No Holds Barred: Lateef Kayode, Antonio Tarver, Winky Wright, Peter "Kid Chocolate" Quillin, Froch-Bute Classic

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks previews the Lateef Kayode-Antonio Tarver, Winky Wright-Peter "Kid Chocolate" Quillin, and Vusi Malinga-Leo Santa Cruz fights scheduled for June 2, and reviews the dramatic fifth-round TKO by Carl Froch over previously-unbeaten Lucian Bute on May 26.

Lateef Kayode and Antonio Tarver headline a four-fight card to be held at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California, and shown in the U.S. on Showtime.

The 43-year-old veteran Antonio Tarver (29-6, 20 KOs) will face the 29-year-old unbeaten Lateef Kayode (18-0, 14 KOs), who was originally from Nigeria, in a 12-round cruiserweight fight, with major title implications. After losing his last two fights and taking a three-year layoff, the 40-year-old Winky Wright (51-5-1, 25 KOs) will return to action to fight the undefeated 28-year-old Peter "Kid Chocolate" Quillin (26-0, 20 KOs) in a middleweight bout. Also on that card, 32-year-old South African Vusi Malinga (20-3, 12 KOs) fights the 23-year-old unbeaten Leo Santa Cruz (19-0-1, 11 KOs) for the vacant IBF bantamweight title, and unbeaten WBA super welterweight champ Austin Trout (24-0, 14 KOs) takes on challenger Delvin Rodriguez (26-5-3, 14 KOs).

With the return of the veterans Tarver and Wright, the appearance by African fighters Kayode and Malinga, and the presence of unbeaten rising stars Quillin, Santa Cruz, and Trout, plus the always-exciting Rodriguez, this show has the makings of an historic night of boxing.

We have comments and discussion by Lateef Kayode, Antonio Tarver, Winky Wright, Peter "Kid Chocolate" Quillin, Vusi Malinga, and Leo Santa Cruz from their media conference calls held last week. There are many story lines here which will begin to be played out in the ring.

In addition, we open with a commentary on the instant classic between Carl Froch and Lucian Bute. Froch, fighting in his home town of Nottingham, England, but the underdog against the then-unbeaten IBF super middleweight champ Bute, completely dominated this action-packed fight, finishing with a fifth-round TKO in a fight of the year candidate.

Antonio Tarver, Delvin Rodriguez & Vusi Malinga "Four Warned" Workout Quotes

Antonio Tarver, Delvin Rodriguez & Vusi Malinga "Four Warned"

Former light heavyweight kingpin Antonio “Magic Man” Tarver, hard-hitting world title challenger Delvin Rodriguez and IBF No. 1 rated bantamweight contender Vusi Malinga hosted a workout for the Southern California media at The Rock in Carson, Calif., as they wind down preparations for “Four Warned,” the upcoming June 2 Quadrupleheader which will be telecast live on SHOWTIME® (9:00 p.m. ET/PT) from The Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif.

“Four Warned,” a rare four-fight SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING telecast, features former Light Heavyweight World Champion Antonio “Magic Man” Tarver (29-6, 20 KO’s) facing unbeaten Lateef Kayode (18-0, 14 KO’s) in a 12-round cruiserweight fight, former undisputed junior middleweight kingpin Winky Wright (51-5-1, 25 KO’s) returning to the ring to meet undefeated Peter Quillin (26-0, 20 KO’s) in a middleweight bout, Austin Trout (24-0, 14 KO’s) risking his perfect record and WBA Super Welterweight belt against Delvin Rodriguez (26-5-3, 14 KO’s) and IBF number one rated bantamweight contender Vusi Malinga (20-3, 12 KO’s) facing IBF number five rated bantamweight contender Leo Santa Cruz (19-0-1, 11 KO’s) for the vacant IBF bantamweight title. All four bouts are set for Saturday, June 2, airing live on SHOWTIME (9:00 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the West Coast) from The Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif. “Four Warned” is presented by A.T. Entertainment, Golden Boy Promotions and Gary Shaw Productions with Trout vs. Rodriguez being presented in association with Greg Cohen Promotions and Joe DeGuardia’s Star Boxing and Malinga vs. Santa Cruz being presented in association with Branco Sports Productions. The event is sponsored by Corona and AT&T.

Here’s what Tarver and Malinga had to say on Tuesday:

TARVER:

“When you’re fighting me, you have to have your emotions in check. It’s not checkers, it’s chess.

“I’m too old to run. I’m not going to go anywhere. I’m in this until the end.

“He’s never fought anyone with my speed, my power. The chin is not a muscle – when you get hit you get knocked out.

“He has a hell of a fight on his hands and I don’t think he’s prepared for it. He wouldn’t listen to my advice when I gave it to him [as a commentator] on ShoBox (The New Generation) and now he’s going to go back to school. I’ll teach him a few things on Saturday.

“A lot of people don’t realize what type of champion I am. You don’t become a five-time champion by accident. I’m going to add to my legacy on June 2.

“You can’t handicap me because of my age. The proof is in the pudding. I was too old when I started in ’96 and I’m too old now. I’m not stopping until I’m the heavyweight champ.

“Whatever he brings, it won’t be enough. The magic carpet ride continues on June 2.

“I’m not giving up until I win that heavyweight title. I’ll stop when I lose to a better man and that hasn’t happened yet.

“I got a few tricks up my sleeve and I’ll reveal one on June 2.”

MALINGA:

“Training was superb. We trained very hard for this fight. We arrived in the U.S. on Sunday and we are ready to go.

“I’m very excited to fight here and make my U.S. debut. I plan to show the fans what they’ve been missing.

“I don’t know anything about him (Santa Cruz) except that he’s right handed, but I’m preparing for anything. I’m very fit and ready to fight.

“It’s very important for me to win my U.S. debut. I must win in order to come back again and fight.”

Father's freedom anniversary added motivation for Peter 'Kid Chocolate' Quillin vs. 'Winky' Wright June 2 on Showtime

When unbeaten middleweight contender Peter "Kid Chocolate" Quillin (26-0, 20 KOs) steps into the ring on June 2 to fight four-time World Light Middleweight Champion Ronald "Winky" Wright (51-5-1, 25 KOs), America's top middleweight will have the added motivation of winning for his father, Pedro.
Quillin-Wright is the 10-round Showtime co-feature at Home Depot Center in Carson, California.
Thirty-two years to the day (June 2), Pedro left his native Cuba en route to Miami on boats with his fellow countrymen in search of freedom. "It was like a scene from 'Scarface' and my father was on the last boat," Peter explained. "He ran off the boat so fast he left his shirt and shoes on the boat. They gave him flip-flops and he thought that they were high-end sandals because he was America."
Quillin explained that his father had served 13 years in prison for illegally selling beef. Pedro was a butcher and there was a strict food allotment in Cuba. He slaughtered cows and illegally sold meat in his neighborhood.
Pedro stayed a few days in Miami before relocating in Wisconsin, finally settling with family members in Chicago, where he worked as a butcher. Peter was born there in 1983.
"Many people gain success by overcoming adversity," Quillin said. "I was never given anything but I've stood on my own and now I'm close to fighting for the World Middleweight Championship. Beating 'Winky' Wright will get me closer to accomplishing my dream. My father and brother, Chedrick, have been with me in Las Angeles during this training camp. They've motivated me. There's nothing more I'd like than to give them a big win against 'Winky' to celebrate the 32nd anniversary of my father's freedom."
Quillin has moved up to No. 5 in the International Boxing Federation ("IBF") World rankings, as well as No, 8 in the laterst World Boxing Organization ("WBO") ratings.

VICTOR ORTIZ vs. JOSESITO LOPEZ & CHRIS ARREOLA JUNE 23 KICKOFF PRESS CONFERENCE QUOTES

Former World Champion "Vicious" Victor Ortiz and popular contender Josesito Lopez held a press conference in downtown Los Angeles on Wednesday to formally announce that Lopez will step in to face Ortiz, of Ventura, Calif., by way of Garden City, Kansas, for the vacant World Boxing Council (WBC) Silver Welterweight title in the main event of a SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING tripleheader on Saturday, June 23, at STAPLES Center live on SHOWTIME® (9 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the West Coast).

It was also announced on Wednesday that the Ortiz vs. Lopez event will include top-rated heavyweight Chris Arreola (35-2, 30 KO’s), of Riverside, Calif., in a 10-round bout against an opponent to be determined. Those two fights will join the previously announced 12-round bout between Humberto Soto and Lucas Matthysse for the vacant WBC Continental Americas Super Lightweight title.

Lopez (29-4, 17 KO’s), of Riverside, replaces Ortiz’s (29-3-2, 22 KO’s) original opponent Andre Berto who failed a pre-fight drug test.

The event is promoted by Golden Boy Promotions in association with Goossen Tutor Promotions and Thompson Boxing Promotions and sponsored by Corona, DeWalt Tools and AT&T. Soto vs. Matthysse is presented in association with Baja Boxing Promotions and Arano Box Promotions.

Here’s what the participants had to say on Wednesday:

VICTOR ORTIZ:

“I’m not taking anyone for granted at all. Josesito is a great fighter. We share one thing in common, and that’s a lot of heart. It’s going to be a great night. He’s ready to fight, and that makes two of us.

“It’s too bad (that Berto failed the drug test), but at the end of the day we have to prepare for another champion, and that’s Josesito Lopez.

“I’ve been training for more than six months for this fight, but that’s what world champions do. I have to be prepared to fight anyone if I want to prove that I’m the best.

“Lopez is a warrior and I know he’ll come to fight on June 23.

“Josesito knows this is a huge opportunity for him on a big stage. That’s why I can’t take him lightly.”

JOSESITO LOPEZ:

“I’m excited about this opportunity. I’ve been in training and working hard.

“This is a once in a lifetime opportunity and I plan to take advantage of it.

“People who have seen me fight know I’m tough and I leave it all in the ring. Once you see me fight, you’ll fall in love with my style. I plan to win over some of Victor’s fans on June 23.

“It’s no secret that Victor has a weak chin and I plan to exploit that. I’ll be looking for the knockout. If not, I know I’ll need to win 10 out of the 12 rounds to walk out of there a champion. I can’t leave it in the judges’ hands.

“I’m aggressive, I like to bang. I like to come forward and put the pressure on my opponents.”

CHRIS ARREOLA:

“It’s an honor to be fighting at STAPLES Center again. The last time I left here I was dejected. I was in tears because I had just lost the biggest fight of my career. It was embarrassing, but I’m going to leave here with my hands in the air on June 23.

“My job is to put the fight in my hands. I’m going to get the knockout and give the fans what they want to see. I’m not going to leave it to the judges.

“The difference between this fight and the last time I fought at STAPLES is I’m in shape. I’m training and ready to fight.

“The fact that I could challenge (Wladimir) Klitschko isn’t a distraction, it’s motivation, but I can’t look past June 23 if I want to win a world title.”

DELVIN RODRIGUEZ: A SECOND CHANCE AT A LIFETIME GOAL

Delvin Rodriguez's life as a 32-year-old world ranked prizefighter, father and son looks to add another title on Saturday, June 2nd, as he gets a second chance to a lifetime goal, being called a 'world champion'.

Although known as one of boxing's true warriors with a recent five-year span facing only the toughest fights in the welterweight and now junior middleweight divisions, Rodriguez gets a second opportunity to become a world champion, a title he's worked towards since he was 10 years old when he had his first amateur bout.

With a huge crowd expected at The Home Depot Center in Carson, California and a SHOWTIME televised audience, Rodriguez will challenge WBA Junior Middleweight World Champion Austin Trout over twelve rounds.

Rodriguez first fought for the world title on August 1, 2009, against Isaac Hlatshwayo at the Mohegan Sun Casino in Uncasville, Connecticut. The bout for the IBF Welterweight Title, seemingly was won by Rodriguez over the twelve rounds as he controlled the action throughout only to be disappointed by the split decision loss.

Promoted by Star Boxing for most of his career, Rodriguez typifies fighters from a different era; with no tune-ups or "stay busy" fights on his ledger.

"Delvin has been terrific to promote. He's always challenged himself with each bout to face the highest ranked guy available, a fight that could lead to a world title bout. For him it's all about getting that world title belt and the fans and TV networks have been the recipients of numerous excellent battles he's been involved in," said Joe DeGuardia, President of Star Boxing.

Sporting a battle tested record of 26-5-3 with fourteen knockouts, Rodriguez has appeared on ESPN Friday Night Fights eleven times in numerous, action packed fights against other world ranked contenders.

On Wednesday, June 6th, Rodriguez will be honored by the esteemed Boxing Writer's Association of America with a nod to his "Fight of the Year" against popular Polish and world ranked junior middleweight Pawel Wolak at Roseland Ballroom in New York City on July 15, 2011.

In a bout promoted by Star Boxing and televised on ESPN Friday Night Fights, Rodriguez and Wolak engaged in a fistic battle that fans will remember for a lifetime. Despite it being his first bout at junior middleweight, Rodriguez was able to control the pace and successfully counter punch the overly aggressively bull-rushing style of Wolak.

The bout featured non-stop two way action amid a packed house of over 2,500 New York City fight fans who stood and cheered throughout, Rodriguez and Wolak emptied their tanks during each three minute round.

With the bout declared a draw, Rodriguez was determined, "I thought I won and I want to fight him again next" he stated in ring during the post fight TV interview.

Said DeGuardia, "It's a testament to Delvin's character that being involved in that type of draining, intense battle and that he'd want an immediate rematch. But Delvin thought he won and wanted to prove to the fans who watched that he could beat Wolak again, and more convincingly."

"So for weeks afterwards Delvin was calling me wanting the rematch. And while I'm working on it I bring up perhaps a bout in between, not a tune up, but just a different opponent, but he wanted Wolak again. "

Continued Rodriguez, "I wasn't interested in facing anyone else. Nothing had been resolved in the first fight so I wanted an opportunity to beat him, which I clearly did the second time. I had no interest in taking a sideways step for a different fight, I wanted to keep moving forward and that would mean beating Wolak."

"It really speaks loudly that he wanted to face Wolak right away. The first bout was such a hard battle, but he wanted to start 'Round 11' right away," continued DeGuardia.

"The rematch took place at Madison Square Garden on December 3rd on the HBO Pay Per View broadcast of the Cotto/Margarito rematch, a perfect opportunity to show Delvin again. Delvin would get his rematch on the biggest stage in boxing."

Stated Rodriguez, 'It really was a groundswell of support from the fans and media, particularly on the East Coast. They demanded the rematch and I was honored to have it take place at Madison Square Garden on such a terrific card."

In the rematch in front of a loud and boisterous packed house of over 22,000 fans, Rodriguez fought beautifully and brutally, working each round behind a terrific jab and excellent overhand rights. Scores at the end of the ten rounder were all in favor of Rodriguez, earning him the unanimous decision (100-90, 98-91, 98-92). Most impressive was, in spite of being substantially and clearly ahead, Rodriguez put on an unforgettable final round performance, brutally battering Wolak, and leaving nothing in the ring.

"I sat down on my punches more and really hurt him early in the fight. As soon as the final round started I wanted to finish him off, I didn't want to leave it in the judges hands" said Rodriguez.

Stated DeGuardia, "It's always a special night having your fighter win at The Garden and Delvin looked sensational. The two fights really were indicative of Delvin's career; a true warrior."

"Consequently it moved him up in the WBA rankings and now he's got a second shot at a world title against Trout and he's more than ready."

"For fans of Delvin there's not much for me to say, they already know about the warrior and person that he is. For those unfamiliar to him or his career, the best thing I can say is buy a ticket or tune in to the SHOWTIME broadcast on June 2nd. He's a special fighter and he's got a second chance at his dream."

Concluded Rodriguez, "My life is my career, my goal has always been to win a world title and that's my plan for June 2nd."

Baltimore-Philadelphia matchup set for June 8!‏

Jake Smith of Baltimore Boxing Promotions announced that his team of rising stars will challenge Philadelphia’s brightest young boxers in an Olympic Style tournament Friday, June 8 at the Du Burns Arena in Baltimore, MD.
A longtime promoter, gym owner and trainer, Smith’s created a buzz in boxing circles by matching Team Baltimore with a squad from the Annapolis Naval Academy and twice against the City of Pittsburgh. In the aforementioned match-ups, Team Baltimore is 3-0, with each fight card taking place in front of a packed house.

“Fans are fascinated with the local rivalry angle,” stated Smith, who was a popular prizefighter in the Old Line State and currently trains many of the June 8 participants at the Baltimore Boxing & Fitness Gym. “The professional sports leagues have promoted this for years and it’s been a longtime goal of mine to do city vs city in boxing. I’m fortunate to work with some great people in other cities who’ve helped make these events a reality. To be honest, it’s no different than in basketball, baseball or football, because the crowd shows great pride for their city and the attendance has been outstanding.”
Topping the card is an East Coast title bout between rising star Jerome Featherstone and Darius Vann. A former standout wrestler at the University of Oklahoma, Featherstone served in the Marines following his college graduation. Prior to his colligate days Featherstone starred on the mat at the illustrious Boys Latin High School. Inside the squared circle, the Joppa resident and Baltimore native is yet to lose.
“This kid is one of the most amazing athletes I’ve ever seen,” stated Smith, who promoted top pros from Maryland, DC and Virginia in years past. He’s got excellent skill and if he was boxing all of his life, I have no doubt that he’d be on everybody’s list of top young fighters.”
In addition to the Featherstone-Vann match-up, there will be 11 Olympic Style bouts featuring each squad’s top talent.
All bouts are sanctioned by USA Boxing.
