Mayweather vs. Mosley - A Throwback to the Rich History of American Fights and the Welterweight Division‏

...Check your almanac: On the night of September 16, 1981, time stopped for one hour while welterweight champions Sugar Ray Leonard and Thomas Hearns traded punches in Las Vegas. That's how big a fight it was. On May 1, welterweights Floyd "Money" Mayweather and Sugar Shane Mosley will clash in the biggest bout of 2010. The mega-matchup of multi-division champions, pound-for-pound kings and future Hall of Famers summons memories not only of Leonard-Hearns, but also of the rich history of American welterweights.

In recent years, boxing's headlines have been made largely by foreign-born fighters like Vitali and Wladimir Klitschko, Ricky Hatton, Manny Pacquiao, Joe Calzaghe and Juan Manuel Marquez. At welterweight or otherwise, there have been precious-few all-American matchups. In that sense, Mayweather-Mosley is a throwback fight.

In the boxing-rich 1980s, the majority of super-fights were contested between Americans. Among the memorable matchups were Leonard-Hearns, Leonard-Marvin Hagler, Hagler-Hearns, Larry Holmes-Gerry Cooney, Holmes-Muhammad Ali, Michael Spinks-Holmes and Mike Tyson-Spinks.

The same can be said for many of the major fights of the 1990s, including Evander Holyfield-Riddick Bowe, Holyfield-Tyson, Holyfield-George Foreman, Michael Moorer-George Foreman Roy Jones-Bernard Hopkins, Jones-James Toney and Pernell Whitaker-Oscar De La Hoya.

The first decade of the new century has seen a shift. There have been big fights involving Americans (De La Hoya-Mayweather, De La Hoya- Hopkins, Mosley-De La Hoya I and II), but nowhere near as many as in previous years. Perhaps Mayweather-Mosley represents the beginning of a shift back to the way it used to be.

No one is quite sure of the origin of the word "welterweight," but boxing historians are certain that the 147-pound division's first world champion was Boston's Paddy Duffy, who was crowned in 1888. In the 122 years since, the division has been dominated by Americans.

Consider the following:

*In 1939, St. Louis' Henry Armstrong, who is usually ranked below only Sugar Ray Robinson on all-time pound-for-pound lists, defended his welterweight title an incredible 11 times. This feat took place only a year after Armstrong defeated Chicago's Barney Ross, an all-time great himself, to win the title.

*New York City's Sugar Ray Robinson is remembered primarily as a middleweight, but was at his fighting best as a welterweight. He defended his title five times and was beaten only once, by a middleweight...Jake LaMotta.

*A handful of the fighters who have held the mythical pound-for-pound title did so as welterweights, including Whitaker (Norfolk, Virginia), Leonard (Palmer Park, Maryland), Mayweather (Grand Rapids, Michigan), Mosley (Pomona, California), De La Hoya (Los Angeles) and Donald Curry (Fort Worth, Texas).

*Other legends who held the welterweight title before jumping to middleweight include Mickey Walker (Elizabeth, New Jersey) and Carmen Basilio (Canastota, New York).

*Four of Ring Magazine's 10 best welterweight fights of all time were all-American affairs: Basilio-Tony DeMarco II, Leonard-Hearns I, Simon Brown-Maurice Blocker and De La Hoya-Mosley I.

American athletes have historically been bigger than their foreign counterparts. Scan boxing's various divisions and you'll see that while the vast majority of heavyweight champions have been American, the United States has produced very few notable flyweights and bantamweights.

With a limit of 147 pounds, the welterweight division lies somewhere near the middle of boxing's eight original weight classes. One might say it is the average or median of all weight classes and as a result, there have been great fighters from all over the world competing in the division. Pacquiao hails from the Philippines; Miguel Cotto, Felix Trinidad, and Wilfred Benitez from Puerto Rico; Ike Quartey from Ghana; Ted "Kid" Lewis from England; Joe Walcott from Barbados; Jimmy McLarnin from Ireland; Pipino Cuevas from Mexico; Roberto Duran from Panama and Jose Napoles and Kid Gavilan from Cuba.

Still, Ring Magazine lists Americans as the four best fighters in the history of the division (Armstrong, Robinson, Leonard, and Ross). Until the recent influx of titlists from the former Soviet Union and elsewhere, Americans dominated at heavyweight, and their excellence was best explained by genetics. Not so at welterweight, where the fighters have always battled on an even playing field.

Mayweather-Mosley serves as a reminder not only that Americans remain among the world's best fighters, but also that the welterweight division is still red, white and blue.

See you at the Fights.

BOXING'S NEXT GENERATION OF CHAMPIONS HIT LAS VEGAS ON THE MAY 1 MAYWEATHER-MOSLEY TELEVISED UNDERCARD

BOXING'S NEXT GENERATION OF CHAMPIONS HIT LAS VEGAS ON THE MAY 1 MAYWEATHER-MOSLEY TELEVISED UNDER-CARD SAUL ALVAREZ VS. JOSE MIGUEL COTTO and DANIEL PONCE DE LEON VS. CORNELIUS LOCK and HECTOR SALDIVIA VS. SAID OUALI FEATURED ON THE HBO PAY-PER-VIEW® TELECAST

Boxing superstar and six-time World Champion Floyd "Money" Mayweather and welterweight mega-star, five-time World Champion and current WBA Welterweight World Champion Sugar Shane Mosley, are set to meet Saturday, May 1 at MGM Grand in Las Vegas in a spectacular bout which will be produced and distributed live on HBO Pay-Per-View® beginning at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT.

In welterweight action, 19-year-old Mexican prodigy Saul "Canelo" Alvarez puts his unbeaten record on the line against veteran contender Jose Miguel Cotto in a 10-round bout, former World Champion Daniel Ponce De Leon and Cornelius Lock will face off in a 10-round featherweight match-up, while Argentinean power puncher Hector David Saldivia takes on Las Vegas native Said Ouali in a 10-round welterweight fight.

The event, promoted by Mayweather Promotions and Golden Boy Promotions, and sponsored by Cerveza Tecate, AT&T, Dewalt Tools and StubHub, promises to be a spectacular display of talent and skill with Mayweather and Mosley meeting in a 12-round welterweight battle that is already being compared to other great and historic welterweight match-ups such as Sugar Ray Leonard against Tommy Hearns and Oscar de la Hoya against Felix Trinidad.

Unbeaten in 32 pro fights, Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico's Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (31-0-1, 23 KOs) has quickly developed a tremendous fan base and is rapidly moving in on a world title shot. With the NABF, WBO Latino, WBC Youth and WBA Fedecentro welterweight title belts already in his trophy case, it's clear that the Mexican phenom is ready for the big time. Currently ranked fourth in the world by the WBC and WBO, Alvarez must first turn back the challenge of his toughest test to date, Jose Miguel Cotto, before moving closer to his dream of a world title shot.

The brother of boxing superstar Miguel Cotto, Jose Miguel Cotto (31-1-1, 23 KOs) is carving out his own niche in the fight game with an exciting style and a veteran's savvy. A 1996 Puerto Rican Olympian, the Caguas native is unbeaten in five fights since his hard-fought decision loss to Juan "Baby Bull" Diaz in a 2006 lightweight world title bout. Now fighting at 147 pounds, the 32-year-old feels that now is the time to shine and wants to prove it against Alvarez on May 1.

Known for his knockout power and warrior's heart, former Junior Featherweight World Champion Daniel Ponce De Leon (38-2, 32 KOs) has reinvented himself as a featherweight contender and with wins over Marlon "Rata" Aguilar, Roinet Caballero and Orlando "El Fenomeno" Cruz in his new weight class. A May 1 victory over the crafty Cornelius Lock should put him on a fast track to becoming a two-division world champion.

Winner of three of his last four bouts, including victories over 14-0 Juan Garcia, 27-1 Roger "Speedy" Gonzalez and 16-0-1 Orlando "El Fenomeno" Cruz, Detroit's Cornelius Lock (19-4-1, 12 KOs) is rapidly becoming a fighter opposing pugilists definitely don't want to see across the ring from them on fight night. The 31-year-old southpaw plans on spoiling Daniel Ponce De Leon's night this May.

Ranked fourth in the world by the WBA, Argentinean warrior Hector David Saldivia (33-1, 26 KOs) has been making waves in the welterweight division for the last two years. Winner of the WBA Fedelatin title, he has defeated the likes of Omar "Tito" Weis, Ricardo Cano, Daudy Bahari and Luis Rodriguez. On May 1, "El Tigre" makes his United States debut against Said Ouali.

A native of Morocco now fighting out of Las Vegas, Said Ouali (26-3, 18 KOs) gets a chance to perform in front of his adopted hometown crowd on May 1 when he takes on Argentina's Hector David Saldivia. Winner of 12 of his last 13 bouts, this southpaw standout who is ranked number five in the world by the WBA is well aware that he can catapult himself even higher up in the 147-pound rankings with a victory over Saldivia.

The Mayweather vs. Mosley pay-per-view telecast, which begins at 9 p.m. ET / 6 p.m. PT, has a suggested retail price of $54.95, will be produced and distributed by HBO Pay-Per-View® and will be available to more than 71 million pay-per-view homes. Mayweather vs. Mosley Trainer Conference Call-In part

N. Richardson

Well, going forward, a lot of things come to pass. We see this as being an outstanding fight once again that relies on both participants, but I feel as though if you check the history you've never seen Shane Mosley in let alone a bad fight, you've never seen Shane Mosley in a boring fight. I don't see that changing at all in this fight, especially with an outstanding athlete such as Floyd Mayweather Jr. Like I said, this will be a matter of us putting the strategy together and seeing what the outcome is. In fact, both of us have exceptional athletes, but I'm still confident that our guys can get the job done. I look forward to the contest

N. Richardson:

I've said this before, and I'll repeat it. As far as Shane preparing for the Margarito fight and Shane preparing for the Mayweather fight, I'm very comfortable with his mental preparation. I'm very comfortable, and I'm more comfortable in either one of those fights than I was for the Berto fight because this is the level that Shane desires. This is where Shane knows he belongs.

Now, like we said, it's all right that I hear things of the nature, one side of the fence I hear people say undefeated, and they give you the impression because a guy hasn't lost yet he's great, but then they say the greatest fighter was Ray Robinson who lost fights. If Ray Robinson's the greatest fighter in your mind, then you do recommend great fighters lose fights. Right there in that contradiction itself, it explains what can happen in this fight on May 1.

R. Mayweather

Thank you. My name is Roger Mayweather. Obviously, you already know I'm training Floyd Mayweather. Of course, we're preparing now for the fight with Shane Mosley, which is not that far away. I don't think he's going to be- Shane Mosley's a good fighter, and I don't doubt that, but I truly believe that my nephew is the best fighter in the sport of boxing period hands down. I'm not saying what Shane Mosley can't do, but whatever he can do, he can't do it better than Floyd. That's what I'm saying. I understand about boxing.

I understand about boxing because I've been around boxing all of my life. They've both got tremendous skill. That's what makes a fight. They've both got a tremendous fan base. That's what makes a fight, but come on May 1st, they're going to see why they call Floyd the best in the world.

There are a whole bunch of guys that are good. Good and great are two different things, and he's on the verge of greatness, so when it comes May 1st, when all this is said and done, I won't even have to talk about how good Floyd is or how great he is or how, I won't even have to say anything because all that's going to be shared in the books and the papers. They're going to say it all week, so I don't have to say much of anything about that.

R. Mayweather

People don't even understand about boxing. One thing I'm going to tell them right now is to let them know that one of the fastest guys in the history of the sport of boxing was a 1976 Olympic gold medalist. It was Howard Davis Jr. He had tremendous speed, but he never won a world championship, and he fought guys that were much slower than him. It's not about speed that wins fights. Skill wins fights, and he's the most skilled fighter in the sport of boxing period hands down.

When you start talking about on a skill level or how, I'm not saying Shane Mosley's not a skilled fighter, but I said Floyd is the most skilled fighter in the sport. He understands boxing. That's what he's been doing all his life. Shane Mosley had a great career as well, but at the same time when you start talking about skill, then you guys understand. You know what I'm saying. He did fight Cotto, didn't he?

See you at the Fights. Thank You for your time.

No Holds Barred: Larry Hazzard on Privatizing Boxing‏

No Holds Barred: Larry Hazzard on Privatizing Boxing‏ http://nhbnews.podOmatic.com/entry/2010-04-16T16_06_27-07_00See you at the Fights.

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with Larry Hazzard, who for over two decades was the renowned commissioner of the New Jersey State Athletic Control Board, and is now a senior official at the IBF (International Boxing Federation), with the title Personal Assistant to the President and Chairman of Officials Education, Development and Supervision.

It seems that on virtually every televised boxing card these days there is at least one outrageous, ridiculous, or highly controversial ruling or decision made by the officials appointed by the various athletic commissions which regulate combat sports. Our discussion focuses on what to do about this mess.

There are many partial or major structural changes being proposed for boxing, especially in light of the ongoing meetings between the four major sanctioning bodies, and their meetings with the recently-formed Boxing Promoters Association, who all met Friday, April 16, in Atlantic City, New Jersey. The direction proposed by Larry Hazzard is straight-forward: privatize the control of boxing like other sports, and get government out of the sport.

In light of the history of the ruthless and reckless actions of boxing promoters, which is well-known, such a proposal will be difficult or even impossible for many to accept. But it needs to be discussed and considered, and that is what we do on this edition of No Holds Barred.

Thank You for your time.

The Great Debate; Watch the entire Bernard Hopkins vs Roy Jones Jr. Los Angeles Debate & PressConference Quotes

The Great Debate; Watch the entire Bernard Hopkins vs Roy Jones Jr. Los Angeles Debate http://punch.freedomblogging.com/2010/02/12/hopkins-vs-jones-the-great-debate/9681/#more-9681

The Rivals: Hopkins vs. Jones II is set for Saturday, April 3 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nev. The event will be broadcast live on pay-per-view beginning at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT.

Bernard Hopkins

"This is 2010. That was 1993. That's 17 years I've been waiting for this fight. It's personal to me and it's important to me that I get this man in the ring and that I send him on his way to the Hall of Fame. I want to make sure that the last person he remembers is 'The Executioner.'"

"You listen to Roy Jones and he says something I agree with. You hate to say it, but we are rivals, and you hate to say it, but it took us 17 years to get here. A lot of other things have happened in our lives in the time it took to get here, but now that it's here, his worst nightmare has come to pass. Me."

"This means a lot to me. This means that Roy Jones Jr. is going to have to fight me off him. When you have that mindset, you are going to have to take risks too. Roy Jones Jr. is going to have to fight to not get knocked out or fight to knock me out. That has been the motivation for 17 years."

"I'd be a fool to think that Roy Jones Jr. is going to train to fight Bernard Hopkins, me, by laying on the beach getting a suntan. I know that that Roy Jones Jr. has something to prove to the world and I know that Roy Jones Jr. is going to come to salvage his career and change the opinion people have of him right now. I never underestimate my opponents, it's not in my character."

"This is going to be devastating because that's the way I want him to remember Bernard Hopkins for the rest of his life. Any time he looks at boxing, he's going to see that I took him to the point that he doesn't even like boxing anymore. He won't even let his kids go to fight anymore. The entire Jones family will leave boxing for good after April 3."

Roy Jones Jr.

"The fight is a rivalry because as the man just said, we are two legendary future Hall of Famers. We've always had a debate about whose career has been the most impressive and April 3 will be the deciding factor."

"The fight is important because, I hate to say it, but first he is my rival, and I must defeat my rival. Secondly, this is the perfect opportunity and perfect timing. The fans wanted it, and since they?? couldn't give them the other fight they wanted??, we're going to give them something else."

"What I have planned is simple. I will fight to get you off me, or I will fight to knock you out, whichever one comes first. Whichever comes first, that's what I'll be doing. I'll knock you out to get you off me, or go after you and knock you out. It doesn't matter."

"The day 'The Executioner' will leave the boxing ring is going to be April 3rd."

"The man's so jealous of me that he doesn't even want to see my kids watch the fight. He doesn't want to see any resemblance of me near a boxing ring because it reminds him of that 17-year nightmare he's had to face."

"This is probably going to be win and go home for me, because after I win, they're going to say I'm beating up old men and I shouldn't fight anymore."

Oscar de la Hoya, President of Golden Boy Promotions

"These are two legends that we all must respect. It's not one of the best relationships, but now after 17 years we've been able to make the fight. The fact that this rivalry is still there shows how much they wanted this fight."

"Bernard Hopkins and Roy Jones Jr. are two of the most recognized names in the sport. You've got the Tyson's and Holyfield's, and then you have the Hopkins' and Jones'."

"This fight is so big, that these guys made the front page of the Wall Street Journal. In all my years of fighting, I've never even been on the front page of the Wall Street Journal, that shows you how big this fight is."

John Wirt, CEO of Square Ring Promotions

"There's so much passion and emotion in this fight. These guys really just plain don't like each other and you know that's what a fight is all about. A lot of it's sport but a lot of it's just that these two guys don't like each other."

Naazim Richardson, Hopkins' Trainer

"Bernard Hopkins is one of the most well prepared athletes I've seen in my entire life, but I know that Roy Jones Jr. is going to show up and be the best Roy Jones you've seen in a while."

Alton Merkerson, Jones' Trainer

"Both of these gentlemen are very well rounded athletes and this is going to be a very interesting fight. Don't have any doubt in your mind about whether these men are going to be ready. They are both going to be ready and train hard. On April 3rd it's going to be a fight."

See you at the Fights.

BERNARD HOPKINS & ROY JONES JR NEW YORK CITY "DEBATE" The Rivals: Hopkins vs. Jones II; is set for Saturday, April 3

Bernard "The Executioner" Hopkins and Roy "The Terminator" Jones stayed true to their reputations as two of the most outspoken boxers in the history of the sport as they announced The Rivals: Hopkins vs. Jones II, which will take place April 3 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nev. and will be broadcast live on pay-per-view. The debate style format of the press conference was the perfect setting for these two living legends to prove why their nearly two-decade long rivalry is stronger than ever. Below please find a sampling of their bold statements, setting the stage for what will surely be a great night for boxing and a hotly contested fight.

BERNARD HOPKINS

"To not watch this fight would be a disservice because we will be making history.

"Roy Jones Jr. had nothing to do with my legacy and career up until now, but I will be the final chapter [of his]. We probably would have been here earlier if he would have taken the fight when we were debating through the media.

"My statement is simple. This fight is very important to me because it is personal. We have 17 plus years of on and off history. I want to show the world that when our legacy is put together and analyzed, this fight will be the reason. So to me, not only am I a better fighter today, I will prove my legacy on April 3. I have a lot of incentive to win. I have waited 10 plus years to come to this debate.

"Everyone has it in their spirit to get somebody back. Whether it is justified or unjustified. This fight is redemption in a lot of ways - to finish him once and for all.

"I can't speak for Roy, but my name is 'The Executioner.' I execute. I am going for his head.

"He (Jones) won that fight. I have watched that tape a million times. What Roy has to understand is that I got better. I have a resume to show that I have gotten better. That is the difference between then and now. Come April 3, Roy Jones Jr is going to realize that his worst nightmare has come true.

"It is important to get the knockout. There is a financial incentive. I want to finally close a chapter personally. This is a 17 year rivalry.

"I am going to kick his ass."

ROY JONES

"Now, 'Big Head' (Hopkins) has got to get it in his mind. We both went on to do good things in this sport. Mine was great early. His was great late. The facts wont change I am still going to beat him.

"I only hit with one hand last time. I've got two hands now. With two hands, I'm going to beat the hell out of this old man.

"I never have dodged 'Big Head', and I never will. That is why this fight is so important to me.

"We are long time rivals. We waited a long time to fight again. We went our separate ways. I haven't had a rival as long as I have had 'Big Head' sitting around.

"This is like putting on an old pair of pants that still fit after a bunch of years. They probably look better on me now too.

"Have you ever seen somebody run from somebody who he has already whooped? Does that even make sense? Duh!

"I have been trying to fight the bastard for five years. I know Bernard Hopkins. I know him very well. I have never taken anything lightly [and given him reason] to say he hopes I am ready.

"I don't duck and dodge anyone. I was the test he had to pass to get out of high school. He didn't pass that test. Now he wants to retake the test!

"Like I said I am still me. I can care less about how much better he has gotten. My job is to knock him out on April 3 and that is what I am going to do."

See you at the Fights.

TIMOTHY BRADLEY-LAMONT PETERSON DEC. 12 on SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING‏

Photo credit: Carlos Baeza / Thompson Boxing Promotions

TIMOTHY BRADLEY

“The real reason I didn’t want to take this fight is to be honest there is no big money involved. I’m looking to make some big money and I want the bigger money fights. At this point in my career each fight is critical. A loss to Lamont Peterson and my career is down the toilet. Every fight is critical. I’ll take on any and all challengers as long as the money is there. That’s all I’m worried about.

“But I want also want to keep my WBO title. I love my WBO title and that’s why I have to go through guys like Lamont Peterson to keep my title and to get the bigger fights maybe next year.

“The promoters know I’ll fight anyone. When I fought Edner Cherry I fought another world champion. Most fighters won’t do that. Once they get in the Top 10 they don’t want to fight anyone.

“I know Lamont and I know his story and I know he’s from the streets and tough and that this is his defining moment. It’s kind of like when I went over to England and fought for the world title and I wasn’t going to take no for an answer. I’ve got a lot to lose by taking this fight and he’s got everything to gain. I know that. It’s a major, major fight for both of us.

“I just have to keep winning, that’s all. Knockout or no knockout I have to win. I pray every day for a knockout in front of my hometown crowd.

“The first fight here was amazing. I know the crowd will be electrifying and will come out and support me again.

“I’m so happy to be fighting on SHOWTIME. The bottom line is they have the most competitive fights.”

LAMONT PETERSON

“You’ve got two young undefeated fighters going at each other so I know it’s going to be a great fight.

“I was actually here for Timothy’s last fight and I couldn’t believe Nate Campbell quit like that. As a fighter I don’t care if your toe comes off you or one of your hands comes off it’s your responsibility to fight while you’re in there. It’s up to the referee or the guy in your corner to stop the fight and not you. You’re supposed to fight no matter what the circumstance.

“I don’t care that he’s fighting at home. Whatever happens in the ring will happen in the ring. I can’t change a decision but I can control the things that happen in the ring and that’s all I can do. That’s all I can worry about and that’s all I can control.

“If I stick to my game plan it will be a good fight so I don’t really have to worry about putting on a good show for the fans or SHOWTIME. Timothy throws a lot of punches and I throw a good amount of punches so when there are a lot of punches thrown you’re going to be assured of a good fight.”

See you at the Fights.
Thank You for your time.

X-Cel Worldwide/Top Rank Partner up for Heavyweight Heavy Hitters‏

The promoter leading a revival of Western New York boxing, Nick Garone of X-Cel Worldwide, is announcing yet another eye-catching world-class event.

On December 3 at the Blue Cross Arena in Rochester, New York, Garone will present "Night of the Heavy Hitters" (in association with Bob Arum's Top "Rank) featuring former undisputed and two-time heavyweight champion Hasim "The Rock" Rahman (45-7-2, 36 KOs) in the main event, with former #1 heavyweight contender and world title challenger "Big" Michael Grant (45-3, 33 KOs) in the chief supporting bout

"It's going to be a great night for boxing fans in the Rochester area," said an excited Garone. "We're doing this in conjunction with another elite organization in Bob Arum's Top Rank, so you know it's going to be a top-quality show. Besides the two big heavyweight battles, we've also got local kids Kenny Abril and Darnell Jiles Jr. in separate bouts."

Grant, who fights under the X-Cel promotional banner, says he's excited about the opportunity this fight will present. "I'm looking to hit the ground running for a big fight in 2010," he explained. Grant is riding a seven-fight winning streak. He won the NABA-US Heavyweight Championship with a hard-fought win over Paul Marinaccio in his last bout.

"Michael is looking sharp and ready to get back into title contention," said Grant's promoter Garone. "He's been feeling so good in the gym he told me he'd like it if he was the one facing Rahman that night. This is a great area for boxing, so who knows? Maybe when people see the size of these two guys and how strong they are, they'll demand we set up a showdown between them in the future."

Longtime top contender Rahman (45-7-2, 36 KOs) will be making his first appearance since losing a world title challenge to Wladimir Klitschko last December.

Rochester-based fighters are also well represented on this show, as super lightweights Kenny Abril and Darnell Jiles Jr., as well as super welterweight Russell Jordan are all slated for action. Undefeated Albany, New York, heavyweight Kimdo Bethel is also scheduled to appear.

Tickets are available at the Blue Cross Arena, Ticketmaster, the Mt. Hope Family Diner and all Chester Check Cashing locations. They are priced at $25, $35, $50 and $100 ringside.See you at the Fights.

Exciting Heavyweight Bout Added To December 5 Boardwalk Hall WILLIAMS vs. MARTINEZ Main Event “REAL CHAMPIONS”

Los Angeles, CA– On Saturday night December 5th, in the main event at Atlantic City’s Boardwalk Hall, Three-time World Champion Paul Williams, the “Most Feared Fighter in the World,” will face his latest challenge, this coming from WBC Super Middleweight Champion Sergio Martinez, in a scheduled 12-round middleweight bout. In the 10-round co-featured bout, Cristobal Arreola will see his first action since a courageous loss at the hands of WBC heavyweight Champion Vitali Klitschko, when he battles bruiser Brian Minto.

Williams (37-1, 27 KO), born in Aiken, SC, living in Augusta, GA, and training in Washington, DC, started his World Championship rein in 2007 by defeating Antonio Margarito for his Welterweight Championship. Not finding additional willing challenges at welterweight, Williams moved to super welterweight and beat then-champion Verno Phillips. Once again saddled without a line of waiting challengers, Williams moved up again, to middleweight, to challenge two-time world champion “Winky” Wright. Williams thoroughly defeated Wright to establish himself as a modern day Henry Armstrong, willing to take on the toughest challenges in any weight-class. The three-time world champion had planned to battle WBC/WBO middleweight world champion Kelly Pavlik next, but unfortunately for Williams, twice those bouts were cancelled when Pavlik pulled out.

BERNARD HOPKINS RETURNS TO FIGHT IN PHILADELPHIA FOR "BROAD STREET BRAWL" ON DEC. 2‏

"Broad Street Brawl": Hopkins vs. Ornelas, a 12-round light heavyweight bout which is presented by Golden Boy Promotions East and sponsored by MGM Grand in Las Vegas will be televised live on VERSUS beginning at 8 p.m. ET/PT. Doors open at 5 p.m. and the first bell rings at 6 p.m. ET.

A man who needs no introduction to fight fans, Philadelphia native Bernard "The Executioner" Hopkins (49-5-1, 32 KO's) already assured himself a spot in the boxing Hall of Fame with his more than 10-year reign as champion atop the middleweight division with a record 20 successful title defenses.

BERNARD HOPKINS:
"This guy (Enrique Ornelas) is not a cream puff. This guy is not anyone that you pick for a tune-up or a softy. Enrique and his brother are well respected and have given everyone they fought a fight, win lose or draw. That's the type of guy I am, I duck no one. I take no one lightly. Again, I didn't want to be a part of the matchmaking part. A fight is a fight, no matter if you're in Vegas or you're in Philadelphia.

"I'm feeling good. I've trained a little bit more reserved because when you're young, you have a lot more energy. I know the media is trying to figure out when the hell this guy is going to look like he's 45. I have a future, even at 44.

"Anything is possible. Never rule anything out for me. People have ruled me out a lot in my life, and that's been my biggest motivation. December 2 starts a marathon for me, a marathon of super greatness."

Hard-hitting, Enrique Ornelas (29-5, 19 KO's) has emerged from the shadow of his older brother, super middleweight contender Librado Andrade, and carved out his own niche in the fight game with his aggressive style and fight-ending power.

ENRIQUE ORNELAS:

"I really don't feel like it's his (Bernard Hopkins') backyard. Once we're in the ring, it's something that we both do. I know I'm fighting in his city, and I know that I'm going to have less of the crowd going for me, but it's just all the better. It makes you push harder and just show the people that I really do want to fight. I'm there to fight. It's what I love to do and I just want to prove it.

"We just have to stay busy and try to find anything that he can give us. He's seen it all, so we really can't show him anything different. We just have to be ready and take the opportunities every time he gives them to us."
See you at the Fights.

Andre Ward, won via technical decision after the fight was stopped about midway through the 11th round. With that, Andre Ward has to be considered the favorite in the Super Six Tournament.
