Diaz Diary: Weekend by the bay‏

Below is a link to the most recent Chicago Sun-Times blog entry from World Boxing Council Lightweight Champion David Diaz detailing his quick trip to the San Francisco area this past weekend for a public workout.

Diaz is currently training in Chicago for his June 28th title defense at LETHAL COMBINATION against The Mexicutioner, Manny Pacquiao at Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, Nev., promoted by Top Rank Incorporated and MP Promotions.

Diaz is providing regular updates on his training and preparation for the fight to the Chicago Sun-Times.

http://www.suntimes.com/sports/boxing/982895,diaz060208.article

Remaining tickets for Pacquiao vs.Diaz, priced at $600, $400, $300, $200 and $100, can be purchased at the Mandalay Bay box office and at all Las Vegas Ticketmaster locations (select Smith’s Food and Drug Centers, Macy’s West at the Fashion Show Mall, and Ritmo Latino). Ticket sales are limited to eight (8) per person. To charge by phone with a major credit card, call Ticketmaster at (702) 474-4000 or Mandalay Bay (702) 632-7580. Tickets are also available for purchase at www.mandalaybay.com or www.ticketmaster.com.

Dubbed "Republica Enemy No. 1," Pacquiao (46-3-2, 34 KOs), from General Santos City, Philippines, has blitzed through the best fighters Mexico has had to offer since 2003 including Erik Morales (KO 3, TKO 10), Marco Antonio Barrera (TKO 11, W 12), Juan Manuel Marquez (W 12, D 12), Oscar Larios (W 12), Emanuel Lucero (TKO 3), Hector Velazquez (TKO 6) and Jorge Solis (KO 8). Pacquiao was named 2006 Fighter of the Year by the Boxing Writers Association of America and The Ring magazine for his two spectacular knockout victories of Mexican icon and three-division champion Morales, as well as his dominating 12-round unanimous decision over former world champion Larios. The hard-hitting southpaw has won 22 of his last 23 bouts including 2007 victories over Barrera and Solis. Pacquiao’s 12-round split decision victory over Marquez earlier this year not only avenged a disputed draw from their 2004 battle, it also made Pacman a four-division world champion.

Diaz (34-1-1, 17 KOs), from Chicago, will be making the second defense of his title. He successfully defended it against the three-division world champion Morales last summer winning a hard-fought unanimous decision over the future Hall of Famer. Although behind on the scorecards early, Diaz remained cool and rallied before the raucous hometown Chicago crowd of 10,000 to capture the decision. He swept the championship rounds and won the decision by scores of 114-113, 115-113 and 115-112. With the victory, Diaz cemented his place among the best lightweights in the sport and one of the most popular and respected athletes in the sports-crazy town of Chicago. A member of the 1996 U.S. Olympic team, Diaz, with 12 years of experience as a professional, is more than prepared to handle the pressures that come with battling boxing’s pound-for-pound most exciting fighter.

The Pacquiao vs. Diaz pay-per-view telecast beginning at 9 p.m. ET / 6 p.m. PT, has a suggested retail price of $49.95, will be produced and distributed by HBO Pay-Per-View and will be available to 71 million pay-per-view homes. The telecast will be available in HD-TV for those viewers who can receive HD. HBO Pay-Per-View is the leading supplier of event programming to the pay-per-view industry. Best Kept Secret in Women’s Boxing Challenges for IFBA World Title‏

HENDERSON, Nevada– The best kept secret in women’s professional boxing today, Crystal Hoy, will not be a mystery to her next opponent, IFBA World flyweight champion Elena “Baby Doll” Reid, in their 10-round title fight on Thursday night, June 12 on Fox Sports Net’s Best Damn Championship Fight Night Period card at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut.

Best Damn Championship Fight Night Period, presented by Cappiello Boxing in association with Hollybrook Regency, Inc., is headlined by a 10-round championship fight between IFBA World junior featherweight champion Lisa “Bad News” Brown (14-3-3, 4 KOs) and challenger Alicia “Slick” Ashley (14-7-1, 1 KO).

Hoy (3-1-2, 2 KOs), fighting out of Las Vegas, is a late replacement for Russian invader Anastasia Toktaulova (12-8, 2 KOs), whose visa problems prevented her from taking on Reid (19-4-5, 5 KOs) for the IFBA crown.

Up until a surprisingly strong performance this past February 29 against NABF title-holder Monica Lovato (11-1), Hoy was a relatively unknown having fought only four times between 2002 and 2004. She hadn’t been in action since November 19, 2005 when she walked up the three steps into the ring to face Lovato in their 8-round title fight. The dangerous Hoy floored Lovato twice in the seventh round but she lost a controversial decision (74-76, 74-76, 74-75) in Lovato’s hometown of Albuquerque that was met by heavy booing upon announcement. After the fight Lovato called Hoy an underestimated, hard hitter who was her toughest opponent.

Hoy and Reid, however, are not strangers and Elena won’t make the mistake of underestimating Crystal. They both live and train in Las Vegas, where they have also sparred. “Crystal’s a great fighter who has a great trainer (Jessie Reid),” Reid said. “I saw what she did to my friend Monica Lovato and I respect Crystal a lot. I prepared for two months to fight Toktaulova and I’m disappointed in few people because they had plenty of time to get her visa straightened out. Crystal is much bigger than Toktaulova but I’m a fighter and at least I know Crystal.
We’ve sparred and two weeks is more than enough time for me to prepare to fight her.

“You know, I really love everything about boxing. It’s tough to explain. I’m really excited to be fighting on the East Coast. Some of my friends, family and fans will be there and others all across North America can watch me fight on Fox Sports Net and see what I’m all about. I’m so excited to be part of this show. Judy (Kulis, IFBA president) puts us all in great match-ups and she does a great service to women’s boxing in the United States. We’re not trying to take away from men’s boxing; we want to add to boxing. Women’s boxing is further along everywhere else in the world than the United States. I could fight in Europe, Japan or Korea and make a lot more money, but I’m an American and I want to help women’s boxing grow by fighting here. Shows like this one, especially with these kinds of match-ups, are what’s been lacking in this country.”

Las Vegas undefeated mega-star Melinda Cooper (18-0, 10 KOs) kick-starts her comeback after nearly 18 months of inactivity against vaunted knockout specialist Donna “Nature Girl” Biggers (19-7-1, 16 KOs), of Shelby, North Carolina, in a special 6-round junior featherweight bout.

Also on the undercard in a pair of 6-rounders, junior featherweight contender Jeri Stizes (14-7-1, 6 KOs), of Springfield, Missouri, faces tough Ela “Bam Bam” Nunez (6-3, 2 KOs), fighting out of Jamestown, New York, while popular Jill Emery (8-2, 3 KOs) and experienced Cristy “Code Red” Nickel (7-6, 4 KOs) -- both fighting out of New York City, college graduates and physical training instructors – meet in an entertaining junior middleweight bout.

Tickets are priced at $10.00, $25.00 and $40.00 and on sale at the Mohegan Sun box office or online at www.mohegansun.com.

Go to www.ifba.com for more information. The undercard will start a 7 PM/ET, followed by the first of three scheduled televised bouts beginning at 8 PM/ET.

IFBA

With the help of various State Boxing Commissions, the IFBA established many of the rules used in the sport today. The IFBA is sanctioning four championship bouts June 13, featuring a showdown between Holly “The Preacher’s Daughter” Holm and Mary Jo Sanders for the vacant IFBA World junior middleweight title and pound-for-pound supremacy, live on pay-per-view television from Albuquerque. JR. MW James Moore calls out Kirkland & Angulo‏

Photo of James Moore & promoter Tommy Gallagher – taken by Robert Mladinich

Undefeated junior middleweight James Moore calls out the division’s young guns: Kirkland, Angulo, Hearns, Wolak, Tsurkan

Undefeated junior middleweight James Moore, a native of County Wicklow, Ireland, who fights out of Queens, New York, can’t wait to open the televised portion of ESPN 2’s Wednesday Fights on June 4 at the Aviator Sports Complex in Brooklyn, NY. As a veteran of 314 amateur fights and the onetime captain of the Irish national amateur team, he is much too experienced to underestimate his opponent, Gabriel Rosada, 9-2 (6 KOS), of Philadelphia.

The main event will feature Yusaf Mack, 24-2-2 (15 KOS), of Philadelphia vs. Daniel Judah, 22-2-3 (10 KOS), of Brooklyn. At stake will be the vacant NABA light heavyweight title. The show is being promoted by Winky Wright Promotions, in association with Thomas Gallagher Productions.

Being the confident young man that he is, Moore expects to defeat Rosada handily. He will then actively campaign to secure the most challenging fights available. There are scores of young guns in his division, and he is eager to fight any of them right now.

They include James Kirkland, 22-0 (14 KOS), of Austin, TX; Alfredo Angulo, 13-0 (10 KOS), a Mexican who resides in California; Ronald Hearns, 18-0 (14 KOS) of Detroit; and New York rivals Pawel Wolak, 21-0 (14 KOS); and Andrey Tsurkan, 26-3 (17 KOS).

“Kirkland and Angulo looked good on HBO After Dark a few weeks ago, so why not put them back on the network with me as the opponent,” said Moore. “I’d be happy to go in there in the role of the opponent because I know what I can do.”

A while back representatives of Hearns inquired about fighting Moore on HBO. When the Moore camp immediately accepted the bout, the Hearns camp expressed no further interest.

“They came to us, we didn’t go to them,” said Harry Keitt, who has trained Moore for his entire career. “When we accepted the fight, they did their research and everyone they talked to said they wouldn’t win.”

Moore is not the type to bash anyone in print, but has no problem bashing them in the ring. He recently returned from Sicily where he helped IBF junior welterweight champion Paul “Magic Man” Malignaggi prepare for his May 24 title defense against Lovemore N’dou. Malignaggi has stated on numerous occasions that Moore might look like a lamb but he is a tiger in the ring.

“He’d knock his mother out in sparring,” said the Magic Man. “Don’t let his (boyish) looks fool you. When he’s in the ring, he’s a different guy, an animal.”

Promoter Tommy Gallagher, who starred in season one of “The Contender” reality television series, says Moore is one of the top prospects in the world. Former heavyweight contender Seamus McDonagh says Moore is the most confident fighter he’s ever met, and HBO judge Harold Lederman said Moore would be ideally matched with either Kirkland or Angulo.

Moore knows how important a victory over Rosada is on June 4, because it will lay the foundation for what he is sure will be a championship reign in the future.

“I’m not one to talk smack about anyone,” said Moore. “I respect all fighters, but I’m 30 years old and I have been wanting to make my move for a long time. No disrespect to Rosada, but I wouldn’t want to be him and have to fight me on Wednesday night.”

The Aviator Sports Complex is located on Flatbush Avenue, just south of the Belt Parkway, Exit 11S, Brooklyn, NY 11234. Doors will open at 6:30 P.M.

For tickets call Gleason’s Gym at 718-797-2872. For tickets and sponsorship opportunities contact Tommy Gallagher at 917-774-3517.
