#2 IBF, 40-year-old Tony Thompson (36-2, 24 KO’s) will be the next fight for Wladimir???

Unless IBF/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko (57-3, 50 KO’s) wants to give him a step aside payment, 40-year-old Tony Thompson (36-2, 24 KO’s) will be the next fight for Wladimir. Thompson, #2 IBF, is Wladimir’s mandatory challenger and he’s due to get his title shot. If Wladimir chooses to ignore him, then the IBF will strip Wladimir of his IBF title and that’s something Wladimir doesn’t want to happen.

It’s not an interesting fight or one that boxing fans are clamoring for, as Wladimir already knocked out a younger version of Thomson four years ago in an 11th round TKO win in July 2008. It was one of the most competitive fights that Wladimir has had since his first fight against Samuel Peter in September 2005. However, it wasn’t a thrilling fight and thought of seeing Wladimir face Thompson again now four years later is kind of off-putting to say the least.

Thompson has won his last five fights since the defeat to Wladimir, beating Adnan Serin, Chazz Witherspoon, Owen Beck, Paul Marinaccio, and Maurice Harris. Those are all 2nd tier heavyweights and it’s going to be a bit of a shock for Thompson to go from those guys to a fight against Wladimir now, because Wladimir has improved a lot since he fought him last, while Thompson has slowed down and isn’t quite the same fighter he once was.

It would be a lot more interesting to see Wladimir take on Chris Arreola, Denis Boytsov, Alexander Dimitrenko, Alexander Povetkin, Tyson Fury or David Price rather than seeing him fight Thompson again. Hopefully Wladimir can get Thompson to step aside so that boxing fans can see Wladimir fight a little younger heavyweight, preferably someone good. His last opponent Mormeck is 39, and a fight against the 40-year-old would make it seem like Wladimir is picking off the old codgers instead of going after younger fighters that can really test him in a major way

Jean Pascal

Although Jean Pascal hasn't been seen in a ring for more than nine months, he hasn't been far away.

In fact, if you peak through the ropes on any given night as you're watching the week's action on television, there's a good chance you'll see the former RING light heavyweight champion seated ringside.

An avid fan of the sport he thrives in, Pascal is a mainstay at not just the major fights, but anywhere anyone is staging a boxing match. Recently, the Laval, Quebec resident was even spotted at two local club shows in Southern California.

In the same night.

“I love studying other boxers and learning by watching and analyzing,” Pascal told RingTV.com. “I guess you could call me -- hopefully -- a student of the sport.”

If Pascal (26-2-1, 16 knockouts) were to step away from the action and watch for a while, he could be forgiven. In today's boxing landscape, the 29-year old has had one of the toughest schedules of any high-level fighter. Since entering title contention in 2008, he has been in the ring with Carl Froch, Chad Dawson, and Adrian Diaconu, plus Bernard Hopkins twice.

He insists, though, that he never really left the gym during the layoff.

“I did spend lots of time with my coaches, working on weaknesses and building strengths. The time was well-spent,” said Pascal. “With the next opponent soon chosen, my coaches and I will look at where I am in fitness and mentality, and then build strengths from there.”

He is being forced to spend a few days away from the gym, however. Ever the Canadian, Pascal recently took to the ice with his pal and ex-NHL enforcer George Laraque. Apparently the former champion had a little too much competitive spirit in him, as he suffered a minor shoulder injury.

The injury won't delay his next bout, but it is the latest in a series of frustrating setbacks. A rumored bout with Tavoris Cloud last December never materialized, and a more recent one with Zsolt Erdei fell through due to what is being reported elsewhere as a “lack of funds.”

Pascal says he just wants to get back to work, and that he's tired of the entitlement displayed by other fighters in the division.

“I needed to earn my place among the leaders in the division. People need to shark their way up to the top before they can demand a big fight. Fights are business and the public is interested in match-ups that promise to be of the highest standard, especially in today's economy,” said Pascal.

It's doubtful that anyone would disagree with him there, but he does have one controversial opinion as it pertains to what certain fighters are entitled to. Pascal is one of the few who believe Cloud's recent decision victory over Gabriel Campillo was scored correctly by the judges.

“To win a fight against a champion, you need to be compelling. I think the fight was close, and so, the champion in those cases should retain his crown,” believes Pascal.

No doubt the former champ wishes the judges felt the same way last time he was in the ring against Bernard Hopkins, but he's not looking to take any kind of “confidence boosting” fight next. Atop his wish list currently are fellow countryman Lucian Bute, who just signed to fight Froch on May 26, and a rematch with Chad Dawson.

In truth, Pascal could fight just about anybody in his home province and would likely sell the venue out. According to the full-time fighter and full-time fan, though, there's plenty of talent to keep the turnstiles spinning in Quebec -- not just in the meantime, but for years to come.

WBO light welterweight champion Timothy Bradley vs. WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao June 9th

WBO light welterweight champion Timothy Bradley (28-0, 12 KO’s) has been really pouring on the compliments of his June 9th opponent WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao (54-3-2, 38 KO’s) ever since the 28-year-old Bradley landed the fight with Pacquiao at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

I’m just worried that we won’t be seeing a sparring partners type attitude coming from Bradley when it comes to the fight where he touches gloves before and after every round and hangs on the ropes covering up for 12 rounds like fellow Top Rank fighter Joshua Clottey did when he was given a golden payday bout against Manny in 2010.

Bradley told ESPN “I’m with the best promotional company in the world and I’m sitting pretty, ready to fight the best fighter in the world.”

Gosh, Bradley sounds like he’s really slathering on the compliments something fierce in one of those glad to get the fight type attitudes. He’s calling Top Rank the best promotional company. I wonder if Bradley would be saying this if Pacquiao would suddenly retire? Who would there be for Bradley to fight? Antonio Margarito? You take away Pacquiao, and you got Margarito, Brandon Rios, Yuriorkis Gamboa, Mike Jones, Mike Alvarado, Clottey, Alfonso Gomez, Juan Manuel Marquez, Jose Benavidez and Vanes Martirosyan. With the exception of Marquez, none of those guys are huge stars and they wouldn’t be big fights like Pacquiao. Margarito has already been exposed, Gamboa or Rios will be weeded out after they fight each. One of them will be weeded out, but neither are huge stars in terms of pay per view. Gomez is a fringe welterweight contender, and Benavidez is still working his way up. Martirosyan doesn’t have a huge fan base and is a big junior middleweight. Mike Jones is too big for Bradley and doesn’t have a large fan base. Alvarado fights at light welterweight, but doesn’t have a large fan base. Marquez is about to retire at the end of the year and is only looking to get a fight against Pacquiao after he takes on some obscure Argentinian in his next fight.

I don’t agree with Bradley that Pacquiao is the best fighter in boxing, and that’s not what Bradley was saying before he signed on with Top Rank. I know he’s saying it now, but I think he’s just showing his appreciation for having gotten the payday fight against Pacquiao. I believe Bradley sees Mayweather as the best fighter in boxing, but I don’t expect him to say that now with his big money fight coming up against Pacquiao.

David Haye claims he has been handed the chance to meet Vitali Klitschko for the WBC heavyweight title

David Haye claims he has been handed the chance to meet Vitali Klitschko for the WBC heavyweight title.

Haye, who retired from boxing in November but has always said he would return to the ring to fight Klitschko, will attempt to go one better than rival Dereck Chisora.

Chisora lost to Klitschko on a unanimous points decision in Munich last month - and, at the post-fight press conference, he brawled with Haye. Chisora has subsequently been banned indefinitely by the WBC, while he also faces a British Boxing Board of Control (BBBC) hearing.

Haye is yet to be punished, but he could face sanctions if and when he looks to get a licence from the BBBC, which has hinted Haye's application would not be helped by his actions in Munich.

But that was apparently not a concern of Haye's on Saturday when, on the night Wladimir Klitschko defeated Jean-Marc Mormeck, he took to Twitter.

Haye tweeted: "Vitali has just finally agreed to fight me in a live [German television station] RTL interview!!! He told me I will be his next fight!! Let's Get Ready To Rumble!!! :D".

Vitali has called out Haye for what is likely to be one of the Ukrainian's final fights before hanging up his gloves to focus on a political career.

Lamont Peterson vs. Amir Khan rematch set for May 19 in Las Vegas

Amir Khan took the news well about the WBA not having given him back his World Boxing Association Super light welterweight title. Khan had earlier in the day been under the impression that the WBA was handing him back his title rather than having to win it in the ring against Lamont Peterson on May 19th in their rematch. Khan seemed excited about getting his title back, calling it “Good News” on his twitter page. However, WBA president Gilberto Mendoza then rained on Khan’s parade by saying that Khan doesn’t have the WBA title and will have to win it back in the ring against Peterson rather than having it handed to him by the WBA.

Khan said this about it on his twitter page “It it’s true or not true about the WBA handing back the title, I’d rather fight and win it. We all know what happened last time + prove I’m the best.”

Khan had a well wisher in Steve Bunce, who said “Well said, This time you will win it. Get your head proper and do it the right way.”

I agree with Khan about all of us seeing what happened in the ring last December when Khan lost to Peterson. We saw Khan do well in the first round and get credit for a knockdown where he didn’t land a blow and was seen elbowing Peterson to the canvas. We also saw the fight change starting in the 4th round when Khan briefly tried to slug with Peterson and ended up getting the worst of it.

From then on, Khan was off to the races, circling the ring for the rest of the fight, pushing Peterson down constantly by grabbing him by the head and pulling forward on it until he was in a bent over position. We also saw Khan use a lot of head locks and pushing off on Peterson, the later resulting in Khan losing two points after failing to head the referee Joe Cooper’s warnings for Khan to stop pushing. The fight man won that fight and I’m surprised Khan would say “we all know what happened,” because fans did see what happened and what happened was Khan got beat.

The card which will be aired live on HBO's "World Championship Boxing is entitled, "THE REAL Middleweight Championship - Get Your Irish Up", features Sergio "Maravilla" Martinez (48-2-2, 27KO's) defending his middleweight crown against Ireland's Matthew "Mack the Knife" Macklin (28-3, 19KO's). The card is promoted by DiBella Entertainment and will be shown live on HBO beginning 10PM ET/7PM PT.

MATTHEW MACKLIN: I've had a great camp, sparring has been terrific and most of the hard work has been done at this point. The next few weeks now are just about fine tuning and peaking for fight night. It's been great working with Buddy again. He's a very knowledgeable boxing guy so it's great to soak that up. I'm ready for war and whatever happens in that ring. No matter if it goes one round or twelve, I don't believe Martinez is going to be able to cope with the intensity and burning desire that I will bring into that ring with me at Madison Square Garden on St. Patrick's Day.

BUDDY MCGIRT: Matthew is in great shape for this fight. I've worked with him for the Yori Boy Campas fight a few years back so I've been aware for a long time just how good he is. We're not going to shout or boast about doing this or that. Matthew's just going to go in there and let his fists do the talking. I must say though that I am very confident that he is going to shock an awful lot of people in this fight.

LAR CORBETT: It's been a great experience to spend a few days with Matthew and see his preparations up close and personal. Myself and Eoin are very grateful to Brian Peters (Macklin co-promoter) and Martin Donnelly (Macklin Sponsor) for the opportunity to come over. Matthew is training like a demon for this fight and the level of effort and dedication he puts into his boxing has to be seen to be believed. Matthew has always been a great supporter of Tipperary Hurling over the years, through thick and thin, so we felt it was only fair that we return that support. There is huge interest in this fight back in Tipperary. I know there are loads of people traveling over to New York for the fight but for the people not traveling over, they will be glued to the television and the whole country of Ireland is behind him.

EOIN KELLY: I've known Matthew since we played hurling together as kids and it's great to see him living his dream now on the big stage. The hype in the US for the fight is phenomenal. There are big billboards in Times Square and huge media interest in the fight, but Matthew seems to take it all in stride. We came over to show our support to him because it's an absolutely massive night, not just for Matthew but for all of Ireland to have someone competing at that level, fighting a guy considered to be up there with the likes of Mayweather and Pacquiao on St. Patrick's Day at Madison Square Garden.

On hand to show their support for Macklin were Irish Hurling stars Eion Kelly (right of Macklin in the Photo) and Lar Corbett (left of Macklin in the photo), who had made the trip over from Ireland earlier this week and have been touring the city with Macklin to rally together the heavy Irish community throughout the New York area to come out and support Macklin on March 17.

Thirty-five Athletes Advance to Final Round Action at the 2012 USA Boxing National Championships‏

The long road to championship night concluded on Friday afternoon at the 2012 USA Boxing National Championships with 35 semifinal bouts. All the semifinalists in both the male and female divisions took the ring on Friday with hopes of advancing to the finals.

Both of the 2011 National Champions suffered elimination in their semifinal bouts to create first-time final round match-up in the female light flyweight division. Reigning gold medalist Amy Sowers (Bozeman, Mont.) was defeated by Olympic Team Trials contestant Alex Love (Monroe, Wash.) in their semifinal contest. Love, who moved down to the light flyweight division for the 2012 National Championships, won a 22-13 decision over Sowers. On the opposite side of the bracket, Lisa Ha (Honolulu, Hawaii) defeated 2011 silver medalist Marina Ramirez (Sacramento, Calif.) by a 20-14 margin.

Two closes light flyweight bouts determined the finalists in the men’s division. Olympic Trials silver medalist Santos Vasquez (Sparks, Nev.) grabbed the first spot, winning a 15-12 decision over Stephen Fulton, Jr. (Philadelphia, Pa.) in their semifinal bout. Three-time national champion Louie Byrd (Denver, Colo.) hoped to advance to his fourth USA Boxing National Championships finals, but Leroy Davila (North Brunswick, N.J.) had other plans. Davila pulled out a 21-20 decision over Byrd to win the bout and move on to the finals with Vasquez.

Although the flyweight spot on the U.S. Olympic Team has been locked down by three-time Olympian Rau’shee Warren (Cincinnati, Ohio), eight flyweights traveled to Colorado Springs, hoping to claim a national title. Two of them still have an opportunity to do so following Friday’s semifinal action. Edmundo Guzman (Las Cruces, N.M.) won the first spot by taking a 16-13 decision over Brent Venegas III (Elk Horn, Calif.) in the first of the two flyweight semifinals. He will face the U.S. Army’s Charles Williams (N.C.) on Saturday afternoon in the flyweight final. Williams pulled out a 15-14 decision overEduardo Vasquez (Sheridan, Colo.) in Friday’s semifinal action to move on to the championship round.

Christina Cruz (New York, N.Y.) has bounced back from her loss at the Olympic Trials with three straight victories at the 2012 USA Boxing National Championships. Cruz won an 18-11 decision over Ayanna Vasquez (Las Cruces, N.M.) in her semifinal bout to move on to the championship round where she will battle Jamie Mitchell (Pacific Grove, Calif.). Mitchell won a 25-18 decision over Melanie Costa (Norton, Mass.) to advance to Saturday night’s showdown with Cruz.

In men’s bantamweight action, Joet de Jesus Gonzalez (Glendora, Calif.) won an all-California match-up with Gary Salazar (Fresno, Calif.). De Jesus Gonzalez took the low scoring affair, recording a 7-5 decision over Salazar. His final round contest will feature a match-up with Riccardo Kerns(Anchorage, Alaska). Kerns trekked all the way from Anchorage to Colorado Springs for the tournament but his long journey has been worth it, as he will compete in the bantamweight final on Saturday afternoon. Kerns defeated Luis Castro (Texas), 26-19 in the semifinals to move on to Saturday’s competition.

A third Women’s Olympic Trials competitor punched her ticket for finals night in the featherweight division. Lightweight competitor Tiara Brown (Lehigh Acres, Fla.) moved down to the featherweight class for the 2012 USA Boxing National Championships and she will compete for a gold medal in the 125-pound class on Saturday night. Brown won a 21-9 decision over Kirstie Simmons (Aurora, Colo.) to earn a spot in the featherweight finale. Brown will take on teenage sensation Rashida Ellis (Lynn, Mass.) in the featherweight championship bout on Saturday. Ellis defeated Karla Herrera (Los Angeles, Calif.) by a 14-12 margin to move on to her showdown with Brown.

The men’s lightweight championship bout will feature a rematch from the finals of the August Olympic Trials as two-time national champion and Olympic Trials titlist Jose Ramirez (Avenal, Calif.) faces 2008 Olympian Raynell Williams (Cleveland, Ohio). Both lightweight semifinals featured rematches from the recent Olympic Trials with Williams facing Toka Kahn Clary (Providence, R.I.) and Ramirez battling Kenneth Sims, Jr. (Chicago, Ill.). Williams claimed his spot first in a barnburner with Kahn Clary, the 2011 USA Boxing National Championships silver medalist. The bout went into the final seconds with the outcome in doubt, but Williams claimed a 21-20 final decision to move on to Saturday’s action. Ramirez enjoyed a slightly easier time in his bout with Sims. Although Ramirez had pulled out their initial bout at the Olympic Trials by only one point, he won by a much larger margin at Fort Carson. Sims kept the bout close early on but Ramirez slowly began to pull away, eventually winning a 27-14 decision.

Emily Dagnan (Jasper, Tenn.) and Katie Brunancini (Los Angeles, Calif.) will do battle in the women’s lightweight championship bout following victories by both in Friday’s semifinals. Brunacini moved on to Saturday afternoon’s action with a 23-10 decision over Felisha Estrada Gonzalez (Glendora, Calif.) in their semifinal contest. Dagnan joined her in the finals with a 19-10 victory over Rosa Garcia (Arizona) in the second female lightweight semifinal.

The light welterweight division featured one of the most crowd-pleasing bouts of the day as Julian Rodriguez (Paterson, N.J.) defeated Robert Easter(Toledo, Ohio) to the delight of Rodriguez’s very vocal fans. Rodriguez managed to overcome his large height deficit en route to a 22-18 victory over Easter and a spot in the final bout. He will face Olympic Trials champion Jamel Herring (Coram, N.Y.) in Saturday night’s light welterweight contest. Herring continued his methodical run through the tournament on Friday, winning a 20-13 decision over Luis Olivares (Glendale, Ariz.) to claim the second spot in the light welterweight championship bout.

The female light welterweight bout will showcase a highly anticipated matched between two-time national champion Cashmere Jackson (Cleveland, Ohio) and Olympic Trials silver medalist Mikaela Mayer (Los Angeles, Calif.). Mayer moved up to the light welterweight class following her loss at the Olympic Trials and has enjoyed success at her new weight division. She claimed her spot in the finals today with a convincing 21-5 win over Christella Cepeda(Yonkers, N.Y.). Jackson earned her berth in her third straight championship bout with a 22-5 victory over Ariel Beck (Helena, Mont.).

Alex Martin (Chicago, Ill.) returned to his second USA Boxing National Championships final bout with a victory over 2010 National Golden Gloves championDavid Grayton (Washington DC) in welterweight semifinal action. Martin won a 24-14 decision over Grayton to move on to Saturday’s finals where he will battle Patrick Day (Freeport, N.Y.). Day won a New York City face-off with Christopher Galeano (Bronx, N.Y.), claiming an 8-8 tiebreaker victory on his 26-21 total punch count edge.

Two former middleweight national champions will face off in the 165-pound final round contest on Saturday night following wins by Olympic Trials titlistJesse Hart (Philadelphia, Pa.) and Terrell Gausha (Cleveland, Ohio). Hart battled hometown boxer Izaak Cardona (Colorado Springs, Colo.) in his semifinal contest, winning a 14-10 decision over Cardona to move on to his second straight USA Boxing National Championships championship bout. Gausha continued his impressive showing in his semifinal match-up with Demond Nicholson (Laurel, Md.), taking a 22-13 decision to advance to the finals.

The women’s light heavyweight championship bout will pit two familiar foes from the middleweight division as Olympic Trials contestants Tiffanie Hearn(San Diego, Calif.) and Franchon Crews (Baltimore, Md.) prepare to face-off again. Both Hearn and Crews stopped their opponents to move on to the finals with Hearn defeating Kendra Minnis (St. Louis, Mo.) and Crews beating Denise Rico (Los Angeles, Calif.).

Marcus Browne (Staten Island, N.Y.) became the fourth Olympic Trials winner to move on to championship night with his semifinal victory on Friday. Browne defeated Anthony Sims, Jr. (Ypsilanti, Mich.), 18-6 in their semifinal showdown to punch his ticket for finals night. On the opposite side of the bracket, the U.S. Army’s Steven Nelson, Jr. (Fort Walton Beach, Fla.) upset former national champion Robert Brant (Oakdale, Minn.) to the delight of the crowd in attendance. Nelson’s 31-16 decision over Brant gave him the second spot in the light heavyweight final.

In men’s heavyweight action, 2008 Olympic Trials champion Michael Hunter (Las Vegas, Nev.) and Javonta Charles (W. Des Moines, Iowa) will face off for the heavyweight crown. Charles earned the first berth in the heavyweight final with a 13-5 victory over Antwon Abron (Stockton, Calif.). Hunter completed the bracket with a 16-9 decision over 2010 USA Boxing Athlete of the Year Steve Geffrard (Boca Raton, Fla.).

The super heavyweight division was the final weight class to finalize their championship round contestants and two west coast boxers claimed the final two spots in finals night. UNLV boxer and Last Chance Qualifier champion Brett Rather (Las Vegas, Nev.) defeated number one seed and Olympic Trials silver medalist Laron Mitchell (San Francisco, Calif.), 17-14 in their semifinal bout to move on to the finals. Olympic Trials participant Dominic Breazale (Los Angeles, Calif.) claimed the lone remaining spot following a 19-16 win over his teammate Jonathan Hamm (Atlanta, Ga.).

The three qualified men’s weight divisions and three women’s Olympic weight classes will compete in final action at 1 p.m. with the remaining weight divisions, which are each advancing on to major international tournaments, boxing at 6 p.m. at the Fort Carson Special Events Center.
