certainly raises needless questions and suspicions,” King said. “Barrera needed a seeing-eye dog to make it back to his corner from the first round but the officials let it continue.”

The five-time world champion Barrera and rising 22-year-old British star Khan—who had been knocked out in 54 seconds six months earlier and badly needed a win—had barely begun to fight in front of a sold-out crowd of 20,000 at M.E.N Arena on March 14 in Manchester, England, when the two boxers’ heads inadvertently slammed together while trying to land punches.
The accidental meeting of heads occurred during the second minute of the fight, opening a huge gash on the left side of Barrera’s head. The deep scalp cut began to bleed profusely and immediately caused a virtual blood waterfall to spill into Barrera’s left eye.

“Amir Khan is in possession of a tainted victory,” King said. “The referee and doctor should have stopped the fight immediately after that incredible, accidental clash of heads. That they allowed the fight to continue with Barrera competing at a huge disadvantage goes against everything that’s designed to protect the health and safety of boxers, the good of the sport and uphold the traditions emanating from the Marquis of Queensbury rules.”
Under the rules governing the bout, had the fight been stopped prior to the end of the fourth round due to the accidental headbutt, the official ruling would have been no contest requiring an immediate rematch. Barrera’s head cut had been gushing blood that flowed into his eye and impaired his vision from the first round, but referee Dave Parris waited until midway through the pivotal fourth round before asking the ringside physician to inspect the open wound for the first time.
Even though blood was visibly flooding Barrera’s eye during the inspection, literally blinding him, the doctor inexplicably ruled the fight could continue only to recommend the fight be stopped in the following round. The key difference being that the rules then allowed for the fight to go to the judges’ scorecards for a decision, which favored Kahn unanimously. After the fight, Barrera would need 33 stitches to close the massive laceration.
Khan, his promoter Frank Warren and the fight’s referee all hail from England—and almost all of the audience were there to see the Briton face the stiffest test of his career.
The English announcers for the Sky Box Office pay-per-view telecast were vivid in their descriptions during the fight.
“It was a heck of a clash, wasn’t it?” blow-by-blow announcer Ian Darke exclaimed in the first round to expert analyst Jim Watt, a former lightweight world champion. Darke later asked Watt, “What can they do?,” referring to Barrera’s cornermen after round three.
“I don’t know that any cut man can stop that,” Watt replied. “I mean that’s like something you would expect in a road accident. That’s horrendous. It’s long and it’s deep. You saw the impact when the heads clashed. That’s as bad a clash of heads as I have seen in all my years in boxing and the damage, I don’t reckon they can do anything with that.”
Darke concurred, “It’s like trying to stem a flood, really, with handkerchiefs or something, isn’t it?”
Barrera said immediately after the contest that the fight should have been stopped in the first round.
“If I’d have had both my eyes the fight wouldn’t have ended this way,” Barrera said. “I couldn’t see the guy from the first round, the blood was in my eye and I just couldn’t see with it.”
Chief Physician for the Florida Boxing Commission and Vice President of the American Association of Professional Ringside Physicians Dr. Allan Fields, who inspected Barrera prior to the fight and was in attendance at the match in Manchester, said he believes the inspection by the ringside doctor came woefully late and the contest should have been stopped earlier.
“I question why the officials waited to make this decision until the fifth round,” Fields said in a statement. “Barrera was visibly impaired by an accident for almost four rounds, placing him at unnecessary risk and certainly contributing to his subsequent decision loss.”
King is imploring the BBBC, WBO and WBA to step up and right what he perceives as a wrong.
“Marco Antonio Barrera should not lose any of his position and stature to this travesty of justice,” King added. “He should not be punished for what was beyond his control. He fought like the great Mexican champion he is with valor, courage and honor while those charged with ensuring a level field of competition failed the sport and the fighter greatly. They endangered his health and safety and every other boxer who follows him into the ring hereafter if this error in judgment is not corrected.

“Knowing the rules of the sport originated in England and are designed to create a level playing field to protect boxers from fighting at a disadvantage after an accident, the doctor’s decision to wait until the fourth round for a doctor’s inspection and the subsequent stoppage the following round certainly raises needless questions and suspicions,” King said. “Barrera needed a seeing-eye dog to make it back to his corner from the first round but the officials let it continue.”

UNDEFEATED HEAVYWEIGHTS BRETT ROGERS AND ABONGO HUMPHREY TO BATTLE APRIL 11
New York- Heavyweight mixed martial arts (MMA) forces, Brett “The Grim” Rogers (8-0) and “Abongo” Humphrey (12-0) will put their unbeaten records on the line when they face off on the live SHOWTIME televised portion of Strikeforce’s “Shamrock vs. Diaz” mega-fight card at HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif. on Saturday, April 11.
“I feel like a new and improved person who’s not just in the sport to be in the sport. I’m in this to take it all the way,” said the 28 year-old Rogers, a 6-foot 5-inch, 265 pound human weapon, whose aggressive, unforgiving style of cage combat has ended each of his eight fights in the first round.
“There’s certain things in that first minute of the fight that people do and they do the same thing in every fight. The last couple of fights, I knew what my opponent was going to do and I just waited for him to do it,” explained Rogers of his calculated approach. “For the most part, I try to be as smart a fighter as I can.”
The majority of fans are familiar with Rogers’s kickboxing and Jiu-Jitsu skills, but what they have not yet seen put into play by the Minneapolis native is his background in Wing Chun, a Chinese martial art known for its aggressive striking techniques in close quarter combat.
“The way I see it, I just got to get to the point where I feel comfortable enough to use it,” said Rogers of his Wing Chun skill set. “I don’t know if I’m going to use it this time around but, once I do, it’s gonna be on.”
Humphrey, who hails from Atlanta, Ga., introduced himself to a national audience last year as a contestant on BET’s MMA reality series “Iron Ring” where he was a member of a fight team coached by MMA star, “Mr. International” Shonie Carter, and managed by hip-hop artist and producer Lil’ Jon.
“Some people are under the impression that most of the fighters on the show were push overs, but I fought and defeated some pretty well-known contenders,” said the 31-year-old Humphrey, who stands 5-11 and weighs approximately 245 pounds.
Amongst the fighters Humphrey defeated during his stint on “Iron Ring” were former K-1 USA contender, Jeff “Big Diesel” Ford, and Carlos Moreno, who Humphrey knocked out with a head kick.
“I move more like a 205-pounder than I do a 245. I bring a lot of athleticism and skill into the cage,” Humphrey asserted.
While his birth name is “Ronald,” Humphrey prefers to be addressed as “Abongo,” the name of an African warrior spirit believed to protect a village located in The Republic of Ghana. The moniker was bestowed upon him two and a half years ago after he endured a series of mentally and physically grueling tasks during a rites of passage trip to Africa.
Humphrey’s experience there inspired him to establish a non-profit organization that allows him to introduce other African-Americans to their heritage by bringing them to Africa.
“There’s certain things that are lacking in the black community here and one of them has to do with cultural identity,” explained Humphrey. “Fighting and doing the community work in Africa is something that really drives me and motivates me in life.”
The “Shamrock vs. Diaz” event represents the dawn of a new age for Strikeforce as it will be the first one under the world championship MMA promotion’s new television agreement with Showtime Networks Inc. The live telecast will feature five fights including a thrilling main event between four-time world champion and MMA legend Frank Shamrock (24-9-1) and fellow knockout artist Nick Diaz (18-7, 1 NC), contested at a catch weight of 179 pounds.
Strikeforce World Lightweight Champion Josh “The Punk” Thomson (16-2) and superstar “El Nino” Gilbert Melendez (14-2) will revisit their classic five-round battle when they collide in a rematch for the coveted 155-pound title.
Middleweight (185-pound limit) sluggers Scott “Hands of Steel” Smith (16-5, 1 NC) and Benji “Razor” Radach (19-4) will also meet in a featured contest.
Women’s MMA power houses, Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos (6-1) and Hitomi “Girlfight Monster” Akano (14-5) will slug it out in a 145-pound showdown.

The Son of Former Legendary Champion to Battle Harry Joe Yorgey In Matchup of Unbeatens on ShoBox: The New Generation
NEW YORK– Ronald Hearns loves March and all the madness that goes with it.
The son of legendary eight-time world champion Thomas “Hit Man” Hearns, Ronald earned his college degree in criminal justice from American University in Washington D.C. While in college, Hearns played for the basketball team. This year American University’s basketball team won the Patriot League and advanced to the exclusive tournament field of 64 for the 2009 NCAA® Division I Men’s Basketball Championship for the first time.
But this Saturday night, Hearns will be nowhere near a court; rather, he’ll be in the ring when he faces fellow unbeaten junior middleweight Harry Joe Yorgey in a 10-round bout on a special Saturday edition of ShoBox: The New Generation live on SHOWTIME (11 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the west coast).
Detroit’s Hearns (21-0, 17 KOs) and Yorgey (21-0-1, 9 KOs), of Bridgeport, Pa., will open the ShoBox telecast from the Buffalo Run Casino in Miami, Okla.
World-class super middleweight Andre Dirrell (17-0, 12 KOs), of Flint, Mich., will meet Derrick Findley (13-2, 8 KO’s) of Gary, Ind., in the ShoBox main event. The event is promoted by Gary Shaw Productions, LLC, and DiBella Entertainment.
SHOWTIME: You played collegiate basketball at American University. Did you follow its run in the NCAA tournament?
RONALD HEARNS: “Oh, man, yeah, I love March Madness®. I don’t know many of the players, but I got an email from the coach. My bracket is going OK. I like Pittsburgh. I like Connecticut and l like Louisville.
SHOWTIME: You turned professional after obtaining your college degree. Did you always think you would be a professional fighter?
RONALD HEARNS: “Boxing was always my first love. I always wanted to box since I was about 10 or 11 years old but my dad never allowed me to fight at that time so every time I tried to sneak into the gym the guys would catch me and ban me from the gym. My dad told me once I got my college degree that I could box so I went and did that. He knew I’d be a grown man then and could make my own decision. So the day I came home from graduation I told him I wanted to go to the gym and that’s when I started training.
“It’s something that’s just in me. I love boxing so much. Every time I put a tape in and watch a fight, I just want to get up and start punching somebody. It doesn’t matter if it’s my dad I’m watching or someone else, I just love watching boxing. You could say I’m a real student of the game.”
SHOWTIME: You haven’t fought since last appearing on SHOWTIME in October when you beat Paul Clavette. Has the layoff affected you and your training?
RONALD HEARNS: “It’s been kind of hard because I was scheduled to fight in January but that fight was called off. But I always stay in the gym no matter what. I’m always in there training. I’m a real gym rat. Harry’s a great fighter. He’s a real good boxer and can be flashy at times. You know when you get two undefeated fighters in the ring at the same time that someone’s ‘O’ has got to go. We’re putting it all on the line and hope to put on a great show for the people.”
SHOWTIME: Has it been difficult being the son of Thomas Hearns?
RONALD HEARNS: “Yeah, in a way it’s been tough because the expectations have been set so high. With the things he accomplished the bar is set pretty high. I turned pro so late (age 25) and have really had to learn on the job. People don’t know that I was never really around boxing that much as a kid. I was never in the gym training and really learning how to box. Things are just starting to fall in place right now. But I think I don’t really have all the wear and tear on my body from my limited amateur experience so right now I don’t think that age (Hearns recently turned 30) really matters.”
SHOWTIME: What are some of your earliest memories of your father and boxing?
RONALD HEARNS: I think just watching early tapes of my dad’s fights. The Pipino Cuevas fight (for the WBA welterweight championship in 1980), the (Juan Domingo) Roldan fight (for the WBC middleweight championship in 1987), the first and second (Sugar Ray) Leonard fights and the (Marvin) Hagler fight. There were just so many memorable moments. Just sitting back and putting the tapes in. I just never get sick of watching them. He’ll be leading me into the ring on Saturday. He always lets me know he’s there for me and that I can give him a call anytime I need something. He’s been there and there’s nothing he hasn’t seen inside the ring.”
SHOWTIME: What kind of style will we see from you early on Saturday night?
RONALD HEARNS: “Well, Harry Joe is a front-runner. He always starts pretty quick. I’m going to go out there and try to slow him down early. I’m just going to work off my jab and once I get my jab going everything else will fall into place. I’m ready to go out there and perform and show the people how I’ve progressed and how I’m trying now to make a name for myself. I believe this fight will prove to people that I can do some special things in boxing.”

Black Broadcasting Network Announces New Sports Programming Targeting Urban Viewers
HOUSTON- Black Broadcasting Network (BBN), the only 24/7 multiplatform network exclusively targeting 18-34 year old urban African-American audiences, today announced the addition of sports to the network's programming mix. Black College Sports, Ringside Boxing and Premier Basketball League will all be available in full HD to viewers when the network launches later this year.

2004 U.S. Olympian Jason “Big Six” Estrada plans to upset No. 1 rated Alexander Povetkin April 4 in Dusseldorf, Germany
PROVIDENCE– 2004 U.S. Olympian Jason “Big Six” Estrada held an open media workout today at his ”Big Six Academy” in Providence before he departs Sunday for Germany to fight Alexander Povetkin, 2004 Olympic gold medalist and the IBF’s No. 1 contender, April 4 in Dusseldorf, Germany.

Estrada (15-1, 3 KOs) and Povetkin (16-0, 12 KOs) nearly fought several times as amateurs but it never materialized, due to their contrasting schedules, until now as professionals. Povetkin, who has a mandated title shot this fall against IBF heavyweight Wladimir Klitschko, signed to fight Estrada because, according to reports from his camp, he wants a test not a tune-up.
“Training has gone well and my body is good,” Estrada said today. “I’m going over there to whoop his butt. He’s going to be out of his league. He’s not used to fighting somebody like me. This isn’t going to be cute; it’s going to be a real fight. The only real fight he’s been in was against Eddie Chambers (WDEC12). I thought he (Povetkin) lost but they gave it to him. He’d throw five slaps but only two would be what I call clean. I’m a lot more aggressive and mean than Eddie Chambers.”
Providence-native Estrada was one of the most highly decorated American amateur boxers ever, compiling an amazing 261-14 record in U.S. competition. He was the first boxer to win both the U.S. Nationals and U.S. Challenge three years (2001-2003) in a row.

McCullough fight unlikely but Vazquez and Caballero in Dunne's sights
Promoter Brian Peters believes that Wayne McCullough is still some way from a crack at newly crowned WBA World Super Bantamweight champion, Bernard Dunne.
McCullough sent an open letter to Dunne yesterday challenging him to put his new title on the line against him in an all Irish World title fight. However with McCullough just months away from his 39th birthday and coming off 3 straight defeats Peters thinks it’s a match that’s a long way from reality.
“Wayne’s a good friend and he’s been a great servant to Irish boxing as well as a great world champion,” said Peters. “However he hasn’t won a fight since 2004 so he really would need to put together a few good wins including a win over a ranked contender before it could be considered a viable fight.”
Peters says that no firm decisions have been made yet with regard to Bernard’s next fight and all options are currently being explored. “At the moment Bernard is taking a well earned break and enjoying his success. It was an incredible fight and an incredible night and we’re certainly not short of options now.
“As I said after the fight the world is his oyster and there are all kinds of avenues open to us now. It’s a case of taking our time and working out what the best move is but we certainly won’t rush into anything.”
“Obviously now that Bernard’s become a World Champion he’s in a very strong position. The dream fight would be a big Las Vegas showdown with Israel Vazquez. He’s currently sidelined with a few long term injuries but is considered one of the best pound for pound fighters in the sport.
“It’s a clash Bernard would relish as he sparred Vazquez day in, day out as a young pro when he was out in Los Angeles and I think those sparring sessions proved to a lot of people that Bernard had what it takes to reach the very top of the sport.
“You also have guys like Celestino Caballero calling Bernard out. He says he’d be willing to come to Ireland so right now there are a lot of options to consider including the possibility of a voluntary defence for Bernard at home in Dublin.”
Peters has also warned of an even scarier prospect for the World’s super bantamweights.
“I still believe we’ve yet to see the best of Bernard Dunne, he proved last Saturday night that he belongs up there with the legends of Irish sport and I still think there is more to come from him over the next few years.”

Chris Tuchscherer captures 1st SNMMA title at “Beatdown 4”
NEW TOWN, North Dakota– North Dakota-native Chris Tuchscherer captured the first Sovereign Nations Mixed Martial Arts (SNMMA) title by defeating veteran heavyweight Brandon “The Iron Lion” Lee Hinkle, headlining “Beatdown 4” last Saturday night before a sold-out crowd at 4 Bears Casino in New Town, North Dakota.
SNMMA links federally recognized tribes throughout the United States and Canada. SNMMA’s mission is to develop, promote and help regulate mixed-martial-arts in a fair and professional manner by federally recognized tribes that are sovereign nations.
Former NCAA, Division II wrestling champion Hinkle (14-10-1, 8 (T)KO, 4 Submissions), fighting out of Columbus, Ohio, didn’t have any answers for 2-time NCAA, Div. II All-America wrestler Tuchscherer (16-1-0, 5 (T)KOs, 7 Submissions), who hails from nearby Fargo.
Tuchscherer, who trains regularly with UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar in Minneapolis, controlled the action from start to finish, which came at 4:43 of the fourth round, when the referee stopped the fight due to a series of damaging strikes.
“Chris is a great athlete who takes the sport and his career very serious like a true professional must in order to have any kind of future in this demanding sport,” SNMMA president Pat Packineau said. “The SNMMA is honored to have the heavyweight title go to a person such as Chris Tuchscherer, who respects what the sport has to offer as he continues his journey to become one of the top fighters in the world.”

MATTHEWS-PASLEY ADDED TO LEGENDARY BLUE HORIZON CARD ON APRIL 3RD Cruiserweight showdown added to packed card on April 3rd
PHILADELPHIA- A very intriguing six round cruiserweight fight has been added to an already packed show that will take place at The Legendary Blue Horizon on Friday night, April 3rd.
The card is promoted by Vernoca L. Michael and Blue Horizon Boxing Promotions Inc.
Julio Cesar Matthews will risk his undefeated record when he takes on the streaking Kamrah Pasley in a bout scheduled for six rounds.
Matthews of Reading, PA has a record of 6-0 with five knockouts and has knocked out four straight opponents since returning from an eleven year hiatus from the ring.
The thirty-nine year old Matthews scored his most significant stoppages in his last two bouts when he first took out Chris Stallworth (9-1) in fifty-nine seconds on September 13th, 2009. In his last bout, Matthews scored a third round stoppage over William Bailey on December 5th in Reading.
Despite losing his first three bouts, Pasley was undeterred and it has paid off as he has won his last three bouts to get back to an even record of 3-3 with one knockout.
Those three losses came at The Legendary Blue Horizon so Pasley will be looking for redemption in The Blue Horizon ring.
Pasley has won all three of those bouts in 2009. The streak started with a third round stoppage of thirty-three fight veteran Cullen Rogers on January 16th. Then he scored a shocking unanimous decision over prospect Pedro Martinez (3-1) on January 31st. In his last bout, Pasley scored four round unanimous decision over debuting John Burgos on March 13th.
That fight was added to a much anticipated card that will feature one of the most talked about bouts in the city as undefeated Israeli sensation, Ran Nakash (17-0, 12 KO’s)takes on Philly-favorite Dave Brunelli (8-4, 3 KO’s) in a cruiserweight fight scheduled for eight rounds.
Last week, Team Brunelli guaranteed victory. Nakash will be arriving in Philadelphia this coming weekend and they will be sure to have a response to Brunelli’s proclamation.

NEW YORK– “Lightning” Harry Joe Yorgey puts his undefeated record on the line March 28, when he faces fellow unbeaten junior middleweight Ronald Hearns in a 10-round bout on a special Saturday edition of ShoBox: The New Generation live on SHOWTIME (11 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the west coast).
Yorgey is proud to have the opportunity to compete on national television.
“If I’m a boxing fan and I don’t have SHOWTIME then I’m going to run out and get it,” the outgoing, well-spoken Bridgeport, Pa., resident said. “You’ve got two guys that are undefeated trying to make it to the top. It’s going to be great.”
Detroit’s Hearns (21-0, 17 KOs), the son of legendary Thomas “Hit Man” Hearns, and Yorgey (21-0-1, 9 KOs) will open the ShoBox telecast from the Buffalo Run Casino in Miami, Okla.
World-class super middleweight Andre Dirrell (17-0, 12 KOs), of Flint, Mich., will meet Derrick Findley (13-2, 8 KO’s) of Gary, Ind., in the ShoBox main event. The event is promoted by Gary Shaw Productions, LLC, and DiBella Entertainment.
Yorgey was interviewed recently by SHOWTIME.
SHOWTIME: What are you thoughts about Ronald Hearns?
YORGEY: “Well, we’ve seen a lot of film on Ronald Hearns. He’s a tall fighter and he has a long reach and he knows how to use it. He uses it to his advantage. With a guy like this you have to box and move and stay inside with him. You have to respect his record of 21-0 and 17 knockouts. Of course, I’m aware of who his father is. So many people and reporters have asked me about that. I respect that a lot, but I’m not fighting his father. If he fights anything like his father then I’m in for a big, big fight.”
SHOWTIME: He has a distinct height advantage. How will you cope with that?
YORGEY: “I’m 5-10 and a half and that’s about right for my division. I’ve fought a lot of taller guys, especially in the amateurs, and believe it or not you’ve got to establish your jab. You can’t sit on the end of his jab at his distance. You’ve got to work the angles. I’m ready for whatever he brings to the table.”
SHOWTIME: You quit your full-time job to concentrate on boxing and training for your fights? How is your training going?
YORGEY: “Yeah, it’s going really well. I worked construction for about 10 years. It was tough, the 12-14 hours a day and then two more hours in the gym and then jogging. I had to do it to pay the bills and be a good father to my four kids. These guys I’m going to start facing are not doing that. They’re committed to boxing. So my wife and I got together and she agreed to go back to work and let me train a little in the morning with conditioning and I do my boxing training at night. It’s been tough. I went through a legal battle with my former team. They cancelled some fights on me and so that set me back a little bit but we’re getting through it. I am working with my trainer Henry Rachich and it is going great.”
SHOWTIME: Who was your major influence in boxing growing up?
YORGEY: “My father and I have been watching fights since I was two years old and running around punching the walls. Marvin Hagler was my favorite fighter. I remember watching his fights. My father finally put me in the gym when I was eight or nine years old.”
SHOWTIME: You have four kids. Do they watch your fights?
YORGEY: “Yeah, they do. My oldest son is 12 and he’s had two sparring matches so far. We’ll see if he sticks with it and likes it. He’s going to be in Oklahoma with me and will carry my (IBF North American) belt into the ring.”
SHOWTIME: You’re dedicating this fight to someone close to you. Can you tell us more about that?
YORGEY: “My buddy’s’ niece just turned 23 and the doctors have only given her a couple of months to live. She has a rare, aggressive form of cancer called Desmoplastic Small Round Cell Tumor. I know she’s battling right now and she’s hurting and fighting the cancer day-by-day. World-class super middleweight Andre Dirrell (17-0, 12 KOs), of Flint, Mich., will meet Derrick Findley (13-2, 8 KO’s) of Gary, Ind., in the ShoBox main event. The event is promoted by Gary Shaw Productions, LLC, and DiBella Entertainment.
Yorgey was interviewed recently by SHOWTIME.
SHOWTIME: What are you thoughts about Ronald Hearns?
YORGEY: “Well, we’ve seen a lot of film on Ronald Hearns. He’s a tall fighter and he has a long reach and he knows how to use it. He uses it to his advantage. With a guy like this you have to box and move and stay inside with him. You have to respect his record of 21-0 and 17 knockouts. Of course, I’m aware of who his father is. So many people and reporters have asked me about that. I respect that a lot, but I’m not fighting his father. If he fights anything like his father then I’m in for a big, big fight.”
SHOWTIME: He has a distinct height advantage. How will you cope with that?
YORGEY: “I’m 5-10 and a half and that’s about right for my division. I’ve fought a lot of taller guys, especially in the amateurs, and believe it or not you’ve got to establish your jab. You can’t sit on the end of his jab at his distance. You’ve got to work the angles. I’m ready for whatever he brings to the table.”
SHOWTIME: You quit your full-time job to concentrate on boxing and training for your fights? How is your training going?
YORGEY: “Yeah, it’s going really well. I worked construction for about 10 years. It was tough, the 12-14 hours a day and then two more hours in the gym and then jogging. I had to do it to pay the bills and be a good father to my four kids. These guys I’m going to start facing are not doing that. They’re committed to boxing. So my wife and I got together and she agreed to go back to work and let me train a little in the morning with conditioning and I do my boxing training at night. It’s been tough. I went through a legal battle with my former team. They cancelled some fights on me and so that set me back a little bit but we’re getting through it. I am working with my trainer Henry Rachich and it is going great.”
SHOWTIME: Who was your major influence in boxing growing up?
YORGEY: “My father and I have been watching fights since I was two years old and running around punching the walls. Marvin Hagler was my favorite fighter. I remember watching his fights. My father finally put me in the gym when I was eight or nine years old.”
SHOWTIME: You have four kids. Do they watch your fights?
YORGEY: “Yeah, they do. My oldest son is 12 and he’s had two sparring matches so far. We’ll see if he sticks with it and likes it. He’s going to be in Oklahoma with me and will carry my (IBF North American) belt into the ring.”
SHOWTIME: You’re dedicating this fight to someone close to you. Can you tell us more about that?
YORGEY: “My buddy’s’ niece just turned 23 and the doctors have only given her a couple of months to live. She has a rare, aggressive form of cancer called Desmoplastic Small Round Cell Tumor. I know she’s battling right now and she’s hurting and fighting the cancer day-by-day.
