Jesus Rodriguez vs. Devon Alexander in St. Louis
ST. LOUIS—Jesus “Chuy” Rodriguez, a winner in 11 of his last 12 matches, signed a contract today to face undefeated World Boxing Council No. 1-ranked super lightweight Devon Alexander “The Great” on Friday, April 24 at Scottrade Center in St. Louis and on SHOWTIME®.
Alexander (17-0, 10 KOs) is the Gateway City’s fastest-rising star, and Rodriguez (19-3, 5 KOs), from Salinas, Calif., will look to give him a stiff test in a match scheduled for 10 rounds.
The main event will feature two more St. Louisans battling for the vacant International Boxing Federation junior middleweight championship when former four-time world champion Cory “The Next Generation” Spinks (36-5, 11 KOs) meets IBF No. 6-ranked contender Deandre “The Bull” Latimore (19-1, 16 KOs).
Both fights will be televised on ShoBox: The New Generation live on SHOWTIME beginning at 11 p.m. ET/PT (10 p.m. CT, delayed on the West Coast). A full undercard will be presented. Doors open at 6 p.m.
The event is promoted by Don King Productions with Spinks vs. Latimore presented in association with Rumble Time Promotions and DiBella Entertainment.
Alexander, a 22-year-old phenom trained and managed by Kevin Cunningham, was recently named mandatory challenger to the WBC 140-pound champion Timothy “Desert Storm” Bradley, so he has his first world championship match riding on this fight.

Bradley added the World Boxing Organization 140-pound title to his resume by defeating then-champion Kendall Holt on April 4, also on SHOWTIME, which means Alexander will next face a unified world champion if he can get past Rodriguez.
“A world championship fight is what I have been working towards my whole life,” Alexander said. “To earn that chance in front of my hometown fans in St. Louis would mean a lot to me.”
Alexander’s promoter Don King sees a bright future for this budding star.
“Devon Alexander has all the skills to become a world champion and he’s going to earn his first title shot by defeating Jesus Rodriguez in St. Louis on April 24,” King said. “Not only is Devon a great fighter but he’s an outstanding individual, a young man the people of St. Louis can be proud of.”
Rodriguez’s three losses have all come against undefeated fighters. He lost his debut against a fighter also making his first appearance in 1999 and against two fighters who remain undefeated: Vladimir Zykov, who had 15 wins when he faced Rodriguez in 2006, and Mike Alvarado, who had 19 wins when Rodriguez dropped a 10-round decision when they met on Feb. 15, 2008.
It should be noted that Rodriguez defeated Omri Lowther, a highly decorated amateur who was undefeated in nine fights as a professional when they met in 2007. Rodriguez won an eight-round unanimous decision.

Manfredo stops Smichet in 7th
MONTREAL– Former world title challenger Peter Manfredo, Jr. knocked out tough Tunisian veteran Walid “Tempete de Sable” Smichet in the seventh round of today’s scheduled 10-round co-feature at Montreal Casino
The 28-year-old Manfredo (32-6, 16 KOs), star of The Contender, Season I, got his career back on the right track with a strong performance against Smichet (20-6-3, 14 KOs), who had been knocked out only once in 28 prior pro fights, by Renan St. Juste in 2006. Manfredo accomplished what neither unbeaten world title contender John Duddy nor Canadian middleweight champion Sebastien Demers had been able to do in their 10 and 12 round fights, respectively, against Smichet.
“It was a nice win and good confidence builder,” Manfredo remarked. “I hurt him in the third and after that I knew I could hurt him anytime. He was tough, though, and came back fighting. I hurt him again in the sixth and knew that it was only a matter of time. I was bigger, stronger and better than him and proved it today, not only to the fans, but to myself. I’m a top-level performer who only had three weeks to get ready for this fight. I’m coming down to middleweight and I want Duddy. Today, I did what he couldn’t do and plan on being ringside Friday night (vs. Billy Lyell in Newark, NJ) for his fight.”
Manfredo recently reunited with his original promoter, Jimmy Burchfield (Classic Entertainment and Sports, Inc., who said after the fight, “What a victory! A war, back-and-forth action, but Peter boxed beautifully and stuck with his game plan. He hurt Smichet a number of times, picking him apart, throughout the fight. It was a devastating punch; knockout of the year candidate.”
Manfredo floored Smichet in the third, staggered in the sixth, and put him to sleep with a vicious left hook at the end of the seventh.
“A great win,” Manfredo’s manager Larry Army added. “We couldn’t be happier with his comeback fight. The middleweight division is ripe for Peter’s pickings.”

ST. LOUIS—The three best boxers in St. Louis will be showcased on the same Don King-promoted fight card at Scottrade Center on Friday, April 24.
The main event will feature the long-awaited hometown showdown for the vacant International Boxing Federation junior middleweight championship between former four-time world champion Cory “The Next Generation” Spinks (36-5, 11 KOs) taking on IBF No. 6-ranked contender Deandre “The Bull” Latimore (19-1, 16 KOs).

“I love St. Louis and I’m happy to have the top three prizefighters from this great American city on the same card at Scottrade Center,” King said. “Spring is almost here so it’s the perfect time to meet me in St. Louis on April 24 to see the best of the old and best of the new. It's going to be what we call a Lou thing.”

Spinks, 31, is a former undisputed welterweight champion who also held the IBF junior middleweight championship, a crown he won in St. Louis on July 8, 2006, by winning a majority decision over then-champion Roman “Made in Hell” Karmazin.
Spinks lost that title at Scottrade Center on March 27, 2008, dropping a split decision to Verno Phillips after making the decision to split with his longtime trainer and manager Kevin Cunningham. Spinks and Cunningham have since reconciled and are working together again, and Phillips has vacated the title to move up to the middleweight division. Spinks thinks he will regain the title because his vast world championship experience will be too much for his 23-year-old cross-town rival.
“Deandre faced my stablemate Devon Alexander in the amateurs when they were both coming up,” Spinks said. “My question to Deandre is who have you faced? The first time he met a guy with a winning record, Ian Gardner knocked him out in three. He stopped Sechew Powell in his last fight but he’s not ready for me yet.”
Latimore, 23, met Powell in the biggest fight of his young career during his most-recent appearance on June 11 at the Hard Rock Times Square in New York. Powell had earned the IBF’s No. 1 ranking in the junior middleweight division and was mandatory challenger to face the newly crowned champion Phillips but decided to face Latimore first.
The match was competitive until the seventh round when Latimore broke through, hurting Powell with a right hook. Latimore rocked Powell again with an uppercut before pinning him in a corner. Powell’s lack of an appropriate response led the referee to halt the contest in a major upset victory for Latimore.
Latimore co-promoter Lou DiBella, president of DiBella Entertainment, is looking forward to the event.
“It is an honor to work on this show with Don King, as well as co-promote boxing’s next great young champion, Deandre Latimore, with our partner Rumble Time Promotions,” DiBella said. “The Battle of St. Lou will guarantee high drama.”

Spinks won his first world title by defeating Michele Piccirillo in 2003 to become the IBF welterweight champion. He added the World Boxing Council and World Boxing Association 147-pound titles by defeating Ricardo “El Matador” Mayorga later that year.
After successfully defending his crowns with a unanimous decision win over Zab “Super” Judah in a seesaw affair in 2004 that saw both fighters hitting the canvas, Spinks agreed to a rematch with Judah in front of a record crowd of 22,370 in his hometown on Feb. 5, 2005. Judah scored a technical knockout in round nine to spoil Spinks’s homecoming.
After moving up to 154 pounds and becoming world champion again, Spinks took a one-time gamble at 160 pounds to challenge then-World Boxing Council and -World Boxing Organization middleweight champion Jermain “Bad Intentions” Taylor at the FedEx Forum in Memphis on May 19, 2007.

Both fights will be televised on ShoBox: The New Generation live on SHOWTIME beginning at 11 p.m. ET/PT (10 p.m. CT, delayed on the West Coast). A full undercard will be presented. Doors open at 6 p.m.
“I love St. Louis and I’m happy to have the top three prizefighters from this great American city on the same card at Scottrade Center,” King said. “Spring is almost here so it’s the perfect time to meet me in St. Louis on April 24 to see the best of the old and best of the new. It's going to be what we call a Lou thing.”
The event is promoted by Don King Productions with Spinks vs. Latimore presented in association with Rumble Time Promotions and DiBella Entertainment.
Spinks, 31, is a former undisputed welterweight champion who also held the IBF junior middleweight championship, a crown he won in St. Louis on July 8, 2006, by winning a majority decision over then-champion Roman “Made in Hell” Karmazin.
Spinks lost that title at Scottrade Center on March 27, 2008, dropping a split decision to Verno Phillips after making the decision to split with his longtime trainer and manager Kevin Cunningham. Spinks and Cunningham have since reconciled and are working together again, and Phillips has vacated the title to move up to the middleweight division. Spinks thinks he will regain the title because his vast world championship experience will be too much for his 23-year-old cross-town rival.
“Deandre faced my stablemate Devon Alexander in the amateurs when they were both coming up,” Spinks said. “My question to Deandre is who have you faced? The first time he met a guy with a winning record, Ian Gardner knocked him out in three. He stopped Sechew Powell in his last fight but he’s not ready for me yet.”
Latimore, 23, met Powell in the biggest fight of his young career during his most-recent appearance on June 11 at the Hard Rock Times Square in New York. Powell had earned the IBF’s No. 1 ranking in the junior middleweight division and was mandatory challenger to face the newly crowned champion Phillips but decided to face Latimore first.
The match was competitive until the seventh round when Latimore broke through, hurting Powell with a right hook. Latimore rocked Powell again with an uppercut before pinning him in a corner. Powell’s lack of an appropriate response led the referee to halt the contest in a major upset victory for Latimore.
Latimore co-promoter Lou DiBella, president of DiBella Entertainment, is looking forward to the event.
“It is an honor to work on this show with Don King, as well as co-promote boxing’s next great young champion, Deandre Latimore, with our partner Rumble Time Promotions,” DiBella said. “The Battle of St. Lou will guarantee high drama.”
Alexander, a 22-year-old phenom who is also trained by Cunningham, was recently named mandatory challenger to the WBC 140-pound champion, so he has his first world championship match riding on this fight.
“A world championship fight is what I have been working towards my whole life,” Alexander said. “To earn that chance in front of my hometown fans in St. Louis would mean a lot to me.”
Spinks won his first world title by defeating Michele Piccirillo in 2003 to become the IBF welterweight champion. He added the World Boxing Council and World Boxing Association 147-pound titles by defeating Ricardo “El Matador” Mayorga later that year.
After successfully defending his crowns with a unanimous decision win over Zab “Super” Judah in a seesaw affair in 2004 that saw both fighters hitting the canvas, Spinks agreed to a rematch with Judah in front of a record crowd of 22,370 in his hometown on Feb. 5, 2005. Judah scored a technical knockout in round nine to spoil Spinks’s homecoming.
After moving up to 154 pounds and becoming world champion again, Spinks took a one-time gamble at 160 pounds to challenge then-World Boxing Council and -World Boxing Organization middleweight champion Jermain “Bad Intentions” Taylor at the FedEx Forum in Memphis on May 19, 2007.

Bruce ‘Lionheart’ Scott Fires Salvo At Prizefighter 7 - The Cruiserweights - Press Conference

Bruce ‘Lionheart’ Scott, along with six of his fellow seven contestants in
Prizefighter 7 - The Cruiserweights tournament, that takes place at Earls
Court on Tuesday 19th May 2009, were all together for the first time in
one place when they attended a press conference held by the promoter of
the series, Barry Hearn of Matchroom Sports, aboard HMS Belfast moored on
the River Thames close to the iconic Tower Bridge in London.
Bruce’s six fellow combatants, all former champions, as is the seventh,
Mark Krence (who failed to make the press conference having had the
misfortune of being stuck in a traffic jam on the infamous “car park”
laughingly called the M1 Motorway) were Commonwealth Champion Darren
Corbett (27-4-1), British and European Champion Terry Dunstan (20-2),
British, Commonwealth and European Light Heavyweight Champion Dean Francis
(30-3-1), British Champion John ‘Buster’ Keeton (26-16), British and
Commonwealth Light Heavyweight Champion Neil Simpson (26-18-1) and British
Southern Area Champion Micky Steeds (12-4).
The proceedings were entertainingly opened by Barry Hearn, Chairman of
Matchroom Sports, who praised the fighters sat each side of him before
saying “Boxing in some ways has lost its way and gone a bit stale.
Prizefighter tries to turn the situation around by making it very easy to
understand. Eight great fighters, eight former champions coming together
for seven fights in one night.
One thing about Prizefighter is it’s exciting; these guys get in there and
are going to be doing a job we would all like to do – but it’s the
loneliest job in the world. I’ve not seen a bad Prizefighter fight. I’ve seen one or two fighters try to nick it and get beaten but never a bad fight.
This is basic entertainment boxing and bringing in a crowd that normally
goes to boxing. It’s a cross between professional boxing, UFC, a little
bit of the contender thrown in and a bit of 20/20 Cricket - it’s all action.
Each one of these fighters is a main event fighter and the crowd at Earls
Court are going to be entertained. When the bell goes it’s going to be
carnage because they don’t know any other way.
I thought the first Prizefighter Heavyweights was always going to be a
cracker but this promises to be even better. Everyone is a puncher and
that’s what makes Prizefighter interesting so these guys pick themselves.
I think this will be pound-for-pound the best Prizefighter show we’ve ever
done and I’m excited about this like never before.”
No sooner had Barry Hearn finished than the first questions were asked of
the fighters and it came as no surprise that they were directed at
possibly the most famous name, besides the eminent Mr Hearn, seated there,
the ever likeable and entertaining London-based Jamaican Bruce ‘Lionheart’
Scott.
Bruce was asked “you haven’t fought in three years, will you be ready?” to
which he replied, “It depends on which way you look at it. I’ve been
training hard with the excellent John Rooney. I’m training very hard, very
very hard. Training harder than ever in my life.”
The next question asked was where he is training for the tournament, to
which Bruce replied, “I’m training near London Bridge, I’m at Gleason’s
Gym”
All nice and tame stuff but those gathered aboard the historic warship
knew as soon as the third question was asked things were going to start
getting a bit more lively as Bruce was asked about his fellow contestants.
The mischievous Jamaican smiled before launching his first shot across his
oppositions’ bows, “I’ve knocked some of them out. I’m not worried about
them. They know who they are. I’m not joking, I’m coming for it.”
Bruce’s second salvo was directed at Terry Dunstan, who was sat next to
him, when asked if he had sparred with him when they were both training at
the same gym, “No, no he was to scared to spar me. No he wouldn’t spar
with me. I had just come from Jamaica then, I was raw.” He said, before
earnestly adding “You can ask him, he didn’t want to spar.”
A shell-shocked Terry responded, “He (Scott) must have a better memory
than me or I must be punch drunk.”
Bruce fired a range-finding tracer, “He has the fastest knockout in
England I think, yeah the European Championship I think.” quickly followed
by a double barrel shot “I think it’s the only person he knocked out
(Scott laughs) as my daughter punches harder than him. (Scott Laughs
again, as does everyone in attendance)”
(For the record Terry Dunstan has 4 KOs and 8 TKOs in his career)
Terry spins round and let’s off his own quick-fire salvo, “He (Scott) says
I can’t punch and he says I ain’t knocked anyone out . If he (Scott) says
I ain’t knocked anybody out either he’s punch drunk or I’m punch drunk.”
Darren Corbett decides it’s time for him to to lock Bruce into his sights
before firing a warning shot in the Jamaican’s direction, “Bruce, you say
that you knocked people out. The referee stopped our fight in the tenth. I
was ahead after three rounds. I hope we meet in the first round (of the
Prizefighter Tournament) because...”
But before Darren could get another word out Terry Dunstan steams port
side of the Irishman and diplomatically suggests, “Save it for the 19th.”
to prevent a full scale battle breaking out.
As the fog of war subsided, Dean Francis decided it was time to declare
his position, “For me this is a last-ditch attempt to fulfill my dream of
winning a world title,” before firing his own warning shot over his
opponents’ collective bows, “I’m going in there to beat everyone. If Bruce
Scott thinks he will beat me then he has got another think coming. I’m a
cruiserweight but a lot of these guys are heavyweights having to lose the
weight.”
Micky Steeds diplomatically saved further battle cries by saying, “It’s a
good competition and you can see that by the names in it. If you go all
the way you can get three good names on your record all in one night, and
that may normally take a couple of years.” before lightening the
proceedings further when he added, “It’s fast and furious but I’m the
youngest and prettiest here.”
Continuing on the lighter theme late arrival John Keeton, who will be
celebrating his birthday the night of the Prizefighter tournament, raised
the biggest laugh of the day when he said “It’s absolutely fantastic and
I’m proud to be in it. There are a lot of old faces who have done a lot of
damage in the past to me.” before adding after the laughter had died down,
“But it’s an honour to have this opportunity of boxing in Prizefighter.
This gives everyone a boost to their careers.”
Directly after the entertaining press conference Bruce walked the short
distance to Gleason’s gym and got straight back to work preparing for the
Prizefighter tournament. One thing is clear although he may have said “I’m
coming for it” in a light hearted manner, the reality is he means it 100%.
The Prizefighter series is a knock-out boxing tournament created by boxing
promoter Barry Hearn and aired on Sky Sports. The format has an initial
eight fighters compete in four quarter-finals with the chance of fighting
their way into a final fight for a chance to win a main prize of £25000.
All contests take place on the same evening and consist of 3 x 3 minute

LAS VEGAS– Jonathan Cimins, nephew of Grapplers Quest founder, Brian Cimins, was diagnosed with Autism at only 18 months of age. Manfredo goes back to the future Fights Walid Smichet Saturday in Montreal
PROVIDENCE– Former world title challenger Peter Manfredo, Jr., free from his promotional contract ties with the Tournament of Contenders, has gone back to the future, hooking-up with his original promoter, Jimmy Burchfield, and fighting against Walid “Tempete de Sable” Smichet this Saturday afternoon at Montreal Casino.
Manfredo (31-6, 16 KOs), 28, faces Schmidt (20-5-3, 14 KOs) in the10-round co-feature that has career-determining implications for both fighters. Manfredo, star of The Contender, Season I, plans to work his way down to the middleweight division, although this bout is at 168-pounds.
“I only had three weeks to get ready for this fight, so making it for 168 is a trade off, I guess, for fighting this guy in his backyard,” Manfredo explained. “I feel good about dropping my weight to 160. I was too small as a super middleweight and I’ll be just right at middleweight. I won’t be a huge middleweight like Kelly Pavlik, but look at Sergio Mora. I beat him our second fight (Mora won a controversial decision); he beat me the first fight. He won a world title at 154 and now he’s fighting Pavlik for the middleweight title. I see myself as better, or at least the equal of Mora. I know I can be world champion. I have to rebuild but I’m a fighter and that’s what we do….fight! Walid may not be a world champion, but he’s a tough competitor who can fight. Everybody saw what he did to (John) Duddy (Smichet busted-up Duddy, who received 30-plus stitches and lost out on a $1.45 million fight against Pavlik).”
Burchfield, president of Classic Entertainment and Sports, Inc. (CES), signed Manfredo in 2000 and masterfully moved Peter to 21-0 in 3 ½ years, including wins against former world champion Frankie Randall and The Contender III eventual winner Grady Brewer, as well as The Contender I star Anthony Bonsante, before agreeing to release “The Pride of Providence” in order to participate in The Contender, in which, Manfredo reached the season finale against Mora. For the past three years, CES worked in association with the Tournament of Contenders, outside of the television reality series, on behalf of Manfredo.
“We’re picking-up where we left off,” an excited Burchfield said about getting back with Manfredo. “Peter is still one of the most marketable fighters in the world. He’s only 28 and wants to be world champion There’s a lot of upside. We had just signed a 3-year promotional contract and passed the CES ceremonial torch from Vinny Paz to Peter, when he asked for permission to fight on The Contender. He was the NABO champion and No. 3 in the WBO, but Peter’s like a son to me, and I couldn’t stop him from getting a shot at a $1-million prize for his family. That experience helped him become a household name in boxing circles. Our plan now calls for him to fight outside of New England for awhile, possibly one time in Italy, before fighting back at home. We have targeted (John) Duddy at middleweight.”
Nothing happens for Manfredo, however, unless he gets past Smichet, the former Canadian middleweight title-holder who has knocked-off previously unbeaten Matt O’Brien, fought a draw with Donny McCrary, and been in tough against Sebastien Demers and Duddy.
“He is a tough, hard-nosed, come forward fighter,” Manfredo’s father/head trainer Peter Manfredo, Sr. broke-down Smichet. “He is easy to figure out. Peter needs fight smart – box, angles, double-up on his jab, and work behind it. He can’t stand in front of him or it’s going to be a much harder fight. Everyone saw what this guy did to Duddy. You can’t get in too close with him because he has a nice right hand. I give a lot of credit to his trainer, Otis Grant.”
All of Manfredo’s pro losses have been to world champions or world-class fighters --Joe Calzaghe, Mora (twice), Jeff Lacy, Sakio Bika and Alfonso Gomez – and half were of them super middleweight. Peter is on his way down to 160 pounds with Duddy clearly in his sights.
“Duddy’s a great guy, unbeaten contender and a big draw,” Manfredo concluded. “We could make a lot of money for each other, Italian versus Irishman, in a great fight for fans like (Arturo) Gatti and (Micky) Ward. If that fight doesn’t happen there’s guys like Demers and others, but I have to take care of Smichet first and show people I still have it.
“I’m glad to be back with Jimmy. He’s a great guy, like family. I started with him and trust him. I can talk to him about what’s on my mind, vent if I have to, and he’ll always send me in the right direction. I believe he can take me to the place I want to be – world champion. I have the name and he has the connections. Together we can make one last run. I’m taking it one fight at a time and we’ll see where it takes us.”

***Multi-Talented Undefeated 160 lbs. Prospect Willie Monroe Jr. from Famous Monroe Boxing Family Makes DBE Debut May 7***
New York - The name Willie Monroe evokes memories of great success inside a boxing ring and now DiBella Entertainment has signed the man who carries on that tradition. However, Willie Monroe Jr. is creating his own legacy of fistic achievement and fame. Monroe Jr.'s next step comes on May 7 as the undefeated southpaw prospect makes his DiBella Entertainment debut in his hometown of Rochester, New York.
“Willie has already started to display his famous boxing pedigree in just four professional fights and I’m excited to help him continue to develop that talent while also giving him the opportunity to showcase his own unique flare,” said DBE president Lou DiBella.
Monroe Jr. (4-0, 1 KO) had a limited amateur career, but still managed to capture gold at the Empire Games and in regional Golden Gloves competitions. He finished off his career in the unpaid ranks by reaching the National Golden Gloves finals in May 2007. Monroe Jr. briefly put his boxing career on hold before turning professional to focus on his music, which he pursues to this day.
“After the National Golden Gloves, I suggested to Willie that he take some time off to think about the whole music thing before concentrating on boxing. He’s incredibly talented with charisma and good looks. Willie has a chance to resurrect boxing and his music will help!” exclaimed trainer Danny Akers.
The 22-year-old Monroe Jr. trains at Performance Fitness in Ithaca, New York. Team Monroe consists of Willie, Akers, strength & conditioning coach Patrick J. O’Connor and cutman Don “Doc” Hassan. “Willie’s grandfather did a great job training him early on, but by late in his amateur career, he needed better conditioning, and Patrick has really made a difference” said Akers.
Monroe Jr’s father, Willie Monroe, was an outstanding middleweight from 1985 to 2000, who rose to # 6 in the world ratings in the early ‘90s. His great uncle, Willie “The Worm” Monroe, was a fantastic middleweight contender fighting out of Philadelphia in the ‘70s.
“This kid has the tools to go all the way. His handspeed reminds me of a young Roy Jones Jr.,” said advisor Johnny Bos. Ironically, it’s Jones Jr., who Monroe Jr. patterns his style after in the ring.
Monroe Jr. will be in six-round action on Thursday, May 7, at the Main Street Armory in Rochester, New York. In his most recent bout, he unanimously outpointed Chris Aucoin over four rounds in Syracuse, NY, on November 19. To date, in fifteen rounds fought as a professional, Monroe Jr. has yet to lose a single round.

Joey “Minnesota Ice” Abell will be back at The Blue Horizon in a scheduled eight round bout against an opponent to be named shortly.
Abell will highlight a card that is promoted by Vernoca L. Michael and Blue Horizon Boxing Promotions Inc.
Abell, 23-4 with twenty-three knockouts returns to The Legendary Blue Horizon for the first time in thirteen months when he took out Maurice Wheeler in two rounds. This will be Abell’s tenth appearance at The Legendary Blue Horizon (8-1, 8 KO’s).
Abell is on a three fight streak of first round knockouts with the latest being over Galen Brown (32-10-1) on April 4th in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Vernoca L. Michael and matchmaker Don Elbaum have assembled an outstanding undercard to support the much anticipated main event.
In an eight round Jr. Middleweight bout, Kevin Carmody of Philadelphia will take on Daniel Maldonado of Henderson, Kentucky.

Maldonado also has a fifth round stoppage victory over former world title challenger Julio Coronel on July 16th, 2005.
Maldonado captured the IBA Featherweight title with a twelve round split decision over Jose Alberto Gonzalez (14-2) on November 17, 2006. That win was part of a three fight winning streak with the latest being a four round unanimous decision over Terrance Roy on May 16th, 2008 in Evansville, Indiana.
In another bout scheduled for eight rounds, Legendary Blue Horizon favorite, Gee Cullmer (15-1, 3 KO’s) will take on Clarence “Sonny Bono” Taylor in a Middleweight bout.
Cullmer has been on a roll as he is undefeated in his last eleven contests (10-0, 1 NC)
This will be Cullmer’s eleventh consecutive start at The Legendary Blue Horizon and is coming off a eight round Majority decision over Jameel Wilson back on September 12th in what some in Philadelphia are calling the 2008 Philly Fight of the Year.
Taylor has a deceiving record of 13-21-3 with six knockouts. The Wilmington, Delaware native has fought a “whose-who” of top fighters in the Jr. Middleweight & Middleweight divisions.

Karmazin added to Kazakhstan show Shumenov-Berrio headline May 9
LAS VEGAS– Russian middleweight Roman “Made In Hell” Karmazin will fight at home in Asia for the first time in seven years, May 9 on a show presented by KZ Event Productions, Inc., outdoors at Khadjimukan Stadium in Chimkent, Kazakhstan.
World-rated light heavyweight contender Beibut Shumenov headlines the star-studded show in his hometown against former IBF super middleweight champion Alejandro “Naco” Berrio in the12-round main event for the vacant IBA World light heavyweight championship, as well as Shumenov’s WBO Asia Pacific, WBC Asian Boxing Council and PABA Interim titles.
Las Vegas-based KZ Event Productions, Inc. is owned by the Shumenov brothers, pro boxer Beibut and Chingis.
Karmazin (38-3-1, 24 KOs), born in Kuznetsk, Russia, has been residing the past few years in Hollywood (CA), where works out of the famed World Card Gym in Los Angeles and is trained by Freddie Roach. In 1991, Roman went to Kazakhstan to serve in the military and he was allowed to workout at in a gym in Uralsk under trainer Uahasov Kvanysh. Two years later, Roman was discharged and Kvanysh offered him an opportunity to remain training in Uralsk. Impressed by what he had been taught, Karmazin agreed and he lived in Uralsk, marrying a year later and his son, Oleg, was born there in 1995. Oleg still lives and studies in Uralsk. Roman, however, left on the advisement of his trainer in 1995 to train in St. Petersburg (Russia) due to lack of sufficient sparring partners.
“I am very excited to be going back to Kazakhstan to fight on the Shumenov’s card,” Roman remarked. “I truly appreciate what Beibut and Chingis are doing to support the sport of boxing in Kazakhstan and all around the world. I hope to put on a great performance that will lead to a world title shot at the end of this year.”
A former European light middleweight champion, Karmazin captured the IBF light middleweight title in 2005, winning a unanimous 12-round decision against Kassim Ouma. Roman’s most notable victims over the years also include former world champions Alejandro Garcia and Bronco McKart, as well as Antwun Echols, and James Obede Toney.
In his last action, Roman successfully defended the NABF belt that he won last year by defeating McKart, stopping 3-time world title challenger Echols in the seventh round of their March 21st fight at the Playboy Mansion. Karmazin, rated No. 5 by the IBF and No. 10 by the WBC, will fight an opponent to be determined May 9 in the 10-round co-feature.
Also fighting on the card is former WBO light welterweight title-holder DeMarcus “Chop Chop” Corley (33-11, 19 KOs) and 4-time Uzbekistan National amateur champion Gayrat Ahmedov (10-0-1, 6 KOs), who will be making his KZ Event debut, in a pair of 8-round bouts against opponents to be determined.
“We’re excited to add a great fighter such as Roman Karmazin on our card,” promoter Chingis Shumenov said. “He’s the third former world champion, joining Berrio and Corley, fighting on the May 9th show. Roman is on his way to becoming world champion once again. He lived in Kazakhstan and fans certainly will give him a royal welcome home.
"KZ Event Productions is actively pursuing new talent to sign and everyone will be impressed by the newest member of our growing stable, unbeaten Gayrat Ahmedov. The May 9th show will be taped live and broadcast at a later date in North America. This summer we plan on promoting a show in the United States.”
2004 Kazakhstan Olympian sensation Beibut Shumenov (7-0, 5 KOs), the 2008 WBC Asian Boxing Council Organization’s Boxer of the Year, is already rated No. 8 by the WBA, No. 9 by the WBO and No. 16 by the WBC. His most notable win was a one-sided victory by 12-round decision (120-107, 120-108, 120-108) against former WBC title-holder Montell “Ice” Griffin (50-8, 30 KOs) last August in Kazakhstan.
Colombian knockout artist Berrio (28-5, 27 KOs) has been the distance only once in 33 pro fights, knocking out 27 of his 28 victims, highlighted by two victories against Robert Stiegltiz, once for the IBF super middleweight title, along with wins versus Syd Vanderpool and Yusaf Mack.
Also scheduled to fight May 9 on the undercard is heavyweight “Wreckless” Willie Chapman (21-29-4, 7 KOs) vs. Talgat Dosanov (12-11-1, 5 KOs), undefeated Uzbekistan light middleweight Ravshan Hudoinazarov (7-0. 5 KOs), Chimkent hometown favorites such as super bantamweight Yersin Jailauov (19-6-1, 7 KOs), middleweight Kanat Orakbaev (2-0, 0 KOs) and pro-debuting heavyweight Doszhan Ospanov. All fights and fighters are subject to change.
