Brooklyn's George, 18-2-2 (9 KO), opened eyes with a punishing ninth round TKO of former heavyweight champion Chris Byrd last May. As an amateur George had a record of 51-7, which was highlighted by two New York Golden Gloves titles and on National Golden Gloves championship.
Henry of Houston, TX is 23-2 (18 KO) and has held the NABF and NABA light-heavyweight titles. His only two losses have come in highly-competitive bouts with Yusaf Mack and Adrian Diaconu by decision. Henry has never been knocked down as a professional.
The fight will be the co-featured bout alongside Matt Godfrey vs. Shawn Hawk. The show will be promoted by Blaine Garner's Shalyte Entertainment in association with Dibella Entertainment and CES Boxing.

"Shaun George/Chris Henry Showdown is on in Philly!!"
The anticipated match-up between light heavyweight contenders Shaun George and Chris Henry is on for July 10, 2009! The fight will take place at The Arena in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
The ten-round bout, which will be televised on ESPN 2, was added on to an action packed card as the co-feature to Matt Godfrey v. Shawn Hawk.
George (18-2-2, 9 KO’s) is considered a top contender for the light heavyweight title. He captured the attention of the boxing world when he destroyed two-time heavyweight champion Chris Byrd last year. George’s most recent win came last February when he knocked out former world title challenger Jaffa Ballogou in the first round in stunning fashion.
“This is a great fight for Shaun on his path to a future title shot,” said his promoter Lou DiBella.

A winner of four straight, Shaun George (17-2-2, 8 KOs) put the boxing world on notice this past May with a brilliant, one-sided TKO victory over former two-time heavyweight champion Chris Byrd, in a nationally televised bout seen on ESPN2. Since his unexpected dramatic triumph over Byrd, few fighters have shown interest in challenging Brooklyn’s George – currently rated WBC #6, IBF #10 and WBA #11 at 175 lbs.
Fighting out of New York City, Ballogou (46-7, 40 KOs) is a southpaw of Tongan descent, who has held the IBF Continental African 200 lbs. belt as well as the WBC International super middleweight title during a stellar 20 year professional career.
Registering victories on the Berto-Collazo undercard was the aforementioned Hamer (3-0, 3 KOs), a Penn State graduate and two-time NY Golden Gloves/Empire State Games champion; and 2008 US Olympian Sadam Ali (1-0, 1 KO), himself, a two-time NY Golden Gloves titlist, who stopped Ricky Thompson in one round on Jan. 17. Both Hamer and Ali will be in four round action at BB Kings’ on February 25.

Shaun George: "I Feel like a New Fighter"; May 16 showdown with Chris Byrd
For Shaun George, his May 16 showdown with Chris Byrd is about more than a fight - it represents the struggle to fulfill the lofty potential held in his fists.
Born and raised in Brooklyn, NY, George has had to overcome the odds more than once to reach his goals. Yet even in New York City's deep and competitive amateur boxing program, George was able to make a name for himself, earning two NY Golden Gloves titles and a US National Amateur championship. His amateur accolades have yet to translate into the professional acclaim that once seemed inevitable, a fact that George fully recognizes.
"Up until this point, I feel my career has been a disappointment to myself. I have all of this telent and I haven't shown it. I have the ability to take my fight game to the next level. I'm bringing it all to the table on May 16. I want to show everyone, not just the judges, not just myself, but everyone what I am made of."
Just as aware as George is of his thus far unlocked talent, he is just as cognizant of the stern challenge set before him. Byrd, 40-4-1 (21 KO), is a significantly more experienced professional with two heavyweight championships in his past. In order to elevate his training process, George left his adopted home base of North Jersey for the first time to prepare in Arizona.
Leaving behind his wife Casey, who is expecting their first child in September, has not been easy on George.
"Being away from my wife bothers me, but it's a sacrifice I have to make. I want to be the best that I can be. In the end, winning this fight will make it all worthwhile. I don't want to look back and say that I didn't give it my best."
As he reflects on what lies ahead, George keeps in mind the reason why he puts himself through the grueling training process, why he needs to travel that extra mile for the sake of pugilistic accomplishment. Setting his priorities in perspective has made the process more bearable.
"I'm doing this for my family. I don't want my family to work so hard. I have a wife and a child on the way. I have problems and concerns just like anybody else. Beating Chris Byrd puts me one step closer to my dream, which is to be inducted into the Hall of Fame one day."
Aside from the tangible motivations that drive George, his competitive nature compels him as he approaches his highest stage as a pro. "If people say that I can't beat someone, then I want to be him. I want to be world champion. The only person in my way is Chris Byrd."
George is no stranger to fighting in his opponent's hometowns. One such instance, last February in Russia against Alexander Gurov, saw George win 10 out of 12 rounds only to drop a hometown decision.
"I'm a little nervous about that," George says of fighting in Las Vegas, where Byrd makes his residence. "I hope the judges give me credit where credit is due. Chris Byrd has his antics and is a bigger name. I don't want to win 2:30 of a round only to lose a round because Byrd lands one decent punch. I have faith that the commission will be fair and objective when scoring this fight, however."
George has one previous fight in Las Vegas, a 2003 knockout win over Terrence Smith.
To Shaun George, this isn't just another trip through the ropes; it is a new beginning. "In my first amateur fight, I left everything in the ring and gave it everything I had. This feels like my first fight. I feel like a new fighter; I'm refreshed. I can't think ahead past this fight. My only focus is on giving it everything I can for ten rounds.

George To Appear On The Ringside Boxing Show This Sunday!
If former heavyweight champion Chris Byrd intends to resurrect his career in his move down to light heavyweight, he'll first have to beat hungry contender Shaun George 16-2-2 (7 KO’s). The two will battle at Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas on May 16th. The bout will be aired on ESPN 2’s Friday Night Fights. LAS VEGAS- IBF Cruiserweight champion Steve “USS” Cunningham isn’t sitting around waiting for his next fight. The champ is currently in Las Vegas helping former IBF Heavyweight champion Chris Byrd prepare for his maiden voyage into the Light-Heavyweight ranks when Byrd takes on Shaun George May 16th in Las Vegas.
Cunningham, 21-1 with eleven knockouts is in camp with Byrd for the fourth time and familiarity seems to bring success for the two fighters.
“It’s a great situation for me to be able to come out here and work with one of the craftiest and best boxers of the past decade.” said the current Cruiserweight champ, “I think because we have similar lifestyle for which we have a strong belief in Jesus and we are devoted family men helped build a great friendship. Because of the friendship, I think we bring the best out of each other and want to push each other to make ourselves the best we can be.“
When asked about working with Cunningham, Byrd, 40-4-1 with twenty-one knockouts, said “Every time we work together, even for me who has been around the block, it’s a learning experience. Even more so now that I am a light-Heavyweight because of his speed and power. I can’t get away with anything with him. It’s very equal competition. He is the best cruiserweight in the world Bar None.”

Byrd and George will fight at The Cox Pavilion and the fight will be televised on ESPN-2.

For years, Shaun George has waited patiently for his chance to rise to the top of his division. His journey comes to a head on May 16, when the Brooklyn native faces former two-time heavyweight champion Chris Byrd on ESPN's Friday Night Fights in Las Vegas, NV. The fight will be contested at the light-heavyweight limit of 175 pounds.
"This opportunity means everything to me," says George, 16-2-2 (7 KO). "I'm ready for this step up on May 16. I've been waiting for this kind of fight my whole life. I believe I'm a better fighter and I'm ready to prove it. I know I'm the underdog, but I also know I will come out on top."
Shaun George is currently riding a three-fight winning streak following a dubious decision loss to Alexander Gurov in his opponent's home country. During his last fight, George shut out difficult journeyman Thomas Reid over ten rounds. Reid was a late-replacement for Eric Harding, who withdrew the week of the fight. George was a decorated amateur, winning two New York Golden Glove titles, as well as US National Amateur and Junior Olympic titles. He is trained by the venerable Tommy Brooks and promoted by Hall of Fame Promotions.
George's adversary, whose impressive mark reads 40-4-1 (21 KO), is no slouch either. Byrd has posted victories over heavyweight mainstays David Tua, Vitali Klitschko, Fres Oquendo and Evander Holyfield, among others. A silver medalist in the 1992 Olympics Games, "Rapid Fire" is a sure-fire future Hall of Famer.
"I know he's fast and that he fights intelligently," George concedes. "That doesn't concern me. It won't be about what Chris Byrd can do, but what I can do. This is my time to shine, Chris Byrd just happens to be the opponent set before me.
Shaun George's manager, Hall of Fame inductee Lou Duva, is confident with his fighter's prospects. "I've never seen him this excited about a fight before," says George's manager Lou Duva. "He wants this win, he's training to win and he's going to win.
"I know what this kid's abilities are. Shaun is a good, strong light heavyweight. He throws a lot of combinations and does what it takes to win. I like everything I see about him."
A recent press release issued by the Byrd camp made mention of Byrd's post-George intentions. George says his only concern is on the challenge he has signed to face. "He can look past me all he wants, talking about fighting Jones, Tarver and Calzaghe. My only focus is on the fight in front of me."

PROVIDENCE– NABF cruiserweight champion Matt “Too Smooth” Godfrey (16-1, 9 KOs) has been boxing professionally for four years, after a lengthy amateur career, but his ring education reached another level last month in Germany, albeit in defeat.
As the No. 1 rated contender in the World Boxing Council, Godfrey was matched against No. 2 ranked Rudy Kraj in a 12-round WBC Title Eliminator to determine the WBC’s mandatory challenger to title-holder David Haye. Kraj won a unanimous 12-round decision by scores of 117-111, 116-113, and 115-113.
Fighters react differently to adversity, especially a first loss; they generally come back stronger than ever because of the experience or fold-up and end-up nothing more than a club fighter. The 27-year-old Godfrey says he’s learned valuable lessons about himself and boxing that will help make him a world champion in the not too distant future.
“I went overseas to fight Kraj in his backyard,” Godfrey said. “I got through a difficult fight and learned a lot that I hadn’t experienced in my first 16 pro fights. I proved that I can dig down and go 12 hard rounds. I also learned that I have to become a lot meaner and more aggressive. I can’t just rely on my boxing ability, being ‘Too Smooth,’ and just looking good in the ring. I need to bite down, push forward and take the fight away from my opponent – like Vinny Paz did – instead of just boxing around in the ring.”
“The loss wasn’t devastating to his career,” Godfrey’s manager Bret Hallenback explained, “as long as he’s learned and that depends on how he comes back. It’s too early to say right now, but it’s no more than one loss, and I strongly believe he learned a lot. One thing he learned is that he’s not invincible, which will put pressure on him in future fights. It was a huge eye-opener for him. Matt has to be aggressive and use the skills and power he definitely has. It was an education. He took a loss, not a beating, and I have no doubt that he learned a valuable lesson. We need to get him into a big fight to prove his last fight wasn’t the norm, but more of a fluke, and an education for him.”
Godfrey was second heavyweight alternate on the 2004 U.S. Olympic Boxing Team, compiling a 194-23 amateur record, including six national championships -- four open tournaments highlighted by the 2004 Everlast U.S. Championships, plus two in the Junior Olympics – as well as a Bronze medal at the 2001 Pan-American Games, Silver in all four of that year’s national major tournaments (National Golden Gloves, PAL (Police Athletic League), U.S. Championships and U.S. Challenge).
His most notable wins as a pro were devastating stoppages of highly-touted prospects Shaun George and Felix Cora, Jr. on national television of. Matt was riding high until he fought Czech Republic native Kraj in Germany.
“I was terribly disappointed with my first loss, but now I realize that all champions (not named Floyd Mayweather or Joe Calzaghe) lose at some point. It isn’t the end of the world, as long as you learn from a loss, and I’ve learned a lot. I know what I’m capable of and I just have to put it all together. I still believe I’m the best cruiserweight in the world. I can’t wait to fight again. I went back into the gym right away and I’ve been working as hard as if I was preparing for a fight. I want to fight the top guys, on television, and get back to where I belong.”
Once rated No. 1, Godfrey dropped to No. 7 after his loss, which surprised Godfrey’s promoter, Jimmy Burchfield (Classic Entertainment & Sports, Inc.). “I don’t understand why he’s rated any lower than No. 3,” Burchfield noted. “He lost a close 12-round decision to the No. 2 guy and dropped all of the way to No. 7? I don’t get it. Matt won the championship rounds. He took over the fight but started off too slow and ended-up finishing just a little short. There’s no question that this experience is going to make him an even better fighter.”
