ABREGU REMAINS UNBEATEN WITH A 10-ROUND SPLIT DECISION OVER ESTRADA; UNDEFEATED KAUFFMAN STOPS FARRELL

SANTA YNEZ, California– Undefeated Argentine Luis Carlos Abregu passed his first major test as a pro, winning a controversial 10-round split decision over David Estrada of Chicago in the main event Friday on ShoBox: The New Generation.

But it was anything but easy.

After manufacturing a big early lead during the initial four rounds, Abregu (25-0, 21 KOs) struggled mightily down the stretch as Estrada (22-6, 13 KOs) came on strongly.

At the finish, however, Abregu, who fought the last half of a hard-fought, crowd-pleasing match with a cut over his left eye, had done enough in the eyes of the judges to triumph by the scores of 98-92, 98-91 and 94-96.

To many at Chumash Casino Resort in Santa Ynez, Calif., including ShoBox announcers Nick Charles and Steve Farhood, the winning scores for Abregu seemed way out of line. He may have deserved the victory, but not by that margin.

In the co-feature, Travis Kauffman of Reading, Pa., ran his unbeaten record to 14-0 with 11 knockouts by stopping Malachy Farrell (16-2, 12 KOs) of Chicago at 2;29 of the third round. Both heavyweights went down in the opening round, but Kauffman mostly had his way.

A solid doubleheader promoted by Gary Shaw Productions, LLC, aired on SHOWTIME at 11 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the west coast).

“When Abregu looked good, he looked very good,’’ said Farhood, the ShoBox expert analyst who had the World Boxing Council (WBC) No. 7-ranked welterweight ahead by two points at bout’s conclusion. “But when he looked bad, he didn’t.

“For sure, though, he is a kid you want to see more of. I think he won the fight because of two things: heart and conditioning. And, remember, the guy he defeated had only lost to the very best fighters.’’

Abregu had won 17 straight by knockout dating to September 2005. None of his outings had gone more than nine rounds and 21 had lasted less than six. The 5-foot-10, 25-year-old did not come close to flooring the battle-tested Estrada, however, much less stopping him.

“This was definitely my toughest fight,’’ said Abregu, who was making his ShoBox debut and fourth start in the United States. “But I definitely felt I won, if not by the spread they had me winning by. I know going into the eighth round that I had to win at least one round.

“My opponent deserves a lot of credit. He’s a really good fighter who came to win. But I know I learned a lot tonight and will be better for it in the future.’’

Estrada, who was making his fourth ShoBox appearance, had been in with the likes of current or former world champions Shane Mosley, Andre Berto and Kermit Cintron. So he entered the ring with a vast advantage in experience and quality of opposition.

Somewhat surprisingly, Estrada opted to box in the early rounds rather than fight aggressively. He showed excellent ring generalship, but didn’t let his fists fly.

“The plan was to box and then take him into the deep waters, and I did just that,’’ the 5-foot-9, 30-year-old said. “Maybe I should have just come out bombing, but there is no doubt in my mind that I won the fight.

“I was chasing him around the ring and he was running for his life in the last couple rounds. I don’t know what hurts worst. The fact, they gave him the decision, or the margin two of the judges had him winning by.’’

Nick Charles called the action from ringside with Farhood at his side. The executive producer of ShoBox is Gordon Hall with Richard Gaughan producing and Rick Phillips directing.

Friday’s bouts will re-air as follows:

DAY CHANNEL Wednesday, Dec. 10, at 11 p.m. ET/PT SHO2

The telecast also will be available On Demand beginning Monday, Dec. 8, and running through Jan. 4, 2009.

DARCHINYAN, DIRRELL & OGANOV OPEN MEDIA WORKOUT QUOTES

Long Beach, Calif- International Boxing Federation (IBF) 115-pound champion Vic Darchinyan, undefeated, world-ranked super middleweight Andre Dirrell and once-beaten, world-ranked 168-pound contender Victor Oganov participated in an open media Tuesday in Long Beach, Calif.,

Darchinyan (30-1-1, 24 KOs) will face World Boxing Association (WBA)/World Boxing Council (WBC) super flyweight champion Cristian Mijares (35-3-2, 13 KOs) in an eagerly awaited 115-pound world title unification showdown this Saturday, Nov. 1, at The Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif., on SHOWTIME (9 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the west coast).

Dirrell (16-0, 11 KOs) meets Oganov (28-1, 28 KOs) in the 10-round co-feature on SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING.

Tickets, priced at $25 to $250, are on sale at The Home Depot Center Box Office, open 10 a.m-6 p.m. Monday through Friday, all Ticketmaster retail ticket locations, online at www.Ticketmaster.com and Ticketmaster-Charge-by-Phone (213-480-3232). The Home Depot Box Office will open at 10 a.m. the day of the event.

The fight card is co-promoted by DiBella Entertainment, Gary Shaw Productions and KO Entertainment.

What the fights said Tuesday:

VIC DARCHINYAN

“He is a very good fighter, but when he feels my punches he will feel different. He’s fought some tough guys, but no one like me.

“I know when I’m talking that I will deliver. I’m going to be too much for him. He’s overrated.

“I’ve fought southpaws before. It’s no different for me.

“I’m going to do some boxing. You’re going to see how fast and smart I am on Saturday.

“I’m going to put on a show for my Armenian fans at The Home Depot Center.

“I’m very confident and ready for this fight. I’m ready to fight anyone.

“I think I am the best fighter he has ever, and will ever, fight. His style is an amateur style. I will deliver.

“I want to become the undisputed world champion after this fight.

“On Saturday, you’re going to see a different Vic Darchinyan. I won’t try to take him out with just one punch. You’re going to see a much smarter Vic on Saturday night.

“Mijares is a very good fighter, but that’s OK when you fight someone that doesn’t have the power that I have. He’s fought guys that don’t have my power.

“The Mexican fans are going to support me because they are going to see a warrior. They like to see warriors and they will see it in me on Saturday.

“People pay the money and they want to see exciting fights. I’ll give it to them on Saturday.

“In my one loss my opponent didn’t beat me, I beat myself. You won’t see any of that against Mijares. I’m going to prove that I am focused to be the undisputed world champion.

“All I’m thinking about is this fight. I haven’t been this excited and dedicated since my first world title fight.

“The only fight I wanted was Mijares. I want to fight who everyone thinks is the best so I can prove that I’m the best.”

ANDRE DIRRELL

“I’m well prepared for this fight. I know he is a knockout artist, so I’ve been training with guys who can knock me out. I am mentally and physically prepared.

“I’m in tip-top shape. All I have to do is use what I’ve been working on in training camp and show the viewers on SHOWTIME and the fans at The Home Depot Center that I am an exciting fighter.

“There’s a saying in boxing that goes ‘You can’t knockout everyone.’ I’m not going to take him lightly, but I’m ready.

“Right after this fight I’m looking for a world title. I’m looking to go up the ladder as fast as possible.

“I just want to become the best as soon as possible. I need a big win on Saturday to do that, so you better believe I’m ready.

“Look out. I’m on the map now and I’m going to become No. 1 soon.

VICTOR OGANOV

“He is a good technical boxer and he will be smart in the ring, but I have the muscle and the power. Muscle and power will beat techniques and smarts.

“This is the first time in my career that I have had a great training camp. I’ve been training with Vic (Darchinyan) and it has been going great. I’m very fortunate to be training with Vic. He is a big man with a big heart.

“I know that Saturday night is a big opportunity for me on SHOWTIME. I have not taken this fight lightly.

“I’m going to do the best that I can. I think it’s going to be a good fight.
“We have a good game plan and we will use it.”

MARTINEZ READY FOR BREAK OUT PERFORMANCE VERSUS BUNEMA

***World-Rated Contender Sergio Martinez Takes on Alex Bunema for the interim WBC 154 Pound Title this Saturday on HBO***

New York– WBC # 2 rated contender Sergio Martinez will be looking to cement his status as the next superstar of the 154 pound division, when he battles Alex Bunema, this Saturday, October 4 on HBO’s Boxing After Dark from the Pechanga Resort & Casino in Temecula, California.

The 33-year-old Martinez (43-1-1, 23 KOs) is a former IBO and WBC Latino 154 pound titlist, who earned his opportunity to fight for the interim WBC world title with a fourth round knockout over Saul Roman in April 2007. Most recently, Martinez demolished Archak TerMeliksetian via seventh round TKO on June 7 at Mohegan Sun Casino in Connecticut.

“Alex Bunema is one of the top contenders in the junior middleweight division…he’s rated by every major sanctioning body, including # 1 by the WBA. When Sergio Martinez beats Bunema this Saturday on HBO, he’ll prove he’s the new man at 154,” said DBE president Lou DiBella.

Residing in Madrid, Spain, and having won and defended the IBO belt in the UK, Martinez is already an international entity, whose dream is to one day make a world title defense at the legendary Luna Park stadium in Argentina.

“With his last three knockout victories all coming in the United States, Sergio ‘Maravilla’ Martinez has just begun to showcase his skills for American audiences. This Argentinean southpaw with movie-star good looks is not only the next boxing great from his country, but a future international star,” added Martinez’ advisor Sampson Lewkowicz.

The Martinez-Bunema twelve-round bout is part of an HBO tripleheader dubbed “Night of the Rising Stars II,” and will include a pair of ten round bouts featuring jr. middleweight Alfredo Angulo vs. Andrey Tsurkan and featherweight Yuriorkis Gamboa vs. Marcos Ramirez. HBO Boxing After Dark will broadcast all three bouts live, beginning at 10:05 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the west coast.)

Promoted by Gary Shaw Productions and Ringside Ticket, in association with Arena Box-Promotion, DiBella Entertainment, and Star Boxing, remaining tickets priced at $150, $100 and $50, can be purchased at Pechanga’s box office, by calling, toll-free, (877) 711-2WIN, or online at www.pechanga.com/tickets/Online .

Doors open at 5 p.m. PT, with the first bout beginning at 6 p.m. PT.

CHAMPIONSHIP DOUBLEHEADER VERNON FORREST vs. SERGIO MORA and CARLOS QUINTANA vs. PAUL WILLIAMS II; June 7, 2008 ● LIVE ON SHOWTIME ● Mohegan Sun

On Saturday, June 7, SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING will present a world championship doubleheader as Vernon Forrest (40-2, 29 KOs) defends his WBC super welterweight title against Sergio Mora (20-0-1, five KOs), while Carlos Quintana (25-1, 19 KOs) looks to defend his newly acquired WBO welterweight belt against the boxer he dethroned, previously unbeaten Paul Williams (33-1, 24 KOs) live at 9 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the west coast).

The event is promoted by Gary Shaw Productions, LLC, and Fight Nite, LLC, in association with Tournament of Contenders, LLC, DiBella Entertainment and Goossen Tutor Promotions in association with Northeast Promotions. It will emanate from Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, Conn.

VERNON FORREST

“The fight is what it is. I’m going to put up a great fight, and it will be a great night. I will see you all there.”

Vernon Forrest shares his thoughts with the media at the podium Thursday at Gallagher’s Steak House as promoter Jeff Wald and Sergio Mora (far left) listen in.

“Jeff [Wald] stated today that he didn’t like me. I don’t know him and he doesn’t know me, so he wouldn’t have the knowledge to make that statement. I don’t even know what he means by that. He liked me, and now he doesn’t. I don’t know what that means.”

“I’m a heterosexual. This is no high school sweetheart thing. I’m like a jilted boyfriend. Whether Wald likes me or not, his fighter has got to fight me. All he has to do that night is pull out his pom pons because his fighter will be the one fighting.”

SERGIO MORA

“All of these fights are going to be exciting. As for me and Forrest, we don’t know how to lose. We’re both prideful, and we don’t back up.”

“I come to box, fight, bleed, whatever it takes to win. I don’t back down.”

“I’m excited about where I am, but I would have gotten here with or without ‘The Contender.’ God blessed me to be on that show and it gave me a head start. Because of it, I got here [world title opportunity] a little faster. But, I would have been here eventually.

Sergio Mora addresses the media during a press conference Thursday at Gallagher’s Steak House in New York, while promoter Gary Shaw and Vernon Forrest (far right) look on. Forrest will defend his WBC super welterweight world title against Mora this Saturday live at 9 p.m. ET/PT on SHOWTIME.

“Forrest is a hell of a fighter. I know that I have to prove myself. I will prove myself.”

“I see the fight going the distance. I’ve never been down, and I don’t plan on going down. It’s going to the late rounds. We’re both arrogant fighters.”

(When asked about Forrest’s power and knockout history): “Power doesn’t matter. I worry about his right hand, but I’m the biggest guy he’s ever fought. I’m smarter than the others. I’m younger. These are the things that will be what changes the fight.”

CARLOS QUINTANA

“I want to thank SHOWTIME and all of the promoters. I prepared myself better this time around. Williams is good, he throws a lot of punches, but I am better prepared and I will win on Saturday.”

“I will be here with my belt for a long time. Williams said he wasn’t really himself for our last fight on February 6, but, this time, I am so prepared that even if he brought his best game, I can handle it.”

PAUL WILLIAMS

“I had an off night [during the first fight against Quintana]. I want to get back in the ring on Saturday night and get my title back.”

“My confidence level is through the roof. I can’t wait to get out there Saturday. I will show up. In February after they said I lost, I didn’t think about it anymore. I left it behind. That wasn’t me. The real Paul Williams will show up, and when he does, he will punish Carlos Quintana.”

Paul Williams (left) and Carlos Quintana (right) stare each other down at Gallagher’s Steak House while promoter Gary Shaw (middle back) observes the festivities.

GEORGE PATTERSON (Williams’ Manager/Trainer)

“We had fun in this training camp. We were more relaxed. It was different from the last camp. We have worked hard, done a good job, and we plan to get our title back.”

LOU DIBELLA (Promoter)

“I want to especially thank Ken Hershman and SHOWTIME for making this fight. I respect Paul Williams. Everyone was afraid to fight him. Quintana wasn’t afraid for the first fight and he’s not afraid of Williams this time.

JEFF WALD (Promoter)

“I can guarantee that Mora will not run. He has never run from anybody. He would rather die than run.”

“This is a hell of a night of boxing, and it is great for television. Forrest and Mora always bring it.”

No Holds Barred: More Kimbo Slice, Gina Carano, Gary Shaw, EliteXC Preview

No Holds Barred: More Kimbo Slice, Gina Carano, Gary Shaw, EliteXC Preview

http://nhbnews.podOmatic.com/entry/2008-05-30T06_32_28-07_00

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman begins by discussing the Pygmalion-like tale of Kimbo Slice and the reasons for his broad appeal and the Kimbo phenomenon.

Kimbo, of course, headlines the CBS and EliteXC Saturday Night Fights card, which takes place this Saturday, May 31, at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, and will be shown live in the U.S. on CBS. He faces fellow heavyweight mixed martial artist, James Thompson.

We spoke with Kimbo Slice along with other members of the media at the final prefight news conference this Thursday in New York.

We also spoke with another headliner on this card, the charismatic and undefeated Gina Carano, who faces Kaitlin Young in a women's 140-pound fight. And we spoke with EliteXC promoter Gary Shaw about his views on the reported hiring by the rival of EliteXC, UFC, of a Washington, D.C. lobbying firm to keep mixed martial arts out of federal regulatory legislation.

Eddie Goldman will also be a guest on the nationally-syndicated "Joey Reynolds Show" this Friday night/early Saturday morning, May 30/31. The topic will be the May 31 EliteXC show and Kimbo Slice, but expect anything to come up.
The "Joey Reynolds Show" is a national radio broadcast in New York on WOR 710 AM and on 100 other stations via the WOR Network. The show airs live beginning at midnight EDT and runs to 5 AM EDT. We are presently scheduled to come on right after midnight EDT. You can also listen to the "Joey Reynolds Show" online at http://www.wor710.com/.

Also, No Holds Barred is available through iTunes at http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewPodcast?id=150801513&s=143441.

The show is in MP3 format, so may take some time to download.

The No Holds Barred theme song is called "The Heist", by musician Ian Carpenter (http://iancarpenter.com/).

Make sure to check out my regular weekly boxing show SecondsOut Radio, at http://www.secondsout.com/radio/. On this week's edition of SecondsOut Radio, we speak with the outspoken promoter Lou DiBella. He has just returned to New York from the UK where on Saturday, May 24, in Manchester, his fighter, IBF 140-pound champion Paulie Malignaggi (25-1, 5 KOs), successfully defended his title against challenger Lovemore N'dou (46-10, 31 KOs) with a split decision victory. Malignaggi, however, injured his right hand during this fight, which hampered his performance and now could possibly affect the plans for him to face Ricky Hatton in the fall. This week, Malignaggi will have his hand examined by a specialist. In a lengthy and spirited interview, we discussed Malignaggi's performance against N'dou, his braided hairstyle which came loose and had to be clipped during the fight, the prospects for his recovery from this latest hand injury, the scene in Manchester, Ricky Hatton's main event fight there with Juan Lazcano, the prospects for a Hatton-Malignaggi fight, and, last but not least, the role of boxing journalists and especially the Internet media. Vernon Forrest vs. Sergio Mora and Carlos Quintana vs. Paul Williams II; World Championship Doubleheader, June 7 at 9:00 pm on Showtime

Forrest will defend his WBC super welterweight title against Mora and Quintana will look to defend his newly acquired WBO welterweight belt against the boxer he dethroned, the previously unbeaten Williams. The event, will be promoted by Gary Shaw Productions, LLC, and Fight Nite, LLC, in association with Tournament of Contenders, LLC, DiBella Entertainment and Goossen Tutor Promotions in association with Northeast Promotions. It will emanate from Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, Conn.

Vernon Forrest and Team Forrest

In his last start, Forrest (40-2, 29 KOs), of Atlanta, Ga., continued his rebirth atop the 154-pound division when he successfully defended the WBC belt against Michele Piccirillo with an 11th round TKO on SHOWTIME on Dec. 1, 2007. Forrest, a former three-time welterweight champion, won the vacant crown with a 12-round unanimous decision over Carlos Baldomir on July 28, 2007.

(Photo courtesy of CBS, Showtime-Tom Casino)Vernon Forrest and Kimbo Slice

Mora (20-0-1, 5 KOs), of Los Angeles, Calif., won The Contender television series on Oct. 15, 2005 with an entertaining and hard-fought split decision over Peter Manfredo, Jr. The fight with Forrest is exactly what Mora has been aiming for and should prove to be his toughest challenge to date.

The Quintana-Williams bout is a rematch of a WBO welterweight title fight that Quintana won in a shocking upset on Feb. 9, 2008. Williams, who came into the fight confident -- perhaps looking past Quintana, an 8-1 underdog -- lost a 12-round unanimous decision by the scores of 116-112 twice and 115-113.

Quintana, of Puerto Rico, is 25-1 with 19 knockouts. The only blemish on his record came in a hard-fought bout to Miguel Cotto for the WBA welterweight title on Dec. 2, 2006 on SHOWTIME.

Williams (33-1, 24 KOs), of Augusta, Ga, captured the belt with a close decision over Antonio Margarito, who had made seven successful defenses, on July 14, 2007.
