No Holds Barred: Emile Griffith, 1938-2013

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman pays tribute to boxing legend Emile Griffith, who just passed away at age 75.

Upon hearing of his passing, our correspondent Charles Farrell wrote of Emile Griffith that he was a "spectacularly good fighter. His fights with Luis Rodriguez are works of art. Those two were as close to being equals as any two fighters I've ever seen." Those fights can now be seen on YouTube.

Back in October 2008, there was a media event in Manhattan for the publication of the book "Nine ... Ten ... And Out! The Two Worlds of Emile Griffith". This book was written by Ron Ross and published by boxing promoter Lou DiBella. We spoke with both of them at that event, and are reposting these interviews, which originally appeared on the now-defunct SecondsOut Radio, in their entirety.

This is what we wrote at the time about these interviews:

We spoke at length with the author of this book, Ron Ross, and its publisher, boxing promoter Lou DiBella, about the significance of this story about Emile Griffith, who had a Hall of Fame career in the 1960's and '70's as a welterweight and middleweight champion of the world many times over.

But this book, and our discussion, also delved into that second, less public world lived in by Emile Griffith, that of a gay man. In our conversations, we all emphasized the importance of promoting tolerance, even in this brutal world of boxing.

Golden Gloves March 14th at Empire City Casino‏

For Second Straight Year…

HISTORIC NEW YORK DAILY NEWS GOLDEN GLOVES TO BE CONTESTED AT EMPIRE CITY CASINO AT YONKERS RACEWAY ON WEDNESDAY NIGHT, MARCH 14

The iconic New York Daily News Golden Gloves returns to Empire City Casino at Yonkers Raceway for the second straight year. The 2012 semi-finals of the fabled amateur boxing tournament will be hosted on the Casino’s fourth floor, it was announced jointly by Casino President Timothy J. Rooney and Daily News Senior Vice President John Campi.

Last year, for the first time in the storied history of Yonkers Raceway, hundreds of fans flocked to the raceway to attend the Golden Gloves. The oldest and most esteemed amateur event in the U.S.A., celebrating its 85th anniversary this season, has produced generations of legendary boxers including Sugar Ray Robinson, Emile Griffith, Floyd Patterson, Riddick Bowe, Gerry Cooney, Mark Breland, Jose Torres, and Zab Judah.

Yonkers Raceway first opened its doors in 1899, and in over 100 years of its history has been the home to harness racing’s Triple Crown events such as the Yonkers Trot, Cane Pace and Messenger Stakes, as well as such premier stakes races as the Art Rooney Pace. Professional boxing had been held in the Old Glory Horse Pavilion, and many major fights shown on closed circuit television. But the Daily News Golden Gloves, the most elite Golden Gloves tournament in the country for 85 years, became a “first-time starter” in 2011.

“We are delighted to again bring the Daily News Golden Gloves to Yonkers Raceway,” said Rooney. “Two New York institutions are teaming for a spectacular evening of boxing for fight fans.”

“It will be another historic night for the Daily News Golden Gloves,” said Campi. “Our rich history grows even richer, and we are looking forward to making the return of the Golden Gloves another memorable night at the casino.”

“The World’s Greatest Ever Boxer” 3-day boxing spectacular Oct. 2-4 at the Paris Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS– The Welterweight Division is the most star-studded, evenly matched weight class, from top to bottom, in “The World’s Greatest Ever Boxer” promotion.

Eight Americans, one Mexican and an Irishman who grew-up in Canada comprise the welterweight candidates list of “The World’s Greatest Ever Boxers,” which includes eight International Hall of Famers and the remaining two, Thomas Hearns and Oscar de la Hoya, are certainly headed there, too, when eligible.

On-line voting at www.GreatestEver.com allows boxing fans from around the world to select the greatest boxer in each of the original eight weight classes, highlighted by the all-time pound-for-pound “Greatest Ever.”

The eight categories represent the eight original weight-class divisions: Strawweights are included in the Flyweight category; Super Middleweight in the Light Heavyweight division. Many fighters fought and won titles at a number of different weights. As far as possible they have been nominated in the division that they made their biggest impact. Fighters have not been nominated on the basis of whether they would beat another fighter in that division, though this is, of course, a consideration. More importantly is their overall record, who they fought at the time, as well as the impact they made on the boxing world, and indeed the world around them. All nominees are listed in the voting section at www.GreatestEver.com.

The 10 Welterweight nominees, including the only two-divisional nominee in the promotion (Sugar Ray Robinson), listed in no particular order, follow with their brief profiles:
