Jones stops Sheika in 5 rounds Flores decisions Herrera for NABO title Monson, Lashley, Thomas and Hallman MMA winners
PENSACOLA, Fla.-- Fighting at home for the first time in a decade, 8-time world champion Roy Jones, Jr. (53-5, 39 KOs) fought before a packed house of loyal fans and gave them exactly what they came for with a dazzling display of superior quickness and athleticism en route to a fifth-round stoppage of 4-time world title challenger Omar Sheika for the vacant NABO championship last night in Pensacola, Florida.
Jones-Sheika (27-8) headlined tonight’s hybrid pro boxing/mixed-martial-arts show, presented by Jones’ Square Ring Promotions in association with Hirsch Borao Boxing, on pay-per-view live from the Pensacola Civic Center.
The rejuvenated Jones put on another boxing clinic, firing a wide assortment of head and body punches that consistently landed from every conceivable angle from start to finish on the rugged but overmatched Sheika, who simply had no answers for the test given by the future Hall of Fame-bound Jones.
“I want to give thanks to Pensacola in the house,” Jones announced from the center of the ring after the fight. I felt really good. I’m ready. With my father, Coach Merk and my team I’m more comfortable. Do you want me back? (Roy asked the crowd that responded with a thunderous yes). I’ll be coming back.”
In the featured MMA fight of the night, Jeff Monson won a close three-round decision, 29-28 on three cards, in an evenly matched battle between two of the best grapplers in the world. The fight was even going into the final round, in which, Monson’s more effective striking – three clear punches – was the eventual difference.
“I wanted to go on the ground,” Monson commented. “I kept right with him. It was a big win. Roy’s a tough guy.”
Nelson didn’t agree with the final decision. “I got robbed,” he claimed. “It was a boring fight on the ground, but I was controlling the fight and that usually determines the winner. Only in Florida does Roy get robbed (referring to his controversial loss to Andrei Arlovski).”
Unbeaten world-rated B.J. Flores, improving his record to 23-0, captured the vacant NABO junior heavyweight title by a one-sided, unanimous 10-round decision in a workmanlike effort against Colombian knockout artist Jose Luis Herrera (16-6, 16 KOs).
“He’s a veteran with 16 knockouts,” Flores said of Herrera. “By the third or fourth round I knew I could hurt him with some big shots, but I hit him with a left (hurting his hand) in the forehead. I used it early but not later. In the 10th I started to put it together. I went the distance with Herrera and next I want Victor Ramirez (WBO Interim junior heavyweight champion).”
“He was a little faster than me and he moved better,” Herrera agreed with the decision. “I was a little frustrated by him throughout the fight.”
Going into the match with only one round of MMA experience, former WWE star Bobby Lashley was able to win all three rounds against tough veteran Jason Guida, a replacement who took the fight on 1-½ week notice. Guida nearly pulled-off a major upset early in the third round with a guillotine choke, but the powerfully built Lashley was able to pop his head out of the hold.
“I thought I had him,” Guida noted as he shook his head in frustration when the scores were announced.
“He had it on tight and deep,” Lashley remarked. “But I held on and got out. I didn’t use all of my wrestling skills. This is a sport where we’re gentleman and fighters. His talk got to me a little but my corner helped me keep my mind strong. I’m going right back to the training room.”
Feather rweight Din Thomas’ experience and striking advantages resulted in a first-round technical knockout of Gabe Lemley at 4:13 of the first round. Thomas’ series of powerful strikes led Lemley to try and shoot underneath Thomas (23-8), who countered with a picture perfect Muay Thai-knee, sending Lemley down, face first, as the referee immediately halted the action due to the force of the impact.
“Yeah,” Thomas explained, “I set him up with my punches. I had a lot of fun here; I love Pensacola. Boxing is a major part of MMA and was glad to be part of this (boxing/MA event). I took advantage of my experience. I can fight in a cage, ring or parking lot – I don’t care.”
Sixty-three fight MMA veteran Dennis “Superman” Hallman (49-12-2) didn’t miss a beat despite having his first fight in 16 months as he locked-in a rear naked choke from the back, forcing welterweight Danny Ruiz to tap-out at 1:50 of the opening round.
“I guess the layoff didn’t hurt,” Hallman said after the fight. “It took a few seconds for me to get going, but once he hit me I knew I was in a fight and got going.”

No Holds Barred: NCAA Wrestling Recap with Bob Mayeri, and Sengoku 7 Review

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman discusses two events which were held this past weekend which showcased some of the best aspects of the combat sports.
We begin by discussing the Sengoku 7 mixed martial arts card, which was held in Tokyo, Japan, Friday, March 20. Among the featured fights was the fourth straight win in the young professional career of three-time U.S. national freestyle wrestling champion King Mo Lawal. Despite several injuries, he dominated his fight and won a three-round unanimous decision over Ryo Kawamura, who is also the light heavyweight King of Pancrase. The first round of the Sengoku featherweight tournament was highlighted by the submission clinic put on another rising star, Hatsu Hioki, who defeated Chris Manuel by an arm bar submission in the first round of their fight. There were several other good fights on this card as well, which overall displayed a very high level of technique for mixed martial arts.
The 2009 NCAA Div. I Wrestling Championships are now in the books, and this event, held March 19-21 in St. Louis, proved to be one of the most exciting, evenly-matched, and important of its kind. While Iowa won their second straight national team title, they had no individual champions. Instead, wrestlers from ten different schools won these honors in the ten weight classes contested in college wrestling. One of the most historic upsets took place in 149-pound finals, as Darrion Caldwell of North Carolina State dominated the top-seeded and unbeaten Brent Metcalf of Iowa, 11-6. We also discuss the incredible story of Anthony Robles, the Arizona State wrestler who was born with only one leg, and placed fourth in the nation at 125 pounds in this tournament to win All-American status.
We discuss this amazing tournament, and what it all means for wrestling, with our correspondent Bob Mayeri, who was matside in St. Louis for this event.

We also discuss the mainstream media, especially in America, their abject failure in covering the combat sports, and the need to support independent media. In February ‘08 legendary Heavyweight boxing champion of the world Smokin’Joe Frazier simply said “She’s going to be the Champ.” and his son former Heavyweight contender Marvis said "Marianne is the hardest working(training), committed fighters I have seen in a long time. She's very hard for any fighter to deal with. She's strong, fast and accurate, has lots ofcombinations and punches hard, so hard it's like being hit by a Heavyweight." In April ‘08 Jnr. Middleweight world champion Robert ‘Bam Bam’ Hines said “Marianne’s an exciting fighter who’s got it all. One thing for sure she’s going to be the Champ...soon.” Then in November ‘08 IBF Cruiserweight Champion Steve ‘USS’ Cunningham was so impressed with her that he invited her to be part of his team. Now after various well publicised false starts Philadelphia based English Bantamweight Marianne ‘Golden Girl’ Marston, who was originally brought to America by the legendary Heavyweight Champion of the World Smokin’ Joe Frazier in a blaze of publicity, will finally have her long awaited debut,virtually one whole year later than planned, on the undercard of Brian Cohen’s WBO Light Heavyweight title fight in South Philadelphia on the 9th May 2009. In February ‘08 Marianne took the huge step of traveling thousands ofmiles from her home in London, England to Philadelphia to train full time under the personal tutelage of Smokin’ Joe Frazier and his son Marvis at their North Philadelphia landmark gym after Frazier had advised her tospend six months training with him so he could get her fully prepared forher debut.

The proceeds from this event will help expand youth activities, which will be housed in the new Kronk Gym.
Since its founding in 1969, the Kronk Gym has provided a recreational outlet for many youngsters in the metropolitan Detroit area. Through the coaching and guidance they received, some of these youths went on to become world-class athletes. More of them became world-class citizens.
To perpetuate this legacy, Emanuel Steward created the Kronk Gym Foundation this year, a nonprofit organization committed to making a difference in the well-being of youth through character-building, education and recreation. The program's goal is to provide recreational facilities, in addition to mentoring and tutoring, for the overall development of youth in Metro Detroit.
Emanuel Steward says, "For many youngsters who have unfortunate home lives, the Kronk Gym and its programs are crucial.
"They are the difference between a life on the streets and a life of accomplishment."
Special awards will be given to people who have shown the caring side of the boxing and sporting worlds. Among the recipients will be Sugar Ray Leonard, Detroit's own Thomas Hearns, Don Barden, former Michigan Boxing Commissioner and boxing humanitarian Dr. Stuart Kirschenbaum, long-time Kronk supporter Sam Lafata, among others.
The live auction will feature items sure to turn the head of boxing fans: Many one of a kind items and several pairs of autographed boxing gloves signed by Oscar De La Hoya, Manny Pacquaio, Wladimir Klitschko and other world class champions. There will also be priceless experiences to bid upon.
Honorary chairs for the event are the current Heavyweight Champion of the World Wladimir Klitschko and former Heavyweight Champion Lennox Lewis.

CES Signs James McGirt, Jr.
PROVIDENCE– Jimmy Burchfield’s Classic Entertainment and Sports, Inc. (CES) announced today that it has signed super middleweight prospect James McGirt, Jr. to an exclusive, multi-year promotional contract.
The 26-year-old McGirt (19-2-1, 9 KOs), born in Brentwood, New York and now fighting out of Vero Beach (FL), is scheduled to make his CES debut on “River Rage” on May 22 at Twin River Event Center in Lincoln, Rhode Island. James is trained by his father, James “Buddy” McGirt, 2-time world champion and former Trainer of the Year
“CES doesn’t give-up on fighters after a loss as long as he has learned from a set-back and shown me he still has fire burning in his stomach to be a world champion,” Burchfield said. “We build champions and give personalized care to all of our fighters. I remember Scotty Pemberton getting knocked out by Hector Sanjurjo. We didn’t give up on Pemberton and he came back to be the No. 1 contender in the world and fought for the world title. It’s not always about the money; it’s about getting the job done.
“My reputation and word is my bond. James’ father Buddy was a champion – he’ll always be a champion – and he’s trained a lot of world champions. We are going to work together as a team to make James a world champion. He’s a very gifted boxer with a great pedigree. CES is a supportive team and everyone is delighted to add a talent like James to our growing stable that includes world-class fighters like Matt Godfrey, Jason Estrada and Joey Spina.”
Growing up, James used his natural athletic ability to play basketball, a sport he believes he’d be playing professionally somewhere today if he hadn’t given it up to box. McGirt’s tremendous quickness and athleticism was good enough for James, Jr. to earn a basketball scholarship to St. Petersburg Junior College, but boxing flowed through his veins and he decided to pursue boxing on a fulltime basis.
Off the hardcourt and into the four-cornered ring, James had a solid 44-4 amateur record, including gold medal performances in the Sunshine State Games and Southeast Regional, in addition to reaching the quarterfinals of the U.S. Championships twice and semifinals of the National PALs.
“My last name is a big part of me and my career,” James remarked. “I’m Buddy’s son. It’s in the genes. He was a great fighter and he’s one of the hottest trainers in boxing today. I’ve gained a lot of experience just being his son. The pressure is always going to be there because of who I am. I’ve been around this sport a long time and I know expectations are high.
“I’m very excited to get back in the ring. It’s been too long. I’ve heard a lot of good things about Mr. Burchfield and I’m grateful to him for giving me this great opportunity. I’m going back up to super middleweight. I had nothing left, no life after three rounds, at 160. I’m in the process of moving back up to 168, but we’re not jumping right up. This fight will be at around 164-165. I want to be a world champion.”
McGirt’s opponents always bring their A game, trying to defeat James and his famous father, which has often proven to be dangerous for James. “Yeah,” Buddy agreed, “but we have to let James’ action do the talking. Peter Taking the Hard Way Back to the Title
Former WBC Heavyweight Champion Samuel Peter (32-2, 23 KOs) is a man of his word.
After losing his title to Vitali Klitschko last October in Germany, the powerful slugger vowed to redeem himself by taking on the best the division has to offer on his road back to the top.
And to prove he means what he says, Peter will jump right back into the thick of it against once-beaten and IBF #3 rated "Fast" Eddie Chambers (33-1, 18 KOs) on March 27 at the Nokia Theater in Downtown Los Angeles, California, and televised live on ESPN2 "Friday Night Fights".
"Samuel Peter has decided not to play safe for even one fight. Who else in the heavyweight division would choose an opponent like Eddie Chambers for his first fight back since losing the title?" asked Peter's promoter, Dino Duva of Duva Boxing. "Eddie Chambers has only lost once in his career in a respectable performance against Alexander Povetkin. And he has beaten Calvin Brock, Derric Rossy and Dominick Guinn among his 33 wins. "
Chambers, 3-0 against solid opposition since the Povetkin fight, has a slick style and busy jab that could present problems for Peter. "This is hardly a tune-up fight for Samuel," Duva continued. "Eddie Chambers is #3 in the IBF; Samuel is #5. The winner of this matchup will almost surely move very close to a mandatory title shot."
Having proclaimed his mission to bring excitement to heavyweight boxing since early in his career, Peter has never shied away from big matchups. In addition to facing both Klitschko brothers, "The Nigerian Nightmare" sought out James Toney and beat him (twice) and knocked out Oleg Maskaev to win the title.
"Samuel had a terrible night against Vitali and he's sworn to himself and his fans to make up for it by only taking meaningful fights against top opponents. Eddie Chambers has tremendous hand speed and technique and he makes for a very intriguing match. I commend Samuel for choosing to come back against one of the world's top contenders this way. TEAM BRUNELLI THROWS DOWN THE GAUNTLET AND PREDICTS VICTORY OVER NAKASH ON APRIL 3RD AT THE LEGENDARY BLUE HORIZON
PHILADELPHIA)— In a recent interview with www.phillykeith.com, cruiserweight Dave Brunelli along with his ubiquitous manager Mike Murphy guaranteed that Brunelli would be the first man to defeat undefeated Isreali Cruiserweight sensation, Ran Nakash on April 3rd at The Legendary Blue Horizon.
The card is promoted by Vernoca L. Michael and Blue Horizon Boxing Promotions Inc.
Brunelli, of Northeast Philadelphia has a record of 8-4 with three knockouts and is moving down to cruiserweight to take on one of the hottest fighters around.
Brunelli and his team are unfazed about the record and as a matter of fact they believe his record is extremely padded.
“I don’t understand why I am the underdog”, said Brunelli.
“He hasn’t fought anyone.”
Murphy went on to tell www.phillykeith.com, “We love being the opponent and Nakash will feel the power.”
“I’ll be damned if I let a guy from Israel take over the Blue Horizon and on April 3rd the “0” must go.”
On April 3rd the talking will stop and this bout has all the making of some of the great ethnic boxing matches of the past when fights between Jewish and Italian fighters were very common.
If that isn’t enough a packed has been put together and an old school Philly Turf war will take place as Tyric “Too Sweet” Robinson takes on Julius “Marvel” Edmonds in an eight round Jr. Welterweight bout.
Robinson, who is a corrections officer, has a record of 9-3-1 with three knockouts and is coming off an eight round unanimous decision loss to the undefeated Jason Cintron on October 17th at The Legendary Blue Horizon.
Edmonds has a deceiving record of 4-3 but his tough as nails style has endeared him to Philly fight fans early in his career.
Edmonds is always in his opponents face and has won two in a row which includes his last outing in which he scored a six round unanimous decision over then undefeated Linwood Hurd on February 6th at The Legendary Blue Horizon.
Also seiing action on April 3rd will be Legendary Blue Horizon favorite, middleweight Gee Cullmer.
Cullmer, 15-1 with three knockouts will fight in an eight round bout against an opponent to be named shortly.
In Cullmer’s last fight on September 12th, he engaged an in eight round war with Jameel Wilson for which Cullmer walked away with the split decision in what many are calling the “2008 Philly Fight of the Year.”
In a six round Super Featherweight bout, Joselito Collado of Queens, New York returns to The Legendary Blue Horizon when he takes on Jason Rorie in a bout scheduled for four rounds.
Collado, 6-0 with two knockouts has one Legendary Blue Horizon appearance that took place last October 3rd where he won a unanimous decision over David Orosco in a bout that was a toe to toe war over four rounds.
Rorie, 2-2-1 with one knockout was able to stop Cano two bouts ago. In his last bout, The Winston-Salem, North Carolina native fought to a six round draw with Juan Nazario (6-1) on February 27th.
Marcus Bioncani will be back at The Legendary Blue Horizon as he will risk undefeated (3-0, 3KO’s) record when he takes on debuting Archambo Tuba of Israel.
Bianconi of Houston, Texas surprised some when he made his Legendary Blue Horizon debut when he scored a second round stoppage over John Turner. Since then, Bianconi scored a first round destruction over Nelson Roldan on February 25th in Lyndhurst, NJ.
Hot welterweight prospect Ronald Cruz of Bethlehem, PA will look to stay undefeated in a four round welterweight bout when he takes on an opponent the be named.
In his most recent outing, Cruz (3-0, 2 KO’s) scored one of the most vicious one-punch knockouts when he nearly decapitated Russell Cloak in one round on March 13th.
In a four round bout, Taneal Goyco (1-0, 1 KO) will battle Davit Davitashvili in a battle of Philadelphia-based Cruiserweights.

Brunelli, of Northeast Philadelphia has a record of 8-4 with three knockouts and is moving down to cruiserweight to take on one of the hottest fighters around.
Brunelli and his team are unfazed about the record and as a matter of fact they believe his record is extremely padded.
“I don’t understand why I am the underdog”, said Brunelli.
“He hasn’t fought anyone.”

“I’ll be damned if I let a guy from Israel take over the Blue Horizon and on April 3rd the “0” must go.”
On April 3rd the talking will stop and this bout has all the making of some of the great ethnic boxing matches of the past when fights between Jewish and Italian fighters were very common.
If that isn’t enough a packed has been put together and an old school Philly Turf war will take place as Tyric “Too Sweet” Robinson takes on Julius “Marvel” Edmonds in an eight round Jr. Welterweight bout.
Robinson, who is a corrections officer, has a record of 9-3-1 with three knockouts and is coming off an eight round unanimous decision loss to the undefeated Jason Cintron on October 17th at The Legendary Blue Horizon.
Edmonds has a deceiving record of 4-3 but his tough as nails style has endeared him to Philly fight fans early in his career.
Edmonds is always in his opponents face and has won two in a row which includes his last outing in which he scored a six round unanimous decision over then undefeated Linwood Hurd on February 6th at The Legendary Blue Horizon.
Also seiing action on April 3rd will be Legendary Blue Horizon favorite, middleweight Gee Cullmer.
Cullmer, 15-1 with three knockouts will fight in an eight round bout against an opponent to be named shortly.
In Cullmer’s last fight on September 12th, he engaged an in eight round war with Jameel Wilson for which Cullmer walked away with the split decision in what many are calling the “2008 Philly Fight of the Year.”
In a six round Super Featherweight bout, Joselito Collado of Queens, New York returns to The Legendary Blue Horizon when he takes on Jason Rorie in a bout scheduled for four rounds.
Collado, 6-0 with two knockouts has one Legendary Blue Horizon appearance that took place last October 3rd where he won a unanimous decision over David Orosco in a bout that was a toe to toe war over four rounds.
Rorie, 2-2-1 with one knockout was able to stop Cano two bouts ago. In his last bout, The Winston-Salem, North Carolina native fought to a six round draw with Juan Nazario (6-1) on February 27th.
Marcus Bioncani will be back at The Legendary Blue Horizon as he will risk undefeated (3-0, 3KO’s) record when he takes on debuting Archambo Tuba of Israel.
Bianconi of Houston, Texas surprised some when he made his Legendary Blue Horizon debut when he scored a second round stoppage over John Turner. Since then, Bianconi scored a first round destruction over Nelson Roldan on February 25th in Lyndhurst, NJ.
Hot welterweight prospect Ronald Cruz of Bethlehem, PA will look to stay undefeated in a four round welterweight bout when he takes on an opponent the be named.
In his most recent outing, Cruz (3-0, 2 KO’s) scored one of the most vicious one-punch knockouts when he nearly decapitated Russell Cloak in one round on March 13th.
In a four round bout, Taneal Goyco (1-0, 1 KO) will battle Davit Davitashvili in a battle of Philadelphia-based Cruiserweights.
Derrick Bivins of Philadelphia (1-0-1) will take on an opponent to be named in a scheduled four round Super Featherweight bout

Figueroa gets shot against Bailey in April 3 IBF title eliminator
NEW YORK– NABF light welterweight champion Frankie “El Gato” Figueroa (20-2, 13 KOs), now known as Gato Figueroa, gets the opportunity that he’s worked hard for on April 3 when he takes on former WBO light welterweight champion Randall Bailey (38-6, 34 KOs) in an IBF title eliminator.
The winner between IBF No. 3 rated Bailey (No. 1 and 2 are unrated) and No. 6 ranked Figueroa, shown live on ESPN from Memphis, will earn a title shot against IBF champion Juan Urango.
“This is a phenomenal opportunity for me and I’m very happy that the fight has been made,” Figueroa said from his Miami-based training camp. “I want to thank my promoter, Square Ring and its CEO, John Wirt, and my manager, Sal LoNano, for making this happen. Nothing is going to stop me from winning this fight. I’ve been training hard, first at Mike Boyle’s (Training and Conditioning in Winchester, MA), and now in Miami with my former head trainer, Eggie Martinez, who is back in my corner. I can already tell the difference in my strength and conditioning. My sparring partners tell me I’m faster and have more pop. That’s all I needed to hear.”
Bailey has more experience than Figueroa, who has a 12-fight win streak dating back to 2004, having defeated the likes of Demarcus Corley, Carlos Gonzalez, Hector Lopez, Rudy Martinez and DeMetrio Ceballos. Bailey’s a knockout-artist who has stopped 34 of 38 victims, but Figueroa has never been knocked out as a pro. The 34-year old Bailey, 3-4 in world title fights, has been knocked out twice by Miguel Cotto and Diosbelys Hurtado. Randall lost a split decision in a 2007 IBF title eliminator to Herman Ngoudjo.
“Bailey has had his time but now it’s Gato time,” Figueroa added. “Bailey’s a great fighter. I’m not going to slam him; I’m preparing for him and will do my talking in the ring. I’m not looking past Bailey, but I am thinking about Urango because my goal is to be world champion. In order to achieve that, I have to get past Bailey to get a title shot against Urango.”
Figueroa is also rated No. 11 by the WBC and No. 14 by the WBA. The 30-year-old Puerto Rican-American was born in Spanish Harlem, where Frankie was a 2-time New York City high school wrestling champion (14-0 as a senior). He was nicknamed, “El Gato” (The Cat), because he was the only one quick enough to catch a cat that was a mascot at his original gym in the Bronx.

Jones-Sheika headlines boxing/MMA PPV show March 21in Pensacola
PENSACOLA, Fla.– Square Ring Promotions officials announced this morning that, despite the reported CSAC (California State Athletic Commission) suspension of Ken Shamrock, its March 21 pro boxing/MMA pay-per-view event will be held as scheduled at the Pensacola Civic Center.
Eight-time world boxing champion Roy Jones, Jr. (52-5, 38 KOs) takes on 4-time world title challenger Omar Sheika (27-8, 18 KOs) in the main event on the hybrid show, presented by Square Ring Promotions, in association with Hirsch Borao Boxing and the Pensacola Civic Center.
“The show will go on,” Square Ring Promotions CEO John Wirt stated. “Ken said he was taking over-the-counter products and has requested an expedited appeal. We’re working with his group but, just in case, we are also looking for a possible replacement to fight Bobby Lashley. We have indentified some great replacements for Shamrock and have been in contact with them. A press release will be issued very soon as to which direction we will be going.”
The unique pro boxing/MMA show is being distributed by Square Ring Promotions, Inc. at 9:00PM ET/6:00PM PT in North America on cable and satellite via iNDemand, TVN,

We had a chance on a recent media conference call to get comments from both Khan and Barrera. And we also comment on this glut of pay-per-views, and what it means, and doesn't mean, for boxing. Finally, we comment on the efforts to market and position the boxing shows on Showtime. Despite showing many excellent fights, Showtime is way behind their premium cable network rival, HBO, in popularity. We discuss some of the reasons why, in particular their failure to use the Internet and the Internet boxing media properly and effectively, and the almost total absence of the use of social media for their boxing program. NEW YORK– Even during these challenging economic times, there’s still nothing like a night out - complete with world championship boxing. On Saturday, April 25, DiBella Entertainment in association with Hennessy Sports and MGM Grand at Foxwoods will scale the fantastic MGM Grand Theater with affordable-only ticket prices as fans will get to truly enjoy the highly anticipated WBC super middleweight world championship bout between Britain’s Carl Froch and former undisputed middleweight king Jermain Taylor.
“I love this sport and boxing fans in the live audience is what really makes the atmosphere exciting. We’re not going to let the bad economy take away from what promises to be a great championship fight between Carl Froch and Jermain Taylor. With ringside seats available for just $200, the MGM Grand Theater is the place to be on April 25,” said DBE president Lou DiBella.
Starting at $50…to an unprecedented $200 for ringside tickets, fans can check out WBC 168 lbs. world champion Froch (24-0, 19 KOs), from Nottingham, England, take on # 1 rated challenger Taylor (28-2-1, 17 KOs), of Little Rock, Arkansas, in what experts are predicting will be an all-action slugfest.

Froch, 31, will be making just his second appearance in the United States. In April 2005, Froch TKO’d Henry Porros in Hollywood, CA, but otherwise has fought exclusively in the UK. Nicknamed “The Cobra,” Froch claimed the vacant WBC world championship this past December via unanimous decision over Jean Pascal in the champion’s hometown of Nottingham.
The 30-year-old Taylor shocked the boxing world in July 2005 – dethroning long-reigning undisputed middleweight champion Bernard Hopkins, followed by four successful title defenses. Most recently, “Bad Intentions” Taylor secured his WBC mandatory challenger status with a one-sided beating of former IBF 168 lbs. world champion Jeff Lacy on November 15 in Nashville, TN.

John Duddy and Patrick Farrell show their Irish spirit
Irish-American fighters, John Duddy and Patrick Farrell will participate in local New Jersey St. Patrick’s Day parades this weekend to celebrate their Irish heritage and to promote their upcoming Friday, April 24th “Main Event Boxing Series” fights at Prudential Center in Newark.
The undefeated Duddy will participate in New Jersey’s oldest and biggest annual St. Patrick’s Day celebration in West Orange, New Jersey on Sunday. He will ride in the spectacular parade, which begins at 12:00 pm, and then visit a number of local St. Patrick’s events.
Patrick Farrell will show his Irish spirit as part of Newark’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade on Friday, March 13. The parade route begins 1:00pm at Mulberry and Lafayette. Fans also can catch Patrick Farrell in Jersey City’s parade on Sunday at 12:30pm.
The Friday, April 24th boxing show will feature a spectacular night of boxing rich in Irish heritage! The show starts at 8 PM. In addition, beginning at 6 PM, there will be a huge Irish street festival right outside the arena featuring lots of Irish beer, food and music. Luck of the Irish for Danny O’Connor; Fighting Saturday night in Boston
FRAMINGHAM, Mass.– No sooner had the announcement been made that the March 16th “Erin Go Brawl II” show in New York City was canceled, Seminole Warriors Boxing informed its prize light welterweight, Danny O’Connor, of his repositioning on a show this Saturday night in Boston.
The National Guard Armory in Dorchester (70 Liberty Ave.) isn’t a long drive for family, friends and fans from Framingham to watch O’Connor (4-0, 1 KO), 2008 U.S. Olympic first alternate, fight live against Charlie Wade (4-7, 1 KO).
O’Connor is coming off of his impressive national television debut January 30, winning a 4-round decision in the opening bout on ESPN’s Friday Night Fights against light welterweight Jamar Saunders (2-1-1, 1 KO) at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Florida.
“I was disappointed when I first heard that the show at Madison Square Garden had been canceled,” O’Connor said. “I think every time I’m supposed to fight in New York something happens. This is the second time but I believe everything happens for a reason and this got me in a card in Boston. I’m so happy. It’s amazing. Now everybody from home can come watch me fight live. They wanted me on ESPN my last fight and now they can see me in person. I can’t imagine how I’ll feel when I walk into the ring with everybody there cheering for me.
“My ESPN fight was huge because a lot of people got to watch me fight for the first time. It helped build my fan-base. It was also a step-up against a tough kid. I’m a pro. This is what I do – fight! I turned in a solid performance but I’m also a perfectionist who thinks I can always do better. It was only my fourth pro fight and was another part of my learning process. I leaned a lot last fight and we’ve bee working to improve some things that I’ll bring into this fight in Boston. I want to stay busy and learn something new every fight.”
The 23-year-old O’Connor won last year’s US Future Stars National Championship, in which, he was named Most Outstanding Boxer, as well as the 2008 National Golden Gloves Tournament. The highlight of Danny’s amateur career was defeating eventual 2008 Olympic Gold medalist Felix Diaz, of the Dominican Republic, last May in a USA-Dominican Republic dual meet.
“We were very happy with Danny’s last fight against a legitimate, young fighter,” O’Connor’s head trainer and co-manager David Keefe remarked. “He used his jab very well and showed excellent speed and good overall boxing skills. We’re very happy to have Danny boxing in Boston. We accepted the opportunity right after we learned about the New York showing being canceled. This was our next best choice and we hope Danny will be fighting at Madison Square Garden in the future. When (co-manager) Rob (Valle) and I were looking for a promoter, we had a game plan for Danny to stay busy. We didn’t want only five fights a year. We believe it’s very important for a young, up-and-comer like Danny to fight a lot. It’s been that way since the first day we met Leon (Margules, Executive Director, Seminole Warriors Boxing).”
