No Holds Barred: Haulin Cass of Gotham Girls Roller Derby, NHB Mailbag on Dumb MMA

No Holds Barred: Haulin Cass of Gotham Girls Roller Derby, NHB Mailbag on Dumb MMA

http://nhbnews.podOmatic.com/entry/2008-10-29T05_17_42-07_00

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman continues our discussions about the fastest-growing sport in America, roller derby, and the dumbest sport in America, mixed martial arts, and their interrelationship.

This past Saturday, October 25, the Gotham Girls Roller Derby (http://www.gothamgirlsrollerderby.com/) held their 2008 season championship bout at Hunter College in New York. In an upset and a surprising rout, the former league champions, the Queens of Pain, toppled the defending champions, the Bronx Gridlock, by a score of 161-113.

After the game, we spoke with Haulin' Cass (http://www.gothamgirlsrollerderby.com/girls/profile.php?player=haulincass), a blocker for Queens, about their victory, and what is coming up in the post-season.

The Gotham Girls All-Stars are ranked number one in the East by the Women's Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA) (http://www.wftda.com/), and will be competing in the 2008 WFTDA Championship Tournament, November 14-16, in Portland, Oregon (http://www.northwestknockdown.com/).

Next, we discuss some of the e-mails we received regarding our last show, which was entitled, "Has Mixed Martial Arts Become the Dumbest Sport in America?" We answered in the affirmative, and we got an overwhelmingly positive response from many people who have grown disgusted with the present direction of MMA in general, and UFC in particular.

Also, No Holds Barred is available through iTunes at http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewPodcast?id=150801513&s=143441.

The show is in MP3 format, so may take some time to download.

The No Holds Barred theme song is called "The Heist", by musician Ian Carpenter (http://iancarpenter.com/).

Make sure to check out my regular weekly boxing show SecondsOut Radio, at http://www.secondsout.com/radio/. On this week's edition of SecondsOut Radio, we discuss the present and past of boxing, and its present and past champions. This coming Saturday, November 1, there will be a title unification bout in one of boxing's most exciting and talented weight classes, the super flyweight division (115 pounds). WBA and WBC champion Cristian Mijares (35-3-2, 13 KOs), of Gomez Palacio, Mexico, will face IBF champion Vic Darchinyan (30-1-1, 24 KOs), of Sydney, Australia, at The Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif. This fight will be telecast live on Showtime in the U.S. We spoke with both Cristian Mijares and Vic Darchinyan on a media conference call this past week about what to expect in this fight. Boxing is also a sport in which you can live simultaneously in the present and the past, and sanely, too. A new book by veteran boxing writer George Kimball transports us back into the past by tracing the intertwined careers of Sugar Ray Leonard, Marvelous Marvin Hagler, Thomas Hearns, and Roberto Duran. The book is entitled Four Kings: Leonard, Hagler, Hearns, Duran and the Last Great Era of Boxing. We spoke with George Kimball about his book and the past, present, and future of boxing, right before the Oct. 18 Bernard Hopkins-Kelly Pavlik fight in Atlantic City, and after he had participated in a forum on the book with trainer Emanuel Steward, promoter Bob Arum, and announcer Larry Merchant. No Holds Barred: Steve Nelson and Oct. 24 Shark Fight Promotions MMA Card in Amarillo, Texas

http://nhbnews.podOmatic.com/entry/2008-10-20T11_35_41-07_00

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with Steve Nelson, who fought in and ran the Unified Shoot Wrestling Federation (USWF) in the 1990's in Amarillo, Texas.

Our focus on this show is the debut mixed martial arts card being held Friday, October 24, in Amarillo, of Shark Fight Promotions (http://sharkfights.com).

This card, which will take place at the Amarillo National Center on the Tri-State Exposition grounds right near Interstate 40, will also be available on an Internet pay-per-view. Steve will be the lead commentator for this Internet pay-per-view.

Besides the fight card, there will also be a tribute on this show to Amarillo native, the late Evan Tanner. One dollar of every pay-per-view purchase will be donated to the Evan Tanner Scholarship Fund.

In a lengthy interview, we discuss the debut of Shark Fight Promotions in Amarillo, this fight card and which fighters to watch most closely, mixed martial arts and wrestling in Amarillo and Texas, and more.

We also open the show with some comments on the masterful performance of Bernard Hopkins this past Saturday night, Oct. 18, in defeating Kelly Pavlik by a lopsided unanimous decision.

On this week's edition of SecondsOut Radio, we discuss the masterful performance by Bernard Hopkins (49-5-1, 32 KOs) in taking a lopsided unanimous decision this past Saturday night against previously-unbeaten Kelly Pavlik (34-1, 30 KOs) at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey. We hear postfight comments from the master himself, the 43-year-old Hopkins, about what he did to win this fight. We hear from his trainer, Naazim Richardson, about why Hopkins was able to fight so energetically against Pavlik for 12 rounds. And we also discuss some problems in the way in which boxing is run which have prevented Hopkins from becoming as popular a star as his talent warrants. It is free to listen to SecondsOut Radio, but you must register to gain access to it. Just click here, http://www.secondsout.com/radio/, and listen, learn, and enjoy.

No Holds Barred: John Perretti on EliteXC Kimbo-Petruzelli Controversy, Striking and Grappling in MMA, and More

http://nhbnews.podOmatic.com/entry/2008-10-11T00_16_51-07_00

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with the legendary mixed martial arts promoter, matchmaker, and commentator, John Perretti.

In another lengthy interview, we discuss one of the biggest scandals in U.S. mixed martial arts history, the controversy revolving around the Oct. 4 Kimbo Slice-Seth Petruzelli EliteXC fight, and the degree to which the promoters may or may not have tried to protect Kimbo by having Petruzelli avoid taking down Kimbo. We discuss the roles of striking and grappling in the mixed martial arts and their evolution since the early days of the sport. Plus, we discuss John's plans for developing his new combat sport, and much more.

Also, No Holds Barred is available through iTunes at http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewPodcast?id=150801513&s=143441.

Make sure to check out my regular weekly boxing show SecondsOut Radio, at http://www.secondsout.com/radio/. On this week's edition of SecondsOut Radio, we continue our preview of the October 11 title fight between WBC heavyweight champion Samuel Peter (30-1, 23 KOs) and WBC heavyweight champion "emeritus" Vitali Klitschko (35-2, 34 KOs). On a media conference call, we hear comments from Stacy McKinley, who trains Samuel Peter, about how his fighter has improved over the years, as well as comments from Vitali Klitschko, Sam Peter, and Bernd Boente, the KMG Managing Director who represents both Vitali and Wladimir Klitschko. This fight will take place in Berlin, Germany, and be televised on Showtime in the U.S. and on RTL in Germany. Also on October 11, the long-awaited light heavyweight showdown between IBF champion Antonio Tarver (27-4, 19 KOs) and undefeated Chad Dawson (26-0, 17 KOs) will take place in Las Vegas. This will be shown live in the U.S. on Showtime. On what became a very heated media conference call this past week, we hear comments from both Antonio Tarver and Chad Dawson. We also begin our preview of the October 18 fight between Kelly Pavlik and Bernard Hopkins. We spoke with Jack Loew, who trains Pavlik, and Naazim Richardson, who trains Hopkins, at a recent New York new conference about this fight. No Holds Barred: Eddie Goldman on John McCain, MMA, and Boxing

No Holds Barred: Eddie Goldman on John McCain, MMA, and Boxing

http://nhbnews.podOmatic.com/entry/2008-07-30T10_34_02-07_00

On this edition of No Holds Barred, we focus on discussing the article "Punch Drunk Love. How boxing explains John McCain" by Michael Crowley in The New Republic (http://www.tnr.com/politics/story.html?id=8adb26e1-5e0b-48f7-9587-55d3cf9a365f), which quotes me extensively about McCain's obsessive campaign against mixed martial arts in the 1990's. We also discuss the significance of those views of McCain for today.

In addition, we also discuss the EliteXC show on CBS this past Saturday, the monumental drop in ratings from their May 31 show, and other issues including the future of the IFL, MMA coming to New York, and the flawed pay-per-view model for combat sports.

Also, No Holds Barred is available through iTunes at http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewPodcast?id=150801513&s=143441.

The show is in MP3 format, so may take some time to download.

King Blues Club in Times Square in Manhattan. We speak with several fighters who will be on that card: Queens heavyweight Vinny Maddalone (29-4, 20 KOs), Irish junior middleweight James Moore (15-1, 10 KOs), and two fighters making their pro debuts, light heavyweight Will Rosinsky, who was a U.S. national amateur champion and a four-time New York Golden Gloves champion, and middleweight Phillip Jackson-Benson, who was a two-time New York Golden Gloves champion. No Holds Barred: Todd Hester on the Soul of Mixed Martial Arts

No Holds Barred: Todd Hester on the Soul of Mixed Martial Arts

http://nhbnews.podOmatic.com/entry/2008-07-11T13_13_26-07_00

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with our colleague Todd Hester, who is the publisher and editor-in-chief of Gladiator Magazine (http://gladmag.com/).

Todd is someone who has been immersed in the combat sports for many years. He started training with the Gracies in the late 1980's, covered the first UFC in 1993, and has been ringside or cageside for countless MMA events all around the world.

Now, in a provocative new editorial called "Redemption and Transformation", in the current edition of Gladiator Magazine, he argues that MMA has lost its soul.

Commenting on what grappling, jiu-jitsu, and mixed martial arts are really about, he wrote, "it isn't about the fighting." He also argued, "fighting for the sake of pure violence is basically immoral."

In a lengthy interview, we discuss the transformation of mixed martial arts from, as he called it, the "cerebral" sport it once was, to its current state which celebrates "mindless, juvenile violence." We also discuss what can be done to change the sport of mixed martial arts into something which plays a more positive role.

On this week's edition of SecondsOut Radio, we begin by commenting on this past Saturday's thrilling fight between Kendall Holt (24-2, 13 KOs) and Ricardo Torres (32-2, 28 KOs). After being dropped twice, Holt rallied to knock out Torres in just 61 seconds of the first round to capture the WBO junior welterweight title from Torres. This fight, held in Las Vegas, Nevada, and shown live in the U.S. on Showtime, will be replayed Tuesday, July 8, at 10 p.m. ET/PT, on SHO2. Next, the annual meeting of the Association of Boxing Commissions (ABC) took place this past weekend in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. The ABC is comprised of the athletic commissions in the U.S. and Canada, including in their tribal communities, and Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Nick Lembo, counsel for the New Jersey State Athletic Control Board, attended this meeting. We had a lengthy interview with him about what the ABC is and is not doing to deal with the many controversies which continue to arise in the sport of boxing. It is free to listen to SecondsOut Radio, but you must register to gain access to it. Just click here, http://www.secondsout.com/radio/, and listen, learn, and enjoy.

No Holds Barred: Ricardo Torres, Kendall Holt, Bob Arum, Nick Lembo,ABC Meeting and MMA

No Holds Barred: Ricardo Torres, Kendall Holt, Bob Arum, Nick Lembo,ABC Meeting and MMA On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman begins by commenting on the discussion we had on the most recent edition of this show with the award-winning boxing writer and author, Thomas Hauser of SecondsOut.com, about his views on UFC and the mixed martial arts. While we obviously disagreed with most of his views on MMA, we commenton the need to establish the positive social benefits of legalizing and sanctioning MMA. This is not only not done by most of the supporters of MMA, but many of the major MMA promotions actually promote anti-social values and bad sportsmanship. Next, we preview the much-anticipated rematch between WBO junior welterweight champion Ricardo Torres (32-1, 28 KOs) and challenger Kendall Holt (23-2, 12 KOs). Their first bout, held Sept. 1, 2007, in Torres's hometown of Barranquilla, Colombia, ended with a controversial 11th-round TKO win for Torres. This fight was clearly marred by a wildly unruly crowd, which repeatedly soaked the ring with debris and liquids, even hitting Holt and a cornerman with beer cans. The Torres-Holt rematch takes place this Saturday night, July 5, at the Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. It will be televised live in the U.S. on Showtime. It is the most important fight being held this weekend, and should be an energetic, exciting scrap. On a media teleconference call this week, we spoke with both Ricardo Torres and Kendall Holt about their first fight and what to expect inthis one. We also got the comments of promoter Bob Arum about thecontinuing controversies in boxing, including the much-discusseddisqualification last week of Humberto Soto in his fight withFrancisco Lorenzo. We next had a lengthy interview with Nick Lembo, counsel for the NewJersey State Athletic Control Board, and a longtime supporter of mixedmartial arts. He is attending the annual meeting of the Association ofBoxing Commissions (ABC), which is going on this weekend in Montreal,Quebec, Canada. MMA is a major topic at this meeting. Among the topics we discussed were: what the ABC is doing to educatevarious commissions about regulating MMA in their jurisdictions, whythe New York legislature did not recently approve the legalization ofthe sport, the need for the Muhammad Ali Boxing Reform Act to beextended to MMA, why MMA promoters should work together like evenboxing promoters often do, UFC contracts, the establishment by the ABCof an official MMA record keeper, federal ID cards for MMA fighters, clarifications of the MMA unified rules, guidelines for amateur MMA,the ABC deciding to make discussion about MMA a regular part of theiragenda along with boxing, and more. Russia’s Last Emperor vs. The American Maine-iac Fedor Emelianenko vs. Tim Sylvia in “Affliction Banned”

SIGNAL HILL, California– The Cold War might be over, but old rivalries die hard. On July 19th at Honda Center in Anaheim, California, two of the world’s greatest MMA super powers will collide when Russia’s Fedor Emelianenko faces off with America’s Tim Sylvia for the WAMMA heavyweight championship.

These two formidable heavyweight champions finally make it into the ring together, in an event as impressive as the two athletes heading the bill — “Affliction Banned.” These two heavy hitters are so accomplished it’s a challenge for them to find competitive opponents. The two are almost perfectly matched in number of professional bouts they’ve fought in, with Sylvia compiling 24 wins and only 4 losses, and Fedor recording 28 wins and 1 loss. It’s hard to imagine what it will be like in the ring with these two monsters of MMA go head-to-head.

Fedor is a powerful, intelligent fighter and technician who doesn’t outwardly show much emotion, but fights (and trains) with a lot of heart. This astounding fighter never retreats, has great takedown and ground control skills, and is the most devastating fighter that MMA has ever seen when he’s on the inside. And Fedor hits very hard, with amazing knockout power in both hands. Unlike most fighters, Fedor is also a master game planner who follows through on the plan, and simply doesn't wilt under pressure, no matter what the circumstances. Fedor’s record is impeccable, losing only once when a referee decided to end a fight early when he sustained a bad cut from an elbow. All in all, Fedor seems virtually unbeatable.

Although Fedor is the top-ranking heavyweight in the world, there’s no doubt that Tim Sylvia is a force to be reckoned with. With a full 8 inches and 30 pounds over Fedor, Sylvia is a monster with an impressive record, surprisingly quick hands and a long reach that many opponents find hard to escape. His size and striking power, coupled with a rock-em sock-em attitude and stamina are a dangerous combination every time he steps in front of an opponent. Trying to regain the championship title in a fight in 2004, Sylvia wouldn’t tap out when Frank Mir locked him in an armbar, even after his arm was snapped. The ref had to put an end the fight, because Sylvia, broken arm and all wouldn’t give up.

Fedor, who has already proved himself in the ring, is looking to earn a different kind of reputation with the American people. “As far as American fans, I'd like them to get to know me personally…not just as a fighter — as a human being as well.' And Sylvia, who has suffered from some criticism and controversy, has a personal, as well as professional, agenda as well — he’s just looking for a little respect. A win against the current world heavyweight champion just might quiet the chatter and earn him the respect he yearns for. In Sylvia’s own words, “It’s time to see if Fedor still has what it takes to be #1.”

On the evening of July 19th at Honda Center in Anaheim, the MMA mega-event of all times —“Affliction Banned”— promises to bear this out.

“Affliction Banned” is stacked with so much world-class talent that it had to be separated into two live shows produced for broadcast. The night’s activities will kick off with “Affliction Live,” a one-hour, free live telecast on FSN (Fox Sports Net) starting at 5 PM Pacific (8 PM/ET) and setting the stage for “Affliction Banned” – five super fights on pay-per-view starting at 6 PM/PT (9 PM/ET) via iN DEMAND, TVN, Shaw Communications, Viewers Choice Canada, DirecTV, DISH Network, Bell ExpressVue and Star Choice in the United States and Canada for a suggested retail price of $39.95.

The heavy metal band Megadeth, led by frontman, guitarist, and songwriter Dave Mustaine, will be performing live at the event.

Tickets for “Affliction Banned” range between $50.00 and $1,000.00, and are on sale at Honda Center’s Box Office and also online at Ticketmaster.com.

Michael Cohen being named COO of Affliction Entertainment, as well as the 'Affliction Banned' pay-per-view MMA show July 19 in Anaheim, California

Michael Cohen (Center)

MANHATTAN, NEW YORK- Last week at a press conference in New York City, Affliction, the premier fashion label for men who love hard rock and fast living, announced its partnership with Donald J. Trump. Today, Michael D. Cohen, Executive Vice President & Special Counsel to Mr. Trump, was named Chief Operating Officer for Affliction Entertainment.

Affliction and The Trump Organization, in association with Roy Englebrecht Events, will present their entry into the world of professional mixed-martial-arts (MMA) with its first event, “Affliction Banned,” scheduled for July 19, 2008 at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California.

“I’m extremely honored to serve as COO for Affliction Entertainment,” Mr. Cohen said. “MMA is the fastest growing sport in the world and I’ve been a tremendous fan for years. I can assure everyone – fans watching on pay-per-view and those in attendance from all over the world – that our upcoming pay-per-view show will be the greatest MMA night ever. Holm & Villasenor: fighters love story, Holm-Sanders headlines June 13 PPV show at Isleta Casino & Resort in Albuquerque

ALBUQUERQUE– Women’s professional boxing champion Holly “The Preacher’s Daughter” Holm and her boyfriend, MMA star Joey Villasenor, met in an Albuquerque gym, where today they train and spar with each other as they both prepare for upcoming career-defining fights.

Seven-time world champion Holm (21-1-2, 6 KOs), recognized as the No. 1 welterweight in the world, will headline the June 13th “Finally” pay-per-view event against the world’s No. 1 middleweight, Detroit icon Mary Jo Sanders (25-0, 8 KOs), squaring-off in the 10-round main event for the vacant IFBA junior middleweight crown and universal pound-for-pound supremacy.

Villasenor (25-6-0, 11 KOs and 10 submissions) takes on Phil Baroni this Saturday night (May 31) in the EliteXC show on national television from Newark, New Jersey.

Holm and Villasenor have the same trainer, Mike Winklejohn, believes Holly and Joey are made for each other. “It’s tough on Holly,” Mike explained why relationships have often been difficult for her to develop and maintain. “She’s physical, athletic and everybody recognizes here in Albuquerque. It’s not going to work for a boyfriend who doesn’t have a lot of self confidence. Joey is a successful fighter in his own right, a star athlete, and that’s why it works for them. They fight (workout) all the time even though there’s a big weight difference (Holly is a natural 147-pound welterweight and Joey weights 185 pounds). Holly spars with everybody including Keith Jardine. The way our team (Jackson-Winkleton MMA Team) is set-up is everybody helping each other. That’s why we’ve excelled. The big guys spar with smaller guys for power versus speed, speed versus power.

“Holly could do MMA, but why? She could pick-up the game, but she’s a pretty girl and there’s no reason, especially for her to get hit with elbows. There’s less trauma to the head (MMA vs. boxing), but there are a lot of elbows thrown on the ground. The biggest differences between boxing and MMA is distance and different techniques. Boxing is at a longer range. If you throw a punch from a boxer’s range in MMA, you leave yourself open for takedowns. Boxers go right to left, leaving themselves open to get kicked in the head. MMA is forward and backward, up and down, which you don’t see in boxing. Joey’s very explosive. He had a great knockout in his last fight (Ryan Jenson by a punch). His techniques are better and he’s cleverer than Baroni. Holly out thinks her opponents and that’s why she’s so successful. It’s like a chess game for her. She has the smarts to out-think her opponents two or three moves ahead.”

Holm-Sanders is one of four world title fights for five different belts on the “Finally” PPV card, featuring the greatest collection of women boxers on one show, including five No. 1 independently rated fighters (view at www.wban.com). The Fresquez Productions, Inc.-promoted “Finally” is being produced and distributed by Integrated Sports for live viewing in the United States and Canada (10 PM/ET) on both cable and satellite pay-per-view via iN DEMAND, TVN, Shaw Communications, DirecTV, Bell Expressvue and StarChoice for a suggested retail price of only $24.95.

In the 10-round co-feature for the vacant IFBA lightweight championship, WIBA & IBA junior lightweight champion Chevelle “Fists of Steel” Hallback (26-5-2, 11 KOs), fighting out of Tampa (FL), squares off against WIBA featherweight title-holder Jeannine “G9” Garside (7-0-1, 3 KOs), of Ontario (Canada), in a potential female version of a Gatti-Ward showdown.

IBA junior flyweight champion Wendy “Little Thunder” Rodriguez (18-4, 3 KOs), of Los Angeles, will be seeking revenge against Hollie “Hot Stuff” Dunaway in their 10-round clash for the vacant IBA strawweight and IFBA mini-flyweight championships. Rodriguez, lost an eight-round decision March 15, 2007 to Dunaway (21-6, 10 KOs), the reigning WIBF-GBU/WIBC minimumweight title-holder and NABF flyweight champion, fighting out of Las Vegas by way of (Van Buren) Arkansas.

WBC 2007 Fighter of the Year, WBC mininumweight champ Carina “La Reina” Moreno (11-1, 5 KOs), of Watsonville (CA), meets WIBA flyweight title-holder Eileen “The Hawaiian Mongoose” Olszewski (5-0-1), fighting out of New York City by way of Honolulu, in a 10-round fight for the IFBA junior flyweight crown. All fights and fighters are subject to change.

Tickets, priced at $50.00, $100.00, $150.00, $200.00, $350.00 and $500.00, are on sale at the Isleta Casino and Resort box office, www.tickets.com or at Fresquez Productions, Inc. (508.884.7484). For more information go to www.fresquezproductions.com or www.holmvssanders.com. Doors open at 5:30 PM/MT, first bout 7:00 PM/MT, first televised bout 8:00 PM/MT.

No Holds Barred: Warrior Culture, Country Music and MMA, Pay-Per-View Model, IFL, Ryan Schultz, Dan Miller, Roy Nelson

No Holds Barred: Warrior Culture, Country Music and MMA, Pay-Per-View Model, IFL, Ryan Schultz, Dan Miller, Roy Nelson

http://nhbnews.podOmatic.com/entry/eg/2008-05-20T20_26_25-07_00

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman begins by discussing the beating received this past Friday by former Chris Byrd in his ESPN2 bout with Shaun George. Byrd, a former heavyweight champion, was fighting at light heavyweight, and was stopped in the ninth round after looking drained and getting battered throughout the fight.

We next focus on some important correspondence from a listener who understands the connection between the combat sports, the need for a warrior culture by people who are oppressed and downtrodden, and life in general.

Among the other issues discussed are the appearance of EliteXC fighter Kimbo Slice on the Academy of Country Music Awards on CBS, the flaws in the pay-per-view model for the combat sports, and what the International Fight League needs to do to improve their fortunes.

Next, we speak with the three IFL fighters who were victorious in their championship fights this past Friday, May 16, at the Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, Conn. They are lightweight champion Ryan Schultz, who won a unanimous decision over Deividas Taurosevicius, to retain his belt; Dan Miller, who captured the middleweight belt with a first-round kneebar submission over Ryan McGivern; and Roy Nelson, who retained his heavyweight title with a first-round TKO over Brad Imes.

The No Holds Barred theme song is called "The Heist", by musician Ian Carpenter (http://iancarpenter.com/).

Make sure to check out my regular weekly boxing show SecondsOut Radio, at http://www.secondsout.com/radio/. On this week's edition of SecondsOut Radio, we begin by discussing the fragmented title picture in the 140-pound division, which again is hurting whatever credibility boxing has left, and the need for title unification. This past Wednesday, May 14, in New York, Frankie Figueroa (19-2, 13 KOs) successfully defended his regional NABF 140-pound title against Luis Rodriguez (22-2, 13 KOs) with a 12-round unanimous decision. He now wants a shot at a major world title. We spoke with Frankie Figueroa and his trainer, Buddy McGirt, himself a former champion at this weight, right after this fight about it and what lessons can be learned from it. This coming Saturday, May 24, Ricky Hatton (43-1, 31 KOs) fights in his hometown of Manchester, England, against veteran Juan Lazcano (37-4-1, 27 KOs). This fight will be televised live on the Versus network in the United States and on Sky Box Office in the United Kingdom. On a media conference call this past week, we spoke with both Ricky Hatton and Juan Lazcano about this fight and their plans. It is free to listen to SecondsOut Radio, but you must register to gain access to it. Just click here, http://www.secondsout.com/radio/, and listen, learn, and enjoy.

Kenny Florian to host "MMA Live" on ESPN.com

Kenny Florian to host "MMA Live" on ESPN.com
By: Adam Morgan

Kenny Florian recently spoke with MMA Weekly and talked about a new show on ESPN.com called "MMA Live" that he will be hosting along with ESPN's John Anik and Newark Star-Ledger reporter Franklin McNeil. Here's some of what Florian had to say about the show:

"(It's) kind of a fast-paced show on the current news and events going on in the sport. There's a whole lot of guys at ESPN that have been trying to get this done I guess for two years," said Florian in an exclusive interview with MMAWeekly.com.

"Basically, I was contacted by ESPN about two weeks before my fight against (Joe) Lauzon, and there was some interest. They finally got the okay to do an MMA show, and they were interested in using me for this show," Florian said.

Florian has done extremely well in his two stints on the UFC broadcasts and is a perfect fit for this position. He also goes on to say that if the show is well received that it may end up on television. That would be a step in the right direction to get some kind of MMA programming on ESPN, something the MMA community has been speculating about for a long time.

The show debuts tonight on ESPN.com at 7 p.m. ET.
